Interview with Nonhlanhla Dube – CRM (Social Media) Manager. Career Compass Guides the way to Success 1. Why is it so difficult for school leavers to decide on a career to follow? Recent research has indicated that prospective tertiary education students are not confident about their career choices. Schools do not have the resources they need to assist learners with career investigation, and in addition they have to focus their time and efforts on the academic material for exams –they don’t have the luxury of spending time advising on careers. It is in this environment that learners have to make a choice and finalise applications! I can also say from experience – when you are in first year you are overwhelmed, studies are very difficult at a tertiary level, and we land up questioning whether the effort required matches our passion for the industry we have selected!. 2. So Boston realized that there was a gap in career education at school level, and addressed it with a computerized programme? Well, recent research indicates that 73% of matric students believe they are still in need of comprehensive career guidance and 84% believe there are many career opportunities they do not even know of. Sadly, only 21% believe they have the resources within their area to guide them towards their ideal career. Learners need clarity! Boston invested in the development of a computerized assessment that can be delivered on a national basis, and made sure it is offered free as part of our corporate social responsibility to education. A decision on careers is a life-changing decision and we have to keep in mind it involves a commitment to fees too, so we believe that we need to try and assist in the matching the most appropriate skills and interests to studies. It is offered at no obligation or cost to any learner. 3. Tell us about the career compass assessment. This is a hi-tech and brief career in-

Nonhlanhla Dube sight evaluation that is aimed to help students reach career maturity. It will help you explore things such as: Do you want to work regular office hours or extended hours Work with numbers? Work with people? Work alone? Work as a member of a team? Are you creative? Do you wish to enter the working world as a technician, web designer, programmer or administrator? The answers to these pertinent questions guide the student towards the ideal study programme. 4. And when the aptitude assessment is complete - what do you get? Results are available immediately, produced in a graph that ranks the individual’s results from the most suited career options to the least, based upon the individual’s interests. Appropriate career choice is impor-

tant - it has been proven that students are more likely to succeed if they are studying subjects that they enjoy. ‘Statistics show that there is a 15% 25% throughput rate at South African universities and colleges (Source: High university drop-out rates: a threat to South Africa’s future – HSRC, 2008). This means that only about 1 quarter of all students who start a programme complete it. “This shows career choice requires research and self-evaluation with a consultant. And if you start a degree and you are not happy –investigate your options!” 4. What other advice do you have for learners about to make a career decision? Education is not static – which is why Boston maintains a liaison with various industries, updates course material, and introduces new courses such as Cloud computing to keep graduates in demand from the workplace. Our research, for example, showed that there was a gap for a qualification that covers skills such as skills in the social media and digital marketing fields and so the Boston BCom Management Marketing degree was introduced. Other degrees and diplomas available include the BCom Law, Bachelor of Accounting, Bachelor of Social Science, the Postgraduate Diploma in Management and diplomas in Networking and Systems Development, all designed to meet new skills demands in industry. Keep in mind if you choose something like IT it will involve lifelong learning as it is a constantly evolving field. Another important aspect is to check that the right government and industry body accredits both the course you’re interested in as well as the college that is offering the course. Students win Facebook gender equality challenge ‘We look forward to working with the students and UN Women to bring the Gold winning campaign for #HeForShe to life on Facebook and Instagram. Gender equality remains an important topic globally’ Own Correspondent The Facebook Challenge gives students the opportunity to showcase their creativity by working on a digital campaign concept for a worthy cause or NPO. This year, Facebook partnered with UN Women to raise awareness around the HeForShe gender equity campaign. Students were challenged to create a mobile-first stories ad campaign for HeForShe to help further the cause of gender equality. Securing gold place, the ‘Know her name’ campaign from Vega School students is a mobile campaign that showcases the accomplishments of female sports stars to set a new precedent for equality in treatment of men’s and women’s sport. The bronze winning Mandela University students, created a campaign which sought to ‘change the conversation’ and highlight how gender inequality exists not only in the violent and extreme cases, but in the everyday language that we use and the ideologies we feed children. Aimed at men, it encouraged

