Six Reasons to Visit Cyprus

1 . Clean beaches and clear sea water Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and its beaches are amazing. Crystal clear sea along with tidy and neat beaches will make you feel like you are in a paradise on Earth... add the fact that the most of the year is sunny, and you’ll get the recipe for an unforgettable experience.

The most popular beaches are those in Ayia Napa, but the most interesting is the beach in Paphos with the famous “Aphrodite’s Rock” (pictured, below). The legend says that the birth of the Greek goddess happened on this beach, or more precisely, that she rose from the sea which surrounds the rock.

2. Tasty traditional dishes

Six reasons to visit Cyprus HOUGH it’s not probably the first pick when it comes to travel destinations (due to its distance from other European countries and the fact that it is an island so you really cannot just “hop” there anytime you want), once you actually get there, you will probably ask yourself why you haven’t visited Cyprus much earlier. Beautiful beaches and delicious cuisine are just a small part of exciting stuff which Cyprus offers. We have chosen top six reasons why you should add this magical Mediterranean island to your to-visit list.

The majority of Cypriot cuisine consists of Turkish and Greek dishes. The favourite starter dish is mezedes which consists of several different smaller dishes (up to 20), mostly meat and fish dishes with vegetables. Try spicy Loukaniko sausages and various dips like Tahini (sesame dip) or Skordalia (garlic and potato dip). Their local soft cheese is called halloumi and locals like to eat it grilled. As for the desserts, Cypriots love eating pies, such as galaktoboureko or mahalepi, corn pudding malahapi covered in rose syrup.

3. Historic monuments

Cyprus is more than 10,000 years old and many monuments bear witness the cultural change over the centuries.

Nicosia, which are considered to be the best example of ideal Renaissance city.

4. It’s one of the safest countries in Europe

Cyprus is known to be among the safest countries in Europe due to its low crime rate. According to Eurostat statistics, Cyprus has the lowest number of recorded crimes, which include robberies and violent crimes. It’s a big relief to hear that Cyprus doesn’t really have to deal with these kinds of issues.

Ancient ruins at Korion, Limassol

5. Good road connections between cities

Since Cyprus is an island, one would not expect a very good road network; here, however, the opposite is the case.

The best “trip” to the past can be found in Cyprus Museum in the capital, Nicosia. The museum has an enviable collection of artefacts dating back to Neolithic and Byzantine times. Besides ancient Greek ruins like Amathus and Korion in Limassol and old Turkish mosques, there are traces of old Venetian culture such as the Venetian walls in

6. Perfect Mediterranean climate - 365 days a year

Cyprus’ climate is one of the stablest and warmest in Europe, with an average annual temperature of 24 °C. This means that Cyprus has warm winters with very few rainy days and summers which are mostly dry and hot. It should also be noted that Cyprus has an average of 3000 hours of sun per year (compared to Glasgow with a little over 1200 hours). Cyprus comes very close to having a perfect climate. There is actually no bad season to visit Cyprus. Whether you wish to go in summer or winter, you can expect good weather.

Your guide to

English Bulldog Height

Up to 15.6 inches (to shoulder)

Weight

Male and female up to 50.6lb

Lifespan

Between 12 and 15 years

History

British born and bred, the Bulldog also known as the English or British Bulldog - is a descendant of the Asiatic Mastiff. The term ‘Bulldog’ was first referenced in written form in the 1600’s, which arose from the dog’s use in bull baiting

14

– betting on whether a dog could grab a bull by the nose and wrestle it down to the ground. Over time, these dogs developed jaws and stocky bodies that typify the breed. In the late 1870s, the oldest single breed club, The Bulldog Club, was set up.

Appearance

Don’t be deceived by the Bulldog’s angry appearance as these dogs are incredibly lovable and affectionate. Their medium-sized heavy bodies are held up by short, muscly legs. Bulldogs have short, thick necks and deep, wide chests. Character-istically, these dogs have a fold of fat over their nose and loose hanging skin around their neck. They have short, flat coats in shades including fawn, white and red.

