Welcome to Fairbanks

Once a gold rush boomtown, now called the “Golden Heart of Alaska,” visitors find Fairbanks inviting, engaging and awe-inspiring. With the midnight summer sun shining nearly 24 hours a day, Fairbanks is simply bursting with energy and things to do. Get lucky panning for gold, float the Chena River, mingle with reindeer and musk oxen, cool off in an ice museum, take a refreshing hike through the boreal forest and look for birds and wildlife or be inspired by Native art, historic sites and live performances. During the “Aurora Season” from August 21 through April 21, you have a great chance to see the shimmering light of the aurora borealis. Winter unveils a host of fascinating events and activities that includes dog mushing, viewing incredibly outdoor ice sculptures, and more. Fairbanks also features a grand, year-round calendar of events. Several local celebrations have been recipients of the American Bus Association’s (ABA) Top 100 Events in North America title—Golden Days, World Ice Art Championships, Festival of Native Arts and more. The World Eskimo Indian Olympics and Midnight Sun Festival both earned the acclaim for 2016.

Getting Here

Fairbanks is the gateway to the Interior and Far North of Alaska and is surprisingly easy to reach. Domestic and international flights connect Fairbanks to the world. The newly expanded Fairbanks International Airport is a modern, up-to-date and friendly portal into the community. Domestic Air Service: Fairbanks is served yearround with direct flights to and from Seattle by Alaska Airlines and Delta Airlines, and seasonally during the summer by Delta and United Airlines with direct flights to and from Minneapolis and Chicago. Each airline that services Fairbanks offers a variety of connecting flights that make getting to Fairbanks easy from anywhere in the US, as well as international destinations. International Air Service: Fairbanks is by far the smallest US market with non-stop flights to both Europe and Asia. German airline Condor offers onceweekly passenger service during the summer season between Fairbanks and Frankfurt. Japanese Airlines offers seasonal charter service in the winter from Narita and other airports, and China Airlines recently launched a direct winter charter flight from Taipei (Taiwan) to Fairbanks. Regional Air Service: Several regional air carriers, including Air North, Era Alaska and Warbelow’s, provide frequent air service between Fairbanks and numerous Interior Alaska rural communities, Anchorage, other Alaskans communities and Canada. Many group tour planners have also found that using the Alaska Railroad as part of their tour makes for a memorable experience. The last full-service railroad in the United States, the Alaska Railroad provides daily summer service and weekend winter service (biweekly during the month of March) between Fairbanks and Anchorage, a magnificent twelve-hour train ride. Summer service includes a stop in Denali.

Climate & Dress

Fairbanks enjoys the midnight sun in the summer months and the northern lights when the nights get darker. The Brooks Range keeps the harsh Arctic winds at bay and the Alaska Range keeps the wet, coastal weather to the south. Expect dry weather, dramatic clouds and blue skies, little wind and warm summers with temperatures up into the high 80s. Winter brings snow from mid-October through March, with temperatures averaging 8°F to –19°F.

No matter how you get here, the authentic Alaskan hospitality you will find sets Fairbanks miles ahead of the competition.

Casual, comfortable clothing and shoes are almost always acceptable. Although summer wear includes shorts, short-sleeved shirts and sandals, also plan to pack pants, long-sleeved shirts and a light jacket. Winter gear includes parkas, boots, hats, mittens and snow pants for your outdoor adventures. Many winter-based tour operators offer outdoor gear for visitors. Dressing in layers is recommended, regardless of the season, as temperatures can fluctuate throughout the day.

Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center

Make the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center your group’s first stop. Not only beautiful but informative, the Center has brochures, maps, complimentary WiFi and telephone, daily vacancy listings, and local walking and driving tours. Serving as the regional visitor facility, the friendly and knowledgeable staff have answers to all your questions. The free, 9,000 square foot exhibit hall features outstanding displays and dioramas showcasing Interior Alaska’s people, wildlife, landscapes and seasons. Enjoy free films and programs on Alaska’s natural and cultural history. The Center also has an artisans’ workshop, a planning area for outdoor trips, cultural programs and an Alaska Geographic store. The Center is home to Explore Fairbanks, Alaska Public Lands Information Center, Alaska Geographic, Denakkanaaga and Tanana Chiefs Conference Cultural Programs.

