PRIZE

WIN two tickets to see

COMPETITIONS

Saturday September 14, 2019 Boyzlife brings together members of two of the biggest boybands in history, Boyzone and Westlife, to perform a whole host of their biggest chart hits.

at Wolverhampton - Racecourse Saturday August 31, 2019

When she looks at the statistics that have marked her skyrocketing career so far, there is a look of mild disbelief on the face of Jess Glynne, as if this might have happened to someone else. I Cry When I Laugh is one of the defining British pop records of its era. At the time of writing it has been a chart staple for 138 weeks. It debuted at number one, spawning 12million worldwide singles sales, 39 weeks on the UK top 10, 2.5billion Spotify streams, a sold out UK arena tour, Brit, MTV: EMA, Ivor Novello, MOBO, Q and Glamour award nominations. ‘I don’t write songs because I want a hit,’ she says. ‘I never have

and I never will. I want to make a great album, that’s it.’ In the event, she is delighted with first choice, I’ll Be There, a spare, thoughtful showcase for her instantly familiar, rousing vocal styling, every bit the introductory calling card Hold My Hand was back in 2015, at the beginning of Jess’s incredible pop life. Jess Glynne promises to play all the hits and fan favourites including ‘Hold My Hand’, ‘Thursday’, ‘Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself’, ‘I’ll Be There’ and ‘Take Me Home’, - plus some brand new tracks too. For an action packed day out, why not celebrate a day of racing with friends and family before dancing the night away with the delights of the fabulous Jess Glynne in concert finishing off a perfect Summer’s evening.

To win the tickets, answer the following question:

“Boyzlife play the hits from which two famous bands?

“What is jess Glynne’s new album called?

With Boyzone, Keith Duffy has enjoyed similar success, including 6 UK number one singles and 16 out of 17 of their first single releases making the Top 5. With 5 number one albums also to their credit, Boyzone achieved worldwide sales of over 25 million. The unmissable Boyzlife show has already been performed for over 20,000 adoring fans since the pair came together in 2016. With two completely sold out tours under their belts in partnership with Hilton Hotels, as well as their unforgettable 2017 December Christmas Tour, this is an evening that is certainly not to be missed.

Britain’s NEX top model H

ow we travel today is likely to be very different from how we travel in 2039. I don’t mean flying cars or selfdriving robots taking us to Snowdonia for the weekend because that’s never going to happen. Not outside of strictly controlled zones anyway. I’m talking about how we fuel the vehicles of tomorrow.

The Government and (London’s Mayor) Sadiq Khan are adamant anyone using plain old petrol and diesel should be hanged, drawn and quartered. Or at least pay the ULEZ charge. They say the future is electric. Which is fine if you live on the ground floor in a city and only do a handful of miles a day. But totally and utterly useless if you do hundreds of miles a day as you’ll need

Just press a button and go. I got the equivalent of 60mpg and a full tank costs around ÂŁ60.

Hyundai clearly knows its onions after 20 years of research, as underlined by Audi signing a deal to borrow its tech. But as well as being a pioneer, the Nexo is a nice car. Everything from the flush door handles to the bio interior to the heated steering wheel — Hyundai owners do love a heated steering wheel — feels very high end. The widescreen dash is like a flight deck. Steering wheel paddles adjust the regenerative braking and add to the driving pleasure. Flick the indicators to turn left or right and a camera feed showing your blind spot fills the driver’s binnacle. It can even park itself with you stood beside it. But there is a problem. There are only ten hydrogen charging stations in the UK and plans for just 65 by 2030. That’s pathetic. Even worse, the Government has invested a measly £23million in its

Are hydrogen cars safe? YES. Safer than petrol, say experts. Petrol burns slowly and pools around a crash site. But hydrogen is 14 times lighter than air and dissipates upwards rapidly. Hyundai has put its storage tanks through crush, bonfire, lightning and gunfire tests. The template for a pollution-free future is already up and running just off the M1 near Sheffield. It’s a hydrogen refuelling station where a wind turbine provides power for an electrolyser, which in turn splits water into hydrogen and oxygen then stores the hydrogen ready to refuel a passing car. No big trucks transporting it for miles, or burning fossil fuels to create it.

to keep stopping for a 30-minute recharge. To juice up at home today takes eight hours. For electric vehicles to work for everyone everywhere, they need to be as quick and as convenient as filling up a Fiesta now. Which is why I believe we need a multi-fuel future. Take the hydrogenpowered Hyundai Nexo you see here. That does 414 miles to a tank, refuels as quickly as petrol and emits only

air and hydrogen from three highpressure storage tanks to create a flow of electrons that powers the electric drive motor and charges the 1.56kWh battery pack. The result is a family SUV that’s safe, quiet, clean and hovercraft smooth.

