1 tbsp rapeseed oil 2 red onions, halved and sliced 4 chicken legs (about 1 kg in total), skin removed 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves 1 tbsp Madras curry powder 1 tsp ground allspice 4 large tomatoes, chopped 1 red chilli, deseeded and sliced 2 garlic cloves, chopped 2 tsp vegetable bouillon

Prep: 15min

chicken, then tip in the tomatoes, chilli, garlic and bouillon. Pour over 450ml water, cover and simmer for 30 mins or until the chicken is tender. 2 Meanwhile, tip the rice into a mediumsized pan with the onion, garlic, thyme and bouillon. Pour in 600ml water, cover and cook for 25 mins or until the liquid has been absorbed and the rice is tender. Check toward the end of the cooking time to ensure it isn’t starting to catch on the pan. Stir in the beans and heat through. If you’re following a diet plan, serve half the rice with half the chicken (saving the leftovers for a second meal later in the week). Otherwise you can serve four portions, scattered with a few extra thyme leaves, if you like.

Recipe tip If you have any left over, chill the remaining chicken and rice straight away and store in the fridge. When serving it later in the week, heat through thoroughly in the microwave or in a pan until piping hot. You will need to add a dash of water to the rice to prevent it from sticking to the pan as it reheats.

We absolutely love the Celtic Arms not only in the Winter when the log burners are blazing and it’s all cosy in one of the many nooks but also in the summer on the large decked area overlooking the scenic views of the beautiful surrounding of the country park.

Once we had decided on our beverages it was time to pursue the menu which is always a real treat as the Celtic arms prides itself in sourcing the freshest tastiest local produce and using this and the creative genius of the chefs to ensure all the dishes not only taste amazing but look outstanding too. For starters we went traditional but with a seasonal twist so Reg opted for Port & Chicken liver Pate whilst I went for the Prawn and Crayﬁsh cocktail. Both dishes were presented superbly and we could not wait to tuck in. The Pate was Port & Chicken Liver served with toasted Foccaccia, celery stalks and an apple

green beans and a creamy white wine sauce. There is nothing more wonderful than perfectly seared, tender and cranberry chutney, the rich pate had a subtle but warming taste of Port to it and married well with the sweet zing of the apple and cranberry sauce. The Prawn and Cray fish cocktail was extremely tasty with crisp iceberg lettuce ,celeriac and chunks of apples smothered in delicious creamy Marie Rose sauce and then served with a hearty buttered bloomer. The service was first class the moment our starters were finished they were

cleared away and the table was set up for our main course, we weren’t kept waiting long before our main course arrived which I must say looked outstanding a master piece created by the chef we were both eager to tuck in but not keen on spoiling the culinary work of art on our plates. Reg had gone for a lighter option than his usual steak and chips so opted for Seabass ﬁllet which was served with a chive and sun blush tomato mash, ﬁne

fish fillets with crispy skin. The fish was flavoursome and served with the most delicious accompaniments especially impressive was the chive and sun blush tomato mash it was divine and worked amazingly with the creamy white wine sauce and the delicate flavours of the seabass.

I opted for the beautifully roasted seared Duck fillet which was served pink and tasted as good as a piece of fillet steak it was accompanied with a delicate sweet orange and Cointreau reduction and then on the side was a dollop of creamy mash and buttered dressed cabbage all I can say is wow it melted in your mouth and all the flavours worked

unbelievably well together 5 stars to the chef! We were adamant we had indulged far too much for a dessert but Jose tempted us with the menu and we could not possibly resist. Reg plumped for Caramelised Apple & Gingersnap Cheesecake with a lime Coulis and I had the Black forest roulade with boozy cherries & Chantilly cream. All I can say is we were in a food coma and dessert heaven they were both to die for and deﬁnitely the icing on the cake to a superb meal from the surroundings, the ambiance, the staﬀ, service and of course the wonderful chef and 5-star food! Well done The Celtic Arms we now have their sister restaurant The Plough in near Congleton on our to do list!

