S

ince I first picked up a pencil I knew that I wanted to be an artist, it is my one passion in life that no one can tear away from me. I have been drawing and painting from a very young age, competing with my older sisters, I wanted to be better than them and that is how I learnt to always keep improving and practicing my skills. I only discovered digital art about two years ago and it was like learning how to draw all over again. Once I stared digital art and realised its possibilities, I was hooked. I am now a 20 year old freelance digital illustrator/ artist from Cape Town, South Africa. I am a self taught digital artist, but in high school I strived in traditional pencil sketches of people and portraits. I received 91% for visual art in grade 12. I still draw almost everyday and take the time to study the art of other great digital artist. I participate in as many art challenges and competitions as I have time for which encourages me to constantly become better. To keep on improving, I also read through tutorials and workshops for tips on digital painting. In 5 years time I would like to be well known in the illustration

industry and I would like my artwork to be spread all over the world. In the future I would like to have tried my hand in everything art related and I will always keep on pushing my art to new levels and keep practicing. As a young artist, I know that I still have a lot to learn and that I still have a lot that I can improve on. I would like to improve my skills in painting landscapes and man made objects like cars, buildings and objects. I would love to illustrate more children’s books and try my hand at concept art, story boarding, animation and 3D art.

My style & creative process

I would describe my style as eclectic as I am influenced by many different things and my style changes frequently. I always try to experiment with new styles, techniques and subject matter in order to broaden my horizons and it also stops me from getting bored or too comfortable in one style. Trying new things also keeps me motivated and inspired. I enjoy painting macabre art for album covers just as much as I enjoy doing cute children’s book illustrations. I usually start by sketching out thumbnails of whatever pops into my head. As I draw I begin to come up with ideas to develop the image further. In the sketching phase I try to get a well balanced composition. I then begin to collect reference images and start to refine my sketch once I am happy with the thumbnail. Then I move over to adding base colors in Photoshop. I always aim for a harmonious color palette and I like to use a warm light source. After I am happy with the colors I start to add shading and highlights as well as little details to tighten the image up. I use custom brushes throughout my painting process. When painting I always try to create an atmosphere that will reflect the emotional state of the subject. Once my painting is near completion I usually play around with texture overlays and blending modes. I also like to add a slight noise filter over the top of the image when doing portraits as I feel that it adds a nice texture to the skin. Applying an unsharp mask at the end of the painting process brings out the details in the brush strokes and makes it look like a traditional painting.

Paintings:

Sweet Dreams – I like to draw big, oversized, gigantic, fluffy animals. This image shows the relationship children have with animals. It depicts trust and friendship. Flying Zebra – I wanted to create a dreamy atmosphere with a dynamic composition. In this painting I wanted to depict the wild and vivid imagination of children. Katya – This character I did is based on my sister’s little daughter Katya. She is even cuter in real life. Here I was inspired by Pixar characters. Keiko – This character I designed for a school project. I was illustrating a short children’s book that I wrote about a little girl who always dreamt about flying. I decided to revamp her a little with inspiration from the Pixar movie “Up”. Sammy Swordfish – This is the cover for my most recent children’s book that I am currently illustrating. Written by Chanelle Meyer. Chilling – This piece I did for a monthly IFX challenge with the theme “Chilling”. I wanted to depict children relaxing on a sunny afternoon, eating ice cream after playing in the park.

Inspiration:

I basically find inspiration everywhere I go and in everything I do. I am inspired by the harmonious colours and textures you can find in nature and animals. I am also inspired by the people around me. Studying the way people act, move and dress up in different occasions and ages has really improved my art, especially doing sketches from life. I love the art of Manga and Anime and it influences my art enormously as well as Pixar animation and old school Disney cartoons. I find inspiration in music, books and movies too. Artists that influence and inspire me are Stanley Lau, HR Giger, Erik Jones and Hayao Miyazaki to name a few. If I could be like one artist it would be Stanley Lau, because he is an amazing digital artist and he is always experimenting with new techniques. Apart from art, I am interested in animals; I have always had a love and a connection with them. I love reading, especially Suspense novels. My favourite writers are Stephen King and Dean Koontz. I love Anime, I could watch it all day; Spirited Away, My neighbour Totoro,

Haha… If people want to contact me or brows my work I am on a lot of social networks that people can find me on including DeviantArt, ImagineFX, facebook, Twitter, Behance and Linkedin. I mainly work on a commission basis, but I have a few digital images that can be bought as well as a few prints for children’s rooms that I have for sale.

Bharat K.V.

