Motoring review
April
Still one of the best superminis ever
V
olkswagen didn’t take any chances with this all-new, sixth-generation model. The result is a car that is bigger, roomier and more advanced than ever before, all the while adhering to the long-standing Polo benchmarks of quality and safety and establishing itself as one of the top three superminis alongside the Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa.
Comfort 10/10
It’s easy to forget just how simple the Polo is to drive, with the obvious factor that its relatively small size means it’s easy to park or manoeuvre down narrow lanes. You also get good visibility front and rear, although specifying parking sensors is recommended. Engine-wise, the 64bhp 1.0-litre petrol unit is adequate provided you are prepared to drive it fairly hard once out of town, but it may be worth spending extra to get the turbocharged 95bhp 1.0-litre petrol unit instead, which has more mid-range flexibility and the same easy to use fivespeed manual gearbox.
Fun to drive 7/10
Easy to drive 9/10
While you do feel bumps in the road, the suspension quietly and efficiently takes out the sting, yet it isn’t so soft that the body pitches and sways. As you’d expect in a VW, the seats are comfortable, there’s lots of adjustment in the driving position and the petrol engines are quiet unless you rev them hard. What really impresses about the latest Polo though is how quiet and stable it is at motorway speeds, lending it the feel of a much bigger car. For outright thrills you’ll be wanting the flagship Polo GTI with its 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, but the cheaper 113bhp version of the 1.0-litre engine isn’t a bad substitute. It’s the same engine that you’ll find in the smaller Up GTI - enough to propel the Polo from 0-62mph in 9.5 seconds, helped by its six-speed manual gearbox. Just be aware that although perfectly competent and equipped with some very good engines the Polo is still not as agile or as communicative as a Ford Fiesta or Seat Ibiza.
Dashboard layout 9/10
While you’ll need to spend a bit extra to benefit from all of the new dashboard’s features, there are still impressive features common to all models. For example, the central air vents repositioned underneath the touchscreen rather than above it makes it easier to operate at a glance, and the little patches of soft material on the armrests, or the squidgy surface on top of the dashboard all give a real feeling of quality. The controls themselves are also simple to use, and the 8-inch touchscreen that comes on all models looks excellent and is intuitive to operate.

Reliability 7/10
Although the standard Polo’s three-year, 60,000-mile warranty can be extended, to do so costs hundreds of pounds whereas rivals from Renault, Hyundai, Toyota and Kia all come with more generous cover as standard. Is it likely to go wrong in the first place? It’s too new to be able to draw any firm conclusions, but it’s worth noting that Volkswagen finished 12th out of 25 manufacturers in the 2017 JD Power UK Vehicle Dependability survey, putting it ahead of Ford, Honda and Renault, but behind Kia, Skoda and Hyundai.
Fuel economy 8/10
If you want the most miles per gallon possible from your Polo, go for the 1.6-litre diesel, which returns 74.3mpg. As far as petrol power goes, the non-turbocharged 1.0-litre managed 58.9mpg, and its turbocharged equivalent 62.8mpg. It is also worth noting that all Polos have stop-start technology as standard, a useful feature which cuts the engine when you’re stationary in order to save fuel.
Affordability 8/10
If you’re using finance to run the car, the Polo’s excellent residual values make it much more affordable, plus VW dealers will often throw in a generous deposit contribution and incentives such as free insurance for a year. VW’s service plans also represent good value for money.
Safety 10/10
Volkswagen has thrown an awful lot of safety equipment at its sixth-generation Polo so it’s no great surprise that it emerged from Euro NCAP’s crash tests with a maximum five-star rating, its 96% score beating the Ford Fiesta and Seat Ibiza (both also five-star cars) for child occupant and pedestrian protection. In terms of active safety equipment all Polos come with a low-speed autonomous emergency braking system that warns the driver of an impending frontal impact and automatically applies the brakes if necessary. Other driver assistance systems include post-collision assist, blind-spot monitors, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control and a park assist function that automatically steers the car into parking spaces.
Verdict 9/10
The latest Volkswagen Polo might not be quite as much fun to drive as the Ford Fiesta or Seat Ibiza, but in every other area it is a seriously very impressive car. Spacious, comfortable, very well equipped and with a good range of petrol engines, this is not only by far the best Polo to date, but also one of the best superminis there has ever been.
List price: £15,930 (1.0 TSI 95PS SE)
Extras: metallic paint (£565), carpet mats (£90), parking sensors front and rear (£315).
Space 10/10
The boot capacity has grown by 25 per cent compared with its predecessor, making it one of the most useful cars in its class. The dual-height boot floor allows you to either divide the load space and create an almost flat floor when the rear seats are folded, or drop it into its lower position to create a deeper load bay. Given that this new Polo is almost the same size as the old Golf it’s not hugely surprising that there’s lots of room for passengers, plus plentiful in-car storage, including a glovebox complete with CD player, and large door bins.

