ikitup, the City of Johannesburg’s waste management entity rolled out a vigorous campaign themed Collecting New Possibilities, which forms part of a bigger waste management strategy to minimise waste going to landfill sites and minimise waste going to landfill sites. The campaign seeks to educate, empower and encourage the residents of Joburg to take back their City and reclaim Jozi. The campaign will inspire residents to start creating new possibilities for themselves and their communities through recycling initiatives. The platform will mobilise and engage all sectors of society to actively participate in delivering a cleaner Joburg through responsible waste management. We acknowledge that more work needs to be done to encourage communities, though, SMMEs and Cooperatives, participate meaningfully in the eco-

nomic value chain that accrues from recycling. “The City aims to increase residents’ participation, however to achieve this, more needs to be done in order to change the mind-set of the Joburg citizens. It is against this backdrop that the City will embark on a four month clean-up campaign. The first cleanup campaign was held in Joubert park around the JHB Art Gallery. The campaign marked the first of many clean-ups that will be conducted by the City under the “Team Up to Clean Up” banner. The clean-ups will continue every Saturday until 25 June 2016. “We therefore call upon all residents of the city to be environmental activists and vanguards of their open spaces by taking part in initiatives geared to make Johannesburg a World Class African City,” says Amanda Nair, Pikitup Managing Director. “The aim of the cleanup campaign is to mobilise society at large to become active citizens in cleaning up their neighborhoods, back yards, streets, schools or local parks in an effort to keep the environment clean and safe to live in. This initiative will be rolled out in all the seven regions of Johannesburg. All depots of Pikitup will be participating in cleaning up

identified hot spots in their respective areas,” says Nair. The City and Pikitup acknowledge that the goal of becoming a world class African city can only be achieved if we work together. This requires partnerships and participation from various stakeholders. “Behavioural change in the home, in the workplace and in the schools is key to the success of waste prevention and minimisation. The City also calls on corporate SA to rally behind the campaign and support in achieving these goals by participating in the business briefing sessions that will be taking place during March 2016 Residents can get more details about the clean-up site on www.pikitup. co.za, call 0860 5628 74 or follow “A Cleaner Joburg” on Facebook and on Twitter: @CleanerJoburg. ulama Gcuku was given the special honour of being one of three programme directors for the 2016 Johannesburg south SASCE, SEGARONA and

Spelling Bee Y&C district awards which was held in Lenasia South. The event focused on empowering learners to participate in cultural extra curricular activities such as drama, dance, music, public speaking, spelling, poetry, comedy, reading and visual arts. Lulama was asked to open the ceremony by leading the National Anthem. However, there was a technical error with the sound system. Lulama improvised and began singing in a beautiful voice while the crowd joined her. Talented learners all over the country showcased their creative abilities leaving department officials, teachers and guests in awe. There was a variety of youth entertainment from gumboot dances, mimes, sopranos, dramas, stand up comedy and spectacular choir performances. The event was concluded by awarding learners who participated in the Segarona Competitions. Lulama scooped up another award for taking first position in the Provincial Spelling Bee which took place last year. “We are proud of Lulama for doing a fantastic job in representing CityKidz once again.” Mrs Lorgat said.

Lapeng daycare centre at the forefront in Joubert Park

E

stablished in 1997 Lapeng daycare centre in the middle of Joubert Park in Johannesburg has had a remarkable transformation in the last year. The daycare centre facilitates 104 children with the aim of providing a safe and nurturing environment for children and their families. The centre has struggled in the past since insufficient funds, lack of electricity and run down facilities made the centre a threat to the children and an undesirable daycare. Standard Bank got involved with Lapeng a few years back through the banks national corporate volunteer programme focusing on early childhood development. This initiative from Standard Bank has resulted in a vegetable garden, a new playground, provision of educational toys, refurbished kitchen, electrical repairs and painting of walls. Research and observations made from the Lapeng caregivers reflected that the enhanced environmental conditions have had a positive impact on the behaviour of children. “We can now also provide healthy

and nutritious meals to our children every day – harvested from our very own vegetable garden. This has lowered our monthly food costs and the caregivers find joy in the preparation of the food”, says Mathibedi Nthidi, principal of Lapeng. “Members of the community are also beginning to value, through our enhanced services, how crucial early childhood development is for the well-being of their children”. Lapeng is at the forefront of crèches in the area being one of the few who have access to a grassy area and a playground. “Thanks to Standard bank we have a playground and we can now invite other crèches in the area, resulting in 500 kids having access to a place to play and exercise on a weekly basis. Lapeng has grown enormously over the last years and today we have to put children’s names on waiting lists since we are so popular. The painting of walls and the installation of the kitchen really turned our daycare around to being at the forefront of crèches in the middle of Johannesburg”, says Mathibendi Mthite coordinator at the daycare.

