Thailand, Bali or Orlando
lidays - cheaper than Spain this Ho summer
I
f you haven’t yet booked your family’s summer holiday, it’s not too late. But here’s a surprise: a family holiday to Orlando, Thailand or Bali costs less than a trip with the kids to Menorca or Ibiza, new research has shown.
When taking into account flights, hotels of a similar standard, car hire and meals out, these three popular longhaul destinations are all cheaper than the two Balearic islands, according to the price comparison website TravelSupermarket. A family of four will save around £800 by opting for Phuket rather than Menorca - or £1,240 if they pick Florida over Ibiza.
How are exotic holidays cheaper than short-haul trips?
“People may think that their holiday budget can only stretch to the Mediterranean, and that they can’t afford long-haul, and that holidays are going to be more expensive this year due to volatile exchange rates,” explains Emma Coulthurst, a travel expert for TravelSupermarket. “But the reality is holiday package prices are lower this year in some locations and there are some real bargains to be grabbed, which provide the opportunity to experience longhaul travel for considerably less than you might imagine.”
Is there a catch? Summer is the Med’s season to shine, and the Balearics tend to score daily highs of 29C, with 11 hours of sun, and a low chance of rainfall. Bali’s weather report tells a nearly identical story; August is one of the best months to visit Indonesia, as it is the peak of the dry season. Phuket is more of a mixed bag in August: expect brief, heavy showers in the mornings, with temperatures around 31C. But this is a relatively
empty time of year for the island, so you’ll enjoy space on the beach - and good-value dining. Orlando will be steamier: in July and August, temperatures can top 33C, and some rainfall is likely. However, for families keen on child-focused activities, it’s hard to rival Orlando’s theme parks. Perhaps the biggest catch is the flight time. While you’ll reach Ibiza or Menorca in two-and-a-half hours, you’ll need nine hours to get to Orlando and 12 hours to fly to Phuket. Flights from London to Bali will include nearly 17 hours in the air - and it won’t be direct.
So it seems that British holidaymakers are missing a trick “We see most search for the Canaries, Majorca, the Algarve and the Balearics and Spanish mainland for the summer,” says Ms Coulthurst. “However, it is definitely worth comparing and contrasting what you can get in long-haul destinations and short haul destinations for the same dates, to ensure you get the most value from your holiday money and choose the best holiday for you”.
Although the pound’s value against the dollar has fallen since the Brexit referendum, eating out, as well as car hire and petrol, remain good value in Florida, Ms Coulthurst adds.

