St Ives T Ives - the dazzling jewel in Cornwall’s crown. A picturesque fishing harbour and seaside town. Voted best family holiday destination by Coast magazine and one of TripAdvisor’s top 10 European beaches. Wander through the maze of narrow cobbled streets, independent shops and fisherman’s cottages in the heart of St Ives, or sample some of the tastiest award-winning restaurants, cafés and bars in the Southwest. Surf at the blue flag-rated Porthmeor beach and feel the soft sand between your toes, or set off on an inspiring walk along the coastal path towards Land’s End.

Surfing at St Ives If you are keen to learn how to surf then you couldn’t have picked a better spot - it’s true to say that Cornwall is the surfing capital of the UK. This surfing destination is available all year

round and skilled surfers are always keen to try ‘the boiler’ come winter. This is quite a challenging wave but there are opportunities for those who weren’t brought up on a surfboard to take a shot as well, particularly if you visit in summer when Porthmeor provides the perfect spot for new surfers. The St Ives Surf School is highly regarded as one of the best places to learn to surf in Cornwall. It’s a must do if staying in St Ives.

Get up close with seals If you are keen to see nature on your trip to St Ives then you need to book a trip to Seal Island. Just 3.5 miles along the coast from St Ives, this is one of the only experiences in the UK where you’ll be able to see these mammals up close in their natural habitat. At certain times of the year the island is also abundant with other wild creatures too. The spectacular views from the boat trip alone will give you a completely fresh perspective on the rough and rugged Cornish coastline.

Discover modern art at Tate St Ives Art lovers should definitely make sure that they visit Tate St Ives. This branch of the art brand has been open to the public since 1993 and is incredibly popular with tourists and locals. Indeed, even the architecture of the building itself is absolutely glorious. The building overlooks Porthmeor beach and the circular entrance is nothing short of iconic. Of course, indoors there is charm to spare with stunning collections of contemporary art.

Enjoy St Ives’ beaches

Enjoy the beauty of St Ives town St Ives is wonderfully quaint and it is an absolute delight simply wandering around the cobbled streets. If you are looking for a beach holiday then St Ives is certainly the place to be. You’ll have your pick of four main beaches, each within walking distance of the town. While there are plenty of choices, Porthmeor is the most popular (you’ll have already spotted it if you visited the Tate as we suggested). There’s also Porthminister Beach, our favourite and perfectly located near to train and bus transport links. quiet spot. With its own beach huts, it’s the perfect family friendly beach.

Take a hike to Zennor If you’re anxious to escape the hustle and bustle of the St Ives, you should consider taking a hike to Zennor. This remote, sleepy village is hidden away on the coast, reached by heading west from St Ives along the wellmarked South West Coastal Path. At four hours and 6.5 miles it’s a long walk, but well worth the effort.

Whether it’s playing major festivals or appearing on the One Show, performing for Michael Stipe himself, Stipe are the definitive R.E.M. tribute a complete band, and encyclopaedic knowledge of the back catalogue. The boys from Athens’ legacy is in good hands.

Support comes from Laid – A Tribute To James. Playing all the hits including “Sit Down”, “Come Home”, “Laid”, “She’s a Star”, “Tomorrow” and “Getting Away With It”, Laid have received high praise everywhere they play and have marked their territory as the leading tribute to one of the best bands to come out of Manchester.

Meat and potato pie A comforting homemade beef and potato pie - perfect for a family meal.

Ingredients For the pie filling l 2.75kg/6lb braising steak, cut into cubes

l 3 medium onions, chopped l 2.75kg/6lb potatoes, peeled, cut into chunks

l 1 tbsp beef extract l 4 tbsp gravy granules

For the pastry l 500g/1lb 2oz plain flour l 2 tsp salt l 125g/4½oz margarine, cut into small cubes l 125g/4½oz lard, cut into small cubes l 125ml/4fl oz cold water l 1 free-range egg, beaten

Step-by-step 1 For the filling, put the beef and onions into a large, lidded saucepan and season with salt. Pour in enough water to cover the contents of the pan and bring to the boil. Once

boiling, put cover the pan with a lid, reduce the heat and simmer gently for 2½–3 hours, or until the meat is tender.

