SAFETY TIPS FOR HOT WEATHER... W

summertime! Sunshine, longer days and warmer weather makes us more active with our pet, as we make the most of our time outdoors before cooler weather looms. With summer here and with even more heatwaves to come, dog owners do anything they can to make sure their pooch is cool and comfortable and sometimes forget it’s important to take care of themselves in the summer months, too.

HERE ARE A FEW TOP TIPS FOR SUMMER SELF-CARE AS A DOG OWNER. YOU NEED WATER, TOO While out on a walk you might have packed a bottle of water for your dog or taken a route that passes the local river so that your dog can go for a cooling dip but don’t forget that water is important for you, too. Our body loses a lot more fluids in the summer so it’s important to make sure we replace the lost H2O to stay fit and healthy.

SUN CREAM While we always remember to

lather our kids with sunscreen, it’s just as important as adults and can drastically decrease your risk of developing skin cancer. Even when the sun is hiding behind the clouds on a grey summer’s day just remember that up to 80 per cent of its rays can still pass through.

IT’S OKAY NOT TO GO OUT If it’s just too hot outside for you and your dog, then it’s okay to stay indoors. Don’t feel bad for taking a day away from the sun, your dog will probably appreciate it too. It might be the perfect opportunity to introduce some new games.

GET AN INDOOR FAN Our houses are full of windows which is perfect for letting the daylight in and light up our space. But this also means that our rooms can get uncomfortably hot, and sometimes it may not be possible to open the windows if you have a mischievous dog or young puppy. Indoor fans are relatively inexpensive and mean that

you can stay inside and enjoy a cool environment without getting hot and bothered, and not have to worry about your pet escaping.

BUY A PADDLING POOL When it’s hot there’s nothing better than dipping your feet in cold water so why not buy a paddling pool that you and your dog can enjoy. There are plenty of different dogfriendly pools out there these days, from rigid plastic ones to collapsible or foldable tubs to save on space when the sun goes into hiding again in winter.

OTHER PEOPLE’S DOGS It’s not just you making the most of the weather with your dog, all the other owners are too! Which means there are more dogs out-and-about during the summertime and it’s likely there will be interactions between them and you. While most dogs are relatively well-behaved with humans, other dogs or children can get them excitable or aggressive and sometimes this can turn into a fight or brawl. Learn how to spot the signs of aggression or excitement in dogs, and the best ways of dealing with them and defusing a situation. Taking care of yourself will ensure that the best you can look after your dog and you’ll both stay safe this summer.

Holidays Nine extraordinary places to stay in the UK

Magic Bus: Lake District

W

ith the continued uncertainty about overseas holidays we’ve come up with nine extraordinary places to stay for a holiday in the UK.

Inside out cabin North Cornwall Sleeps 6 | From £235 a night With folding walls that slide upwards and a large outdoor deck, the Danish Cabin, on the coast near Tintagel, aims to make the most of the surrounding wilderness. The wooden structure sits on stilts above a stream, in a private forest less than two miles from the beach. Sleeping six in two bunks and two fold-out beds, it also has hanging wicker egg chairs, a composting toilet and a firepit. It’s on an off-grid campsite, and there’s a larger shared kitchen, a bar, wood-fired hot tubs, breakfast packages to order and hot showers.

Magic Bus Lake District Sleeps 2 | From £100 a night Hinterlandes, an American Community bus with a VW van welded to the top, may well be the most unusual entry on this list. The van is continually relocated

16 16

to wild sites around the Lake District – and guests are given the secret locations via the what3words app. It has a marbleclad shower, kitchenette, woodburner, firepit and wood-fired hot tub. A roving, trailer-mounted cabin is launching in spring. Bikes are available for hire. on stilts above a stream.

