Welcome....

I find myself writing this editors section in unprecedented times not seen in my lifetime for sure. With the magazine going to the printers up to two weeks before you actually receive a copy, it’s hard to tell what actions and constraints have been implemented by the government to combat Coronavirus since writing this post. If any of the events or businesses are no longer valid due to the Coronavirus then please accept our apologies. As a business we fully understand the extremely difficult times we’re all facing and you’ll probably notice in this months issue many of our regular advertisers have had no option but to hold off from further

advertising as a possible restriction on movement begins to affect all our lives. We totally understand this and our aim is to help and support not just businesses but the community as a whole wherever we can . We sincerely hope this is all over very soon but above all else, our thoughts are with those affected by the virus, particularly those who are sick. We wish them a speedy recovery. Let’s do whatever we can to help our neighbours, friends, family and support businesses in any way we can through these difficult times.

Until next month - Reg Editor Inside Flintshire

SPRING FASHION T

HE fashion trends for spring / ssummer 2020 already have us excited for the return of warmer weather and longer days. And if the New York, London, Paris and Milan runways are anything to go off, this might just be the chicest season we’ve seen in years.

2 Victorian necklines

4 Short suits

Call it the Little Women effect but 2020 is set to be a year-long homage to the time of Jo March. High necklines on billow-sleeved blouses and prairie dresses, coupled with intricate button detailing, is the order of the day and we are so okay with it.

Meet the summer-approved alternative to your beloved oversized trouser suit: the short suit. Now, we know what you’re thinking... ‘I can’t possibly wear that’, but stick with utilitarian styles in neutral tones with oversized pockets and you can’t go wrong.

6 Boilersuits

7 Denim dresses

Boiler suits made a high fashion revival last season and, from the looks of things, they’re sticking around for another strong stint. This means that those of you who were bold enough to invest in one will get another season’s wear out of it!

The ‘70s revival is only getting stronger, with Studio 54 vibes slowly but surely taking over the runways. Not sure how to wear the look? Think Farrah Fawcettera Charlie’s Angels and swap the sky high shoes for retro Nike trainers and the denim one-piece looks just as effortless during the day.

1

Whether you religiously overhaul your wardrobe each time the weather starts to turn, or just like to be across what’s going on in the fashion world, look no further for a round up of the trends designers are buzzing about right now. From the colours and prints having a ‘moment’ right now, to the ‘It’-pieces you’ll want to invest in ahead of time, here’s our seasonal round up of the nine biggest trends set to dominate spring/ summer.

Shop the trend

1 Shirt dresses Fit for the office or spontaneous trips to the seaside, the shirt dress is a summer wardrobe staple for a reason: it’s versatility personified. Opt for a classic white oversized style or, alternatively, add some zest to the look by selecting a pastel hue or print. Our recommendation? Ice-cream tones with subtle pinstripe lines in different directions is an instant winner.

5 Mixed florals Florals, spring - heard it all before? But what if we told you that this season it’s all about floral-on-floral energy? Maximalism is alive and well with this summer-loving Stella McCartney combo which is practically made for long days at the beach.

RECIPE

Easter egg brownies Loaded with chocolate eggs and chicks, this is the ultimate Easter centrepiece - an ‘eggstra’ special treat for afternoon tea or dessert

Ingredients l 185g unsalted butter, cut into small chunks, plus extra for greasing l 185g best dark chocolate, broken into pieces l 3 large eggs l 275g golden caster sugar

3 Break the eggs into a large bowl and tip in the caster sugar. With an electric mixer on maximum speed whisk the eggs and sugar for around 5-8 mins or until they look thick and creamy and have doubled in size. 4 Pour the cooled chocolate mixture over the egg mixture, then gently fold together.

l 85g plain flour l 40g cocoa powder l 5 fondant filled eggs (we used Cadbury’s Creme eggs) l 150g mini eggs (we used a mixture of Cadbury’s and Smarties mini eggs)

To decorate l You will also need a few fluffy chenille Easter chicks to decorate (optional)

Step by step 1 Put the butter and the chocolate in a medium-sized heatproof bowl and set over a pan of simmering water, stirring occasionally until melted. Alternatively, cover the bowl loosely with cling film and microwave at 30 sec intervals until melted. Leave the melted chocolate mixture to cool to room temperature. 2 Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Grease a 20cm square tin with butter and line with 2 long strips of

folded baking paper or foil – one running top to bottom, the other left to right then line the base with a piece of baking paper. The strips will help you lift it out later.

