January
What’s hot: Trending holidays for 2018 As we shiver our way through another winter, we can’t help thinking ahead to summer 2018. We’re not the only ones, either. We’ve already started noticing trends in where people are searching for their next getaway – and what they’re looking to do when they get there. Want to know what’s looking hot? Here’s the inside track…
Private yacht charters
Freedom, adventure and a whole lot of style - crewed yacht charters are new for us for 2018, and we think they’re going to prove to be a big hit. The yachts themselves provide a serious taste of luxury, with en-suite cabins, al fresco dining decks and gourmet meals cooked to order by your private chef (expect to have the most Instagrammable of holiday snaps!). As for the experience of taking to the water, one moment you could be mooring up in the Bay of Naples (or hopping ashore on Hydra island, orwandering around Hvar Town), the next you could be sitting on deck watching the sun set with a glass of your favourite wine. Not a bad way to spend a week…
Croatia
Croatia
Croatia has soared in the popularity stakes over the past couple of years and it’s not hard to see why. Holidaymakers are being lured by the country’s historic towns and cities (and not just Dubrovnik – Split, Rovinj and Pula are all hotspots), UNESCOawarded sites, breathtaking beaches and
6
spectacular national parks. The festival scene is a draw, too. The short flight time (UK flights touch down in under three hours) is also a bonus, plus Croatia’s not part of the euro zone, making those afternoon cocktails and seafront suppers even more appealing.

Multi-centre holidays
Kefalonia: Its unspoilt landscape is attracting lovers of the outdoors.
Greece
Greece has always been a firm favourite, but each year we tend to see a new island or strip of coast that people have got the hots for. For 2018, it’s the islands of Santorini, Kefalonia and Zakynthos that have got people talking. With a gorgeous colour scheme of blue and white, and views so unbelievable photos don’t do them justice, Santorini is the perfect hotspot for a romantic break away. Then there’s Kefalonia. Often overlooked in favour of its northern neighbour, Corfu, Kefalonia’s upmarket yet low-key towns are stealing the attention away from traditional glitz-and-glamour spots like St-Tropez. Head south of Kefalonia and you have Zakynthos, an Palma’s historic island that’s shaken off its cathedral... party reputation with the help of an influx of luxe hotels (and one of the most ... and Olivar Market photogenic beaches in Greece).
Multicentre holidays
Multi-centre holidays aren’t a new thing, but for 2018 we’re seeing much more interest in people looking for multi-centres in the same country, and even on the same island. Take Majorca, for example. The island is so diverse, why not hire a car and stay a few nights in two
separate parts? Team a beach break with a few days of shopping and culture in Palma, or twin the sandy bays of the north with the mountain towns along the west coast. Tempted by our talk of Croatia earlier? It’s another destination that’s great for a multi-centre holiday – kick off in Dubrovnik, before driving along the coast for a few days on the Split Riviera.
Multi-generation family holidays
Family holidays are going big in 2018, with parents, kids, grandparents and even aunts and uncles joining the gang. Hotels are making it easy for bigger groups to all stay under one roof comfortably too, with luxe villas set within the hotel grounds. Families can enjoy the facilities of a hotel with all added space and home comforts of a villa. Gran and grandad could be in the private pool with the kids while mum heads to the spa, the whole family can sit down to a laid-back meal on the terrace (or wander down to the hotel’s restaurant if no-one fancies cooking), and adults can uncork a bottle of wine in the lounge after the kids have gone to bed for the night. California Dreaming... Used T5 VW camper van buyer’s guide
ant to live the VW California dream, but don’t know where to start when browsing camper vans for sale? Read our top T5 tips – soon you’ll be on the road! Few vehicles are as iconic as the Volkswagen California and with the introduction of the T6, prices of used T5s mean that ownership of a nearly-new model is more accessible than ever. Here’s how to buy a used T5 VW camper van with confidence, thanks to our expert advice. It may be the name of a popular 1960s song, but ‘California Dreaming’ is also what many wannabe VW camper van owners do on a regular basis. The California had initially seen the light of day on Volkswagen’s T3, then converted by Westfalia Coachworks.
10
Please mention Inside Flintshire Magazine when responding to advertisements
Coinciding with the launch of the VW T5 in 2003, the manufacturer announced that it was bringing the conversions in-house; but it wasn’t until 2005 when we first saw right-hand drive examples in Blighty.
Power units at launch ranged from a 1.9-litre 85bhp TD to a 2.5-litre 174bhp TD, all at Euro 4. Transmission was a five- or six-speed manual or a six-speed ASG robotised automatic gearbox.
The old maxim ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ could well have been coined to describe the longevity of the VW camper van layout: a run of kitchen furniture down one side with a rock-n-roll double seat/bed towards the rear. Swivelling cab seats add to the seating compliment. The layout was designed to make the most efficient use of space when the Volkswagen had a rear-mounted engine. It remains popular because it offers so much uncluttered floor space, important in a conversion of modest dimensions.
In 2009, the 2.0-litre Euro 5 engine was first fitted with either a six-speed manual ’box or the legendary super-smooth, seven-speed, dual-clutch DSG robotised automatic. Its 4Motion was an extra-cost all-wheel drive system.
Although the original VW California models offered a choice of roof type, this generation was stuck with a no-option, rear-hinged elevating one with fabric sides. Fair do’s, because it also offers oodles of standing room on site. At under 2m high when retracted, the VW T5 California will squeeze into many multi-storey car parks and will suffer less wind resistance on the road.
T5 VW Californias can be ordered in many shades and have an options list as long as a python. Be aware that there is a cheaper version called the VW California Beach which is really a minibus with seven seats, two beds and an elevating-roof. It isn’t really a camper van, but can be fitted with extra cost kitchen and storage modules.
Nearly all included VW’s BlueMotion Technology (BMT). This consists of four main features: cruise control (later, adaptive), low-rolling-resistance tyres, regenerative braking and a start/stop engine.
The essentials
Volkswagen California on SWB VW Transporter T5 ● Base vehicle built and converted in Germany between 2005 and 2015. ● Elevating-roof camper on the Caravelle/Multivan five-door people carrier. ● Overall length: 4.892m (16’ 6”).
What to look for
Parallel parking is made diffcult by the wardrobe blocking over-the-shoulder nearside rearward sight lines. It beggars belief on something sold as safe and child-friendly. Read more at https://www.practicalmotorhome. com/advice/39903-used-t5-vw-camper-van-buyersguide#39GRUEDjv1I2shFd.99
A full main dealer or commercial-vehicle specialist service history is essential. Some were available to VW staff as company vehicles; these may well have higher mileages than owner-driver leisure vehicles.
Conversion
It’s in a class of its own with special mouldings for a totally integrated look. Some find the bed suffers from transverse ridges, so try before you buy. The main snag is that VW didn’t hand the conversion for UK users, so a distracted parent could discharge the children into the road on the school run.