I

am an independent Brand Consultant/Web Designer based in Madurai, India. I have been drawing and painting even before I actually realized it. Though I ended up being an engineer, Art was always there at the back of my mind. I never had any formal training in art as such, I was fortunate I had a brief workshop when I was 12. That improved my standard of works, Thanks to my Guru. Mythology, Comics & Cinema (yes, in that order) are my favorites. I guess most of my inspirations come from there and I am from a country full of colors, heavily loaded with art & heritage. Anything and everything around inspires me. Thanks to the internet, I get to see what other artists are up to. Helps big time in the learning curve. I am mostly into Portraits, Caricatures being my forte. I love the digital medium too. Most of my works are into the mixed media these days. That’s where I enjoy the process and the way things evolve. Apart from art &design, I love to hang around with buddies, a big fan of A R Rahman’s music, I play Gully Cricket… There are quite a lot of artists who have inspired me like Frank Miller, Salvador Dali, Ravi Varma, Artgerm , but I would aspire to be as versatile as Leonardo Da Vinci, He’s mind-blowing and my biggest role model in the art world. As of now I haven’t been selling my artworks. It has been more of a hobby to let out my creative outburst. But I am open to that in the future. I am not sure if my artworks will bring about a change etc, I would love to create artworks that would spark a smile and help spreading peace and happiness.

Kristina Gehrmann

H

i! My name is Kristina, 21 years old, I’m an illustrator with a focus on fantasy, mythology and historical subjects. My preferred media is Photoshop and Wacom Intuos tablet. Originally I’m from a small town near Düsseldorf, Germany. I’ve always loved drawing and painting, and have been painting digitally for more than 5 years. My strongest influences probably are 1) Old Master paintings, 2) Random ideas, 3)Stories I’ve read. I’m also inspired by the work of my favorite artists - J. M. William Turner, Donato Giancola, Waterhouse, Rembrandt, Odd Nerdrum, Millais, Sargent. I graduated from high school in 2008 and now I’m studying classical drawing and painting at Angel Academy of Art in Florence, until summer 2011. I hope to stay a student (formally) as long as possible. Maybe until I’m 27, if I’m lucky! (I’m already lucky enough to have very supportive parents). Then, I want to become a full-time professional illustrator. When not painting, I’m probably sticking my nose into a book – I love everything that entertains and contains interesting characters. I like Boccaccio’s Decamerone, Wagner’s Lohengrin, Patrick Süskind’s Perfume and old myths and stories in general, and as well novels of all kind.

t is never really easy to talk about myself, so filling in more than a few sentences will be quite difficult for me. But I think I will start by introducing myself: I am Andreea Muntean, better known as Dushky, I am from Timisoara, Romania and I draw ever since I can remember. I still recall the first real drawing I made, that was not just a random doodle, house or a picture of my family. One day, in pre-school, I noticed that this girl was drawing Ariel the little mermaid, and all the other kids were begging to get a drawing from her. I got so jealous and I said to myself that I was going to make an even better drawing than hers. So I went through all of my Disney comic books and I found the Cinderella story. And so I traced that particular character for weeks, over and over again, until I could draw it from memory. It was not too long after that, when I decided that art is what I

would like to do. Therefore I went to art school and I’ve been studying it for 13 years now. It was only in high-school when I could finally choose a certain field and so I chose fashion design. I often get questioned of how I got to where I am now, as far as drawing techniques and so on, and I always say it takes a lot of time, determination, willpower, practice and‌ well I guess you just have to love what you do in order to accomplish something. I am very honored when people write on my blog or on my Deviant Art account and say that they can tell, just by looking at a drawing, that it is mine; that they can see distinct features in my drawing style. So if I had to define my style in fashion illustration it would be a detailed, calculated, colourful, (sur-)realistic and dushky-ish image. I like to believe that a true artist is always

evolving, therefore re-creating himself, so I try not to put a label on what I do and who I am. A few years back I started promoting myself online, I got an account on Deviant Art and created my on-line portfolio and soon after I received a good amount of positive feedback. That gave me confidence even more that I was on a good path. Soon after I created a blog and a website (which is still in construction) and this has helped me reach people all over the world that I normally wouldn’t have. Also, the fact that I manage all my accounts myself helps me to stay in touch with all these people that find my art to be inspiring. Over the years I had various projects and collaborations, the most important being the collaboration with Uman Shop (www.u-man.ro), a local business. I also participated in various events and exhibitions; you can find all the stories and pictures on my blog, in the “Projects” section. Fashion wise, I debuted with my first collection in 2009, entitled “Carnivale”. The collection was based on