5 Sieve the flour and cocoa into the wet ingredients then continue to fold the mixture gently with a spatula just until everything is fully combined, try not to overmix. 6 Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and carefully level the mixture with the spatula. Put in the middle of the oven and bake for 20 minutes. 7 Meanwhile, cut the fondant filled eggs in half and set aside then place the mini eggs into a pestle and mortar. Crush a few of the mini eggs but leave some whole. After 20 mins take the brownie out of the oven and press in the fondant eggs, cut side up. Scatter over half of the mini eggs too then put it back in the oven for a further 5 mins. 8 Once baked, top with the remaining mini eggs, leave to cool completely then place in the fridge for about 1hr to firm up. Lift it out of the tin using the strips of baking paper and cut into squares to serve. Decorate with little Easter chicks if you like.

Holidays

The five best destinations for a holiday in Montenegro N

O… Montenegro is not in Latin America… although its name is of Latin origin. And no, it is not near Russia, although Montenegrins have a strong Slavic accent.

decorated with petunias.

Montenegro means ”black mountain”. Its forests are dense and opaque, and if you venture deeper into them, wolves and bears can be found.

The Island Gospa od Skrpjela (Our Lady of the Rocks) is one of two gorgeous islands in the bay of Boka Kotorska, which are situated in the sea across Perast in the Kotor municipality. The other island, Sveti Djordje, is also called “the island of the dead captains”, because according to a legend a French soldier shooting a cannon towards Perast hit the house where his beloved lived and killed her.

It is a small country in the south-east of Europe, next to Croatia and opposite Italy. It’s about an hour away from Rome by plane, and less than two from Paris or Istanbul. It’s a place where, on the same day, you can go for a swim in the sea and go hiking on the snowy mountain tops. You can choose between the utmost luxury and spartan minimalism, and between an adrenaline rush or complete serenity. Here are its top five places to visit...

Kotor

Kotor is made up of contrasts - the old squares with modern cafés, the sounds of live music and the echo of footsteps down the narrow cobblestone alleys and balconies with wrought iron railings,

The old town of Kotor has many examples of medieval architecture: churches, cathedrals, palaces and museums. Its beauty is complemented by the multitude of narrow streets, squares and markets.

Perast is surely one of the strangest, and historically one of the most beautiful places in Kotor bay. Today it is often called the quietest town in Boka. Its narrow streets and numerous, mostly abandoned, renaissance and baroque palaces testify to the luxurious life led by its former inhabitants.

Budva

Once a small, quiet coastal town, today Budva is one of the loudest and busiest

towns on the Montenegrin coast during the summer. It began life two and a half millennia ago and is now home to luxurious yachts, new buildings, restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Budva has its own Hawaii – an island opposite the city with beautiful beaches and great seafood. The old town is Budva’s greatest asset. It occupies an elevated position on the island, which used to be connected to the mainland by a sandy causeway before evolving into a peninsula. Budva is one of the oldest urban centres in the Adriatic at more than 2.500 years old. The Island of Sveti Stefan is a fashionable summer resort, connected to the mainland by a sandy causeway. This form of island (called a “tombolo”) is very rare. The town itself consists of curved, narrow streets with picturesque squares and three churches The attractive Island Sveti Nikola, popularly named ‘Hawaii near Budva’, is one of the top attractions on the Budva Riviera. A translucent and clear sea will await you, as well as the blue sky, sunshine and all of the smells and tastes of the Mediterranean.

