Makeover for CBD taxi rank ‘The move will also result in the removal of a large number of taxis ranking alongside Joubert Park, creating a safer and cleaner environment’ Johannesburg - The Jack Mincer Taxi Rank in the Johannesburg inner-city is soon to undergo a multimillion rand refurbishment to accommodate a large number of minibus taxis operating in streets within the already congested Johannesburg Park Station Precinct. The massive refurbishment, spearheaded by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), the City of Joburg’s infrastructure development and maintenance entity, is aimed at influencing the movement of minibus taxis in the area to reduce traffic congestion, create a welcoming environment for com-
muters and help formalise and provide appropriate working spaces for informal traders. “The move will also result in the removal of a large number of taxis ranking alongside Joubert Park, creating a safer and cleaner environment around the park,” says Transport MMC Christine Walters. As a consequence of this gamechanging move, the City’s Transport Department and JDA are in need of temporary space to be used as a ranking and holding facility around the area while the refurbishment of the Jack Mincer Taxi Rank is under way. One of the options
Part of the Jack Mincer Taxi rank in Sophie de Bruyn Street in the Joburg CBD to be refurbished.
being explored is to consider using Joubert Park as a temporary holding and ranking facility, with the ultimate aim of refurbishing and revitalising it after the taxi rank’s redevelopment. JDA Chief Executive Thanduxolo Mendrew has dismissed rumours and media reports suggesting that the City intends converting Joubert Park into a taxi rank. “No decision in respect of the temporary relocation of the taxis to Joubert Park or any other possible alternatives has been taken,” Mendrew says. “The JDA has a proud record of sustainable inner city re-
generation, with the construction of the new Metro Park and the revitalisation of the Ernest Oppenheimer Park being two good examples.” To this end, both the JDA and the City of Joburg’s Transport Department embarked on an extensive exploratory process to find temporary suitable accommodation for the taxis and informal traders in and around the Jack Mincer taxi facility. The agency has approached many private and public property owners for space with no success. “Joubert Park is being explored as a last resort,” says Mendrew. “Our aim is that once the facility has been
completed, the JDA will undertake a reconstruction of Joubert Park as an urban park that will retain its status both as a heritage space and the much-needed green lung in the City of Joburg.” The extension of the Jack Mincer minibus facility forms part of the bigger commuter links development that the JDA has been implementing over the past six years. “The development of user-friendly transport facilities assists with achieving a people-centric approach to development,” according to Lisa Seftel, the City's of Joburg’s Executive Director for Transport.

City of Joburg’s Executive Director: Economic Development, Ravi Naidoo
Boost for the city’s SMMEs Johannesburg - Entrepreneurs whose businesses struggle to take off because of the lack of exposure were given a golden opportunity to access bigger markets at Gold Reef City last Friday, when hotel group Tsogo Sun hosted a competitive supplier-buyer matchmaking fair. During the fair, held in partnership with the City of Joburg, hundreds of small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) showcased their products and services to a hospitality group that boasts 90 hotels throughout Africa with a combined total of 14 316 rooms. This is the second time in two weeks that SMMEs in Johannesburg were given the platform to expand their businesses. On August 28 retail giant Massmart made a presentation of its Competitive Supplier Development Programme, an initiative specifically designed to help guide small companies on how to enter the highly competitive retail market, at the Metro Centre in Braamfontein. Massmart, the local division of global retail giant Walmart, is a managed portfolio of four divisions, each focused on high-volume, low-margin, low-cost distribution of mainly branded consumer goods through 400 stores in 12 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. On Friday at Gold Reef City, several SMMEs demonstrated their readiness to supply Tsogo Sun with a range of products and services. The SMMEs were from sectors such as food and beverages, homeware, clothing and textiles, and maintenance. Reginald Pholo, the City’s Director of Trade and Investment Promotion, said the fair had provided Tsogo Sun’s decision-makers with the opportunity to screen and source suppliers. “Those selected will be informed within the next two weeks,” said Pholo. Qualifying SMMEs will receive business development support and benefits, including coaching and mentorship, software systems support and access to networking opportunities. Ravi Naidoo, the City’s Executive Director: Economic Development, said the fair put small businesses in contact with major buyers and further enhanced Johannesburg’s advantage as a business hub. “Johannesburg is a city of entrepreneurs and as the City we are constantly on the lookout for opportunities to further enhance our advantage. Each year we facilitate commercial relationships for more than 7 500 SMMEs through the City’s various programmes,” said Naidoo.