Things to watch out for

They are very sensitive to heat so extra care should be taken in the winter and summer months to ensure they are comfortable. They can easily get overheated and so do enjoy lying on a cool floor but beware, as they can die of hypothermia in very cold conditions. These dogs need to be walked every day. Bulldogs have a tendency to become overweight, which can lead to health problems such as heart disease and poor joints.

Temperament

Spontaneous, lively and clever, this breed is considerably obedient and they enjoy being faithful to their owners. Mature Bulldogs are calm but can also be playful and friendly. At times, they can be stubborn but love being with familiar people.

Is a Bulldog good for me?

If you have plenty of time to take your dog out for regular exercise, then the Bulldog could be a great choice of pet for you. Be aware that Bulldogs do have a tendency to drool and pass wind excessively, as well as snore!

Did you know?

During WWII, the Bulldog, which popularly represents Great Britain, was often likened to Winston Churchill because of his wartime defiance.

Cockapoo Height

10 - 15 inches at the shoulder

Weight

Male and female between 12 - 25lbs

Lifespan

Typically 15 - 18 years

History

The Cockapoo is a popular designer crossbreed from the US, and a relatively new breed in the UK, arriving here approximately a decade ago. This hybrid breed is the offspring of the Cocker Spaniel and Poodle; one of its ancestors, the Cocker Spaniel, originated in Britain and was bred to hunt woodcock; its other ancestor, the Poodle, is hought to be a French breed but in fact originated in Germany.

Appearance

The standard Cockapoo stands at around 15 inches tall; the Teacup Cockapoo is less than 10 inches tall; the Miniature Cockapoo between 10-14 inches. They are bright-eyed and scruffy-coated; some dogs may have the curly coat of a Poodle and others may have a Spaniel’s much straighter and longer hair. However they typically

have soft coats in tan, cream, or a mixture of white and brown (but can also be seen in red, black, and even silver).

Temperament

Cockapoos are fantastic companion dogs and are most likely to be considered a member of the family rather than a ‘guard dog’. They get along with other dogs, cats, small furries and children too. Cockapoos are fiercely loyal and intelligent; however this means they require more attention and more mental and physical stimulation than some other breeds. In terms of grooming, straighter coat types will need their coat brushing at least twice per week; for wavy/curly coat types, two to three times per week; and for tightly curled coat types, you might need to brush their coat every day to keep away tangles and mats.

disorders and ear problems, as seen in many dog breeds with soft, floppy ears of this type. The ears should be cleaned weekly, with greater attention given if problems do develop.

Is a Cockapoo good for me? If you are an outdoorsy type and are looking for an active and outgoing dog that doesn’t tend to bark, doesn’t smell and is easy to train, then you are in for a lifetime of loyal companionship!

Did you know?

A Cockapoo’s coat can change colour over time! They inherited the ‘fading gene’ from their ancestor, the Poodle.

Things to watch out for

Cockapoos are usually healthy, well-tempered dogs without many serious health problems. However, as they were bred to be companion dogs, they crave human company and can suffer from separation anxiety if left alone for too long. Cockapoos can also be prone to certain eye

Win a pair of tickets to see Dave Hemingway’s Sunbirds in Manchester

HE man who once told us he loved us from the bottom of his pencil case, founder Beautiful South member Dave Hemingway returns with his new band SUNBIRDS playing Manchester - Deaf Institute on Saturday February 5th, 2022.

Having retired from the live scene at the back end of 2016, Dave has been keeping busy together with erstwhile South colleague, guitarist/ songwriter Phil Barton, new discovery singer/violinist Laura Wilcockson and drummer Marc Parnell. ‘Cool To Be Kind’ was released in November 2020, on the independent label Nectar Records signalling the arrival of Sunbirds with new songs and a new sound. Although born and bred in England, the band’s sound predominantly features the instrumentation of traditional American roots music combined with the occasional outburst of guitar heavy melody more associated with Seattle in the late 80’s/ early 90’s. However, you can only sing about what you know. “Although a lot of the songs have an Americana feel” says Dave “they’re still about life in England. You’re going to feel a bit daft singing about pick-up trucks and low down honkytonks when you live in Yorkshire.”