DISCOVER NORTH WALES
Conwy Castle and town walls . Conwy Castle and the town walls were built, on the instruction of Edward I of England, between 1283 and 1289, as part of his conquest of the principality of Wales. The church standing in Conwy has been marked as the oldest building in Conwy and has stood in the walls of Conwy since the 14th century. However, the oldest structure is part of the town walls, at the southern end of the east side. Here one wall and the tower of Llewellyn the Great’s Llys [court house] have been incorporated into the wall. Built on a rocky outcrop, with an apsidal tower, it is a classic, native, Welsh build and stands out from the rest of the town walls, due to the presence of four window openings. It dates from the early 13th century and is the most complete remnant of any of his Llys. People born within the town walls of Conwy in north Wales are nicknamed “Jackdaws”, after the jackdaws which live on the walls there. Abbey Conwy was the original site of Aberconwy Abbey, founded by Llywelyn the Great. Edward and his troops took over the abbey site and moved the monks down the Conwy valley to a new site at Maenan, establishing Maenan Abbey. The parish church still retains some parts of the original abbey church in the east and west walls. English settlers were given incentives to move to the walled garrison town, which for decades the Welsh were forbidden from entering. Suspension bridge. Conwy has other tourist attractions that help draw visitors to the town. Conwy Suspension Bridge, designed by Thomas Telford to replace the ferry, was completed in 1826 and spans the River Conwy next to the castle. Telford designed the bridge’s supporting towers to match the castle’s turrets. The bridge is now open to pedestrians only and, together with the toll-keeper’s house, is in the care of the National Trust. Aberconwy House. The National Trust also owns Aberconwy House, which is Conwy’s only surviving 14th-century merchant’s house, one of the first buildings built inside the walls of Conwy. Plas Mawr Another fine house open to the public is Plas Mawr, an Elizabethan house built in 1576 by the Wynn family, which has been extensively refurbished to its original 16th-century appearance and is now in the care of Cadw. Smallest house in Great Britain The house named in the Guinness Book of Records as The Smallest House in Great Britain, with dimensions of 3.05 metres x 1.8 metres, can be found on the quay. It was in continuous occupation from the 16th century (and was even inhabited by a family at one point) until 1900 when the owner (a 6-foot (1.8 m) fisherman – Robert Jones) was forced to move out on the grounds of hygiene. The rooms were too small for him to stand up in fully. The house is still owned by his descendants today, and you can go on a tour around it for a small charge.

Bring to the boil, cover, reduce the heat to mediumlow and simmer for 12 -15 minutes.