Airship pod West Sussex Sleeps 3 | From £130 a night A spaceship has landed near Billingshurst in West Sussex. The Sussex Airship is a retro sci-fi-style structure that looks like a spacecraft parked in private woodland in the village of Haven. It sleeps three in one double and one single sofa bed, and has a small kitchen, bathroom, barbecue area and views across surrounding meadows from the portholes and floor-to-ceiling windshield. Bushcraft sessions are offered on site, and the hills, heathland, towns and villages of the South Downs national park are a short drive away.

Baroque tower Manchester Rooms 270 | From £95 room only The 1895 baroque-style tower of the Kimpton Clocktower Hotel (formerly the Principal) looms over the city centre. The

Grade-II listed building was once the headquarters of the Refuge Assurance Company, then various hotels, and after extensive renovation it became the Principal in 2016. Unattractive 1990s additions have been removed, and original mouldings and stained-glass windows have been restored. The winter garden room’s soaring, domed atrium is a showstopper, part of the Refuge bar and dining room, run by DJs-turnedrestaurateurs Luke Cowdrey and Justin Crawford.

Keep on trucking Pows Sleeps 2 | From £90 a night Pantechnicon Powys is a former removals van in Mid Wales that is now a hillside retreat sitting among lavender beds. The side of the vehicle was cut out to make the entrance and recycled into a table top. The space is compact, with a cabin bed, small kitchen and a seating area, and large double doors opening onto the deck. From here, there are views across the farm, which was Wales’s first producer of lavender oil. Outside, there’s a firebowl, a tree swing and swimming pond for a dip in summer after hiking nearby uplands of Mynydd Epynt or around the Brecon Beacons.

Holy retreat Northumberland Sleeps 8 | From £118 a night The 19th-century Greystead Old Church, on a riverbank in the North Tyne Valley, west of the village of Bellingham, was converted into a holiday home in 2013. Many of the Grade-II listed building’s original features have been retained and restored, including a Victorian stainedglass window, Georgian panelling, stone lancet windows and the flagstone floor. Covering two-thirds of the former nave is a first-floor mezzanine with openplan kitchen-dining space. Downstairs, where the altar once stood, there’s a living room with a woodburner and four bedrooms, one with an original fireplace. It’s a short drive to Kielder Water & Forest Park, and Hadrian’s Wall.

made cosy by wool throws, splashes of yellow and a woodburner. Made from local, sustainable materials, with a composting toilet, it’s on the Minginish peninsula in the island’s south-west, handy for walks and climbs in the nearby Cuillin mountain range and on the coast around Talisiker and Fiscavaig Bay.

walk the Saxon Shore Way, which runs through the nearby village of Stone-inOxney, home to the Ferry Inn. Tenterden, Rye and the beach at Camber Sands are all within easy reach too.

Holy retreat: Northumberland

Shepherd’s hut Romney Marsh, Kent Sleeps 2 | From £299 for three nights Romney Marsh is dotted with the remnants of small brick “lookers” – shelters used by shepherds in the 18th and 19th centuries. Now one of them, The Lookers Legacy, has been transformed into a stylish hideaway for two with a timber extension and

Airship pod: West Sussex

Captain’s Table Hampshire

Corrugated eco-house Isle of Skye Sleeps 2 | From £82 a night A compact shipping container-esque modern cabin on the shore of Loch Bracadale, Fiscavaig Studio has a corrugated iron-panelled exterior and a timber and woodchip board interior

views across the neighbouring vineyard. Inside there are the usual trappings of the modern retreat – woodburner, bare brick, fur throws, hot tub – but it’s the setting that makes it special. It stands on its own in a grassy field, surrounded by green and pleasant countryside and surrounding fields. Guests could

Sleeps 3 | From £86 a night Architects Alice and Henning Stummel appeared on Channel 4’s Grand Designs with their London home (the Tin House, shortlisted for RIBA House of the Year). Their repurposed Boat Shed in Royal Lymington Yacht Club dinghy yard is close to the busy harbour, but this little, shingle-clad retreat is on a quiet road and has a private garden. The ground floor has a queen-size sofa bed, a small kitchen and dining table, and another single bed on the mezzanine (suitable for older children). There’s a woodburner (but no wifi or TV) and plenty to explore nearby, including the Sea Water Baths in Lymington, the Sea Wall Coastal Walk and the New Forest – less than 10 minutes away by train.

