Tip Jar: Evaluating your boss The purpose of formally evaluating someone is to recognize that person’s strengths and identify areas for improvement. When it’s your boss, however, it can be uncomfortable to point out anything negative. Before you fill out any evaluations, find out from human resources how the information will be used and shared. If the documentation will be forwarded to your supervisor’s boss and your name will be attached, use discretion. Instead, talk to your boss directly in a private meeting. If you’re not required to formally do it, evaluate your boss yearly for yourself. If you consistently give your boss low ratings, you may be working in the wrong position or company.

Historic district tour guides lead groups and individuals on foot, by bus or in another form of transportation through historic areas. They must be highly knowledgeable in the subject of interest, whether it is an entire neighborhood, a particular monument or a person. Some tour guides wear costumes to dress in the style of the time period and location they are covering. Because they lead groups all of all sizes and ages, tour guides must have excellent customer service skills and must be able to command attention. A background in teaching, history, theater or tour management is helpful.

Students seeking an educational route to a career in sustainability have a many major options and a growing list of colleges and universities from which to choose.
Continued from JOBS Cover: Greening of the Workplace: Prepare for a career in sustainability
The future for “green” jobs looks bright. Recent employment projections from the U.S. Department of Labor list environmental engineers and environmental engineering technicians among the fastest growing occupations between 2008 and 2018. According to the American Solar Energy Society, 8.5 million work-
ers in the renewable-energy and energy-efficiency industries are now employed in the U.S., and that number could grow to as many as 40 million by 2030. The solar energy in particular employs between 25,000 and 35,000 workers, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA). And the SEIA predicts the industry will expand to more than 110,000 jobs by 2016. To be qualified to join this bur-
geoning industry, students and professionals can follow many paths, including completing vocational training programs, obtaining degrees and certifications, and changing careers to work in the green sector. Although licensing and certifications may be required for some positions or specific job duties, there are many green jobs that can be filled without obtaining formal education requirements, such as organic
Green careers expected to grow include wind turbine and solar panel manufacturers, installers and operators.

• The early bird catches the worm when it comes to applying for jobs posted on online job boards like Monster.com. Hundreds, even thousands, of jobseekers may apply, which may overwhelm the hiring manager or HR personnel who sort through the applications. Get your application in early to ensure it is reviewed. • Check for new job postings every day or every other day. • Set a goal to send one cover letter and resume out per day o per week. • Tailor each cover letter and resume to the company and position for which you are applying. This means you’ll need to do some research on each company to familiarize yourself with its products, clients, services and history. • Use the same keywords in your application as included in the job posting. • After you apply for a job online, follow up by tapping into your online and in-person network.