the concept of “all world’s a stage” and a satire to the circus society we live in today. It was a game of colours, shapes, layers and textures as components of the circus world. After that I had two other fashion projects, mini-collections, that involved the concept of the “construction and deconstruction of shape”, where I experimented with fabrics and unconventional materials. I will also be using this concept in my next collection as part of my MA degree, which is due this summer, on June 29th. Meanwhile I will keep searching for new ideas, shapes, concepts, moods and feelings that will inspire me to keep moving forward. Anything and everything inspires me. The world surrounding me is just a field that needs to be harvested. I think innovation comes when you make two unfit pieces come together so now, I just have to find that piece that fits. I really don’t know where I would be in the next five or ten years, I really can’t plan that far ahead even though I succeed in organising things. But I like to think that someday I will be a successful designer or artist, and I will not stop until I reach that goal because I am certain that this is what I’m meant to do.

Cyril Kruglov | Tattoo Illustration

“During my studies I was interested in subcultural art, especially street-art. I drew and pasted some posters in my home city (St. Petersburg, Russia).”

M

y name is Cyril Kruglov, my nickname is Dafake. I am an artist specializing in tattoo graphics. I’m also working on my tattoo brand clothing Designflavour ltd. This is one of the first tattoo brands in Russia. I was always attracted to art, especially drawing. Even in the age of 9, I attended art school. After I went study as animatorartist. During my studies I was interested in subcultural art, especially street-art. I drew and pasted some posters in my home city (St. Petersburg, Russia). My work on the street saw the curator of the exhibition in the Russian Museum (This is one of the oldest museums in the world specializing in avantgarde art of the 20th century), and then he found me via the internet and I participated in the exhibition «Art about art». For me it was a very significant event, because my work recognized not only by my friends who have supported me, but artists and art historians. After some time I discovered the world of tattoos. Something that has always been close to me and what I did not notice, it became for me a revelation. I was carried away by this art. I began learning to draw traditional tattoo designs. I met with very talented people in this culture in my city. And after a while became an independent artist in this direction. At that time I was involved in the release of T-shirts with my prints. They basically were bought by my friends and friends of

friends. Then I thought that it would be good to use in clothing prints based on traditional tattoo motifs. And then I and my partner in business decided to develop a collection of bikini with tattoo prints to a tattoo convention in St. Petersburg. Two weeks later, I worked hard as cursed and drew swallows, roses, eagles and etc. When we made and published it, we realized that this has not been done in Russia ever before and it was a big breakthrough. We invited 12 fetish models for walk on catwalk at the tattoo convention. People were ecstatic! Then I realized that my ideas and work are ready to buy and wear not only by my friends. After that we began to produce and develop our brand. Produce more and more clothing with my tattoo prints. Now I use a mixture of styles in my works. I combine Russian motives with traditional old-school images of tattoos (such as Sailor Jerry). I am inspired by many masters of the genre such as: Uncle Allan, Mike Giant, Adam Isaac Jackson, Mr. Cartoon, guys from Sullen clothing. All of these people are legends to me in the tattoo designs. Also I’m inspired by music. Music is the foundation of all, it encourages me to work the most. I grew up on heavy music, always fond of metal, rock and punk rock. All this of course affected my work. At the moment my company is the only full-fledged apparel brand with a tattoo orientation, made and produced in Russia. I think that soon we will be able to enter the international market, because very often different people from different countries write me with desire to buy clothes with my prints. That the best regard for me. Basically, I post my art on deviantArt there you can find them and on another couple of Russian sites. Since I work at myself, I do not sell my art to other people; also I do some custom works, for other brands. Also very often I draw sketches for tattoos. I like it most of all. Prints on clothing or on the canvas are not so eternal, live a tattoo that will be with the person until the end of life much better. This is the most expensive for the artist, what his art remained at least for 50 years.

Q&A

question and answer

with photographer

Raffaele Franco “I have no specific style, to be honest. It depends on my mood, some days I prefer to take portraits, others I prefer landscapes...” Why don’t you introduce yourself? OK. My name is Raffaele Franco; I am from Italy, living in the big city of Palermo. I’m 26 and I don’t work as photographer. Why did you point out that you are “not” a professional photographer? Because I don’t define myself a “photographer”. I’m just a guy with a strong passion for photography. Good point. Talking about photography, what would you say is your style? I have no specific style, to be honest. It depends on my mood, some days I prefer to take portraits, some others I prefer landscapes or also street photography, trying to catch emotions from random people.

