Ludlow
UDLOW is a thriving medieval market town and an architectural gem with a lively community feel, busy with events and festivals throughout the year. The historic town centre and the 11th century Ludlow Castle are situated on a cliff above the River Teme and are surrounded by the beautiful countryside of south Shropshire and the Welsh Marches. Ludlow is an excellent base for walking and cycling, as well as exploring the rest of Shropshire and the Welsh Marches. Ludlow has a reputation for the quality of its food and drink, with many excellent restaurants and cafes encouraged by the area’s abundance of quality food and drink producers. This is showcased every September when the town is filled with food lovers from all over the UK and beyond for the Ludlow Food and Drink Festival. From its ancient Castle to it’s peaceful back streets, exploring Ludlow is a real pleasure. A lively friendly feel combines with over 900 years of history; with many cafes, bars, shops, beautiful architecture and greenery all around; a visit to Ludlow will not disappoint.

many later additions in the following two centuries. It is one of the most interesting castles in the Marches, in a dominant and imposing position high above the river Teme. It features examples of architecture from the Norman, Medieval and Tudor periods. Ludlow Castle is open to the public from 10am to 4pm, 7 days a week (except Christmas Day and December & January weekdays).
The Buttercross
Occupying a prime location at the junction of Broad Street, High Street and King Street, The Buttercross (pic, left) is considered by most Ludlovians to be the centre of the town. Built in 1746, the ground floor was originally a butter market and is still used on market days by various traders. The upper rooms have had a variety of uses: the chamber for the Town Council, a boys’ charity school and the Ludlow Museum.

How to keep your house WARM ... part two this winter
L
ast month we gave you some handy tips on how to stay warm in your home during the cold winter months. Here are some more ideas to help keep you and your family cosy until spring - without breaking the bank!
Fill the floorboards
Stripped floorboards look fantastic, but the small gaps between the boards can really let cold air in. Try using a siliconebased filler to prevent draughts sweeping in through the gaps.
Insulate the doors
Whether your door is old or new, it could still benefit from fitting draught-proofing strips between the door and the frame. This can work for both internal and external doors. For gaps between the bottom of the door and the floor, you can buy a special ‘brush’ or hinged-flap draught excluder.
12
Use heavyweight curtains
Thermal-lined curtains can help you keep the cold out more effectively, especially if you have single-glazed windows. At the very least, make sure your curtains are lined.
Insulate the loft
If you’ve not done this, you could be losing up to a quarter of the heat in your home through the roof. It’s a bit like going out in the snow without a woolly hat! Insulating the loft, attic or flat roof is a simple and effective way to reduce that heat loss and slash those pesky heating bills. Loft insulation is effective for at least 40 years and it should pay for itself many times over.
Seal the skirting boards
Draught-exclude the letterbox
If you don’t already have a second flap or ‘brushes’ in your letterbox, you could fit either of these, which will help keep the warmth in.
Please mention Inside Flintshire Magazine when responding to advertisements
It may seem like a small change, but using sealant to fill the gaps between the top and bottom of your skirting boards can really make a difference - and it will save you money!

HE secret to a happy and healthy dog is to create a bond with them and remembering that dogs experience emotions similar to ours. So, they can get lonely and they can get scared. It’s also been proven that our emotions may impact that of our dogs so it’s important to look out for emotional upsets that may affect your dog too. There are a few things that you need to do to maintain that bond with your dog.
Never punish your dog
Play with your puppy
Verbal reprimands are included here. Punishment can only be conflicting to your dog and can cause frustration.
Play strengthens bonds and makes learning a faster and easier task.
Always make sure they have a safe place to rest By this, we mean a safe haven where all their favourite things are kept and it almost becomes a little den for them to escape from everything.
Ensure your dog’s positive welfare Make sure your dog’s emotional and psychological needs are met.
Listen to your puppy If your puppy isn’t happy to do something, don’t force them. Socialisation is for life, so this is a journey that lasts for the rest of their years.
Keep on top of your pup’s training Make sure you train your dog every day even if it’s just for a few minutes. Some owners will train their puppies but then forget that as they grow into adult dogs that they still need training. Make sure that you train your dog throughout their life. Pups are forever curious but their noses can often land them in trouble. The vets at Joii can help put your mind at ease from the comfort of your own home. How? Their services include a symptom checker, nurse clinics, and video vet consultations for pet owners to use whenever they need it and wherever they are.