F
rom Alton Towers to Legoland, this is our guide to the best British theme parks, highlighting the best roller coasters, character-led attractions and animal safaris.
Alton Towers Surrounded by 800 acres of grounds, Alton Towers was once the Staffordshire seat of the Earl of Shrewsbury. Today, the ruined neoGothic mansion is at the centre of the Alton Towers Resort, with four hotels and a water park as well as the famous rollercoasters. Ample rides make this a thrill-seekers dream. A new CBeebies themed hotel coming this summer will broaden the site’s appeal to an even younger audience.
engine, gained a new ride in 2017 with James and the Red Balloon taking the total to over 25. It also has Europe’s biggest Thomas shop, so leave your credit card at home. Besides the train rides on offer here, Sodor classic car rides and appearances from the Fat Controller himself (among many other attractions) super-fans can now stay in Thomas and Friends-themed family hotel rooms too. Elsewhere, the family-owned park retains a more traditional day-out feel with a clutch of thrill rides joined by a more sedate zoo, including a monkey walk and a group of photogenic meerkats.
Drayton Manor
Chessington World of Adventures
The Staffordshire theme park includes rides for all ages but stands out for having hit on a winning formula for young families with its expanding Thomas Land section. This part of the park, dedicated to the beloved tank
Chessington is overshadowed by Thorpe Park and Alton Towers in terms of big rides, but this attractions park in Surrey has injected novelty this year with the launch of its exclusive Gruffalo River Ride Adventure,
cementing its status as a familyfriendly destination. Bringing to life the popular Julia Donaldson tale, this immersive recreation of the mouse’s journey through the deep dark wood adds some storybook magic to the more standard theme park offerings found here. The park’s zoo and Sea Life centre provide added family value, with animal-based attractions including monkey walk-throughs and the Zufari safari experience.
Legoland Windsor If you’re looking for stomach-in-themouth rollercoasters, Legoland is not for you. This is the entry-level theme park for families with kids below the age of 12, with bucket-loads to keep toddlers happy. Now in its third decade and set in lovely grounds, the theme park (on the former site of Windsor Safari Park) still has some of the charm of the original Danish parent park, with plenty of giraffes, crocodiles and pirates made out of Lego bricks scattered among the rides.
Blackpool Pleasure Beach
Pleasurewood Hills Theme Park Pleasurewood Hills theme park, set in 50 acres of coastal parkland near Great Yarmouth, offers eight “thrill” rides (including the stomach-churning Wipeout rollercoaster), daily sea lion and parrot shows and a good selection of “family” and “kiddie” rides. It has attractions to suit younger and older visitors - and it is cheaper than some other theme parks, even if you do not buy tickets online in advance.
Crealy Adventure Park, Devon Devon’s Crealy bills itself as the “south west’s number one family day out”, and with more than 60 rides and attractions set amongst picture-perfect English countryside, it’s a strong contender. The park has water rides, traditional fairground style attractions such as a carousel and swing rides, an animal barn and numerous play areas (indoor and outdoor). There’s something to keep most children entertained.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach Blackpool Pleasure Beach resembles Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound: roller coasters shooting off, screams, music and the fizzing of drinks - but it all coalesces into an intoxicating mix of unashamed joy. The park has been on Blackpool’s south shore since the 1890s and now has 125 rides and attractions, a dozen coasters (six of them wooden, topping anywhere else in Britain).
Wicksteed Park It may have been eclipsed in recent years by bigger and brasher contemporaries, but Wicksteed Park’s 47 acres of pretty open parkland, central lake, woodland path and relaxed pace offer a whole new generation of families the chance to make new memories without the pressure of an overly commercialised culture. Charmingly, many of the rides - from the go karts and bumper cars to crazy golf, Clip n Climb and zip wire - involve

the whole family, so rather than a single focus on thrill seeking (though there’s plenty of that too) you’ll have fun as well as actually interact with one another. With easy access to the car park and rolling pastures, why not take a picnic? When the staff look to be having as much fun as the punters, you know you’re on to a winner!
Thorpe Park Situated near Chertsey, 20 miles from London, Thorpe Park is not for the faint-hearted. It has some of the biggest roller coasters in Europe and the rides here are built to scare. It is perfect for adrenalin junkies and thrill seekers, but there are limited alternatives for small children.

The Jaguar I-Pace: fast, nimble, desirable… and electric A s motorists slowly make the switch to electric cars, the multi-award winning Jaguar I-Pace proves that the future of motoring is different, but equally thrilling.
Few people would guess that Jaguar’s I-Pace is electric. We still think of EVs as being clumsy, boat-like affairs. But this Jag is a different beast. It’s fast, nimble, desirable, high-performing and electric.
Motoring
Alongside the likes of the bestselling Nissan Leaf and Kia Niro, high-end manufacturers realise there is also a swelling demand for premium cars that are as clean as they are sumptuous. This niche has been dominated by Tesla, which has had a halo effect on other carmakers as they realise what is achievable when you put your mind to petrol-free transportation - or as Jaguar’s CEO Dr Ralf Speth calls it: “Destination Zero!”
Jaguar’s premium EV has swept all before it this year. It scored a historic hat trick by winning the 2019 World Car of the Year, the World Car Design of the Year and the World Green Car of the Year, becoming the first vehicle ever to win all three categories at once. So far more than 11,000 I-Paces have been delivered in more than 60 countries, with 1,800 sold in Britain alone.
From the outside, the I-Pace is a real showstopper. The cab-forward profile gives it a proper sense of drama, while the chopped nose flanked by frowning front lights hovering over the large air-intakes gives it a meaningful snarl. There is nothing apologetic about it. It’s green and mean. The rear end mirrors the front - it is squared-off with thin, beady wraparound lights. The bonnet is vented, there are large, technical-looking wheels, and polished panels give it a nipped-in waist. Flush doorhandles and a flying spoiler complete the picture. There is nothing about the car that makes you think the I-Pace is an EV. It’s a performance SUV first, an eco-wagon second. Under the polished skin you’ll find a smart and sophisticated operator. Power comes
courtesy of two concentric electric motors, one on each axle for permanent four-wheel power. To drive, it has the remorseless appeal of a Scalextric car - one that never spins off the track or burns through its brushes. There are no gears, you just squeeze the throttle as hard as you like and off you go. It doesn’t so much flatter your driving, as get on its knees in fawning obseqioiusness. Along with the digital dashboard and large

