VIVACIOUS UIGNETTES
This month's VAMPI news was so big, we decided to announce it in our letter column (on page 75)! But we've got plenty of announcements concerning the other Warren magazines! Like our special super-heroes issue of EERIE! And the upcoming GOBLIN color sections! And lots more!
JEAN-PAUL SARTRE SERIES? So you think comic books can't be serious, huh? We spoke with Rich Margopoulos concerning our special EERIE HEROES issue, and he gave us the following insight into the creation of his character Hunter... specifically, his decision to give the mutant killerahelmet. In addition to the need to cover Hunter's copper-colored skin. Rich was influenced by a saying of Jean-Paul Sartre's:
EERIE We
the
get old
how fondly our readers remany super-hero series we ran in
the early 70's! But following EERIE #130, which starred the most popular characters ever to appear in the magazine, we were besieged with requests for more.. .more. .more! Plans are being made to bring back some of these heroes in team-up tales, and possibly even series of their own. But for now, the December EERIE (#137) features the origins of.. .Hunter! Exterminator One! Daridon the Mystic! Spook! Coffin! And the Mummy! We're talking Jim Starlin, Doug Moench, Esteban Marolo, Jose Ortiz, and like that! There's also a complete index to (he above-
named heroes, and other surprises! The Warren age of super-heroes is about to explode.. .trust
And if you want to know who's who and how they got that way, EERIE #137 is a must! us!
"Whenever two people's eyes meet,
one averts his gaze. The one thus dominates the other, and reduces him to the level of an object." Pretty heavy stuff, hmm? Now, if we could just Jean-Paul to try his hand at comics,..!

know the monthly
wait to find out
what the new EERIE color section will be is driving you nuts! Issue #138 features "Granny
Gutman and the Limbo Men" by Rich Margopoulus and Fred Carrillo! The Crimson Trident, Foxfire, and Talus will turn the super-hero world on its ear... if Granny doesn't cane them to death first! Slated for the following issue is "The InfiForce" by Bill DuBay and Rudy Nebres! We like both introductory episodes so much, we're going to alternate the two series in our color section—until something we like better pushes them out! (Talk about 'no room at the inn'!)

WARREN STRIKES OUT! We've got to admit. ..reading every month in the Marvel Comics fan page about their Softball team's exploits made us jealous! We wanted to write about our softball team, too! So we formed one, and challenged our publishing ri-

If you've followed the Bruce Jones, Dan HaUassey and Esteban Maroto series from its beginning, we promise: you're going to be surpriiiised! vals! As for the result. ..well, does it matter? Does it really? Isn't sportsmanship what it's all about? Let's talk instead about the way Bill DuBay hung in at third base even after the fourth ground ball off his forehead. How BUI Mohalley bravely withstood the opposition's demand that he get at least every other pitch within ten feet of home plate. How Tim Moriarty reached into his own pocket for cab fare to chase several of the fly balls hit over his head. Not to mention the heroism of Richard Hecht, Roy Arnujos, and David Allikas! So, we ask you...

sexually suggestive and explicit lingerie ads. The character of the heroine is the significant factor. Her fans care about her, and this is what spells the difference. Plaudits to Rich Margopoulos for his concept that Vompirella's romantic susceptibility constitutes a form of weakness. It is a weakness which I am sure is dear to the hearts of many of her fans. And, to Jose Gonzalez for his taste and restraint in illustrating this theme. His drawing remains unsullied by the self-conscious humor, sick violence, and emotionless "meat market" mentality than infects so much currently available material.

Swarthmore, Penn. Writers' and artists' profiles are a good possibility for our fan page, Mike. Readers can consider this an Invitation to write and tell us who they'd like to see profiled.
Timothy Morlarty certainly seems to be doing great things for the Warren mags! First the reappearance of Jose Gonzalez and Enrich, then the book insert sections in EERIE and THE GOBLIN! But there is still room for improvement. First, Rich Margopoulos color comic
should be relieved of his duties as Vampirella scripter. Secondly, I'd like to see the writers' profiles brought back.

MIKE JONES
In the 1081 Warren Awards, anin issue #108, it is stated
nounced
more than once that "reader reaction" was significant in selecting the winners. Yet the ultimate effect of discontinuing the letter columns in all the Warren mags is that fewer and fewer letters will be received. Having no lettered gives readers the impression that Warren doesn't care about their views, and few people are going to bother to write when they think that they're being ignored. Lettercols can also help sales, as they engender a spirit of community among readers and the creative staff, and also let the reader know that there really are lots of others who buy
the mags. A fan may even come up with a worthwhile suggestion every
now and then.
Certainly, "reader reaction " can be partially measured by sales figures, but this reflects on the issue as a whole, not on its separate features. Especially with anthology books like Warren publishes, it is almost impossible to tell from sales alone which features the readers enjoyed. For instance, in #108 I found the three "main" features (Vampi, Pan tha, and the Fox) to be the least enjoy-
Vampi was pedestrian and repetitive, Pan tha was only marable of the six.
ginally interesting (due to the bizarre nature of her opponents), and the Fox showed far less inventiveness
and subtlety than has been the norm in previous installments.
On
the other hand, Torpedo had
Alex Toth's striking illustration of a succinct and involving tale by Sanchez Abuli; Jeremy continued Paul GUlon's storybook-style work on this interesting genre piece; and Sweet-
water Nessie was still more of the unique work of Don McGregor aided by the unusually appropriate art of
Kansas City, Missouri
Auraleon. So bring back the lettered already!
Words can't express my delight at seeing Jose Gonzalez back on Vampirella on a regular basis. I'd rather have an 8-page Vampi story by him than a 20-pager by anyone else. JOHN E. VETTER
We didn't know what reader reac-

not been granted. We are tired of reprints. We are bored by inferior stories with no plots. I don't have to give examples, because flipping through any of the recent issues will show what I mean. The cover art is superb, and a great deal of credit and recognition should be given to Enrich. But excellent covers will not make up for the balance of the magazine. We've also been asking for more pages to the Vampi stories, but Warren has ignored us. It's a little strange when the lead story of a magazine is shorter than the rest. For example, the Vampi adventure in #108 was only eight pages long, while Sweetwater Nessie was thirteen. We realize that Jose Gonzalez is still
rendering like "A Love Blessed in Hell" is even noticed amidst the prurience and perversion that currently saturate the newsstands. If VAMPI #106 is a big seller due to the sexual content of the lead storyline and illustration then it can't be that element which is primarily responsible. Far more graphic material is available in almost every magazine, from those whioh follow the PLAYBOY format thru the LADIES'

now that the magazine has expanded to SO pages.. And we're following through! (Surprised?) You've no doubt noticed that this issue contains both a Jose Gonzalez lead story and the first entry in our "Tales of Lost Drakulon" serlesl But it's next issue that will firmly implant you in the ceiling, featuring Vampirella in "The Walker of Worlds" by Gonzalez, and in Gonzalo Mayo's 15-page "Sins of thy Fathers"! We hyperbolize so much, we're afraid you won't believe us when we tell you that "Walker of Worlds" is Gonzalez' greatest work In years. ..but 'tis true! Tis true! And the tale's title character is sure to become a mainstay of the Warren world! The same issue (#1 1 1) features the Fox, Torpedo, Jeremy, and other surprises! It's the greatest bargain under the twin suns, and be all yours on November 16!