It is the ultimate clean energy and supply is unlimited. Let’s see some action.

Key facts: HYUNDAI NEXO Price: ÂŁ65,995 Power: Hydrogen fuel cell Output: 163hp, 395Nm 0-62mph: 9.5 secs Top speed: 111mph Range: 414 miles CO2: 0g/km Out: Now

Hydrogen Transport Programme compared with ÂŁ14.5billion a year in foreign aid to fund studies on jazz and Roman statues. The HS2 rail link will cost ÂŁ56billion. It would be easy to sit hydrogen refuelling tanks alongside existing petrol and diesel pumps in the short term.

PRIZE

COMPETITIONS WIN a pair of tickets to see

Jess Glynne at Wolverhampton - Racecourse Saturday August 31, 2019 Following the release of her brand new album ‘Always In Between’, featuring the hits ‘I’ll Be There’ and ‘Thursday’, Jess’ first outdoor show kicks off at Doncaster Racecourse, taking place on Saturday 18th May, where the Summer will see Jess playing the racecourse grounds including Lingfield Park Resort in Surrey, finishing off at Wolverhampton - Racecourse on Saturday 31st August.

This is a gig not to be missed…

Tech talk

New innovations to look out for What are the hottest technological innovations at the moment? As it turns out some will be pretty obvious, while others might surprise you. In the following article, we’ve collated some of the most interesting and potentially revolutionary tech-innovations currently either being researched or developed.

just around the corner, it should be transformative for many aspects of our lives. Should it be achieved, it will increase the efficiency of workers and will provide reliable communication tools for companies that rely on remote workers.

Artificial intelligence

Life-enriching smart tech will change the home

AI has been on the receiving end of massive financial investment over the last few years. According to Forbes, 80% of enterprises are now investing in it or are planning to expand AI investment if they already are. This influx of money has given rise to some serious innovation in deep learning. With all this cash flowing around, many tech experts believe AI will really “come of age” within the next few years.

Lightning-speed internet The appetite for faster and faster internet connection is really pushing the technology forward. Businesses and private users are constantly demanding ever quicker response times and the industry is responding. With lightning-fast internet speeds

This is where 5G might be able to change the world as much as our “regular” internet did several decades ago. That’s if it doesn’t kill us all first, of course.

More and more of our lives are becoming integrated with smart tech. Our homes being no exception. Demand for ever better smart home appliances and home entertainment systems are changing the way we socialize. Whether for better or worse, today is just the tip of the iceberg. Current trends seem to indicate a greater demand for more control over the way we are entertained in the home from tech. One area that may be something to watch is something called flexible viewing surfaces. These promise to be able to curve around any environment will change home entertainment and advertising beyond all recognition. Watch this space.

Dextrous robots might be with us very soon Computers and robots are dumb. Very dumb indeed. If their work environment changes even slightly outside their preprogrammed procedure and the whole production line could come to a grinding halt. This is where improving robotic dexterity offers an incredible opportunity for more flexible automation. While it may be possible to programme robots to figure out how to grasp something by “looking” at it in the future, current research is trying to make them learn how to do so through a trial and error process. One example is a project called Dactyl, that has taught itself to flip a toy using it’s “fingers”.

Brain-computer interfaces are almost here Innovations like Elon Musk’s Neuralink could make the mouse and keyboard obsolete in the future. Work in this area is continuing apace and promises to allow us to control computers just by thinking. We’ll let you decide if this will be revolutionary or not to you working and daily life.

More next month...

Recipe

Eclairs Fabulously light choux pastry filled with cream and topped with chocolate - our easy éclair recipe is the stuff of Parisian dreams.

Method 1 Preheat the oven to 200°C, fan 180°C, gas 6. 2 Sieve the flour onto a small piece of baking parchment. Gently heat the butter in a small pan with 150ml cold water, until the butter has melted, then bring to the boil.

Once the mixture reaches boiling point, remove immediately from the heat and tip in the flour all at once. Beat with a wooden spoon until the mixture forms a smooth ball, then leave to cool completely.

fan 200°C, gas 7 and bake for a further 15 minutes. Remove and cool on a wire rack. Using a sharp knife, carefully make a small cut in the side of each éclair to allow the steam to escape.