Govt declares country free of mines Maputo, Mozambique - The country has declared itself free of landmines, ending 20 years of work to rid the country of a legacy of war that killed or maimed thousands of people, many of them civilians. British charity, HALO Trust, said it has cleared more than 171 000 landmines from 1 100 minefields since 1993 and had destroyed the last known mine. Foreign Affairs Minister Oldemiro Baloi said: “I declare Mozambique as a country free of the threat of landmines.” A 1994 Human Rights Watch (HRW) report said mines claimed 10 000 to 15 000 victims. HRW estimated 8 000 amputees had received medical treatment and thousands more people killed or did not seek medical treatment. Mozambique was at war for decades, first against its Portuguese
Minister Oldemiro Baloi colonialists. After the Portuguese pullout in 1975, the Frelimo government battled Renamo rebels in a conflict that was in part a Cold War proxy. It ended with a peace agreement in 1992. Reuters

Thousands more flee worsening conditions Juba, South Sudan - Conditions in the wartorn country have worsened, with thousands fleeing fighting since a ceasefire deal three weeks ago, the UN has warned. In the northern battleground state of Unity, thousands of civilians are trekking through the vast Sudd swamplands to reach the village of Nyal, away from fighting. The UN office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said at least 18 000 people have arrived in Nyal in the past two weeks, taking the total there to more than 78 000 civilians. In Juba, the UN warned of a deteriorating security situation, where an aid worker was murdered on September 10. Some 1.64 million people have fled fighting inside the country, another 628 000 fled into neighbouring nations, while over 4.6 million people are now dependent on food aid. The army and rebels have repeatedly accused each other of breaking an August 29 ceasefire deal, the eighth such agreement since civil war broke out in December 2013. Despite the fighting, both sides say the political deal remains in place. Over 192 000 civilians are sheltering inside UN bases. In the largest UN base in the Unity state capital Bentiu, home to 112 000 civilians. Some 34 children died in one week, many from malaria, the UN added. South Sudan descended into bloodshed in December 2013 when President Salva Kiir accused his former deputy Riek Machar of planning a coup. The violence has left tens of thousands of people dead and the impoverished country deeply split along ethnic lines. Reuters

