Test for recall? Test for application? That’s the difference between multiple choice and essay type.
ith good study habits, you’ll be able to reduce your stress and take your exams with
confidence. While building good study habits might seem hard at first, soon your new habits will be part of your routine. You can create good study habits for exams by first setting up a study routine and learning your course material. To better your study habits, you can employ good studying strategies to stay on track and use your learning style to study better. Taking quizzes is a great way to test what you know and reinforce concepts, but making your own quiz is also a fantastic study technique. Building your own quiz using our quiz maker tool, and thinking of appropriate questions and answers, means you will be learning and adding to your stock of knowledge before you even begin the quiz! You can choose from a variety of question types including fill-in-the-blanks, multiple choice, and true or false. You can even add picture labeling questions. You can include explanations as to why answers were right or wrong, so that you fully understand and reinforce your learning when it comes to taking the quiz. Ask someone to quiz you. When you get closer to your exam, ask a parent, friend, or your teacher to quiz you over the information. You can create example questions for them to ask you, have them question you from the review, or let them question you from your notes. This will show you if you need to review any topics before the actual exam Go online and find some sample papers, cut and paste from them and create one paper for yourself.
Things to watch for: • Marks per question – do not overload yourself or set yourself up for failure, make sure the marks add up to 100 so you can work our your percentage • Time per questions. Do not set an exam for two hours that would take 4 hours to complete! • Change numbers and names and also the way the question is asked if you are taking it from your notes. • If you have highlighted keywords in your notes, create questions from those keywords. • Create a study group where if you all contribute one question per topic, a team leader will mix them up and create one exam per group member. This group can constitute 2 people! What type of exam should I set for myself? When are essay exams appropriate? When you are measuring students’ ability to analyze, synthesize, or evaluate Multiple choice exams Multiple choice questions can be difficult to write, especially if you want students to go beyond recall of information, but the exams are easier to grade than essay or short-answer exams. On the other hand, multiple choice exams provide less opportunity than essay or short-answer exams for you to determine
how well the students can think about the course content or use the language of the discipline in responding to questions. Test for recall? Test for application? That’s the difference between multiple choice and essay type. Multiple choice is very time consuming to create. Essay type very difficult for you to self -assess the result. Therefore we conclude the best way to assess your knowledge is with brief questions on various topics assessing both recall as well as application to a value of around 10 marks. Test Yourself Against the Best Find amazing online quizzes created by users around the world. There are so many learning resources created by teachers and students from around the world. This means that you can easily search for Quizzes in any subject you can think of, at any level you want. The experience of doing a simulated test- with the same format and duration as the official examimproves final exam performance. The tests not only help you study the concepts, but also help you learn how to take the exam. Whether it’s photosynthesis, economics or language, you’re sure to find quizzes on the topics you need. Including knowledge assessments into your study routine will help you monitor your progress and improve your planning.

Have a Personal Finance Day every month
Ester Ochse,
“
FNB Financial Advisory Product Specialist
Just as we all enjoy a day to ourselves; be it for shopping or a day at the spa - everyone should have a Personal Finance Day.
What is a personal finance day? “A Personal Finance day is a day set aside each month to sort out your personal finance needs. This will help you better manage your finances and help you ascertain your budgeting goals, expenses and savings for the month ahead. Eventually this practice will become a habit, which will make your life much easier,” says Ester Ochse, FNB Financial Advisory Product Specialist. She adds that, “This day should be circled in your calendar and should be adhered to diligently to ensure that you better manage your finances for the month. It’s not difficult; it just needs commitment and dedication to ensure that you meet your financial objectives and goals every month.” Ochse says that “It’s never too late to get started with your finances. De-
cide on a date each month and stick to it. Sort, label and categorise your excel budget sheets according to your finances, personal or business expenses, savings and entertainment. Ensure that you keep your monthly bills, invoices and receipts in a personal finance box. Alternatively; you can access all your expenses and payments via your online statements.” Managing your finances can be tedious for some; but it also gives you the opportunity to tap into your creative side. Draw up a personal finance journal which will help make budgeting a fun and easy process. Use colour pens, markers, sticky notes, creative icons to make it even more fun. “Managing your finances is the first step to financial wellness and success. It also helps determine
whether you have enough money for your retirement; your child’s school excursion or even that mid-term holiday break to Cape Town We live in a changing economy where the cost of living continues to
rise. The bottom line is that we need to manage our finances now. Being over budget or left with no money can put a huge strain on our pockets which could impact on our health,” concludes Ochse.