3 Using an electric hand mixer, beat the eggs into the mixture a little at a time, mixing thoroughly between each addition, until you get a smooth, glossy paste.

5 To make the filling, whisk the cream until soft peaks form. Sift in the icing sugar into the bowl and fold through. Spoon into a piping bag fitted with a 1cm nozzle and fill each éclair using the opening made earlier.

4 Spoon into a piping bag fitted with a plain 1.5cm nozzle. Pipe 8 éclairs onto a non-stick baking sheet, leaving a gap between each one. Bake for 10 minutes, then increase the heat to 220°C,

6 Melt the chocolate and butter together in a small bowl in the microwave or in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering hot water. Leave to cool slightly, until it forms a thick, coating consistency, and then spoon over the éclairs and leave to set.

Ingredients l 60g British plain flour, preferably strong plain flour l 250g unsalted butter, cut into pieces l 2 large British free-range eggs, beaten l 300ml fresh double cream l 100g Fairtrade smooth dark chocolate l 25g unsalted butter ketchup and 1 tbsp sriracha chilli sauce l 1 tbsp icing sugar

Family bathroom ideas that work! A hard working family bathroom really has to be all things for all people. Not only does it have to cope with you and your family for now it will also have to be equipped to deal with guests and any new family members that may come along. It’s important to get right from the start so now is the time to think about making the most of what you have and possibly stealing space from elsewhere to make the new room future-proof. Get your bathroom design just right and you will be able to create a space that the kids can enjoy, before transforming into a relaxing haven where you can chill out and find a little calm after the storm.

Fit in a bath

If there’s room, a bath really is a must for a busy family, particularly those with smaller children. Not having one can also put off potential buyers if you plan to sell in the future. If you have the space, a shower enclosure will be a great addition for those mornings when there’s just not time for a soak. If you’re pushed for space a good solution is an over-bath shower. L- or d-shaped baths with a wider end and glass shower screen are a good choice here as they’ll look more streamlined

42

from the start is important. Avoid bottles, bags and brushes cluttering up surfaces by adding cupboards in the shape of vanity units below the sink, hanging cabinet mirrors and fitting shelves where you can. In a smaller room, glass shelves will help to create a sense of space and slim freestanding furniture will ensure you still see plenty of floor, so the room doesn’t start to feel overcrowded.

Keep it illuminated than an ordinary bath with a plastic curtain. Placing taps in the centre of the bath will ensure there are no arguments about who gets the tap end at bathtime, while a shower mixer tap will make hair washing a breeze.

Supersize it!

In a family bathroom, there will be times when several members are gathered around the basin so the bigger the better is the rule. Try a vanity unit topped with a large trough-like bowl and plenty of surface area to either side for toiletries and toothbrushes. Double basins are a great solution for early morning rush hour, although make sure there’s enough space between them for everyone to fit in.

Fit in plenty of storage

A family bathroom that’s used by lots of people can easily become messy, so making sure you have plenty of storage

Good task lighting above the sink is great for early mornings so think about where you place your spotlights or hang a glass mirror with integral lighting. For relaxing me-time baths, a gentler light is called for so consider placing your lights on a dimmer switch so you can have just the illumination you want. Candles are great for long soaks but make sure there’s a safe and stable surface on which to put them.

Fit in plenty of storage

A family bathroom that’s used by lots of people can easily become messy, so making sure you have plenty of storage from the start is important. Avoid bottles, bags and brushes cluttering up surfaces by adding cupboards in the shape of vanity units below the sink, hanging cabinet mirrors and fitting shelves where you can. In a smaller room, glass shelves will help to create a sense of space and slim freestanding furniture will ensure you still see plenty of floor.

The best metabolism-boosting foods

T

Certain foods can increase your metabolism. The higher your metabolism, the more calories you burn and the easier it is to maintain your weight or get rid of unwanted body fat. Here are eight foods that rev up your metabolism, which may help you lose weight.

Protein-rich foods Protein-rich foods, such as meat, fish, eggs, dairy, legumes, nuts and seeds, could help increase your metabolism for a few hours. They do so by requiring your body to use more energy to digest them. Protein-rich diets also reduce the drop in metabolism often seen during weight loss by helping your body hold on to its muscle mass. What’s more, protein may also help keep you fuller for longer, which can prevent overeating

Iron, zinc and seleniumrich foods Iron, zinc and selenium each play different but equally important roles in the proper function of your body. However, they do have one thing in common: all three are required for the proper function of your thyroid gland, which regulates your metabolism. Research shows that a diet too low in iron, zinc or selenium may reduce the ability of your thyroid gland to produce sufficient amounts of hormones. This can slow down your metabolism.