2 For the pastry, tip the flour and

salt into a bowl, and add the cubes of margarine and lard. Rub the fat into the flour until the mixture has the texture of breadcrumbs. Add water and mix with a cutlery knife until the pastry begins to come together. Knead the dough lightly, shape into a ball, wrap in clingfilm and chill for 30 minutes.

3 Once the meat has been cooking for two hours, preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. 4 Cook the potatoes in salted water until tender. Drain and set aside. 5 When the meat is tender, remove the pan from the heat. Mix together the gravy granules and meat extract, and gradually add to the cooled liquid, mixing in thoroughly. Pour over the meat, and heat gently until simmering. Once simmering, remove from the heat and leave to cool slightly.

6 Remove the pastry from the fridge. Cut a small amount of pastry and roll it out to a 3mm thickness. Cut the pastry into thin strips. Dampen the rim of a 28 x 38cm pie dish with water, and line the rim with the strips of pastry. 7 Strain the meat and onions, reserving the sauce. Spread the meat and onions in an even layer in the base of the dish. Layer the potatoes on top of the meat and onions. Pour the sauce over the filling, until just below the top of the potatoes. 8 Roll the remaining pastry out to a 3mm thickness, and cut to the size of the pie dish. Brush the strips of pastry on the rim of the dish with beaten egg, and place the pastry lid on top. Press the edges to seal, and brush the lid of the pie with the remaining beaten egg. Cut a few slits in the lid of the pie to allow steam to escape. 9 Cook in the preheated oven for 50–60 minutes, or until the pastry is golden-brown and the filling is bubbling inside.

The British & Irish Lions South African Tour 2021 Fixtures and TV schedule

T

HE British and Irish Lions’ tour of South Africa will go ahead as planned in July and August.

The Lions play three Test matches against the world champions in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Gauteng. They play eight matches in total on the tour, including five warm-up games against invitational sides and Super Rugby teams. The tour will take place at the same time as the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics, which run from 23 July to 8 August. The British and Irish Lions were open to moving the tour to the autumn to

fit in with the new global rugby union calendar which is set to emerge after the coronavirus pandemic. However calendar talks had slowed, and with time pressing British and Irish Lions managing director Ben Calveley had to make a decision one way or the other. “An enormous amount of planning, especially from a logistical perspective, goes into putting on a Lions series, so it was crucial that a decision was agreed upon in good time,” Calveley said. “I am particularly pleased that we are able to provide some clarity for all those Lions supporters eager to travel to South Africa.”

The Lions had previously said they were unconcerned about touring at the same time as the rearranged Tokyo Games, saying there would be no “direct clashes”. South Africa Rugby chief executive Jurie Roux added: “The whole of South Africa is looking forward to welcoming the Lions and we continue progressing our plans to provide travelling supporters with a once-in-a-lifetime experience.” The Lions have toured South Africa on 13 previous occasions, with the first Tour taking place in 1891. The Lions have won four Test series and lost eight - including their most recent tour in 2009 - with one drawn.

Live coverage is on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Rugby. It has also been announced that highlights of all three Tests against South Africa will be on Channel 4, while All4 will show highlights of ALL the Lions Tour matches.

History

Labrador Retrievers originated in Newfoundland, off the coast of Canada. Theywere originally bred as a working dog, usually for fishermen, to help haul in nets and fetch things on boats. They are the most popular breed in a number of countries including the US and UK, and are often chosen as assistance dogs for blind and disabled owners, too. Most recently they’ve been found to be wonderful “Therapy Dogs”, visiting hospitals and hospices to cheer up residents, and they can be found working for police forces and armies as drugs and bombdetection dogs. In fact, five Labradors have won Dickin Medals for their bravery or acts of devotion.

Appearance

Labradors are typically black, yellow (shades vary from a darker, almost-tan colour to a bright white or fawn) or chocolate brown. They are generally muscular and athletic when they are younger but are prone to weight gain as they age, so daily exercise is important. Their coats are short and require minimal grooming. They are mediumlarge dogs, with the males tending to be bigger and more muscular. They can vary though; different families can come from different backgrounds. So, where a puppy from a family of working dogs will tend to be stockier and more muscular a puppy bred from show dogs will be more streamlined.

their own wellbeing and are also more than happy to go swimming in cold water, so look out for Limber Tail (where their tails go limp from exposure to cold). Always keep an eye out for limps or tenderness and give them a check-over after walks to make sure they haven’t picked up any thorns in their fur or between the pads of their paws.