So you’re saying photography is a subjective art, it can reflect your own feelings and emotions? Sometimes and sometimes not. Let me try to explain. Emotions influence everything we do, and especially something created by our soul, like a photo. However, I don’t use to take pictures following my emotions (maybe sometimes…), what I hardly try to do is catch external emotions, from portraits, from street, even from landscapes. Most of the times I can’t, but sometimes, rarely, I take a photo that is full of … something, full of a feeling, or an emotion. And when it happens, well, it is really exciting. Do you prefer black and white or colors? Both. Black and white gives a dramatic look to some portraits, but sometimes I prefer a good use of the colors. Obviously, landscapes are always colored. How did you get started with photography? It began as a game, long time ago. Well, not so long, we’re talking about...11 years ago. I got a very old digital camera as a gift, a cheap and crappy one, and it was love at first sight. After some years, spent taking stupid pictures with friends, I decided to buy my first digital SLR camera, a Nikon D50, and from that moment I’ve started to study photography for real and not just for playing. Have you attended any photography courses or is it just a hobby? Well, I have always studied on my own, I didn’t attend, and it’s something that is part of me. It’s like a hobby, but it’s not. It’s my way to work off the stress, to feel better, and especially to communicate a little part of my soul to other people. Do you work with professional models? Not really. They’re usually my friends, although sometimes I take pictures of people I don’t know. How many models have you taken pictures of? Mmmh. I can’t be sure. 20? 25? So many? They’re currently less than 10 on your website. Not all the photo sessions I’ve done are on the website. If a friend asks me to not put his/her pictures on my internet, I don’t. I need to know they accept to have their photo on my website; otherwise I don’t publish them on everywhere. Honest. When you work on a photo-project, what’s your favorite step? I especially like the instant after I shoot the picture, do you know when you see the photo

32

Innovated Magazine: Issue Four

Raffaele Franco | Photography

on the camera monitor? I got it. Who are your influences with photography? Can I confess you something? Of course. I’m totally ignorant about the history of photography, I should study, I know, I know. It is important, but not always required if one has the talent. How did you get to where you are now? I’m not so good; I think everyone could get to where I am, all you need is practice, practice and, guess what? Practice. Have you ever entered your work into contests? Yes and no. Yes and no? What do you mean? I had the chance to participate in some contests or also make an exhibition with my works, but

only after being pushed by some friends. I tend not to do any of this stuff; photography is my way to relax. Exhibitions, contests, projects etc. would cause me stress, stress, stress. Where would be the relaxation? Once you take the picture, do you edit it with a photo editor, like Photoshop or another program? Yes, I always use RAW format, so it requires some editing. However, I also like to edit curves and color balance, but nothing more. Sometimes I play with HDR (High Dynamic Range) technique, but I repeat they’re just experiment; I’m not good with editing. I see on your website you travel a lot. How much influence do your tips have on your work? A lot. Especially because my hand baggage is always heavier than the limits, cause of camera,

lenses and netbook. Netbook? Why a computer? One picture (jpg + RAW) is about 60 megabytes. With a 4 GB compact flash card I can take around 110-120 photos, do you think I can take just 120 photos during a 4 days travel? Why don’t you carry more memory cards? I would have spent almost as I did for the netbook. What kind of equipment do you currently use? I have like twenty lenses I’ve bought through years, old and new, but what I mostly use are three: Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8, Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 and an old manual focus Vivitar 24mm f/2.8, awesome. However, when I travel or do photo shoots, I always have my Nikon 50mm f/1.8 with me. And the camera? Currently I own a Nikon D700. But half of the pictures on my website are taken with my old Nikon D50. Wow. Thank you so much for your time and it was a pleasure meeting you and having the chance to talk.

We greatly appreciate you taking the time to tell us a little more about who you are, your work and how you arrived at this moment in your life and “hobby”. We are happy to be sharing your work with our readers. Thank you again for your time, and good luck. Oh no, I should thank you, for the chance you have given me. It was a pleasure.

Interact the artist’s way. 36

Kat Powell | Illustration

Hi,

ting

my name is Kat Powell and I am a Lubbock Texan born and raised.

