COLLECTION The theme of the Aava acoustic textile collection is based on our cherished fells and slopes of Lapland - places where the tranquillity of Finnish nature are present in an unique way. Like a gentle wind in arctic hill, the textiles in the collection carry away unwanted noise and bustle, bringing in peace and calm instead. Aava Collection is your most stylish partner to improve sound environment of the indoor spaces. Collection consist 12 innovative curtain fabrics with excellent acoustic absorption values (α W= 0.50– 0.80), they are lightweight and easy to hung (weights 70–178 g/m 2) and provide stunning looks (see sample on other side).
Aava collection textiles are specially engineered to dampen indoor echo and improve sound environment. Aava textiles typically dampen 5080 percent of the incoming sound. In comparison, typical lightweight non-acoustic textiles reach typically only 5-10 percent acoustic absorption.

TEXTILE DESIGNER
The collection Woven Sounds is a combination of designing functional textiles and visual patterns with the same concept of sound. Two different sketching methods were used: digital sound responsive audiovisual sketching and material cymatics sketching. Played sounds generated the visuals independently through either a material medium or an algorithm capturing the essence of that particular sound. Sound appears in the fabrics both as woven and digitally printed patterns, and as structural inspirations.

Designer Petra Haikonen Something calm, Nordic and even hint of something holy can be seen in PYHĂ„. Quite the contrary, the design has born through interference (an effect caused by the superposition of two systems of waves) by two songs playing cacophonously: The Weight of Gold by Forest Swords and Transmisiones Ferox by Boards of Canada.

Oobleck is an intriguing material, since it is a non-Newtonian fluid that has both liquid and solid nature. It is a mixture of 1 part water and 1.5 or 2 parts of cornstarch. If enough force is directed to oobleck, it will instantly thicken. Therefore it is possible to even quickly walk on it. If the force is not strong enough, the material will become liquid. When oobleck is put on top of a speaker of a subwoofer, the low frequencies played at high volume cause the material to thicken, and to start forming vertical moving figures in response to the played frequencies. (Lifescience 2012.) I did some experimentation with mixing oobleck with paints, and realized that when a drop of ink was placed on top of oobleck, it started mixing itself creating a marble pattern.
