Balti Chicken with Recipe Spinach & Tomatoes Method

1 Put the chicken in a bowl and add the lime juice, curry powder and a twist of pepper. Cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for at least 20 minutes.

2 Spray a large wok or frying pan with low-calorie cooking spray and place over a medium-high heat. Add the cinnamon stick, cardamom pods, chilli and cumin seeds, and stir-fry briefly just

to colour and release their fragrance. Add the onion, garlic and ginger and fry for 3-4 minutes, until the onion starts to colour lightly. Add the chicken and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes, or until sealed.

3 Mix together the ground coriander, turmeric, cumin and garam masala; add to the pan. Stir, lower the heat to medium and cook for 1-2 minutes. 4 Pour in the passata and 150ml water,

then stir in the pepper. When starting to bubble, lower the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes. Add the cherry tomatoes and simmer for 2-3 minutes. Add the spinach and coriander, turning once just to wilt. Season to taste and add a splash more water if required.

5 Remove the cinnamon stick, cardamom pods and chilli. Serve with rice.

How to keep your house warm in winter That happened fast, didn’t it? One minute it’s a balmy 20 degrees C and the next it’s below zero – and your thermostats is suddenly seeing some action! However, staying warm can be expensive, which is why we felt the need to come up with some tips for insulating your home against the cold properly this winter. They’ll keep your family cosy until spring, without breaking the bank! Whether you’re after small steps to make your home that little bit toastier or are looking at completely refurbishing it to make it as energy efficient as possible, there are plenty of things you can do to prevent unwanted draughts.

Install a chimney balloon It’s no good spending thousands on triple glazing and loft insulation if you then let cold air in through the chimney. The University of Liverpool calculated households lose around 4 per cent of total heat up the chimney, so a highquality block that prevents draughts could save you over £200 a year. If you don’t use the chimney at all, you could consider having it capped by a professional.

For gaps between the bottom of the door and the floor, you can buy a special ‘brush’ or hinged-flap draught excluder.

Seal the windows Here’s another tip from Claire at uSwitch. ‘Draught-proofing strips work

If you don’t already have a second flap or ‘brushes’ in your letterbox, you could fit either of these, which will help keep the warmth in.

Seal the skirting boards ‘It may seem like a small change, but using sealant to fill the gaps between the top and bottom of your skirting boards can really make a difference,’ says Claire Osborne, energy expert at uSwitch.

Fit underlay The carpet and underlay for flooring that you choose can also make a big difference on your home’s insulation. According to the experts at Carpetright, getting the right underlay for flooring can save you as much as 15 per cent off your energy bills.

What does it cost to Motoring run an electric car? T

here are several benefits to owning an electric car; along with environmental brownie points, electric vehicles (EVs) get tax grants, and are also exempt from certain congestion charges. However, one of the most obvious – but often unquantified – benefits of owning an EV are the low running costs. We’ll say it now: an electric vehicle will cost potentially far less than a diesel or petrol equivalent given the same use. But how much cheaper are they? Keep reading to find out.

How to calculate running costs for an electric vehicle (EV) Every electric car comes with a different-sized battery. The capacity

of a battery is usually expressed in kilowatt hours (kWh), a measure of the energy storage available. So to calculate how much it costs to charge your car, simply look at the cost of electricity (either your home supply or at a public charging point) and do the maths. tariff, and the maths works out at a more palatable 100 x 12p = £12. That’s a major saving over the cost of a £70£100 petrol/diesel tankful for a typical executive car.

How much does it cost to charge an electric car? Just like conventionally-powered vehicles, electric cars come in different shapes and sizes, and will therefore have varying costs per mile. For this article, we’ve studied the running costs of a cheap and cheerful Renault Zoe, comparing it to the other vehicles so you can get a better idea of just how much it costs in the real world. Don’t forget you’ll need to add the initial cost of of a home-charging point to these prices, and that’ll set you back around £850 to £1250, including parts and labour. Grants are currently available from the government to subsidise the cost of installation.

We used a 66-mile round-trip journey to work and back as a benchmark, and studied the real-world costs of rival long-term fleet cars for comparison. Before we get into these figures, it’s important to note that these cars are driven by different people with different driving styles, and also that the Leaf’s figures were attained during the winter months; don’t forget that colder weather usually means less efficient batteries. How much cheaper are an EV’s monthly costs? Victory for the Zoe, then. And just to make the advantage clear, multiply those commuting costs by five for a typical working week, and then that by four to get an estimate of the monthly difference, and so forth. It’s advantage electric car all the way.

Electric car charging in the UK This is more real-world than a science lab test, and we’ve taken the figures of different drivers for different cars – but the trends are obvious. Don’t forget our running costs only take into account the daily commuting we’ve done; add in extra miles done at weekends and in the evenings, and you’d be saving even more money.