It happened this month
... in2004: Janet and Justin’s Superbowl slip-up
A singular event occurred during the halftime show of the Super Bowl on February 1, 2004. While performing a duet with Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake briefly exposed a delicate part of her upper anatomy in what was later described as a “wardrobe malfunction.” The performance was airing live all around the world to an estimated audience of 143.6 million - and coincided with the rise of digital video recording and internet technology. It susequently became one of the most viewed, searched for and talked-about moments in the history of the internet.
... in1952:
Elizabeth becomes Queen
In early 1952, Elizabeth and Philip set out for a tour of Australia and New Zealand by way of Kenya. On February 6, they had just returned to their Kenyan home, Sagana Lodge, when word arrived of the death of the King and consequently Elizabeth’s immediate accession to the throne. Philip broke the news to the new queen. Asked her to choose a regnal name, she chose to remain Elizabeth, “of course”. She was proclaimed queen throughout her realms and the royal party hastily returned to the United Kingdom. She and the Duke of Edinburgh moved into Buckingham Palace. Elizabeth was crowned on June 2, 1953.
22
... in1983:
stolen
Shergar
Shergar was the most famous, and most valuable, racehorse in the world, and when he retired at the end of the 1981season, racehorse owners paid a staggering £10m for shares in his services impregnating mares. A year later, on February 13, 1983, kidnappers armed with handguns broke into the Ballymany Stud - owned, like the horse, by the Aga Khan - and forced the head groom, James FitzGerald, to load Shergar into a trailer. The hunt for Shergar continued for weeks, but to no avail. The police even enlisted the service of two mediums. No-one has ever admitted the theft of Shergar and the body has never been found. The most valuable horse in the world disappeared without trace.

Your stars for February Aries (March 21 - April 19)
If you are tempted to overspend, try to resist the urge. This is likely to be a very social period in your calendar and you may need to watch any potential strain on your finances. You will be in great demand on the social circuit and others will seek out your company.
Taurus (April 20 - May 20) Your patience could well be put to the test. There could be a situation where you will need to forgive and forget, rather than harping on about something that has irritated you. Your emotions may be up and down but mentally you will remain strong and able to deal with whatever may happen.
Gemini (May 21 - June 20) This could be a profitable period for those born under the sign of the Twins. You will be confident enough to take risks, and if you make investments this month, they may prove profitable in the future. An approach to your bosses about a pay rise may prove more successful than it has previously.
Cancer (June 21 - July 22) Cancer charts show you may need to slow down and take more care of your health. You may also need time to de-stress and get away from the workplace. A few hours of relaxation, especially at weekends, could be of great benefit to you.
Leo (July 23 - August 22) You are going to experience a certain amount of fulfillment where your career is concerned and much satisfaction will be gained from doing well and achieving your goals. Others will seek you out for advice which they will follow and your opinion could be much sought-after.
Virgo (August 23 - September 22) You will be dealing with a lot of money-related issues during this period and your horoscope predictions suggest that any financial speculations you make will be fruitful, though you will not indulge in impulsive spending; rather, you will be taking a more measured and careful approach.
Libra (September 23 - October 22) Life may slow down for Libra folk, offering some welcome rest from the recent whirl of activity, giving you time to spend with family and close friends. It is a time for quiet reflection, recovery and an ideal time to re-charge your batteries.
Scorpio (October 23 - November 21) This is likely to be a spiritual phase for Scorpions where you will be in a reflective and contemplative mood. It is entirely likely that stepping back from the business in your life will make you spiritually stronger. Don’t feel guilty about taking time out to relax.
Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21) Sagittarians may see the need to sort out minor issues in personal relationships. It would be beneficial to all concerned if both parties could listen to the other and act directly and quickly upon what has been said. You may need to curb their idealism and learn to be more practical in their relationships.
Capricorn (December 22 - January 19) You may feel a bit fragile - whether this is due to stress at work, family problems or simply that your work/life balance is off-kilter. In any case, Capricorns could find alternative therapies very helpful, especially when symptoms like tiredness, headaches and indigestion are vague annoyances.
Aquarius (January 20 - February 18) Your finances will be in great shape during this phase and there could be an influx of money which you didn’t know was coming. Meanwhile, karate senseis Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) confront their never-ending feud’s far-reaching consequences.
Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer 1 season This chilling documentary looks at the life and crimes of serial killer Richard Ramirez, who would become known as ‘The Night Stalker’. Ramirez terrorised the Californian cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles in the mid ’80s and this new true-crime series brings his gruesome murders back into focus. The stoey is pieced together from first-person interviews with those close to the case.
Riverdale 5 seasons
Starring: K.J. Apa, Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes Creator: Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa
The latest season of the Archie Comics adaptation follows classic characters Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead. The first few seasons of the show were a delight. When Riverdale first appeared on our screens, it was wonderful and weird. Dubbed a teenage Twin Peaks, it mixed high-school melodrama with eerie murder mystery. After a faltering fourth season, fans will be hoping the fifth outing returns to its formerheights.