Their debut album - produced by cult producer Teo Miller - captures truthful, open-hearted, funny and sometimes painfully honest songs, turning the page to a new chapter for Dave Hemingway. ‘Cool To Be Kind’ is the result of a few transitional years in Dave and Phil’s individual personal worlds. It tells tales that cover contemporary themes as well as age-old matters of the heart and soul - all viewed through the bottom of a recently drained pint glass. “Now we’re Sunbirds we’re free to dig a little deeper into ourselves”, says Phil “having said that, there’s no exact science here, we’re just enjoying ourselves and expressing whatever we want whether it’s about love, longing, depression or Gary Lineker’s crisp adverts”. Sunbirds are: Dave Hemingway - Vocals Phil Barton - Guitar Marc Parnell - Drums Laura Wilcockson - Vocals & Violin

To win the tickets, just answer the following question: “Which famous band did Dave Hemingway co-found?” Send your answer, with your contact details, to: reg@insideflintshiremagazine. co.uk. Closing date: Saturday April 24, 2021.

It’s worth how much? Six of the best car boot and attic finds

Being a bargain hunter can certainly pay off. Here we take a look at the lucky so-and-sos whose thrifty finds earned them a pretty penny or two. And not forgetting the attic gems that, despite the dust, were worth a mint.

1. Fabergé egg A savvy scrap metal dealer’s £8,000 splurge (slightly more expensive than your bog standard boot sale) at a brica-brac market was worth its weight in gold, quite literally. The extravagant Easter egg, decorated by diamonds and sapphires, was designed by Carl Fabergé in 1887 for the Russian Imperial Family and was valued at a whopping £20 million.

2. Renoir painting A bargain browser from West Virgina, bought a £5 box of junk from a flea market because she liked the look of a doll it contained. Unknown to the buyer, she’d only gone and discovered Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s “Paysage Bords De Seine” painting from 1879 in the process. Fast forward a valuation or two and she’d made a cool £50,000.

3. Mini Angel of the North At the Antiques Roadshow, a Gateshead Councillor took along a bronze model of Antony Gormley’s Angel of the North. Gormley had created this mini version, which stands at 6ft-high, to persuade the council to commission the large-scale piece that cost £800,000. So no-one was anticipating that the model would fetch a wowfactor £1 million on its own.

4. Qianlong Chinese vase The vase, which had been passed down through a Chinese family since the 1800s, was actually found to be a rare piece made for the Qianlong Emperor. It sat in a North Yorkshire home

22

for 45 years until discovered by an auctioneer valuing the contents of the property. And its worth? An enviable £1 million.

3

5. Apollo moon landing thruster A man’s youthful outer-space obsession proved to be out of this world. Having written more than 500 letters to NASA as a child about the Apollo Moon landings, the space agency sent him a REAL reaction control engine from one of the lunar modules, built in 1965. The aeronautical piece was valued between £5,000 and £6,000.

6. Feuilles Fougeres vase A £1 vase bought from a car boot sale in Dumfries was dumped in the attic after the plant it had been housing had died. The owner went along to the Antiques Roadshow with vase in-hand, but didn’t expect to be told that their boot sale bargain was actually a 1929 Feuilles Fougeres piece by the renowned French designer and major Art Nouveau icon Rene Lalique. It fetched £32,450.

How to plan a loft conversion Could you have cash in your attic? Creating a new room at the top of the house will not only add space to your home, but can also increase its value. In our three-part feature we’ll tell you everything you need to know about planning and costing your dream space.

C

ONVERTING your loft can not only provide more space, but it can also add value to your home if you decide to sell. Whilst there are many benefits, it is important that you take time to consider all factors before progressing with work.

must also pass building control inspections for it to be compliant.

What is permitted development?

First of all, you will need to check that you are able to convert your loft space. This depends on the internal height, type of roof and the space you have available downstairs for an additional staircase.

The majority of loft conversions fall under ‘permitted development’ - in other words, you don’t need planning permission to have one. This is good news, as the planning process can be a long and tricky one. However, special rules and guidelines govern conservation areas and listed buildings. If your house is listed, you will need Listed Building Consent, and if you live in a conservation area you’ll need permission for any dormers or extensions.

