chicken, then tip in the tomatoes, chilli, garlic and bouillon. Pour over 450ml water, cover and simmer for 30 mins or until the chicken is tender. 2 Meanwhile, tip the rice into a mediumsized pan with the onion, garlic, thyme and bouillon. Pour in 600ml water, cover and cook for 25 mins or until the liquid has been absorbed and the rice is tender. Check toward the end of the cooking time to ensure it isn’t starting to catch on the pan. Stir in the beans and heat through. If you’re following a diet plan, serve half the rice with half the chicken (saving the leftovers for a second meal later in the week). Otherwise you can serve four portions, scattered with a few extra thyme leaves, if you like.

Recipe tip

If you have any left over, chill the remaining chicken and rice straight away and store in the fridge. When serving it later in the week, heat through thoroughly in the microwave or in a pan until piping hot. You will need to add a dash of water to the rice to prevent it from sticking to the pan as it reheats.

THE CELTIC ARMS the manager who shown us to our table, we were asked what we would like to drink which was a hard decision given the impressive wine menu you would find it hard not to find the perfect beverage to pair with your meal from a traditional welsh cask ale to a generic brand lager.

T

his month took us to the beautiful Celtic Arms which is set in the stunning picturesque surrounding of Northop Country park, set amongst immaculate manicured gardens The Celtic Arms is impressive even more so lit up at night with the elegant twinkling fairy lights and the spotlights emphasising how Grande and beautiful the building is.

the interior has a stately feel to it with lots of different rooms/dining areas decorated extravagantly with beautiful chandeliers and quirky pictures and ornaments.

You won’t be disappointed on entering the Celtic Arms

We were given a warm welcome on arrival by Jose

14

We absolutely love the Celtic Arms not only in the Winter when the log burners are blazing and it’s all cosy in one of the many nooks but also in the summer on the large decked area overlooking the scenic views of the beautiful surrounding of the country park.

Once we had decided on our beverages it was time to pursue the menu which is always a real treat as the Celtic arms prides itself in sourcing the freshest tastiest local produce and using this and the creative genius of the chefs to ensure all the dishes not only taste amazing but look outstanding too. For starters we went traditional but with a seasonal twist so Reg opted for Port & Chicken liver Pate whilst I went for the Prawn and Crayfish cocktail. Both dishes were presented superbly and we could not wait to tuck in. The Pate was Port & Chicken Liver served with toasted Foccaccia, celery stalks and an apple

green beans and a creamy white wine sauce. There is nothing more wonderful than perfectly seared, tender and cranberry chutney, the rich pate had a subtle but warming taste of Port to it and married well with the sweet zing of the apple and cranberry sauce. The Prawn and Cray fish cocktail was extremely tasty with crisp iceberg lettuce ,celeriac and chunks of apples smothered in delicious creamy Marie Rose sauce and then served with a hearty buttered bloomer. The service was first class the moment our starters were finished they were

cleared away and the table was set up for our main course, we weren’t kept waiting long before our main course arrived which I must say looked outstanding a master piece created by the chef we were both eager to tuck in but not keen on spoiling the culinary work of art on our plates. Reg had gone for a lighter option than his usual steak and chips so opted for Seabass fillet which was served with a chive and sun blush tomato mash, fine

fish fillets with crispy skin. The fish was flavoursome and served with the most delicious accompaniments especially impressive was the chive and sun blush tomato mash it was divine and worked amazingly with the creamy white wine sauce and the delicate flavours of the seabass.

I opted for the beautifully roasted seared Duck fillet which was served pink and tasted as good as a piece of fillet steak it was accompanied with a delicate sweet orange and Cointreau reduction and then on the side was a dollop of creamy mash and buttered dressed cabbage all I can say is wow it melted in your mouth and all the flavours worked

unbelievably well together 5 stars to the chef! We were adamant we had indulged far too much for a dessert but Jose tempted us with the menu and we could not possibly resist. Reg plumped for Caramelised Apple & Gingersnap Cheesecake with a lime Coulis and I had the Black forest roulade with boozy cherries & Chantilly cream. All I can say is we were in a food coma and dessert heaven they were both to die for and definitely the icing on the cake to a superb meal from the surroundings, the ambiance, the staff, service and of course the wonderful chef and 5-star food! Well done The Celtic Arms we now have their sister restaurant The Plough in near Congleton on our to do list!