Temperament

They are incredibly loyal, friendly and trainable dogs. They are outgoing and eager to please, and are wonderful family dogs. They are very energetic and will need around 30-60 minutes of exercise a day to make sure they are happy and to prevent them from putting on weight as they’re always happy to have a snack or two and will eagerly polish off any food that is left unattended.

Is a labrador for me?

If you’re looking for a large, cooperative, friendly canine pal you needn’t look further. If you have the time and ability to meet their needs and put in the groundwork with their training, you can expect a relatively easy life with your Labrador. As with any breed, though, we always recommend doing your research and choosing a breed with care.

Fun labrador fact

It’s possible to have yellow, black and chocolate puppies in a single litter.

Because they have been bred to be working dogs, Labradors have a lot of energy. On walks they have a tendency to throw themselves through brambles and barbed wire fences with little regard for

History

The Dachshund, literally translating to ‘badger dog’ and affectionately known as the Sausage Dog, is a German dog breed developed over 300 years ago. The standard-sized Dachshunds were bred for the purpose of hunting badgers, owed to their long bodies and short legs which allowed them to burrow and dig into tunnels. In the UK, Dachshunds come in two sizes – standard and miniature - however, a third smaller size, kaninchen (‘rabbit’ in German) is recognised elsewhere by the World Canine Federation.

Appearance

Dachshunds may have a smooth and shiny coat, a wired coarse coat or a longhaired coat, and their grooming needs will vary depending on which coat they have. Colours can range from red, black, to chocolate or tan, or a mix of two or more of these. Dachshund breeds have a long snout and an elongated, muscular

Part three

Dachshund build with short legs - hence the name Sausage Dog!

Temperament

Dachshunds are loyal, intelligent, courageous, and dominant. They are pack dogs and while they love human and doggy companionship, they would generally prefer to live with other dachshunds or other small dogs which have similar temperaments. They tend to bark a lot, and don’t be fooled by their small stature - their bark can be very loud! You shouldn’t leave your Dachshund alone for more than 4 hours at a time. They should get at least one 45-60 minute walk every day or split into two 30 minute playtimes, and you should be careful allowing them to run if they have known back problems or other health conditions.

Things to watch out for

Because of their long backs, it is important that Dachshunds do not become overweight as this could lead to spinal and disk problems, hip dysplasia or patella luxation. Dachshunds are also susceptible to ear infections due to their floppy, folded ears so it is important to regularly check and clean their ears. A loyal breed, they have a tendency to attach to one person which may lead to problems with separation anxiety.

Is a dachshund for me?

Dachshunds cannot be left alone for long periods, so if you are out of the house all day you may wish to consider another breed. However, if your heart is set on this lovely little breed, it is advisable to hire a dog sitter or take them to doggy daycare. Dachshunds are great with children and would need to live with an active family who enjoys the outdoors. They love cuddling, are relatively odourless and do not require bathing as often as some other larger, thickercoated breeds. They are mild-tomoderate shedders, so if you don’t mind a bit of fur here and there, this could be the perfect breed for you!

Did you know?

The Dachshund’s popularity declined dramatically during the two World Wars because their pictures were used in Anti-German propaganda. However, today, they remain a highly popular and desired breed. To advertise text ADVERT to: 01352 870 760

Explore Gibraltar lo idays H

G

ibraltar’s majestic rocky outline is one of the great sights of the Mediterranean, with a history to match, embracing early Neanderthal discoveries and many monuments to its pivotal military heritage. Its immense heights, accessed by cable car, offer glorious views and nature walks, with plenty of other sightseeing options, beaches and excursions on land and sea.

What to see and do Gibraltar has enough to keep you occupied all day, but you could spend three to six hours seeing the highlights - on a tour or on your own - and devote the rest of your stay to the beach, shopping or a dolphin-watching boat trip. Alternatively, devote the whole day to trips to Spain or even Morocco. The official tourist board website has useful ideas, links and further information, especially on the confusing array of tickets required for combinations of sights.

