Use mirrors to boost your garden It’s easy to see why garden mirrors are gaining popularity... Garden mirrors are a great addition to any garden but they’re especially useful in small courtyard gardens on roof terraces and balconies. It’s important to think about where you place your mirror and what you want to achieve.

How to add value to your home

Our homes are an investment so, when it comes to property value, the question ‘how much is my house worth?’ is one of the most frequently asked. It’s then followed by an inevitable property valuation by a series of estate agents, which then results in most homeowners asking, ‘so how can I add value to to my home?’ If that sounds familiar, there are plenty of ways to increase the value of your home – from renovations, extensions and big decorating jobs, to smaller, more budget-conscious updates that will helps boost your homes selling power.

A loft conversion is the most cost-effective way to gain extra living space and you should be able to do it if your home was built before 1975 and/or the loft has a maximum headroom of 2.3m. Work on converting an attic costs from around £20,000 – although on average a dormer loft conversion with a double bedroom and en-suite bathroom is more likely to be in the region of £3545k – and takes about six to 12 weeks to complete. This configuration is the most popular option and, according to Nationwide Building Society, it could add an estimated 21% to the value of your home. Remember, take professional advice before you start to plan your loft conversion because it must meet building and fire regulations.

Before you make any big design decisions or start planning an all-out home renovation project, we would recommend speaking to a trusted local estate agent, who knows about house sale prices – and what sells – in your area to ensure that any amendments or additions that you make your home will, in fact, add value to the property. KAISER CHIEFS

at Wolverhampton Racecourse - after the racing on Saturday September 1st, 2018

Brit Award winners Kaiser Chiefs are back this Summer for an action packed day out performing at Wolverhampton Racecourse on Saturday September 1st, after the racing. Why not have a day at the races before dancing into the evening with the fabulous Kaiser Chiefs in concert for an action packed day out!

A gig not to be missed…

It’s now twelve years since ‘Oh My God’ kickstarted Kaiser Chiefs’ extraordinary run of hits that also includes ‘I Predict A Riot’, ‘Everyday I Love You Less And Less’, ‘Never Miss A Beat’ and the Number One single ‘Ruby’. Mercury nominated debut album ‘Employment’ propelled the band to three Brit Awards wins and its successor, ‘Yours Truly, Angry Mob’, went double-platinum in the UK alone. The departure of founding member Nick Hodgson should have signposted the end of the band on a creative and commercial level; in 2012 the release of a greatest hits album, ‘Souvenir’, seemed to seal the deal. “Most sane people would have given up,” laughs lead singer and songwriter Ricky Wilson, but in a chapter of the Kaiser Chiefs story that might as well be titled Escape From Indie Landfill, Ricky ensconced himself

on primetime telly as a coach on The Voice. Shortly afterwards the band’s fifth album ‘Education, Education, Education & War’ became their first Number One in seven years. The band’s latest full-length release, 2016’s ‘Stay Together’, is all about continuing the journey. “People tell you that you’re only allowed one shot,” Ricky says. “But bands who get a second shot are the ones who fight as hard for their next chance as they did for their first.” To be in with a chance of winning the tickets, answer the following question: “Who is the Kaiser Chiefs’ lead singer?” Send your answer to: reg@insideflintshiremagazine.co.uk with your full name, address and contact details.

Saturday September 1st, 2018; Wolverhampton Racecourse; Box Office No: 08442 491000; Tickets: from £39.00; Gates open: 4.00pm; Website: http://www.vmstickets.co.uk

The new Honda Civic: Will it make you think twice about ditching diesel?

