together a guide to Lapland. including how to get there on a budget, what to pack and where to find deals.
Where is Lapland?
Lapland is in the north of Finland, on the Arctic Circle - so unsurprisingly, it boasts plenty of snow-covered landscapes. For example there’s Lapland’s capital Rovaniemi with its lively bars and restaurants, not to mention Santa’s village just 8km away, or the more remote village of Levi which is a hit with skiiers and snowboarders. It’s worth noting that there is a Lapland in Sweden too, but we’ve chosen to focus on Finnish Lapland in this guide as it tends to be the more popular option for families.
How to meet Santa during your visit
Thinking of planning a trip? We’ve put
underground caverns, the Santa Post Office and plenty more fun including Arctic Circle crossings and traditional ceremonies.
If you’re booking a holiday package, it’s worth checking whether this includes a Meet Santa experience as this could be an easy way of saving money compared to booking your flights, hotel stays and all of the activities separately.
No need to hitch a ride on Santa’s sled - there are plenty of UK airlines offering flights with budget-friendly fares to Lapland. l Finnair offers flights to a host of airports handy for those planning to explore Lapland. l easyJet has direct flights to Rovaniemi from £64.99pp. l British Airways has direct flights to Helsinki from £84pp - you can then catch the train to Rovaniemi. l TUI has direct flights to Kittila Airport as well as offering routes to Rovaniemi.
l Norwegian offers flights to Rovaniemi from £49.90pp in November or £101.50pp in December if you’re planning a last-minute getaway. How long is the flight to Lapland? If you’re flying direct then you’re looking at a flight time of approximately three and a half hours. If you’re considering a stopover, then you could be looking at total times of approximately five hours.

RECIPE Icy snow globe cake This festive icy snow globe cake is how we like to picture a winter wonderland. Use this decoration technique on top of a 20cm round fruit cake. l5 l1
“Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year.”
tbsp apricot jam, warmed and sieved tbsp icing sugar, plus extra for dusting x 454g pack marzipan ready-to-roll white icing x tube blue gel food colouring
l 1.3kg l1
Step by step 1 For this icing technique you will need 1 x 20cm round fruit cake. Turn the cake upside down so you have a flat top, then put it on a cake board or cake stand. Brush the top and sides with a thin layer of jam. Dust your work surface with icing sugar then roll the marzipan out thinly until it’s big enough to cover the cake – you can use a piece of string to check the dimensions. Use the rolling pin to help you lift the marzipan onto the cake, then smooth down the sides. Trim off the excess from around the base, using a sharp knife. Brush over another layer of jam. 2 Knead 850g of the ready-to-roll icing with a little blue food colouring to get a smooth, pale blue soft icing. Again, dust the surface with a little icing sugar and roll out the coloured icing until it is big enough to cover the marzipanned cake. Trim the excess, and smooth out any bumps by rubbing and buffing the icing with your hands.

Prep: 1hr 15m
3 Roll out the remaining white icing into a long narrow strip, about as tall as the cake – it might be easier to do in 2 pieces. Trim the bottom edge to give a straight line, then use scissors or a knife to cut assorted iceberg and peak shapes from the strip. Mix 3 tablespoons of icing sugar with a few drops of water to get a runny icing. Brush the back of each shape in turn, then stick around the base of the cake. Overlap each new shape, building up a mountain scene, until the side of the cake is covered. 4 Clean your jar or glass and dry with kitchen paper until it is sparkling. Work out where you want to position your snow globe jar, and stack as many small leftover iceberg icing pieces inside as you need to make a plinth for your animal to stand on, so it sits roughly in the middle of the jar. Sit the animal on the icing, then cover with the upturned jar. Push the jar down so the base presses into the icing to stick. Roll the remaining trimmings of white icing into lots of little balls like snowballs. Arrange them around the base of the jar in piles.
Tip Once covered in icing this cake will keep for 4 weeks before being cut.
Total time: 1hr 15m
Serves: 14-16

RECIPE Icy snow globe cake This festive icy snow globe cake is how we like to picture a winter wonderland. Use this decoration technique on top of a 20cm round fruit cake.
Ingredients l 5 tbsp apricot jam, warmed and sieved l 3 tbsp icing sugar, plus extra for dusting l 1 x 454g pack marzipan l 1.3kg ready-to-roll white icing l 1 x tube blue gel food colouring

