6 best UK theme parks to visit in summer 2021 High octane rides at Alton Towers and family fun in the Scottish highlands at Landmark Adventure Park... UK for 20 years. Tickets for Alton Towers start at around £34. altontowers.com

THORPE PARK

Spine-tingling vertical drops, powerful G forces and countless loop-de-loops, the UK can hold its own with the best of them when it comes to rollercoasters. For a small country we're blessed with some excellent theme parks; thrill seekers have big hitters like Alton Towers and Thorpe Park, there's some excellent family-friendly days out to be had on the south coast and in the Scottish Highlands, while the natural world and conservation is represented well too. Here's some ideas for a memorable trip.

ALTON TOWERS Staffordshire's Alton Towers has long been a favourite of adrenaline junkies and it's 18

status as one of the UK's most popular attractions is unlikely to change anytime soon. A height restriction on the park's rides means the headline attractions are often cunningly, innovatively built into its landscape. Old favourites like Nemesis and Oblivion still stand proudly well into their third decade and the park has continued to freshen things up in recent times. Rita takes riders to just under 100kph, while Galactica (which replaced Air, the world's first flying coaster) comes with a virtual reality headset that simulates a trip through the cosmos. The new kid on the block is The Wicker Man – the first wooden rollercoaster to be built in the

With some of the biggest, fastest rides in Europe, Thorpe Park is another winner for those looking for white knuckle thrills. The terrifying Saw – The Ride has a 'beyond vertical' 100 degree drop; the eye-poppingly fast Stealth is anything but, going from 0 to 130kph in 1.9 seconds; and The Swarm ominously suspends riders upside down before a dive drop that gives way to 90 seconds of frantic dodging. Derren Brown's Ghost Train and The Walking Dead provide indoor thrills, while the

Tidal Wave is still loads of fun – but bringing a change of clothes might be a good idea. Tickets for Thorpe Park start at around £39 for a day ticket. thorpepark.com

LANDMARK ADVENTURE PARK What Landmark doesn't have giant rollercoasters, it makes up for with its proximity to natural beauty and attractions that make the most of incredible surroundings. Situated in Carrbridge, near Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands, it's a

LEGOLAND WINDSOR Lego is loved the world over by kids and parents alike, with the toys, video games and movies all contributing to it's enduring popularity. Still going strong is the theme park too, with Legoland Windsor attracting millions of visitors every year. It's split into twelve lands, with educational and entertaining attractions, restaurant and shops to peruse. Tickets for Legoland Windsor start at around £26. legoland.co.uk

BLACKPOOL PLEASURE BEACH

family-friendly park with lots to please kids. The Tarzan and Timber Trails offer a picturesque tour of the ancient forest; the Fire Tower gives spectacular views for miles around; and for those of a more adventurous persuasion, there's the Runaway Timber Train, the 50ft Skydive simulator and an old favourite in the triple threat of the Otter, Falcon and Wildcat, the Wild Water Coaster. Tickets for Landmark start at £19 for adults and £17 for children. landmarkpark.co.uk

The summer's the perfect time to visit the seaside city of Blackpool, home of the UK's first double-launch coaster ICON cost over £16m to build and once it's open to the public it'll be the fastest at the old park. Still standing is

the iconic structure The Big One – the tallest in the UK – as well as The Big Dipper and the Grand National, wooden coasters that have stood since the 1930s. Kids will love Nickelodeon land and Wallace & Gromit: The ThrillO-Matic. Wristbands start at £32 for adults and £28 for under 11s. Save money with advance tickets. blackpoolpleasurebeach.com

DRAYTON MANOR The Shockwave, Europe's only stand up coaster, and the five-sided 54-metre drop tower Apocalypse are the headline attractions at Drayton Manor, just east of Birmingham. There's far more to see at the park though, like the Tamarin Trail, which allows visitors to come face-to-face with mischievous marmosets. Fans of Thomas the Tank Engine are in luck too: Drayton Manor is home to Thomas Land, with all your favourite fictional locomotive characters represented. Advance tickets for Drayton Manor start from £28.50 for over 12s, and from £24.50 for under 12s and from £26.50 over 60s. draytonmanor.co.uk

Doner kebab

Make your own version of this takeaway favourite, complete with chilli and garlic sauces. Serve your homemade doner kebab with pitta bread and shredded cabbage.