What can I do in four hours or less? Gibraltar’s most popular sightseeing trip is the cable car from the old town, which climbs 1350ft (412m) in

six minutes to offer fine views and, usually, some of the Rock’s famous wild monkeys. This is something you can do under your own steam, but be sure to buy a ticket online to avoid in part the long queues when cruise ships are in port. Note you will still need to exchange your e-ticket at the base station. From the top station you can walk half a mile (800m) downhill to see St Michael’s Cave) by way of the Skywalk, a glass-surfaced platform opened in 2018. The site’s ticket includes several other attractions that can be accessed on foot by road or path from the top station, including the Upper Rock Nature Reserve and O’Hara’s Battery.

Alternatively, continue on foot just over a mile (2km) to another of the Territory’s key sights, the Great Siege Tunnels, which you can also access from the top station if you don’t want to see the Cave. Visit walkgibraltar.com for excellent guided walks in the area. Plenty of other tours are available if you don’t want to explore independently, and can save time on a short stay. Typically these last 90 minutes, three hours or six hours, with similar highlights whether you choose the popular official taxi tours or the more popular Gibraltar Rock Tours.

Another half mile (800m) beyond the Cave is the Apes’ Den, home to the bulk of Gibraltar’s monkeys. Here you can catch the cable car down from the mid-station, but, vitally, not between April and October, when it doesn’t stop here.

What can I do in eight hours or less?

superb birdlife, especially migrating birds: contact Avian Tours for details of day excursions.

It is possible to join excursions to destinations farther afield, but check timings and days of operation: some tours require 10 hours or more and operate only one or two days a week.

Dolphin-spotting tours with two similar operators are also popular and offer dramatic views of the Rock from the water: Dolphin Safari tours last between one and two hours with a claimed 99 per cent chance of a sighting (£25 per person).

Parody Tours is typical, with excursions that include Tangiers (from £85 per person), Jerez (£70), Ronda (£70) and elsewhere. Gibraltar has a choice of beaches, mostly on the east coast, for which you will need to use a bus or take a taxi. For sand, visit Sandy Bay or larger Eastern Bay (buses # 4 or 8 to Both Worlds stop): the latter is the only beach unaffected by afternoon shadow cast by the Rock. Camp Bay is pebbly, but charming, with two swimming pools and plenty of facilities: take buses #4 or 9 to Rosia. Catalan Bay has rock pools, facilities and a family-friendly atmosphere. Gibraltar is rich in natural history, with

Eating and drinking UK visitors will find plenty of familiar “pub-grub” dishes, especially in the obvious areas frequented by visitors. Explore side streets and the marina and waterfront for smaller, more local bars and cafés serving traditional Spanish tapas or local specialities such as the Italian-influenced rosto (pasta with a tomato, meat and vegetable sauce); fideos al horno (a baked pasta and meat dish); calentita (a pizza or pancake-like dish made of chick-pea flour); the similar, polenta-like panissa (cut into strips and fried); pinchitas

(kebabs); and torta de acelgas (spinach flan).

Don’t leave Gibraltar without… Shopping in Gibraltar offers many familiar UK high street names but prices are VAT (sales tax) free. Note that some shops only accept cash (Gibraltar or UK pounds or euros), and that it is hard to exchange Gibraltar pounds outside the Territory, so spend them locally or ask for change in UK sterling. Local craft specialities include silverware and textiles, notably the Spanish shawls in lace and silk known as mantillas, along with Gibraltar Crystal glass – this factory and shop features a free exhibition and glassblowing demonstrations. Gibraltar Arts and Crafts in the central Casemates Square makes a good one-stop shop for attractive local gifts. Close to the same square is the town market, a busy focus of territory life since 1929.

It happened this month ...in2009: Death of Michael Jackson

On June 25, 2009, American singer Michael Jackson died of acute propofol and benzodiazepine intoxication at his Los Angeles home.

Dubbed the “King of Pop”, he is regarded as one of the most significant cultural figures of the 20th century. Through popularising complicated dance moves such as the moonwalk and the robot and making massive-selling albums such as Off The Wall and Thriller, his contributions to music, dance and fashion made him a global figure. His death triggered reactions around the world, creating unprecedented surges of Internet traffic and dramatically boosting sales of his music.