W

ell I suppose the proper thing to talk about first would be my start as an artist. As a kid I never did any drawing or painting or anything artsy. Like every other kid I wanted to be the President-Astronaut-Lawyer of the Moon. By the time a doodle came out of me I was probably 14, a very late start by comparison to some, and it wasn’t an impressive start considering I could barely draw piss-poor stick figures. Growing up my older sister was ‘the artist’ in the family, but I came along and usurped the hell out of that title. Being the younger sibling I couldn’t help but to mimic her as she showed me how to draw. Unbeknownst to her, I was not going to accept drawing as a handme-down. I ended up taking over the roll as ‘the artist’ in the family. Don’t worry she’s not bitter, she has her own endeavors plus she gets to brutally critique any and all art I do. She is my second harshest critic, the first being myself. And I must give thanks to my parents whom have been embarrassingly supportive of me and my art. Now then let’s one, two, and skip a few years to my college days. At Texas Tech University I earned a BFA in Studio Art with an emphasis in painting and drawing, all at the sacrifice of years of beauty sleep. Trust me out of all the papers I’ve received from school this degree is destined for a frame on my wall and not a magnet on the refrigerator. The formal training I received at Tech was very beneficial. It was during this time that my art skills developed very rapidly. Not just because of the techniques I was taught but because of the conversations I had….or mostly listened too. Yea I’m an introvert. Since childhood I’ve always had a hard time connecting with other people, especially in person. But art has made interaction much easier, which is why I’ve created a series of images involving the little skeletons you see. They may not talk but they express themselves quietly through their body gestures. They exist as my own little caricatures and they have assumed the role as catalyst between people and me. Creating them and creating art has somewhat rescued me from awkward exchanges and clumsy small talk, which I am an expert at!

Each image I create holds its own narrative, purpose, and world. If I were to peg down a theme in my art I would have to say that I’m more interested with people’s innards along with oddities in science, nature, and history.

Each image I create holds its own narrative, purpose, and world. If I were to peg down a theme in my art I would have to say that I’m more interested with people’s innards along with oddities in science, nature, and history. Much like fairy tales and fables, half of the imagery I use is grounded in reality while the other half is purely fantasy. And I know why my work has developed this way. Throughout my life the days have been monotonous and the nights have been filled with dreamless sleep. So in between I daydream. Every time I’m sitting quietly or walking alone I’m constantly thinking of images and of stories that I can create. It’s a relentless thing; some of the daydreams are excellent fodder for art while others just blow away with the wind. Either way I can’t stop it…..it’s particularly pestering at bed time. The artwork I create is like an adult reminiscing about their childhood, you keep the whimsy and silliness but you add in the reality, that is how you keep yourself grounded. I’m fond of the isolation that came with shyness; the physical disconnection that came from the many long stays at the hospital; even the separation in class due to my dyslexia has given me unique memories. In a weird way I loved it even when I hated it. Learning in a separate room at my own pace, being able to daydream without interruption, even laying in the hospital with the gentle hum of medical equipment was a strange joy. Don’t paint me as a recluse. I enjoy people and have had amazing conversations, and I’m starting to slowly step away from my shyness thanks to art. My artwork has developed its own voice that speaks up when my voice fails. My artwork gives me courage when my fears and anxieties force me to a halt. My artwork has been the one thing to ease me out of isolation and boredom.

Although my body has been stagnant from birth and I fear the roots keep growing deeper into the home ground I know my art will not face the same fate. I’ve never shied away from trying something new even if I was going to fail at it. No matter what the media may be: printmaking, sculpture, digital, painting, even cross-stitching have not halted my artistic wanderlust. So on that note I will share with you a recent goal I’m setting for myself to improve my work even further. I’ve been reading that it takes someone either 10 years or 10,000 hours to master a skill, so that’s what I’m going to do as of February 2011. I’ve figured out that I’ve already completed roughly 4041 hours worth of hard dedication towards my art. So here is my prediction: I’ve been averaging around 5 hours a day (minus one day a week for rest) so....I should reach my goal in 4-5 years! After I reach this milestone I will reset the clock for another 10,000 hours. Right now my professional endeavors have been a sprinkling of commissions, a pinch of selling artwork, and a cherry topping of a few medical illustrations for a local doctor. They don’t fill me up but they do tide me over a bit. But I’m a glutton so I always want more. What I would truly love is to have a career with variety. To be able to work on many different projects throughout my life would be ideal. Feel free to come on in and chat with me. I will leave the door open…

I do not show something perfect when it comes to art but something lost, sad, mystery and miserable is what I think is more interesting to explore. Thorough this belief, textures is the most important element for me to execute my point of view and feeling. I enhance

I am an art lecturer and freelance illustrator from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I focus on book Illustration, poster Illustration and comic Illustration and years ago I took up Environment concept artist to make a living. In college I’m lecturer for Foundation courses of Figure studies and Still life drawing, tutor for Illustrations major subjects and preproduction concept art class. Since I was a kid I am strongly inspired by illustration of characters such as Batman, superman and other hero based cartoon mainly from western. I draw a lot of stuff in the past 15 years before get in touch with formal art training such as fan art of Batman, Chinese fiction story, ‘Journey to the West’. From exposure and compilation of all artwork, it has raises my portfolio, thus helped me in gaining scholarship to study in my first formal art training college at The One Academy when I was 18. From there, the training gradually helped me gained confidence. Since my family could not afford to send me to an art college for further study, I am truly glad to be bestowing upon an opportunity to further my studies at The One Academy. Besides that, my mom gave me the best support to become an artist as most parents might not wish their children to become an artist (in my country).