FITNESS ood Christmas? Nice dinner? Nice presents? Good, that’s how Christmas should be done of course, but now it’s time to tone that turkeyfilled stomach and pulverise those extra pounds you’ve gained over the festive period.
G
A Christmas meal alone contains around 1,500 calories, three quarters of your recommended daily allowance. With pigs in blankets around 100 calories each, a glass of mulled wine 119 calories and champagne potentially even more than that, it’s easy to consume more calories than your brain can even think of over Christmas. But it’s Christmas right? Not a problem? Not if you go about it the right way. Here are some top tips when it comes to ensuring postChristmas success in the gym.
Start early Don’t wait too long before starting back at the gym. There are five whole days between Boxing Day and New Years Day alone, what’s wrong with them? Waiting too long to return to the gym may make
those extra calories consumed over Christmas a lot more difficult and time consuming to lose. If you want to see progress from before Christmas, the earlier you get back to the gym the better.
Continue to eat right Don’t cut certain things out of your diet to balance out the Christmas
34
meals. Cutting out carbs will lead to your body burning protein and lead to a loss of ability to build muscle in the months post Christmas. Cut back, don’t cut out. With Christmas leading to constant snacks and a more irregular food intake, try and get back to a routine when it comes to food, eat regularly and space your meals accordingly, instead of just snacking on the odd mince pie or chocolate cake. Your metabolism will appreciate it greatly.
Treat yourself Why not treat yourself to some gym gear for Christmas? A new sports bra or some new shoes can do wonders for your motivation. Nobody wants to buy some new kit and let it go to waste, do they? Maybe even treat yourself to some sessions from a personal trainer to kickstart your post-Christmas routine in style.
How to lose those extra holiday pounds
Don’t shy from cardio Cardiovascular exercise is crucial to losing weight over Christmas as many of the festive foods can tag on those pounds with ease. Cardio may be gruelling, but don’t shy away - go with a friend, listen to music, do whatever works for you to get you through the cardio you need to lose weight. Mix it up, don’t get bored. Your body will be more grateful for variety if cardio such as cycling, running and rowing opposed to weeks’ worth of the same cardiovascular exercise.
Start small and build up For regular gym-goers it may be easy for your muscles to regress and you may find when you start back you may not be able to lift the same weight as pre-Christmas. Never fear, this is normal. However, don’t spend two hours per session thinking quantity is better than quality - it isn’t. You will get more out of lifting lighter weights correctly than lifting the same weight for two reps for two hours. Your body will soon get back to lifting the same weights you were before Christmas if you give it the time.
Don't give up The most vital of them all. Don’t give up! You may not be able to run as far or lift as heavy as before, but you got there once and you will again. It’s only normal that Christmas has a slightly negative effect and after a year of hard work. You deserved the break!
But another year of hard work in the gym awaits and you will feel refreshed and grateful for the break once you’re hitting those high numbers once again come February. There will be a lot of people in exactly same boat as you post-Christmas. Find a gym near you and get started! In no time at all your holiday indulgences will be just a memory - albeit a happy one!

HOUSE to Home ith sleigh bells fast approaching, it’s time to start thinking about how to decorate your home for Christmas 2019. Will you go with one of the more traditional Christmas colour schemes of gold, red and green? Or will you choose a more modern look incorporating bright and unusual colours? You can embrace the colour scheme in its entirety, or choose subtle decorations and accents.
W
1. Add warmth with copper tones Metallics needn’t mean blingtastic, as the bronze decorating scheme proves. Burnished bronze and aged brass tones can welcome a more sophisticated tone, to the glam look an elegant edge. Warming tones of bronze pair perfectly with current on-trend mustards and rust shades. John Lewis & Partners are blazing the way for bronze on the high street. For this year, to give it a softer edge and mass appeal they are teaming it with palette of earthy colours, mixed with touches of amber, copper and gold.
patterned wallpaper before covering the fireplace and tree with gold decorations. Complete the look with bewitching accents throughout the room.
5. Shimmer with shiny silver Associated with dazzle, silver must make it into your home this Christmas. The cold but glitzy colour creates a look that mimics an uber stylish winter wonderland. Create a bold centrepiece in the form of a shiny mirror and accentuate the shade by dotting silver candles and pots throughout the room. Finish the room off with a shimmering cushion and sparkly baubles.
6. Go traditional with red and green
Christmas colour schemes to brighten up your home
The colour of Father Christmas’ jacket, winter berries and Rudolph’s nose; nothing says Christmas like a splash of red, especially when partnered with lush green foliage. Go ultra traditional this year with rosy red candles, tree decorations, blankets and wrapping paper. Hang a garland made with real pine and dotted with red berries for a fully festive feeling.
white - so stack it up high and experiment with different textures and materials. Try this look in the dining room where white tablecloths and china are a great start.
3. Go for gold From soft, aged tones to brassy and rich bronze shades, gold adds warmth and elegance. It’s a no-brainer at Christmas, but gold can be used as an accent colour all year round to lift and finish a simple room scheme. If your room is neutral, a gold-finish lamp or metal-frame side table will add polish without introducing a colour contrast.
2. Mimic the snow with wintery white Many have long been scared to use such an unforgiving colour in their Christmas scheme; however its sparseness provides a striking look. More really is more with

4. Add decadence with gold and black Enchanting, alluring, seductive, gold is a bold colour with an even bolder personality. If you are feeling daring, smother your walls in a rich, gold
7. Play with a purple palette This rich wintery colour is warm and glam. Traditionally associated with magic and mystery, we couldn’t think of a better colour to incorporate into the home at this special time of year. Another great alternative to traditional red and its deep hue, this looks great combined with bright pinks on the Christmas tree and on your dining table.