...in1938: Superman makes

his debut

One of the first and most popular superheroes, he made his first appearance in Action Comics #1 in June 1938. The original story was written by Jerry Siegel and illustrated by Joe Shuster. Superman has since been adapted for a number of other media including radio serials, novels, movies, television shows and theatre. Although Superman was not the first superhero character, he popularised the superhero archetype and established its conventions. Superheroes are usually judged by how closely they resemble the standard set by Superman. He was the bestselling superhero character in American comic books up until the 1980s.

On June 17, 1994, NFL star turned film and television personality O.J. Simpson was charged with the murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman. Instead of turning himself in, he fled in a white Ford Bronco through the highways of Los Angeles in an attempt to elude police. Over the next hour and half and 60 miles of Southern California freeway, as crowds of people gathered on overpasses and a pack of police cruisers followed close behind, Simpson took a live TV audience on a real-life car chase it will never forget. When it was finally over, Simpson eventually turned himself in to police at his home in Brentwood, California. He was found liable for the deaths in a civil trial in 1997.

www.abcboathire.com

F it’s your first time boating and perhaps you’re a little apprehensive - don’t worry. ABC Boat Hire have devised a list of the best canal boat holidays for beginners. These involve canal routes which don’t have too many locks to navigate and are often quieter destinations – allowing you to get to grips with your narrowboat.

44

So, which are the best canal routes for beginners? From routes nestled in the South Wales countryside to exploring the wonders of Alice in Wonderland at the Lewis Carrol Centre, find first time canal boat holidays for all the family.

Gotyre Wharf

Explore the Brecon return route at Gotyre Wharf. This quiet canal is perfect for first time boaters as it’s land-locked and only has a few locks to navigate through. This 7-night

trip is a great canal boat holiday for beginners - oozing tranquillity whilst combined with picturesque scenery alongside the canal. Nestled in the South of Wales, Gotyre Wharf is a popular canal choice for boaters - being just on the edge of Blaenavon Industrial Landscape, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Brecon is known as the outdoor capital of Wales - find yourself cycling, hiking, kayaking and more whilst on your canal boat holiday at Gotyre Wharf.

Gotyre Wharf

Anderton Marina

Another popular cruise for beginners is the Lymm return from Anderton Marina. Again, this route does not encounter too many locks (only 2!) – making it a great choice for first time boaters. Drift through tunnels and countryside with scenery to admire either side to slow down for. This leisurely cruise is a great place for seeing attractions such as the birthplace of Alice in Wonderland at the Lewis Carroll centre. Another main attraction to see is the Anderton Boat lift – one of the Seven Wonders of the Waterways.

Alvechurch Marina

The perfect lock-free canal boat holiday, the Birmingham return from Alvechurch Marina is a great trip for beginners. This short break has no locks at all and requires a cruising time of 5 hours per day - meaning this trip can be a 3-night trip away, and is perfect for first-timers. This short lock-free canal holiday also gives you the opportunity to visit the world-famous

Cadbury World. Not only this, but being closer to Birmingham will allow you to peruse the tranquil Botanical Gardens in Edgbaston and reach the lively hub of Brindley Place - an area popular with locals due to the wealth of bars and restaurants scattered across the canal side.

Gailey Base

Although this canal route has slightly more locks and is a 7-night stay, it’s still a popular choice for beginners. The Stourport return from Gailey Base cruises on the waters between Gailey and Stourport-on-Severn with red sandstone rocks and scattered canopies of colourful green trees. Based in the heart of Staffordshire, enjoy this Midlands-based canal route with all the family.

Blackwater Meadow Marina With a total of only 4 locks, the Llangollen return from Blackwater Meadow Marina is one of the best canal boat holidays for beginners allowing you to relax without having to

navigate tricky locks, but also challenge you to encounter a few along the way. This week trip also only requires 4 hours of cruising time per day meaning you have plenty of time to get out and about to explore the surrounding areas. Whether it’s admiring the Welsh countryside or sightseeing in the pretty town of Ellesmere, this first-time canal boat holiday has a lot to offer.

