City alleviates poverty “This means between now and June we will need about R30 million to feed the poor, mainly as a result of the escalating food prices. As a consequence we will now be providing food parcels twice a month instead of weekly” Katlego Moeng - news@gazettelive.co.za

A

s the prices of fresh vegetables and fruits on Johannesburg’s streets rocket sky-high, the city’s department of social development says it has had to dig deep to ensure that the increasing number of people who need hunger relief are fed. The number of poor people who require assistance with food from the city will jump to 42 300 in February, a significant increase from the current 34 200 people. According to the city’s figures, which are mainly drawn from the Joburg Market, since beginning of the year, the price of potatoes has gone up by 95%, tomatoes (97%), onions (41%) and bananas (10%). Member of the Mayoral Committee for Health and Social Develop-

ment Councillor Nonceba Molwele says the Joburg Market accounts for 47% share of all fresh produce, which makes it the biggest in the country. Madima said the national drought had affected both the volumes and quality of the fresh produce delivered to the market and has hit the poor very hard. In the wake of the brewing crisis, the City will have to spend R30million between now and June this year to fund the City’s Food Resilience Programme after the number of beneficiaries of food parcels leapt almost twofold in two years, from last year’s 19 500. “This means between now and June we will need about R30 million to feed the poor, mainly as a result of the escalating food prices.

the trade of fresh produce. We’re like the Joburg Stock Exchange – we provide sales processes and systems for approximately 5 000 active commercial and small-scale farmers,” he said. Lekgau said every month 100 000 tons of fresh produce are delivered to the market from all over the country. The market earns 5% from sales while market agents are paid a commission of not more than 7.5%. The rest is paid to farmers. “All farmers have been severely affected by this. But small-scale farmers are worse off. Overall production went down. The heat wave did a lot of damage,” Lekgau said.

As a consequence we will now be providing food parcels twice a month instead of weekly,” Molwele said. Tshifhiwa Madima, Executive Manager of Agribusiness at the Joburg Market and his colleagues, Executive Manager: Strategy and Transformation Moronngoe Tladinyane and Agribusiness Specialist Researcher Sydwell Lekgau, said the drought had become very

severe. “This will increase food insecurity. (The Department of Social Development) might have to reduce the size of hampers so that what is available is spread evenly among the needy,” said Madima. “Year-on-year prices have gone up, while volumes have dropped,” said Madima “Our mandate is to provide a platform and systems to facilitate

Naked woman found dead Katlego Moeng - news@gazettelive.co.za

T

he naked body of a young woman believed to have been thrown from a dilapidated inner city building was found among rotting trash is an alley yesterday (Wednesday) morning. Police estimated the age of the woman to be between 25 and 30. It was not immediately clear if she was sexually assaulted. She was found face down in the passage filled with rotting debris and human waste between the buildings where she fell from, which is on the corner of Jeppe Street and Nugget Street. “This building is a problem. We have conducted many raids here as people complain about the crime around the building. People get robbed and thugs run in here, even if they do not stay here. They know their victims would not dare venture inside looking for them,” said Johannesburg Central Police Station spokesperson Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele. “We have arrested many people from this building. Unfortunately we cannot close the building so people keep coming back,” Mbele said. Residents and neighbours told Inner-CityGazette that this was the third mysterious death in recent months and the second one this year. A resident alleged that there were body parts missing although this was unconfirmed by police. All alleged victims have been women. Mbele could not immediately confirm these claims. He said police were not yet sure if the woman was a resident of the building or whether she jumped or was thrown. He said an inquest docket would be opened.“Her leg was broken and she had a head injury. She may have sustained the injuries as she struck a pole that protrudes from the building,” added Mbele.

Police and pathologists attend to the body

The said building is derelict, with some floors looking charred, broken windows and covered in rotting litter. It has no running water or electricity. Meanwhile, Mbele said police were still waiting for forensic tests to be conducted on the bones that were found in the basement of another foul building that is being renovated a block down the road on the corner of Jeppe Street and Kerk Street. The bones were discovered on Wednesday. Police pathologists were on the scene on Thursday collecting more bones from the area.