If you wish to visit Menorca for two weeks, flying from the same airport on the same day, and in a similar hotel, the cheapest price available is £958 per person, 25 per cent more.
“These long-haul bargains also apply for couples”, notes Ms Coulthurst. “Normally, we’d say to avoid the school holiday dates if you haven’t got children and are going short-haul. However, the cheapest time to go long haul to many destinations, including Thailand and Bali, is May to August.”

“However, it is definitely worth comparing and contrasting what you can get in long-haul destinations and short haul destinations for the same dates, to ensure you get the most value from your holiday money and choose the best holiday for you”.

rom Alton Towers to Legoland, this is our guide to the best British theme parks, highlighting the best roller coasters, character-led attractions and animal safaris.

More of the best smart home gadgets
Continued from last month... Each of the devices here has its own smartphone app so you can control it remotely. Most work with any smartphone using their dedicated apps, but some, Eve products for instance, only work with Apple gadgets. For the best results, it’s worth having one of the systems that can control the gadgets directly. Apple, Google and Amazon have smart speakers which can hear you across the room and can be controlled by voice.
when it senses someone walking past it. Works with Apple, but only through the Nest iPhone app.
Eve Energy: £44.95
Nest Protect: £109 Compatible systems: Amazon, Google This is the most elegant smoke and carbon monoxide alarm you’re likely to see. It’s a smart sensor too, as it can tell the difference between smoke and steam.
Eve Button: £44.95 Compatible systems: Apple A smart home is all very well, but sometimes people prefer an actual button to press. This portable switch is a great solution. You configure it to do certain tasks and button presses achieve them. So, for instance, a single press might turn on all the lights in the living room, a double press could turn on the kitchen lights and a long press could be the last thing you do in the evening, so the button turns off all the lights downstairs, locks the front door and switches on the lights in the bedroom.
Nest Hello: £229: And instead of the shrill and unpleasant noise most smoke alarms make, this one speaks a warning before the alarm proper goes off. It alerts your phone, too. It comes in two versions, wired and battery-powered. If you have the battery version, it alerts you when the battery needs replacing instead of chirruping annoyingly late at night when you’re half asleep. If you have Nest Thermostat, the two can work together so if Protect detects an emergency, Thermostat turns off the heating. It even works as a night light
Compatible systems: Amazon, Google Like the Ring (featured last month) this is a video doorbell. When someone is loitering nearby, it alerts you, even if they don’t press the button. When they do press the doorbell, your phone rings and, if you have Google Home, you’ll get a voice alert on the speaker as well as hearing it ring.
Compatible systems: Apple A smart power switch is one of the simplest ways to get into home automation. This device plugs into your wall socket and then you can plug your light or fan or kettle or whatever into the switch. Then, instead of stumbling across a darkened room to reach the switch, you can just say: “Hey, Siri, turn the living room light on,” for instance. It’s easy to set up and it even monitors electrical consumption, too.
Netatmo Welcome: £199.99 Compatible systems: Google The Welcome is a proficient, classily designed security camera which you place anywhere indoors. It’s a smooth aluminium cylinder that looks good enough to have on display. Face recognition means it can automatically turn off video recording for familiar faces. It has local data storage on board, but also uploads video to the cloud. Unlike other smart cameras, there’s no video subscription charge as you save data to your Dropbox account, for example.