Ingredients l 500g lamb mince l 1 small onion, coarsely grated l 4 garlic cloves, minced or finely l l l l l l

grated 100g fresh breadcrumbs 2 tsp ground cumin 2 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp dried oregano ¼ tsp smoked paprika sunflower oil for oiling

To serve Pitta breads, shredded red or white cabbage, sliced onion, chopped tomatoes, pickled chillies, chilli sauce, garlic sauce, tahini.

Step-by-step 1 Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/ gas 6. Tip all the ingredients except the oil into a food processor with a large pinch of salt and lots of ground 20

pepper. Pulse until everything is combined and chopped together. You can also just squash everything together in a bowl but this will give you a looser finish.

2 Oil a large sheet of foil, tip the

meat mix in the middle and mould to a very thick sausage, roughly the shape of an aubergine. Roll up the foil tightly, twisting up the ends to create a Christmas cracker shape.

3 Lay on a shallow roasting tin and roast in the oven for 35-40 mins, turning occasionally, or until thermometer reads 75C when pierced in the middle. Leave the kebab to cool a little, then unwrap foil. Place back on the tray and brown under the grill or with a blowtorch.

Please mention Inside Flintshire or Chester Magazine when responding to advertisements

4 Place on a board and carve into thin slices. For full doner mode, you can hold the kebab up with a roasting fork or metal skewer and carve. Serve with warm pitta bread and any of the other accompaniments, including our chilli sauce and garlic yogurt sauce.

Close-by to the north, Filey Brigg has some impressive rock pools to explore, where you may even find the odd fossil or two, and also marks the

How to plan a loft conversion

L

Know your building regulations

AST month we examined whether your attic space is suitable for a conversion. We also explained what kind of developments would be permitted.

Part Two

summer and feeling extra chilly in winter.

This month we guide you through the various building regulations which your loft conversion needs to meet.

For walls and ceilings, specialists generally use a rigid insulation such as Celotex insulation boards, while a fibre blanket such as Gyprock Rockwool is often used between floor joists. This insulation should be 150-250mm thick in order to satisfy building regulations for thermal, sound and fire insulation. Soundproofing is also advised.

Access to your loft space

Fire regulations

Building regulations stipulate that if the loft is to be turned into a bedroom, bathroom, study or playroom, it must have a permanent staircase. The stairs leading to it need not be as wide as the steps on the lower flights. The most minimal arrangements resemble a fixed ladder and a spiral staircase offers an attractive solution where space is tight. When weighing up the pros and cons of converting, look at the space you will lose on the floor below to accommodate the new stairs, and check in particular the head height available.

Insulating a loft conversion

Part L of the building regulations insists on a good standard of insulation. The main reason for this is that loft spaces can be subject to extreme temperatures, getting very hot in

30

Fire regulations should be incorporated in your earliest plans. Building materials must comply with standards of fire resistance - your builder should have this in hand. At the very least, you will need to fit a smoke detector in the hallway. However, any building with a floor more than 7.5 metres above the ground should have a sprinkler system. In a two-storey home, internal doors around the staircase must be replaced with fire doors to create a protected path from the attic down to the ground-floor exit. If there are several rooms in your conversion, you need to provide an emergency exit to the roof. The easiest, most attractive option is to fit a fire-escape window large enough to climb through in each space. Next month we look at the different types of loft conversion.

Campervan hire

A beginner’s guide to renting a motorhome Part One HINKING about a campervan or motorhome holiday for the first time? Here are our tips and hints for hiring a campervan in the UK and beyond.

Planning your trip

Is your experience of camping more mud than mod cons? Do you get restless staying at the same place for an entire holiday? Hiring a campervan may well be your ticket to freedom. Just imagine; an open road, the flexibility to move on and explore when you want, and all with a solid roof and a place to keep the wine chilled. Whether you’re thinking about a weekend at Glastonbury, a coastto-coast road trip or a fortnight’s family holiday, campervan hire is an ideal option. In our guide, we look at choosing the right vehicle, getting familiar with the facilities, and the costs of hiring a van or motorhome.