Johannesburg - Six men were arrested after they allegedly robbed a U-Save Shoprite in the CBD on Wednesday, according to police. Police spokesperson Captain Xoli Mbele said a suspect pushed a security guard inside the shop at gunpoint. “He was joined by others who ordered everyone to lie down. City renovates Pikitup depot Diepkloof - Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba recently launched the construction and renovation of the Pikitup central camp depot in Diepkloof, Soweto. The renovation came after the depot was set alight by protesters demanding employment from the company last year, during the introduction of the city’s insourcing programme. The City said the upgrade and renovation project costs over R80 million and its set to create employment opportunities for those who reside in area. “Construction and upgrade of the depot will give back dignity to the employees of Pikitup after working under difficult conditions. Since we took office, to renovate this building, built in early 1970s, has been one of the City’s priorities,” Mashaba said. Pikitup’s spokesperson Muzi Mkwanazi said the

upgrades are significant in restoring the dignity of the company’s employees. “They would work in offices that are conducive for them to undertake their work with vigour, pride and renewed energy, thus improving productivity,” he said. Mkhwanazi explained that the depot had defective ablution facilities, broken washing bays, no meeting hall and almost dilapidated offices, and had not been renovated for almost 40 years. He added that the upgrades will entail removal of the existing asbestos office building, construction of new offices, new male and female ablution facilities, new waste and sewer reticulation system, a 450-seater hall and a medical centre. “To prevent damage to the company’s facilities in future, the upgrades will include a guard house to ensure that the depot is secured,” Mkhwanazi said.

Project promotes African co-productions Johannesburg - The newly revamped Discop Johannesburg programme will aim to go beyond content buying and selling. Discop market’s vision is to promote the commerce and co-production of multi-screen entertainment content across Africa. The upcoming edition, which will be held from 20 - 22 November at the Sandton Convention Centre, will put strong emphasis on African television projects in development,

partnerships with South Africa, the animation sector and the export of content produced on the continent. According to Discop Johannesburg, co-production in international television is expanding and Africa can play an increasingly influential role in getting projects off the ground. This year’s edition of Discop Johannesburg will aim to focus on African content producers with works in progress to reach out to key players in Africa and beyond. Discop president Patrick Zuchowicki said: “Not since the invention of television has Africa exercised such an influence on the creation of original

multiscreen content. Discop Johannesburg 2019 will see three times more projects with cross-border potential brought to the market by African producers than in 2018.” He added that the event will focus on works in progress and fostering co-productions, which will be brought to life via the side-bar Discopro programme. “Discop will see more than 50 speakers, including many intrepid disruptors on stage for panel discussions. Discussions will orient the eight key pillars of the industry’s current transformation: what buyers actually want; exporting African content; the content monetization challenge; stop fake news; empowering women in media; the united world of animation and the super fast-growing video gaming competition sector.” Sponsored by the Africa Channel, a series of master classes and a panel discussion led by experts from around the world will aim to address how independent produc-

ers can export their content and best adapt to the fast-paced world of multicultural television, Zuchowicki said. Africa Channel general manager Narendra Reddy says broadcasters, premium cable channels and streaming platforms from around the world are starting to recognise the value of African content. “However, producers on the continent need to be proactive and participate in creating opportunities for distribution. While production should continuously evolve to global standards in terms of technical quality, producers should endeavor to develop stories that are authentic, local and culturally specific,” Reddy adds. A tutorial track will put the country’s rebates system under the spotlight and will strive to examine the benefits available through co-production treaties that exist between South Africa and the UK, France, Germany, Canada and Australia. Bank credit for informal traders

Johannesburg - Standard Bank has taken a stake in local fintech firm Nomanini to offer credit to small shop owners and informal retailers that have limited access to banking services. The bank invested $4 million in Nomanini, which connects informal merchants with distributors via an e-wallet, and aims to roll the service out across 14 African countries by early 2021. According to a 2017 report by audit firm Deloitte, nine out of 10 retail transactions in Africa are conducted in cash or via informal channels like kiosks and open-air markets. Using Nomanini technology, Standard Bank will collect and analyse data on the retailers. The bank’s head of digital in Africa regions Adrian Vermooten said data on just one primary product line, such as pre-paid airtime, was enough to proxy the risk associated to that shop, build up a financial profile and understand its ordering patterns. “This will allow the bank to preempt the trader’s re-stocking needs and send them alerts offering to arrange and underwrite its next order, for instance. This could be done via Nomanini or Standard Bank devices supplied to the traders or by leveraging other existing networks or de-