Korean chilli, sesame
Recipe & honey chicken
A kebab always goes down well at a BBQ, and this Korean chicken with sweet, spicy and sticky glaze is our new favourite. Scatter over spring onions to serve
Method 1 Toss the chicken in the soy sauce, sesame oil and ginger. Thread each thigh on two long metal skewers, so that each skewer pierces one side of the thigh. Keep threading the chicken, making sure it’s packed onto the skewers tightly.
Chill until you’re ready to cook. Mix the ingredients for the glaze.
2 Heat the BBQ. If using a coal BBQ, wait for the coals to turn ashen before you start cooking. Cook the kebab for 5-8 mins on each side (depending on the heat). Once nicely charred but not fully cooked through, start painting on the glaze. The honey will catch if
cooked for too long - the key to nice sticky chicken is applying the glaze in layers, turning the kebab often.
3 When the pastry case has Once the glaze has been used up and the chicken is cooked through (it’ll take about 20 mins in total), transfer to a plate and leave to cool for 5 mins before serving scattered with spring onions.
Ingredients ● 12 chicken thighs, boneless and skinless ● 2 tbsp soy sauce ● 1 tbsp sesame oil ● thumb-sized piece ginger, grated ● 4 spring onions, sliced
For the glaze ● 4 tbsp Korean chilli paste (gochujang) or use a mixture of 3 tbsp ketchup and 1 tbsp sriracha chilli sauce ● 2 tbsp honey ● juice ½ lime ● 1 tbsp soy sauce ● 1 tsp sesame oil ● 4 heaped tbsp cornflour ● 2 tbsp sesame seeds

External doors A guide to choosing, costing and fitting
They can make or break the look of your home and should dramatically improve energy efficiency and security. One of the most important decisions when designing a new extension or renovating a house is the type of doors you include. Glazed doors connect a room to the garden, and may also be used for upstairs rooms if planning and building regulations are met for issues such as overlooking neighbours and safety. Here are our top things to consider when choosing external doors.
Consider where the door is going to be It’s important to plan ahead when fitting doors to make potentially tricky decisions about drainage and floor levels. The size and position of the door opening is a key part of the house’s plans, and any late changes may need planning approval and could be costly. If possible, try to see your preferred doors before buying, rather than choosing from a brochure picture.
42
Decide on a style of door
Choose your frame finish
Bifold doors
Aluminium doors
A popular choice for many people, bifolds are made up of a set of glazed panels and can slide or concertina, effectively opening up the entire wall of a house allowing for unrestricted access. They can open left or right, inside or outside, and even fold around corners.
Popular for contemporary homes, aluminium frames can be supplied in virtually any colour. They’re also lightweight, strong and maintenancefree.
It’s also possible to fit bifolds with a single door, which can then be used on its own. There will need to be space for stacking inward-opening doors and the sturdy design of bifolds means more framework and less glass is on view when the doors are shut.
Sliding doors These tend to be made up of two or more large glass panels, opening and closing in line on a track, with one panel sliding behind the other. They offer large areas of glass but the view will be inhibited even when the doors are fully open because the frames don’t recess completely.
French doors More traditional in design, these usually consist of two outward- or inwardopening doors, and may be fitted with fixed panes of glass either side to increase the glazed area. The frame usually creates a step, rather than the level threshold that bifolds offer.
Composite doors Made from a mixture of materials, composite doors are often more expensive. Those made from timber tend to be clad in a weatherproof material, for a tough, low-maintenance exterior.
Timber doors These offer good thermal properties and a classic look. However, they’re also vulnerable to the weather, need treating and maintaining, and can be prone to warping.
Steel doors Used in buildings since the Thirties, Crittall-style steel frames are back in fashion. They combine a slender look with the benefits of thermal performance, security, durability and easy maintenance.
UPVC doors Good value and weather-resistant, uPVC doors don’t need painting and are easy to maintain. But it’s nigh-on impossible to alter the size of them once they’re ordered and fitted.