Is my attic space suitable for a loft conversion?

Whatever your situation, you will still need Building Regulations approval and possibly a Party Wall Agreement with your neighbours.

There are certain head height requirements you must adhere to in order for your loft conversion to be compliant. As a rule of thumb, you need 2.2m between the top of the floor joist of the loft to the bottom of the ridge beam. To make for a comfortable attic bedroom or living room, at least half the loft space should be this tall. However, you could consider placing a loo or bathroom under the sloping eave, where headroom is less of a priority. Before beginning any construction work you will need to have architectural plans drawn up, that meet either permitted development or planning permission requirements as well as party wall agreements if your home is joined onto another at either side. Your loft conversion

26

You should always ensure that: l No more than 50 cubic metres of space is being added to a detached or semi-detached house. For terraced houses, this figure drops to 40 cubic metres. These figures take into account any previous loft additions. l You’re not raising the existing roof height or altering the front of the building significantly. The back can usually be changed physically and cosmetically, but it’s wise to consult with your local council to be sure. l As mentioned above, there should be 2.1 metres of head height in the main part of the conversion. l You must apply for planning permission for any balcony or terrace.

Horoscopes for April

Your Aries

(March 21 - April 19)

If you are tempted to overspend, try to resist the urge. This is likely to be a very social period in your calendar and you may need to watch any potential strain on your finances. You will be in great demand on the social circuit and others will seek out your company.

Taurus

(April 20 - May 20)

Your patience could well be put to the test. There could be a situation where you will need to forgive and forget, rather than harping on about something that has irritated you. Your emotions may be up and down but mentally you will remain strong and able to deal with anything.

Gemini

(May 21 - June 20)

Cancer

(June 21 - July 22)

This could be a profitable period for those born under the sign of the Twins. You will be confident enough to take risks, and if you make investments this month, they may prove profitable in the future. An approach to your bosses about a pay rise may prove more successful than before. Cancer charts show you may need to slow down and take more care of your health. You may also need time to de-stress and get away from the workplace. A few hours of relaxation, especially at weekends, could be of great benefit to you.

Leo

(July 23 - August 22)

You are going to experience a certain amount of fulfillment where your career is concerned and much satisfaction will be gained from doing well and achieving your goals. Others will seek you out for advice which they will follow and you could find yourself becoming a bit of a guru at work.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22) 01352870752 | 07850333990 You will be dealing with a lot of money-related issues during this period and your horoscope

predictions suggest that any financial speculations you make will be fruitful, though you will not indulge in impulsive spending; rather, you will be taking a more measured and careful approach.

Libra (September 23 - October 22)

Life may slow down for Libra folk, offering some welcome rest from the recent whirl of activity, giving you time to spend with family and close friends. It is a time for quiet reflection, recovery and an ideal time to re-charge your batteries.

Scorpio

(October 23 - November 21)

This is likely to be a spiritual phase for Scorpions where you will be in a reflective and contemplative mood. It is entirely likely that stepping back from the business in your life will make you spiritually stronger. Don’t feel guilty about taking time out to relax.

Sagittarius

(November 22 - December 21)

You may see the need to sort out minor issues in personal relationships. It would be beneficial to all concerned if both parties could listen to the other and act directly and quickly upon what has been said. You may need to curb their idealism and learn to be more practical in their relationships.

Capricorn

(December 22 - January 19)

Aquarius

(January 20 - February 18)

You may feel a bit fragile - whether this is due to stress at work, family problems or simply that your work/life balance is off-kilter. In any case, Capricorns could find alternative therapies very helpful, especially when symptoms like tiredness, headaches and indigestion are vague annoyances. Your finances will be in great shape during this phase and there could be an influx of money which you didn’t know was coming. This will mean that you can fulfill some of your wishes or desires. It could be a lucky time for you in all aspects of your financial dealings, so don’t be afraid to be bold.

Pisces

(February 19 - March 20)

You could find yourself in a quiet and reflective mood and feel a bit down and dejected. It may be that you are struggling with the pace of your life at the moment so be mindful that life doesn’t always have to go at a hundred miles an hour.

