ndrew Mlangeni and Rivonia trial lawyer Advocate George Bizos were among those honoured. Andrew Mlangeni was too ill to attend an event where he was honoured with a Freedom of the City of Johannesburg award, so Tau and his delegation visited him in hospital where they also handed over the award. Mlangeni, who is also the chairman of the ANC integrity
committee, was admitted into Netcare Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg last Sunday. His son, Sello, delivered the acceptance speech. “My father thanked the mayor for the award and for taking the time to come and see him in hospital. He really appreciated that. My father is recovering very well. He is a strong man,” said Sello. In his acceptance speech, Bizos
said: “Thank you for the great honour you have bestowed upon me.” Asked about the state of the country, Bizos said: “We are going through a difficult period, but I am confident that solutions will be found sooner or later. “I have confidence in our constitution, our judiciary and that the majority of South Africans want peace and tranquility.”

Housing Master Plan for the Inner City Staff reporter news@inner-city-gazette.co.za
T
he City of Johannesburg has developed a Housing Master Plan for the inner city to address accommodation needs of the area’s residents. This was revealed by Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Development Planning and Urban Management Councillor Roslyn Greeff at an Integrated Development Plan (IDP) consultative meeting at the Braamfontein Recreation Centre late last week. MMC Greeff said the Master Plan sought to address “accommodation hassles” faced by residents of the inner city, including workers
and students. “We’re, for example, looking into converting derelict buildings into student accommodation. Students are exploited in places like Westdene and Brixton. She, however, called on residents to be patient as “things sometimes take time”. Ward 58 resident Hussain Adam said there were no capital investment projects planned for his area. “Our ward has come up with legacy projects in line with the Corridors of Freedom. We want to establish a city improvement district around Mayfair and start with high-density student accommodation. What we need is a meeting with the City’s Planning Department to present our plan,” said Adam. Tshepo Modikadika said some of the public amenities in Johannesburg should be renamed. “We can’t in this day and age have a park in Braamfontein named after Queen Elizabeth. There needs to be a name change.” Most of the concerns raised by residents revolved around the distribution of Jozi@ Work packages and the lack of RDP

housing in the inner city. “The City jumps when people in Soweto protest. Residents in Soweto have RDP houses. Why can’t we also have the same in the inner city? Why is the City treating us differently?” asked another resident. The MMC acknowledged the residents’ concerns around Jozi@Work. “There needs to be an improvement on how we manage the programme. I’ll forward your concerns to the Executive Mayor, who’s championing the programme.” said Greeff.

A brief statement from the Democratic Alliance for the electorate: The offer here is simple: where we already govern we want to keep delivering services and governing in a way that really changes and impacts the lives of residents; and where we are given a chance by voters to lead new governments after the election, we want to start creating the change we speak about in the manifesto.

Points payment system for Rea Vaya Staff reporter news@inner-city-gazette.co.za
Why do we celebrate Freedom Day? Staff Writer news@inner-city-gazette.co.za

ommuting on Rea Vaya bus service has become a lot better, easier, smarter, more economical and convenient. The City of Johannesburg’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system will from 1 May 2016 move to a pointsbased payment platform to improve customer experience. In another major City of Johannesburg innovation, commuters will now be able to load points on to their Rea Vaya smartcards at R1 a point instead of paying fares in cash. Commuters will also qualify for bonus points. The more points are loaded on to their Rea Vaya smartcards in a single transaction, the more bonus points they will earn, which they can use for additional trips. Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport Councillor Christine Walters says the City is delighted to launch the points system as it offers “real benefits for Joburg’s commuters”. “Our aim is to ensure that public transport in the city is fast, safe, reliable and affordable. The new Rea Vaya points system and vending machines will make travelling on Rea Vaya easy and hassle-free, while offering our customers real savings,” says Cllr Walters. “From 1 May 2016 to 30 June 2016, passengers can earn 10% in