Best for families
Surfing and yoga in Morocco
ired of the snow and dreaming about spring? If haven’t booked your break yet, here’s my top pick of last-minute availability to suit families and couples. Prices quoted are per person for a seven-night stay based on a family of four (two adults and two children aged under 12 years), including flights and transfers, unless otherwise stated, and are subject to availability. Note that older children may be charged the same rate as adults. Average flight times are from London, unless otherwise stated. Temperatures are average maximum.
Beachside break in Cyprus
Flight time: 4h 20m; Temperature: 21C With its long holiday season and inviting coastal stretches (main pic), this popular Mediterranean island is a good bet for a sunny beachside break in early April. Plus points for families with young children include affordable self-catering options within walking distance of sand and sea. From £908.50 per person, self-catering, based on a two-bedroom unit at Spilio Villa in Paphos, through Sunvil (020 8758 4758; sunvil.co.uk) including car hire, departing March 28.
Flight time: 3h 30m; Temperature: 19C Active families with older children are well catered for along the sandy stretches of Morocco’s southern coast where sea breezes keep temperatures pleasant and Atlantic rollers offer good surfing for all abilities. Cooler nights see the thermometer drop to around 11C. From £1,120 per person, with breakfast, at five-star Paradis Plage Resort, through Health and Fitness Travel (0203 397 8891; healthandfitnesstravel.com) including a surfing programme. Yoga classes also available (age limits apply).
Family fun in Tenerife
Flight time: 4h 15m; Temperature: 20C Largest of the Canaries, with beaches to suit all tastes and around nine hours of sunshine a day in April, this island is hard to beat for a dose of reliable warmth with children in tow. However, flights and accommodation are snapped up early so the big sun-and-sand operators are your best bet for last-minute options.