TECH TALK D printing or additive manufacturing is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file. The creation of a 3D printed object is achieved using ‘additive’ processes. In an additive process an object is created by laying down successive layers of material until the object is created. Each of these layers can be seen as a thinly sliced horizontal cross-section of the eventual object.

3D printing is the opposite of normal ‘subtractive’ manufacturing which is cutting out/hollowing out a piece of metal or plastic with for instance a milling machine. It enables you to produce complex shapes using less material (and producing less waste) than traditional manufacturing methods.

How does 3D printing work?

MOTORING Renault Captur 2020 T

he Renault Captur was introduced in 2013, thrust before a UK just getting used to the idea of small hatchbacks made to look like SUVs. This previous model was surprisingly multi-talented and better looking than the average offering, helping it sell extremely well and giving this all-new model for 2019 a lot to live up to. Particularly because today the UK isn’t just ready for small SUVs; it’s going crazy for them. The competition is now stronger than ever for the Captur, which has fresh challenges from cars like the Volkswagen T-Cross, Skoda Kamiq and Seat Arona.

optionally on S Edition trim, are also less visually impressive and configurable than in other small SUVs too. All-told, both the Kamiq and T-Cross are stronger here.

That means the Captur’s boot, at 536 litres with the seats pushed forward is the largest of any small SUV, and at 422-litres with them all the way back is seriously competitive.

Still, the quality of materials inside are high and the Captur’s space is great. Adults in the front will have no complaints and the driver enjoys decent visibility and an easily-adjustable driving position. In the back the Captur is similarly impressive, managing to seat a couple more adults in comfort, even if three across the back will prove tight.

There’s plenty of choice when it comes to the Captur’s engines and gearboxes, with three petrols, two diesels and a plug-in petrol-electric hybrid due to arrive soon. An automatic ‘box with seven speeds, or five and six-speed manuals are available, depending on the engine.

But the Captur has a party trick - its rear bench can slide forwards and backwards, trading rear legroom for boot space.

To fend off this little lot, Renault’s contender has been completely overhauled. Outside, it has new C-shaped LED running lights, LED headlights as standard, a wider grille, re-designed bumpers and larger alloy wheel options. It’s still a Captur, but it’s all grown up. Inside the Captur has moved also on, getting a new infotainment system, slicker design and upgraded materials. And, because the Captur is taller, wider and longer than before mainly between its front and rear axles - there’s more space for people inside, particularly in the back. Entry and mid-level Capturs get a 7in portrait infotainment system without built-in sat-nav but featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as DAB radio and Bluetooth. Mid-level Iconic then adds built-in sat-nav to this same system. Then, range-topping S Edition models get a larger 9.3-inch system with sat-nav. All-in-all, the new screens are highres, but in all three cases the native menus and response times don’t live up to the better systems in alternatives. Renault’s digital dials, available

strikes a good balance between price, performance and fuel economy. If you spend more time on the motorway, then the 113bhp diesel will make more financial sense. Company car driver or have reliable access to charging? Don’t write off the hybrid, as it will prove to be extremely efficient in the right circumstances. In any of its guises the Captur is no thriller to drive, but few (if any) small SUVs are. More importantly it steers precisely and feels grippy and stable through turns. Where it doesn’t live up to cars like the VW T-Cross is on comfort and noise, proving a little bumpy in town and less hushed on the motorway than the VW. Which leaves the Renault Captur in a favourable position among the huge, and growing, number of small SUVs available these days. It’s not quite the most rounded of them all, but more importantly with this type of car, if you love the way it looks, the Captur is well worth your cash.

IN THIS MONTH 1971: Ibrox stadium disaster

1934

On Saturday, January 2, 1971, 66 people were killed in a crush as supporters tried to leave Glasgow Rangers’ Ibrox Stadium. In the last minute of an Old Fim fixture, Glasgow rivals Celtic took a 1–0 lead; however, in the final moments, Rangers equalised.