VERYTHING about the car is deliberately normal. It’s called a 208, for starters, and you order it as an engine variant rather than as a standalone model. It also shares the same handsome design as its ‘thermic’ siblings, as Peugeot calls the petrol and diesel versions. The look evokes Peugeot’s ‘80s variant, the 205, in its overall shape; C-shaped glasshouse that forms a near-replica rear pillar, and light bar across the curved rump. Pure electric signifiers are rare: an ‘e’ symbol on the side, a colour-shifting bonnet badge and body-coloured grille inserts – nothing too distracting.
Specs and range info
Thanks to a water-cooled 50kWh battery pack mounted below the floor, cockpit space and boot space are - you’ve guessed it – identical to the
the standard 208, the steering wheel’s the size of a cotton reel, which despite its tiny stature can obscure the fancy 3D instrument binnacle with its varied depth, staggering layers of information. It’s a high-quality environment, with a gloss black centre console, wireless charging pad behind a rotating flap that snaps shut with the crispness of a guardsman’s salute, and a delightful carbon-effect layer that twists its way across the dashboard.
Drive
Press the throttle and the Peugeot e-208 accelerates briskly for its kind. In Sport mode, the e-208 sails from standstill to 62mph in 8.1sec - that’s half a second quicker than the punchiest 130bhp petrol version. The motor’s operating window limits top speed to 93mph. It’s all so serene: there’s an absence of combustion
Peugeot e-208 ...the same, but electric
thermic 208s. And spinning the front wheels in true supermini fashion is a 100kW electric motor (producing up to 136bhp in old money). Regeneration - which we’ll get to later - is crucial to boost range, which has been homologated at 211 miles using the latest WLTP test cycle. Charging on a single-phase AC wallbox takes 7.5 hours, but the e-208 can handle 100kW DC rapid charging.
Interior
There’s a curved transmission selector which you pull back for reverse, neutral or e-drive, and pull again to alter the regenerative braking feel. Like 34
chatter and tyre rumble is well suppressed on this smooth test track. The pillow-soft ride on 16-inch wheels intensifies this feeling of wellbeing. There’s plenty of grip in corners, but the steering feels a little too light and at times inconsistently weighted as you push through a turn.
Please mention Inside Flintshire Magazine when responding to advertisements
And then there are the brakes, always a tricky element to integrate in an electric car, with that blend from the initial deceleration caused by the motor switching to energy capture mode and the deployment of the good old-fashioned friction pads. The e-208 offers two levels of regenerative braking: imperceptible and barely perceptible. Lift off the accelerator, and the Peugeot gently slows, as if coasting in a combustion car. In the more assertive setting, deceleration is slightly more pronounced, as is the whine of the motor.
Price and battery warranty
Peugeot will back its battery pack with an eight-year, 100,000-mile warranty, and certify its capacity when you come to sell your used EV. It’s all part of a broad range of services, from an app that helps you remotely
control charging, pre-heat the car or check its range. Such features are a normal part of the electric driver’s life. And the e-208 is a conspicuously normal supermini. It doesn’t stand out like the Honda E or Mini Electric, which will cost broadly the same as the circa-£28,000 Peugeot (before £3500 EV subsidy). Those cars may find themselves stuck within the city limits, due to their puny, sub-150-mile ranges. The e-208 should feel equally at home in the city, with its compact package, peppy takeoff from traffic lights and zero-emissions capability. But with its comfy, civilised air at motorway speeds and 200-odd miles of range, it won’t be stuck there. Just like a normal car.

