HEALTHCHECK TIP

Ginkgo tree (Ginkgo biloba)

Eat colorful fruits and vegetables like tomatoes, mangoes, carrots, blueberries and squash. The deeper the colors, the more nutrients they contain.

Derived from the leaf and seed of the tree, Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) is used to treat cerebal circulation, dementia, peripheral vascular disorders, sexual dysfunction resulting from selective serotonin reuptake inhibitrs, (SSRIs), hearing loss, and more. It may have a modest benefit in memory improvement in healthy people, patients with dementia, and those with Raynaud’s disease.

THE APOLLO CHORUS When the Apollo Chorus of Chicago sings, great choral works come alive. Founded in1872 after the Great Chicago Fire, this powerful150-voice chorus is one of the city’s most exciting and talked-about musical organizations. Each season Apollo thrills audiences with beautiful music old and new, winning praise for its performances – especially for Handel’s Messiah. Here’s what the Chicago Tribune had to say about an Apollo Messiah concert: [Dr. Alltop] has his troops fully committed to his historically informed methods. Tempos are almost uniformly quicker than the norm 30 years ago. Uninterrupted legato and dirge-like tempos have been superseded by a view that this musical era deserves its own set of performance criteria. The Apollo Chorus began its annual performances of Messiah in1879, soon after the group was founded. In 2000, under the direction of Music Director and Conductor Stephen Alltop, Apollo began performing the complete version of this magnificent work. As Dr. Alltop says, “While our history is long and rich, it is the commitment to constantly elevating artistic standards in the great music we perform that energizes our work together. We strive to bring out new discoveries and feelings in each performance.” Beyond Messiah, the Apollo Chorus performs a wide range of masterworks for chorus and orchestra. Under the skilled and passionate direction of Dr. Alltop, the chorus has performed Beethoven’s Mass in C, Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, Brahms’ A German Requiem, Bruckner’s Te Deum, Durufle’s Requiem, Haydn’s The Creation, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, and Orff’s Carmina Burana, among others.

G

STEPHEN ALLTOP Stephen Alltop has built a career based on excellence in several disciplines. He is one of the most versatile conductors and keyboard artists of his generation, with experience that includes conducting stylish Baroque performances with leading period instrument musicians as well as world premieres by prominent American composers, programming a highly successful series of educational concerts, and performing as an organist and harpsichordist with such distinguished organizations as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Minnesota Orchestra. At home in choral works from Monteverdi to Orff and orchestral repertoire from Bach to Mahler, Dr. Alltop became the Music Director and Conductor of the Apollo Chorus in 1997. Since then, he has not only led the chorus in masterworks such as Bach’s Mass in b minor and Haydn’s The Creation, but has also guided Apollo’s activities to include appearances at the Ravinia Festival and Peninsula Music Festival, and expanded its repertoire in both early and contemporary music, from works of the Mexican baroque period to the compositions of Eric Whitacre. Dr. Alltop’s outstanding work with Apollo was recognized by critics at “Time Out Chicago” magazine, who recommended Apollo’s Messiah to readers: Conductor Stephen Alltop is well known around here for his choral expertise, and with him leading the affair, your traditional Messiah is in good hands (and voices). Dr. Alltop has been a member of the conducting faculty of Northwestern University since1992 and is the ninth music director in the over130-year history of Apollo Chorus.