5. Add the sugar snap peas, stir and increase the heat to medium-high.
6. Cook for another 10 -15 minutes, or until the
chicken is cooked through and the veg is tender. It’s quick, tasty and mega easy to throw together after a long day at work. The last thing you want to be doing it slaving over a hot stove for hours on end!
Tip: Try swapping diet cola for diet orange for a tasty change.

House to home
January How to keep your house warm this winter Our top tips for insulating your home against the cold will ensure you and your family stay snug until spring. Whether you’re after small steps to make your home that little bit toastier or are looking at completely refurbishing it to make it
3 Insulate the doors
Whether your door is old or new, it could still benefit from fitting draught-proofing strips between the door and the frame. This can work for both internal and external doors. For gaps between the bottom of the door and the floor, you can buy a special ‘brush’ or hinged-flap draught excluder.
4 Draught-proof loft hatches
Try installing draught strips around the frame to your loft hatch. The door itself can also be insulated, usually with a polystyrene slab on the upper side.
5 Seal the windows
Draught-proofing strips work well around opening casements. Draughts also occur in cracks between the window frames and the surrounding walls – it’s worth considering using sealant or putty in these.
6 Use heavyweight curtains
as energy efficient as possible, there are plenty of things you can do to prevent unwanted draughts. We’ve put together some tips on how to keep your house warm in winter, and have also asked a few experts for their pointers on staying snug.
1 Seal the skirting boards
It may seem like a small change, but using sealant to fill the gaps between the top and bottom of your skirting boards can really make a difference.
2 Fill the floorboards
Stripped floorboards look fantastic, but the small gaps between the boards can really let cold air in. Try using a silicone-based filler to prevent draughts sweeping in through the gaps.
Thermal-lined curtains can help you keep the cold out more effectively, especially if you have single-glazed windows. At the very least, make sure your curtains are lined.
Draught-exclude the letterbox
If you don’t already have a second flap or ‘brushes’ in your letterbox, you could fit either of these, which will help keep the warmth in. You can fit a purpose-made cover that drops a metal disc over the keyhole to prevent any wind whistling through. Simple but effective.
7 Install a chimney balloon
This will prevent any unnecessary draughts. If you don’t use the chimney at all, you could consider having it capped by a professional.
8 Repoint any brickwork
Any gaps in bricks on external walls can lead to unwanted and unnecessary wind coming into the home. You can top up mortar between the bricks to stop this happening (though it might be worth considering a professional to do this).
9 Before laying a carpet, fit underlay
The carpet and underlay for flooring that you choose can also make a big difference to your home’s insulation. According to the experts at Carpetright, getting the right underlay for flooring can save you as much as 15 per cent off your energy bills.

JANUARY Beauty Tips
The winter shield There is no reason why anyone can't have beautiful healthy skin at this time of year, your skin, unlike the other organs in your body you can apply creams and lotions directly to change its condition in an instant. The skin has to be the easiest part of the body to maintain and you will have a guaranteed satisfactory result if your willing to put the work in. There is absolutely no reason why you can't have a healthy glow throughout your life even if it does mean adding a little makeup to boost the appearance of your skin on those "off" days! To keep your skin looking healthy over these winter months and to maintain its natural, protective moisture, follow a daily routine of cleansing, toning and moisturising with nothing that contain perfumes or too many chemicals as this will strip the skin of its natural oils destroying the acid mantel leaving it vulnerable and dry. Exfoliate at least once a week with a gentle scrub. 50
Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Laugh and smile daily, this is a fabulous way of exercising your facial muscles and keep them toned. Always protect and hydrate your skin as much as you can by using creams that contain SPFs and put as much goodness into your skin by choosing good quality products that contain antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Holiday review
Croatia
Croatia has soared in the popularity stakes over the past couple of years and it’s not hard to see why. Holidaymakers are being lured by the country’s historic towns and cities (and not just Dubrovnik – Split, Rovinj and Pula are all hotspots), UNESCOawarded sites, breathtaking beaches and
70
spectacular national parks. The festival scene is a draw, too. The short flight time (UK flights touch down in under three hours) is also a bonus, plus Croatia’s not part of the euro zone, making those afternoon cocktails and seafront suppers even more appealing.