TV BOX SETS T

he lockdown has meant that we’ve all found ourselves with more time on our hands - and that means more time to dive into what Netflix has to offer and discover your next TV bingewatch. Netflix adds new original series and old favourites (and, yes, sometimes takes them away again) at a rate that is frankly

dizzying, but here are seven series showing now that are sure to keep you entertained this month... and beyond!

Ozark

3 seasons Starring: Jason Bateman,Laura Linney, Sofia Hublitz Creators: Bill Dubuque, Mark Williams Compared by many to Breaking Bad, the story centres around Marty Byrd

(Jason Bateman) and his wife Wendy (Laura Linney), daughter Charlotte (Sophia Hublitz) and son Jonah (Skylar Gaertner) as they are forced to go on the run from Chicago to the Ozark lakes in Missouri after Marty’s money-laundering operation for a drug gang goes wrong and their lives are in imminent danger. But things just get more complicated as they find themselves instantly embroiled in a strange and brutal world they don’t understand – and quickly learn that your problems have a habit of catching up with you and that secrets are harder to keep than you think.

Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness 1 season The story centres around Joe Exotic, a big-cat owner who has had lions, tigers and many, many other animals in his GW Zoo, Oklahoma.

Ozark

Exotic is a colourful man who, aside from having multiple husbands, became fixated with the “thorn in his side”, animal rights activist Carole Baskin. Carole tried multiple times to shut down GW Zoo, believing Exotic’s actions to be troublesome. But in a way of firing back, Exotic claimed she killed her own husband and fed him to her own collection of wild cats – a claim she vehemently denies. If that doesn’t sound completely insane already, be assured Tiger King gets a lot stranger.

Tiger King

Money Heist 4 seasons Starring: Úrsula Corberó, Álvaro Morte, Itziar Ituño Creator: Álex Pina Money Heist - better known as La Casa de Papel in its native Spain - is not only the most-watched non-English show on Netflix, but one of the most-watched series overall on the streaming service. The crime drama, which follows a crack team of thieves assembled by “The Professor”, sees the gang attempt to walk away with billions of euros after a daring heist on the Royal Mint in Spain.

Money Heist 20

There are four seasons of Money Heist to watch, so why not see what all the fuss is about?

Please mention Inside Flintshire Magazine when responding to advertisements

After Life 2 seasons Starring: Ricky Gervais, Tom Basden, Tony Way Creator: Ricky Gervais Regarded by many as some of Ricky Gervais’ finest TV work since Extras, After Life is - as you would expect from Gervais - a very awkward and at times quite troubling comedy which follows the story of Tony, whose life is turned upside down after his wife dies of cancer. Contemplating suicide, he decides instead to take his misery out on the rest of the world by saying and doing whatever he likes.

After Life The Last Dance

It’s a lot funnier than it sounds, and the second season recently arrived on Netflix – so fill your boots (and be prepared for a bit of bad language).

The Last Dance 1 season Starring: Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman You have heard of Michael Jordan. You know Michael Jordan. It’s Michael Jordan. But do you actually know Michael Jordan? The cultural impact of the basketball titan is splashed across the globe. The brand, the iconic Jumpman logo is stamped onto every Nike product - from shoes to football shirts – that image is pressed into our mind. If you grew up watching Jordan in action, The Last Dance will be a solid nostalgia trip for you, a sporting fix designed to evoke the romanticism of sport in the 90s. If Jordan’s meaning to you has been limited to a silhouette designed to sell shoes and shirts, The Last Dance is your chance to learn the legend for yourself.

