DICK WHITTINGTON PANTOMIME Theatre Colwyn - Colwyn Bay
If you live in London then this probably isn’t the dream Christmas shopping holiday destination, but for the rest of us the capital is a fantastic place to get some pre-yuletide revelry and retail action. There are the big shopping meccas - Bond Street, Camden, Covent Garden, Kensington, Knightsbridge, Notting Hill, Oxford Street, Regents Street, Westfield shopping centres at Stratford and White City - as well as less central areas like Canary Wharf, Greenwich, Hampstead, Islington, Muswell Hill... and alongside all those lovely shops there’s an inexhaustible supply of restaurants, pubs, bars, clubs, theatres, galleries, museums and sights. Events to look out for include the Natural History Museum Ice Rink (October 27 - January 8), Raymond Briggs’ Father Christmas at the Lyric (November 18 - December 24), and Hyde Park Winter Wonderland (November 18 - January 2).
Berlin
You can’t beat a glass of mulled wine at a traditional market to warm chilly cockles - and tackle your Christmas shopping list in a merry haze. Berlin has an impressive 60 Christmas markets of varying styles and sizes, nestled in quaint side streets and dominating grand squares. Many have ice rinks, fairs, performances and parades to really get your festive juices flowing. You can buy anything from artisan-crafted Christmas tree decorations, nativity figures and wooden toys to artwork, candles and culinary specialities. When you can’t take any more Christmas spirit, there’s Alexanderplatz for shopping centres, Friedrichstraße for department stores, Kurfürstendamm and Tauentzienstraße for exclusive names and popular chains, Mulackstraße and Alte Schönhauser for big brand and cult fashion, and Oranienstraße and Bergmannstraße for vintage foraging and cool boutiques. Berlin is crammed with other city break essentials too: cool bars and clubs, top restaurants, culture, sights and a huge history. You might also want to check out some of the city’s autumn and winter events such as Berlin Erleuchtet (Illuminated) (October 7 - October 16), and the Berlin Jazz Festival (November 1 - November 6).
Galeries Lafayette, Paris
New York It’s the classic Christmas shopping destination, with amazing shops, food and entertainment. Pleasant fall temperatures and rich autumn foliage mean November and early December is a lovely time to explore Manhattan and the other four boroughs that make up New York City. Hop on the Staten Island Ferry, kick leaves around Central Park and sniff out Brooklyn Botanic Garden before whipping out your gift list and hitting Williamsburg in Brooklyn for vintage finds; Barneys on Madison Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, iconic toy store FAO Schwarz and Saks, all on Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale’s of Third Avenue and Macy’s Herald Square for super-size shopping; and SoHo, Greenwich and the East Village for uber-stylish stores and boho boutiques. There’s also a familiar-sounding chain, and British Christmas shopping favourite T J Maxx, which has three Manhattan stores. When you and your credit card need a break, check out the ING New York City Marathon (November 5), Radio City Christmas Spectacular (November 21 - January 2), Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (November 25), George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker at the New York City Ballet (November 25 - December 31) and the Rockefeller Centre Tree Lighting (November 30). Could it be any more Christmassy?
Paris
Paris and shopping go together like coffee and a croissant. It’s got everything, from department stores and luxury designer brands to cool boutiques, flea markets and gourmet treats. Fuel up in an atmospheric cafe and then hit the Golden Triangle (from Porte Maillot to George-V, avenue Montaigne and the Champs-Élysées) for the world’s best collection of haute couture and ready-to-wear luxury fashion; Haussmann-Saint-Lazare-Opéra district for major department stores such as Galeries Lafayette; the Marais for more avant-garde fashion and beauty; So-Pi (south of Pigalle) for vintage and boho fashion and gifts; and classic shopping hot-spots like Palais-Royal, Montmartre and Rue de Passy. You’ll also find numerous Christmas markets if your festive spirit levels are falling. When you really can’t buy any more, have a stroll along the Seine or around the Tuileries, near the Louvre. You could also take a peek at the Paris fashion exhibitions at the Musee Galliera (September 28 - January 26), Mozart at the Paris Opera (October 22 - November 13), rock concerts at venues across the city at Les Inrocks Volkswagen Festival (November 6 - 12), the Jazz Festival (November 8 - December 15), or try a spot of ice skating at the Patinoire des Cinq Continents, Champs-Elysées (November 16 January 6).