HOUSE to Home f you’ve recently had an extension built, the arrival of winter and gloomy weather might expose its shortcomings. Perhaps it’s not the light, bright space you thought it would be. That’s where a little extra glazing can help. VELUX roof windows mean lighter, brighter extensions. Naturally. VELUX says, ‘It’s the outside. Now available inside’. And if you check out the ideas below, you’ll see exactly what that means.

I

1. Approach from all angles Including VELUX windows angled in different directions can introduce light where you need it the most. Maybe that’s over a kitchen countertop, so you can see exactly what you’re doing when you are wielding a knife to prep vegetables, or decorating that special birthday cake. And perhaps that’s also over a dining table, so Sunday lunches are even sunnier affairs. In a busy kitchen, VELUX windows can provide precious ventilation for when things get a little steamy or smoky. The white polyurethane roof windows are also maintenance-free due to their moisture-resistant casing, so they’re ideal for humid rooms like kitchens… or indeed, bathrooms.

Looking on the bright side

sloping roof windows can bring in twice as much daylight as vertical windows of the same size, making both your original space and your extension feel so much brighter by allowing daylight to reach deep into your home.

3

Four clever ways to shed light on your extension 2. Illuminate a working corner Did you know that we are more alert and therefore more productive when we sit next to a window? So whether you are trying to get the kids to knuckle down with homework or you’re the culprit and you need a dedicated spot for catching up with paperwork or working on that first novel, VELUX can help. Here, a roof window sheds extra light into a study corner. It’s an idea that would work equally well in a loft conversion. A grades, publishing deals and balanced books here we come!

2

4. Make a basement bright A skylight can totally transform a basement extension, where it might not be possible to accommodate floor-to-ceiling windows. A VELUX flat glass roof light enhances the connection to the garden and will make the space feel bigger. That’s all important, particularly where you may have sacrificed a significant part of the garden to gain that extra living space. The view, like the sky, will change as the day goes on. You will feel immersed in sunsets and can enjoy the tranquility of a rain shower drumming lightly above without getting wet. You don’t even need to worry about appearance of your VELUX roof windows after inclement weather as the glass has a special coating to ensure it will clean up easily and smear-free.

1

4 3. Light up the dark Can you see there at the back? Open-plan living has many benefits, but it you aren’t opening up a house through from front to back, you might be concerned that the space furthest from your extension’s windows will seem dark and uninviting. It’s a valid concern, but one that’s easily resolved with a pitched roof fitted with VELUX roof windows that are angled towards the gloomiest parts of the room. In fact, a study has shown that VELUX’s

YOUR STARS FOR 2020 Aries (March 21 - April 19) For Arians, 2020 is a balancing act of a year, astrologically speaking, as you will often find yourself caught up in dilemmas between career and personal life. The previous period has made you wiser and more mature, so those decisions should come more naturally, although not without some effort. The focus in 2020 will be more on your professional life, as the love gods prepare to shake up your world towards the last part of the year. If you manage to keep your impulsivity in check and plan ahead cautiously, you will be rewarded!

Taurus (April 20 - May 20) Taurus’ yearly prediction seems to continue the patterns established in the previous few years. You are in a phase of building the foundations in matters that are important to you and the stars are giving you a little bit more time to do just that. As you’ve changed, your needs and wants might have changed too and now is the time to finds ways to fulfill them. Your home and family situation –or even your marriage- will be a key focus in 2020. Expect the new arrangements to consolidate around the summer and autumn.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20) Gemini, your astrology forecast for 2020 is one of the most interesting and rich among the signs, particularly when it comes to love and relationships. Love planet Venus will be spending one third of the year in your sign –this doesn’t happen often! Get ready to welcome her gifts, because love will be fun, spontaneous and exciting this year! Career and money will be on your mind, but it is all under control! 2020 will keep you on your toes either way and this matches your personality so well, that you will probably enjoy it a lot!

