Holiday Review August

Silba

4 of the best small islands in Croatia These Adriatic islets, many sparsely populated and little visited, are perfect for boat rides, great walking trails, lovely beaches and the odd bit of culture. Lopud An hour’s ferry ride from Dubrovnik, Lopud is a world away from the city’s bustle. Panoramic views take in mountains and deep-blue waters, from the surrounding Elaphiti archipelago to the Croatian mainland beyond. Just 220 year-round residents share this car-free island, which measures less than 5 sq km. A sweep of seafront promenade – with waterside restaurants, petite boutiques and ice-cream shops – traces Lopud’s northern bay. A 15-minute hike south over the hills sits Šunj Bay, a splendid and rare arc of silky sand that shelves gradually into the surf. The island truly comes into its own in the early evening, once the last daytrippers have set sail for the mainland. • Where to stay: built in the 1960s, Lafodia Sea Resort resembles a futuristic cruise ship (doubles from €80 a night B&B, lafodiahotel.com)

Silba takes R&R seriously. It’s not just car-free and hotel-free but, during July and August, to preserve the local tranquillity, its central village is also bike-free. Ruled by the Republic of Venice until the mid-19th century, this serene little speck sits an hour-and-a-half’s catamaran ride from Zadar. Life hums along in a low gear. Island activities include scaling Toreta, the panoramic viewing tower. Spend a morning skirting the northern or eastern shores’ peaceful bays on foot, seeking that perfect sunbathing and snorkelling spot. For those who can’t resist breaking into a sweat, there are beach volleyball courts on Sotorišce, Silba’s largest stretch of sand. • Where to stay: a two-bedroom, whitewashed, solar-powered house (from €134 a night, minimum four-night stay, on airbnb.com), just 30 metres from the sea in Paprenica Bay

Sveti Nikola

Šolta Sveti Nikola is Croatia’s northernmost island. Blanketed The village of Solva in pine forests and ringed by 2km of crystal-clear coastline, the petite island is uninhabited except for a hotel resort, built in 2015. But anyone can visit for the day on the – free – hourly shuttle boat from Poreč Old Town. A fragrant path loops around the island, while Blue Flag beaches include the pebble swoosh of Oliva. As the waters are a protected marine park, snorkelling is excellent; dolphins are regulars in July and August. The island was once privately owned by a Venetian trading family, who built the elegant castle and restored the 14th-century lighthouse (Croatia’s oldest), which hotel guests can tour every Sunday morning. • Where to stay: Valamar Hotel Isabella (doubles from €239 a night half-board, valamar.com)

10

Šolta may be visible from Split’s seafront promenade, but while the latter features on pretty much every tourist’s Croatia hit list, travellers to Šolta are few and far between. Their loss. Hop aboard the half-hour catamaran, then make a beeline for the pretty town of Maslinica. On the island’s western tip, this former fishing village is trimmed by a pine forest, crowned by an 18th-century castle-turned-luxury-hotel, and peeks out over an archipelago of seven islets. Foodie visitors are advised to leave space in their suitcases: the farms scattered across Šolta press their own extra virgin Levantinka olive oil, harvest grapes for the local Dobričić wine, or sell wildflower honey. • Where to stay: seafront Villa Berg has two spacious apartments (from €70 a night, villaberg.eu), each with private balconies and uninterrupted Adriatic view

Some 89 tiny islands make up the Kornati archipelago, a national park just south of Zadar. Covered by sage, olive and fig trees, main island Kornat’s land is strictly protected, as are its waters. Sailors are charged a steep fee to visit (from €32 a day, depending on the size of the boat); there are just nine zones where organised scuba diving is permitted. But for visitors seeking sun, sea and silence, plus hiking trails and knockout snorkelling, there are few better getaways. In keeping with its isolated aura, Kornat boasts just a handful of private homes available to rent. • Where to stay: three-bedroom Kuća Antonia (from €130 a night for a maximum party of six, kornati-kravljacica.com) is steps from the sea. The house has a small boat (€30 a day) and a barbecue. Return transfer from the mainland €200 per party

