N

ational Child Protection Week (CPW) is commemorated in South Africa annually to raise awareness of the rights of children as articulated in the Children’s Act of 2005. This year, the focus of the Child Protection Week will be on child labour and exploitation as well as unaccompanied minors from the neighboring countries. The two selected areas for the opening and the closing of the campaign are predominantly farming areas where incidences of child labour and exploitation are prevalent. The 1st of June is commemorated globally as the International Children’s Day. National Child Protection Week is marked annually to raise awareness for the rights of children. It aims to mobilise all sectors of society to care for and protect children. The campaign is led by the Minister of Social Development; however it is incumbent on all of South Africans to play a role in protecting children and creating a safe and secure environment for them. The aim of child protection is to ensure the safety, well-being, care and protection of children through an integrated multi-disciplinary approach. South Africa has drafted legislation which is based on the United Convention of the Rights of the Child, the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child and the Constitution. The latter specifically states that every child has the right to be protected from maltreatment, neglect, abuse or degradation. The Department of Social Development has a

Staying in touch in the world of IT – a moving career

T

o be successful in the information technology (IT) sector, you need to ‘grow’ with technology. And the best way to do this, is to constantly upskill by keeping your studies and certifications up to date, says Shaun Hart, group IT manager at Boston City Campus & Business College. “Every day I oversee the network of our Head Office that serves 300 people, as well as the networks, servers and systems that feed each of our 46 branches. Because the majority of our teaching in the college is technology based, the systems are complex, dealing with over 900 course modules, that must be integrated with the personal details of close to 18000 students! “My department is kept on its toes, travel to other cities is a necessity, and let me warn would-be IT workers that IT is not a 9-5 job!” The college offers a wide selection of IT courses, ranging from an introduction to information technology to IT qualifications in software and security. These IT certifications and computer courses open doors to careers such as application developer, programming specialist, cloud solutions professional, computer technician and network support technician, to name but a few. “The best way to stay relevant in the IT market is to study further in order to keep yourself up- to-date with relevant technologies,” Hart reiterates. “Join or follow IT communities and blogs online - this keeps you informed about the latest trends in the Industry. LinkedIn, Microsoft online communities and Spiceworks are great starting points.” Take another note from Hart’s book he strongly recommends attending IT conferences and boot camps, as this not only allows you to get an in-depth look into new technologies and how they work, but also enables you to interact with vendors in the IT industry as well as network with IT peers. A strong recommendation from Hart is to view job boards. These not only

give you access to the latest jobs on offer, but also gives you insight as to what qualifications, skills or experience employers are actively seeking in your area of expertise. It allows you to compare yourself to what the market is currently looking for, allowing you to study further or “brush up” on skills. In keeping with his advice, Hart is personally studying at present; he is completing training in SharePoint administration. “This is to sharpen my skills in the area and bring them in line with best practices,” he smiles. He is reluctant to emphasise or recommend one course above another because each course has a different purpose and fulfils a different training need. However, he considers the Boston IT diplomas in network systems and systems development as ‘hot’ at the moment, along with the Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) Private Cloud. The diploma in IT systems development is a three-year course on NQF level 6. It focuses on systems management, analysis and design, and includes modules on project management as well as software testing.

A systems developer earns an average salary of R265 131 per year in South Africa. (A skill in JavaScript is associated with the high pay for this job.)

The diploma in network systems is also on NQF level 6. It focuses on network systems and project management and can be completed in three years. The MCSE Private Cloud is an intense course on configuring, monitoring and operating a private cloud with system centre. “If you’re not sure what training or which course to choose, come chat to our student advisors,” suggests Hart. “It is important to choose a qualification that suits your career aspirations as well as your abilities and personality.” Hart points out that Boston has been rated best tuition centre in Africa and third globally by CompTIA, the global IT industry association. “Boston City Campus & Business College is accredited to offer CompTIA certifications such as the CompTIA A+, Network+, Server+ and Security+ among others. We have the highest pass rate of all CompTIA testing centres across Africa,” he says. “You cannot go wrong with a CompTIA certificate such as A+ or Network + as these are internationally recognised and open doors to employment.”

ake a Girl Child to Work Day”, an initiative by Cell C and endorsed by the Department of Education. Each year on the last Thursday of May, a number of female school pupils (Grade 10-12) from a school of choice, usually from disadvantaged backgrounds are hosted by participating organizations to spend a day at their place of work. This year’s Take a Girl Child to Work Day took place on the 26th of May 2016. The theme for 2016 is; “Together we are helping girls dream, believe and achieve”. The main objective of the project is to inspire the female pupils to reach their full potential and to expose them to diverse careers and positive role models. The Public Protector South Africa supports Take a Girl Child to Work Day”, initiative and also uses the project to achieve one of its mandate areas, that of being accessible to all persons and communities. Jazz Epistles with Abdullah Ibrahim and Hugh Masekela Moses Moyo mosesmoyo@icloud.com

F

or two nights, June 15 and 16 these legendary icons, Abdulla Ibrahim and Hugh Masekela will each perform their individual sets on stage at Emperors Palace, Centre Court Arena in the Convention Centre and then collaborate in a much-anticipated, neverbeen-experienced-before grand finale. They will time travel into the nostalgia and perform together, however this time, in a modern and colourful South Africa they could have only dreamt of in their days together. After years in exile and in a liberated South Africa, it is only now, for the first time in 60 years that these two iconic jazz instrumentalists, icons and South African global jazz ambassadors, Abdullah Ibrahim and Hugh Masekela will reunite and perform on one stage. In solidarity and recognition of all those who were a part of the historical 1976 youth march, the Jazz Epistles are reuniting to celebrate the 40th year anniversary of the June 16 occurrence. The Jazz Epistles were South Africa’s earliest, most influential jazz (bebop) band. This was an all-black, all-esteemed band of young, swaggering men.

The Jazz Epistles are reuniting to celebrate the 40th year anniversary

Their adoring fans were mesmerised by their yellows, blues and reds resonating with the piece strolls, swims, dips and swings. Their music filled the dusty streets of the townships and fired the

hearts of the youth who were adamant to stand up for a South Africa that is free and fair. The electric high life of the Jazz Epistles was short-lived after a group spat. Tickets are available at Ticket-

pro and range from R400 up to R3 500 for a hospitality package including accommodation.

Machimana wins SA heavyweight title

I

n possibly the worst South African heavyweight title fight in recent years, Osborne Machimana knocked out the defending champion, Andre Nel, in the fourth round to win the title for the second time at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg over the past weekend. The combined ages of the fighters was an incredible 84 years and Nel weighed in at 120.20kgs and Machmana 121.25kgs. There was very little action from the opening bell, with both fighters holding and pushing through the first three rounds before Machimana knocked out the exhausted Nel in the fourth round. Machmana improves his record to 21-8-2; 16 and Nel’s record drops to 20-12-3; 16. On the undercard, Barend van Rooyen, 38, having his third fight after being out of the ring for 12 years, stopped Jade Karam in the tenth round to win the vacant Gauteng middleweight title.