vices from third parties; whatever fits best in each market.” Vermooten pointed to tens of thousands of informal traders who currently act as mobile money agents in African countries. “Those are all small businesses that we find really attractive,” he said. At a later stage, the bank will look to help those retailers offer financial services, like cash deposits and withdrawals, to their customers. Vahid Monadjem, founder and CEO of Nomanini, said even just 100 000 retailers could reach between 50 million and 150 million people. Standard Bank will also face competition from traditional rivals such as FirstRand, which has also teamed up with a fintech firm to target informal businesses. New players are entering the fray too. Digital-only lender TymeBank, which launched this year, is planning to offer business accounts, while a bank set up by money transfer service Hello Paisa and lender Sasfin is specifically targeting informal retailers. Hello Paisa MD Ahmed Cassim said the bank, launched in June, would offer retailers point-of-sale devices in order to

Memorial concert for Johnny Clegg Kelebogile Bogatsu

The African Cultural Music and Dance Association (ACUMDA) in partnership with Umzansi Zulu Dancers will present a memorial concert for Johnny Clegg on Sunday, September 1, at Jules Park, Johannesburg. Headlining the event are Maskandi and traditional music groups such as Ushameni, Abafana Base-Mzansi, Amankonyane, Izigi Zendoda, Mboneni Zimba and Buselaphi Induna yeSilo, Vusumuzi Thusi, also the chairperson of ACUMDA, said this memorial concert for Clegg is because during apartheid he immersed him-

self among black people, which led to his arrest by the white police. “We seek to display Clegg as a people’s person who had respect and love for Maskandi music and black people,” he said. Umzansi Zulu Dancers will get the crowd on their feet with their essential and uplifting ‘isicathamiya’ dance styles, correlated by former Johnny Clegg dancer, Siyazi Zulu. “In the Zulu culture, if you’re prolific in something significant, we honour you. Clegg played a role in my life as he taught me his dances. It’s because of his influence that I’m well-known world-over,” Zulu said. Clegg made an indelible mark

in the music industry and the hearts of the people. He formed the band Juluka in 1969 with black guitarist Sipho Mchunu, at a time when mixing among races was illegal. The 1987 hit Asimbonanga, a tribute to Nelson Mandela, who at the time had been imprisoned on Robben Island for over two decades, was one of the high points of a glittering career. Clegg played a huge role in African music, as he mastered the Zulu language and the Maskandi guitar, as well as ‘isicathamiya’ dance styles. The concert is free and open to all, starting at 10am. Chinese instructors train cops in hand-to-hand combat

Johannesburg - A group of JMPD officers have been taken through an intensive training programme hosted by members of the Fujian Police College from China. JMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the training camp, which was held in Johannesburg, focused on teaching

officers techniques in hand-to-hand combat. He added that the officers could use the skills from the training for unarmed and defence measures when arresting suspects, as well as tactical principles on how to execute surprise moves on suspects when entering a house or a building

to face armed suspects. “They were also taught how to restrain aggressive armed suspects when approaching a stolen or hijacked vehicle,” Minnaar said. The Fujian College says it has over 5 000 undergraduate students and more than 7 000 in-service police officers trained every year.

The training was facilitated by the Chinese embassy at no cost to Johannesburg, the city’s public safety department said. The 30 trainees, who completed a two-week course, were awarded certificates in ‘Police Use of Force’ which were awarded by the China Ministry of Public Security, it said.

Roodepoort - A woman who was allegedly involved in a business robbery with 15 others at Jet Park, Boksburg, has been arrested. Police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo said the 26-year-old woman was arrested in Roodepoort on Monday. Masondo said the group of 16 robbers, one of them a woman, travelling in two trucks allegedly entered the premises of the company a few weeks ago and held up security guards at gunpoint. “They ordered the employees to load boxes of chocolates into the trucks; and also allegedly stole employees’ cellphones and fled the scene.” No injuries were reported. Masondo added that police opened a case of business robbery and have launched a manhunt for the suspects. “Part of the police investigation is to establish if the gang is involved in other crimes, especially where the same modus operandi was used.” Police are still searching for the 15 others. Police appealed to anyone who might have information that can assist in arresting the suspects to call the nearest police station or crime stop on 08600 10111.