Gardening Tips For
JANUARY
January might be the middle of winter and usually the coldest month but as the days lengthen the garden starts to grow. Now is a great time to plan for the coming gardening year and to order seeds and plants. Enjoy the fresh air, on dry sunny days, and check your winter protection, stakes, ties and supports are still working after any severe weather. Also put out food for birds and leave some garden areas uncut, a little longer, to provide shelter for wildlife in your garden. Lawns Watch your lawn for signs of water logging, as the weather gets wetter. If you missed the opportunity to carry out autumn lawn maintenance, then you can still remedy the situation a bit, by spiking the lawn with a garden fork or mechanical aerator. Then fill the holes with a mixture of sharp sand and loam, brushed in using a stiff broom. If your lawn suffers dieback from treading during the wet, muddy season, then consider laying stepping-stones through it to allow easy access across it without causing damage. Trees and shrubs In warmer zones, protect tender trees and shrubs from surprise frosts by covering them with burlap draped over a simple wooden frame or plant stakes. Inspect stakes and wires on newly planted trees, to make sure they are still straight and not damaging the bark. Stake leggy plants to protect from wind or ice breakage. Leave snow in place as an insulator – remove (gently!) only if the weight of the snow threatens to break the plant. Do not attempt to remove ice. Hold off on pruning spring-flowering shrubs until after they bloom. Inspect your winterized roses – make sure they are firmly tied and covered.
Flowers & Plants Sweet peas can be sown this month. Sweet peas sown earlier in the autumn can now be potted on taking care not to disturb the roots too much. Place them on a sunny windowsill, or on a high shelf in the greenhouse that gets plenty of light. This is the last chance to sow seeds that need frost in order to germinate (such as native tree and shrub seeds, and alpine plants). Rake up any winter debris and leaves off your borders to keep them tidy. Clear up any weedy beds ready for mulching in the spring. Keep tubs and containers tidy, cutting back and removing debris regularly. They can be mulched with compost or grit. Grit is aesthetically pleasing, and will reduce the surface puddling that can occur when light composts are beaten into a solid ‘cap’ by raindrops. Raise patio containers onto feet or bricks, if you have not done so already, to avoid them sitting in the wet.
Don’t use salt on frozen driveways and sidewalks it can damage surrounding plants. Instead, use sand, organic kitty litter, or sawdust. Winter pond care Monitor the water level of your pond, as hard frosts can cause defects in the liner and in concrete structures. If the water level drops considerably, then it may have developed a leak. Be sure to keep it topped up until repairs can be carried out in the spring. Wild Birds Please! Feed the birds and other small creatures that may not be able to find food due to snow on the ground or other causes. For only a few pounds you can feed an enormous number of birds. Recycle your Christmas tree as a bird feeder. Feed the birds and provide them with some unfrozen water.

Finance
Money saving tips The last year will be remembered for many things, but it won’t go down in history as the most prosperous year for personal finances. With the New Year just around the corner, here are some financial resolutions to help make the most of your cash.
Haggle for broadband, insurance and mobile phone deals
You can simply be saving hundreds of pounds by haggling for your services like broadband and insurance. We recently found the average annual saving made on telecom bills is £156. Before you make the call, quickly make a note of a better deal you’ve seen or spend a few minutes checking a price comparison site. Your current provider is likely to ask you what better deals you’ve seen. Having these details to hand will make them believe you’re prepared to leave, even if you’re not. In most cases, the haggling itself will be quick and easy – no more than a few minutes.
Switch your energy provider
Around 16 million people – over half (58%) of energy customers – are stuck on standard variable tariffs with a ‘Big Six’ provider, the default and usually most expensive tariff. Renters and homeowners with the ‘Big Six’ could save up to £330 a year by moving to the cheapest dual fuel deal on the market this winter. To compare deals visit a comparison site, a transparent and impartial way to compare energy tariffs and find the best gas and electricity supplier.
Keep your travel spending in check
Holidaymakers could save over £100 a week by opting for an overseas spending card or credit card instead of buying currency at the airport. You will find that credit cards or debit cards, such as Halifax Clarity and Metro Bank (credit and debit), or prepaid cards such as Revolut, provide the best value for tourists for a trip within Europe.

Savings accounts/ISAs
Take a look at all your savings accounts, ISAs and current accounts. Are they giving you the best return on your money? If not, switch to a better account. If you don’t need instant access to all your savings, consider investing. There is, of course, the risk that your investments will go down as well as up. But in the current market, there’s also a risk of your cash savings being eroded by inflation.
Lifetime ISA
The Lifetime ISA is a new taxfree savings or investments account designed to help under-40s buy their first home or save for retirement, where you can earn up to £32,000 in free cash from the government.
The Lifetime ISA was available from 6 April 2017.
Debt consolidation
If you’re paying interest on your debt, get it moved to a 0% balance-transfer credit card. Some of these charge 0% interest for up to three years, which means you could be saving hundreds of pounds in interest and start paying off your debts. However, it’s important that you clear the debt before the end of the 0% period to avoid being charged at the standard APR – typically around 18.9%.
Stay in/join your company pension scheme
A pension might be the last thing on your mind if you’re in your 20s. In most cases, the government and your employer contribute to your pension. This is the main reason for people joining company pension schemes – it’s like receiving additional pay from your employer. Contributions aren’t liable for income tax, which is another plus. You can usually take some of your workplace pension as a lump sum when you retire. And you can withdraw 25% of that tax-free.
‘There’s never been a better time to take control of your money.’
