hether you’re suffering from post-holiday blues or simply want to get organised for 2019, there’s nothing quite like booking a holiday to lift your spirits. Whether you’re after all-inclusive holidays, cheap holidays, family holidays or even staycations, there’s an abundance of breaks on offer - but sometimes it can feel like a daunting task to search out the best deals. And then there’s when to book. Do you book as early as possible? Is it better to hang on and chase a bargain later in the year? And when is the best time bag cheap flights? Our guide will help you work out how to navigate the forest of offers to help you plan your next holiday.

The rules are simple - book before the end of February to stand a chance of getting the holiday you want without having to compromise. You already know that going away in the school holidays is more expensive, so there is no point in having to settle for second best by picking from what is left at the last minute.

On top of that, you’ll find the prices for family-based hotels with the facilities you want for a stress-free trip tend not to get discounted, so book now to insure against holiday disaster. The big tour operators, such as TUI and Thomas Cook, often offer free child places or prices from as little as £1, online booking discounts and low deposits to help you get the best price. Meanwhile Virgin Holidays often hosts flash sales with discounted packages to a whole host of exotic destinations. For summer holidays, it’s worth checking out online travel agents such as Travel Republic,

OnTheBeach or LoveHolidays; they tend to use low-cost flights for beach destinations, and the only direction that prices go for the peak summer dates is up. So get in early before prices start to escalate.

Tip: Opt for the middle weeks of the school holidays rather than the beginning or end and avoid travelling at weekends to keep costs as low as possible.

Can you go any time? If you know what you want, then don’t waste another minute.Get online, visit high street travel agents too, and plan that trip as soon as you can. Compare all the prices and deals on offer and get that booking made. Even if prices do come down later date, you’ll have secured what you want at a price you were happy to payand will now have something to look forward to. If you’re planning on waiting until nearer the time, then you’ll need to steel yourself for the roller coaster ride of looking for a deal. If you play the game well, then off-peak package holiday prices can often drop like a stone, with the best last-minute deals being found for travelling to the Med in May and June or in September and October. The biggest reductions in recent years have been to Greece, as

Whether you want to take in the majesty of the iconic York Minster, journey back in time at JORVIK Viking Centre or discover the city’s grisly past at the York Dungeon, there’s an attraction to suit everyone. If you’re only in York for a short time, make sure to tick these must see attractions off your list!

A fix of winter sun could be just the tonic after the excesses of Christmas and New Year. Or maybe you fancy the thrill of some winter sports action on the slopes?

Tip: Sign up to all the email newsletters from your favourite airlines and operators to ensure you know when seat sales start.

Long Haul holidays

Either way, last-minute prices are on offer for departures almost through to Easter so if you are ready to go, then get online for the best deals now. Mainstream destinations, such as the Canaries, Red Sea and the Spanishspeaking Caribbean islands, offer some of the best savings with deals of up to 60% off brochure prices with the big tour operators. Tunisia, Malta and the Spanish Costas are on offer from around £125 upwards for a week’s winter sun. Even ski and snowboard breaks can be found from as little as £250 for self-catering trips to France (but don’t forget to add lift passes and any equipment hire to those costs). Tip: Organise your travel insurance, holiday money and airport parking all online before you go using a comparison site to get the best possible prices. You’ll save a fortune.

It’s definitely sale time with a raft of deals on offer – but the best prices tend to be for departures from March to June. This is simply down to the fact that a large part of the holiday cost is driven by the air fare, and airlines currently have some great sales on to attract passengers for those months.

City breaks January is a fantastic time to book a short break to a fascinating city for travel before the summer. Airlines have sales on now and before flights fill up you can pick up some amazing prices to popular places, especially in Europe.

So companies such as Kuoni and British Airways Holidays pass on those savings in the form of price reductions. It’s vital you compare all the deals on offer and you are unlikely to find any huge savings on trips at Easter at this late stage.

If you can avoid weekend travel, then you’ll shave more off your flight. And if you can stay on a Sunday night, you’ll often find hotel prices for that night are lower.

If you’re planning to travel later in the year, then it may pay to hold back and wait for better airline deals - although summer dates to places such as the USA and

(September 23 - October 22)

This will prove to be an extremely romantic year for those born under the sign of Libra. You will experience excellent compatibility with loved ones, and in partnerships there are going to be some very happy times. Even if you are not feeling on top of the world at the beginning of the year, by the end of it you will find that you have a real skip in your step.