Cancer (June 21 - July 22) 2020’s yearly horoscope for Cancerians predicts one of the best years of your life, believe it or not! There are so many planets in the sector of your chart that rules relationships, that it will be impossible for you not to get numerous opportunities for a caring, lasting romantic bond! A little extra care around the Eclipses and Full Moons –as usual- will go a long way to secure your intuition is at the top of its game. That is what will guide you to make the right decisions and reap all the fruit towards the end of the year

Leo (July 23 - August 22) Your yearly horoscope shows important relationships in your life coming to a head, dear Leo. It’s not that you haven’t noticed, but whatever has started in the last 6 years is slowly coming full circle now. Throughout the year you are ambitious, confident and in touch with yourself. That can’t go unnoticed but it will also bring upon you important changes. Whatever doesn’t fit into your new life will make room for something new, something better. Embrace change and don’t resist it - 2020 marks the beginning of a new life stage!

Virgo (August 23 - September 22) Are you ready to shake things up in 2020? Virgo’s yearly horoscope sure says so! This year you will see a new version of yourself take charge. Well thought out and meticulously carried out plans are not a thing for 2020, so you might feel like you don’t belong, like you don’t know what to do. As long as you accept the things you cannot control and loosen up a bit, there’s a lot to gain this year, both in relationships as well as in financial matters. There’s a lot to gain this year, both in relationships as well as in financial matters. A little planning never hurt anyone, but try not to overdo it this year.

What do your stars have in store for you in the coming year? Libra (September 23 - October 22) Your 2020 yearly horoscope predicts harmony, balance and easy-going relationships dear Libra. What better news could you expect, right? You love the calm, the balanced and the beautiful and this year you are about to enjoy all of that. Relationship challenges are unlikely, but you do tend to stir up some drama from time to time, just to keep things interesting. Resist that temptation, focus on what is going well in your life and you shall stay away from turmoil. You’ll definitely remember 2020 with a smile a few years down the road!

Scorpio (October 23 - November 21) 2020 is going to be a rather intense year for Scorpio as your horoscope predicts. Passions run high throughout the year and wherever there is passion, you cannot go missing! You will need all the discipline you have to avoid temptations and the urge to rebel against what you feel confines you. You are going to have plenty of opportunities to express your sensuality and the fire within, even if you restrict your impulsivity every now and then. Adventurous journeys and exotic places are also in the cards for this year!

Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21) Get ready to welcome 2020 with a smile! Yours is one of the signs that had a pretty rough last couple of years. The tables kept turning and the luck that is usually on your side seemed to abandon you at the most crucial times. Your ruling planet Jupiter moves onwards to Capricorn, so the intensity will subside a bit. Leaving behind only that which has strong roots and has proven to you time and again it’s worth keeping in your life. 2020 is a year of cutting losses and consolidating gains.

Capricorn (December 22 - January 19) You are the protagonist of 2020 – and per your horoscope, you have been the protagonist for a couple of years now. There’s so much planetary activity in your sign, that the coming of lucky Jupiter will only magnify everything anew! Everything gets bigger: love, romance, career opportunities, money. Jupiter is an immature Joker at times, but tthis year he will behave much better. Use your resources wisely, because you might exhaust yourself on the way, particularly around the Eclipses. But fear not, it is all working in your favour!

Aquarius (January 20 - February 18) 2020 astrology for Aquarius points to a very creative and productive year. You are at the top of your game mentally and you can do whatever you put your mind to. You are a bit prone to leaving things unfinished, but this will not be the case this year. Yes, commitment can be scary, but now is the time to take the plunge and dive in head first, to whatever project (or relationship) you have your mind set on. The people around you will welcome your conviction to make things work, as long as you communicate openly and clearly.