Dead To Me

Dead To Me 2 seasons Starring: Christina Applegate, Linda Cardellini, James Marsden Creator: Liz Feldman Christina Applegate puts in a careerbest performance in this brilliant black comedy from writer Liz Feldman, which became the must-see, mosttalked-about Netflix show when it first appeared last year. After losing her husband in a hit-andrun accident, Jen (against her better judgement) attends a group grief counselling session and begrudgingly starts talking to Judy. They bond over mutual loss and quickly become firm friends, turning to each other in their darkest hours. However, one of the women is guarding a terrible secret that threatens to upend their friendship and derail both of their lives entirely.

The Last Kingdom The Last Kingdom 4 seasons Starring: Alexander Dreymon, Emily Cox, David Dawson You might remember seeing the first two series of The Last Kingdom - which is based on the Saxon Stories novels by Sharpe creator Bernard Cornwell - on the BBC, but the show switched hands to Netflix for season three.

Set in the 9th-century AD, the show tells the story of rugged hero Uhtred son of Uhtred, a Saxon boy who is brought up by Danes, after they capture him and decide to raise him as their own. Of course this leads to split loyalties and Uhtred is eventually accused of killing his adoptive father, forcing him to flee to another kingdom.

FLINT WILL BE PLAYING IN THE TOP TIER OF WELSH FOOTBALL FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 22 SEASONS!

T

HE news was announced this afternoon following a meeting of the FAW board.

With Cymru North champions Prestatyn Town having failed in their Tier 1 licence application, as runners up, Flint were eligible for promotion having gained the licence, Chairman Darryl Williams was ecstatic at the news, and commented: "Getting Flint Town United into the Cymru Premier has been my overriding ambition since becoming Chair five years ago. This means the world, and is a tribute to all the club stalwarts who have stood by it through thick and thin, and it will be fantastic for the supporters and the people of Flint. I would like to pay special thanks to our main sponsors Essity, who have really backed the club over the time I've been involved, and this is just reward for their fantastic support. Of course, the journey doesn't end here. Having achieved one objective we must now stabilise and seek to become an established Cymru Premier side, as we are in it for the long haul. And then, next on my list, is to get our magnificent football club into Europe" Our Chairman Darryl Williams is pictured celebrating the news with his sons Ed and Tom. And it's also Ed's 21st birthday today, so a double celebration in the Williams household ! Many happy returns Ed from all at Flint Town United.

MOTORING

Golf R Plus - with hybrid power V

olkswagen is out to reclaim its hot hatch crown with a four-pronged assault that could include an electrified 402bhp hyper hatch to take on the Mercedes-AMG A45. We’re expecting the new hot-hatch to look like an even more aggressive version of the Golf R. Facing stiff competition from newer rivals, such as the Hyundai i30 N and Honda Civic Type R, VW is mounting a multi-tier approach for its refreshed performance hatch line-up. Leading the charge is the all-new GTI which is set to arrive in the second quarter of 2021. VW’s EA888 turbocharged 2.0-litre remains the centrepiece under the bonnet of the new GTI, producing 242bhp and 295lb ft. The main development for the Mk8 GTI is the introduction of VW’s Vehicle Dynamics Manager system, which controls the adaptive dampers and locking front differential, promising to provide a greater breadth of ability between its maximum comfort setting and full attack mode. Yet to be shown officially but also due for a 2021 release is the 8th-generation Golf R, a hotter flagship that will build on the GTI’s DNA. Leaked internal documents show the hotly anticipated pinnacle of the line-up (at least in the short-term) is unlikely to shift away from a proven formula, instead stepping up outputs from the familiar 2.0-litre fourcylinder turbo to 329bhp. At that level it will be the most powerful production Golf to date. Drive will continue through all four wheels and the chassis will be appropriately tweaked to handle the extra punch, along with DCC (Dynamic Chassis Control) adaptive dampers. Spy pics of the top-secret model testing in the Swedish snow show dual exhausts hanging from either side of the rear end.Blue brake calipers pinching cross-drilled front rotors promise to