SCORPIO

(October 23 - November 21)

It’s probable that your drive and intense focus on your work will bring excellent rewards this year, both in terms of your career and any business deals you manage to set up. Certainly, great gains and considerable wealth could come to you from your professional life. You deserve all the accolades that come your way, and the likelihood is that you will accept them graciously and modestly.

2019 will be a year where you look to the future. You will be in a positive frame of mind and ready to embrace the changes that come your way. If you have stagnated in the past, then this is most likely going to be the year when you have a focus. It is a time for making plans for the future and looking forward, not back, while remaining upbeat in the face of adversity and opposition.

GEMINI

SAGITTARIUS

(May 21 - June 20)

In business and professional matters, 2019 will bring fresh challenges, with a considerable amount of success to follow. Your determination to succeed, your focus and your ability are all factors that will make this an extremely positive year for you. Others could be envious of your success and may try to undermine you, so be on your guard.

CANCER

CAPRICORN

(June 21 - July 22)

(November 22 - December 21)

You may well find yourself overseeing changes in the forthcoming calendar year. There could be a significant career change which will engender a feeling of excitement and positivity. On the home front, there are unlikely to be any changes and recent events in your love life may cause you to question exactly what is going on, what you feel about it and how you intend to resolve any issues.

(December 22 - January 19)

Luck will favour both men and women born under the water sign of Cancer this year. Your natural instincts will alert you to the important things to worry about, so try not to get bogged down by trivia and learn how to best prioritise your time. Careful management of your personal resouces will see you fly through this period, and as 2020 dawns you’ll wonder what all the fuss was about.

2019 could prove rather slow moving for you and you might find yourself thinking of ways to speed things up. If you have time on your hands, why not inprove your own personal skill set through additional training. Since you dislike being idle, you could find much enjoyment in embarking on a new training course. This in turn could spark off new professional opportunities in the year ahead.

LEO

AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18)

(July 23- August 22)

2019 has the potential to be a really exciting year for Lion people. If you are thinking about extending your family, planning for a new baby, this could be the perfect time. It will also be a very pleasurable spell for those not interested in having more children. Much of the year will find you in very convivial company and you will enjoy partying and being part of a wider social group.

VIRGO

Aquarians could find that 2019 will give an opportunity to focus on hobbies and interests. You will be physically active, enjoying both your work and your home life. For single Aquarians, there could be the beginnings of a new romance. For those already in partnerships you will feel happy and content and the communication between the two of you will be excellent.

PISCES

(August 23 - September 22)

You may be in a dreamy mood for much of 2019. Your focus will be on your own professional development and you may already have your eyes set on a new goal. You can be assured that your boss has already noticed you and you have nothing to worry about. Don’t be surprised if a new and unexpected opportunity comes your way and makes a dream a reality.

(February 19 - March 20)

You may find yourself in a more reflective state this year. You will be very intuitive and in touch with other people’s emotions as well as your own. It could be a very mystical time for some Pisceans, where spirituality is likely to be the main focus. You will be generous with your time and ready to tackle your own personal problems in a more grounded and mature way.

Horoscopes ARIES

2019

(March 21 - April 19)

After an excellent 2018 when Lady Luck was on your side, the Aries forecast for the year ahead promises another positive period where you truly feel you can make a difference. There will be lots of progress made in all areas of your life and Aries people will watch with pride as their carefully thought out plans finally reach fruition.

TAURUS

(April 20 - May 20)

It’s probable that your drive and intense focus on your work will bring excellent rewards this year, both in terms of your career and any business deals you manage to set up. Certainly, great gains and considerable wealth could come to you from your professional life. You deserve all the accolades that come your way, and the likelihood is that you will accept them graciously and modestly.

GEMINI

(May 21 - June 20)

In business and professional matters, 2019 will bring fresh challenges, with a considerable amount of success to follow. Your determination to succeed, your focus and your ability are all factors that will make this an extremely positive year for you. Others could be envious of your success and may try to undermine you, so be on your guard.