Spring in the garden
S
PRING is on its way! Each new flower heralds its arrival as the garden comes to life again. It’s easy to get caught up in the anticipation, but we gardeners remain at the mercy of the weather.
Don’t start sowing seeds – they will probably fail as soon as we have another cold snap. Instead, have a go at these seasonal garden projects, some for outside and some to do indoors on a rainy weekend.
dehydrate birds, so don’t give them these.
Save money by making your own bird fat balls! This nocook recipe is great fun to do with the kids. See details at the bottom of the page. Throughout spring, you can also help birds to build nests by putting supplies near the feeder. Birds will appreciate bunches of twigs and dried moss.
More next month...
Plant roses for Valentines’ Day Why buy them roses as cut flowers when you can grow your own? There is a rose variety to suit every garden, and now is a great time to plant them.
Rose plants come three ways: bare-root varieties from mail-order suppliers have been dug up from the soil and need to be replanted quickly. Secondly, garden centres stock containerised versions of these. The third option is container-grown roses, which come with their own soil and simply need planting out in the garden. Roses need plenty of nutrients, so enrich the soil with lots of organic matter before planting.
Help your garden birds
The UK’s wild bird population is falling. Since the 1970s alone, we have lost 71% of starlings and 50% of house sparrows, with awhopping 52 species at risk. But gardeners can help. Just putting out some food and water can help wild birds to survive, especially during these cold months. Great bird food includes bird seed mixes, peanuts, black sunflower seeds, bird cakes and fat balls. However, salted peanuts, dried bread and desiccated coconut can

Fat ball method
1 Mix one part suet to two parts seed in a saucepan and gently heat, stirring until the fat melts. 2 Use an ice cream scoop, or mould with your hands, into balls. If you want them to hang from a tree thread some string through them. 3 Space apart in a plastic container or on a tray and place in the freezer to set firm. 4 Once the fat balls are solid, put in the garden, on a bird feeder or in a fat-ball feeder.

MURDER DURING THE HUNDRED YEARS WAR The Curious Case of Sir William Cantilupe
AUTHOR: Melissa Julian-Jones Highlights Since his murder in 1375, the death of Sir William Cantilupe has remained one of the ultimate medieval mysteries of all time. This is a story full of political intrigue and scandal, bribery, sexual deviation, personal grudges and family disloyalty. It is a narrative about relationships gone wrong, shifting loyalties and power struggles, especially between a knight and his squire Eghting during the Hundred Years War. In 1375, Sir William Cantilupe was found murdered in a Field outside of a village in Lincolnshire. As the case progressed, fifteen members of his household were indicted for murder, and his armour-bearer and butler were convicted. Through the lens of this murder and its context, this book will explore violence, social norms and deviance, and crime and punishment ‘at home’ during the Hundred Years War. The case of William Cantilupe has been of interest to historians for many years, ever since Rosamund Sillem brought it to light in her work on the Lincolnshire Peace Rolls in the 1930s, but this is the first time it has received a booklength treatment, taking relationships between the lords and their 46 62
servants into account. The verdict guilty of petty treason makes this one of the first cases where such a verdict was given, and this reveals the deep insecurities of England at this time, where the violent rebellion of servants against their masters (and wives against their husbands) was a serious concern, enough to warrant death by hanging (for men) and death by burning (for women). The reader is invited to consider the historical interpretations of the evidence, as the motives for the murder were never recorded. The relationships between Sir William and his householders, and indeed with his own wife and whether the jury were right to convict him and his alleged accomplice in the first place. About the Author
