SPD-SL is the road-specific adaptation of the SPD concept. This pedal platform is a seamless pedal-andcleat interface that provides a more efficient power transfer under extreme pedaling loads encountered in race competitions. A wide cleat design offers stability on and off the bike.

EXTRA-WIDE PEDAL PLATFORM The wide platform dramatically expands the contact point between the cleat and pedal. Top-level racers have reported that the pedal and cleat interface provides a very solid feeling when they stand on the pedals.

4 MM LONGER AXLE

Shimano offers an optional extended axle, which adds 4 mm to the distance between the crank and the foot position. This allows riders with naturally wider hips to maintain correct leg alignment on the pedals.

CLEAT SPACERS

Power transfer efficiency SPD-SL is the road-specific refinement of the system. This pedal platform was designed specifically for the needs of world-class road racers. The seamless pedal-and-cleat interface provides a more efficient power transfer under the extreme pedaling loads encountered in race competitions.

A RANGE OF CLEATS

SPD-SL pedals support three different ranges of spring tension adjustment: Standard, Light Action, and Wide. Now you can clip in and clip out with the optimal range of spring tension to suit your preference and usage situation.

Shimano offers three cleat options to meet every rider’s needs: the fixed SM-SH10, the center-floating SM-SH11, and the new front-center-pivoting SM-SH12, which provides an excellent balance of stability and freedom. All of these nylon resin cleats feature non-slip rubber tips to enable easy walking.

SHIMANO DYNALAST SHAPED MIDSOLE

Whether you’re a XC racer or a regular XC rider, you’ll gain an edge from Shimano’s new cross-country soles. Designed to meet the specific demands of off-road riding, these soles employ Shimano Dynalast technology to reduce braking loss and enhance pedaling efficiency. We optimized sole stiffness and gave the sole a lower profile so that your leg drive would transfer more directly to the pedal. Also, the spikes and blocks on the outsoles are arranged in an optimal dirt-shedding pattern to maximize performance on even the muddiest trails. The result is a dedicated XC sole that lets you unleash your power to the fullest.

Closer to the Pedal

Toe spikes can be swapped out according to the riding environment. On dry, solid rocks, use the resin type. When you need more traction --say, in muddy conditions or in loose sand or dirt --choose the metal-tipped XC spikes.

So you can transfer more power directly to the pedal, we reduced the thickness of the sole under the cleat area. The XC90 is 1.7 mm thinner than the earlier M315 model, while the XC71 and XC61 are 0.7 mm thinner than the M240 and XC60.

Sole stiffness is optimized through a layered structure that offers the ideal rigidity for cross-country riding. The SH-XC90 features a carboncomposite midsole and, in the front section, a carbon-composite insert plate.

The table shows the recommended cleats for each SPD, SPD-R, SPD-SL and Shimano Click’R pedal. Cleats listed under the table can be substituted for the recommended cleat, but with certain restrictions as listed.

Cleats wear out over time and must be replaced regularly. Replace your cleats when you find them worn and too hard or too easy to release.

When you put too much force on the pedals, your shoes may come out of the pedals unexpectedly or accidentally. (This trouble tends to occur when the spring tension is weaker.) To avoid this problem, you need to find out the optimum spring tension by practicing over and over while trying different pedaling forces and various pedaling styles.

When the adjustment bolt is turned clockwise, the spring tension increases, and when it is turned counterclockwise, the spring tension decreases.

Adjusting the spring tension of binding

If you are using SPD shoes and pedals for the first time, adjust the spring tension for attaching the pedal cleats lighter. (For further information, please consult with your local Shimano dealer.) Then, place one foot on the ground and practice engaging and releasing each shoe from its pedal until you can do so naturally and with minimal effort. Use a safe open space for the practice.

INTRODUCING SHIMANO CUSTOM-FIT TECHNOLOGY How does it work? Follow this step-by-step procedure

Molding the insole

Procedure applies to SH-R321, R260, XC90, and XC70 Shimano’s Custom-Fit models only. Caution: please only use the above mentioned devices supplied by Shimano for both molding procedures. Always wear the special gloves delivered with the molding package. Molding procedure always without shoe cleats! WARNING! The Shimano Custom-Fit insoles can be used as they are without heat molding, but any heat molding must be done by an authorized Shimano footwear dealer. If it is done incorrectly, warping of the insole or serious injury may result.

Pre-heat the oven for approximately 10 minutes. The temperature inside the oven will reach around 100°C (210°F).

Place the protective toe cap on the nose of the shoe. Prepare the shoe by removing the insole and fully opening the straps and the buckles.

HEEL

Step 3 When the oven has reached its temperature of around 100 degrees Celsius, place the shoe and the insole into the oven for 1 minute. Be sure that the toe of the shoe toward yourself.

Take the shoe and insole out of the oven. Place the insole back into shoe.

Put the shoe (now with insole in place) back into the oven for 2 more minutes. Then remove the shoe from the oven.

Step 5 Place foot into the shoe. Close the straps and buckle to the intended fit preferred by the user.

ask the customer to stand still for approximately 5 minutes with his/her full weight applied to both inner soles for their imprints. At this time, apply the weight on the front of the shoes.

FINISH After five minutes, inner soles should cool down to almost body temperature and conformed to the rider’s feet.

Step 4 Insert their feet. Place their heels into the heel-cups firmly. Close and adjust the straps to the intended fit preferred by the user.

Step 5 Enter foot in the bag with nose cap. Adjust position of hose connection to the heel of the foot. Close and seal the bag using the special ankle strap.

Step 6 Let the user stand up and apply the weight on the front of the shoes (around the thenar) equally on both sides. Switch on the vacuum pump and apply vacuum force for 2 minutes.

FINISH

After two minutes of applied vacuum pressure, remove the bag and the toe cap from the customer’s foot. but keep the shoe on until it is fully cooled down to about body temperature for another 5 minutes to set the fit.