passionate and dedicated leader in the community, Dean Dlwati believes that upholding the principles of reducing, recycling and re-using waste are crucial elements required to combat environmental issues that contribute to global warming. In heeding Mayor Herman Mashaba’s call to action, Anglican members of St Mary’s Cathedral are playing an active role in the monthly A Re Sebetseng clean-up campaign in an effort to ensure that the City of Johannesburg is kept clean. The largest component of the campaign is focused on cleaning the city to position it as a job-creating investment city that residents can be proud to call home. Currently, members of the cathedral are targeting Plein, Wanderers and De Villiers streets, which cover the precinct where the church is situated in. Dean Dlwati cites travelling as one of the key factors that have motivated him to ensure that he keeps his surroundings clean. “Since the inception of the campaign, we have been inspired to keep our surroundings clean and manage waste correctly. “We need to always be the pride of the City, a place that is free of dirt and grime.” Over the past seven months, there has been a notable increase in ser-

vices by Pikitup, which is yielding positive results throughout the inner city. Education and awareness are key elements in creating long-term changes in attitudes about waste management necessary to achieve desired outcomes of sustainable patterns of production and consumption. As part of the campaign, the St Mary’s Cathedral will embark on an education drive targeting reclaimers to teach them about the importance of cleaning their surroundings and to further ensure that the campaign is sustainable. “In future, we hope to invite other An-
glican churches with the hope of them implementing and expanding this initiative in their respective areas,” adds Dean Dlwati. It has become imperative for the City of Johannesburg to introduce community initiatives aimed at keeping the city clean and to encourage residents to take personal ownership of efforts to create healthy living environments. The Political Head for Region F, MMC Reuben Masango, says: “We hope that other stakeholders will emulate the Anglican Church in becoming environmental ambassadors committed to the eradication of grime in the inner city.”

Chow4Change initiative making a difference By Staff Reporter news@inner-city-gazette.co.za