32

Choosing the right campervan

Mention campervans and many people instantly think of the iconic vintage VW. But after doing a bit of research, you may find that a modern equivalent ticks the right boxes for you. Less romantic of course, but a well-equipped VW California or luxurious motorhome may just give you the comfort and space for that all-important, relaxing experience.

Classic campervans

Splitscreen or bay-windowed VWs are certainly the classic option and provided your hire company has maintained it well there are many possibilities. Vintage campers are generally most suitable for up to two people, and although some may ‘officially’ accommodate up to four people, the reality is that more than two is a squeeze, especially when you factor in storage for the extra luggage. Pop-top options increase the sleeping space, but if there are four of you, consider taking a small tent to pitch next to the van as an extra bedroom.

Modern conversions

More recent campervans based on the VW Transporter, Mazda Bongo and Toyota Previa may offer a more reliable and practical option. They generally drive like a large car with a ‘high up’ driving position, and their modern diesel engines are quieter and more fuel efficient than vintage options. Choose a VW California or similar Transporter conversion to sleep up to four adults; Bongos, Previas and other campers are slightly smaller so will sleep two with up to two younger children. You may hear people talk about ‘conversions’ and ‘factory’ models. This generally refers to vehicles that started life as panel vans before being converted into fully-equipped campervans, usually by specialist companies. Factory models are built as campervans by the manufacturer, which can mean a higher spec and better storage configuration, such as the current VW California.

Motorhomes

Moving up in size again, motorhomes are a very popular hire option in the UK. While they won’t win any prizes for style, they win hands-down on space, practicality and comfort. They’ll sleep up to six in a range of fixed and folddown bed configurations, and normally come with mod-cons such as a toilet, shower and TV. All this space comes at a cost, however. You’ll certainly be conscious of driving a larger vehicle and navigating smaller roads and car parks may concern those of a nervous disposition. But if your trip is more long-distance motorway driving and wide open countryside, the motorhome option is a good one.

Also common are wind-out awnings (attached to the side of the van) and porta pottis (or even fixed toilets and showers in larger motorhomes). When you pick up a hired campervan or motorhome you should only need to take your clothes, food and other

Campervan hire costs

Expect to pay between £350 and £1,200 for a week’s campervan or motorhome hire in the UK, plus extras such as an awning. Before you book, it’s important to check the small print and make sure the following are covered and you are happy with the arrangements: l Are there mileage limits, and what happens if you exceed those limits? l Are there any additional costs for insurance and extra drivers? l What are the arrangements for breakdown cover? (This should be included by most reputable firms). l Is there a minimum age limit for the driver?

What facilities to expect

The basic cooking facilities include a fridge, two-burner gas hob, water tank, sink and tap. Some may also have a grill or oven. This might not seem much but it’s a considerable step up from cooking under canvas!

A Campervan holiday: Your ticket to freedom

Foldable beds (that are stowed away for driving or living) are the standard option but you may also find fixed bunk beds and even double beds in a motorhome. Pop-top roofs - some that lift at the touch of a button - are great fun for little ones and an exciting ‘upstairs’ play space in inclement weather. In terms of washing facilities, it’s usually only the larger motorhomes that will have fixed toilets and showers although many hire companies will include a portable toilet (a porta potti) with a hired camper van. A campervan’s multi-functional design means that fold-out tables, swivelling front seats, ingenious storage solutions and internal lighting are de rigeur.

personal effects such as games, sports equipment and camera. Rental companies should provide the basics including bedding, cooking equipment and an outdoor table and chairs. Some may even include extras (some of which may be chargeable) such as DVD players, bike racks, roof racks and driveaway awnings. While you’ll be well equipped, just make sure you know how to use it all. Least familiar will probably be the ‘utilities’ - electricity, gas, water and toilet/disposal - ask your hire company for written instructions and a demonstration on pick-up. Most motorhomes and camper vans can be plugged into a campsite’s electric hook-up, powering 240v plug sockets, internal lights, fridges and ovens/grills.

When budgeting for your holiday, you’ll also need to allow for overnight campsite fees and fuel costs (larger motorhomes may only manage an eye-watering 12-18 mpg, for example).