Health
The seven most overrated health foods
T
he word ‘superfood’ is thrown around a lot these days, but in many instances, health claims made about certain foods are not all they’re cracked up to be. So before you go stocking up your fridge with the latest expensive food fads that claim to make you a healthier person, take a look at these overrated foods.
Goji Berries One area where goji berries outshine other fruits is in price, but in terms of nutritional value, they rank pretty much alongside any other berries. Little research has been done, however, to prove that the goji berry is better than any other berry for maintaining good health. Stick to some of the more widely available berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries) to get the same health benefits for a fraction of the cost.
Egg Whites
Acai Berry Juice Celebrities and health magazines have been raving about the benefits of these little purple fruits for years, but is acai berry juice really worth all of the hype? According to research... not really. Despite some of the health claims made, studies have shown that acai juice is pretty average in comparison to other fruits. In fact, acai berry juice was found to be lower in antioxidants than blueberry juice, pomegranate juice and even red wine.
Agave Nectar Agave nectar has been hailed as the healthy alternative to sugar. While it’s true that agave nectar has a low glycemic index, it is still high in the simple sugar fructose. As fructose occurs naturally in food such as fruit, many people consider it ‘healthy,’ but when consumed in high amounts, fructose can become difficult for your liver to process and it can cause longterm effects on your blood sugar levels. If a sugar substitute sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.
If you separate the yolk from the white of the egg, then you’re essentially cutting out the best part. Egg yolks do contain dietary cholesterol which is why some people avoid them, but your body actually needs cholesterol to repair and build cells. And while it’s true that leaving out the yolk will cut the calorie count, you’ll also be missing out on most of the nutrients found in an egg including protein, iron, vitamins A, D, E, B12, selenium and folate amongst other things. So we’re not saying don’t eat egg whites, we’re simply saying, eat the yolks too.
Granola
Yoghurt
Smoothies
Some yoghurt can be healthy, but unfortunately flavoured yoghurts don’t fall into this category as they often contain a lot of added sugar and artificial sweeteners. Natural yoghurt is a good source of calcium and it can be a great way to get probiotics into your diet. If you want the health benefits of yoghurt, then stick to plain, full-fat unsweetened varieties, and add your own fruit if you’re looking for a sweet topping.
46
Granola might sound like the ideal breakfast option, loaded with oats, grains, dried fruit and nuts, and granted it does have some health benefits, but some shop bought granola is much higher in calories than people realise. A mixture of sugar and oil is used to hold the pieces of granola together and some packets of the cereal include added pieces of chocolate. Make the swap from granola to a simple bowl of porridge or muesli to cut the high calories and reduce your sugar intake. A drink made from fruit might sound like the perfect solution to all of your health woes, but while smoothies can be a nutritious option when made correctly, some shop bought versions are full of refined sugars and syrups. As with any food, fruit should also be enjoyed in moderation, so while one smoothie a day will help your body get the vitamins and nutrients it needs, three or four a day will drastically raise your sugar intake.

The UK is slowly but surely switching to electric vehicles. Last year we bought more plug-in hybrid cars than ever before and the next few years will see a surge in demand as we ditch fossil fuels in favour of electricity.

Along with the digital dashboard and large
infotainement screen, it feels more like a driving game than driving in the real world. Some will hate that, but I loved it. So far, so very good. But now we come to the vexed issue of charging. Clearly topping up the battery is not like filling up at the petrol station. On a slow charge it takes up to 10 hours to do 80%, on a fast charge (if you can find a 100kW point) it’s 40 minutes. It’s complicated. There are different plugs and different providers, subscriptions and membershipsMost owners will charge at home or at work, but it’s all a bit chicken and egg. EVs need a charging infrastructure to be viable, but there aren’t enough EVs yet to justify a grid. But we’ll get there. Apart from anything, we have to