Tivat

No, this is not Monaco… all these idling super yachts in the posh marina, the high-class promenade and ritzy apartment blocks, swish restaurants and shops are in Tivat, Montenegro. Once a modest and ordinary town, Tivat went through a major renovation of its marina and surroundings and today is a place where the world’s jet-set comes to relax in the summer. Porto Montenegro is one of the most beautiful destinations in Montenegro. Primarily made for super yachts and rich billionaires, you’ll be surprised by its relatively cheap prices. The Island Sveti Marko is a mysterious green island, on which in 1962, a tourist lodge with 500 Tahiti houses was built. The Island Sveti Marko was for decades an exclusive facility owned by the French “Club Mediterranee”. Staying in Tivat you will see the complex better know as the Summer Cottage House Buca. This complex is found in the center of Tivat and it exists in complete harmony with its gothic surroundings.

rivers Piva and Tara. Here you will find 23 mountains standing over 2300m in height. The Tara River Canyon (“Tear of Europe”), is the most beautiful and cleanest river in this part of the world and will leave you breathless. Black Lake in Durmitor National Park is one of Montenegro’s main tourist attractions. More than 3km long, with a footpath around the lake, it’s a very popular destination for hiking.

Cetinje

Situated in the fields of Cetinje, at the base of the Lovcen mountain, Cetinje is a treasure of Montenegrin cultural and historical heritage. It features some spectacular architecture from the 18th and 19th century and is the capital of Montenegro and Crnogorsko. Lovcen National Park is located in a rocky region of the Dinara Alps. The high

snowy slopes are great for Nordic skiing. Other popular activities are hiking and walking. There is also a small adventure park located in Ivanova Korita. The most impressive landmark, not only of Cetinje but of Montenegro in general, is the Mausoleum of Petar II Petrovic Njegos on Lovcen mountain. It’s situated at the top of the Jezerski peak and, sitting at a height of 1,660m, it’s the highest mausoleum in the world. Cetinje monastery is one of Montenegro’s most frequently visited attractions, and it is here that you will find the remains of St.Peter. For hundreds of years it has been at the centre of Montenegrin spirituality, free thought and education. l For further details, plus information regarding flights and accomodation, go to: www.visit-montenegro.com/ destinations/

Zabljak

Zabljak is the highest city in the Balkans. located at an altitude of 1456m in the very centre of enormous mountain of Durmitor – and in the middle of Durmitor National Park. Zabljak is a good destination for winter tourism, but is still a popular summer destination. YOUR STARS Aries

(March 21 - April 19)

If you are tempted to overspend this month, try to resist the urge. This is likely to be a very social period in your calendar and you may need to watch any potential strain on your finances. You will be in great demand on the social circuit and others will seek out your company.

Taurus

(April 20 - May 20)

Gemini

(May 21 - June 20)

Cancer

(June 21 - July 22)

Your patience could well be put to the test this month. There could be a situation where you will need to forgive and forget, rather than harping on about something that has irritated you. Your emotions may be up and down but mentally you will remain strong and able to deal effectively with whatever may happen.

This could be a profitable period for those born under the sign of the twins. You will be confident enough to take risks where others wouldn’t dare. If you make investments this month, they may prove profitable in the future. If you approach your bosses about a pay rise they might actually listen to you.

Cancer charts show you may need to slow down and take more care of your health. If you are prone to skin eruptions (which many Cancerians are) your skin could be telling you to avoid junk foods and eat a more healthy diet. You may also need time to de-stress and get away from the workplace.

Leo

(July 23 - August 22)

This is likely to be a steady period for all of you Lions. You are going to experience a certain amount of fulfillment where your career is concerned and there will be much satisfaction to be gained from doing well and achieving your goals.

Virgo

(August 23 - September 22)

You will be dealing with a lot of money-related issues during this period and your horoscope predictions suggest that any financial speculations you make will be fruitful. You will not indulge in impulsive spending; rather, you will be taking a more measured and careful approach to your finances.

Libra (September 23 - October 22)

You could subject yourself to some much-needed self-scrutiny this month. If you are feeling the strain of working too hard, then take some time out. If a relationship is not working, then end it. During this time you can be as decisive as you like, as you are unlikely to make a bad decision.

Scorpio

(October 23 - November 21)

Watch out for muscle strain, muscle weakness and leg pain this month. You are likely to be physically restricted in some way. The affliction is only temporary, but it will mean that your physical development will be strong and you are likely to be very sensitive to others’ needs.

Sagittarius

(November 22 - December 21)

This period may find you needing to sort out minor issues in personal relationships. It would be beneficial to all concerned if both parties could listen to the other and act directly and quickly upon what has been said. Sagittarius folk may need to curb their idealism and learn to be more practical in their relationships.