Serious sunshine in Barbados
Flight time: 8h 30m; Temperature: 30C If you like your beaches sizzling hot and your sea like an inviting bath, Easter in the Caribbean ticks the boxes. All-inclusive resorts in Goa
Escapist bliss in Mauritius
Flight time: 11h 30m; Temperature: 29C For Robinson Crusoe beaches of pristine white sand, fringed with coconut palms and lapped by turquoise waters, combined with serious heat and top-end hotel options, this Indian Ocean island is a good bet for luxurious family fun. The flight may be long, but the time difference is only four hours. From £1,149 per person, half board, based on two interconnecting rooms at five-star The Residence through Powder Byrne (020 8246 5300; powderbyrne.com).
Best for couples
Sand and spas in Mexico
Flight time: 9h 15m; Temperature: 32C Idyllic white sand beaches fringe the Mayan Riviera between Puerto Morelos in the north and Tulum in the south, with sunbeds shaded by thatched tiki sunshades under leafy palms. Resorts are largely high-end, with pampering spas, some off-limits to children aged under 18 years. From £2,078 per person, all inclusive, at five-star Excellence Riviera Cancun through Sovereign Luxury Travel (01293 832 459; sovereign.com) departing March 27.
Flight time: 9h 5m; Temperature: 33C With a coastline stretching for miles along the Arabian Sea, this western state of India is a magnet for beach-lovers. Whether you prefer a full-on party scene or a quiet, unspoilt stretch, there are around 10 hours per day to loll on the sand and soak up the gloriously hot, early April sunshine. From £1,342 per person, all-inclusive, at the Novotel Resort Dona Sylvia through TUI (0203 451 2688; TUI.co.uk) departing on March 31.
High dunes in Gran Canaria
Flight time: 4h 10m; Temperature: 21C Known for its 143-mile coastline of black lava and white sand beaches, this Canary Island has something for everyone. You can choose from vast, tiny, sandy, rocky, busy or remote beaches or head to the spectacular dunes of Maspalomas (main pic), a protected nature reserve of sand hills on the southern coast. The Lake District Wastwater
England’s deepest lake, it lies in Wasdale to the west of the Lake District National Park. The view from its south-western end was voted Britain’s Favourite View in 2007 by television viewers. The view takes in the lake with the mountains of Yewbarrow, Great Gable and Lingmell behind. It forms the basis for the National Park’s logo. Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain, lies at the top of Lingmell. The village of Wasdale Head lies at the very north eastern end of the lake and has a pub, a few houses and the tiny church of St Olaf. The road there is narrow and single-track so drive carefully. On the west coast of Cumbria, Ravenglass is the only coastal town in the National Park. There is a shingle beach and fishermen’s cottages looking out over the estuary.
Ullswater
Haverthwaite Steam Railway
24
Surrounded by stunning mountain scenery to its south, softening to the gentle hills of the north, the lake is the second largest in England at seven and a half miles long. Glenridding, at the foot of Ullswater is a popular starting point for walkers and climbers going up Helvellyn. England’s third highest mountain (pictured above) includes Striding and Swirral Edges. Steamers run from here, and in summer you can hire rowing boats and bicycles in the summer from St Patricks Boat Landing. Kirkstone Pass, the Lake District’s highest pass runs between Windermere and Ullswater. The road from Ambleside to the top is called The Struggle for good reason!

E
ngland’s largest National Park is a gem of a place to visit. There are breathtaking lakes, soaring mountains - known locally as ‘fells’, picturesque valleys and even sandy coastline.
Each lake and valley has a distinct character of its own and there are many attractions and places to visit in the Lake District, covering a wide area which is just waiting for you to explore! Here are some of the highlights...
Windermere Sunset at Ravenglass Beach
Derwentwater
Keswick’s local lake is only a ten minute walk from the centre of town. To its west rise the fells of Cat Bells, and at its southern foot is the entrance to the beautiful Borrowdale Valley. You can walk the eight miles around the lake, or take a 50 minute round the lake cruise on Keswick Launch. The town of Keswick is packed with outdoor equipment shops and boutiques. It’s a short walk to the Theatre by the Lake and the banks of Derwentwater, just south of the town. Northwest of Keswick, Bassenthwaite Lake is the only official Lake in the Lake District! The area is designated as a National Nature Reserve.
At ten and a half miles long and 219 feet deep, Windermere is England’s largest lake. Arguably the most famous and popular area in the whole of the Lake District, there are a range of activities, attractions, places of interest and things to do around the lake, and on it! A mile inland from Windermere, Ambleside is a bustling town of outdoor equipment shops, bookshops, gift shops, cafes and restaurants and a cinema. Nestled in the valley between various fells, it’s the start and end point for many walks. At Bowness, you can shop, eat, get an ice cream and watch the bustle of the steamers arriving and departing from Bowness Bay. You can also hire rowing boats. Right at the southern foot of Windermere you can find the Lakes Aquarium, one end of the Haverthwaite Steam Railway or take a launch north.
Coniston Water
Coniston Water is about five miles long and half a mile wide. Above its western shore, the mountain of the Old Man of Coniston towers above the lake and the village. From the village you can hire boats and bikes at Coniston Boating Centre (pictured left). There are shops, pubs and places to eat in the village. Nearby is the pretty village of Hawkshead. Its cobbled lanes are best explored by foot, and it boasts many pubs, shops and cafes. You can see Wordsworth’s schoolboy signature carved in a desk at Hawkshead Grammar School and visit the Beatrix Potter Gallery. For more details, visit:

WIN WILKO JOHNSON 2 tickets to see
with special guests HUGH CORNWELL (band), MIKE SWEENEY & THE SALFORD JETS & MOLLIE MARRIOTT
Manchester Academy 1 - Saturday May 12, 2018 ‘I’m supposed to be dead!’ said Wilko Johnson in a recent interview, having been diagnosed in late 2012 with terminal pancreatic cancer. But despite the doctors’ worst predictions he continued to perform and present himself with vigour and a new zest for life. In 2013, Wilko announced that, thanks to a second opinion and subsequent life-saving surgery, he was cancer-free. Known for his incredible distinctive chopping guitar style, Wilko has gone on to find further success recently after teaming up with Roger Daltrey on 2014’s Going Back Home. An album of the year it featured reworkings of songs from Wilko’s Dr Feelgood days such as ‘All Through The City’ and ‘Going Back Home’. The Wilko Johnson Band was formed with exBlockhead Norman Watt-Roy on bass and Dylan Howe on drums, adding up to one of the most exciting R’n’B bands in the world today.
Hugh Cornwell is one of the UK’s finest song writing
talents and accomplished live performers. This electric band performance will feature songs spanning his career from early Stranglers to the current day. As the original guitarist, singer and main songwriter in the British rock band The Stranglers, he’s enjoyed massive success with 10 hit albums and 21 Top Forty singles, etching himself into Europe and the USA’s musical psyche with classic songs, including Peaches, No More Heroes, Golden Brown, Nice N’ Sleazy, Always the Sun and Duchess.
Classic old-school post punk rockers Mike Sweeney & The Salford Jets’ single ‘Who You Looking At?’ was
a hit across the whole of Manchester in the 1980s as well as breaking the band in the national charts. The band reformed in 2003, still fronted by the mighty Mike Sweeney - vocals, guitar and former Piccadilly Radio DJ (now broadcasting on BBC Radio Manchester).
Having supported and backed some of the best rock stars in the industry including Robert Plant, The Faces, Mark Knopfler and Paul Weller, Mollie Marriott (daughter of the Legendary Small Faces front man Steve Marriott) is set to take the industry by storm with her debut album Truth Is A Wolf later this year. Slow cooked Greek lamb
Take your time making this easy one-pot lamb dish for an informal centrepiece meal. You can slow-cook it two days ahead and serve it with Greek meze dishes
Ingredients
Shoulder of lamb, about 2kg | 1 garlic bulb, cloves separated but the skin left on | About 30g anchovies | 2 tbsp olive oil | 10 tomatoes, left whole | 6 carrots, peeled but left whole | Handful fresh sage | Handful fresh rosemary | Handful fresh thyme | Tzatziki, chickpea salad and flatbreads, to serve
Method
1. Heat oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 3 and sit on a shelf as
low as possible. Pierce the lamb all over with a small knife, then fill each slit with a garlic clove and half an anchovy fillet. Rub all over with the oil, then season. 2. Heat a flameproof casserole dish and sear the lamb all over until well browned. Take off the heat, remove the lamb from the dish and tip in the tomatoes, carrots, sage and

rosemary. Sit the lamb on top and scatter over the thyme.
3. Cover the dish, slip it onto the bottom shelf of the oven and cook for 4-5 hrs until pull-apart tender. Carefully lift the lamb from the dish, discard the herbs and roughly squash the tomatoes into the juices. Sit the lamb back in the dish and serve in big shredded chunks with tzatziki, chickpea salad and flatbreads for mopping up the juices.