bonus points when they spend between R51 and R100, 15% from R101 to R200, 20% from R201 to R300, and 25% from R301 to R700.” There will also be significant savings as commuters will not pay loading fees. There will be no longer any need to indicate entry and exit points to get discounted fares. “Commuters can just hop on a bus, swipe their smartcard on entry and exit. The Rea Vaya system will deduct the correct fare. On entry, a fare of R5.20 (5.2 points) is deducted (the minimum fare), with the balance of the fare deducted on exit, which is dependent on distance travelled,” said MMC Walters. Rea Vaya will also roll out self-service vending machines at certain stations to increase the convenience of loading points. Commuters will also be able to load points at cashier booths, ABSA ATMs and main Rea Vaya stations using cash, debit or credit cards, except American Express and Diners Club cards. From 1 July 2016, when new Rea Vaya fares are introduced, commuters could earn up to 12.5% bonus points in a single transaction. Commuters are advised to store their smartcard number and report a lost card to the Rea Vaya Customer Care Centre. For more information, commuters can download the Rea Vaya Moja App.

reedom Day commemorates the first democratic elections held in South Africa on 27 April 1994. It is an occasion for the country to remember and celebrate struggle icons and honour those who continue to be committed to transformation and to building a better life for all of us. The 2nd of February 1990 saw the unbanning of the South African Communist Party (SACP), Pan African Congress (PAC) and other organisations. A non racial constitution was eventually agreed upon and adopted in 1993 On 27 April 1994, the nation finally cast its vote in the first democratic election in the country. The ANC was then voted into power, and Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as the President of South Africa on May 10. Freedom Day therefore serves as a reminder to us that the guarantee of our freedom requires us to remain

he FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN promises to be one of the most unique and innovative running events on the South African calendar,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports. “Not only will thousands of runners share the streets with world class athletes, but the excitement, vibrancy and energy that the event will bring to the centre of Johannesburg will be exceptional. We believe the event will support the regeneration of the urban centre of Johannesburg. In addition to a fast, flat route, exciting on-route entertainment and vibrant event atmosphere, entrants can look forward to exploring their city at the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN.” Themba Mabizela, FNB Business -Provincial Head, Gauteng South and Central added “We are incredibly excited to be part of this race which brings together ordinary citizens and athletes from all walks of life. the preferred ways of maintaining a healthy lifestyle so we believe that the event presents an opportunity to stay active. We would like to encourage every participant to enjoy the race”. 947 urges runners and wannabe runners to sign up. “This is going to be one of those events that creates real FOMO in anyone who misses out. We’ll get to experience the city on foot, together with thousands of others and you do not want to miss out on the spirit of the inaugural FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN,” says 947 station manager, Ravi Naidoo.
FNB Business has decided to sponsor the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN because we believe in supporting a race that encourages people to run and know their city; a race that will re-invent how people perceive and experience the city centre. The FNB Bank City buildings are wellknown and iconic buildings in the Johannesburg CBD and the precinct was recently revamped in 2015 with three lifestyle concepts of Work, Eat & Play in mind. For many years it has been viewed as traditional banking headquarters; however the recent revamp has positively changed the
experience of the precinct. The additions of new restaurants, coffee shops, health & beauty stores and other stores of interest have been well received. Sponsoring the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN is aligned to our belief in the importance of rejuvenating and reviving the city centre so it remains relevant. Each entrant will receive a magnificent PUMA ®Performance Event Tee. Facebook page: The Johannesburg Heritage Foundation / Johannesburg SPCA / Joburg-10K. rlando Pirates coach Eric Tinkler has warned top scorer Tendai Ndoro (pictured) not to rest on his laurels after his goal scoring spree over the last months has propelled the club up the Absa Premiership standings and into the Nedbank Cup semifinals. Ndoro has scored five Nedbank Cup goals, including a dramatic breakaway effort to win Saturday’s quarterfinal tie at high-flying Mamelodi Sundowns, plus another five in the Absa Premiership. “I’m happy he is scoring but I need to keep all the players on their toes. You can’t rest on your laurels,” said Tinkler
in the build-up to Wednesday’s Absa Premiership match at home to Polokwane city. “You are only as good as your last game, that’s the harsh reality. I’m happy for him that he is doing well, it’s good for us but needs to continue working hard if he wants to still remain a success because, you know in the modern game, people start quickly picking up your strengths and then they look to counter that. “So now you have to come up with extra energies, you have to come up with extra ideas in terms of wanting to improve your own game. So hence I’m saying Tendai must continue working,”said Tinkler.