Hogmanay in Edinburgh
F
or those not in the know, New Year’s Eve is a pretty big deal in Scotland. The celebrations often dwarf even those of Christmas, as the latter was not officially deemed a public holiday in Scotland until 1958. So if you’re lucky enough to bid adieu to 2018 in Edinburgh, read on to get the most out of this spectacular holiday before 2019 is upon us for good.
led by a troop of drums and pipes. This tradition is a throwback to Hogmanay’s Nordic roots, when the Vikings would celebrate the Winter Solstice with fire aplenty, as it was seen as a tool for purification and driving away evil spirits.

Concert in the Gardens
December 30, 7.00pm
Join in a time-honoured tradition and begin 2019 in a blaze of glory. Every year, the Royal Mile is transformed into a river of light as thousands of torch-bearers march down towards Holyrood Park,
On reaching the Park, torchbearers will form the distinctive outline of Scotland. 14 wicker sculptures, each representing a region of Scotland and created by young people as part of #ScotArt will be placed within the outline and set ablaze as Scotland’s beating heart, marking the end of Scotland’s Year of Young People 2018.
December 31, 9.00pm
Celebrate Hogmanay in spectacular style at the Concert in the Gardens main stage in the iconic West Princes Street Gardens. Headlining this year is one of the standout bands from Scotland’s musical heritage, Mercury Prize and BRIT Award winners, Franz Ferdinand. Gracing Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Concert in the Gardens stage for the first time ever, bringing their jagged riffs, hands-aloft choruses and euphoric sound to Edinburgh for a new year’s eve to Edinburgh. Supported by Mercury Music prize nominees Mercury and Glasgow based Free Love. At midnight, say goodbye to 2018 and welcome in 2019 with the best views in the house of the fireworks over Edinburgh Castle! Recipe
Classic Christmas pudding
Method 1 Chop the almonds coarsely. Peel, core and chop the apples. Sharpen your knife and chop the candied peel. (You can chop the almonds and apples in a food processor, but the peel must be done by hand) Grate three quarters of the nutmeg. Mix all the ingredients for the pudding, except the butter, in a large bowl. 2 Grate a quarter of it into the bowl, then stir everything together. Repeat until all the butter is grated, then stir for 3-4 minutes - the mixture is ready when it subsides slightly after each stir. Ask the family to stir too, and get everyone to make a wish. 3 Generously butter two 1.2 litre/ 2
pint bowls and put greaseproof paper in the bottom of each. Pack in the pudding mixture. Cover with a double layer of greaseproof paper or baking parchment, pleating it to allow for expansion, then tie with string (keep the paper in place with a rubber band while tying).
4 Stand each bowl on a large sheet of foil and bring the edges up over the top, then put another sheet of foil over the top and bring it down underneath to make a double package (making the puddings watertight). Tie with more string, and make a handle for easy lifting in and out of the pan. 5 Boil or oven steam the puddings for 8 hours, topping up with water as necessary. Remove from the pans and
leave to cool overnight. When cold, discard old wrappings and re-wrap in new greaseproof or baking paper, foil and string. Store in a cool, dry place until Christmas.
6 To make the brandy butter, cream the butter with the orange zest and sugar. Gradually beat in the brandy or cognac and chopped ginger. Put in a small bowl, fork the top attractively and put in the fridge to set. The butter will keep for a week in the fridge, or it can be frozen for up to 6 weeks. 7 On Christmas Day, boil or oven steam for 1 hour. Unwrap and turn out. To ame, warm 3-4 tbsp brandy in a small pan, pour it over the pudding and set light to it.

WINTER Written by Kate Cheshire
BLUES
Beat the winter blues by experimenting with different colours now the seasons are changing, its the perfect opportunity to make a change with your makeup as your clothes are changing too, here is one colour that suits most so go ahead and give it a try. Blue eyes can look amazing when applied alone or mixed up with different tones and shades, choose greys, blues and lavender to make your eye colour pop, for a sultry, sexy look go with the greys only, you can make the eyes look smoky by covering the whole lid and around the eye, take it underneath the bottom lashes with a dark grey and blend away the edges with a lighter grey or white. Always use a dark grey or dark navy eye pencil in and around the lashes to frame the eye when using blues as this will compliment the colours nicely. For a more fun/ everyday look use blues of any shade, apply a pale blue to the whole lid and a darker blue to the outer corners, try mixing shadow and pencil colours, grey shadow with blue pencil and blue shadow with grey pencil. Apply black or navy mascara to exaggerate the blue tones!
Its time to awaken your skin ready for winter, if you don't have regular beauty treatments then a DIY maintenance routine is a must to improving skin texture, tone and performance. Buff away dead summer skin cells by gently massaging an exfoliator into your skin follow with a foaming face wash to clear away any make-up and dirt, then repeat for a deep clean. Steaming is a great way to open congested pores so pull up a chair at the table and fill a large bowl with warm/hot water, add some drops of tea tree to help reduce any bacteria on the skin surface, hold a towel over your head and lean over the bowl in 3 minute bursts, dab excess water with damp cotton wool pads every time.