Pisces (February 19 - March 20) The astrology for 2020 predicts many changes around your home and personal life, dear Pisces. You are not one to fear change - usually - and you don’t settle for the mundane. Well now is the time to try new things, talk to strangers, apply for your dream job, think BIG! As exciting as all that sounds, please do us a favour: don’t wear your heart on your sleeve. Tempting as it may be, it is not the best thing to do this year, because your ruler Neptune is still playing tricks. Keep a cool head and enjoy the ride!

HEALTH ather than embarking on yet another tedious diet plan, check out these eight simple ways to lose weight without cutting out your favourite treats.

Recent research has found that those who chewed each mouthful 40 times ate nearly 12 per cent fewer calories than those who chewed just 15 times, proving that taking your time over each mouthful could have huge benefits for your waistline.

Many people think that healthy food is low fat food (and vice versa) - however you needn’t cut out all fats in order to lose weight. In fact, monounsaturated fats - found in avocados, olive oil and nuts - can actually help weight loss. While it's still important to monitor your consumption of fat, studies have shown that eating a diet rich in monounsaturated - and low saturated fats can help promote weight loss.

4. Eat more frequently

R

1. Get more sleep Sleep - and the lack of it - can affect your willpower and motivation to exercise or generally eat sensibly. Sleep will also affect your stress levels and, if overly stressed, your body increases its levels of cortisol, an appetite stimulant. If you don't receive the necessary rest to reduce this stress, you can find yourself consuming extra food. Studies have found that those who get enough sleep eat almost 300 fewer calories than those who are sleep-deprived.

2. Eat breakfast Although you may be tempted to skip breakfast to cut calories or save time, eating a filling breakfast can help curb your hunger, preventing snacking throughout the day or overeating at lunchtime. This is because the metabolism is believed to be more efficient in the morning - eating breakfast can kickstart your metabolism and continue burning through the day. Breakfasts also stop your body entering a state of starvation and will prevent your body storing any food you eat later in the day.

3. Eat slowly It generally takes a minimum of 20 minutes to start feeling full, so slowing down the speed in which you eat will mean that you start feeling full after less. Simple tricks can help you slow how fast you're eating; chewing more thoroughly for example, not only takes up time between bites, but also helps your digestive system by breaking down more food before entering the stomach.

44

While increasing the number of meals you eat may sound counter-productive, eating five small meals (rather than three larger ones) can actually help you lose weight. This is largely because eating more frequently throughout the day will not only keep the hunger at bay, but help maintain good energy levels and keep your metabolism burning. All of these factors will encourage you to keep from overindulging or reaching for those easy-energy, high-sugar foods that satisfy your cravings and energy levels.

5. Start exercising By adding in some exercise, you can see the benefits of losing weight without having to cut your diet.

How to lose weight without dieting

Although a combination of healthy eating and working out is ideal for weight loss, if dieting is unfeasible for you, exercise is the perfect way to lose weight, enhance fitness and improve your overall health. Not only will regular exercise help to burn off the calories you consume, it will also help tone up and improve the shape of your body.

6. Eat more 'good' fats Many people think that healthy food is low fat food (and vice versa), however you needn’t cut out all fats in order to lose weight. In fact, monounsaturated fats – found in avocados, olive oil and nuts –can actually help weight loss. While it is still important to monitor your consumption of fat (as when trying to lose weight your aim is to burn through some of your fat stores) studies have shown that eating a diet rich in monounsaturated - and low saturated - fats can help promote weight loss, particularly in the abdominal area.

7. Don't shop hungry Shopping whilst hungry is a common error made by everyone which may not seem like a major factor, but when hungry, the brain desires foods that release energy immediately, typically high sugar or high glycemic index foods. These are typically foods which we categorise as unhealthy, which subsequently impact your weight loss. It is therefore important to eat something filling before doing the grocery shop, as not only will you choose healthier options but also purchase less food.

