For businesses and individuals, you can rely on acclaim to deliver.
Genius ways to arrange your kitchen appliances lanning a new kitchen? Our kitchen appliance layout ideas will help you maximise your space and make cooking, cleaning and family mealtimes so much easier. When it comes to positioning your appliances, there are plenty of potential pitfalls. Always burning yourself when getting things out of the oven or not able to open your fridge door properly? You’ll know exactly what we mean. With all those nightmare scenarios in mind, we’ve put together some clever ideas that will make you kitchen easier to use and help maximise your space.
1. Conceal the cooker hood
There’s no need to make the cooker hood a feature in your kitchen. A discreet extractor installed above a cooker in an alcove will make the most of an awkward space.
2. Go for symmetry
Bookend appliances such as your ovens and integrated fridge-freezer either side of your hob if your space allows. This will ensure that food items and utensils are where you need them when cooking and the symmetry will create a calm, cohesive look.
14
Part One
3 Make it sociable
If you’d like the island to create a division between your dining and kitchen and space, think about situating your hob there. That way you can keep an eye on kids doing their homework or chat to them while you’re cooking.
4. Get them off the floor
So your dishwasher has to sit under your worktops, right? Not necessarily. Consider raising it a bit higher, and you’ll find loading and unloading it so much easier. The height of your oven is also crucial. Site it too low or too high and you might struggle to retrieve heavy casserole dishes, or pull out a tray of meat for basting.
5. Put all your appliances on one wall
This is a favourite approach of kitchen designer Michael Wright of Michael Wright Furniture. ‘It adds wow factor,’ he says, ‘and because the wiring is concentrated in one area, it’s an easier job for your electrician and delivers a cleaner, smarter looking room. You can incorporate everything from a fridge freezer to a wine cooler, oven, grill, microwave, coffee machine, steam oven and warmer drawer – and yes, some kitchens will have all of those!’

Protect your DOG’S paws this summer
20

TOP TIPS FOR PAWS IN HOT WEATHER... actually get hotter than the asphalt when in direct sunlight for prolonged periods!
CONSIDER DOG SHOES
O
wners love to be able to let their dogs join on the summer fun, but there are some hidden dangers to remember before heading out on a walk with your pooch. While most of us are aware of the unwanted visitors that hitch more rides on our dogs during the summer months, or the risk of heatstroke when the heat gets too much for Fido, we often forget that their paws are delicate, too.
PAWS AND PAVEMENTS While you might not normally put much thought into your dog’s daily walk it’s important to think about when and where your walk might lead you. Just like you would do to avoid heatstroke in your dog, go for a walk in the morning or evening as the pavement is much cooler then.
Avoid walking your dog in the afternoon as this is when the pavement will be at its hottest and you risk burning your dog’s paw pads. In the sun, Asphalt can reach twice the temperature of the ambient air, so on a 25-degree day, asphalt can reach over 50 degrees! Vets in the US came up with a test: Hold the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds – if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog and may burn its paws. Depending on the severity of the burn, it can take up to a few weeks for the effects of the burn to disappear.
STAY ON THE GRASS We know, the signs usually tell you to stay off the grass but in summer stick to walks with no pavements or sand. So, think about any local fields or forest you could venture to instead. Be careful about fake grass (e.g. AstroTurf, etc) as tests have shown that this can
If you have a dog that likes adventures whatever the weather or you have a path that gets hot in the garden or you don’t want to risk your dog hurting their paws in summer then you might want to consider buying some dog shoes. Summer dog shoes will often provide protection against burns and sharp object as well as provide some stability as most are anti-slip.
TOUGHEN YOUR DOG’S PAWS On the cooler days when the pavement’s not too hot as this will help toughen your dog’s paws. This can not only help with the prevention of burns in the future but can also help keep your dog’s nails at the right length.
WASH AND CHECK YOUR DOG’S PAWS Washing and checking your dog’s paws every day will let you check for any damage to their pads or foreign objects present and you’ll know if a visit to the vet is needed. Sticking to some of these steps can also help you prevent heat stroke in your dog and will help you enjoy the warm weather safely with your dog without a visit to the vet for something that could have been avoided.

What’s on this month... The Crown
3 seasons Starring: Olivia Colman, Helena Bonham Carter, Tobias Menzies Creator: Peter Morgan One of Netflix’s flagship shows across the globe, The Crown is reported to also be one of the most expensive television shows ever made. The glossy and sumptuous drama aims to chart the life and times of Queen Elizabeth II over several seasons, with some deliberately planned resets and cast changes to “age” the cast where time moves forward.
White Lines
1 season Starring: Laura Haddock, Nuno Lopes, Marta Milans Creator: Álex Pina Written by Money Heist’s Alex Pina, White Lines follows a woman named Zoe who returned to Ibiza to investigate her brother Axel’s disappearance, which happened 20 years prior. Axel went to the island to be a DJ, and when his body was discovered years later, there were plenty of mysteries that required Zoe’s attention.
24
Queen Of The South
4 seasons Starring: Alice Braga, Veronica Falcón, Justina Machado Creator: Joshua John Miller, M.A. Fortin When Teresa Mendoza’s drug-dealing boyfriend is unexpectedly murdered in Mexico, Teresa is forced to go on the run and seek refuge in America, where she teams with an unlikely figure from her past to bring down the leader of the very drug trafficking ring that has her on the run. In the process, she learns the tools of the trade and strategically positions herself to become the leader of the Cartel.
Stranger Things
3 seasons Starring: Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard Creator: The Duffer Brothers Paying homage to a 1980s Spielberg inspired world of walkie-talkies and Chopper bikes, the Duffer brothers’ Stranger Things is one of the biggest hits ever to be created by Netflix. A supernatural adventure filled with intrigue and horror, it tells the story of a group of four friends in Hawkins, Indiana that befriend a telekinetic super-girl and try to unpick a complicated and strange series of phenomena.
Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich 1 season This four-part documentary tells the story of financier Jeffrey Epstein, who died in prison while facing charges of sex trafficking. Using footage of Epstein being interviewed for an earlier charge alongside comments from prosecutors, associates and investigators, Lisa Bryant’s documentary is a fascinating and horrifying look at how one man escaped justice for decades, with the help of wealthy connections and one that prioritises the survivors over the perpetrator.