July Horoscopes Aries (March 21-April 19) You may find yourself questioning things and going over and over the same ground during July. There could be some confusion over what course of action to take. It is probably best to take time out to consider it rationally rather than making a rash decision.
Taurus (April 20-May 20) Your friends and family will need you this month. The likelihood is that you will need them too. July for Taureans is set to be a relaxing Horoscope month where time is spent with friends and family. It’s a time to enjoy yourself and relax, take time out and not feel guilty about it.
Gemini (May 21-June 20) If you have been puzzling over what you really want out of life and you’ve been pondering events out of your control, your mind should feel less anxious and you will gain some of the clarity which you have been searching for. Certainly, you will feel more optimistic about your position in life.
Cancer (June 21-July 22) Try to be as determined and as focused as you can this month. There may be deadlines which need to be met as well as promises which have to be kept. Your criteria for success could be based on a balanced approach, so allow yourself sufficient time to accomplish any tasks that may lie ahead.
Leo (July 23-August 22) Be prepared to dress up this month and get your party clothes out for a whirl of social engagements including date nights, parties, events and functions. Your feet won’t touch the ground and you will be happy in the company of others. You will be in high spirits and nothing is likely to dampen your morale.
Virgo (August 23-September 22) This is the perfect time to start a detox programme and get yourself back into shape, your Virgo portents suggest. If you have neglected visits to the gym or engaging in physical activity then this month is perfect for getting yourself back on track.
Libra (September 23-October 22) This could be a tricky period where you will struggle with work colleagues and with changes in your work circumstances. You might well seek advice from your seniors and you would be advised to listen very carefully to what they have to say. If you ignore this advice you are likely to feel even more bewildered.
Scorpio (October 23-November 21) What a lovely month for romance! Scorpions could find themselves falling easily and effortlessly in love. For those less impressionable, there could be an opportunity to rekindle things with an old flame who turns up out of the blue. This period could allow an opportunity for a trip down memory lane.
Sagittarius (November 22-December 21) You may feel the need to seek out meditation, Yoga or Reiki healing. Certainly, you could feel the need to slow down since the pace of your life and career has become very fast of late. You may recognise the signs that it’s time to take a break and chill out and take some time away from it all.
Capricorn (December 22-January 19) You will be in a positive frame of mind this month and your focus is likely to be on the persona you project to other people. If you dissect your past mistakes you could easily make amends for any indiscretions. It is well within your capabilities to improve your sense of well-being and correct past errors.
Aquarius (January 20-February 18) This is a 30-day period where your family is likely to need your attention more than ever. A younger member of the family could need some help and support. You could find that you lose your temper more easily over trivial things. Try to remain calm and rational at all times.
Pisces (February 19-March 20) Your finances are likely to be in spectacular order this month and, as a result of this, personal relationships will benefit and your own inner peace and harmony will be restored. You will feel extremely positive and optimistic for the future. People will be drawn to you for your good humour and sensible advice.

Take al fresco dining to a new level If you’re a keen cook who loves to entertain (and you have space), an outdoor kitchen will transform both your garden and your summer gatherings. There are plenty of options to choose from when it comes to outdoor kitchens - not only are barbecues available everywhere you look, so are pizza ovens, cabinets, worktops, and sinks. Here we shortlist the super-stylish kit you need… Consider an overhead covering The beauty of a solid structure overhead is that you can plan garden parties without consulting the weather forecast. The best outdoor kitchens provide ample food preparation space and worksurface for pots, crockery and utensils, as well as seating. A long chimney will funnel smoke away from both the structure and your eyes.
Entertain at an outdoor cocktail bar Give your entertaining a cocktail-bar buzz, without leaving home. Select key fittings, such as an outdoor wine fridge or sink, then build the bar around these. Choose materials that can withstand year-round exposure, such as a well-sealed natural stone top and treated wood cladding.
60
so it’s important to choose a suitable material for your work surface. Avoid wood, and go for concrete or stainless steel instead. You could use stone tiles, slabs or flagstones, too, but they should be treated with an acrylic sealer. This will make them more weather resistant and easier to clean.
Install an outdoor sink
Find a budget outdoor kitchen Once you’ve worked out your budget, shop around to find a range that’s right for you. Ikea has a fantastic range of affordable outdoor kitchen products, including this charcoal barbecue with a detachable trolley and storage cabinet. They also, of course, have matching garden furniture to complete the look.
Position a place for food prep Make sure that you have ample space for food preparation. You won’t want to have to walk back and forth to the kitchen or garden table with all your food in tow. Be sure to keep cooked and uncooked food separate so as not to contaminate one another.
Choose a weatherproof countertop Your outdoor kitchen is going to be exposed to all weather conditions,
For the full al fresco experience, include a sink in your outdoor kitchen so you can do your washing up in the open air, too. However, installing the plumbing required can be costly. You could look to positioning your sink on an external wall of the house, below an existing outdoor tap to minimise the cost, but you’ll still need to consider a hot water supply.
Stay warm with an outdoor fire When dinner is finished and you’re relaxing with full tummies, what better way to keep the evening going strong than by cosying up under blankets and lighting the fire?
Where’s the best place to install one? As a rule, outdoor kitchens are best situated fairly close to the house and always on level decking or a patio. Look to position yours against a brick wall (not wooden fencing for obvious reasons) and try to keep it away from walkways.