34

bolster stopping power, while a revised bumper and unique lower rear diffuser assist with cooling and high-speed stability while also ensuring the requisite increase in visual aggression. Bridging the gap between the revamped Golf GTI and Golf R will be a new variant dubbed GTI TCR, which will form a halfway house between the two familiar Golf performance models. Where the new GTI caps power at 242bhp, the TCR will feed 296bhp from its EA888 engine to the front treads. The new Mk8 variant is expected to switch to a five-door configuration, and gain some aggressive new bodywork inspired by the race car with which it shares the badge. Other additions for the TCR include extra cooling, a sports exhaust and track-focused rubber. While the new-gen Golf R and TCR are a done deal, it’s the prospect of the long-rumoured Golf R ‘Plus’ that is most intriguing. This halo model, which could have as much as 402bhp and would act as a more affordable rival to the likes of the

Mercedes-AMG A45, has been discussed deep within Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg head office, with boss Herbert Diess reported to be a personal proponent of the project. However, while rumours of the hot

hatch halo have been circulating for months, the car is yet to get the crucial management sign-off. That means it’s not in the mid-term product plan and, even if given the green light, it won’t appear until at least 2023. Another marketing-friendly option could be a 2024 launch to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic GTI. Chassis tweaks would naturally run to stiffer suspension and, according to our spies, a wider track, something that would necessitate bespoke wheel arches to keep everything in check – and pump up the aesthetics. It would also create a distinct look from the GTI and R models, which would continue to account for the bulk of hot Golf sales. It’s understood that engineers have evaluated multiple drivetrain

options for getting the requisite power – with Mercedes-AMG’s 416bhp A45 one target mentioned – while meeting stringent 95g/km CO2 targets. Whatever happens, expect emissions as much as performance to steer the

agenda. There’s also the rather large hurdle of ensuring any top-shelf Golf arrives with a Volkswagen-friendly price tag. Sister brand Audi does a thoroughly reasonable RS3, so R Plus would logically either have to offer more or sell for less – likely the latter. Volkswagen executives initially considered employing Audi’s potent and characterful 394bhp five-cylinder turbo as the powerplant for a Pluspowered Golf, but that plan has been killed off. Instead, it would be up to the familiar 2.0-litre blown four-pot to carry the Golf to a new level of performance, but what form it takes has apparently not been decided. While a heftier turbo and strengthened internals could theoretically hit the 400bhp-plus target, another option understood to be on the table involves electrification. That would leave an electric motor to provide something

It makes sense given Volkswagen’s performance direction too. The recently unveiled Touareg R utilises the 456bhp plug-in hybrid drivetrain from Porsche’s Cayenne E-Hybrid.

group would need to utilise such a set-up to ensure its viability. There’s also the issue of weight. Throw in batteries and there’s the obvious issue of adding hundreds of kilograms to the car, which would trade off its agility. On the other hand, electric motors also allow different thinking on the drivetrain front. Rather than run driveshafts to the rear, Volkswagen could use the same approach as other all-wheeldrive hybrids – and the GTI Worthersee concept from 2017 – that leave the petrol engine powering the front axle while electric motors take care of the rear drive. Such a set-up would also help to overcome some of the weight disadvantage of carrying batteries and motors in addition to the ICE by eliminating diffs and driveshafts. There are also benefits with torque vectoring and being able to quickly switch drive between wheels and axles depending on the surface and situation. It’s thinking that is already deep in development elsewhere across Europe.

like an extra 70-plus brakehorsepower, possibly more – all of which would blend nicely with Volkswagen’s broader switch to electric propulsion through its ID sub-brand.