AUGUST ........................................ Angela Nilsen has been on a mission to make the not-so-innocent Caesar salad more honest. The result? A healthier and tastier version. So tuck in

1. Marinate the chicken. Mix the lemon juice, oil, thyme and garlic in a shallow dish. Add the chicken and turn it over in the marinade to coat well. Season with freshly ground pepper and leave for up to 2 hrs. 2. Heat the oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6. Slice, then cut the bread into big, rough cubes for the croutons. Spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet, then brush all over with the 2 tbsp oil. Bake for about 10 mins until golden and crisp. 3. Meanwhile, put the garlic into a mini blender with the mustard, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, chilli and anchovies. Blend until smooth, add the mayonnaise and yogurt, then blend again – it should be the consistency of double cream. Adjust the taste with lemon juice and pepper. If necessary, thin with a couple of tsps of cold water to get the consistency right so it will coat the leaves. 4. Heat a griddle pan until very hot. Lay the chicken on the griddle, on the side that had the skin on. Cook for 15-16 mins, turning once or twice, until cooked through. Remove, then let the meat sit for 5 mins before slicing. 5. Keep any small inner lettuce leaves whole, tear the larger outer leaves into 2-3 pieces, then put them all into a large bowl with the rocket or watercress. Pour just under half the dressing over the leaves and carefully toss to coat – it’s gentler to use your hands. Either assemble in the bowl, or pile the leaves onto individual plates, tucking in the croutons, chicken and Parmesan. Drizzle the rest of the dressing over and around, then finish with an extra squeeze of lemon.

1½ tbsp lemon juice 1 tbsp olive oil 2 tsp fresh thyme leaves, plus a few sprig 1 garlic clove, bashed to bruise 4 organic/free-range skinless boneless c chicken breast fillets, about 140g/5oz each 100g rustic granary bread 2 tbsp olive oil 1 garlic clove, finely chopped 1 tsp Dijon mustard ½ tsp Worcestershire sauce 1 tbsp lemon juice, plus extra for squeezing good pinch chilli flakes 4 anchovies fillets, finely chopped 3 tbsp good-quality mayonnaise 4 tbsp fat-free yogurt 1 head romaine or Cos lettuce, leaves separated, washed and dried 100g bag rocket or watercress 25g piece parmesan shaved with a potato peeler

MOTORING REVIEW

AUGUST

By Chris Knapman

2017 Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport: Is it a premium car to match Audi, BMW and Mercedes? With an increasing number of buyers opting for SUVs and the more prestigious German brands, sales of traditional large family cars from mainstream manufacturers have suffered. That hasn’t stopped Vauxhall from designing an all-new version of its Insignia, now called the Insignia Grand Sport, to not only compete against the Ford Mondeos and Volkswagen Passats of this world, but perhaps even tempt buyers away from the BMW 3-series and Audi A4. That the Insignia Grand Sport looks like good value on paper is no surprise. The question is whether it can offer the kind of premium build quality, smooth petrol and diesel engines and excellent handling that will entice buyers. Space 8/10 Good for passengers, but boot can’t match the best The Insignia Grand Sport is a larger car than the model it replaces, but a Skoda Superb, Ford Mondeo and Volkswagen Passat still have significantly larger boots. The Vauxhall also misses out on any underfloor storage, but the remote rear seat folding mechanism is neat and leaves only a small ridge in the floor to negotiate. Space for rear seat passengers is impressive, with ample legroom and headroom, plus you can fit three adults side-by-side without too much trouble.