Gardening tips for
April
Sunshine and showers Spring is finally in evidence as daffodils and flowering trees start to bloom. Expect the inevitable April showers this month but with sunny days too, when you can turn your attention to the lawn. It’s an exciting month, with indoor-sown seeds well into growth, and it’s also time to start sowing outdoors. Just watch out for frosts...
Lawns
Mow lawns when necessary - whenever the grass is growing - the aim is to maintain a constant height throughout the year. Apply a high nitrogen spring lawn fertiliser at the start of the month to encourage good, strong growth. If moss is a problem choose a combined fertiliser and mosskiller. April is the best month to apply lawn weedkiller. Always follow instructions on the packaging very carefully as lawn chemicals (including fertilisers, weedkillers and mosskillers) can cause pollution of groundwater if used incorrectly. Lightly rake lawns with a spring-tine rake to remove old plant debris. This can also be done to rake out dead moss a couple of weeks after applying a chemical moss killer.
Flowers & Plants
If you’ve had poor flowering from camellias, the problem could be dry roots as the buds are forming. Give them a really good drink now and mulch well; periodically move back the mulch and give a good soaking in summer. Plant lily bulbs now in pots! If you want to get ahead with your summer lily display, start planting now! I’d always recommend planting in pots. You can simply move them around the patio or into gaps in your borders as they come into flower! Use a good, multipurpose compost and half-fill a container at least 30cm (12”) in diameter and is sufficient for 3 bulbs. Cover with more compost and water in. Once the plants begin to shoot, move them to a sunny position. Feed with a liquid plant feed each weekly from the beginning of summer. Tie in climbing and rambling roses to their supports. Honeysuckle and Clematis will now be putting on growth, tie in new stems to train the plant along its support. Check any tree ties to make sure the tie is not cutting into the trunk. Loosen any that are tight to allow the trunk room to expand. Prune your Penstemons now - cut all the old shoots back to the base provided there is new growth at the bottom of the plant. If there are no new shoots at the base, cut just above the lowest set of leaves. If you haven’t done so already, finish cutting back any dead foliage left on your perennials and ornamental grasses to make way for new growth.

Spring pond care
As the water begins to warm from the surface downwards, newts and frogs venture back and fish actively begin to search for food. This is a great time to sit quietly by the side of the pond and watch wildlife interact with the water.
Wild Birds
During the spring and summer months, birds require high protein foods, especially while they are moulting. Only feed selected foods at this time of year. Good hygiene is vital, or feeding may do more harm than good. These food include: Black sunflower seeds, pinhead oatmeal, soaked sultanas, raisins and currants, mild grated cheese, mealworms, waxworms, mixes for insectivorous birds, good seedmixtures without loose peanuts, RSPB food bars and summer seed mixture are all good foods to provide.
Pond tip
Don’t worry if the water in your pond suddenly turns from clear to greenish, it’s natural for a certain amount of algae to grow in the spring as life begins to stir after the winter. If the problem persists for more than a few weeks, consider adding more oxygenating plants to help clear the water.

April A Hint For Spring! so remembering to keep your eye-makeup to a minimal to just mascara and/or eyeliner if you are going to wear a bold lipstick in pastel colours. With all the penny pinching that’s going on these days, makeup that multitasks is a saving grace for any woman’s beauty bag so just one of the tricks of the trade that makeup artists have been using for years is to use a pastel or even a metallic eye shadow from the same palette and mix it with a little gloss to use on the lips! A side perk to using metallic shadow on your lips is when you have this amount of colour and shimmer in the lip gloss it immediately bounces off the light making the lips look fuller! Makeup artists sometimes pat lip gloss on the centre of eyelids for extra shine and texture, and quite often double lipstick as a cream blusher , just dab a small amount onto the apples of your cheeks and use your fingers to blend it high on the cheekbones for a youthful spring glow. Recommendations* MAC spring eye palettes The pastel trend has been reappearing in top fashion shows and on all cat walks for the past couple of years. Recently, it has jumped from just a popular makeup and clothing colour in floral prints as springtime approaches. Pastels are reappearing in new ways and particularly in make-up, its time to see these beautiful delicate colours with a different attitude, these colours are across the board ranging from lip gloss's to eye shadow and the same in nail colour. Here's a few tips on how to wear these colours appropriately without looking like an armature, or worse still, like an Easter egg!!!!! Most eye shadows come in palettes or cute little cases with colours that are pretty enough to paint on your walls, not only are they practical because of their size, but with one swipe of colour, only one, these bold but feminine colours are good enough to make a statement. If your daring enough to use pinks, yellows or blues in a striking fashion remember to keep your lips natural adding just a little gloss or simply plain with some balm. Wearing pastel lips alone can be tricky
