Ludlow

UDLOW is a thriving medieval market town and an architectural gem with a lively community feel, busy with events and festivals throughout the year. The historic town centre and the 11th century Ludlow Castle are situated on a cliff above the River Teme and are surrounded by the beautiful countryside of south Shropshire and the Welsh Marches. Ludlow is an excellent base for walking and cycling, as well as exploring the rest of Shropshire and the Welsh Marches. Ludlow has a reputation for the quality of its food and drink, with many excellent restaurants and cafes encouraged by the area’s abundance of quality food and drink producers. This is showcased every September when the town is filled with food lovers from all over the UK and beyond for the Ludlow Food and Drink Festival. From its ancient Castle to it’s peaceful back streets, exploring Ludlow is a real pleasure. A lively friendly feel combines with over 900 years of history; with many cafes, bars, shops, beautiful architecture and greenery all around; a visit to Ludlow will not disappoint.

Ludlow Castle The impressive ruins of the castle occupy the oldest part of Ludlow. Building of the castle started around 1086, with

many later additions in the following two centuries. It is one of the most interesting castles in the Marches, in a dominant and imposing position high above the river Teme. It features examples of architecture from the Norman, Medieval and Tudor periods. Ludlow Castle is open to the public from 10am to 4pm, 7 days a week (except Christmas Day and December & January weekdays).

The Buttercross

Occupying a prime location at the junction of Broad Street, High Street and King Street, The Buttercross (pic, left) is considered by most Ludlovians to be the centre of the town. Built in 1746, the ground floor was originally a butter market and is still used on market days by various traders. The upper rooms have had a variety of uses: the chamber for the Town Council, a boys’ charity school and the Ludlow Museum.

Ludlow Millennium Green Ludlow Millennium Green, situated by the River Teme and Dinham Bridge, is a popular destination for locals and visitors. It is one of the few areas of the river that can be freely and easily accessed. It is well worth a visit to just sit and relax and feed the ever hungry ducks swimming by. Or even to have a dip in the River Teme. A large green open space, ideal for picnics or soaking up some sun, the Millennium Green is in a beautiful location underneath the cliff that Ludlow Castle’s imposing ruins sit upon.

Drink Fes tival Eating in Ludlow There are currently several restaurants in or near Ludlow with entries in the current Michelin Guide, AA Restaurant Guide and Which? Good Food Guide. Ludlow offers a wide variety of restaurants, cafes, pub food and afternoon teas, as well as foreign cuisine from India, China, Thailand and Japan. There is an eating place to satisfy all tastes and budgets, many of which make a point of offering locally-sourced ingredients.

Cycling

Festivals and events Ludlow’s daily life is considerably enriched throughout the year by a series of festivals, fairs and carnivals - many set against the backdrop of Ludlow Castle. These include The Spring Festival, Ludlow Food and Drink Festival and the Medieval Christmas Fayre.

Ludlow and the surrounding south Shropshire countryside is also an ideal cycling area. The beautiful hilly countryside which includes the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty has many quiet country lanes, forest areas and planned routes to suit cyclists of all abilities.

Ludlow Walks Ludlow is surrounded by ideal countryside for walking. Walks from the town lead out to forests and farmland; the Shropshire Hills are a short bus or car ride away. Ludlow is at the start of the Mortimer Trail, a long-distance path to Kington on the Herefordshire/Wales border.

California Dreaming... Used T5 VW camper van buyer’s guide

ant to live the VW California dream, but don’t know where to start when browsing camper vans for sale? Read our top T5 tips – soon you’ll be on the road! Few vehicles are as iconic as the Volkswagen California and with the introduction of the T6, prices of used T5s mean that ownership of a nearly-new model is more accessible than ever. Here’s how to buy a used T5 VW camper van with confidence, thanks to our expert advice. It may be the name of a popular 1960s song, but ‘California Dreaming’ is also what many wannabe VW camper van owners do on a regular basis. The California had initially seen the light of day on Volkswagen’s T3, then converted by Westfalia Coachworks.

28Please mention Inside Flintshire Magazine when responding to advertisements

Coinciding with the launch of the VW T5 in 2003, the manufacturer announced that it was bringing the conversions in-house; but it wasn’t until 2005 when we first saw right-hand drive examples in Blighty.

Power units at launch ranged from a 1.9-litre 85bhp TD to a 2.5-litre 174bhp TD, all at Euro 4. Transmission was a five- or six-speed manual or a six-speed ASG robotised automatic gearbox.