Comfort 7/10 Great on the motorway Cars such as the Insignia have traditionally been popular with fleets where drivers spend much of their time on the motorway. No surprise then that the Grand Sport excels as a long-distance machine thanks to its comfortable seats, quiet engines (the 1.6 is particularly smooth for a diesel) and compliant suspension. There’s enough seat and steering wheel adjustment for even the tallest of drivers to get comfortable, and at a 70mph cruise on a perfectly surfaced road the only noise to be heard is of the wind passing over the wing mirrors. Throw in a coarse road surface, however, and there is noticeable tyre roar to contend with. Vauxhall offers the Grand Sport with wheels up to 20 inches in diameter, but so far we’ve only tried it with 17-inch rims and with the standard suspension rather than the more advanced Flexride system which allows you to adjust the firmness of the ride. Thus equipped the Grand Sport is generally a smooth car but will still thump over potholes that wouldn’t phase a Ford Mondeo. Dashboard layout 7/10

This Vauxhall feels equally vast in the front, with plenty of elbow room and practical storage spaces that include large door bins.

Vauxhall would no doubt like you to believe that the German-built Insignia Grand Sport has the same premium level of materials as any Audi, BMW or Mercedes, but while it certainly feels well screwed together there are still plenty of hard black plastics in -

16

evidence. What’s more, even those areas that are more pleasing to touch still look quite cheap, and the buttons don’t have a particularly smoothly damped action. That said, it is still a cut above the Ford Mondeo’s dashboard, plus Vauxhall’s central touchscreen system works well, allowing you to flick between the built-in satnav and Apple CarPlay (which along with Android Auto is included on every model) without a problem. The Insignia Grand Sport can also be ordered with an excellent head-up display that projects information such as the car’s speed or satnav directions on to the windscreen, and the optional TFT digital dial display also works well.

offer 7- and 5-year warranties respectively on their Optima and i40. Affordability 9/10 Keen pricing is sure to appeal The Insignia has always been one of the more affordable models in its segment, so the brand’s decision to make the latest Grand Sport even cheaper than its predecessor is a nice surprise. The range in fact starts at about £6,000 less than the VW Passat, and even compared with an entry-level Ford Mondeo or Kia Optima the Insignia is about £4,000 cheaper.

Reliability 8/10 Vauxhall’s record is good, but warranty could be better Vauxhall put in a strong performance in the 2016 JD Power UK Vehicle Dependability study, finishing 4th out of 24 manufacturers, behind only Skoda, Suzuki and Kia. The three-year, 60,000-mile warranty might look OK alongside a Volkswagen Passat, but there’s no escaping that Kia and Hyundai

natural world – this festival is one of a kind. This week, The Good Life Experience announced its return to North Wales for the three day event which runs from 15-17 September, just 10 minutes from Chester at the Hawarden Estate. Now in its fourth year, this weekend of discovery is the brainchild of Cerys Matthews MBE and her co-founders. Fans of her Sunday BBC 6 Music radio show, the most listened to digital only show in the UK, will recognise a similarly wide reaching and all-inclusive programme. All performers and contributors are hand-picked with passion and expertise in mind rather than hype. Interestingly, there are no VIP areas at this festival; it is one of the friendliest festivals on the circuit, inviting guests to be part of the story and you can be sure to see the performers mingling with everyone else enjoying the atmosphere. Co-founder Charlie Gladstone believes that quality is king: “The founders focus on absolute excellence across the weekend, making sure that they select every single thing on site personally, from the gin to the blacksmith, from the rope makers to the headliner performers.” This year’s line up includes Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen, BBC Wildlife presenter Kate Humble, songwriter Michael Head, Masterchef winner and Wahaca founder Thomasina Miers, Roger Phillips, the world’s leading mushroom expert, and author Frank Cottrell-Boyce. Sunday Times columnist and writer India Knight also joins the bill this year to talk about her love of dogs. (Shelter also runs a very popular fundraising dog show; no tickets required by hounds at this festival!) The Good Life Experience invites over 40 makers to show their wares and give demonstrations/classes, making this the first festival to fully recognise and embrace the renaissance of artisan makers. These international makers include Manhattan axe makers Best Made Co, Australia’s Motorbike specialists Deus ex Machina, London publishers The Do Book Company, Northumbria’s Hepple Gin, Brecon’s Hang Fire Smokehouse, Sheffield’s acclaimed knife maker Michael May and the renowned Earl of East London candle