However, there are challenges for an R Plus elsewhere. Any such programme is unlikely to be for a single model, suggesting other vehicles within the

What approach VW will adopt remains to be seen, though it’s clear the brand isn’t taking losing its place at the top of the hot hatch hierarchy lying down. And the real winners in that scenario are us – car lovers looking for engaging daily drivers that can also lug the kids and dog about, without breaking the bank.

IN THIS MONTH 2005: London terrorist attacks On July 7, Four Islamic terrorists separately detonated three homemade bombs in quick succession aboard London Underground trains across the city and, later, a fourth on a doubledecker bus in Tavistock Square. The train bombings occurred on the Circle line near Aldgate and at Edgware Road, and on the Piccadilly line near Russell Square. Apart from the bombers, 52 UK residents (18 different nationalities) were killed and more than 700 were injured in the attacks, making it Britain’s deadliest terrorist incident since the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 near Lockerbie, Scotland, and England’s deadliest since World War II, as well as the country’s first Islamist suicide attack.

1954: Rationing ends in UK Fourteen years of food rationing in Britain ended at midnight on July 4, 1954 (nine years after the end of World War II), when restrictions on the sale and purchase of meat and bacon were lifted.

1997: Versace murdered On July 15, renowned Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace was shot on the steps of his Miami Beach mansion by Andrew Cunanan, a serial killer who had earlier murdered four other men. Cunanan committed suicide on a houseboat eight days after Versace’s murder.

2005

Cunanan was obsessed with the designer and often bragged about his close “friendship” with Versace, although this was symptomatic of Cunanan’s delusions of grandeur: he often falsely claimed to have met celebrities. However, FBI agents believe that Versace and Cunanan had previously met in San Francisco, although what their relationship entailed is still a mystery

1954 1996

Restrictions were gradually lifted three years after war had ended, starting with flour in 1948, followed by clothes in 1949, petrol in 1950 and butter in early 1954.

Called “the world’s most famous sheep”, Dolly died from a progressive lung disease five months before her seventh birthday. The disease was not considered related to her being a clone.

2005: Live 8 On July 2, a string of benefit concerts took place in the G8 states and in South Africa. They were timed to precede the G8 conference in Gleneagles. Run in support of the UK’s Make Poverty History campaign and the Global Call to Action Against Poverty, ten simultaneous concerts were held on July 2 and one on July 6. On July 7, the G8 leaders pledged to double 2004 levels of aid to poor nations from US$25 billion to US$50 billion by 2010.

38

On July 5, Dolly, a female domestic sheep, became the first mammal cloned from an adult somatic cell, using the process of nuclear transfer. Dolly was cloned by Keith Campbell, Ian Wilmut and colleagues at the Roslin Institute, University of Edinburgh. The cell used as the donor for the cloning of Dolly was taken from a mammary gland, and the production of a healthy clone therefore proved that a cell taken from a specific part of the body could recreate a whole individual.

Food rationing had begun on January 8, 1940, four months after the outbreak of war. Limits were imposed on the sale of bacon, butter and sugar. Then, on March 11, all meat was rationed.

More than 1,000 musicians - including Paul McCartney, Madonna, Stevie Wonder, Pink Floyd and Coldplay performed at the concerts, which were broadcast on 182 television networks and 2,000 radio networks.

1996: First animal cloning

1976: ‘Son of Sam’ killings On July 29, David Berkowitz, the socalled ‘Son of Sam’, pulled a gun from a paper bag and fired five shots at Donna Lauria and Jody Valenti of the Bronx while they are sitting in a car. Lauria died and Valenti was seriously wounded in the first in a series of shootings by the serial killer, who terrorised New York City over the course of the next year.

1976

After his eventual arrest in August, 1977, Berkowitz pleaded guilty to eight separate shooting attacks that began in New York City during the summer of 1976. He is currently serving six consecutive life sentences.

GARDENS ooking for a weekend retreat where you can sink a few beers and watch some footy in peace? Or has your holiday left you yearning for a tiki bar where you can lounge the summer evenings away, cocktail in hand?