CANCER

(June 21 - July 22)

Luck will favour both men and women born under the water sign of Cancer this year. Your natural instincts will alert you to the important things to worry about, so try not to get bogged down by trivia and learn how to best prioritise your time. Careful management of your personal resouces will see you fly through this period, and as 2020 dawns you’ll wonder what all the fuss was about.

LEO

(July 23- August 22)

2019 has the potential to be a really exciting year for Lion people. If you are thinking about extending your family, planning for a new baby, this could be the perfect time. It will also be a very pleasurable spell for those not interested in having more children. Much of the year will find you in very convivial company and you will enjoy partying and being part of a wider social group.

VIRGO

(August 23 - September 22)

You may be in a dreamy mood for much of 2019. Your focus will be on your own professional development and you may already have your eyes set on a new goal. You can be assured that your boss has already noticed you and you have nothing to worry about. Don’t be surprised if a new and unexpected opportunity comes your way and makes a dream a reality. 18

What do your stars have in store for you in the coming year?

LIBRA

(September 23 - October 22)

This will prove to be an extremely romantic year for those born under the sign of Libra. You will experience excellent compatibility with loved ones, and in partnerships there are going to be some very happy times. Even if you are not feeling on top of the world at the beginning of the year, by the end of it you will find that you have a real skip in your step.

SCORPIO

(October 23 - November 21)

2019 will be a year where you look to the future. You will be in a positive frame of mind and ready to embrace the changes that come your way. If you have stagnated in the past, then this is most likely going to be the year when you have a focus. It is a time for making plans for the future and looking forward, not back, while remaining upbeat in the face of adversity and opposition.

SAGITTARIUS

(November 22 - December 21)

You may well find yourself overseeing changes in the forthcoming calendar year. There could be a significant career change which will engender a feeling of excitement and positivity. On the home front, there are unlikely to be any changes and recent events in your love life may cause you to question exactly what is going on, what you feel about it and how you intend to resolve any issues.

CAPRICORN

(December 22 - January 19)

2019 could prove rather slow moving for you and you might find yourself thinking of ways to speed things up. If you have time on your hands, why not inprove your own personal skill set through additional training. Since you dislike being idle, you could find much enjoyment in embarking on a new training course. This in turn could spark off new professional opportunities in the year ahead.

AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18) Aquarians could find that 2019 will give an opportunity to focus on hobbies and interests. You will be physically active, enjoying both your work and your home life. For single Aquarians, there could be the beginnings of a new romance. For those already in partnerships you will feel happy and content and the communication between the two of you will be excellent.

PISCES

(February 19 - March 20)

You may find yourself in a more reflective state this year. You will be very intuitive and in touch with other people’s emotions as well as your own. It could be a very mystical time for some Pisceans, where spirituality is likely to be the main focus. You will be generous with your time and ready to tackle your own personal problems in a more grounded and mature way. To advertise text ADVERT to: 07446 778 482

Balti Chicken with Recipe Spinach & Tomatoes Method

1 Put the chicken in a bowl and add the lime juice, curry powder and a twist of pepper. Cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for at least 20 minutes.

2 Spray a large wok or frying pan with low-calorie cooking spray and place over a medium-high heat. Add the cinnamon stick, cardamom pods, chilli and cumin seeds, and stir-fry briefly just

to colour and release their fragrance. Add the onion, garlic and ginger and fry for 3-4 minutes, until the onion starts to colour lightly. Add the chicken and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes, or until sealed.

3 Mix together the ground coriander, turmeric, cumin and garam masala; add to the pan. Stir, lower the heat to medium and cook for 1-2 minutes. 4 Pour in the passata and 150ml water,

then stir in the pepper. When starting to bubble, lower the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes. Add the cherry tomatoes and simmer for 2-3 minutes. Add the spinach and coriander, turning once just to wilt. Season to taste and add a splash more water if required.