8. Avoid late-night snacks Consuming unhealthy calorie-rich food before bed can halt weight loss, as unused calories are subsequently stored as fat. Studies have shown that a third of women consume nearly half their calories during or after dinner, resulting in a substantial amount of unused calories. The average person should aim to consume around 200 calories - guilt free - after dinner, but eating large amounts of food before bed will not only add to your the amount of fat stored, but can also slow the digestive system, encouraging weight gain.

MOTORING Renault Captur 2020 T

he Renault Captur was introduced in 2013, thrust before a UK just getting used to the idea of small hatchbacks made to look like SUVs. This previous model was surprisingly multi-talented and better looking than the average offering, helping it sell extremely well and giving this all-new model for 2019 a lot to live up to. Particularly because today the UK isn’t just ready for small SUVs; it’s going crazy for them. The competition is now stronger than ever for the Captur, which has fresh challenges from cars like the Volkswagen T-Cross, Skoda Kamiq and Seat Arona.

optionally on S Edition trim, are also less visually impressive and configurable than in other small SUVs too. All-told, both the Kamiq and T-Cross are stronger here.

That means the Captur’s boot, at 536 litres with the seats pushed forward is the largest of any small SUV, and at 422-litres with them all the way back is seriously competitive.

Still, the quality of materials inside are high and the Captur’s space is great. Adults in the front will have no complaints and the driver enjoys decent visibility and an easily-adjustable driving position. In the back the Captur is similarly impressive, managing to seat a couple more adults in comfort, even if three across the back will prove tight.

There’s plenty of choice when it comes to the Captur’s engines and gearboxes, with three petrols, two diesels and a plug-in petrol-electric hybrid due to arrive soon. An automatic ‘box with seven speeds, or five and six-speed manuals are available, depending on the engine.

But the Captur has a party trick - its rear bench can slide forwards and backwards, trading rear legroom for boot space.

The usual advice applies here: if you drive mainly in town, pick a petrol Renault’s 128bhp 1.3-litre we drove

To fend off this little lot, Renault’s contender has been completely overhauled. Outside, it has new C-shaped LED running lights, LED headlights as standard, a wider grille, re-designed bumpers and larger alloy wheel options. It’s still a Captur, but it’s all grown up. Inside the Captur has moved also on, getting a new infotainment system, slicker design and upgraded materials. And, because the Captur is taller, wider and longer than before mainly between its front and rear axles - there’s more space for people inside, particularly in the back. Entry and mid-level Capturs get a 7in portrait infotainment system without built-in sat-nav but featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as DAB radio and Bluetooth. Mid-level Iconic then adds built-in sat-nav to this same system. Then, range-topping S Edition models get a larger 9.3-inch system with sat-nav. All-in-all, the new screens are highres, but in all three cases the native menus and response times don’t live up to the better systems in alternatives. Renault’s digital dials, available

strikes a good balance between price, performance and fuel economy. If you spend more time on the motorway, then the 113bhp diesel will make more financial sense. Company car driver or have reliable access to charging? Don’t write off the hybrid, as it will prove to be extremely efficient in the right circumstances. In any of its guises the Captur is no thriller to drive, but few (if any) small SUVs are. More importantly it steers precisely and feels grippy and stable through turns. Where it doesn’t live up to cars like the VW T-Cross is on comfort and noise, proving a little bumpy in town and less hushed on the motorway than the VW. Which leaves the Renault Captur in a favourable position among the huge, and growing, number of small SUVs available these days. It’s not quite the most rounded of them all, but more importantly with this type of car, if you love the way it looks, the Captur is well worth your cash.

FITNESS f you've decided it is time to start walking for health, fitness, and weight loss, you've already taken a great first step. Walking is an effective, natural way to achieve the daily physical activity amount recommended for weight management and good health.