Essential hints and tips

l Choose the right vehicle to suit your trip: make sure it has sufficient space and storage for your party and is suitable for the distances you’ll be travelling. l Pick a reputable campervan rental firm, and grill them on the small print. l Make sure the hire company gives you a full briefing on every aspect of the campervan or motorhome. l Enjoy! Even the mishaps will become stories to recount and laugh about in years to come.

...in 1966: The Beatles’ final concert

Although they made an unannounced live appearance in January 1969 on the rooftop of the Apple building, The Beatles’ final live concert took place on August 29, 1966 at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, California. In 1966 The Beatles were at the height of their fame and, after finishing a string of gigs in Asia earlier that year, the band set out on a North American tour through the summer of ’66. The Asian leg of the tour was particularly heated, and according to Ringo Starr, “In 1966 the road was getting pretty boring. It was coming to the end for me. Nobody was listening at the shows. That was OK at the beginning, but now we were playing really badly.” The amount of screaming fans at The Beatles’ gigs made it so they could not even hear themselves play, but after retiring from live performance they concentrated exclusively on studio work, recording four more legendary albums before splitting in 1970.

In an evening televised address on August 8, 1974, President Richard M. Nixon announced his intention to become the first president in American history to resign. Wardrobe tech

Part One

The new fabrics and technologies changing the clothes you wear Users can control both when the colour change happens and what pattern will appear on the fabric using an app.

If you’re a long-term fan of Back to the Future II, you’ll still be waiting to wear a pair of self-lacing Nike trainers. But while these smart shoes may not be part of your wardrobe (just yet) there are a whole host of smart textiles and clothes from buzzing yoga pants to intelligent sports socks that can be and a bunch of futuristic fashion coming soon too.

Colour -changing clothes A new colour-changing fabric has been developed which enables the wearer to change its colour using their smartphone (pic, above left).

Each thread woven into Chromorphous’ fabric incorporates within it a thin metal micro-wire. An electric current flows through the micro-wires, slightly raising the thread’s temperature. Special pigments embedded in the thread then respond to this change of temperature by changing its colour.

44

For example, a solid purple tote bag now has the ability to gradually add blue stripes when you press a “stripe” button on your smartphone or computer. This means we may own fewer clothes in the future but have more colour combinations than ever before.

Good vibrations for sportswear

Many of us have planned on greeting the day with a spot of yoga, but sometimes it’s hard to know how to get into the right positions and how long to hold them for.

Fitness clothing with built-in haptic feedback or vibrations could help (main pic). The Nadi X yoga pants from Wareable X have accelerometers and vibrating motors woven into the fabric around the hips, knees and ankles that gently vibrate to give you instruction on how to move. When paired with the Nadi X mobile app, visual and audio cues break down yoga poses step-by-step with corresponding vibrations directly from the pants. Data is collected and analysed and the app can track your goals, performance and progression.

Please mention Inside Flintshire or Chester Magazine when responding to advertisements

We may one day have gym kit that could instruct us in everything from rugby to ballet, using gentle pulses.

Self-cleaning clothes

If you do the laundry for your family, self-cleaning clothes are probably at the top of your futuristic fashion wish list. Scientists now claim tiny metal structures attached to cotton fibres can break down grime when exposed to sunlight. Researchers grew 3D copper and silver nanostructures on cotton thread, which was then woven into a piece of fabric.

When it was exposed to light, the nanostructures absorbed the energy, exciting the electronics in the metal atoms.

This made grime on the surface of the fabric break down, cleaning itself in around six minutes. Good news ... but will they tackle tomato ketchup and grass stains? Only time will tell.

It may be the name of a popular 1960s song, but ‘California Dreaming’ is also what many wannabe VW camper van owners do on a regular basis. The California had initially seen the light of day on Volkswagen’s T3, then converted by Westfalia Coachworks.

Coinciding with the launch of the VW T5 in 2003, the manufacturer announced that it was bringing the conversions in-house; but it wasn’t until 2005 when we first saw right-hand drive examples in Blighty.

Power units at launch ranged from a 1.9-litre 85bhp TD to a 2.5-litre 174bhp TD, all at Euro 4. Transmission was a five- or six-speed manual or a six-speed ASG robotised automatic gearbox.

