Patient Encounters 2018-2022
A strength of the Inova Ewing FACT department is our deep expertise in pediatric sexual assault examinations and year over year, since 2020, we are caring for significantly more, younger patients. In 2022, we saw a 17% increase in patient encounters over 2021 totals, with pediatric encounters up 24%. While patients over age 18 decreased from 2021, the number of patients under 18 increased by nearly 30%.
Our increased volumes are, in part, due to greater access to patients following the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. With children out of school most of 2020 and 2021, away from the influence of mandated reporters, e.g. school nurses and counseling personnel, reported cases of child abuse were down nationally and locally.
Of patients across our four locations in Fairfax, Dunn Loring, Alexandria and Leesburg:
9 out 10 are female
7 out of 10 are people who are Black, Indigenous, and people of color
4 out of 10 are under the age of 21
1 out of 4 are under the age of 12
Inova’s ability to deliver essential forensic assessment services to our community depends heavily on government grants, reimbursements and philanthropic support. The opening of two new locations since 2020 in Dunn Loring and Alexandria, has enabled us to serve more patients, closer to home, but also stretches our team’s capacity, as does the growing need for sensitive and expert pediatric care.
In 2022, support for FACT services from government funding was significantly reduced, shifting more of the cost burden of staffing to our generous donors. We are grateful for the sustaining annual support from the Ewing Family Foundation that ensures current staffing levels and helps Inova to deliver world-class patient care across Northern Virginia.