What about public charging of EVs? Home charging is generally cheaper than public charging. However, when you consider that 80% of electric car owners charge at home, according to BP Chargemaster, this is the most common scenario for the majority of EV motorists. For a more comprehensive look at electric car running costs, we’d recommend looking at how much you’d use your EV and calculating how much you’d need to charge up at home versus on the open road. The likelihood is that an electric car will save you hundreds, or maybe even thousands, of pounds a year.

On 15th January 1973 US President Nixon announced a ceasefire in Vietnam, bringing to a halt American bombing and ending US involvement in the war. The announcement followed peace talks between the US and the representatives from North and South Vietnam and agreement on the terms for peace - the eventual reunificiation of Vietnam and the release of all American prisoners of war within two months providing all American troops had been withdrawn. American involvement in the war had started nearly 20 years earlier – in February 1955. Over 5 million people are thought to have died during the conflict.

On New Year’s Day 2002, 12 European countries adopted the Euro as their only legal form of tender. The Euro is now the official currency of 15 countries and is used in a further 11 countries – as a result the total population using it as their single currency now stands at more than 320 million people. Two European Union Member States have opted out of using it – the United Kingdom and Denmark. According to the European Commission, the € symbol that was adopted to signify the Euro was inspired by the Greek Epsilon, a reference to the “cradle of European civilisation”. It is also the first letter of the word Europe, which they state was crossed with two parallel lines to represent stability.

The coronation of Queen Elizabeth I as queen regnant of England and Ireland took place at Westminster Abbey, London, on 15 January 1559. She had had ascended the throne at the age of 25 upon the death of her half-sister, Queen Mary I, on 17 November 1558. Mary had reversed the Protestant Reformation which had been started by her two predecessors, so this was the last British coronation to be conducted under the authority of the Roman Catholic Church. Historians view Elizabeth’s coronation as a statement of her intention restore England to Protestantism, but to allow the continuation of some Catholic customs, a compromise known as the Elizabethan Settlement.

On January 24th 1848, James Marshall found a few tiny gold nuggets whilst working on a saw mill building project on the American River near Sacramento in California. 1948: Gandhi assassinated ‘Mahatma’ Gandhi, the father of India, was assassinated on January 30th, 1948 – shot at point blank range by Hindu nationalist Nathuram Godse. Blaming Gandhi for sacrificing Hindu interests by agreeing to the partition of India, Godse had tried to assassinate Gandhi several times before approaching him when he was on his way to evening prayer and shooting him three times. Millions of Indians took to the streets to mourn Gandhi, plus anti-Brahmin riots soon broke out across the country, as Godse was Brahmin. Godse and his co-conspirator Narayan Apte were sentenced to death for the murder.

Prune your Wisteria plant now, cutting back summer side-shoots to 2 or 3 buds. Prune rose bushes now whilst they are dormant. Cut back to just above a bud and remove any crossing or dead branches. You can plant bare root roses now in a sunny position for spectacular summer colour. Cut back the old foliage from ornamental grasses before growth begins - clip them to within a few centimetres of the ground. Cut back damaged, diseased and the oldest stems of brightly coloured willows, and thin overcrowded stems. Remove any faded flowers from your winter pansies to stop them setting seed.

Plant Amaryllis bulbs in pots now for stunning indoor flowers in early spring. Brush heavy snow off of greenhouses and cold frames to prevent the glass being damaged. Keep your potato planters inside as frosts will kill the foliage. For better seed germination, try using electric propagators to help your early seedlings along.

In the vegetable garden Harvest parsnips and leeks. If you’d like to grow early peas, place a cloche over the soil to let it warm up for a few weeks prior to sowing. While you’re waiting for the weather to warm up, try growing your own mushrooms using a mushroom kit indoors. You can start growing potatoes in containers under cover for a very early crop (Charlotte potatoes are a good variety for this). Potato Patio Planters are ideal for growing early potatoes in

small spaces. If your greenhouse is unheated, protect your potato grow bags with horticultural fleece on cold nights.

In the fruit garden Begin pruning your apple trees and pear trees if you haven’t done so already - this is best done whilst they are dormant. Continue to plant raspberry canes on sunny sites with free-draining soil. Leave plums, cherries and apricots unpruned until the summer as pruning these fruit trees now will make them susceptible to silver leaf infections. Prune blackcurrant bushes, gooseberries and redcurrants to maintain a productive framework. Try forcing rhubarb plants by placing an upturned bucket or bin over the crown. This will force tender pink stems to grow that will be ready in about 8 weeks time.

Other garden jobs Brush heavy snow of off hedges and conifers to prevent the branches from snapping out under its weight. Shred your Christmas tree and add it to compost bins. Alternatively the stripped down branches make great pea sticks. Hang fat balls and keep bird feeders topped up to attract birds, who will in turn eat pests in your garden. Get rid of slimy patches on the patio, and paving by scrubbing with a broom or blasting with a pressure washer. Wash empty pots by scrubbing them with hot water and a mild detergent. Rinse them well afterwards. Consider purchasing water butts now ready for the summer.