5 Remove the cinnamon stick, cardamom pods and chilli. Serve with rice.

Ingredients ● 4 skinless chicken breast fillets, cut into bite-size pieces ● Juice of 1 lime ● 1 tbsp medium curry powder ● Salt, freshly ground black pepper ● Low-calorie cooking spray ● 1 cinnamon stick ● 4 cardamom pods, lightly crushed ● 1 red chilli, left whole ● 1 tsp cumin seeds ● 1 large onion, finely chopped ● 3 garlic cloves, crushed ● 1 tsp grated fresh root ginger ● 1 tsp ground coriander ● 1 tsp turmeric ● 1 tsp ground cumin ● 1 tsp garam masala ● 400ml passata ● 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and cut into small chunks ● 100g cherry tomatoes (whole) ● 80g baby spinach ● A small handful of fresh coriander leaves, finely chopped ● Lime wedges, to serve

How to keep your house warm in winter That happened fast, didn’t it? One minute it’s a balmy 20 degrees C and the next it’s below zero – and your thermostats is suddenly seeing some action! However, staying warm can be expensive, which is why we felt the need to come up with some tips for insulating your home against the cold properly this winter. They’ll keep your family cosy until spring, without breaking the bank! Whether you’re after small steps to make your home that little bit toastier or are looking at completely refurbishing it to make it as energy efficient as possible, there are plenty of things you can do to prevent unwanted draughts.

Install a chimney balloon It’s no good spending thousands on triple glazing and loft insulation if you then let cold air in through the chimney. The University of Liverpool calculated households lose around 4 per cent of total heat up the chimney, so a highquality block that prevents draughts could save you over £200 a year. If you don’t use the chimney at all, you could consider having it capped by a professional.

well around opening casements,’ she tells us. ‘Draughts also occur in cracks between the window frames and the surrounding walls – it’s worth considering using sealant or putty in these.’

Use heavyweight curtains Thermal-lined curtains can help you keep the cold out more effectively, especially if you have single-glazed windows. At the very least, make sure your curtains are lined.

Draught-exclude the letterbox Fill the floorboards Stripped floorboards look fantastic, but the small gaps between the boards can really let cold air in. Try using a silicone-based filler to prevent draughts sweeping in through the gaps.

Insulate the doors Whether your door is old or new, it could still benefit from fitting draughtproofing strips between the door and the frame. This can work for both internal and external doors. For gaps between the bottom of the door and the floor, you can buy a special ‘brush’ or hinged-flap draught excluder.

Seal the windows Here’s another tip from Claire at uSwitch. ‘Draught-proofing strips work

If you don’t already have a second flap or ‘brushes’ in your letterbox, you could fit either of these, which will help keep the warmth in.

Seal the skirting boards ‘It may seem like a small change, but using sealant to fill the gaps between the top and bottom of your skirting boards can really make a difference,’ says Claire Osborne, energy expert at uSwitch.

Fit underlay The carpet and underlay for flooring that you choose can also make a big difference on your home’s insulation. According to the experts at Carpetright, getting the right underlay for flooring can save you as much as 15 per cent off your energy bills.

FRESH YEAR -FRESH SKIN!

Time to spruce up your skin, do your skin products take your skin to the limit? does it resurface, re- texturise and deliver vital nutrients into your skin?

If it doesn't then you need to re-think your choice of products, they should be doing a lot more than just giving you a good wash, or acting as a temporary softener. You need to look after your skin no matter what age you are and a facial should become part of your skin care routine, once a week is a good start, plan it when you know you have enough time as a thorough facial routine if including a mask needs a significant amount of time, ie Sunday mornings or while in the bath. What ever cleanser you choose ensure you are generous on application, the cleanser will be removed so using too much isn't a problem, the key is to use enough of the product to allow a good slide, massage your face with this product always in an upwards motion, circle around the eyes to help rid of excess fluid and dark circles. A good face mask needs to be applied for no more than 20 minutes, most active ingredients will be absorbed within 15 minutes, take a tip, if your not in the bath fill a bowl with warm water and pre steam your face before you apply a mask, this will begin to open pores and will allow the ingredients of the mask to be absorbed more rapidly and penetrate even deeper. This method can also be used to help remove setting masks, it softens the mask to enable a gentle removal rather than dragging the skin unnecessarily. Go modest on the moisturiser, it doesn't need to sit on top of your skin and you can always add more! A comforting thought is that you are giving back your skins vital nutrition just by adding a small amount of attention to your skin, you can also be helping to tighten and define facial contours, helping to restore a youthful vitality! , Skin can be rebound with a soft, supple texture and a healthy-looking glow!

SIMPLE SKIN TIPS!