My inspiration comes from human emotion, love and elements of mother nature’s, cloud, surface of water, fungus therefore I always see things in textures and shape. My family especially my mum make me feel loved, my girlfriend make me feel touch and my mentors that share with me about arts and life, all these loves play a important element for my creation and passion. Art is life time project; art makes me feel complete in life and soul. I need to continue believing, breathing and growing and I wish my belief can bring something to the others. Sincerity and passion makes things change. We create art from what we feel it is and hope it can brings something to viewer. However, we don’t create art to satisfied request or to gain people’s smile as it is so insincere and unreal. Other than art, I love walking alone on the street and thinking of picture in mind or either watching people…. looking at the sky, cloud, evening mood, and drop shadow. Yea I love coffee and skateboarding, music. There are some artist that inspires me such as Android Jones and Michelangelo but there is only one who truly make me feel touch, and he is one of my mentor Kinsun loh.

Nature allowing

“I’ve always pictured myself a part of a team in the Oscars nominated for something in graphics that’s my dream...”

M

y name is Omar Riad Malkosh, and I’m a 21 years old student living in Jordan; I work at 9b studios mainly in 3D development. I study visual art and hope to one day become a great Fine Artist representing struggling Circassian Jordanian artists.

Let’s start shall we?

This all began when I was thirteen; when my cousin introduced me to digital art. I was already a big fan and long time learner of drawing and art in general. In the past I’ve worked on modeling separately, then on cartoon background production; story boarding and rendering. After that came extreme detailing or what you can

call “Photo Realism” so I have a good background from simple cartoon styles to extreme details and realism. By that time I got into Art School at the university of Jordan and got introduced to painting, composition and human anatomy.

Outchy!

One of the most important factors of stepping up your game in the industry is pushing yourself out of your comfort zone; reading and trying different techniques styles and sometimes mixing digital with traditional art, aiming for wider horizons for creativity to flourish. The Problems that usually occur and stands in the way of a work of art are immense and require lots of patience and hard work. Sometimes its taking hours and hours on fine details, and sometimes its all about simplicity which is key to play the part.

Black Out

Road block! Every now and then I get into sleep mode, and don’t do much work for a while; then it hits back suddenly with overflowing brainstorming and ideas out of the blue that would keep you up all night thinking and working on them, so its like you’re up on stairs; you stop then jump into the next level, except when you jump I feel I jump higher than before.

51

Let’s Do this!

Since I had this all planned in my mind, I can say I’m in that mode now, waiting for the train to take me to the next station, after all my goal is to get satisfaction with every shot I take and that is the fuel that keeps me running in hard times. Well with Music heh...

High hopes

I’ve always imagined my self winning a academy award with a visual effect team along side my mentor Yazan Malkosh. I have to mention artists like Salvador Dali, Amer Kokh owner of Crazy Piranha, Goro Fujita & Manek Denko. “We aim above the mark to hit the mark” Ralph Waldo Emerson used to say, and again I believe creativity is the weapon of mass invention.

t all started with a Polaroid camera. I was four years old. I would merrily run around the house and out into the garden, taking pictures of my world, the world as I saw it. These pictures were everywhere around our family home: candid pictures; pictures often unwittingly spilling with emotion; pictures sometimes beautiful with artistic blur and a little left of centre; pictures of my pet bunny rabbit; pictures of ribbon-tailed kites dancing in flight; pictures of my father’s hands – overworked yet yielding; pictures of my brother’s guitar; pictures of flowers and goldfish; pictures of puddles and poodles; and pictures of the pretty blonde boy who lived across the street. My mother used to have to prise the Polaroid camera from my tiny fingers after I’d fallen asleep... And the passion has never deserted me. Thirty summers have risen and fallen, and I still look at the world around me through a viewfinder. I still see things differently, from most.

dream...