1776: United States sign Declaration of Independence The Declaration of Independence was approved by Congress on July 4, 1776. It proclaimed that the former Thirteen Colonies then at war with Great Britain were now a sovereign, independent nation and thus no longer a part of the British Empire. The signers’ names are grouped by state, with the states arranged geographically from north to south.
1997: Hong Kong handed over to China The July 1st handover marked the end of British rule in Hong Kong. Hong Kong was Britain’s last substantial overseas territory, with a population of approximately 6.5 million in 1997, which represented approximately 97% of the population of the British Dependent Territories as a whole at that time. Consequently, the handover is regarded by some as the final act of the British Empire.
1981: Toxteth riots Against a background of economic recession and record unemployment, the heavy-handed arrest of Leroy Alphonse Cooper on Friday July 3, watched by an angry crowd, led to a disturbance in which three policemen were injured. Over the weekend that followed, the
70

Preparing mentally for a marathon
M
arathon training is not just physical but also mental. When you run a marathon there are two main aspects that can have a great bearing on the performance - the training you have done leading into the race, and secondly the mental aspect of the race. If you have done all the training you have set out to do in the months before the race, and you are on the start line with no injuries, then you are half way there to having a great race. There is no reason you should be thinking negatively as there is nothing more you could have done up until this point.
The race start When the race starts you want to be relaxed and comfortable for the first few miles, there is no need to push the first couple of miles and start panicking that you are not on your set pace. The last thing you want to be thinking is how far there is left to run. Getting to
74
2 miles and thinking to yourself “There are 24 miles to go!!” is not going to help you. You need to break the race up in your head and tick these off as you go. What some athletes do is break the race up into 4 x 10km (then a little 2km sprint at the end!). This is effectively a quarter of the race and is much easier to get your head round than the whole race distance.
rather than how you are feeling. Just keep thinking positive thoughts and think of all the training you have done to get you to this point. You don’t want doubt setting in, you CAN do this, you WILL run well.
Don’t worry if your mind starts to wander
You are going to go through at least one bad patch in the race, perhaps even a couple. There is no way round this, you just need to deal with it when it comes and know that it will not last long. If you have done the training then you know physically you can handle the marathon and you need to focus on riding out the bad patch.
You are not going to be able to focus for the whole race, your mind will start wandering during the race and this is ok, providing you don’t wander for too long! Take in some of the sights on the course, but slowly get back to focusing on the race and getting to the next checkpoint in your head. Don’t be put off by runners going past you, you need to run your own race and not focus on anyone else - unless of course they are your own personal pace maker.
During a bad phase it might be an idea to set smaller targets, for example breaking the race up into 1km intervals. Get to the next 1km and then the next, and so on. This will keep you focused on the distance and you should hopefully maintain your pace. This will allow you to focus on something else
Half the battle of the marathon is getting to the start line in one piece having had a solid build up in training not full of disruptions. If you can do that, all you have to do is put into practice what you have been doing in training. Think of it as a training run with thousands of other people!