T’S no exaggeration to say that when a dog goes missing or is stolen, it’s utterly heartbreaking. But it’s a good idea to keep things in perspective. Yes, in the current Covid climate, dogs are at a premium and there has most definitely been a rise in dog theft. However, while the numbers are increasing, they still remain relatively low. Still, it never hurts to take stock and ask yourself if you’re doing all you can to keep you and your dog safe. Dogs For Good have put together some things to consider to reduce the likelihood of your dog being taken and also to keep yourself safe.

of the road when you’re out on a walk. Doing so will make it far more difficult for someone to open a car door, take your dog and drive off. Poor recall If your dog has poor recall, ‘social walks’, on the lead around your local area are fine. Give your dog plenty of opportunities to engage with what’s important to them – sniffing, looking around etc. and they’ll feel the benefit. You can further add to their enrichment quota

Extendable leads Used correctly, extendable leads are a good halfway house between a lead walk and a free run. Make sure you give your dog ten minutes or so at the start of the walk to interact with their environment by opening up the lead so they can shake off the cobwebs and explore safely. If you do this at the beginning of the walk, they’ll be happier to walk on a shorter lead for the rest of the walk.

How to protect your dog from theft

Keeping eyes on your dog

is still the best thing you can do to keep him or her safe. Using your phone to catch up with calls/emails when you’re out and about with your dog is a huge distraction … and thieves know that. Garden access Is your garden secure? Did you lock the gate? It’s always worth checking. And as before, keep an eye on your dog when they’re outside.

Don’t leave your dog outside shops Our

dogs are so precious and can be taken in a heartbeat. You wouldn’t leave your wallet or handbag unattended so don’t leave your dog alone.

by spending time playing some brain games with them at home. Safer spaces Findt some safer, free-run locations where you’ve got clear sight of your dog. Avoid wooded areas and keep to smaller open spaces where you can see all around you and your dog.

High-value food rewards

Small pieces of chicken, cheese or whatever your dog likes most are a good way to ensure that your dog is motivated to come back to you.

Be less predictable Try

altering your route and, where practical, the time you walk your dog. Walk with someone else Even with the current restrictions, you can still take a walk with someone else as long as you keep a safe distance apart. Microchips Make sure your dog has been chipped and that you keep any changes to your details updated with the database. Also, because chips can move, it’s a good idea to ask your vet to scan your dog annually to check where the chip is. If the unthinkable happens and your dog is taken, remember, you are not alone. There are plenty of online groups and pages offering help, guidance and support. DogLost is an excellent charity which provides a lost and found service which is free of charge. You should also notify police, dog wardens, vets and local rescue centres.

Visit dogsforgood.org for more information.

Tinted car windows A relatively cheap way to keep what’s in your car less visible to prying eyes. Keep your dog ‘building side’

Where possible, try and keep your dog away from the side

Summer house ideas - how to create an inspiring garden room

garden summer house can be used as your very own special space. It can be transformed into a studio for writing, painting or other crafting activities, or can simply become a space for you to relax in and enjoy your leisure time.

Create a calming cabin to seek shade

Use a summer house to seek shade during the hottest parts of the day. Keep things simple with sizeable bench seating that can double as a day bed; filled with cushions to make it all the more comfy. Unify your summer house with the garden furniture by painting all in a calming neutral, such as white to help keep things cool.

Create an outdoor living room

Use a summer house to extend your indoor living space. Perhaps you have a growing family and need the extra space or simply want another area to socialise. Decorating the garden structure in the same fashion as your interior decor helps to unify your living spaces.

Find a secluded spot

The position of your summer house is really important. Generally at the far end of the garden is a good place - in the middle will make your garden seem

50

smaller than it is and break up the lawn space you have. Plus, if you’re looking to create a beautiful retreat, the further you are away from everyday life, the better.

Build the perfect home office

If you work from home, a garden office could be just the thing for you. For a calm effect, paint the room white and set a desk near a window or door, where it can be opened for a cool breath of fresh air. Create a stylish spot to study with a mix of modern furniture and traditional accessories, such as the phone and wooden filing unit.