L

aunched at the beginning of last year, the 10th generation Honda Civic is slowly establishing itself as a thoughtful alternative to the obvious family car contenders such as the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra. Rightly so, too, for it has a combination of attributes that are easy to admire, be it the spacious interior, well-sorted dynamics, sensible running costs or strong engines. To date those engines have been fuelled by petrol, but after a delayed start Honda’s latest diesel unit has also joined the Civic range. For despite the decline in demand for new diesels, Honda has concluded that the fuel still has a role to play for the time being. The engine in question is a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder carried over from the previous generation Civic but updated with new pistons and a NOx storage converter to reduce emissions, along with detail changes to eradicate some of the noise and vibration inherent with diesel power. Power and torque outputs are unchanged over the old Civic diesel, with 118bhp and 221lb ft, but further gains have been made in efficiency to the extent the Civic diesel now returns 80mpg on the EU Combined cycle and emits just 93g/km of CO2. At present the Civic diesel is only offered with a manual gearbox in the form of Honda’s reassuringly precise six-speed unit. Drive is sent to the front wheels, while the suspension consists of MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link set-up at the rear. The body is a five-door hatchback with a sloping roofline that just starts to eat into headroom for taller adults travelling in the back seats. Legroom is excellent though, and the boot is similar in size and shape to a Skoda Octavia’s, making the Civic a particularly useful family hatchback.

Equipment levels are generous across all models, with the SE coming with front and rear parking sensors, alloy wheels and climate control. On top of this the £1,800 more expensive SR adds, among other things, a reversing camera, power folding wing mirrors, a leather steering wheel, dual-zone climate control and the touchscreen. Upgrading again to a top-spec EX Civic rounds thinks off with luxuries such as heated leather seats, keyless entry, blindspot monitors and adaptive dampers, although with another price hike to the tune of £2,800 you’d need to really want said features to justify the extra outlay. As for the driving experience, perhaps the most telling thing about the Civic’s diesel engine is you don’t tend to notice it. Of course it’s a little noisier than the petrol equivalent, but by the standards of four-cylinder diesels the idle is relatively quiet and it only becomes unpleasantly coarse above 4,000rpm. Admittedly, it could never be described as quick, but nor is the 0-62mph time of 10.2 seconds painfully slow either. The only thing you need to watch out for is being caught at a low speed in a high gear, because although tractable enough to entertain such a scenario without stalling, the engine doesn’t produce anything in the way of meaningful torque until there’s at least 2,000rpm on the rev-counter. As for fuel economy, we achieved 56mpg over 350 miles of driving, which is a good 10mpg more than we’ve managed in any petrol Civic under similar

From the driver’s seat you get the same multi-textured dashboard layout as any other Civic, with the only obvious change being a digital rev counter capped at 6,000rpm rather than the 8,000rpm of the petrol models. The dial display itself initially looks busy but is actually very well ordered. All but the entry-level SE come with a 7-inch central touchscreen, although despite featuring the expected satnav and DAB radio it’s not the most satisfying of user experiences, being occasionally slow to respond and frequently unintuitive to control. At least it comes with Android Auto and Apple Carplay to give you easier access to your phone’s music and contacts.

test conditions, not to mention broadly competitive with what this car’s rivals will manage. In terms of comfort there’s noticeable road noise to contend with, but otherwise the Civic is a class act, with suspension that simultaneously smooths our battered road surfaces while maintaining a tight grip on the car’s body

movements. This generation of Civic has a lower centre of gravity than its predecessor and you really do notice it in how planted the car feels through corners. There’s also plenty of adjustment in the driving position, including the ability to drop so low it’s as if you’re in a sports car. That the steering is completely lacking in feel is no great surprise, but it is at least precise, quick and well weighted, adding to the sense that the Civic is a car that’s been set up with keen drivers in mind. Admittedly, the same can be said of the ride and handling of petrol Civics, which are also cheaper to buy (the 1.0-litre starts from £18,895 to the diesel’s £20,245), offer arguably sweeter performance and remain better suited to those who don’t frequently undertake long journeys. That’s all as expected though, for adding a diesel option to the Civic range was always about increasing choice rather than toppling the already available engines.

Holiday review

July

Best Italian beach holidays for 2018 San Fruttuoso, Liguria

If you’ve seen the Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon’s ‘The Trip’ to Italy, you may remember them sitting on the terrace of a restaurant-pensione overlooking an idyllic cove, with a beachside medieval abbey as a backdrop. This magical place is called San Fruttuoso, and it’s in Liguria, around halfway by boat between chi-chi Portofino and the family resort of Camogli. To get there, you either trek across the Portofino promontory, or get a ferry (timetables at golfoparadiso.it). Portofino has its fair share of hotels including Belmond Hotel Splendido, perhaps the most famous in the region, as well as Eight Hotel Portofino and Hotel Piccolo Portofino.