It happened this month ...in1994: suicide

Kurt Cobain’s

Kurt Cobain killed himself with a single shotgun wound to the head on April 5, 1994. The body of the rock icon and Nirvana frontman was discovered inside his home in Seattle, Washington, three days later by an electrician who was installing a security system in Cobain’s suburban house. After walking away from a rehabilitation clinic on March 30, Cobain convinced a friend to buy him a gun, claiming he needed it for protection. On April 5, Cobain returned home. He had ingested enough Valium and heroin to reach near-fatal levels. In the apartment above the garage was Cobain’s sloppily written suicide note, quoting Neil Young’s lyric that it is “better to burn out than to fade away.”

...in1956: Grace Kelly marries Prince Rainier

American actress Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier of Monaco in a spectacular ceremony on April 18, 1956. Kelly met Prince Rainier of Monaco while filming an Alfred Hitchcock movie, To Catch a Thief (1955), in the French Riviera. It wasn’t love at first sight for Kelly, but the prince initiated a long correspondence, which led to their marriage in 1956. Afterward, she became Princess Grace of Monaco and retired from acting. She had three children and occasionally narrated documentaries. Kelly died tragically at the age of 52 when her car plunged off a mountain road by the Cote D’Azur in September 1982.

...in1961: Yuri Gagarin - the first man in space

Yuri Gagarin was the first person to fly in space. His flight, on April 12, 1961, lasted 108 minutes as he circled the Earth for a little more than one orbit in the Soviet Union’s Vostok spacecraft. Following the flight, Gagarin became a cultural hero in the Soviet Union. Even today, more than six decades after the historic flight, Gagarin is widely celebrated in Russian space museums, with numerous artifacts, busts and statues displayed in his honor. His remains are buried at the Kremlin in Moscow, and part of his spacecraft is on display at the RKK Energiya museum.

Find the right location

Whether you’re setting up your outdoor cinema at the bottom of the garden or on a balcony or roof terrace, make sure you have a piece of ground that’s dry and sheltered from the wind. Also try to avoid setting up in a spot where streetlights or bright indoor lights might reflect against the screen.

Invest in a projector

Decent projectors used to be hugely expensive the lights on, and have plummeted in price. They’re also quieter and more compact. When you’re shopping for a projector, you’ll see each one has a lumen measurement. More lumens make it easier to see the projected image in bright conditions. In a garden after dark, we recommend at least 3000 lumens.

Connect a video source

Make an outdoor cinema in your back garden

O

UTDOOR cinema screenings were huge news last summer. But given it’s highly unlikely anyone will be enjoying an open-air movie night at the local park any time soon, why not host one in your own backyard? It doesn’t have to be expensive and best of all, you get to choose which film to watch.

Please mention Inside Flintshire or Chester Magazine when responding to advertisements

This could be a DVD or Blu Ray player, a laptop or a streaming device such as an Amazon Fire TV, which you’ll need to connect to your projector through its HDMI port. Then connect a speaker through your projector’s 3.5 mm jack, or look for a model with Bluetooth. Go for the latter and you’ll be able to connect wirelessly to a Bluetooth soundbar or speaker, and put more bang into your blockbuster.

Create your cinema screen

The easiest way to do this is to peg a white sheet to your washing line. You may want to weigh it down at the bottom so that it doesn’t move around in the breeze. You could also make your own screen by sewing together pieces of blackout lining, which you can buy by the metre. Tack lengths of timber to the top and bottom, attach screw hooks to the top, then hang over a row of nails on a wall or garden fence.

Easy vegan chocolate cake This indulgent, fudgy vegan bake is topped with a rich icing - you’d never guess that it’s free from dairy, eggs, wheat and nuts

Step-by-step 1 Heat oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 3. Grease two

20cm sandwich tins with a little dairy-free sunflower spread, then line the bases with baking parchment.

2 Put 1 large avocado and 300g light muscovado sugar in a food processor and whizz until smooth.

3 Add 350g gluten-free plain flour, 50g cocoa powder,

Ingredients For the cake l A little dairy-free sunflower spread, for l l l l l l l l l

4 Divide between the tins and bake for 25 mins or

until fully risen and a skewer inserted into the middle of the cakes comes out clean.