I

Walking helps you burn calories and fat, which is necessary for weight loss. The recommendation is 60 minutes a day a few times a week. Generally, for a 160-pound person, walking will burn about 100 calories per mile. Best of all, it's cheap - no expensive gym membership needed - and it can be done anywhere. Combined with a balanced diet, you can start achieving your goals. If you're just getting started, take some time to familiarise yourself with the basics. Once you get going you can work your way up to walking comfortably for 30 minutes to an hour, the level of physical activity recommended to reduce risks of heart disease, type II diabetes, breast cancer, colon cancer... and more.

Is walking better than running? It may feel like walking is too low-impact to have a meaningful effect on your weight, but that's not true. Especially if you're just starting out, running may be too much too fast and is also not the best weight loss exercise for everyone. Ultimately, it comes down to your situation and needs. A walking programme is effective exercise and can lead to weight loss with proper calorie balance, so you shouldn't feel like you're not doing enough. It may be easier to stick to a walking plan instead of a running plan.

Before you get started There are a few things to consider when starting a walking programme: Preparing to walk: Learn what you need to do before you begin a walking program. This may include getting medical advice, investing in basic walking gear like shoes and clothing, and more. Walking Technique: Next, you will learn good walking technique, focusing on proper posture, use of arms, and leg motion.

50

Walking Schedule: Determine how often to walk, how fast, different types of walking, and how far to build up to the level of 30-60 minutes per day.

How to walk your way to fitness

Staying Motivated: Explore techniques for keeping yourself walking and avoiding common mistakes. All of the advice included is good for walking either indoors or outdoors. To begin with, check if your body has any special needs before starting an exercise programme.

Do you need a medical check-up? Contact your medical provider for a checkup or consultation before you begin your walking schedule if any of these apply to you: You have been sedentary for a year or more l You don't currently exercise and are over age 65 l You have been diagnosed with heart trouble l High blood pressure l Diabetes l Pregnant l You have chest pain, especially when exerting yourself. l You often feel faint or have severe dizzy spells l

Incorporating other exercise Once you're more advanced you can incorporate jogging or interval training to add some strength training and variety. But should you focus on strength training along with your walking for weight loss routine? Strength training can help you burn more calories and there are benefits for your metabolism, muscles, and more. As you get more comfortable with your walking routine, consider adding a day of weightlifting to reap the benefits.

Set realistic targets The important thing to remember is to be realistic. Don't be harsh on yourself if you can't go long distances right away you'll work up to them. Especially if you're new to exercise, focus on starting slow and consistency. You'll notice your body getting stronger as time goes. Set specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely goals that will help you structure your walking and give you something to work towards. Also, modify as you go based on how you feel and what results you're seeing. If your plan isn't working, regroup and evaluate.

GARDENS ere are some great ideas which will make your garden look extra special this winter.

H

A well-placed container close to a doorway, window or path really makes an impact, especially once winter begins to pare the garden back to basics. But you must use a robust, frost-hardy container.

Shopping for plants Ignore any specimens with battered leaves or shabby branches and gather together the best you can find in one trolley - choosing more foliage plants than flowering plants as sumptuous leaves are much more important in winter than flowers. When you’ve assessed what’s available, decide on your foliage theme. Golden plants light up shade and go very well with blues. Rich greens vibrate in winter light and they look best with reds and cool whites.

Give your garden some winter colour From top: Sibirica, Myrtifolia and Aurea.

l ‘Crotonifolia’ - high-gloss plant with large green leaves liberally speckled with bright gold. l ‘Emerald Gem’ - invaluable, tight bun-shaped mound of tiny bright green leaves. l ‘Ferox Argentia’ (Hedgehog holly) compact, slow-growing male holly with prickles all over the leaf. l ‘Myrtifolia’ - a dense, neat male holly with purple shoots and small elliptical, dark-green leaves edged in spines. l ‘Green Pillar’ - an upright slender female with dark-green leaves and red berries. l ‘Gulftide’ - a slow-growing, holly look alike with twisted leaves dark-green leaves and fragrant white flowers. l ‘Goshiki’ - holly like leaves mottled in green and yellow.