Style up a favourite bench as the perfect place to greet guests to your home. Add a snug stove or brazier and set out mulled drinks to keep the cold at bay. Don’t forget to pin up a decorative wreath to celebrate the season in style.
Create a pretty entrance with foliage Armfuls of seasonal foliage in a substantial water-filled container can be added to and refreshed over the festive season. A nosegay composed of the same plants can be hung at the window and completed with a berry-strewn wreath. For another nice touch, follow Scandinavian tradition and lay a branch of fir on the doorstep on which guests can wipe their feet before entering the house.
Make an entrance Give your outdoor space a festive flavour this season. The adventures may have come to a close, but the magic continues outside with a silver wreath, Christmas tree, stag and lashings of fake snow. A frosty palette of icy whites and forest greens can be paired with cosy Nordic accents and a sprinkling of Narnia for a bewitching festive look.
Add some festive magic to your garden
Combine English style with East Coast flair on your Christmas porch with white-washed cladding used to evoke American charm, while reclaimed sleigh and zinc planters create a nostalgic feel. The foliage-and-feather wreath mounted on the wooden door is a pure Christmas classic and a real showstopper.
powered outdoor fairy lights are easily draped in an around hedging and trees, while illuminated creatures, such as the snowy owl pictured, lend a whimsical feel to the overall effect. Christmas is the party season, so what better way to decorate your garden, patio or courtyard with a spattering of twinkling lights.
Style in symmetry Use evergreen shrubs and a classic door wreath to give the entrance to your home a festive makeover. A pair of urns and two standard shrubs form a symmetrical frame around the front door, making your property feel extra special at Christmas. A porch is the perfect place for storing walking boots and firewood, adding an extra rustic edge.

IN THIS MONTH 1968: Apollo 8 orbits the moon
1941: Japanese attack Pearl Harbour
1968
Launched on December 21, Apollo 8 took 68 hours (almost three days) to travel the distance to the Moon. Its three-astronaut crew - Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders - were the first humans to fly to the Moon, to witness and photograph an Earthrise, and to escape the gravity of a celestial body.
At 7:48am Hawaiian Time (18:18 GMT) on December 17, 1941 the US military base at Pearl Harbour, Honolulu was attacked by 353 Imperial Japanese aircraft. All eight U.S. Navy battleships were damaged, with four sunk. The Japanese also sank or damaged three cruisers, three destroyers and an antiaircraft training ship.
The crew orbited the Moon ten times over the course of twenty hours, during which they made a Christmas Eve television broadcast in which they read the first ten verses from the Book of Genesis. Apollo 8 was the first crewed launch of the Saturn V rocket, and was the first human spaceflight from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral.
1980
1980: John Lennon killed On the evening of December 8, 1980, John Lennon was fatally shot in the archway of the Dakota, his New York residence. The perpetrator was Mark David Chapman, a recently unemployed resident of Hawaii. Chapman stated that he was incensed by Lennon’s lifestyle and public statements, especially his much-publicized remark about the Beatles being “more popular than Jesus” and the lyrics of his later songs “God” and “Imagine”. Chapman also said he was inspired by the fictional character Holden Caulfield from J. D. Salinger’s novel The Catcher in the Rye.
1967: First heart transplant
1967 1941
Chapman fired five hollow-point bullets from a .38 special revolver, four of which hit Lennon in the back.
1960: Coronation Street debuts The first episode of Coronation Street was aired on 9 December 1960 at 7pm, and was not initially a critical success. Granada Television had commissioned only 13 episodes, and some inside the company doubted the show would last beyond its planned production run. Despite the criticism, viewers were immediately drawn into the serial, won over by Coronation Street’s ordinary characters. The show currently averages seven million viewers per episode.

The lack of any formal warning, particularly while peace negotiations were still apparently ongoing, led President Franklin D. Roosevelt to proclaim December 7, 1941, “a date which will live in infamy”. Because the attack happened without a declaration of war and without explicit warning, the attack was later judged in the Tokyo Trials to be a war crime. The United States declared war on Japan, Germany and Italy the following day. On Sunday December 3, 1967 at Cape Town’s Groote Schuur Hospital, South African cardiac surgeon Christiaan Barnard performed the world’s first human-to-human heart transplant operation. Louis Washkansky, a 54-year-old grocer who was suffering from diabetes and incurable heart disease, was the patient. The donor heart came from a young woman, Denise Darvall, who had been rendered brain dead in an accident on 2 December 1967, while crossing a street in Cape Town. The subsequent publicity made Barnard a household name. The operation was initially reported as “successful” even though Washkansky only lived a further 18 days
1960
1903: First car number plate The Motor Car Act 1903, which came into force on 1 January 1904, required all motor vehicles to be entered on an official vehicle register, and to carry alphanumeric plates. Number plates at the time consisted of a one or two-letter code, followed by a number between 1 and 9999. The letter A was assigned to London, B was for Lancashire and the West Riding of Yorkshire claimed C.