L

A garden bar or shed pub is a fantastic feature, offering the escape of your local with all the comforts of home. Low maintenance and versatile, this focal point is perfect whether you want to entertain in style or simply relax in serenity.

Whatever the weather Garden bars come in all shapes and sizes to suit a wide range of needs and budgets. However, there’s one thing you can’t control, and that’s the weather. There isn’t much point building a kittedout cabana bar if you’ll be spending most of the year gazing wistfully through the rain spattered patio doors at it. Think very carefully about what you want from your bar, and about the limitations the local climate will have on that.

What type of garden bar to build? There’s a garden bar to suit every need! If you’re stuck for space, or are reluctant to put a permanent fixture in your garden, a fold away wall-mounted Murphy bar or portable drinks trolley is the ideal compromise. Putting one of these together is a quick and easy lazy

within a weekend. For a true haven that can be enjoyed all year round, a shed pub is the answer. Wow your friends with a fully equipped bar. Indulge your every whim, be it a modest pool table and dart board combo or a more adventurous Rovers Return replica. When it comes to designing your bar, the sky is the limit.

with bi-folding doors, which open out to the front of your bar to let the sunshine in. Another option would be to add an overhang to the exterior, meaning you can come out and sit in the shade as you quench your thirst.

If you’re looking for something with a little more substance, you could opt for a sheltered beach-style bar. These are brilliant for smaller gardens and look amazing on the corner of your patio or tucked away in an unused nook at the end of the lawn. A bar like this takes a good measure of planning and elbow grease. For support, you will need to dig a foundation, fill with hardcore and compact. The decking base goes on top of this, then the frame is built and the roof and sides added. That’s all before you even think about adding the actual bar and other decorative features. Don’t worry though, it’s a straightforward job once you have the planning right. Enlist the help of a friend and you’ll be rocking your tiki

The beauty of a shed pub is that you can sit back and relax with your drink even when it’s pouring rain outside. However, this also means that you are stuck indoors when weather is glorious, which goes against the entire nature of a garden bar. This can be counteracted

Building a shed pub is a long-term commitment. This is an ideal project for shed aficionados, something you can keep upgrading and adding to as time goes by. For an easier option, you could always buy a pre-built shed and fit the bar yourself. This leaves you with the control and freedom over the interior design, and you can get stuck straight in without the boring initial legwork. Whether you go for the basic option or decide to go the whole hog with shed pub, you are guaranteed that your bar will become the social hub of your garden. May you enjoy many years of shedded bliss. Cheers!

SEX AND SEXUALITY IN VICTORIAN BRITAIN AUTHOR: VIOLET FENN Peek beneath the bedsheets of nineteenthcentury Britain in this aectionate, informative and fascinating look at sex and sexuality during the reign of Queen Victoria. It examines the prevailing attitudes towards male and female sexual behaviour, and the ways in which these attitudes were often determined by those in positions of power and authority. It also explores our ancestors’ ingenious, surprising, bizarre and often entertaining solutions to the challenges associated with maintaining a healthy sex life. Did the people in Victorian times live up to their stereotypes when it came to sexual behaviour? This book will answer this question, as well as looking at fashion, food, science, art, medicine, magic, literature, love, politics, faith and superstition through a new lens, leaving the reader uplifted

and with a new regard for the ingenuity and character of our greatgreat-grandparents. About the Author VIOLET FENN has always been fascinated by human behaviour. She specialises in frank and straightforward investigations into the wilder areas of sexual practices and the changing cultural attitudes towards sex and mortality. She was once turned down for a job at an undertaker’s for being ‘too interested in death’. She lives in Shropshire with her children, a menagerie of pets and endless beautiful but pointless clutter. She ]rmly believes that black is the happiest colour and that there is no such thing as too much red lipstick. To ďŹ nd out more, visit sexdeathrocknroll.com