The old maxim ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ could well have been coined to describe the longevity of the VW camper van layout: a run of kitchen furniture down one side with a rock-n-roll double seat/bed towards the rear. Swivelling cab seats add to the seating compliment. The layout was designed to make the most efficient use of space when the Volkswagen had a rear-mounted engine. It remains popular because it offers so much uncluttered floor space, important in a conversion of modest dimensions.

In 2009, the 2.0-litre Euro 5 engine was first fitted with either a six-speed manual ’box or the legendary super-smooth, seven-speed, dual-clutch DSG robotised automatic. Its 4Motion was an extra-cost all-wheel drive system.

Although the original VW California models offered a choice of roof type, this generation was stuck with a no-option, rear-hinged elevating one with fabric sides. Fair do’s, because it also offers oodles of standing room on site. At under 2m high when retracted, the VW T5 California will squeeze into many multi-storey car parks and will suffer less wind resistance on the road.

T5 VW Californias can be ordered in many shades and have an options list as long as a python. Be aware that there is a cheaper version called the VW California Beach which is really a minibus with seven seats, two beds and an elevating-roof. It isn’t really a camper van, but can be fitted with extra cost kitchen and storage modules.

Nearly all included VW’s BlueMotion Technology (BMT). This consists of four main features: cruise control (later, adaptive), low-rolling-resistance tyres, regenerative braking and a start/stop engine.

The essentials

Volkswagen California on SWB VW Transporter T5 ● Base vehicle built and converted in Germany between 2005 and 2015. ● Elevating-roof camper on the Caravelle/Multivan five-door people carrier. ● Overall length: 4.892m (16’ 6”).

What to look for

Parallel parking is made diffcult by the wardrobe blocking over-the-shoulder nearside rearward sight lines. It beggars belief on something sold as safe and child-friendly. Read more at https://www.practicalmotorhome. com/advice/39903-used-t5-vw-camper-van-buyersguide#39GRUEDjv1I2shFd.99

A full main dealer or commercial-vehicle specialist service history is essential. Some were available to VW staff as company vehicles; these may well have higher mileages than owner-driver leisure vehicles.

Conversion

It’s in a class of its own with special mouldings for a totally integrated look. Some find the bed suffers from transverse ridges, so try before you buy. The main snag is that VW didn’t hand the conversion for UK users, so a distracted parent could discharge the children into the road on the school run.

RECIPE Jamaican chicken with rice and beans When hunger strikes this healthy chicken with rice and beans dish will not only fill you up but provide plenty of nutrients, too, containing three of your five-a-day.

Ingredients l l l l l l l l l l

1 tbsp rapeseed oil 2 red onions, halved and sliced 4 chicken legs (about 1 kg in total), skin removed 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves 1 tbsp Madras curry powder 1 tsp ground allspice 4 large tomatoes, chopped 1 red chilli, deseeded and sliced 2 garlic cloves, chopped 2 tsp vegetable bouillon

For the rice and peas 125g brown basmati l 1 red onion, chopped l 2 garlic cloves, chopped l 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves, plus extra to serve l 1 tsp vegetable bouillon l 400g can black-eyed beans l

Step by step 1 Heat the oil in a very large non-stick frying pan and cook the onions for 5 mins or until soft. Meanwhile, coat the chicken thoroughly with the thyme, curry powder and allspice. Add to the pan and briefly brown the

Prep: 15min

chicken, then tip in the tomatoes, chilli, garlic and bouillon. Pour over 450ml water, cover and simmer for 30 mins or until the chicken is tender. 2 Meanwhile, tip the rice into a mediumsized pan with the onion, garlic, thyme and bouillon. Pour in 600ml water, cover and cook for 25 mins or until the liquid has been absorbed and the rice is tender. Check toward the end of the cooking time to ensure it isn’t starting to catch on the pan. Stir in the beans and heat through. If you’re following a diet plan, serve half the rice with half the chicken (saving the leftovers for a second meal later in the week). Otherwise you can serve four portions, scattered with a few extra thyme leaves, if you like.

Recipe tip If you have any left over, chill the remaining curry and rice straight away and store in the fridge. When serving it later in the week, heat through thoroughly in the microwave or in a pan until piping hot. You will need to add a dash of water to the rice to prevent it from sticking to the pan as it reheats.