The old maxim ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ could well have been coined to describe the longevity of the VW camper van layout: a run of kitchen furniture down one side with a rock-n-roll double seat/bed towards the rear. Swivelling cab seats add to the seating compliment. The layout was designed to make the most efficient use of space when the Volkswagen had a rear-mounted engine. It remains popular because it offers so much uncluttered floor space, important in a conversion of modest dimensions.

In 2009, the 2.0-litre Euro 5 engine was first fitted with either a six-speed manual ’box or the legendary super-smooth, seven-speed, dual-clutch DSG robotised automatic. Its 4Motion was an extra-cost all-wheel drive system.

Although the original VW California models offered a choice of roof type, this generation was stuck with a no-option, rear-hinged elevating one with fabric sides. Fair do’s, because it also offers oodles of standing room on site. At under 2m high when retracted, the VW T5 California will squeeze into many multi-storey car parks and will suffer less wind resistance on the road.

T5 VW Californias can be ordered in many shades and have an options list as long as a python. Be aware that there is a cheaper version called the VW California Beach which is really a minibus with seven seats, two beds and an elevating-roof. It isn’t really a camper van, but can be fitted with extra cost kitchen and storage modules.

Nearly all included VW’s BlueMotion Technology (BMT). This consists of four main features: cruise control (later, adaptive), low-rolling-resistance tyres, regenerative braking and a start/stop engine.

The essentials

Volkswagen California on SWB VW Transporter T5 ● Base vehicle built and converted in Germany between 2005 and 2015. ● Elevating-roof camper on the Caravelle/Multivan five-door people carrier. ● Overall length: 4.892m (16’ 6”).

What to look for

Parallel parking is made diffcult by the wardrobe blocking over-the-shoulder nearside rearward sight lines. It beggars belief on something sold as safe and child-friendly. Read more at https://www.practicalmotorhome. com/advice/39903-used-t5-vw-camper-van-buyersguide#39GRUEDjv1I2shFd.99

A full main dealer or commercial-vehicle specialist service history is essential. Some were available to VW staff as company vehicles; these may well have higher mileages than owner-driver leisure vehicles.

Conversion

It’s in a class of its own with special mouldings for a totally integrated look. Some find the bed suffers from transverse ridges, so try before you buy. The main snag is that VW didn’t hand the conversion for UK users, so a distracted parent could discharge the children into the road on the school run.

Design solutions to make the most of a sloped outdoor space

ON’T let a sloped garden limited your design expectations - slopes can in fact offer an element of interest that flat perspectives can’t. With thoughtful landscaping even the steepest and most fractured of gardens can be picturesque and practical. Our expert sloping garden ideas will inspire you to use an incline to your advantage, making the most of a sloping garden by creating different levels, each with a different purpose.

1. Soften a steep slope with grass steps If your garden is on different levels and you’re not keen on hard landscaping, take inspiration from this garden (main pic ). Instead of incorporating stone steps, integrate them into the existing lawn to connect the lower patio to the small sun terrace above. Creating a softer approach to the flow of the garden, seamlessly journeying from one space to the other.

2. Raise a seating area This comprises a garden that gently slopes up in two

50

directions into the far corner. Make the slope a design feature rather than a design feat. Levelling the whole garden is very expensive in terms of creating the retaining walls along the boundaries. Instead, level the main terrace and lawn area then work with the natural slope, incorporating the three chunky overlapping concrete steps leading up to a slightly elevated seating area.

3. Work with an incline to create a water feature In the landscaped garden pictured bottom left, you’ll see how the uneven ground is used to naturally create a drop water feature. The grade of the slope is perfect for creating the bespoke two-level water feature. The different levelled groundwork lends itself perfectly to make a cascading water feature.

4. Zone with different levels A steep sloping garden naturally invites the creation of clearly defined zones, each providing a different purpose. The result of creating a cascade of turfed terraces (bottom left) helps to shape an otherwise unusable garden into a multifunctional family space. It’s a more usable garden with different areas to sit and relax in.

History

Labrador Retrievers originated in Newfoundland, off the coast of Canada. Theywere originally bred as a working dog, usually for fishermen, to help haul in nets and fetch things on boats. They are the most popular breed in a number of countries including the US and UK, and are often chosen as assistance dogs for blind and disabled owners, too. Most recently they’ve been found to be wonderful “Therapy Dogs”, visiting hospitals and hospices to cheer up residents, and they can be found working for police forces and armies as drugs and bombdetection dogs. In fact, five Labradors have won Dickin Medals for their bravery or acts of devotion.