Set up an outdoor studio

A garden studio is the perfect place to isolate a hobby, away from the main house - not to mention being surrounded nature to inspire. Whether it’s an art room or a yoga studio, the dedicated space will encourage you to nurture your hobbies to flourish, allowing you to feel more connected and in the ‘zone’ because there are no other distractions in sight.

Mix and match your furniture

Give your garden summer house a relaxed look with a mix of furniture styles, from the kind of comfy sofa you might find in your living room to painted wicker pieces in a hot-pink hue. Junk-shop finds are great for outhouses, as you don’t need to have your best furniture in here – and remember that upcycling can turn even the most unloved piece into something great.

Part One

How to plan a loft conversion Could you have cash in your attic? Creating a new room at the top of the house will not only add space to your home, but can also increase its value. In our three-part feature we’ll tell you everything you need to know about planning and costing your dream space.

C

ONVERTING your loft can not only provide more space, but it can also add value to your home if you decide to sell. Whilst there are many benefits, it is important that you take time to consider all factors before progressing with work.

must also pass building control inspections for it to be compliant.

What is permitted development?

First of all, you will need to check that you are able to convert your loft space. This depends on the internal height, type of roof and the space you have available downstairs for an additional staircase.

The majority of loft conversions fall under ‘permitted development’ - in other words, you don’t need planning permission to have one. This is good news, as the planning process can be a long and tricky one. However, special rules and guidelines govern conservation areas and listed buildings. If your house is listed, you will need Listed Building Consent, and if you live in a conservation area you’ll need permission for any dormers or extensions.

Is my attic space suitable for a loft conversion?

Whatever your situation, you will still need Building Regulations approval and possibly a Party Wall Agreement with your neighbours.

There are certain head height requirements you must adhere to in order for your loft conversion to be compliant. As a rule of thumb, you need 2.2m between the top of the floor joist of the loft to the bottom of the ridge beam. To make for a comfortable attic bedroom or living room, at least half the loft space should be this tall. However, you could consider placing a loo or bathroom under the sloping eave, where headroom is less of a priority. Before beginning any construction work you will need to have architectural plans drawn up, that meet either permitted development or planning permission requirements as well as party wall agreements if your home is joined onto another at either side. Your loft conversion

52

You should always ensure that: l No more than 50 cubic metres of space is being added to a detached or semi-detached house. For terraced houses, this figure drops to 40 cubic metres. These figures take into account any previous loft additions. l You’re not raising the existing roof height or altering the front of the building significantly. The back can usually be changed physically and cosmetically, but it’s wise to consult with your local council to be sure. l As mentioned above, there should be 2.1 metres of head height in the main part of the conversion. l You must apply for planning permission for any balcony or terrace.

Future Tech

Part Two

More technology that will shape our future world. The series concludes next month..

Human-powered wearables

Scientists have found a way to harvest some of the energy you spend when you exercise and turn it into electricity. No-one will be plugging themselves into the grid any time soon, but researchers believe their technology could power a heart-rate monitor or fitness tracker.

They were able to fit thermoelectric generators into stretchable film bands that can be worn around the wrist. They cost less than £10 to make, and because they’re made from a liquid metal and polymer, they are both self-healing and easy to recycle.

Drowning forest fires in sound Forest fires could one day be dealt with by drones that would direct loud noises at the trees below. Since sound is made up of pressure waves, it can be used to disrupt the air surrounding a fire, essentially cutting off the supply of oxygen to the fuel. At the right frequency, the fire

simply dies out, as researchers at George Mason University in Virginia recently demonstrated with their sonic extinguisher. Apparently, bass frequencies work best.

54

Heart monitoring T-shirt

Using a single lead ECG printed into the fabric, this new t-shirt will accurately measure heart beats and upload them to the cloud via Bluetooth. Once there, algorithms process the data to accurately detect irregular heartbeats such as arrhythmia heart beats, which could prove life saving.

And it’s not just athletes who could benefit. It could also be used for clinical applications to allow those who may already suffer with heart conditions enough warning of a heart attack.

Coffee power

London’s coffee industry creates over 200,000 tonnes of waste every year, so what do we do with it? Entrepreneur Arthur Kay’s big idea is to use his company, ‘Bio-bean’, to turn 85 per cent of coffee waste into biofuels for heating buildings and powering transport.