Stems and skeletons l ‘Kesselringii’ - dogwood with

purple-black stems. l ‘Sibirica’ (syn ‘Westonbirt’) the brightest red dogwood. l ‘Winter Beauty’ - twiggy orange and red stems. l ‘Flaviramea’ - straight, substantial, olive-green stems. l ‘Contorta’ - corkscrew stems and catkins.

Leafy perennials l ‘Bressingham Ruby’ - large,

Always buy more plants than you think you’ll need. Any leftovers can be added to the borders.

glossy leaves. l ‘Wester Flisk Group’ - green flowers and finely divided, matt foliage touched with red. l ‘Atropurpurea’ (lesser periwinkle) - trailing plant with plumpurple flowers.

Before you plant Position the pot before you plant as once the soil and plants are added the weight may be too great to move it afterwards. If the drainage hole is small stand the pot on three pot feet to aid drainage.

Arranging plants Start off by placing your key plant on the ground and arrange your chosen plants around it roughly in the shape of the container. Look at each plant individually and make sure that the plant is showing its best side (most plants have a ‘back’ and a ‘front’). Fill the container about two thirds full. Remove the key plant from its pot by pressing firmly on the pot base and gently upending it. Check the root ball: if the roots are potbound, gently tease them out and straighten them.

58

Position the key plant in the soil in a central position. Arrange the other plants quickly -to avoid damaging foliage and then carefully back fill with compost and then water.

Suitable plants for winter containers Evergreen shrubs l ‘Kew Green’ - large, conical heads of pale green buds. l ‘Rubella’ - clusters of wine-red buds.

Grass-like foliage l ‘Ogon’ - erect fountain of green and gold. l ‘Variegata’ - solid olive-green leaves margined in cream. l ‘Aurea’ - soft, butter-yellow rosette of strappy leaves. l ‘Nigrescens’ - low-growing black strappy leaves - excellent with red flowers.

TECH TALK D printing or additive manufacturing is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file. The creation of a 3D printed object is achieved using ‘additive’ processes. In an additive process an object is created by laying down successive layers of material until the object is created. Each of these layers can be seen as a thinly sliced horizontal cross-section of the eventual object.

3

3D printing is the opposite of normal ‘subtractive’ manufacturing which is cutting out/hollowing out a piece of metal or plastic with for instance a milling machine. It enables you to produce complex shapes using less material (and producing less waste) than traditional manufacturing methods.

How does 3D printing work?

3D printing industry Adoption of 3D printing has reached critical mass as those who have yet to integrate additive manufacturing somewhere in their supply chain are now part of an ever-shrinking minority. Where 3D printing was only suitable for prototyping and one-off manufacturing it is now rapidly transforming into a production technology. Most of the current demand for 3D printing is industrial in nature. Recent research forecasts the global 3D printing market to reach £35 billion by 2026.

A few examples: l Dental products l Eyewear l Architectural scale models l Prosthetics l Movie props l Design (lamps, furniture etc) l Reconstructing fossils in paleontology l Replicating ancient artefacts in archaeology l Reconstructing bones and body parts in forensic pathology l Reconstructing damaged evidence retrieved from a crime scene

As it evolves, 3D printing technology is destined to transform almost every major industry and change the way we live, work, and play in the future.

3D printing explained

It all starts with a 3D model. You create one yourself or download it from an appropriate website. When creating it yourself you can choose to use a 3D scanner, app, code or 3D modelling software.

3D modelling software

Learn how to 3D print

There are many different 3D modelling software tools available. Industrial grade software can easily cost thousands of pounds, but free open source software is also available.Much of this software works in your browser, so you don’t have to install it on your computer. Beginner lessons are anailable for those who want to try it themselves.

The self-taught way

Getting started with 3D printing means asking yourself what you would like to learn first. Are you interested in the hardware, or do you want to focus on the end result - creating objects? Answering this question could lead you to the decision if you should buy a 3D printer or outsource the actual printing to a 3D print service.

Which 3D printer is right for you?