Chili peppers Capsaicin, a chemical found in chili peppers, may boost your metabolism by increasing the number of calories and fat you burn.

Legumes and pulses

Legumes and pulses, such as lentils, peas, chickpeas, beans and peanuts, are particularly high in protein compared to other plant foods. Studies suggest that their high protein content requires your body to burn a greater number of calories to digest them, compared to lower-protein foods. Legumes are also high in arginine, an amino acid that may increase the amount of carbs and fat your body can burn for energy.

Metabolism-boosting spices Certain spices are thought to have particularly beneficial metabolismboosting properties. For instance, research shows that dissolving 2 grams of ginger powder in hot water and drinking it with a meal may help you burn up to 43 more calories than drinking hot water alone. Similarly, adding cayenne pepper to your meal may increase the amount of fat your body burns for energy, especially following a high-fat meal.

Cacao Cacao and cocoa are tasty treats that may also benefit your metabolism. For instance, studies in mice found that cocoa and cocoa extracts may promote the expression of genes that stimulate the use of fat for energy.

Apple cider vinegar Several animal studies have shown vinegar to be particularly helpful in increasing the amount of fat burned for energy. Vinegar prompts an increase in the AMPK enzyme, which prompts the body to decrease fat storage and increase fat burning.

In fact, a review of 20 research studies reports that capsaicin can help your body burn around 50 extra calories per day.

Coconut oil

According to a recent study, consuming 2 mg of capsaicin directly before each meal seems to reduce the number of calories consumed, especially from carbs.

That may be partly because coconut oil is high in medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) which go directly to the liver to be turned into energy. This makes them less likely to be stored as fat.

46

Coconut oil is experiencing a surge in popularity.

August Horoscopes Aries (March 21-April 19)

You will be dealing with a lot of money-related issues during this period and your horoscope predictions suggest that any financial speculations you make will be fruitful, though you will not indulge in impulsive spending; rather, you will be taking a more measured and careful approach to your finances.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

You are going to experience a certain amount of fulfillment where your career is concerned and much satisfaction will be gained from doing well and achieving your goals. Others will seek you out for advice which they will follow and you could find yourself becoming a bit of a guru in the workplace.

Gemini (May 21- June 20)

Gemini charts show you may need to slow down and take more care of your health. You may also need time to de-stress and get away from the workplace. A few hours of relaxation, especially at weekends, could be of great benefit to you.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

This could be a profitable period for Cancerians. You will be confident enough to take risks, and if you make investments this month, they may prove profitable in the future. An approach to your bosses about a pay rise may prove more successful than it has previously.

Leo (July 23-August 22)

Your patience could well be put to the test. There could be a situation where you will need to forgive and forget, rather than harping on about something that has irritated you. Your emotions may be up and down but mentally you will remain strong and able to deal with whatever may happen.

Virgo (August 23-September 22)

If you are tempted to overspend, try to resist the urge. This is likely to be a very social period in your calendar and you may need to watch any potential strain on your finances. You will be in great demand on the social circuit and others will seek out your company.

Libra (September 23-October 22)

You could find yourself in a quiet and reflective mood and feel a bit down and dejected. It may be that you are struggling with the pace of your life at the moment so be mindful that life doesn’t always have to go at a hundred miles an hour.

Scorpio (October 23-November 21)

Your finances will be in great shape during this phase and there could be an influx of money which you didn’t know was coming. This will mean that you can fulfill some of your wishes or desires. It could be a lucky time for you in all aspects of your financial dealings, so don’t hold back!

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)

You may feel a bit fragile - whether this is due to stress at work, family problems or simply that your work/life balance is off-kilter. In any case, Sagittarians could find alternative therapies very helpful, especially when symptoms like tiredness, headaches and indigestion are vague annoyances.

Capricorn (December 22-January 19)

Capricorns may see the need to sort out minor issues in personal relationships. It would be beneficial to all concerned if both parties could listen to the other and act directly and quickly upon what has been said. You may need to curb their idealism and learn to be more practical in their relationships.

Aquarius (January 20-February 18)

This is likely to be a spiritual phase for Aquarians where you will be in a reflective and contemplative mood. It is entirely likely that stepping back from the business in your life will make you spiritually stronger. Don’t feel guilty about taking time out to relax.