Capricorn

(December 22 - January 19)

You may be feeling a little fragile - maybe because of work-related stress, family problems or simply because your work/life balance is out of kilter. Either way, those born under the earth sign of Capricorn could find alternative therapies very helpful.

Aquarius

(January 20 - February 18)

If you’ve been feeling a bit down in the dumps, maybe due to exhaustion, now is the time to put on a brave face and embrace all the changes going on around you. Everything has an upside and a downside. If you focus more on the positive, things will get better in the long run. Listen to a good friend’s advice.

Pisces

(February 19 - March 20)

You could feel in need of a time out this month so that you can relax and revive. If your body is tired through overwork, then allow it to rest. If your mind is racing, then allow yourself some downtime. If you feel in need of some general refreshment, take a short break from routine. It will rejuvenate you. HOUSE to Home ADE from a mixture of water, cement and sand, grout is often light coloured and porous. This makes for a fatal combination that is prone to staining.

M

In the bathroom, the biggest culprits are mould and mildew, which can leave your grout a faded black colour. In the kitchen, mould is less of a dilemma, but washing up liquid or splashes of food can still leave grouting looking grubby. When it comes to cleaning grout, always start with the mildest method first. If you are still struggling to return your grout to its original shade, try each method, progressing to the strongest.

Method For mild stains, a solution of vinegar diluted with warm water should help restore your grout to its original colour. Fill a spray bottle with half vinegar and half warm water. Spray it onto the grout and leave to stand for five minutes before giving a good scrub with a stiff brush.

Method

You should reserve using bleach for those stubborn grout stains that you can’t seem to budge. Before you set to work, make sure you have opened any windows or doors to keep the space well ventilated. There are two ways to clean with bleach. You can use it neat, pouring a small amount into a cup, or you can make a paste out of bleach and bicarbonate of soda until it resembles toothpaste consistency. Apply it to the grout and leave for 15 minutes. Take an old brush and scrub the paste away before rinsing with water or a wet cloth. Allow the grout to dry.

A scrubbing brush or old electric toothbrush Warm water

Method Sometimes all grouting needs is a good scrub. Using a scrubbing brush, or an old electric toothbrush scrub the grouting with warm water in a circular motion. You can buy special scrubbing brushes, such as the Sonic Scrubber Cleaning Tool from Lakeland. You might find a little warm water is all you need.

MOTORING The BMW i8 Roadster P

UT its questionable performance to one side for a moment, and the original BMW i8 is a modern classic. Even now, it’s one of the best-looking cars on the road, and still looks fresh and exciting – despite being based on a 21-year-old concept car. Before we drove the new open-topped i8, project leader Rainer Rump told us the original Coupe had more bark than bite; and after driving the Roadster, we can confirm the second-gen i8 has the performance to match its looks. Alongside the obvious cosmetic changes, the new i8 Roadster features tweaked suspension and weightier steering - and both sharpen up the BMW’s handling. Read our full review here for more:

What’s new in the i8 Roadster? The main change to the Roadster is the removal of the car’s roof, but the i8’s striking design doesn’t suffer for it. The roof gubbins don’t detract from the hybrid supercar’s lines, and instead improve them. You’ll still find the same, shark-like snout on this i8, the same kidney grilles and swooping rear bodywork, but the

46

addition of two flowing nacelles behind the cockpit make the i8 Roadster look as if it’s moving even when standing still. Of course, unlike an R8, NSX or even Carrera GT, there’s no meaty engine to display behind the cabin. Welcome to our electrified future.

Changes under the surface Like the previous car, the Roadster still benefits from a stiff carbonfibre shell, but BMW has also reworked the steering and suspension of the i8 Roadster – and new Coupe, also refreshed for 2020.

on the new Coupe. Inside, the changes aren’t as obvious, but the i8 Roadster benefits from a new infotainment system, so you can use the display as a touchscreen. iDrive is still here too, but now features handwriting recognition, so you can doodle addresses into the sat-nav, for example.