FACIAL
SELFIE
Now would be the time to apply a complexion-boosting face mask, anything containing vitamins or nutrients is always good, leave on for 10 minutes, then rinse. Add a mini massage to your routine to boost your circulation, simply cup your hands and sweep the skin up your neck and up to your jawline. Next use your thumbs to knead your jawline inwards towards the chin. Use your ring finger to make light circles around your eye area, then press along your brow to ease tension. Help smooth frown lines by using your index fingers to knead back and forth across your forehead. Finish by making light pinching movements all over your face! Motoring review
December
2019’s best new cars I
f you need proof that the motoring industry is undergoing a seismic shift, just take a look at the cars being launched in 2019. A significant proportion will benefit from emissions-reducing hybrid technology, or even be offered with purely electric power. Yet this doesn’t mean cars are becoming dull – far from it. The first-ever electric MINI has sharp looks, is destined to handle well and should accelerate like a hot hatch, too. Other electric newcomers include models from big hitters like Porsche and exciting new brands like Polestar. Important names in the UK’s car sales charts will be replaced, too: new versions of the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series, Peugeot 208, Vauxhall Corsa, Volkswagen Golf, SEAT Leon and Renault Clio are all big launches due in 2019.
Mini EV Much has been made of the new electric Mini, which will be built at the company’s Oxford factory. And it’s fitting that the original city car should now be going green with the arrival of the all-electric Mini EV in 2019. Not much is known about the batteries and motor but expect them to be similar to the system in BMW’s i3 (Mini is owned by BMW),
giving the new car a range of around 190 miles. The car is based on the design of the current Mini Hatchback, so it’s likely to look similar to the popular small car. However, it is likely to include some design features, including a distinctive grille, from the Mini electric concept car that was unveiled last year.
Audi A3 While the next Audi A3 hatchback isn’t expected to look dramatically different to its predecessor, it’s likely to feature lots of new technology. A lot of this will be focused on efficiency, so expect mild-hybrid powertrains that give small power and economy boosts, while also allowing the engine to switch off more of the time to reduce emissions. Driving assistance features and advanced safety kit should also make the A3 easier to drive and safer than before.
BMW 1 Series The next-generation BMW 1 Series isn’t expected to look hugely different from the outside, but there’ll be a big shift underneath. The 1 Series will share underpinnings with the BMW X1 and MINI Clubman, meaning front-wheel drive will replace the rear-wheel drive that until now has set the 1 Series apart in its class. Powerful versions will get fourwheel drive for extra traction and BMW has said the new layout will provide more passenger and boot space and better fuel-efficiency.

Peugeot 208
It’s all change for the next-generation Peugeot 208. The new model will be based on a new chassis and be capable of accepting all-electric power. Peugeot says it wants to become more upmarket than Citroen, but less so than DS, meaning the 208 should have a more desirable image than the current car. While the car’s dimensions won’t grow much, interior space will and it’ll be powered by a new generation of petrol and diesel engines.
Seat Leon
SEAT has embarked on a product offensive that’ll include an all-new SEAT Leon hatchback in 2019, with a plug-in hybrid set to follow in 2020. It’ll share technology with the Mk8 Volkswagen Golf, with new engines including 1.0 and 1.5-litre petrols and a 1.6-litre diesel. The first Leon plug-in will boast an all-electric driving range of around 31 miles before the combustion engine takes over.
Renault Clio
The fifth-generation Renault Clio will be a hugely important car for the French marque, and is expected to debut in 2019. It’s certainly needed, because the latest versions of the Ford Fiesta, SEAT Ibiza and VW Polo all launched
recently, featuring impressive new technology for the supermini class. Expect a restyle to bring the Clio’s looks in line with those of the current Renault Megane, as well as a more upmarket dashboard with a larger touchscreen and the possibility of a mild-hybrid powertrain for reduced running costs.
Volkswagen Golf Mk8
The evolution of the Volkswagen Golf is set to continue with the Mk8 model, ushering in a subtle makeover. Bigger changes are expected inside, where a fully digital dashboard is likely, along with new connectivity, safety and driver assistance features. Like many of the cars due in 2019, the Volkswagen Golf is also expected to be offered with mild-hybrid engines to bring down running costs.