Pisces (February 19-March 20)

Life may slow down for Pisces folk, offering some welcome rest from the recent whirl of activity, giving you time to spend with family and close friends. It is a time for quiet reflection, recovery and an ideal time to re-charge your batteries.

I got the equivalent of 60mpg and a full tank costs around £60.

Motoring water. No CO². No NOx. Just H²O. And it looks like a normal car, not a washing machine with windscreen wipers. Hydrogen is also the solution for our buses, trucks and trains. Now I’ll try to keep this simple. The Nexo uses a fuel cell system which combines oxygen from the surrounding

Even worse, the Government has invested a measly £23million in its

to keep stopping for a 30-minute recharge.

54

air and hydrogen from three highpressure storage tanks to create a flow of electrons that powers the electric drive motor and charges the 1.56kWh battery pack. The result is a family SUV that’s safe, quiet, clean and hovercraft smooth.

Hydrogen Transport Programme compared with £14.5billion a year in foreign aid to fund studies on jazz and Roman statues. The HS2 rail link will cost £56billion. It would be easy to sit hydrogen refuelling tanks alongside existing petrol and diesel pumps in the short term.

It is the ultimate clean energy and supply is unlimited. Let’s see some action.

Garden decking ideas If you’re looking to carve out a zone for al-fresco dining, a welldesigned and covered decking space or roof terrace can offer an all-year-round option, making the outside as comfortable and personalised as indoors. There’s a wealth of garden decking options to suit your lifestyle, budget and taste. You can opt for attractive wood, create imaginative patterns or go environmentally friendly with plastic- and wood-waste blends. Slip-resistant finishes are vital with our often-damp British weather, too.

Cover your decking with a glazed pergola A glazed pergola on the deck provides an alfresco entertaining area that can be used whatever the weather – we find spaces like this especially inviting in the rain, when you can hear the soothing sound of rain drops hitting the glass. Train pot-friendly climbers like honeysuckle and magnolia to cover the uprights for heady fragrance.

Make your decking weatherproof with an antislip treatment Decking plus rain can equal danger, so it’s wise to treat yours with an anti-slip

62

decking stain. A sail canopy will also keep the rain off your wood.

Lay a boardwalk Use decking to create a pathway through your garden – perhaps to a more solid decked area. This boardwalk-style route is given even more of a seaside feel with white pebbles, which help to keep weeds at bay.

Build a decked bar area This tiki bar is the star of the show in this garden, taking pride of place on a raised decked platform. It’s a good idea to lay a rug under bar stools so there’s a grippy surface to step onto after a couple of cocktails!

Level uneven ground Decking is absolutely ideal if your garden is uneven or on a slope. It’s great for levelling out awkward spaces, as it’s built on a structure. It can also have split levels and include steps. A little shelter has been built at the far end, which means that the great outdoors can be enjoyed even on the more drizzly of days.

look quite heavy in such a large garden. Architectural beds in the middle inject some greenery.

Border decking with decked seating This urban rooftop has a lot of great design elements to it, from the pale-coloured decking to the carved Buddha-style statues. A 19th-century advertisement on the wall adds character to the space, too. Raised flower beds have been cleverly designed to include beautiful greenery, while providing seating at the same time.

Build matching floating stairs Soften the hard edges of your decking with an abundance of pretty flowers and herbs that creep right up to the door. Floating steps made out of the same material as the decking create continuity between the two levels and add a note of fun by bridging the water feature below.

Mix decking with flagstones Get an ultra-modern look for your garden by mixing wooden decking with stone paving. The combination of materials provides interest and a contrast between the light and dark colours. Without the lightening effect of the stone, the wood decking would

1965

1969 1981: MTV makes its debut MTV was launched on August 1, 1981, and originally aired music videos as guided by television personalities known as “video jockeys” (VJs). Its arrival, first in the United States and then Britain, heralded the golden age of music video. At first, MTV’s main target demographic was young adults, but today it is aimed exclusively at the teenage market.

1975: Dutch Elm disease hits Britain Spread by elm bark beetles, a new, virulent strain arrived in Britain, apparently via shipments of rock elm logs from Canada destined for the small-boat industry. This was confirmed in August 1973 when a consignment was examined at Southampton Docks. This strain proved both highly contagious and lethal to European elms; more than 25 million trees died in the UK alone, while France lost over 90% of its elms.