value for money is high on the agenda in this independent fairground, the vast majority of activities are free on entry, with children under 12 coming in for free, too. Great news for young families – they can still get out to a festival, just with family in tow! Matthews added: “Value to me is not measured in terms of material wealth but in experiences. We started the Good Life Experience so that memories can be made, whether that’s climbing a 100 year old oak tree or discovering a new act.” There will be strict meter bardic poetry (cynghannedd) workshops run by Gwyneth Glyn and Twm Morys, cider making, authentic Appalachian country dance lessons, abseiling, axe throwing, foraging, forging, bow and arrow making, fermenting, wild swimming in the estate’s remote, protected lake and endless other workshops, talks, classes and demonstrations. People of all ages and all sensibilities can, if they’re so inclined, try their hand at a new skill or experience. The Idler runs a full programme in its tent on site, including music lessons and writing workshops. Caught by the River welcomes artists such as Amber Arcades, Joan Shelley, Jeb Loy Nichols, Pictish Trail and Michael Chapman. The Dylan Thomas Mobile Book Shop returns with its unmatched collection of miscellanea and vintage literary goodness. The Do Book Company hosts the Do Tent. Founders Clare and David Hieatt set out to bring the Do-ers of the world together -the movers and shakers, the disrupters and the change-makers- and ask them to tell their stories, to inspire others to go out into the world and DO, too. Five of their authors will speak and give master classes. And in the Speakeasy, Ale House and Main Stage expect performers who excel live; great craftsmen and players from across the genres handpicked by Cerys. This year they include Kansas Smitty’s House Band, Baloji, EZZA, Les Hommes, Orchestre du Montplaisant, Jalen N’Gonda, Trembling Bells, Norman Jay MBE, The Little Orchestra performing Beethoven’s groundbreaking ‘Eroica’Symphony, poet Mike Garry with a string quartet and Poet

Food Review By Inside Flintshire Magazine

The Black Lion Babell 01352 721008

This month’s food review led us to The Black Lion Inn a picturesque, 13th Century Inn which is nestled in the beautiful Flintshire countryside with views of Snowdonia and sweeping countryside. The Black Lion at Babell combines country pub, fine dining, with a added twist of contemporary creativity and flair to create the perfect setting for a memorable “good ‘ole time” experience. The atmosphere and ambience when you walk in shines through with locals enjoying a Sunday pint to people who have heard the reputation of the fine food in which they use the philosophy of using simple whole produce sourced locally. The Black Lion also has a reputation for a more sinister side too as there have been many unexplained sightings and strange happenings over the years, some with links to the famous composer Liszt who even has a room at the inn dedicated to his memory. Legend has it that the panelling and wood carvings on the walls actually come from the composer’s home but enough about this as we were more interested in sampling the food and what better way than a traditional Sunday roast. We skipped starters and dived straight in for the main event. A roast dinner should never stray too far away from its classic roots. Everybody wants some succulent pink in the middle meat, beside crunchy roast potatoes and a bountiful array of fresh vegetables. Thankfully, The Black Lion succeeds in hitting most 24

those markers. The roast beef was excellent value – large slices of meat that are generously cut from the joint, whilst the honey roast ham was succulent and full of flavour – the latter is something that can dissipate quickly should it be overcooked but it was cooked to perfection. The roast potatoes were well seasoned and crispy, the Yorkshire puds were perfect light and fluffy and brimming over the plate with lashings of homemade gravy, if we could have one slight criticism it would be there was only two varieties of vegetables which was mashed carrots and peas I personally like cauliflower cheese or sautéed red cabbage which would round the roast off perfectly and definitely make it perfect. As we had skipped starters, dessert was a must, especially when we both saw homemade Bailey’s cheesecake on the menu…… how could we possibly resist? The cheesecake looked incredible, it had a thick buttery base topped with double thickness creamy cheese with a sweet liqueur flavour throughout then drizzled with chocolate sauce and decorated with a generous chunk of Crispello on the side. It definitely tasted as good as it looked and we would absolutely recommend dining in the Black Lion the service was excellent, the surroundings and views beautiful and the food first class.