I still see beauty in the mundane. I still look at beautiful faces and see how I would like to present them. Thirty summers later and I still hunger for the shadows and chase the light. I live for the light, that perfect light; that perfect face; that perfect moment, to capture that emotion and immortalize that emotion. Perfect light cannot be switched on. Emotion cannot be switched on. Perfect light is found at 4am amid the neon rivers on the rain-stained streets of Manhattan. Perfect light is found beneath the watery winter sunshine in a Scottish forest on a crisp December morning. Perfect light is that sharp blade of light breaking through bedroom curtains, like a headrush, the morning after the party. Perfect light is the rainbow found on the floor as light is refracted through an abandoned glass of water on the window sill mid-July. I am an artist and a cannibal. I am constantly devouring everything around me… every face, every location, every dream. Thirsty for new

light, new faces and new surroundings. I do not like harsh, artificial light and the confines of a studio. To me, these aspects of photography do not inspire, or stir creativity. To me, they kill it. Give me the outdoors, the unpredictability of natural light. Give me unpredictable weather. I am from Scotland, unpredictable weather is wonderfully predictable. I live for those moments because that’s where the real magic happens… like the unexpected thunderstorm or otherworldly cameo appearance of a rainbow during a fashion shoot. I live for these moments. They shape and inspire me. I feed off that. I feel alive. The essence of emotion can only be captured with patience. I wait, and I watch. I wait for that

magical moment when the subject seems lost within themselves; lost in a wave of nostalgia or the rhythm they walk to. I wait until it is almost tangible, visceral, then I shoot. When I shoot I become someone else. The passion, the addiction to beauty takes a hold of me, possesses me, and I shoot. I shoot until that moment passes – that perfect moment, that perfect feeling is immortalized – and a new one begins. Inspiration comes from the world around me. Inspiration comes from within. Within the surreality, hysteria and beauty in my imaginarium: a strange and wonderful pastiche of excerpts of my dreams and flashbacks of memories, passages of books I have read, torn pages of vintage Italian Vogue I have

“When I shoot I become someone else. The passion, the addiction to beauty takes a hold of me, possesses me, and I shoot. “ avidly collected, scenes from the films I have seen, memories of places I have travelled to, and flitting thoughts of places I have yet to visit; a world where anything and everything is possible. The genius of Hedi Slimane, Helmut Newton, Annie Liebowitz, Anton Corbjin, David Bailey, Cecil Beaton and Bob Carlos Clarke have all inspired me and shaped me. Moving images from Polanksi, Vadim, Fellini, Bertolucci, Warhol, Fassbinder and nouvelle vague cinema are also a huge inspiration to me. Every day I am inspired. Every day I dream. Little by little, day by day, I turn my big dreams into little realities. I constantly set myself projects: projects to refresh my portfolio

and keep it dynamic and pulsating. One such undertaking is my ‘365 Day Polaroid Portrait Project’ which constitutes taking one selfportrait every day. Many others have done this before me, but I have a twist. These images are taken (and edited) solely using the iconic iPhone 4 and using a plethora of photo editing apps that can be downloaded from the iApple Store. Upon completion of this quest of self-discovery I will publish all 365 images in a mini-book which will be available to buy from my website. My latest book project is entitled ‘A Different Take’ and it is a celebration of the diversity of people. As each page turns, a new face appears. People: some I know, some I don’t. Each person will then be asked to describe

themselves in 4 words. This will be the title of their portrait. Again, this book will be available to buy from my website. The book launch will be heralded by an exhibit of a choice selection of portraits. This project is still in its infancy, it only began on 1st March 2011. This innate addiction to beautiful imagery that courses through my veins, bleeds into other aspects of my life, by way of music and written word. Not only do I paint with light, I also paint pictures with words and song. I grew up in a house full of music and love. A house furnished with books: books that I regarded as my friends. That circle of friends amassed and my hunger for written imagery remains urgent and steadfast. A house blessed with music: an old piano, guitars and violins. A house teeming with art: a house fragrant with linseed oil. To grow up in this creative

and nurturing environment, full of love and an undying appreciation of art, music and beauty was a blessing. As a child, having access to Leica, Pentax and Bromica cameras was something I never took for granted. They were my soulmates and I treated them with respect. Memories of the smell of bromide in a wardrobe, light sealed out by way of masking tape, serving as a makeshift darkroom with my brothers (also photographers) was fun and remain imprinted as some of my happiest memories. Memories of a warm, nurturing and creative home: memories of devouring coffee-table books and technical manuals; memories of drawers full of reels of film – reel upon reel of trial and error and self-directed learning. This is who I am, and what has shaped and inspired me to create the pictures I make today.

“I am self-taught artist. However, I am very glad because friends gave me wonderful environment.”