Booze association launches in Joburg Bontle Moeng

L

iquor producers recently launched the Beer Association of South Africa (BASA) at the Mad Giant Brewery in Johannesburg. The BASA brings together Craft Brewers Association, Heineken SA and South African Breweries, to form a unified voice on issues affecting the industry and enhance beer culture in South Africa. South Africa is one of the largest beer producing countries in the world and is the most popular beverage in the country in terms of volume and value. The industry is a major supplier of local jobs, an economic driver and a large revenue raiser for government. Craft Brewers’ Apiwe NxusaniMawela said after many years of trying to set up the association, the launch finally took place. “Together the BASA members will do more to elevate beer and grow a positive beer culture in the country,” Nxusani-Mawela said. Heineken South Africa manag-

ing director Gerrit van Loo said: “Heineken is a member of various brewers associations in different markets in the world. We know the important role the beer association can play in promoting the role of beer in society, differentiating beer as a category, advocating for certain regulations for the category and in demonstrating the economic impact of the beer sector.” South African Breweries (SAB) Ricardo Moreira, chief executive said SAB regards the association as an opportunity to engage and educate consumers and civil society on their contribution to growing the country’s economy. “Beer plays a significant role in growing local communities through the use of predominantly locally sourced raw materials and the provision of sustainable jobs, supporting thousands of farmers, suppliers and retailers, and creating opportunities for inclusion for many SA youth and women. BASA will enable the industry to collectively contribute to shaping the category’s positive im-

pact in South Africa and encourage stronger collaboration with government in creating a mutually beneficial business environment.” Beer Association of South Africa CEO Sanele Gaqa said the association looks forward to working with government and its partners within the private sector and civil society to ensure sustainable growth of the sector, and to continue making a positive economic and social contribution to South Africa. In 2018 the beer industry contributed 1.53% of GDP at a multiplier of 1.4 which is the same contribution as the mining industry, generating a total GDP impact of ZAR387.1 billion. Between 2015 and 2018 it supported around 200 000 jobs, contributing 1.4% of national employment last year alone. The BASA members also recognise the negative effects of alcohol abuse in communities and are committed to differentiating beer as a product of moderation and leading co-regulation and transformation of the alcohol industry. Tyson remains at Wits Wits captain Thulani Hlatshwayo

Braamfontein - Bidvest Wits CEO Jose Ferreira has confirmed that team captain Thulani Hlatshwayo is staying at the club, warding off speculations about him joining Pirates.. He confirmed that he has signed a contract extension with the Clever Boys until 2022. “He has extended his contract with us. He had a contract until 2021 and we have extended it for another season,” he said. Ferreira said he is pleased that Hlatshwayo decided to stay with the 2016/17 PSL champions. “It shows his commitment to the club and how much we value him as a captain. He has been with us for the last five seasons, winning the league title, MTN 8 and Nedbank Cup,” he said. He has been with the Braamfontein-based side since arriving from Ajax Cape Town in 2014. Hlatshwayo had fueled rumours of a move away earlier this month, saying he wanted a new challenge, but Wits was adamant that he would not leave. Hlatshwayo also doubles up as Bafana Bafana captain. The news should be a relief to coach Gavin Hunt, who recently suggested that the transfer window should close before the start of the PSL season.

Safa Women’s League action over the weekend.

SAFA hails women’s league start Sports Reporter

The start of the SAFA National Women’s League (SNWL) has been hailed as a great success after the league kicked off over the weekend at the Nike Football Training Centre in Pimville, Soweto. SAFA president Danny Jordaan said: “We saw the gap between Sundowns and Richmond Ladies, and you can see that some of these teams don’t have the required facilities, so over time we have to strengthen the playing staff, the management and technical staff of the team and infra-

structure. In the meantime, we are centralizing the games so that each team has an equal chance to do well by playing on good surfaces. It is a process that we have to go through, but I am impressed with the start of the league. I am confident we will grow from strength to strength, we will get to where want to be, and the important thing was to start.” Twenty-three goals were recorded in just two days of action, with 18 of those coming on Match Day 2. Sundowns were the biggest winners (7-0), followed by Golden Ladies and TUT Ladies. Match Day 1 saw

only three goals in three matches, one match failed to produced a winner, the clash between Bloemfontein Celtic Ladies and University of the Western Cape. There are nine Sasol League provincial champions in the SNWL, joined by three invited teams, Bloemfontein Celtic, University of Johannesburg and Sundowns. With Celtic winning the Sasol League in the Free State, secondplaced Tsunami Queens qualified for the SNWL. Gauteng has three teams, while the Free State has two and the rest have one each.