Vauxhall Corsa
t’s all change for the Vauxhall Corsa in 2019, because the PSA Group’s takeover of Vauxhall and its German sister brand Opel means the next-generation of supermini will share many of its parts with the next Peugeot 208. They’ll sit on new underpinnings that have been designed from the outset to accommodate conventional, hybrid and electric powertrains. The first-ever electric Corsa is due to follow a year later in 2020.

Health Matters Four worst health mistakes N
one of us are perfect and we all make mistakes from time to time, but did you know that you could unknowingly be putting your health at risk right now? Take a look at five of the worst health mistakes you are making right now.
1 Poor posture Poor posture as a result of sitting at your desk all day can cause back and spine problems, headaches, poor circulation and reduced lung function. A number of research studies have found that prolonged periods of sitting can also put you at risk of developing conditions such as diabetes, increased blood pressure and heart disease, even if you are otherwise physically active. To sit in the correct position at your desk, push your hips back in the chair as far as they can go, ensure both feet are flat on the floor and your eyes are level with the top of the monitor. Although this might seem uncomfortable at first, your body will thank you for it.
2 Listening to music too loudly
You might listen to music during your commute, at the gym or while you’re at work but do you ever think about the volume you listen at? If you are frequently exposing yourself to music that’s too loud then it could cause lasting damage to your hearing. You won’t notice the effects of this health mistake right away, as the hearing problems (such as tinnitus) that come as a result of listening to loud music develop over time. Using noise-cancelling headphones will block out background noise that most people try to drown out by increasing the volume of normal headphones. Also, give your ears regular 20-minute breaks when listening to music to allow them time to recover.
3 Hitting the snooze button
The snooze button is many people’s best friend in the morning and some don’t even think about getting out of bed until they’ve hit it a few times, but as good as a few stolen minutes might feel at the time, it could be
bad news for your sleep patterns. When your alarm initially goes off your body prepares itself to get up, but when you hit the snooze button it can confuse your brain and leave you feeling groggy and more sleepy than when your alarm first went off. The best thing to do is to set an alarm that goes off at the same time every day and get up when it goes off. After so long, your body will get used to the consistency of waking up at the same time every day and eventually, your body may even wake up naturally at that time, without an alarm.
4 Brushing your teeth just after eating You’re probably thinking that brushing your teeth after eating is the right thing to do, but it can be harmful to your teeth. Brushing soon after eating anything acidic or sugary including fruit and juices can lead to weakened tooth enamel. Instead, brush your teeth before you eat anything acidic. You can rinse your mouth with water immediately after eating these foods, but avoid brushing until at least 40 minutes after you have consumed the acidic foods.

more expensive – so from approximately £45,000 (before VAT) depending on size and location. According to Nationwide Building Society, a modern extension on the ground floor can increase your property’s value by around 5%, while adding a bedroom to create a three-bed house will add about 12% to the potential asking price.
It’s time to start thinking about how you’re going to decorate your home this Christmas. Will you go with one of the more traditional Christmas colour schemes, with silver, gold, red and green? Or will you choose a more modern look incorporating bright and unusual colours? You can embrace the colour scheme in its entirety, or choose subtle decorations and accents. Have a look through these Christmas colour schemes and see what catches your eye. You never know, you might just surprise yourself!
When planning an extension, design rooms to be as big as possible, but without sacrificing too much of the garden or outdoor area – this can make a property feel out of balance and deter buyers. Check with the local planning office to see if you need permission to carry out building work. All home improvements on this scale must also comply with Building Regulations and be inspected and passed at key stages.
1. Go for gold
Don’t be afraid of a little bling! From soft, aged tones to brassy and rich bronze shades, gold adds warmth and elegance. It’s a no-brainer at Christmas, but gold can be used as an accent colour all year round to lift and finish a How to isadd value to your home simple room scheme. Plan a loft conversion
A loft conversion is the most cost-effective way to gain extra living space and you should be able to do it if your home was built before 1975 and/or the loft has a maximum headroom of 2.3m. Work on converting an attic costs from around £20,000 – although on average a dormer loft conversion with a double bedroom and en-suite bathroom is more likely to be in the region of £3545k – and takes about six to 12 weeks to complete. This configuration is the most popular option and, according to Nationwide Building Society, it could add an estimated 21% to the value of your home. Remember, take professional advice before you start to plan your loft conversion because it must meet building and fire regulations.
5. Shimmer with shiny silver
Associated with dazzle, silver must make it into your home this Christmas. The cold but glitzy colour creates a look that mimics a stylish winter wonderland. Create a bold centrepiece in the form of a shiny mirror and accentuate the shade by dotting silver candles and pots throughout the room. Finish the room off with a shimmering cushion and sparkly baubles.