On January 5, 1934, motorcyclist Arthur Grant claimed to have nearly hit a creature while approaching Abriachan (near the north-eastern end of the loch) at about 1am on a moonlit night. According to Grant, it had a small head attached to a long neck; the creature saw him, and crossed the road back to the loch. Grant, a veterinary student, described it as a cross between a seal and a plesiosaur. It was suggested that this was a faulty observation due to the poor light conditions.

At the same time, as thousands of spectators were leaving the ground by stairway 13, it appears someone fell, causing a massive chain-reaction pile-up of people. It was the worst British football disaster until Hillsborough in 1989. Glasgow Rangers FC were later ruled to be at fault in a sheriff’s judgement on one of the deaths. They not dispute this ruling, and were sued for damages in 60 other cases brought by relatives of the dead.

1973: UK joins the EEC The United Kingdom’s membership of the EEC came into effect on January 1, 1973. Previous applications to join in 1963 and 1967 were vetoed by the President of France, Charles de Gaulle, who said that “a number of aspects of Britain’s economy, from working practices to agriculture” had “made Britain incompatible with Europe”.

The scientific community regards the Loch Ness Monster as a phenomenon without biological basis, explaining sightings as hoaxes, wishful thinking and the misidentification of mundane objects.

On January 14, 1954, mobbed by reporters and fans, movie legend Marilyn Monroe married New York Yankees baseball hero Joe DiMaggio. The ultimate All-American romance lasted only 274 days. Tension started to build, particularly around DiMaggio’s discomfort with his wife’s sexy screen image. By October they were divorced, with Monroe accusing her husband of “mental cruelty”.

1994: Tonya Harding v Nancy Kerrigan On January 6, 1994, the day before the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, Tonya Harding’s rival Nancy Kerrigan was attacked in a corridor after a practice session at the Detroit Cobo Arena. She was struck on the knee with a baton by Shane Stant, hired by Harding’s ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly. The attack on Kerrigan received a substantial amount of publicity and news media crews camped outside her home.

By the time Prime Minister Edward Heath signed the Treaty of Accession in January 1972, exports from Britain to western Europe were outstripping those to Commonwealth countries and the Confederation of British Industry were advocating the importance of panEuropean investment, collaboration and coordinated industrial policy.

1985: The Sinclair C5 goes on sale The brainchild of Sir Clive Sinclair, the C5 was essentially a small one-person battery electric velomobile, technically an “electrically assisted pedal cycle”. Unveiled at a glitzy launch on January 10, it received a less than enthusiastic reception from the British media. The vehicle’s limitations – a short range, a maximum speed of only 15 mph, a battery that ran down quickly and a lack of weatherproofing – made it impractical for most people’s needs.

FITNESS f you've decided it is time to start walking for health, fitness, and weight loss, you've already taken a great first step. Walking is an effective, natural way to achieve the daily physical activity amount recommended for weight management and good health.

Walking helps you burn calories and fat, which is necessary for weight loss. The recommendation is 60 minutes a day a few times a week. Recent research has found that those who chewed each mouthful 40 times ate nearly 12 per cent fewer calories than those who chewed just 15 times, proving that taking your time over each mouthful could have huge benefits for your waistline.

Many people think that healthy food is low fat food (and vice versa) - however you needn’t cut out all fats in order to lose weight. In fact, monounsaturated fats - found in avocados, olive oil and nuts - can actually help weight loss. While it's still important to monitor your consumption of fat, studies have shown that eating a diet rich in monounsaturated - and low saturated fats can help promote weight loss.

4. Eat more frequently

1. Get more sleep Sleep - and the lack of it - can affect your willpower and motivation to exercise or generally eat sensibly. Sleep will also affect your stress levels and, if overly stressed, your body increases its levels of cortisol, an appetite stimulant. If you don't receive the necessary rest to reduce this stress, you can find yourself consuming extra food. Studies have found that those who get enough sleep eat almost 300 fewer calories than those who are sleep-deprived.