Church will not spare the rod Katlego Moeng - news@gazettelive.co.za The SA Human Rights Commission has urged parents “to spare the rod” when disciplining their children. This comes after the commission ruled against a parenting manual by the Joshua Generation Church that promotes corporal punishment. Commission spokesperson Isaac Mangena says the manual was in violation of the constitution. A complaint was laid in 2013, but the commission only concluded this month. The church released a statement this week. He said an amendment to the Children’s Act that extends the prohibition of corporal punishment from school to the home will soon start going through the legislative processes to be made into law. The Joshua Generation Church parenting manual titled: Rais-

ing Children – Transformation through Truth, states that “a spanking must cause some pain otherwise it is useless... It is most effective to strike a light rod against bare skin..” Spokesperson Advocate Nadene Badenhorst said the commission’s rulings would “damage children”. “The rod is not just used for disciplining your children, but is also used as a training tool,” complained the church. Sonke Gender Justice joined three complainants in laying a complaint with the commission against the church. The commission said regardless of religious beliefs and doctrine, the justification of moderate chastisement of children was unacceptable. It said corporal punishment in all forms was against constitutional values and accepted interna-

tional human rights standards. “The state is crossing the sacred line of family and also violating the religious freedom of people of different faiths who believe, according to their interpretation of the bible, that it is their parental duty to provide appropriate guidance.” said Badenhorst.

Co-worker arrested for rape Johannesburg Central Police arrested a 39-year-old suspect for rape at London House corner Main and Loveday Street on the 26th of January 2016. It is alleged that a suspect raped a 33-year old female inside a lift at London House on the 25th of January 2016. The innocent woman was inside the lift when he decided to quench his sexual appetite by inserting his depraved finger in her private part. In a quest to satisfy his sinful intentions without her consent he grabbed and pulled her into his office, she screamed for help and he let her go. Investigations are continuing and the suspect will appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.

Typhoid cases in Johannesburg ‘not an outbreak’ Johannesburg - The Gauteng health department confirmed over the weekend that four cases of typhoid fever have been identified in Johannesburg, and that one person has died. Typhoid fever is an acute severe illness caused by the bacterium Salmonella typhi. It is acquired by swallowing the organism in contaminated food or water. Typical symptoms include fever, headache, abdominal pain, rash, diarrhoea and an enlarged spleen. It can be cured with antibiotics. The department said in a statement on Sunday that the cases were identified in Hillbrow, Yeoville, Edenvale, and Palm Springs. Two of the patients were admitted to the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital and the other two patients to the Edenvale District Hospital. A 27-year-old female Malawian patient died at the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital on January 17. She had travelled to Malawi for the festive season and returned to Johannesburg through Mozambique on January 12, the department said. Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu advised people to always wash their hands.

Department of international relations spokesman Nelson Kgwete said that they did not know anything about Zwane’s arrest. According to reports, he returned drunk to the Old Woolstore Hotel and was unable to find his room, following which he entered a female artist’s hotel room and indecently assaulted her. Lord’s Resistance Army commander goes on trial President Robert Mugabe

Mugabe returns Robert Mugabe has returned home from a month long holiday, after dismissing reports that he had collapsed and suffered a heart attack.

Reports circulated that the Zimbabwean President had suffered a heart attack last week, during a monthlong holiday in the Far East. His office denies that any such health issues have occurred. Mugabe was depicted on state television arriving at Harare Airport with his wife and security aides recently. He has previously dismissed reports that he is suffering from declining health, assuring reporters that he is “fit as a fiddle.” Mugabe, who turns 92 on 21 February, is the only president that the country has ever known. In 2014, he was re-elected as leader of ZANUPF for another five years. This means he will automatically be the party’s presidential candidate in the 2018 general elections. The party is deeply divided over who will eventually succeed him.

“Witnesses tell of how he instructed his escorts to administer dreadful beatings and ... even, on at least one occasion to kill, cook and eat civilians who had been abducted in attacks,” The 40-year-old faces 70 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court. It heard how he slaughtered civilians while he commanded the Sinai Brigade of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). The bloodshed even included cases of cannibalism, prosecutors said. It is claimed Ongwen was abducted by the LRA when he was just 10, eventually rising through the ranks of the movement under the rule of the warlord Joseph Kony. At the hearing to determine whether Ongwen should face a war crimes trial, the prosecutor Ben Gumpert said Ongwen had led attacks on four camps where refugees had sought shelter from the LRA in 2003 and 2004.“Witnesses tell of how he instructed his escorts to administer dreadful beatings and ... even, on at least one occasion to kill, cook and eat civilians who had been abducted in attacks,” Gumpert said. He said the LRA deliberately targeted civilians in its conflict with Ugandan government forces, murdering indiscriminately, abducting children

to turn them into killers “steeped in blood”, forcing girls and women into “marriages” with fighters. Gumpert said Ongwen “bears significant criminal responsibility” for the attacks, during which civilians were killed and tortured, and women and children were abducted. “Nursing mothers whose babies slowed up the progress or who simply cried too loudly saw them killed or thrown into the bush and left behind,” Gumpert said. He added that Ongwen played a crucial role in transforming abducted children into soldiers, whom Kony saw as “most easily moulded into the ruthless killers he needed”. They were forced to perform “acts of torture and murder designed to convince (them) they were so steeped in blood that there could be no acceptance for them back in civilian society,” Gumpert said.