Are You Ready for a Cat? Keeping a cat (or two) is a wonderfully rewarding experience. However, to be fair to the cat and to yourself, it’s important to make sure a cat is right for you and your household. Cats are wonderful companions. Although many cats are less emotionally dependent than dogs are, they still require your attention, time, money, and life-long commitment. Are you ready to bring a cat into your family for the long haul? With proper care, that kitten you’re considering can live to be old enough to vote. It is a serious, long-term decision. Why Do You Want a Cat? People bring cats into their lives for many reasons: some good, and some bad. Let’s take a look at the main ones. The Good Companionship – Cats aren’t the pack animals that dogs are, but they are still very social creatures. Cats bring a lot of love into a home, and there are few joys that rival reading a good book while a cat sleeps on your lap. Health – Living with a pet is good for you. It lowers blood pressure, encourages activity, and gives you a reason to get up in the morning. If this is your only reason for adopting a pet, however, consider starting a dog-walking business instead. It will be better for everyone involved. The Bad Impulse – Sometimes a stray decides to move in, and there’s nothing wrong with that as long as you are able to take the animal in at the time. Otherwise, avoid adopting any animal on the spur of the moment. Too often, those cute faces at the pet store end up abandoned as soon as the kitty enters adolescence. Children – If your reason for getting a cat is either the pleading of one or more of your children, or to teach your children to take care of something, please hold off and reconsider. You will be the primary care-giver for any pet, no matter how many promises your six-yearold makes. If you don’t want to be responsible for an animal, yourself, don’t get a cat.

“Easier than a Dog” – Cat care is less work than dog care, overall, it’s true. However, cats need more attention and work than most people realise. The truth may seem obvious to you, but some people think that cats don’t need to be fed regularly because they are mousers (farm mousers and ship’s cats are more effective in their duties if they are well fed), that veterinary check-ups are unnecessary (“wellness checks” should be scheduled every six months), and that a cat will be fine on its own for a few days if the owner goes away (in most cases, the animal will panic). If you’re thinking of a cat just because cat care is easy, please, please, please buy a plush toy at the toystore instead. Are You Ready to Live With a Cat? You will be taking on a number of commitments if you bring a cat into your home. Money – A good rule of thumb when thinking of adding any pet to the household is: If you need to think about how much the animal costs, you can’t afford to take care of it. Cats need regular veterinary care on top of the kittenhood deworming, de-sexing, and vaccinations. The costs of catfood, toys, litter, cleaning products, scratching posts, pet carrier, bedding, and parasite control will add up quickly. Time and attention – The idea that cats are solitary is a myth. Pet cats need your attention and playtime. Unlike many animals, cats can adjust their schedules day or night to fit yours, which makes it easier to give them attention even if you have a busy workday. Can you devote an hour a day to playing and cuddling? Yes? You’re good to go. Space – A pet cat doesn’t need much room to be healthy, it’s true. Cat-trees extend the territory upward, allowing an active indoors-only cat to exercise and play in the smallest loft apartments and recreational vehicles. You will need to figure out how to fit the cat-trees and litter pan in your house, but it can be done. Part 2 next month