1945: Atomic bomb hits Hiroshima During the final stage of World War II, the United States detonated two nuclear weapons over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945, respectively, with the consent of the United Kingdom, as required by the Quebec Agreement.

68

The two bombings killed 129,000226,000 people, most of whom were civilians, and remain the only use of nuclear weapons in the history of armed conflict.

1965: The Beatles release ‘Help’

Released at the height of Beatlemania on 6 August 1965 and produced by George Martin, the band’s fifth UK album included seven songs from the film, including the singles “Help!” and “Ticket to Ride”. The other seven songs on the album included the most-covered song ever written, Paul McCartney’s “Yesterday”.

1974: Richard Nixon resigns By late 1973, the Watergate scandal had escalated, costing Nixon much of his political support. On August 9, 1974, he resigned in the face of almost certain impeachment and removal from office - the only time a U.S. president has done so. On September 8, 1974, his successor, Gerald Ford, pardoned him.

1969: Sharon Tate murdered In the early hours of August 8, 1969 four members of the Manson ‘Family’ invaded the rented home of actress Sharon Tate and director Roman Polanski at 10050 Cielo Drive in Los Angeles. They murdered Tate, who was eight and a half months pregnant, along with three friends who were visiting at the time, and an 18-year-old

visitor. The murders were carried out by Tex Watson, Susan Atkins, and Patricia Krenwinkel, under the direction of Charles Manson.

2005: Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans Hurricane Katrina was an extremely destructive and deadly Category 5 hurricane that hit Florida and Louisiana in August 2005, causing catastrophic damage; particularly in the city of New Orleans and the surrounding areas. Subsequent flooding, caused largely as a result of fatal engineering flaws in the flood protection system known as levées around the city of New Orleans, precipitated most of the loss of lives.

1969: Woodstock music festival Held between August 15-18, 1969 at Max Yasgur’s 600-acre dairy farm near White Lake in Bethel, New York, Woodstock attracted an audience of more than 400,000. Among the performers were Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, The Who and Crosby, Stills and Nash. The facilities, however, did not provide adequate toilet facilities or first aid for the number of people attending; hundreds of thousands found themselves in a struggle against bad weather, food shortages and poor sanitation.

Fitness How to measure your heart rate M

easuring your heart rate using a heart rate monitor is a good way to gauge the effectiveness of your workout because as you strengthen your body through exercise, you also strengthen your heart. Measuring the rate of your heart during exercise can help you determine when you’re pushing your body too hard or need to push it harder to achieve the level of fitness you are seeking.

In order to understand how to condition your body by analyzing your heart rate, it’s important to understand the four different types of heart rate. They are as follows.

Resting heart rate

Your resting heart rate is the rate that your heart beats per minute during periods of the day when you are most relaxed. Your RHR can be measured after you get out of bed or during a period of the day when you’re sitting or relaxing comfortably. Although heart rates vary between individuals, the average RHR for a man is between 60 to 80 beats per minute. The average for a woman is between 70 to 90. An adult in good shape can have an RHR of in the low 60’s while an

74

unhealthy RHR can be as high as 100. A very well conditioned athlete can have an RHR in the 40’s. To get an accurate measurement of your resting heart rate by using a heart rate monitor you should take measurements at different rested periods of the day over the course of a week - and then average them out.

Maximum heart rate Your maximum heart rate is the peak amount of beats that your heart has the potential to reach. You’ll reach your MHR when you’ve pushed your heart as far as it can go during an aerobic workout. It’s extremely difficult to accurately measure your MHR. Experienced endurance athletes do so at fitness laboratories using an electrocardiogram (ECG). To get an idea of your maximum heart rate, subtract your age from the number 220. With this formula, if you’re 35, your MHR would be 185. This formula is not an exact science and does not ensure complete accuracy. Furthermore, it’s important to understand that it can be dangerous attempting to measure your maximum heart rate, as you can cause serious damage to your body if you push it too hard.

Training heart rate Your training heart rate is the rate that you maintain during aerobic workouts in an effort to improve fitness. In order to properly train with a heart rate monitor, you should work out at a steady, rhythmic pace. This will allow you to capture consistent measurements. The right number to train at depends on your fitness goals and is widely debated among professionals. To promote general fitness you can train as low as 50 percent or as high as 70 percent of your maximum heart rate. For more experienced athletes, it’s argued that this number can be above 70 percent and as high as 80 percent of your MHR. The lower numbers are recommended for beginners. You’ll likely reach the 50 - 60 range while briskly walking, and the 60 to 70 range while running for a steady period of time.