Step by step 1 To make the glaze for the chicken, combine the vinegar with 100ml/3½fl oz water in a saucepan.

This dish would also work really well on the barbecue. Brush the chicken with the sauce as it cooks, making sure you turn the meat frequently to prevent it from burning.

Jaguar Where exactly does the Jaguar E-Pace fit into the famous British brand’s line-up? Well, fairly obviously it’s an SUV, but Jaguar has three of those nowadays. There’s the electric I-Pace and the larger, more conventional F-Pace - so it’s best to think of the relatively compact E-Pace as the ‘cub’ of the range.

Suspension and ride comfort Although you can have relatively small 17in or 18in wheels, you notice your head tossing from side to side more vigorously than in a Range Rover Evoque or Volvo XC40 equipped with the same size wheels. The ride doesn’t settle down on the open road, either; things are far less settled than in an Evoque or XC40 on the motorway. This can get annoying after a while, so it’s worth taking a lengthy test drive before buying.
Handling If there’s one area that Jaguar can always be relied on to deliver then it’s handling - and the E-Pace does just that. To a point, at least. It’s taller and heavier than rivals such as the Audi Q3 and BMW X1, so it isn’t quite as eager to turn in to bends as those cars. Around town, the steering can feel quite heavy, making the E-Pace harder work to manoeuvre than some rivals, However, along faster, winding roads, that heft actually gives you confidence. Most versions come with fourwheel-drive, which predictably offers plenty of traction.
Interior The dashboard layout is fairly conventional; for example, there’s no touchscreen to control the air conditioning, but that’s a good thing because proper physical buttons and dials are less distracting to use when you’re driving.
view of the road ahead - which you don’t get in the lower-slung X1 and X2 and seeing out of the side windows at junctions and roundabouts isn’t too hard, either.
Passenger & boot space You’d have to be very tall to notice your barnet brushing the E-Pace’s ceiling. There interior is also fairly broad, so you won’t feel as though you’re shoulder-to-shoulder with your front passenger. The E-Pace has enough rear leg room to keep tall adults fairly happy, provided they aren’t sitting behind equally lofty people in the front. Head room is good, though - even those over 6ft are unlikely to have to cower. As far as the boot goes, you can fit six carry-on sized suitcases below the parcel shelf, compared with five in the Evoque, eight in the XC40 and nine in the X1. Thankfully, though, the E-Pace’s boot is a nice square shape, with a wide recess right at the back of the car.
E-Pace The E-Pace’s lofty driving position gives you a penthouse
Performance and drive
All of the engines are 2.0-litres in size, with the entry-level 148bhp D150 diesel is worth a look; it has enough oomph for nipping around town and the odd motorway stint. As for the petrol engines, the 197bhp P200 is quicker than any of the diesels bar the D240. However, it needs revving hard to extract that kind of performance.

... in 1936: gold medal
Jesse Owens wins fourth
On August 9, At the 1936 Berlin Olympics, African American track star Jesse Owens wins his fourth gold medal of the Games in the 4×100-meter relay. His relay team set a new world record of 39.8 seconds, which held for 20 years. In their strong showing in track-andfield events at the XIth Olympiad, Jesse Owens and other African American athletes struck a propaganda blow against Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, who planned to use the Berlin Games as a showcase of supposed Aryan superiority.

REBELLION AGAINST HENRY III AUTHOR: DAVID PILLING The 'Montfortian' civil wars in England lasted from 125967, though the death of Simon de Montfort and so many of his followers at the battle of Evesham in 1265 ought to have ended the conXict. In the aftermath of the battle, Henry III's decision to disinherit all the surviving Montfortians served to prolong the war for another two years. Hundreds of landless men took up arms again to defend their land and property: the redistribution of estates in the wake of Evesham occurred on a massive scale, as lands were either granted away by the king or simply taken by his supporters. The Disinherited, as they were known, deYed the might of the Crown longer than anyone could have reasonably expected. They were scattered, outnumbered and outresourced, with no real unifying Ygure after the death of Earl Simon, and suered a number of heavy defeats. Despite all their problems and setbacks, they succeeded in forcing the king into a compromise. The Dictum of Kenilworth, published in 1266, acknowledged that Henry 46
WIN A COPY could not hope to defeat the Disinherited via military force alone. The purely military aspects of the revolt, including eective use of guerilla-type warfare and major actions such as the battle of ChesterYeld, the siege of Kenilworth and the capture of London, will all be featured. Charismatic rebel leaders such as Robert de Ferrers, the 'wild and Xighty' Earl of Derby, Sir John de Eyvill, 'the bold D'Eyvill' and others such as Sir Adam de Gurdon, David of Uangton and Baldwin Wake all receive a proper appraisal. About the Author David Pilling is a selfemployed author and historian based in West Wales, where he was raised on a smallholding. As a child he acquired a love for the Welsh countryside and Welsh history, especially the medieval era. His particular interests lie in the Edwardian wars of the late 13th century.