Malaria drug resistance alarm Sandie Ménard
T
he emerging resistance of malaria to standard therapies threatening South-East Asia, and new research carried out by the team led by Françoise Benoit-Vical, Inserm Research Director, are not reassuring factors. The in vitro examination of a strain of parasites solely exposed to artemisinin (the base compound for standard therapy) demonstrates the development of a widespread resistance to most other anti-malarial drugs. This new resistance cannot be detected by tests currently used and represents an additional threat to antimalarial treatments in the field. This research about malaria is published in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases. Malaria is caused by a parasite propagated through bites from infected mosquitoes from the Anopheles genus. This disease is most prevalent in tropical areas and still responsible for over 600 000 deaths each year. Policies to combat this disease have led to a 60% decrease in mortality over 15 years. However, artemisinin, the pharmaceutical base compound for antimalarial therapies, is encountering increasing clinical failure due to emerging resistance throughout South-East Asia. As of yet, this resistance has however not been observed on the African continent. Artemisinin is an active ingredient from a Chinese plant whose benefits have been known for over 2 000 years. It is used in combination with other antimalarial agents. The value of these combination therapies lies
in the assurance that even if the parasite develops a resistance to one molecule, it is less likely to develop a resistance to both molecules. The team led by Françoise Benoit-Vical, Inserm Research Director in the CNRS Coordination Chemistry Laboratory in Toulouse, in collaboration with Inserm in Toulouse and the Pasteur Institute in Paris, is studying the resistance mechanisms developed by Plasmodium falciparum, the parasite responsible for malaria, and researching new antimalarial drugs. Researchers have demonstrated that parasites who survive in vitro in the presence of only artemisinin for five years develop a widespread resistance to most other artemisinin-based or non-artemisinin-based antimalarial therapies, including partner molecules present in combination therapies used in endemic areas. Scientists have demonstrated that these parasites do not exhibit any known mutation in resistance genes. However, they circumvent the toxic effect of the drugs by a phenomenon known as quiescence. Parasites are capable of suspending their development during exposure to antimalarial agents. As soon as they are no longer subjected to antimalarial therapy, the parasites “wake-up” and proliferate once again. The new multi-drug resistance based on this quiescence phenomenon cannot be detected by tests currently carried out to analyse parasitic resistance. The ability of artemisinin-resistant parasites to develop a tolerance to partner drugs is a serious threat to combination therapy.
NECK PaiN DiaGNosis Reasons for a stiff neck Saadiya Adam Waking up with a stiff neck may disrupt your entire day. In addition to be frustrating, a stiff, painful neck can be a cause for alarm. If you are suffering with a stiff neck, you will have pain and difficulty with moving your neck, that way you end up using your entire body to look to the side. Other symptoms may include headaches, shoulder pain and pain radiating down your arm. These symptoms may last from a few days to a couple of weeks. The good news is that a stiff neck is usually not caused by a serious medical condition. Some of these causes may include: 1. Muscle strain - Any activity that requires your neck in an awkward position for a sustained period of time could cause your muscle to fatigue and subsequently spasm. Examples include; sleeping in a funny position, carrying a heavy bag on one shoulder, holding your phone against your shoulder while you talk or not having your computer screen at eye level 2. Cervical spine disorders - Your cervical spine is made up of seven vertebrae in your neck. Discs are located in between each ver-
tebrae and allow for shock absorption through the spine. Any degeneration (wear and tear of the joints) as a result of or may lead to a stiff neck. If a disc in your neck bulges out, it may cause irritation to the nerves exiting out of the spinal cord, this may lead to radiating pain in your arms. 3. Infection - Neck stiffness caused by an infection is rare and serious. If you experience any fever, nausea, vomiting with headaches it would be advisable to go see your doctor. Neck stiffness and pain caused by a muscle stain or spine disorder can be treated. Before beginning any neck stretching or exercise program, patients are advised to consult a health professional, such as an appropriately trained physiotherapist. The goal of a health consultation is twofold: To get an accurate diagnosis for the cause of the neck pain or stiffness, as different clinical diagnoses will dictate different types of treatment and exercises. To learn the correct form when doing the exercises, as doing the right exercises but with the wrong form is a common mistake and can lead to either lack of improvement or even increased pain and symptoms.

The new VW Tiguan SUV
VW Tiguan on its way to SA Motoring Correspondent Volkswagen’s second generation of their compact SUV, the Tiguan, has been based on the brand’s MQB platform (Modular Transversal Toolkit); aiming to be a general all-rounder that can be used in most environments. The Tiguan falls into the traditional VW design, but with a bit of a robust element attached. The Tiguan has been given black plastic trimmings across the bumper and around the wheel arches. Chrome trimmings can also be seen along the grille, sideskirts and rear bumper. It is lower, wider and longer than the previous model and more aerodynamic. The Tiguan will feature a selection of four TDI and four TSI engines, all of which are Euro-6 compliant. Petrol engine power outputs range from 92 kW to 162 kW while the diesel options will produce 85 kW to 176 kW. Base models will be equipped with front-wheel drive but more powerful variants will have VW’s 4MOTION drivetrain as an option. The VW Tiguan is expected to reach South African markets early next year.