Appearance

Labradors are typically black, yellow (shades vary from a darker, almost-tan colour to a bright white or fawn) or chocolate brown. They are generally muscular and athletic when they are younger but are prone to weight gain as they age, so daily exercise is important. Their coats are short and require minimal grooming. They are mediumlarge dogs, with the males tending to be bigger and more muscular. They can vary though; different families can come from different backgrounds. So, where a puppy from a family of working dogs will tend to be stockier and more muscular a puppy bred from show dogs will be more streamlined.

Things to watch out for

their own wellbeing and are also more than happy to go swimming in cold water, so look out for Limber Tail (where their tails go limp from exposure to cold). Always keep an eye out for limps or tenderness and give them a check-over after walks to make sure they haven’t picked up any thorns in their fur or between the pads of their paws.

Temperament

They are incredibly loyal, friendly and trainable dogs. They are outgoing and eager to please, and are wonderful family dogs. They are very energetic and will need around 30-60 minutes of exercise a day to make sure they are happy and to prevent them from putting on weight as they’re always happy to have a snack or two and will eagerly polish off any food that is left unattended.

Is a labrador for me?

If you’re looking for a large, cooperative, friendly canine pal you needn’t look further. If you have the time and ability to meet their needs and put in the groundwork with their training, you can expect a relatively easy life with your Labrador. As with any breed, though, we always recommend doing your research and choosing a breed with care.

Fun labrador fact

It’s possible to have yellow, black and chocolate puppies in a single litter.

Because they have been bred to be working dogs, Labradors have a lot of energy. On walks they have a tendency to throw themselves through brambles and barbed wire fences with little regard for

History

The Dachshund, literally translating to ‘badger dog’ and affectionately known as the Sausage Dog, is a German dog breed developed over 300 years ago. The standard-sized Dachshunds were bred for the purpose of hunting badgers, owed to their long bodies and short legs which allowed them to burrow and dig into tunnels. In the UK, Dachshunds come in two sizes – standard and miniature - however, a third smaller size, kaninchen (‘rabbit’ in German) is recognised elsewhere by the World Canine Federation.

Appearance

Dachshunds may have a smooth and shiny coat, a wired coarse coat or a longhaired coat, and their grooming needs will vary depending on which coat they have. Colours can range from red, black, to chocolate or tan, or a mix of two or more of these. Dachshund breeds have a long snout and an elongated, muscular

Part three

Dachshund build with short legs - hence the name Sausage Dog!

Temperament

Dachshunds are loyal, intelligent, courageous, and dominant. They are pack dogs and while they love human and doggy companionship, they would generally prefer to live with other dachshunds or other small dogs which have similar temperaments. They tend to bark a lot, and don’t be fooled by their small stature - their bark can be very loud! You shouldn’t leave your Dachshund alone for more than 4 hours at a time. They should get at least one 45-60 minute walk every day or split into two 30 minute playtimes, and you should be careful allowing them to run if they have known back problems or other health conditions.

Things to watch out for

Because of their long backs, it is important that Dachshunds do not become overweight as this could lead to spinal and disk problems, hip dysplasia or patella luxation. Dachshunds are also susceptible to ear infections due to their floppy, folded ears so it is important to regularly check and clean their ears. A loyal breed, they have a tendency to attach to one person which may lead to problems with separation anxiety.

Is a dachshund for me?

Dachshunds cannot be left alone for long periods, so if you are out of the house all day you may wish to consider another breed. However, if your heart is set on this lovely little breed, it is advisable to hire a dog sitter or take them to doggy daycare. Dachshunds are great with children and would need to live with an active family who enjoys the outdoors. They love cuddling, are relatively odourless and do not require bathing as often as some other larger, thickercoated breeds. They are mild-tomoderate shedders, so if you don’t mind a bit of fur here and there, this could be the perfect breed for you!

Did you know?

The Dachshund’s popularity declined dramatically during the two World Wars because their pictures were used in Anti-German propaganda. However, today, they remain a highly popular and desired breed. To advertise text ADVERT to: 01352 870 760