AFricA Boko Haram kill dozens in Cameroon

The burial mask of Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamun is one of Egypt’s biggest tourist attractions

Tutankhamun mask: Eight face trial Eight face trial for knocking beard off iconic artefact and then trying to glue it back on Eight Egyptian museum employees face trial for damaging the iconic Tutankhamun mask in a botched attempt to glue his beard back on, local media has reported. The accused are reported to face charges of negligence and violating professional standards after a yearlong investigation into the damage. Investigators had been probing how the famous blue and gold braided beard came to be detached and then hastily glued back on. According to one report in the Daily News Egypt, the mask was initially damaged when it was moved to repair an electrical fault to the display lights on its base. The accused are then said to have tried and failed several times to reattach the beard with glue to cover up the damage.

Suicide bombers have killed about 25 people in Cameroon in one of the deadliest recent attacks by Islamist militant groups connected to Boko Haram. Four suicide bombers struck the town of Bodo in the north of the country, with two hitting the town’s central market and the others attacking its main entrance and exit points, according to a local official. More people were also wounded at the scene, he said. “There was a quadruple suicide bombing in the village of Bodo this morning. There are around 25 deaths and several wounded,” he added. An 8,700-strong regional force of Cameroonian troops has been created to defeat Boko Haram, which has waged a six-year campaign to carve out a separate state in northeastern Nigeria.

Bolt drops 2020 hint

Usain Bolt

80 President and Polly Johannesburg 011 333 1107 084 220 6622 / 078 277 5215

Neat and clean rooms from R250.00 two people. We have twin, double, luxury and 3 or 4 sleepers. We are very close to the Carlton Centre and major shops and factories. Food outlets are also nearby.

Usain Bolt says he has considered the possibility of extending his remarkable sprinting career to the 2020 Olympics – but is targeting a history-making new world 200m record at this year’s Rio de Janeiro games first. The Jamaican sprint star has repeatedly said he plans to hang up his spikes after the 2017 World Championships in London, bringing the curtain down on a record-breaking career that has included six Olympic gold medals. However the 29-year-old told Television Jamaica in an interview aired on Sunday that his coach Glen Mills had suggested he was capable of running in a fourth Olympics if he chose to. “The coach says I can go on to even the next Olympics in 2020,” Bolt said. “But I’m not gonna say what I’m gonna do. My coach says I should stop talking about it all the time, let’s just go through these two years and see what happens.” “I don’t want to continue if I know I’m not going to push myself hard enough.” Bolt said he had taken on board advice from US sprint great and former Olympic 200m and 400m champion Michael Johnson as he mulled his future. “I asked Michael Johnson – I said ‘Why did you retire, when you were dominating?’. He said ‘Listen, I’ve done everything in the sport, I was on top, why should I continue?’,” Bolt revealed, adding he did not want to emulate NBA legend Michael Jordan, who returned unsuccessfully after retiring. “He left the sport when he was great and he came back and made a small mockery of his career a little bit,” Bolt said. “I don’t want to put myself in the same position, with other people stepping up while I’m going backwards.” In the short term Bolt said he is determined to light up this year’s Olympics in Rio, where he will be attempting to defend his 100m and 200m titles for a third straight occasion. Bolt revealed he is targeting a new world record in the 200m, hoping to become the first man to duck beneath 19 seconds. “If everything goes as planned it’s going to be an awesome Olympics,” Bolt said. “That’s the main aim. Everyone wants me to win again, but what they really want to see is records. One of the big records I want is the 200. What I want is sub-19 – the first man to ever have done it, it would be a game-changer.”

Stuart Baxter

Baxter takes over SuperSport United has confirmed the parting of ways with coach Gordon Igesund with immediate effect with former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter taking over. The parties agreed to an early termination following Matsatsantsa advising Igesund that his contract, which expires at the end of the season, would not be renewed. Matsatsantsa also confirmed that former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter would be brought in to replace Igesund. Baxter will be taking up his coaching duties pending the finalisation of his work permit and current assistant coach Kaitano Tembo and Academy Technical Director Kwanele Kopo will take interim charge of the team until Baxter is cleared for duty. Both Tembo and Kopo will remain as assistant coaches until the end of the season. Igesund joined SuperSport United in September 2014 and soon went on to win the Telkom Cup and secure a top 6 finish for the Club. However, the team’s results this season have been below expectations with the team languishing in the bottom half of the table at the half way mark, prompting the parties to go their separate ways.