The way the Roadster vents excess heat from the front motor is also different. Without a roof, heat from the original car’s bonnet vent found its way into the cabin, so the new Roadster vents it under the car. The underbody is more aerodynamic to aid the new airflow, and because it’s marginally more efficient, you’ll find the same solution

Please mention Inside Flintshire Magazine when responding to advertisements

What’s it like to drive? If you’re hoping the new i8 has been transformed into a precise, Porsche 911-esque supercar, you’re going to be disappointed. However, the driving experience is significantly better this time around. The old Coupe’s slightly vague, fast steering has been replaced by a wheel that gives far more feedback than before, and BMW has changed the way the resistance comes in off-centre, too. It’s present in all modes, but most noticeable when you select the i8 Roadster Sport mode. It’s not Civic Type R heavy, but it suits the performance offered by the rest of the car.

Specifications: Price when new: £124,735 On sale in the UK: Available since Autumn 2018 Engine: 3-cylinder turbocharged 1.5-litre engine and 105kW electric motor. Total 369bhp. Petrol: 228bhp @ 5800rpm, 236 ft lbs @ 3700rpm. Electric 141hp @ 4800rpm, 184ft lbs @4800 Transmission: Petrol: 6-speed automatic, electric: 2-speed automatic Performance: 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds, top speed: 155mph (limited) Dimensions (length/width/height in mm): 4689 / 1942 / 1293mm But there is a handsome power increase on the electric side. A more powerdense battery means electrical power has risen to 141bhp, so combined power is now 369bhp. The i8 Roadster will hit 62mph in a supercar-comparable 4.6 seconds. It’s no slouch.

And what about the EVonly mode? The new i8 can run on EV power alone, but the new, bigger battery means it’ll go for longer, and at higher speeds too. EV mode is now a viable choice out of the city limits, and isn’t a tacked-on afterthought. Instead, it’s another, fully developed side to the car’s personality. Although it’s not quick as using both petrol and electric power, it does offer a totally different type of driving - and at decent speeds.

BMW i8 Roadster: the hybrid supercar, refined. The overall result increases your feeling of connection to the car, and helps you explore the limits of that rigid carbonfibre shell and uprated suspension. The brakes are more intuitive, and the change from energy regeneration to physical braking is seamless – unlike a Golf GTE, for example. Sport mode adds a rev-counter to the car’s HUD, and while it’s only a small change, it’s indictive of the i8’s sportier personality. The new i8 Roadster also benefits from an augmented engine note: BMW says

the hybrid supercar EQ’d version of its actual engine note, and as well as pumping sound through the cabin, a loudspeaker on the left underside of the car gives the public an earful, too.

But what about the power? Rump told us the i8 chassis is already at its limit when it comes to engine size, so there’s no difference between the 1.5-litre three-cylinder in the new i8 and the last. It also means if BMW does make a more powerful hybrid supercar in future, it won’t be based on the platform you see here.

If you’d still prefer to use the EV-only mode – perhaps around town - you’re going to be able to spend more time doing it; range is up to 33 miles (on the WLTP test cycle).

BMW i8 Roadster: verdict In many ways the i8 Roadster is the car BMW should’ve made in the first place. It still looks great, but under the surface small changes make it a tighter, more intuitive and more rewarding car to push than its predecessor. It’s still not as agile as a 911 or Audi R8 RWS, but neither of those let you eat miles of motorway in comfort like you can in the BMW. Is it still divisive and impossible to pigeonhole? Almost certainly, but now that’s a strength - not a weakness. It’ll certainly do until its replacement gets here in 2023 or 2024.

PETS ABBITS make wonderful indoor pets. They are adorable and brimming with personality. But before you pick one, there are a few things you should know to ensure a rabbit is right for you and your family.

R

Finances Owning a pet rabbit comes with added financial responsibility. Be prepared to spend money up front on the adoption fee, as well as housing/food/rabbit proofing supplies. In addition, be sure you’ll be able to afford ongoing costs for a rabbit on food, litter and vet bills (including spay/neuter fees).

How to take care of your rabbit safeguard your home when you let the rabbit out for supervised exercise. Rabbits are very curious and persistent creatures. They will find a way to get into your computer cables, wires, moulding, couch piping, slightly frayed rug, etc. ... and they will eat your most important documents.

Distraction Rabbits will get into trouble if they’re bored. They’ll make their own fun chewing your possessions if you don’t provide alternate forms of entertainment. A great diversion for rabbits is a cardboard castle filled with empty toilet paper rolls, old phone books and other paper products you find around the house.