Tropea, Calabria

Calabria doesn’t feature anywhere like as prominently as Sicily or Puglia in Italian summer-sun brochures. The barely regulated sprawl that clutters up much of the coast is one reason. But there are honourable exceptions – like Tropea, a classy enclave that is the region’s answer to Positano or Taormina. The old town, full of good trattorias and shops, garlands a rocky outcrop above a gently shelving sandy beach. Stay at the Hotel Rocca della Sena for access to Tropea beach via a private stairway and a gorgeous terraced garden with whirlpool tubs overlooking the Aeolian Islands.

Viareggio, Tuscany

Viareggio is the Italian seaside holiday at its most classic: ordered rows of beach umbrellas, carefully groomed sand, Belle Epoque villas and dapper grand hotels that dream wistfully of their glory days. Combining history and style with a Tuscan passion for the good things of life, Viareggio is a little like Florence-by-Sea. Now run by Best Western,

the Grand Hotel Royal, the resort’s historic Art Deco luxe option is a landmark in the area with impressive turrets and an elegant design. It has a garden, outdoor swimming pool and easy access to the beach.

San Vito lo Capo, Sicily

A summer magnet for families and couples from Palermo and Trapani, this dramatically located resort is little known in the UK. And long may it stay that way: there are no Taormina-style tourist souks here, just a lively, low-rise garden town panning out along a two-mile sweep of sand dominated, at its northern end, by the vertiginous peak of Monte Monaco. Centuries of Arab influence have left their mark on the local cuisine: there’s even a Cous Cous Fest in September. Regular boat tours head around the promontory to the Zingaro nature reserve and the cute village of Scopello, whose ancient port and tonnara (tuna fishery) have featured in several films – among them Ocean’s Twelve.

Capo Testa, Sardinia

On the northern tip of Sardinia, Capo Testa is a bulbous promontory studded with an array of first-class swimming spots. The nearby resort of Santa Teresa Gallura has far more energy than the fabled, sanitised Smeralda and considerably less impact on the wallet. You could be content on Santa Teresa’s own beach of Rena Bianca, but the rocky setting of Capo Testa, 3km west, has more character, with its moon-like rock formations and goldtinted sand. Most of the beaches are family-friendly and great for snorkeling—be there early to avoid the crowds, or late for the colours and soft light. The best hotels are in Santa Teresa Gallura, including the Hotel La Funtana on the edge of town, with simple rooms, friendly staff and a pool.

Puglia

Some of the best beaches in mainland Italy are in Puglia (main picture) – particularly in a string of pristine sandy strands south of the historic towns of Avetrana and Manduria, the latter famous for its Primitivo wine. For white sand, translucent water and informal beach-shack lunches, head for the seaside villages of Punta Prosciutto (“Ham Point”) or Torre Colimena. The nearby town of Porto Cesareo has the best selection of hotels, but it’s also worth looking at agriturismi or country hotels just inland – like the very chic Masseria Potenti.

Vasto, Abruzzo

With its interminable white-sand beaches, Italy’s Adriatic coast merits exploration beyond the resorts of Rimini and Riccione. Well on the way towards the “heel” of the peninsula, Vasto is an elegant place, set high above a straggle of family-fun beach high-rises to the south, and a striking stretch of unspoilt coastline in the Punta Aderci nature reserve to the north, where trabocchi – ramshackle wooden fishing platforms – emerge like crazy sculptures from the sea. You’ll find exceptional hospitality at the Bagni Vittoria b&b where seven rooms and apartments are a stone’s throw – quite literally – from the Adriatic waves.

Ischia

The island of Ischia bubbles and steams with thermal activity, and the spa treatment centre at the magnificent Mezzatorre Resort harnesses this to the full. But the 57-room hotel, perched in a pinewood above its own private cove, also offers exclusive access to a splendid bit of Mediterranean. Located on a terrace along the gentle path down to the sea is a heated saltwater pool. The Mezzatorre’s little bay is rocky, perfect for setting off with a snorkel to explore the local marine life. But the town of Forio d’Ischia, immediately outside the hotel, is edged by long strips of white sand beach.