Cleaning Your Garden Furniture

Your garden furniture might be looking a bit shabby, but don’t give up on it just yet. It can take just one afternoon to transform it from lacklustre to lovely. It’s satisfying and simple to do, and means you don’t need to splash out on anything new, potentially saving yourself hundreds of pounds. Our guide looks at different types of furniture, and explains how to clean them without causing damage. We’ve also got some great tips on how to restore garden furniture, whether it’s a rusty wrought iron table or weathered teak chairs. How to clean and restore wooden garden furniture This can be left in the garden all year round, although it will weather to a silvery grey finish. To clean it after a long winter, first remove all the excess dirt, dust and cobwebs that have built up with a stiff bristle brush. If your hardwood furniture is a few years old and has silvered with age, you can restore it to its original colour by using a specialist product like like Cuprinol’s Garden Furniture Restorer. Paint it on and the wood will start to lighten in colour. Work it into the wood with an abrasive pad, leave it to work its magic for 15 minutes, then wash off. If you haven’t applied a restorer, your next job is to clean your furniture with soapy water. Rinse and dry it thoroughly, and lightly sand the surfaces to remove any weathered areas. Now it’s time to protect your wood. This should be done every season. Teak oil will shield your hardwood furniture from the elements and keep it looking new. Using a rag, apply the oil, rubbing it in gently and following the grain. You can add more than one coat of oil, but make sure the first one dries completely before you apply the next. How to clean plastic garden furniture Plastic garden furniture is weather-proof but can discolour, so it’s best to store it in an outbuilding or shed over winter. If your shed has windows, make sure the furniture is covered with dust sheets so that the sunshine can’t bleach the colour. When you’re ready to use your furniture, wash it down with hot, soapy water with a splash of bleach in it to get rid of any dirt or stubborn stains. Use a sponge rather than anything abrasive, so as not to scratch or mark the surface, and rinse thoroughly before the furniture dries. Finally, add a protective layer of clear car wax. Wrought-iron tables and chairs can live outside all year round, but are prone to rust. You can keep them in tiptop condition by refreshing the paintwork with a specialist paint. Before painting, rub off any rust with wire wool, but go gently. Brush off any loose dirt that will otherwise pit the surface of the paint once it has dried. Scrub everything down with soapy water, then sand and touch up rust spots using enamel paint. If you’re feeling lazy, Hammerite’s Direct to Rust Metal Paint can be painted straight onto the rust.

How to clean aluminum garden furniture Aluminium furniture can stay outdoors, but it may oxidise over time. If you don’t have anywhere to store it inside, consider investing in outdoor furniture covers. Garden4less sell a wide range of PVC-backed polyester covers which will keep your furniture protected from the elements, and even have UV-filters built in to prevent sun bleaching. Remove scuff marks with a non-abrasive cleaner, wash with – yes, you’ve guessed it – soapy water, and rinse off with a hose. Protect the surface with a little clear car wax. How to clean all-weather weaves These can be left outdoors, but remove the cushions and cover as autumn sets in. Dust with a dry brush, then clean your furniture with a non-foaming detergent, as any residue can cause mildew to build up. Rinse each piece well using either a hose or a pressure washer on its lowest setting. Either will be powerful enough to blast any pesky residual detergent or dirt out from the weave.

Teenage Tips!!!! Its the summer holidays already which means even more of socialising to do with summer approaching, if your out in town all day or you have been invited to a party then you will need your makeup to stay put, be careful though,an orange face and panda eyes are not a good look so lets get it sorted!!!!! If you don't have much confidence applying eye shadows with out making a mess then its good idea to do your eye makeup first before you apply your foundation, this way you can easily mop up any mistakes and wont have to start everything all over again!!! Crease-resistant eye shadows in velvety textures glide onto the skin and need minimum maintenance. However, you may prefer to stick to eye pencil or eyeliner instead. Once your eyes are finished apply a translucent make up base, use a liquid, allow to dry a little, if you find you don't have enough coverage then apply a second coat, if the colour of your foundation is right then this should blend perfectly with your skin tone, but remember less is more and its more than likely just imperfections you are trying to cover up,if that!!!! Press on some loose powder, fluff off excess with a brush and this will set the foundation in place and you should stay shine-free all day. If you are suffering with spots and blemishes that wont disappear with foundation then you might want to try a little concealer, I would recommend applying it over foundation so you can control how it looks, if its applied under foundation and its too much then its too late to remove it as you have already set your foundation over the top. Applying concealer with a small, firm brush gives an even finish and allows you to get into tiny corners. Choose a concealer that is formulated especially for certain areas, some will contain skin-smoothing and moisturising ingredients. Concealers designed for blemishes tend to have a drier texture. Use a lip pencil to line your lips and then fill in the rest of the lips with the same pencil, next apply a lipstick that is designed to hang on in there for as long as you do. Long-lasting lipsticks often contain a lip stain called eosin to give colour that will last for hours at a time. Use a waterproof mascara and double layer it for fullness, but do this quickly, if its let to dry between coats it will drag and start to become flaky. *remember, less is more.... and before you collapse into bed, remove your make-up or you may end up with spots and blemishes the next day, prevention is better than cure!