Slicing: 3D model to 3D printer ‘Slicing’ is the process which divides a 3D model into hundreds or thousands of horizontal layers and is done with slicing software. When a file is sliced, it’s ready to be fed to a 3D printer. This can be done via USB, SD or internet. The sliced 3D model is now ready to be 3D printed layer by layer.

Examples of 3D printing 3D printing encompasses many forms of technologies and materials and is being used in almost all industries you can think of.

Take your time to investigate which 3D printer is right for you. For instance, the range of printable materials can differ quite a bit between a resin-based printer or a filament-based machine. Or maybe you don’t want to spend too much time on tinkering and just want to focus on making stuff!

IN THIS MONTH 1971: Ibrox stadium disaster

1934

On Saturday, January 2, 1971, 66 people were killed in a crush as supporters tried to leave Glasgow Rangers’ Ibrox Stadium. In the last minute of an Old Fim fixture, Glasgow rivals Celtic took a 1–0 lead; however, in the final moments, Rangers equalised.

On January 5, 1934, motorcyclist Arthur Grant claimed to have nearly hit a creature while approaching Abriachan (near the north-eastern end of the loch) at about 1am on a moonlit night. According to Grant, it had a small head attached to a long neck; the creature saw him, and crossed the road back to the loch. Grant, a veterinary student, described it as a cross between a seal and a plesiosaur. It was suggested that this was a faulty observation due to the poor light conditions.

At the same time, as thousands of spectators were leaving the ground by stairway 13, it appears someone fell, causing a massive chain-reaction pile-up of people. It was the worst British football disaster until Hillsborough in 1989. Glasgow Rangers FC were later ruled to be at fault in a sheriff’s judgement on one of the deaths. They not dispute this ruling, and were sued for damages in 60 other cases brought by relatives of the dead.

1973: UK joins the EEC The United Kingdom’s membership of the EEC came into effect on January 1, 1973. Previous applications to join in 1963 and 1967 were vetoed by the President of France, Charles de Gaulle, who said that “a number of aspects of Britain’s economy, from working practices to agriculture” had “made Britain incompatible with Europe”.

The scientific community regards the Loch Ness Monster as a phenomenon without biological basis, explaining sightings as hoaxes, wishful thinking and the misidentification of mundane objects.

1954 1985

By the time Prime Minister Edward Heath signed the Treaty of Accession in January 1972, exports from Britain to western Europe were outstripping those to Commonwealth countries and the Confederation of British Industry were advocating the importance of panEuropean investment, collaboration and coordinated industrial policy.

1954: Marilyn Monroe marries Joe DiMaggio On January 14, 1954, mobbed by reporters and fans, movie legend Marilyn Monroe married New York Yankees baseball hero Joe DiMaggio. The ultimate All-American romance lasted only 274 days. Tension started to build, particularly around DiMaggio’s discomfort with his wife’s sexy screen image. By October they were divorced, with Monroe accusing her husband of “mental cruelty”.

68

1934: Loch Ness Monster spotted?

1994: Tonya Harding v Nancy Kerrigan On January 6, 1994, the day before the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, Tonya Harding’s rival Nancy Kerrigan was attacked in a corridor after a practice session at the Detroit Cobo Arena. She was struck on the knee with a baton by Shane Stant, hired by Harding’s ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly. The attack on Kerrigan received a substantial amount of publicity and news media crews camped outside her home. Harding accepted a plea bargain in which she pleaded guilty to conspiracy to hinder prosecution and was stripped of her 1994 U.S. Championship title and banned for life as either skater or coach.

1994

1985: The Sinclair C5 goes on sale The brainchild of Sir Clive Sinclair, the C5 was essentially a small one-person battery electric velomobile, technically an “electrically assisted pedal cycle”. Unveiled at a glitzy launch on January 10, it received a less than enthusiastic reception from the British media. The vehicle’s limitations – a short range, a maximum speed of only 15 mph, a battery that ran down quickly and a lack of weatherproofing – made it impractical for most people’s needs.