Gardening
December in the garden In the flower garden
l Start to winter-prune your Wisteria, cutting back summer side-shoots to 2 or 3 buds. flowering bulbs for a magnificent start to next years display. l Prune climbing roses now; cutting away diseased or damaged growth and tying in any new shoots to their support. Prune older flowered side shoots back by two thirds of their length. l Leave the faded flower heads on your hydrangeas until the spring, as they will provide frost protection to the swelling buds further down the stems. l Gather up fallen leaves from around the base of rose bushes which suffered from blackspot or rust this summer, to reduce the chance of infection next year. l Move containers of shrubs or bedding plants to a sheltered spot; clustering them together helps protect the root systems from suffering frost damage. l Lift and store dahlia tubers once their leaves are blackened by frost. l Check climbers are securely attached with plant ties to their supports. l Plant up winter containers with hardy cyclamen, ivy, skimmia and evergreen grasses such as Carex to add colour to your garden. Place them in prominent places beside entrances and well used paths to enjoy their winter display. l Harvest holly with berries for making Christmas garlands and Christmas wreaths; stand them in a bucket of water until you’re ready to use them. l Plant some shrubs for winter interest. Sarcococca confusa adds colour and fragrance to your garden at this time of year. l If you still haven’t planted your tulip bulbs there is still time, provided the ground isn’t frozen.
74
In the vegetable garden l Lift the last of your leeks and parsnips before the soil becomes frozen, and heel them in to a trench beside a convenient path. They will keep well for several months like this and can be easily brought indoors when required. l Lift and divide established clumps of rhubarb to renew the plant’s vigour. Sections taken from the outside of the plant are better than those from the centre. l Dig over empty borders and pile manure on top - let the worms and frosts break up the clods of soil. l Try digging a trench where you will be growing your beans next year - fill it with compostable kitchen waste (not cooked food) and cover with soil again. This will rot down and improve the growing conditions for your beans. l Protect any remaining celery plants left in the soil by covering with straw or fleece. l Cover heavy clay soil with polythene to keep it drier and allow winter digging. l If you haven’t already, cut down dead asparagus foliage and the top growth of Jerusalem artichokes. Order your asparagus crowns now for planting in spring.
Lawn Care
l Avoid walking on your lawn when it is blanketed by heavy frost or snow, as this will damage the grass beneath. l If it’s a mild winter, continue to cut the lawn if it’s growing, but raise the height of the mower blades. l Spike lawns with a garden fork to improve drainage and aeration. l Keep clearing leaves off the lawn to let the light in and prevent dead patches appearing. l Send your lawnmower and shears to be serviced and sharpened while they are in less demand.

Fitness Matters Run safe this Winter
I
t’s the dark season, and with less hours of daylight for the next four months, chances are you’ll find yourself with no alternative but to train at night. Winter running can be done safely, however. Here are our tips. l With more hours of darkness, it is often difficult to find a time to run during daylight hours. Make it a priority to be “visible” by wearing light coloured and reflective materials so you stand out along the roads. Once the snow falls, switch to a dark, reflective running suit to contrast with the snow. Put a blinking light on your jacket in the front and back. l Avoid running at dusk and dawn, the visibility for drivers is the worst at those times of the day, especially when the sun is very low in the sky. l Run against the traffic flow so you can see what is coming. Every winter runners are hit by vehicles and don’t forget, the car always wins! l Carry your mobile phone for emergencies. l Dress in layers and avoid cotton in cold weather as it holds onto water and has little insulating value when wet. If you are really warm and comfortable at the start of your run, you will be too hot in mid and late run. l Wear a windproof, breathable, and “vent-able” shell to help regulate your heat loss.
l To keep your extremities warm, a hat can preserve heat and mittens are warmer than gloves. l Protect your sensitive areas with windblock underwear so you do not end up with frost bite in areas that really hurt. l On windy days run out against the wind and back with the wind; saves you from the headwind chill on the return run. l If you depend on your shoes for cushioning, remember that the cold stiffens the soles and the shoes will not be as forgiving as in the summer months. l A mesh shoe that is comfortable in the summer will be cold in the winter. l Snow and ice have the better traction when it is cold (-20 to 25 degrees F) than when it is near or at the freezing mark, so your risk of falling is greatest when the temperatures seem best for running. l 5 degrees F always feels colder in the black of night than in bright sunshine as there is no radiant heat, so dress accordingly. l Think about how you will stay warm if you fall and get injured; carrying a small, light pack with an extra layer is a good safety strategy. l Run with a friend so you can check each other for frostbite and help each other in an emergency. l Make sure someone knows your planned route and expected return time. If something happens, your family and friends will know when to be concerned and where to look for you.