Prep: 3min

5 Cool in the tins for 5 mins, then turn the cakes onto a rack to cool completely.

6 While you wait, start preparing the frosting. Beat Cook: 25mins

together 85g ripe avocado flesh and 85g dairy-free sunflower spread with electric beaters until creamy and smooth. Pass through a sieve and set aside.

7 Melt 200g dairy-free chocolate, either over a bowl

For the icing l 85g ripe avocado flesh, mashed l 85g dairy-free sunflower spread

1 tsp bicarbonate of soda, 2 tsp gluten-free baking powder, 400ml unsweetened soya milk, 150ml vegetable oil and 2 tsp vanilla extract to the bowl with ½ tsp fine salt and process again to a velvety, liquid batter.

8 Sift 25g cocoa powder into a large bowl. Bring

l 200g dairy-free chocolate, 70% cocoa, broken

125ml unsweetened soya milk to a simmer, then gradually beat into the cocoa until smooth. Cool for a few mins.

l 25g cocoa powder

9 Tip in the avocado mix, 200g sifted icing sugar,

into chunks

l 125ml unsweetened soya milk

l 200g icing sugar, sifted l 1 tsp vanilla extract l Gluten-free and vegan sprinkles, to decorate

melted chocolate and 1 tsp vanilla, and keep mixing to make a shiny, thick icing. Use this to sandwich and top the cake.

10 Cover with sprinkles or your own decoration, then leave to set for 10 mins before slicing. Can be made two days ahead.

Recipe tip

Working quickly: You need to spread the icing quite soon after it’s made, as it thickens quickly. If it does

thicken, just warm the bowl over a pan of hot water, or give it a few seconds in themicrowave, paddling the mixture around with a spatula until it’s smooth and shiny.

How does GPS work?

Part Two

... and how does it compare with AGPS? Last month we explained how GPS works but pointed out that, although it’s precise, it can be slow and uses a lot of power on both ends. GPS receivers require an unobstructed view of multiple satellites to work. Obstructions can include tall buildings, and that means the places where most of us live can (and does) have trouble getting the data it needs all of the time. That’s where AGPS comes into the picture.

What is AGPS?

For starters, you probably use AGPS - Assisted Global Positioning System - when you want your location from your phone. As mentioned, GPS radios use a lot of power, and unless they stay in constant use, it can take up to a minute each and every time you get new data. Since you usually want your location while on the move, that can be a burden. AGPS adds cellular location data to assist geolocation. Your phone carrier knows where you are since your phone “pings” cell towers. How precise this is will depend on the strength of the signal between your phone and the tower, but it’s usually good enough to be used for location data. Software on your phone feeds this raw cellular location data to the GPS receiver, which will periodically switch between GPS data and cellular location to get a very close approximation (within 50 meters or so) in real-time. In other words, GPS can use data collected by your phone from the cell site it is connected to in order to work faster and more accurately.

60

AGPS does send data out of your phone, but its data that was already being sent when it checks for cell towers in range. You’re not charged for this, but you will need an active data plan to use AGPS.

Which is better?... GPS or AGPS?

That’s an easy question: Neither, because you’ll want to use both.

AGPS is required for best performance, using battery life and speed as metrics. We want our phone to know where we are in real-time, not to use a lot of battery power to do it and to be able to refresh whenever the software needs it without waiting too long for a good GPS lock. AGPS location isn’t as precise as a true GPS location will be, but it’s a good start, and the microadjustments that can be made with true GPS data when it refreshes makes up for most discrepancies. As mentioned, AGPS needs a cellular connection. That means there are cases where GPS is preferred. Any time you have no data connection, you’ll be unable to use cellular-assisted GPS. The same goes when you don’t have a good enough connection to any cell towers in range of your phone. Most apps that require location also require a data connection, but some, like Geocaching apps, live on your phone’s storage and will work while you’re off the beaten path If you have a need to share your location, you’ll want to enable everything you can. Just remember, you can turn it all back off when you no longer need it.