Nutrition Housing Rabbits are social animals. The location of a rabbit’s housing area within your home (which can take the form of a puppy pen, a large cage, or just an area with the food, litter boxes, and cardboard castles if the rabbit has free reign) is an extremely important consideration. You’ll have to make sure the rabbit has a place to relax by himself but is not completely secluded from the family. Rabbits need social interaction, plenty of exercise and a lot of distraction.

Rabbit proofing If the rabbit will have free reign in the house/apartment/room, you will absolutely need to rabbit proof the area. Even if you keep him in a cage or puppy pen, you still will need to

52

(and in the correct amounts) is vital for a rabbit’s well-being. The staple of a rabbit’s diet is fibre. Rabbits must have access to unlimited grass hay at all times. It is very important to ensure that hay allergies will not pose a problem for anyone in the household.

It’s important to have a good understanding of a rabbit’s nutritional needs throughout his/her life. Proper nutrition

Bonding Rabbits can be quite affectionate animals, but personalities can definitely vary from individual to individual. Most rabbits don’t particularly like being held/picked up, and some are more aloof than others.

Travelling Rabbits get very stressed when travelling or when placed in unfamiliar environments, so it’s best to have a good pet sitter on hand to watch the bunny if you go on holiday. If you’re a big jet-setter, with the need or desire to move to various places around the world, rabbit ownership probably isn’t right for you.

Do your research While it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement of getting a pet rabbit, it’s important to first consider whether or not you can truly provide a good home for him.

Children and rabbits Rabbits live 10+ years. Adopting a rabbit is a long-term commitment. Rabbits are NOT low maintenance pets, so it should be a family decision. When children turn 18 and go to college or look for work, it’s important that the rabbit still has a safe, loving home.

GARDENS AWNS can become waterlogged if water sits on the surface and drains slowly. Waterlogging is more likely to be a problem on compacted and clay soils.

L

Appearance To work out whether waterlogging is an issue with a lawn, look out for the following: l The lawn is squelchy to walk on. l A sticky, glue-like layer of puddled soil may form near the surface, which is made worse by walking on the lawn. Try to keep off a waterlogged lawn where possible. l In the long term, fine lawn grasses turn yellow and die out.

The problem There are a number of causes that can lead to waterlogging. These include: l Waterlogging is caused when water sits on the soil surface and drains slowly, or fails to drain at all. Roots drown as the water excludes air from the soil. l Poor preparation of the soil before turfing or seeding of new lawns can also lead to poor drainage and waterlogging. l Waterlogging is more likely to be a problem on clay soils, or soils that are heavily compacted.

There are a number of associated problems that can appear when a lawn lies wet for short to long periods: l Damp conditions encourage algae, lichens and liverworts on lawns. This includes bubble-like Nostoc algae and dog lichen. They both flourishes in badly-drained lawns but can develop wherever the aeration is poor, and may, therefore, appear on well-drained turf if the surface has become compacted and is inclined to remain damp after rain. It is also favoured by shaded conditions

58

How to deal with a waterlogged lawn and poor soil fertility and so is frequently found on turf beneath trees. l Moss is a common sight where conditions are damp, but particularly if there is shade and a low pH (acid) l Clumps of rush may seed themselves, forming tussocks. l It is worth noting that patches of dead grass where the soil proves very difficult to re-wet can be caused by a fungal problem: dry patch.

Control

Pricking, slitting or spiking l Pricking or slitting the surface can improve a waterlogged lawn. Shallow, 2-3cm (1in), pricking or slitting will help. However, deeper spiking is better, especially with a tool designed to leave holes 10-15cm (4-6in) deep. These holes can be filled with a free-draining material, such as proprietary lawn top dressings or horticultural sand. This allows the water to flow from the surface to deeper, less compacted layers. l Hand spiking tools are available for the purpose, but an ordinary garden fork can be used. Alternatively, for larger lawns, use powered tools. Try a hollow tiner, which has hollow spikes and removes plugs of soil that are then swept up and removed. l Pricking and slitting are best carried out once the excess water has drained away, especially where machinery is to be used. In small areas where standing water persists, sweep it off the lawn and into the beds before spiking with a hand spiking tool or garden fork. l If your lawn is prone to waterlogging, spike it every few years in autumn. This will prevent the need for emergency action after wet winters.