Gold Mine Adds to Swazi King’s Wealth

Faustin-Archange Touadera

Touadera elected president CAR - Central African Republic’s constitutional court confirmed former mathematics professor Faustin-Archange Touadera, has been elected president, national radio reported on Tuesday, setting the stage for Touadera to be sworn in later this month. About 62 percent of voters in the Central African Republic chose Touadera, once a prime minister under ousted leader Francois Bozize, in a run-off that could cap nearly three years of political, communal and religious conflict. The country suffered the worst crisis in its history in early 2013 when mainly Muslim Seleka fighters toppled Bozize. Christian so-called anti-Balaka militias responded by attacking the Muslim minority. A fifth of the population have fled their homes to escape the violence.

Barclays to exit Africa

arclays Plc will sell its Africa business as part of a plan by new Chief Executive Jes Staley to simplify the bank’s structure and seek higher shareholder returns, it said after reporting a 2 percent profit drop and slashing its dividend. The British lender plans to sell its 62 percent stake in Barclays Africa Group over the next two to three years, ending its presence on the continent after more than a century and becoming a “transatlantic” bank focused on the United States and Britain. NIGERIA - Nigeria’s ex-interior minister has been charged with fraud over a botched recruitment drive, which resulted in stampedes that left 20 people dead. Abba Moro led a scheme which encouraged young graduates to apply for jobs in the immigration ministry in March 2014. Stadiums, which were being used as test centres, were overwhelmed by huge crowds of people turning up to apply. Mr Moro has pleaded not guilty to his role in an alleged $2.5m (£1.8m) fraud, involving missing application fees. There is a high level of unemployment in Nigeria, especially among young people.

Raring to go! Kyle Abbott

South Africa’s run of form has seen them move to second on the T20 world rankings

Durban - The Proteas might be just weeks away from the start of the ICC World Twenty20, but their focus is firmly on the upcoming threematch T20 series against Australia, South Africa fast bowler Kyle Abbott said in Durban on Wednesday. South Africa’s first game against Australia is at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead in Durban, before the series moves to Johannesburg and Cape Town before the Proteas travel to India for the World T20 with their first game against England on

Neat and clean rooms from R250.00 two people. We have twin, double, luxury and 3 or 4 sleepers. We are very close to the Carlton Centre and major shops and factories. Food outlets are also nearby.

March 18. “To be quite honest, we haven’t looked too much at the World Cup. We have put our emphasis on this series. At the end of the day it is a series to win. Yes it is good preparation (for the WT20) but we are going to take this series as seriously as any other series. It is just a bonus that it is in the build up to the World Cup,” Abbott told a news conference. “We are not looking too far ahead. When we get to India we have eight

or nine days before our first game so we will start focusing more on the World Cup when we get there,” he added. The Proteas have been on a fine run of form in T20 cricket and have secured series wins against Bangladesh, India and England this year while they shared a series with New Zealand. The run of form has seen South Africa move to second on the T20 world rankings and Abbott hopes that the team, in particular the bowl-

ing unit, can keep up their good form against a powerful Australia outfit while Abbott also pointed out how influential bowling coach Charl Langeveldt has been for the team “As a bowling unit I think we’ve bowled really well. From Bangladesh, through India and in the recent series against England. We are always learning. “He’s (Langeveldt) been very good with us, especially at the ‘death’ and we’ve put a lot of emphasis on that. If we are bowling first to stop momentum at the back of an innings or closing out when defending, it’s a massive part of the game. We’ve got guys now that have been around a bit. “Immy (Imran Tahir) is probably one of the leading T20 bowlers in the world. Chris Morris and David Wiese have played a lot of Indian Premier League cricket.” “They might not necessarily have played a lot of international cricket, but they have played a lot of T20 cricket and that helps. We are identifying our roles, exactly what each one needs to do at what time of the game and it has worked for us over the last 10 games or so,” he explained.

Chippa United coach Dan Malesela

Chippa aiming for top five

C

hippa United could end the season with as high as a top-five finish said coach Dan Malesela, but a top-eight place would continue to be their primary focus as they move into the business end of the Premier Soccer League campaign. The Eastern Cape club have surprised this season with their results and after a 1-1 away draw with Ajax Cape Town at the Athlone Stadium on Tuesday night remain in sixth place in the standings. “There is a possibility to go up or stay where we are. It all depends on how we handle it, how we handle ourselves,” explained Malesela, who took over from Roger Sikhakhane in December and has since amassed a record of six wins, four defeats and a draw in his 11 matches in charge in his first spell with a top-flight club. “If we drop points at this stage, we run the risk of not achieving anything, but with the way this team has been playing, I doubt if we’ll really lose a lot of games. I doubt that will be the case,” a confident coach added. Chippa have eight league matches remaining, with four at home including Orlando Pirates and four away. This includes tricky trips to meet SuperSport United, Bidvest Wits and Kaizer Chiefs, who Chippa play on the last day of the season on May 21. “I like setting high standards and sometimes my wife says to me ‘you are being too hard on yourself. ” Malesela said.