Hello! My name is Tomoki Hayasaka. I am New Artist. I am making art since July, 2009. I am self-taught artist. I make surreal and concept art. My art grew up by the information in the internet. I thank the friends who got to know on the Internet. My art is growing up now! I was born and raised in the area which is art depopulation in Japan. I was interested in art, but I didn’t have deep knowledge. I was studying law in school. Art was not my hobby. My hobby was music and fashion. I liked clothes of Jean- Paul GAULTIER. I think his work is art perfectly.

Tomoki Hayasaka | Surreal, Digital Art

In 2009, I looked at the picture of Zdzisław Beksinski and Odilon Redon by internet. I was surprised and was impressed…! Something in my heart was activated! And I have begun to see works of various famous surreal artists… I liked surreal works of Magritte and Giorgio de Chirico very much. And, I began to get interested about making art. I bought “Wacom pen tablet Bamboo” and “Corel Painter 11” in July, 2009. This pen tablet is not expensive, but I still use it and love it. It is one of the important elements of my work to have bought Corel Painter 11. Photoshop is a main tool in now for me. However, there is a wonderful analog taste in Corel Painter 11. I registered with deviantART and have begun to show works. There are many wonderful artists in deviantART. I got a lot of the nourishment of art. I thank friends of deviantART very much. And, I succeeded in joining the wonderful

group of deviantART. The group name is thesurreal-arts (http://the-surreal-arts.deviantart. com/). I learned various things by this group. I love this group very much! I received invitation mail from abnormals.org (http://www.abnormals.org/home.php) by admin and I participated in this. This was very lucky. Many wonderful artists are in this community. I learned various things also here. I thank Natalia who invited me. I am self-taught artist. However, I am very glad because friends gave me wonderful environment. I am still weak but not lonely. I would like to return their kindness by making good works from now on. Now, the artists in the world can be comfortably connected by the Internet. It is really wonderful. The world is very large and near. I understood how to make prints and send to foreign countries by group exhibition in U.S.A.

www.innovatedmagazine.com

63

It was hard for me. But, it became study for me. I can make use of this experience in the future. Yes, I can participate in foreign exhibition from now on, without worrying about methods. I got Daily Deviation award in deviantART recently. My art was born by deviantART. And, my art grew up by deviantART. I think that this community is a mother of my art. So, it is really great honor. Unfortunately, deviantART is minor in Japan. Many Japanese aren’t good at English. So, I manage the site where I wrote

64

usage of deviantART for Japanese. I would like to be good for the person. And, I would like to spread the world of wonderful deviantART. My art has Dark atmosphere, however, my art’s concept is Core of the humanity. Love, vitality to the future, motherhood…There is various cultures in the world. Although, Core of humanity is common in human beings. I wouldn’t like to make the art which is just horror/dark. I would like to make not the art of only appearance but deep arts. It is difficult

Tomoki Hayasaka | Surreal, Digital Art

to tell a concept only with a work. I would like to establish this style. It is one of goal for me. I would like to convey quiet powerful feelings. My works is digital art Photo-manipulation. However, I am thinking the analog element as important. Not the simple cut & paste of the photograph. If it is necessary, I draw/paint a picture in analog, and I set it to one of the elements. I also make 3D work. I am making Photo-manipulation as a digital total Art. I believe that this is the right way for me. I would like to get over analog and digital wall. I begin to be interested in Doll / Sculpture recently. The Ball Jointed Doll is attractive in particular. I do not know whether I make these. There are many doll artists in Japan. Their doll is very delicate and beautiful. This is lucky for me. Probably, these will influence on my work. If there is a chance, I would like to make music CD artwork, book/magazine artwork etc. And I would like to do collaboration with various people. I would like to study various things! I listen to music for inspiration. The genre is various…classic, pop, rock, jazz, progressive, metal, techno…I listen progressive and metal well recently in that. My favorite metal band is “Pain of Salvation” and “Paradise Lost”. I like their CD cover artworks very much. And, I also receive inspiration from the various information on the internet…friend’s work, old famous artist’s work, words, and poetry. I am lucky because I was born in the age of the Internet. I was pessimistic about a life… Japanese society is very exclusive. My heart was very painful. But now, my heart is opened by meeting with art. It is hard to express it by the words. I continue making art from now on to spread this feeling. And I would like to be thankful also to the family who brought me up. My art history has just started. Please see my growth from now on! Please feel free to contact me. Exhibition, Group Exhibition, Collaboration, Project, and Business contact are very welcome. I am looking forward to encounter with new friend and you! And, I’m thankful for the Innovated Magazine who gave me this place. I am really honored. Thank you very much!!