JUB JUB (left) and MMC for Health and Social Development Cllr Mpho Phalatse at City’s 3 Kotze Overnight Shelter. JUB JUB urged the displaced people of Joburg to refrain from a life of crime & drugs, he also encouraged them never to give up on their dreams.
he City of Johannesburg and non-governmental organisation New Acropolis as part of the Chow4Change initiative recently organised a luncheon for displaced people in the Inner-City. “It was such fun serving our displaced residents of the City of Joburg. Their appreciation was priceless. This took me back to my first job as a waitress after my matric exams. To serve others is indeed the highest honour,” said MMC Phalatse. The City’s special guest, musician and former prisoner Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye, shared a moving testimony of lessons learnt from his past mistakes. He urged displaced people to refrain from a life of crime and drugs. “The thrill of a three-minute high can lead you to a lifetime of hell.” The director of New Acropolis SA, Guy Hazon, said Chow4Change aimed to restore people’s dignity and self-worth. “We’re not a soup kitchen. What you see today is a culmination of two months of behind the scenes work. Chow4Change is a strategic initiative that aims to give displaced people a shower, new clothes and a choice of meal. In that way, we’re helping restore their dignity.”
“For the first time in my life, I was not treated like a basket case. I was not another statistic. There was botho and not pity in the eyes of the people who helped me look good and fed me today.” These were the words of a beaming Meisie Thokoane. Thokoane said she had been living in the streets for the past seven years after her husband and his sisters had chased her out of her Klipspruit, Soweto, home when she refused to allow another woman to share their marital bed and bear the family boys. She is the mother of three young girls she last saw in July 2011. She joined hundreds of displaced people who had been invited to City’s 3 Kotze Overnight Shelter and given a shower, clothes, dignity packs, a photo shoot and a full on restaurant experience whose waiters included Member of the Mayoral Committee for Health and Social
Development Cllr Mpho Phalatse. Kebonye Senna, the Sub-Unit Head of the City of Joburg’s Displaced People, urged residents not to give the homeless expensive items as most of them end up being resold for a “fix” on the streets. She instead called on residents to deal directly with her unit.
The Chow4Change aims to: - link displaced people to services; - restore dignity of displaced peo ple by treating them with empa thy and not pity; - create awareness about the plight of the displaced persons; - integrate displaced people into communities so as to change to perceptions and deal away with stigma about displaced people, and - encourage community participa tion and volunteerism.
More Shelters are needed in the CBD The City of Johannesburg’s Social Department is dedicated in solving the problems that are faced by displaced people
By Doctor Moyo news@inner-city-gazette.co.za
J
ohannesburg Central Business District (CBD) has more than 6000 people that are displaced; that on it’s on is a crisis. Those who are working tireless about this crisis are saying that this is a result of lack of shelters in the City and social problems that people found themselves in. The City of Johannesburg’s Social Department has a unit that is dedicated in solving the problems that are faced by displaced people. They have a facility called Governor’s House that caters for homeless people in Braamfontein “Our mandate is to assist people leaving and working on the street with the idea in decreasing the number. Our focus is on people that are sleeping on the pavements, however those who are evicted from their flats are an exclusion from our policy,” said Kebonye Senna, from Governor’s house. The facilities have showers which displaced people can use and washing basin that they can also use to wash their clothes. They also help them with counselling through the help of social workers who are al-
ways at the centers. “What happens here is that they are able to take a shower, and wash their clothes. Occasionally when we have enough we give them a meal while they are waiting for their clothes to dry,” said Senna. “They are registered on daily basis, we need to know how many people are using the facility so that we can plan ahead.” “We also teach the displaced people about personal hygiene, sometimes they go out looking for employment and their personal hygiene is very poor. Immediately, as they turn their backs their CVs are torn, sometimes it’s not written properly,” she added. Zane Gordon who is a qualified boiler maker has been living in the street on and off due to the fact that his contracts end and there after it becomes difficult for him to apply for a new job because he doesn’t have a Curriculum Vitae (CV). “It’s through the organisations here in the city that I have managed to equip myself with a boiler making skill. You see what happens with me it’s up and down. The jobs that I usually get are contract based,” said Gordon. Gordon is currently looking for a

and you have to maintain that,” he said. “And in the street you just keep on losing your personal belongings like ID document, and looking for a job without those kinds of documents is difficult.” During the day Gordon is a car
guard in Braamfontein and through that he has found a way of surviving. “There are more challenges that we are facing in the streets, most of the people they just look at it in one direction,” said Gordon. There are stereotypes about people who are living in the streets. Sometimes people see them as lazy, drug addicts and alcoholics. Muzi Jojo on the other hand has been trying to apply for his grant money since 2015, and since that time he hasn’t received his card. “I have gone several times to the SASSA offices to apply for my grant but I have never been helped. I have my ID card and documents that support that I deserve a government grant,”said Jojo Born in the Eastern Cape, Jojo has been in Johannesburg since 2013. He has been in Johannesburg alone without a family. Through interacting with other displaced people he has found refuge here on the streets of Johannesburg. When we went to the SASSA offices, we didn’t manage to get the help for this young man. “I want to be helped, I am human too, I want my life to be better. I will not rest until my case is solved,” concluded Jojo.