Recipe of the month

Cherry meringue pie

Ingredients

1.5kg fresh red cherries, stoned | 100g caster sugar | 3 tbsp kirsch | 6 tbsp ground arrowroot | Juice of half a lemon 5 large free-range egg yolks | 60g butter.

For the pastry

150g plain flour, plus extra for dusting | Pinch of salt | 30g caster sugar | 85g unsalted butter 1 large free-range egg yolk.

For the merigue

3 large free-range egg whites | 175g caster sugar.

Method

1. Make the pastry. Pulse the flour, salt, sugar and butter

in a blender, until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add the egg yolk and 1 tbsp cold water. Pulse until it comes together to form a dough. Wrap in cling film, then chill for at least 10 minutes. 2. Preheat the oven to 190°C/fan170°C/gas 5. Roll out the pastry on a floured surface to the thickness of a 50p coin and use to line a deep (3cm) 21cm fluted tart tin. Line with baking paper and fill with baking beans or rice. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes. Remove the beans/rice and paper and bake for a further 10-12 minutes until golden and crisp. Set aside to cool. Reduce the oven temperature to 180°C/fan160°C/gas 4. 3. Put the cherries, sugar and kirsch in a pan over a low heat. When the sugar has melted, increase the heat a little and cook for 5-10 minutes until the cherries start to break

down. Whizz in a food processor and press through a sieve, back into the pan. You should have approximately 650700ml juice – top up with water if you don’t have enough. 4. In a bowl, mix the arrowroot with the lemon juice and 1 tbsp water until it forms a paste. Whisk into the cherry mixture and cook over a medium heat until it reaches boiling point. Cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring continuously, until it is really thick. Remove from the heat and beat in the yolks and butter. Cool completely, then pour into the pastry case and chill for 20 minutes to firm up. 5. For the meringue, whisk the egg whites in a clean bowl until they form stiff peaks. Gradually whisk in the sugar until you have a glossy meringue. Pile on top of the filling, swirling with a palette knife to create peaks. Bake for 10-12 minutes until the meringue is lightly golden (if you have chilled the pie for longer it will need a couple of minutes more). Serve immediately with plenty of cream or ice cream.

Gardening tips

Gardening tasks for July In the flower garden

● Cut back faded perennial plants to keep borders tidy. ● Cutting back growth in hanging baskets can encourage new flowers and foliage and will revive the display. Make sure you that feed your baskets well after doing this. ● Cut back hardy Geraniums and Delphiniums after the first flush of flowers to encourage new growth and further blooms.

54 56

● Continue to tie in and train new growth on climbing plants. ● Prune Wisteria now. Just remove the whippy side-shoots from the main branch framework to about 20cm from their base (about five leaves from the main stem). ● Prune lupins to encourage further flowers. ● Divide clumps of Bearded Iris now so they have time to form roots and flowers buds for next year before the cold weather arrives. ● Take cuttings from your favourite tender plants for over-wintering indoors. Cuttings can also still be taken from shrubs and herbaceous perennials. ● Dead-head bedding plants and perennial plants to stop them selfseeding and to encourage further flowering. ● Dead-head your roses to keep them looking tidy. Leave the flowers in place if your rose produces attractive hips (seed pods). ● Dead-head sweet peas regularly to keep them blooming. Water daily in dry weather. ● Capture seed heads from dandelions and other weeds. Collect them before they get a chance to release their seeds and spread throughout your garden. ● Keep an eye out for pests on plants, early treatment is best. ● Look out for Clematis Wilt. Symptoms include wilting leaves and black discolouration on the leaves and stems. Cut out all affected material and dispose of it in your household waste.

