ffectionately known as the “Jewel of the East”, the popular Johannesburg landmark lost its shine a number of years ago following high levels of pollution and contamination. The sludge in the lake was a result of washing powder, motor oil, sewage, litter and other debris flowing into it from the Jukskei River. Rehabilitated at a cost of R71.5-million, the much cleaner, fully rehabilitated and environmentally friendly commercial node – which consists of a lake, park and bridge – is expected to boost business confidence in an area that for years has been a source of discomfort and frustration among residents and businesspeople. The unveiling follows several attempts to rejuvenate the lake. Over the years, the City carried out extensive consultations and engineering studies to determine the interventions that needed to be effected to rehabilitate it and restore its sur-

roundings to their natural order and let nature take its course. Solar-powered floaters were installed three years ago but they failed to achieve the desired results. After several interventions to address the pollution and water quality, the lake was closed in 2014 to make way for its conversion into a park. The contractor moved on site in May 2014. The first phase started in June 2014 with the draining of the lake. The Jukskei River was diverted from the centre of
the lake, giving way to the construction of the channel. Phase two, which involved landscaping, was completed in January 2015. As part of improving public safety around the area, which had become a crime hot spot, the project included the rehabilitation of the bridge. Guests of the Mayor included Members of his Mayoral Committee, CoJ officials, City of Ekurhuleni officials and the outgoing Democratic Alliance Ward Councilor Cllr Mike Spadino.

njured passengers crawled through the windows of an overturned bus after it crushed into a car in a serious collision that blocked a highway in Johannesburg’s CBD. Paramedics found the bus lying on its side in the fast lane and at least 40 injured passengers‚ many of them walking around the M1 highway at the M2 split after the collision on Monday evening. Johannesburg metro police spokesman Wayne Minnaar said, “the bus driver had allegedly ran away from the accident scene. But the owners of the Atlantic Charter and Tours bus could not verify that he fled. “Paramedics‚ along with other services‚ arrived on the scene and found the whole highway blocked by the bus and light motor vehicle. Metro services had to close the highway due to the wreckage and debris which covered the highway. “On inspection‚ paramedics found that 41 people‚ including young children‚ had sustained injuries.

Safety tips to motorists to prevent car hi-jacking.
J
ohannesburg Central is investigating several cases where motorists were hi-jacked in the same modus operandi. Therefore, the police would like to sensitise motorists to be extra careful when driving their vehicle especially at night around Johannesburg Central CBD. - Suspects are using women to help them to hi-jack their potential victim, - The woman will bump herself in front of the vehicle that is not at high speed, - When a driver stops his car to inspect the injuries of the victim, male suspects will come and overpower the driver, - They will take the car and rob the victim of his/her belongings. - Working together between the Police and the motorists can subdue car hi-jacking around the JHB CBD.