Keep lawns healthy l Applying fertiliser in spring will help the grass to recover from winter damage and to grow more extensive root systems that are better able to withstand drought and flooding. l Feeding in autumn with a lawn feed, rich in phosphorus, promotes good root growth. l Wet soils and dead patches allow mosses to thrive in the lawn over winter. Remove these with a proprietary moss killer to allow the lawn to thrive.

Drainage l Heavy, ill-drained soils that are rich in clay do not allow water to drain away. Where there is somewhere for water to go (a ditch, drain or soakaway, for example), drainage systems can be installed. More often there is no easy way to shed excess water. In these cases, it is sometimes worth replacing the lawn with a new one, using turf laid on a 5cm (2in) bed of sharp sand, overlaid with topsoil improved by generous manuring and thorough cultivation.

IN THIS MONTH 1906: Mount Vesuvius erupts

1981: Launch of first Space Shuttle

The eruption of April 5, 1906 killed more than 100 people and ejected the most lava ever recorded from a Vesuvian eruption. Italian authorities were preparing to hold the 1908 Summer Olympics when Mount Vesuvius violently erupted, devastating the city of Naples and surrounding comunes.

STS-1 was the first orbital spaceflight of NASA’s Space Shuttle programme. The first orbiter, Columbia, launched on April 12, 1981 and returned on April 14, - 54.5 hours later - having orbited the Earth 36 times. Columbia carried a crew of two - mission commander John W. Young and pilot Robert L. Crippen.

1970

1981

Vesuvius has erupted many times and is the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred years. Today it is regarded as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because of the population of 3,000,000 people living near enough to be affected, with 600,000 in the danger zone.

1970: The Beatles break up

1982: Argentina invades the Falklands The Falklands war began on April 2, when Argentina invaded and occupied the Falkland Islands, followed by the invasion of South Georgia the next day. On April 5, the British government dispatched a naval task force to engage the Argentine Navy and Air Force before making an amphibious assault on the islands.

1906

The conflict lasted 74 days and ended with an Argentine surrender on June 14, returning the islands to British control. In total, 649 Argentine military personnel, 255 British military personnel and three Falkland Islanders died during the hostilities.

1906: San Francisco earthquake

In the early hours of April 1, 1984, Marvin Gaye was shot twice by his father following an altercation in which he’d intervened in an argument between his parents. The wounds were fatal and he was pronounced dead on arrival at the California Hospital Medical Center.

62

During the second half of the Beatles’ career, the members began to assert individual artistic agendas, with Ringo Starr and then George Harrison briefly leaving the group. Matters came to a head on April 10 1970, when Paul McCartney issued a press release that stated he was no longer working with the group, which sparked a widespread media reaction and worsened the tensions between him and his bandmates, particularly John Lennon. Legal disputes continued long after, and the dissolution was not formalised until 1974. The members occasionally reunited for collaboration, but never with all four simultaneously.

1984: Marvin Gaye shot

Gaye, a legendary soul artist who’d gained worldwide fame for his work with Motown Records, had a bitter relationship with his father, Marvin Gay Sr., since his childhood. In the days prior to his death, Gaye’s parents had arguments - mainly over a misplaced insurance policy letter. The day before his death, the arguments spread to Gaye’s bedroom. The argument began again later that night, culminating in the fatal confrontation.

It was the first American-crewed space flight since the Apollo–Soyuz Test Project in 1975. STS-1 was also the only maiden test flight of a new American spacecraft to carry a crew, though it was preceded by atmospheric testing of the orbiter and ground testing of the Space Shuttle system.

At 5:12am on Wednesday, April 18, a massive earthquake struck the coast of Northern California. With an estimated magnitude of 7.9 on the Richter Scale, high intensity shaking was felt from Eureka on the North Coast to the Salinas Valley, south of the San Francisco Bay Area.

1984

Devastating fires soon broke out in the city and lasted for several days. As a result, up to 3,000 people died, with over 80% of the city of San Francisco destroyed. The death toll remains the greatest loss of life from a natural disaster in California’s history and high in the lists of American disasters.