In the vegetable garden

● Pinch out tomato side shoots each week. Cut off any leaves growing below the lowest ripening fruit trusses to improve air circulation and prevent diseases. ● Boost your tomato crop by regularly feeding them with dilute tomato fertiliser once a week. If leaves look pale and yellow feed more regularly. ● Feed crops with a general purpose fertiliser. ● Nip off the growing tips of squash and courgette to encourage branching. ● Plant second cropping potatoes now to give you new potatoes for Christmas. Plant your Christmas

potatoes in pots or bags which can be brought under cover before the first frosts. ● Resist the temptation to harvest more rhubarb stems. This allows the plant to build up reserves for next year. ● Water your fruit and vegetable crops daily in warm weather. Try to ensure that they are consistently moist. ● Control slugs to prevent them damaging your crops. Try using a natural pest control to reduce numbers.lettuce and tomatoes this month. ● Check for cabbage white butterfly eggs under brassica leaves and squash any that you find. ● Clear weeds regularly, as they compete with your crops for nutrients and water. ● Pepper plants will benefit from being potted on into progressively larger pots. ● Nip off the growing tips of squash and courgette to encourage branching. ● If you’re growing aubergines pinch out the growing tip once they have 5 or 6 fruits. Pick fruits while they are young. You can expect to start harvesting in mid to late summer.

● This is your last chance to feed your lawn with a special lawn fertiliser to encourage healthy green growth. ● Water your lawn during hot weather, particularly newly seeded or turfed lawns. Do not allow new lawns to dry out. ● If you are experiencing prolonged dry weather, set your mower blades higher to reduce stress on the grass. ● Warm weather encourages rapid weed growth - apply specific lawn weed killer to tackle this problem. ● Recut any lawn edges if needed. Try installing lawn edging to make future maintenance easier.

1789: The storming of the Bastille

On July 14th a momentous event took place which would change the course of France forever – the storming of the Bastille in Paris. Although only seven prisoners were being held in the medieval fortress at the time, the Bastille had become an icon of the despotic nature of the Ancient Regime and the monarchy. Further revolution followed and by 1792 the monarchy had been abolished completely.

1936: Start of the Spanish Civil War

On July 17th fighting broke out between those loyal to the newlyestablished Popular Front government and those who wanted a conservative, militaristic system. Although the Popular Front’s International Brigade was bolstered by around 30,000 nonSpanish citizens, General Franco’s forces, given substantial financial and military aid by Germany and Italy, eventually regained power on April 1st, 1939.

1953: Elvis Presley’s first recording

On July 18th Elvis Presley walked into Sun Studios in Memphis to record two tracks as a present for his mother Gladys. In January the next year, he

recorded That’s All Right Mama, which became his first single. A couple of years later he had his breakthrough with the single Heartbreak Hotel which went to number one in the United States and sold over 1 million copies.

1969: Man on the moon

Uttering the immortal words ‘One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind’, Neil Armstrong stepped down onto the lunar surface on July 20th 1969 and became the first person to set foot on the moon. Seen by a television audience of over 500 million, it brought to a close the so-called ‘Space Race’ between the USA and Russia which had started in October 1957, after the launch of Sputnik 1 by the Soviet Union.

1978: First test tube baby

The world’s first test tube baby was born on 25th July 1978. Louise Brown was delivered by caesarean section at Oldham and District General Hospital, weighing 5lb 12oz (2.61 kg). Her parents, Lesley and John Brown, had tried for nine years to have a child naturally but had been unsuccessful.

1985: Live Aid

On July 13th, 95% of the world’s TV sets tuned into Live Aid, the biggest rock event ever to be staged over

a one-day period and held to raise funds for famine relief in Ethiopia. An estimated £150 million was raised by he event, organised by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure and held at Wembley Stadium in England and JFK Stadium in America. Acts included U2, Queen, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, The Who, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin and Madonna.

1934: John Dillinger slain

On July 22nd bank robber John Dillinger was shot and killed by FBI agents as he left Chicago’s Biograph Movie Theater. After nine years in prison, Dillinger, labelled by the FBI as “Public Enemy No. 1”, went on a deadly crime spree, traveling through Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. He was reportedly betrayed by the “Lady in Red.”

1945: First atomic bomb detonated

Codenamed ‘Trinity’ the first experimental Atomic bomb was set off at 5:30 am on July 16th in the desert of New Mexico, creating a mushroom cloud rising 41,000 ft. Part of the Manhattan Project, the bomb emitted heat at more than three times the temperature of the interior of the sun and wiped out all plant and animal life within a mile.
