Fearless in the face of torture, imprisonment, banishment and betrayal, she stood firm in her conviction that apartheid could be brought down.

n 1952 people across the country were participating in the Defiance Campaign – a series of coordinated strikes, mass action campaigns, boycotts, and civil disobedience. Madikizela desperately wanted to join the protests, but also keenly felt the sacrifices her family had borne to give her the opportunity to educate herself. She reluctantly sat the protest out and completed her studies. In 1953 she moved to Johannesburg to study social work. She quickly realised that the city of gold was built on the severe exploitation and oppression of black South Africans. Through her work as a young social worker she was exposed to inhumane conditions faced by the black working class: uninhabitable homes, poor sanitation, a lack of security and high infant mortality rates. Her commitment to their

struggles saw her turn down a prestigious scholarship to study at a university in Boston. Instead she joined the staff of Baragwanath Hospital as the country’s first black woman social worker. During this period she became more involved within the broad African National Congress (ANC) networks and the work of the ANC Women’s League.

As we recall Madikizela’s life it’s important to remember that in 1957 – by the age of just 21 and before she met Mandela – she was already extremely accomplished. Her achievements weren’t rare just for a black South African woman in a racist society; they were highly unusual for any woman regardless of class and race in the society at that time.

PICTURED: THE LATE MOTHER OF THE NATION. Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was hailed by her supporters as a feminist icon. She became the leader of the women’s wing of the ANC in 1993, and believed that black women suffered from “a triple yoke of oppression” - their sex, colour and class.

Common debit card misconceptions demystified

D

espite debit cards being the most common form of bank card used by consumers, there are still a number of misconceptions about the card that exist. Ryan Prozesky, FNB Consumer Core Banking CEO, says taking time to get familiar with the overall use and added benefits of a debit card can help consumers realise that it is more than just a tool for withdrawing cash and swiping for purchases. He demystifies some of the common misconceptions about debit cards: A debit card won’t impact my credit profile – this is generally true. However, if you are using an overdraft facility which is linked to your transactional card it

can either help improve or lower your overall credit score. If you do have an overdraft facility, lenders are able to track how you honour your overdraft repayments when deciding whether or not to grant you a loan. Make sure you deposit sufficient funds into your account on a monthly basis to settle your overdraft. You don’t get bank rewards from debit cards – although it is advisable for you to swipe your credit card to get maximum rewards, you can still qualify to get rewards when using your debit card. For example, FNB customers can join the eBucks Rewards Programme for free and get rewarded when using their qualifying debit

cards for certain transactions, such as swiping or shopping internationally. Debit cards can’t be used for online shopping – over the past few years a number of online merchants started accepting debit cards as a form of payment, enabling consumers to conveniently shop online, while still enjoying the same convenience and security measures offered when using a credit card online. Furthermore, VISA or Mastercard credit and debit cards are accepted by all online retailers who display the logos on their websites. Using a debit card is expensive – always opt for swiping or using your card for purchases as this service is offered for free by banks, instead of withdrawing cash which can be ex-

pensive. If you really need cash rather use your debit card to withdraw at selected retailer till points, as this is more cost effective. Lastly, some consumers who have unfortunately been victims of crime still hold the view that debit cards are susceptible to fraud. “Debit cards use the latest security measures and technology in the market. Most of the cards are chip and pin enabled, offering an added layer of security to consumers. However, the onus remains on consumers to always keep their pins and cards safe by employing effective security measures provided by their banks whenever they swipe or use their cards online,” concludes Prozesky.

t is with deep sadness that I have learned of the passing away of the Great Mother of the Nation, Mama Nomzamo Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. It is in the midst of these sad news that I send my condolences to the Madikizela and Mandela families. Winnie Madikizela-Mandela: Anti-apartheid revolutionary By Staff Reporter news@inner-city-gazette.co.za

S

The Late: Winnie Madikizela-Mandela

outh African anti-apartheid activist and former first lady Winnie Madikizela-Mandela passed on aged 81 on Monday. She and her former husband Nelson Mandela, who were both jailed, were a symbol of the country’s anti-apartheid struggle for three decades. Crowds of mourners and political figures flocked to her home in Soweto, in Johannesburg, after news of her death broke. Family spokesman Victor Dlamini confirmed earlier on Monday that Mrs Mandela “succumbed peacefully in the early hours of Monday afternoon surrounded by her

family and loved ones” following a long illness, which had seen her go in and out of hospital since the start of the year. Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was born in 1936 in the Eastern Cape – then known as Transkei. She was a trained social worker when she met her future husband in the 1950s. They went on to have two daughters together. They were married for a total of 38 years, although for almost three decades of that time they were separated due to Mandela’s long imprisonment. It was Mam’ – Mandela who took his baton after he was jailed for life, becoming an international symbol of resistance to apartheid. She too was jailed for her role in the fight for justice and equality. To her supporters, she became known affectionately as “Mother of the Nation”. “In the face of exploitation, she was a champion of justice and equality,” he said on

Monday. “She as an abiding symbol of the desire of our people to be free”. Retired archbishop and Nobel laureate Desmond Tutu said she was a “defining symbol of the struggle against apartheid”. “Her courageous defiance was deeply inspirational to me, and to generations of activists,” he added. Energy Minister Jeff Radebe, reading out a statement on behalf of the family, paid tribute to “a colossus who strode the Southern African political landscape”. “As the ANC we dip our revolutionary banner in salute of this great icon of our liberation struggle,” he said. African National Congress (ANC) chairperson Gwede Mantashe said: “With the departure of Mama Winnie, [we have lost] one of the very few who are left of our stalwarts and icons. She was one of those who would tell us exactly what is wrong and right, and we are going to be missing that guidance.”

After an early set-piece goal from Keegan Ritchie which put the home side ahead at the interval, Maritzburg briefly restored parity

through substitute Mohau Mokate before Buhle Mkhwanazi grabbed an 84th-minute winner. The game in Johannesburg got off to a high-tempo start, with neither side shy to get involved in the physical stuff. But Wits seem to be a reinvigorated outfit these days and they came storming back when Mkhwanazi headed in a Pelembe corner six minutes before the end of regulation time to make it 2-1.