Edward I & Wales, 1254-1307 AUTHOR: David Pilling The late 13th century witnessed the conquest of Wales after two hundred years of conflict between Welsh princes and the English crown. In 1282 Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, the only native Prince of Wales to be formally acknowledged by a King of England, was slain by English forces. His brother Dafydd continued the fight, but was eventually captured and executed. Further revolts followed under Rhys ap Maredudd, a former crown ally, and Madog ap Llywelyn, a kinsman of the defeated lords of Gwynedd. The Welsh wars were a massive undertaking for the crown, and required the mobilisation of all resources. Edward’s willingness to direct the combined power of the English state and church against the Prince of Wales, to an unprecedented degree, resulted in a victory that had eluded all of his predecessors. This latest study of the Welsh wars of Edward I will draw upon previously untranslated archive material, allowing a fresh insight into military and political events. Edward’s personal relationship with Welsh leaders is also reconsidered. Traditionally, the conquest is dated to the fall of Llywelyn in December 1282, but this book will argue that Edward was not truly the master of Wales until 1294. 68 62

In the years between those two dates he broke the power of the great Marcher lords and crushed two further large-scale revolts against crown authority.

WIN A COPY

After 1294 he was able to exploit Welsh manpower on a massive scale. His successors followed the same policy during the Scottish wars and the Hundred Years War. Edward enjoyed considerable support among the ‘uchelwyr’ or Welsh gentry class, many of whom served him as diplomats and spies as well as military captains. This aspect of the king’s complex relationship with the Welsh will also feature. About The Author David Pilling is a self-employed author and historian based in West Wales, where he was raised on a smallholding. As a child he acquired a love for the Welsh countryside and Welsh history, especially the medieval era. His particular interests lie in the Edwardian wars of the late 13th century. Home Instead have continued to keep older members of the community safe and well throughout some of the toughest times. We speak to owner Matthew Murray-James about Home Instead’s journey to become one of the leading providers of home care in Wales.

What made you decide to set up Home Instead? Providing great care is much harder than it sounds. I was looking for care for my own grandmother and it was a real struggle to find a good quality care provider that met all our needs. When we discovered Home Instead, the quality of care was outstanding – we couldn’t have asked for more. When I found out there was an opportunity to set up my own branch of Home Instead, it was an easy decision for me to take, despite working in a completely different field at the time. Being able to deliver consistently high standards of care to others is something I feel really passionate about – Home Instead’s own ethos completely aligns with that. Together with my wife Sam, we’ve been running Home Instead Wrexham & Flintshire for over six years now and have consistently been recognised as one of the Top Home Care Providers in Wales (through independent feedback at homecare.co.uk). We’re so proud to be part of the Home Instead family and to see how much the business has grown and developed.

How has Home Instead responded to the recent pandemic?

What is so different about Home Instead's care? Everyone who works for Home Instead has the same goal – making a difference to the lives of our clients. We don’t believe that care should be “one-size fits all” – all our clients are unique individuals and their care needs reflect this. We offer bespoke, tailored care packages that can meet their exact needs and expectations. We also offer longer care visits – it’s really important to us that we build up great, lasting relationships with our clients. My aim is for our CAREGivers to feel like an extension of the family, so clients feel comfortable and at ease in their company. We pride ourselves on our wonderful team of CAREGivers – their compassion and warmth, their reliability, their consistency and the exceptional quality of care they provide. We also have a fantastic team of office staff, working behind the scenes to support them and keep the cogs turning. Together they make a formidable team – we wouldn’t have got to where we are today without the dedication of our staff.

Despite lots of panic and uncertainty around us, business has pretty much carried on as usual for our team! We’ve been busier than ever due to many people needing additional care, especially when families have been unable to visit or travel due to restrictions. Ensuring the safety of our clients during this time has been our number one priority. From Day 1, we introduced strict infection control measures, extra training and full PPE for our CAREGivers. Remote working became the norm for our office team and we are now in full swing with regular COVID testing too. The vaccine programme brings hope that we are now on a brighter path and we are thankful that all our active staff have now been vaccinated. We have certainly missed the face to face interaction with the local community through our outreach programmes, such as our Memory Lane cafe or Love to Move classes . As the country begins to open back up we really look forward to seeing everyone in person again.