Exfoliate at least once a week

Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated

This weather can be wearing on our patience and more importantly our skin, there is no reason why anyone can't have beautiful healthy skin in these weather conditions, unlike the other organs of your body you can apply creams and lotions directly to change its appearance and health in an instant. The skin has to be the easiest part of the body to maintain and you will have a guaranteed satisfactory result if your willing to put the work in, there is absolutely no reason why you can't have a healthy glow throughout your life even if it does mean adding a little makeup to help on those "off" days! To keep your skin looking healthy over these winter months and to maintain its natural, protective moisture, follow a daily routine of cleansing, toning and moisturising with nothing that contain perfumes or too many chemicals as this will strip the skin of its natural oils and dry it out.

Laugh daily, this is a fabulous way of exercising your facial muscles and keep Always protect your skin as much as you can by using creams that them toned contain SPFs and put as much goodness into your skin by choosing good quality products that contain antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

Take time to massage in every product you apply to encourage a deep absorption and to help tone skin and muscles.

What does it cost to Motoring run an electric car? T

here are several benefits to owning an electric car; along with environmental brownie points, electric vehicles (EVs) get tax grants, and are also exempt from certain congestion charges. However, one of the most obvious – but often unquantified – benefits of owning an EV are the low running costs. We’ll say it now: an electric vehicle will cost potentially far less than a diesel or petrol equivalent given the same use. But how much cheaper are they? Keep reading to find out.

How to calculate running costs for an electric vehicle (EV) Every electric car comes with a different-sized battery. The capacity

50

of a battery is usually expressed in kilowatt hours (kWh), a measure of the energy storage available. So to calculate how much it costs to charge your car, simply look at the cost of electricity (either your home supply or at a public charging point) and do the maths. Every electric car comes with a different-sized battery. The capacity of a battery is usually expressed in kilowatt hours (kWh), a measure of the energy storage available. So to calculate how much it costs to charge your car, simply look at the cost of electricity (either your home supply or at a public charging point) and do the maths. Let’s consider a 100kWh Tesla Model S. A typical public rapid charging point in the UK currently charges around 35p per kWh, so the cost is 100 x 35p = £35 if you were to theoretically charge from completely empty to full. Switch to a cheaper home supply, which could cost 12p per kWh on a good-value overnight

tariff, and the maths works out at a more palatable 100 x 12p = £12. That’s a major saving over the cost of a £70£100 petrol/diesel tankful for a typical executive car.

How much does it cost to charge an electric car? Just like conventionally-powered vehicles, electric cars come in different shapes and sizes, and will therefore have varying costs per mile. For this article, we’ve studied the running costs of a cheap and cheerful Renault Zoe, comparing it to the other vehicles so you can get a better idea of just how much it costs in the real world. Don’t forget you’ll need to add the initial cost of of a home-charging point to these prices, and that’ll set you back around £850 to £1250, including parts and labour. Grants are currently available from the government to subsidise the cost of installation.

Please mention Inside Flintshire Magazine when responding to advertisements

Running costs of a Renault Zoe EV compared and analysed The cost of the Zoe over three months are as follows. We used a 66-mile round-trip journey to work and back as a benchmark, and studied the real-world costs of rival long-term fleet cars for comparison. Before we get into these figures, it’s important to note that these cars are driven by different people with different driving styles, and also that the Leaf’s figures were attained during the winter months; don’t forget that colder weather usually means less efficient batteries. Renault Zoe cost per mile: 6.1p Renault Zoe commute cost: £4.03 Compare this with the Nissan Leaf: Nissan Leaf cost per mile: 4p Nissan Leaf commute cost (est) £2.64 We’ve also compared the same 66-mile journey to the similarly-sized VW Golf GTE plug-in hybrid: VW Golf GTE cost per mile: 11.5p VW Golf GTE commute cost: £7.66 Compared to the Toyota C-HR hybrid (non plug-in), you’ll find the following running costs: Toyota C-HR hybrid cost per mile: 13.4p