Fairbanks History

Fairbanks was founded through the misadventures of trader E.T. Barnette, who, in 1901, hired the sternwheeler Lavelle Young to take him and his trade goods to the village of Tanacross. They ran into trouble when the 150-foot sternwheeler could not ascend the Tanana River due to sandy shallows a few miles above the mouth of the Chena River. The group hoped the Chena would meet up with the Tanana but the boat again ran into shallow water and the ship’s captain left Barnette’s group and goods on the banks of the Chena River west of what is now downtown Fairbanks. Things looked bleak for Barnette until Felix Pedro struck gold about 16 miles away on July 22, 1902. Soon, the community became the new hub of the Alaskan gold rush. District Court Judge James Wickersham suggested Fairbanks as the new town’s name, in honor of Indiana Senator Charles Fairbanks. By 1908, Fairbanks was the largest, busiest city in Alaska’s territory, boasting electric lights, city sewer, fire and police protection, a courthouse and jail, a hospital, school, library and three newspapers. Fairbanks still has operating gold mines and embraces its colorful gold rush roots with attractions and funfilled events celebrating the historic quest for gold. 3

These cultures come alive through art, dancing, drumming, singing, storytelling and games of skill. Learn more about Alaska’s Native culture at the World EskimoIndian Olympics in July or dance along during the Festival of Native Arts in March. Outstanding Alaska Native artists offer a very real link to the past, as well as a bridge to the future through beadwork, ivory and bone carvings, dolls and skin sewing and birch, spruce root and grass baskets. You’ll find beautiful beaded moose hide slippers, caribou skin masks, baleen baskets, walrus ivory cribbage boards and more on display and for sale.

Arts and Entertainment

An island in a sea of trees, rivers, mountains and lakes, a thriving arts scene may be your biggest surprise when you come to Fairbanks. Stop by a First Friday event and be awed by the brilliant work of local artists, many inspired by nature’s omnipresence. Enjoy a concert or symphony featuring world-renowned performers and concertmasters. Let the music take you away in one of the dance clubs featuring everything from ballroom to country to contemporary. Many poets, authors, illustrators, historians and composers call Fairbanks home and you’ll find their work proudly on display around town. Galleries and specialty stores provide venues for respected artists to offer one-of-a-kind works of art for sale to visitors and locals alike. Select that perfect gift from Alaskan photographers, watercolor painters, jewelers, potters and more.

Midnight Sun

The endless sunshine transforms life in the far north in pleasing and wondrous ways. The sun energizes people to be on-the-go at all hours. Although the sun sets, it never goes far enough below the horizon for it to get dark. As a result there are 70 straight days of sunshine from May 17 to July 27, when Fairbanks doesn’t experience darkness—just brief twilight. Favorite middle-of-the-night activities include hiking, running, golfing and even baseball—where the Alaska Goldpanners start their historic solstice game at 10:30pm—and never have to use electric lights.

Sherman Hogue/Explore Fairbanks

The Fairbanks region is home to a diverse group of Native peoples who first resided in the area many thousands of years prior to the miners and merchants of the Gold Rush. The two Alaska Native groups indigenous to the Interior and the Far North are the Athabascan Indians and the Iñupiaq Eskimos.

Aurora Borealis

There are many different ways for groups coming to Fairbanks to see the aurora. Tour companies can take visitors to an aurora-viewing cabin or lodge away from the city. If your group has its own motorcoach, you can drive to a nearby vantage point to wait for the aurora to appear.

Fairbanks is the ultimate place for viewing the aurora borealis. The city’s position under the “Auroral Oval”—a ring-shaped region around the North Pole—makes it one of the best places on the globe to see the aurora borealis. This location offers a great balance of clear nights, occurrence frequency and activity that draws people from all over the world. “Aurora Season” begins August 21 and extends through April 21. Beautiful and mysterious, the aurora ranges in color from green to red to purple, with the brightest and most common being green. Intensity varies from night to night, with the best displays happening in the late evening to the early hours of the morning. When the nights are clear and dark enough, there will be aurora visible an average of four out of five nights. If visitors stay a minimum of three nights and are actively out during the evening hours, the chances of seeing the aurora increase to more than 90%.

Recommended road-accessible sites (always check current road conditions in winter) for aurora viewing around Fairbanks include: • Chena Hot Springs • Chena Lake Recreation Area • Ester, Wickersham and Murphy Domes • Haystack Mountain • Turnouts along the Elliott, Steese and Parks Highways • Cleary Summit • Any place away from the city light Many accommodations in Fairbanks also offer an aurora wake-up call and will call your guests’ in their rooms if the lights appear. There is no guarantee, but the longer visitors stay in Fairbanks during the aurora season, the better their chances of seeing this incredible phenomenon.

Aurora Borealis Lodge

The Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks provides local aurora forecasts as well as educational information on the aurora on their website at www.gi.alaska.edu/AuroraForecast.

