Books

We are a l so r e a di ng...

Spinning & Dyeing Yarn Ashley Martineau Jacqui Small Publishing, £25 • UK terms For anyone keen to dye, spin and design their own yarns, this comprehensive guide is both inspiring and practical, with advice on choosing the right fibres, washing wool, building a drying rack, processing fibres, different methods of dyeing and a variety of spinning techniques using a drop spindle, kick wheel or spinning wheel. There’s also a chapter on turning your yarn production into a business, along with troubleshooting tips and gorgeous photography. A beautiful book for anyone who loves yarn and would like to take their passion to the next level.

Exquisite Trims in Thread Crochet Caitlin Sainio Search Press, £10.99 • UK terms

Modern Baby Crochet Stacey Trock Martingale & Co, £16.99 • US terms

➻ A new baby is often linked with the take-up of crochet as a new hobby; it’s an activity that can be picked up in spare moments and also produces beautiful garments, toys and accessories for a baby’s bedroom. Once learned, crochet comes in handy for making gifts for friends’ new babies too, and while a pair of simple bootees is always welcome, Stacey Trock’s book offers some contemporary projects to create for both new babies and their parents. The book is arranged by colour, with sections on brights, pastels and neutrals. Those who like to avoid gender stereotyping will enjoy colourful projects such as the Mondrian-inspired Afghan or the Rainbow Granny Squares afghan, while traditionalists may prefer something from the pastel selection – Oakley the owl is a cute first cuddly toy, or the Pastel Petals Afghan (pictured) would make a very pretty pram blanket. From the neutral designs, the sea urchin pouffe is ideal for a new parent to put their feet up while feeding the baby, or the classic teddy bear bookends could become a favourite feature of the nursery for many years. Most of Stacey’s patterns are suitable for beginners or those with a little experience. There’s a handy illustrated how-to section covering all the stitches you’ll need, with plenty of tips, charts for patterns where relevant and beautiful photos of the finished projects.

Delicate crochet trims are a wonderful way to revamp anything from a pair of socks to an old tablecloth, giving almost anything a fashionably vintage look. Caitlin Sainio’s book provides a visual “trim selector” with a tempting array of options, from a simple chain edging to waves, bobbles, ruffles, leaves, vines, diamonds, scallops and unusual choices such as dolphins and rainbows. Each design includes a written pattern, instructions, charts and a photo of the finished trim.

The New Crochet Marion Madel Potter Crafts, £12.99 • US terms French designer Marion Madel attempts to demystify techniques that look complicated to show how easy it is to make fresh, fashionable crochet garments. The aim is to progress through 25 “lessons” that enable you to build on each skill to create increasingly more complex projects. This is a great book for anyone who would like a structured approach to learning new crochet techniques but who would also prefer to practise with simple, stylish accessories. www.insidecrochet.co.uk 11