Toyota C-HR hybrid commute cost: £8.84 The above suggests that when it comes to hybrids, an electric car is around 50% cheaper. But interestingly, when comparing the running costs of a diesel or petrol car, you’ll find less of a difference. Citroen C3 BlueHDi 100 cost per mile: 10.6p Citroen C3 BlueHDi 100 commute cost: £7.00 Meanwhile, the Suzuki Swift – which is powered by an efficient 90bhp 1.2-litre petrol engine, and driven very efficiently - bears the following costs: Suzuki Swift 1.2 Dualjet 4x4 cost per mile: 8.7p Suzuki Swift 1.2 Dualjet 4x4 commute cost: £5.74

How much cheaper are an EV’s monthly costs? Victory for the Zoe, then. And just to make the advantage clear, multiply those commuting costs by five for a typical working week, and then that by four to get an estimate of the monthly difference, and so forth. It’s advantage electric car all the way.

Electric car charging in the UK This is more real-world than a science lab test, and we’ve taken the figures of different drivers for different cars – but the trends are obvious. Don’t forget our running costs only take into account the daily commuting we’ve done; add in extra miles done at weekends and in the evenings, and you’d be saving even more money.

What about public charging of EVs? Home charging is generally cheaper than public charging. However, when you consider that 80% of electric car owners charge at home, according to BP Chargemaster, this is the most common scenario for the majority of EV motorists. For a more comprehensive look at electric car running costs, we’d recommend looking at how much you’d use your EV and calculating how much you’d need to charge up at home versus on the open road. The likelihood is that an electric car will save you hundreds, or maybe even thousands, of pounds a year.

Whether you go for the Renault Zoe (above) with running costs of 6.1p per mile, or the Nissan Leaf (opposite page, top right) with running costs of 4p per mile, the likelihood is that an electric car could save you thousands of pounds a year. To advertise text ADVERT to: 07446 778 482

This month’s garden tasks In the flower garden

In the greenhouse

Prune your Wisteria plant now, cutting back summer side-shoots to 2 or 3 buds. Prune rose bushes now whilst they are dormant. Cut back to just above a bud and remove any crossing or dead branches. You can plant bare root roses now in a sunny position for spectacular summer colour. Cut back the old foliage from ornamental grasses before growth begins - clip them to within a few centimetres of the ground. Cut back damaged, diseased and the oldest stems of brightly coloured willows, and thin overcrowded stems. Remove any faded flowers from your winter pansies to stop them setting seed.

Plant Amaryllis bulbs in pots now for stunning indoor flowers in early spring. Brush heavy snow off of greenhouses and cold frames to prevent the glass being damaged. Keep your potato planters inside as frosts will kill the foliage. For better seed germination, try using electric propagators to help your early seedlings along.

In the vegetable garden Harvest parsnips and leeks. If you’d like to grow early peas, place a cloche over the soil to let it warm up for a few weeks prior to sowing. While you’re waiting for the weather to warm up, try growing your own mushrooms using a mushroom kit indoors. You can start growing potatoes in containers under cover for a very early crop (Charlotte potatoes are a good variety for this). Potato Patio Planters are ideal for growing early potatoes in

small spaces. If your greenhouse is unheated, protect your potato grow bags with horticultural fleece on cold nights.

In the fruit garden Begin pruning your apple trees and pear trees if you haven’t done so already - this is best done whilst they are dormant. Continue to plant raspberry canes on sunny sites with free-draining soil. Leave plums, cherries and apricots unpruned until the summer as pruning these fruit trees now will make them susceptible to silver leaf infections. Prune blackcurrant bushes, gooseberries and redcurrants to maintain a productive framework. Try forcing rhubarb plants by placing an upturned bucket or bin over the crown. This will force tender pink stems to grow that will be ready in about 8 weeks time.

Other garden jobs Brush heavy snow of off hedges and conifers to prevent the branches from snapping out under its weight. Shred your Christmas tree and add it to compost bins. Alternatively the stripped down branches make great pea sticks. Hang fat balls and keep bird feeders topped up to attract birds, who will in turn eat pests in your garden. Get rid of slimy patches on the patio, and paving by scrubbing with a broom or blasting with a pressure washer. Wash empty pots by scrubbing them with hot water and a mild detergent. Rinse them well afterwards. Consider purchasing water butts now ready for the summer. Rainwater is particularly useful for watering acidloving, ericaceous plants (tap water is often slightly alkaline). Continue planting trees and shrubs while they are still dormant.