2. Eat breakfast Although you may be tempted to skip breakfast to cut calories or save time, eating a filling breakfast can help curb your hunger, preventing snacking throughout the day or overeating at lunchtime. This is because the metabolism is believed to be more efficient in the morning - eating breakfast can kickstart your metabolism and continue burning through the day. Breakfasts also stop your body entering a state of starvation and will prevent your body storing any food you eat later in the day.

3. Eat slowly It generally takes a minimum of 20 minutes to start feeling full, so slowing down the speed in which you eat will mean that you start feeling full after less. Simple tricks can help you slow how fast you're eating; chewing more thoroughly for example, not only takes up time between bites, but also helps your digestive system by breaking down more food before entering the stomach.

While increasing the number of meals you eat may sound counter-productive, eating five small meals (rather than three larger ones) can actually help you lose weight. This is largely because eating more frequently throughout the day will not only keep the hunger at bay, but help maintain good energy levels and keep your metabolism burning. All of these factors will encourage you to keep from overindulging or reaching for those easy-energy, high-sugar foods that satisfy your cravings and energy levels.

5. Start exercising By adding in some exercise, you can see the benefits of losing weight without having to cut your diet.

Studies have shown that a third of women consume nearly half their calories during or after dinner, resulting in a substantial amount of unused calories. The average person should aim to consume around 200 calories - guilt free - after dinner, but eating large amounts of food before bed will not only add to your the amount of fat stored, but can also slow the digestive system, encouraging weight gain.

GARDENS ere are some great ideas which will make your garden look extra special this winter.

A well-placed container close to a doorway, window or path really makes an impact, especially once winter begins to pare the garden back to basics. But you must use a robust, frost-hardy container.

Shopping for plants Ignore any specimens with battered leaves or shabby branches and gather together the best you can find in one trolley - choosing more foliage plants than flowering plants as sumptuous leaves are much more important in winter than flowers. When you’ve assessed what’s available, decide on your foliage theme. Golden plants light up shade and go very well with blues. Rich greens vibrate in winter light and they look best with reds and cool whites.

Give your garden some winter colour From top: Sibirica, Myrtifolia and Aurea.

l ‘Crotonifolia’ - high-gloss plant with large green leaves liberally speckled with bright gold. l ‘Emerald Gem’ - invaluable, tight bun-shaped mound of tiny bright green leaves. l ‘Ferox Argentia’ (Hedgehog holly) compact, slow-growing male holly with prickles all over the leaf. l ‘Myrtifolia’ - a dense, neat male holly with purple shoots and small elliptical, dark-green leaves edged in spines. l ‘Green Pillar’ - an upright slender female with dark-green leaves and red berries. l ‘Gulftide’ - a slow-growing, holly look alike with twisted leaves dark-green leaves and fragrant white flowers. l ‘Goshiki’ - holly like leaves mottled in green and yellow.

Before you plant Position the pot before you plant as once the soil and plants are added the weight may be too great to move it afterwards. If the drainage hole is small stand the pot on three pot feet to aid drainage.

Arranging plants Start off by placing your key plant on the ground and arrange your chosen plants around it roughly in the shape of the container. Look at each plant individually and make sure that the plant is showing its best side (most plants have a ‘back’ and a ‘front’). Fill the container about two thirds full. Remove the key plant from its pot by pressing firmly on the pot base and gently upending it. Check the root ball: if the roots are potbound, gently tease them out and straighten them.

Position the key plant in the soil in a central position. Arrange the other plants quickly -to avoid damaging foliage and then carefully back fill with compost and then water.

Suitable plants for winter containers Evergreen shrubs l ‘Kew Green’ - large, conical heads of pale green buds. l ‘Rubella’ - clusters of wine-red buds.

Grass-like foliage l ‘Ogon’ - erect fountain of green and gold. l ‘Variegata’ - solid olive-green leaves margined in cream. l ‘Aurea’ - soft, butter-yellow rosette of strappy leaves. l ‘Nigrescens’ - low-growing black strappy leaves - excellent with red flowers.