• Arctic Circle trips are increasingly popular. Several tour companies in the Fairbanks area offer excursions north up the Dalton Highway and beyond. If you would like to include an Arctic Circle program in your tour but don’t have a full day, consider a flightseeing trip to one of the remote rural villages north of the Arctic Circle. • A whitewater raft experience near Denali can be a great way to spice up a trip with thrills and there are outfitters to help you make this exciting float down the river a reality. • Hot springs in Interior Alaska are an ideal place for your group to overnight, dine and soak. Particularly during the late summer when the nights are dark, the hot springs are a relaxing place to view the northern lights. • A nature walk through the boreal forest is a good way to get acquainted with the unique environment in this land of contrasts. • Flightseeing to Denali is another outstanding adventure opportunity. A number of regional carriers offer flightseeing trips to and around North America’s tallest mountain. Some include glacier landings while others fly in pressurized airplanes which allow your clients to circle the 20,310 feet (6,190 meter) peak. If you’re lucky, you may even see climbers on the mountain! • A wilderness tour of Denali National Park and Preserve is one of several types of activities available in the Denali area. The park covers six-million acres of pure wilderness and is famous for its bear population as well as moose, caribou, fox, Dall sheep and a variety of birds and other creatures. • Prudhoe Bay and the Arctic Coast await at the end of the Dalton Highway to the north. Several tour companies in Fairbanks offer extended multi-day tours up this road with stops at the Yukon River (the third longest river in North America), the Arctic Circle, Alaskan homesteads, the Brooks Mountain Range and the oil drilling and extraction facilities at Prudhoe Bay on the north coast of Alaska. • Float trip opportunities abound in and around Fairbanks and a variety of experienced outfitters can arrange part-day to multi-day float trips for groups. No experience is necessary and individual guides will make arrangements that are appropriate for your group. • Alaska Native culture tours in Barrow, Fort Yukon, Anaktuvuk Pass and other rural Athabascan and Eskimo villages are a great way to get off the beaten path and discover Alaskan living in person. These trips can range from an afternoon to several days, depending on the destination and interests of the clients. 7

Winter Tour Building Blocks

• Skiing and snow shoeing is easy in Fairbanks with countless cross-country ski trails that range from lighted and groomed to backcountry tracks, as well as local downhill ski areas. Fairbanks’ snow season is the longest and most reliable in the United States and the winter hospitality unmatched. • Hot springs are really the very best in winter when you can sit outside and look at the stars and the northern lights. Steam rises off the water and you’re toasty warm in the hot pools. The hot springs resort offers a variety of other recreational activities, as well as dining and lodging throughout the winter. • Enjoy museums, shopping, dining, arts and cultural activities. Winter is by no means down-time for Interior Alaskans—Fairbanks remains open all year round! Winter is the perfect time to take advantage of lower prices and fewer crowds. • Visit the city of North Pole, where the spirit of Christmas lives year-round. In December, the city celebrates Christmas in Ice, featuring holidaythemed ice sculptures and family-friendly activities.

• Ice sculptures are a popular reason people come to visit Fairbanks in winter. The ice sculpting season culminates in an impressive late-February through March festival called the World Ice Art Championships, where over 60 of the world’s best ice sculptors gather to compete in a variety of classes and skill levels.

• Sled dog races are one of Fairbanks’ biggest sporting attractions. See the start or finish of the famous 1,000-mile (1,600 km) Yukon Quest in February or the Open North American Championship in March. If your clients want to try a dog sled ride themselves, several kennels in the area offer rides that range from 30 minutes to several days.

The Fairbanks region is filled with outstanding things for groups to see and do. Let your clients enjoy the great outdoors by taking a dip in a hot spring or going on a nature walk. Let them learn something new at a world-class museum. Visiting one-of-a-kind gift shops will give them the opportunity to take home a souvenir or artwork made in Alaska. If it’s something a little more adventurous you are after, arrange for your group to float down a river, cross the Arctic Circle or take a drive to Denali National Park. Whatever you choose to put on the itinerary, Fairbanks is sure to please.

Fairbanks—The Core of Alaska’s Arctic

This location affords Fairbanks the most advantageous position to access, research, promote and support the Arctic. Fairbanks has long had a symbiotic relationship with the Arctic region. Local businesses provide transportation and innovative services to Arctic neighbors. The University of Alaska Fairbanks is devoted to a wide variety of Arctic studies. The regional military

bases recognize the strategic location and singular environment the area provides. Groups can easily take an extraordinary tour north above the Arctic Circle by road or plane. These elements come together in Fairbanks to create a local core on the cutting edge of all things integral to the Arctic. After an unforgettable journey above the Arctic Circle, travelers can pick-up an official Arctic Circle Certificate at the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center in downtown Fairbanks.

© Michael DeYoung/State of Alaska

Fairbanks is the farthest north city in Alaska and in the United States accessible by air, road and rail. The Arctic Circle is located just 140 air miles or 195 road miles to the north and is the latitude where the sun doesn’t set at summer solstice (June 20 or 21) and doesn’t rise at winter solstice (December 21 or 22).