Beautiful Summer Nails

For hands you want to show off with pride this summer, daily care is required to strengthen, maintain and protect them, If your nails are prone to peeling or flaking, avoid growing them too long. Cut them square and quite short to begin with and file them every other day to ensure no jagged edges appear as this may result in breaks and tears. Massage them every night with a special cream or oil for nails and cuticles, this not only puts nutrients back in but when applying it also helps to increase circulation underneath the nail plate encouraging growth. you need to look after your cuticles regularly, these little bits of skin that protect the base of the nail get torn easily if they get too dry and dehydrated, after you have massaged your nails with special cuticle cream or oil, gently push them back with a cuticle hoof or stick. Polish them as much as you can, not only does it look good but it will help support weak nails, dont forget though, before polishing apply a protective base coat, this will smooth out any ridges and prevent any nail staining from your polish. Twice polished seal your colour with a clear top coat to give a high shine and to help prevent chips and provide an extra defense for your manicure. Look out for nail enamels that contain calcium, panthenol and polyacrylics, all of these will give your polish added resilience. *Dont forget those toes need tlc too, if your not keen on your toes then apply dark colours, this with distract the eye from any imperfections!!! August Sultry late summer

August is usually one of the hottest months of the year making watering essential. Try to use grey water wherever possible, especially as water butts may be running low if it has been a dry summer. August is traditionally holiday-time, so you might need to enlist the help of friends and family to look after the garden while you are away. When you are at home, take the time to prune summer-flowering shrubs.

Flowers

Towards the end of August sow hardy annuals directly into borders. They will overwinter and flower next summer.

Cutting back, pruning and dividing

Cutting back the foliage and stems of herbaceous plants that have already died back (e.g. Dicentra) is starting to be a priority. Don't neglect hanging baskets - deadheading, watering and feeding will help them last through until autumn. Deadhead plants such as Dahlia, roses and Penstemon and bedding to prolong the display colour well into early autumn. Don't cut off the flowerheads of ornamental grasses. These will provide winter interest. Hardy geraniums can be cut back a little to remove tired leaves and encourage a new flush of growth. Prune climbing and rambling roses that do not repeat flower or produce attractive hips, once the flowers have finished.

Lawns

freshly mown lawnRaise the blades on the mower before cutting fine lawns. This will help reduce drought stress. Mow lightly and frequently so that short grass clippings can remain on the lawn during hot summers to act as a moisture-retentive mulch. Excess thatch can be scarified out during autumn maintenance next month. Mulching mowers cut the clippings even finer than normal rotary blades, making the mulch less visible. Lawns on thin soils may benefit from a high phosphate feed. This will strengthen the roots for winter, rather than encouraging lush top growth that could suffer in the cold and weaken the grass. Avoid using lawn weedkillers in late summer - they will be more effective in the cooler, damper autumn weather.

Ponds

Removing blanket weed from a pondKeep an eye on aquatic and marginal plants, removing faded flowers and yellow leaves, and cutting back where necessary. Top up water where necessary in ponds and water features. Aerate the water in hot sticky weather by leaving fountains on overnight. Continue to remove blanket weed and duckweed using a net or rake. Shallow water features or those with water washing over cobbles can become green very quickly in summer weather. Algicides may need applying more frequently than in normal ponds.

Pest and disease watch

Inspect chrysanthemums for the first signs of white rust and take immediate action. Remove and destroy any Nicotiana showing signs of downy mildew. This shows up as yellowish blotches on the upper surface of the leaves. Powdery mildew can be prevalent at this time of the year. Treat with an approved chemical at the manufacturer's rates. Apply nematodes to control vine weevil grubs, in pots or the ground. Earwigs can make Dahlia blooms ragged. Set traps to reduce damage. Don't be worried by bright green, heavily-armoured looking insects on your plants - these are harmless shieldbugs which do not require control. Distortion on Phlox could indicate the presence of phlox eelworm. Discoloured leaves on herbaceous plants such as Chrysanthemum, Anemone and Penstemon may be leaf and bud eelworm.

General maintenance

Feed containers, and even tired border perennials, with a liquid tomato food each week to encourage them to bloom into the early autumn. Keep picking flowers from the cutting garden to encourage more flower buds to form and open.

Deadhead Plants to keep plants looking attractive and encourage more blooms

The Crocky Trail We have lived in Chester over 15 years and often driven past the Crocky Trail and wondered what it was like. If anyone is thinking that it is a kids only attraction – you are wrong! This place is definitely not just for children, but for all ages. If you want friendly staff, some amazing slides which give you butterflies as you go down them, and want to be surrounded by laughter, giggles and shouts of ‘Where do we go next?’ this is the place for you. We tried it out during the week, on a nice dry day; although from what I’ve heard it is even more fun on the rainy days with mud aplenty! From the moment we arrived we had great fun on the slides and other rides, which were all well supervised. The slides, swings and bridges may look a bit rough and ready, but hey you’re not going to Alton Towers and instead you are getting a fantastic outdoor activity; just what a lot of kids are missing. It is all based on the principle of slides, balancing, swinging and climbing and the various rides and obstacles are interesting and inventive....... and all brilliant! The trail itself is great fun – although old clothes and suitable footwear are definitely a must! Think of it as a lovely walk in the countryside, but one where you have to swing 60

or balance or dare to walk over wobbly bridges to cross a stream. Around the trail there are puzzles to complete, swings to ring the bell, mechanical rides - so the kids are never bored. All followed by tunnels to crawl through, tree trunks to cross, and mazes to complete. We saw children, teenagers and adults (even a granny!) all thoroughly enjoying their day. You can pick and choose your crossing methods, and most tricky crossings were closely accompanied by more manageable ones. The balance of activities round the trail was just right to keep kids encouraged onwards on what, for many kids, would be a longish walk. Our 2 year old tried almost everything that she could reach but avoided the harder bridges and was ably helped along by daddy. Some of the attractions were manned by staff while others are do it yourself jobs! A massive plus side for us was the fact it is not too commercial. There is a big picnic area and the facilities are clean and tidy. We loved the picnic tables randomly dotted – even some in tree houses. There is a reasonably priced café, and if we had older children you could easily stop off for a lunch break and do the whole trail again; so really it is good value for money. The Crocky Trail is more geared for children over 5, but they have introduced a new ‘Wonderland’ play area which is especially for the under 5s – making it ideal for all the family. It is

fairly accessible, but you do have to remember that it is an active outdoors attraction on farmland. We took our buggy and 8 month old in a carrier and had no problems getting around. Basically there is nothing else like this that I’ve heard of, and our visit has certainly whetted our appetite to return again and again – especially when the children are older or when their cousins are visiting. You can visit in all weathers, great for the typical British summertime, and children love it when it rains and they can have even more fun in the mud! Top tips for your visit: Remember to wear old clothes and even pack some spare clothes. I would also take your own picnic and take advantage of the varied picnic spots, and remember to pack some drinks – it’s definitely thirsty work!
