Holiday review

Summer holidays on a shoestring
T
he cheapest holiday destination for 2018? According to the Post Office’s annual survey of on-the-ground costs, it’s offbeat Bulgaria.
After comparing prices in 42 destinations, for typical travel purchases such as drinks in local bars and restaurant meals, the Black Sea resort of Sunny Beach supplanted the Algarve as the top option for budget breaks. The total cost of the items came to just under £38, on average, in the Bulgarian summer favourite, around £5 less than its nearest rival, Tokyo. The Algarve, where the bill came to a little over £44, slipped to third overall, while Prague and Cape Town completed the top five. Propping up the table was Singapore, where the items were found to cost almost £154, on average, followed by Dubai, Oman, Barbados and Rio de Janeiro. The Post Office’s Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer, released every January, doesn’t take into account hotel and flight prices – and, of course, it is possible to find costly meals in Bulgaria and budget ones in Singapore. But it does offer some guidance to where British travellers will find their pound stretching furthest.
Prices have fallen sharply in the Caribbean since last year. Hoi An in Vietnam (down 21 per cent) and Cape Town (down 16 per cent) are among the other places where the pound is going further in 2018. While eight of the 10 cheapest destinations are found in Europe, budget travellers might consider steering clear of Italy, 23rd overall, and France, 30th overall. China, Chile and Australia also appear towards the lower end of the ranking.
Why go to Sunny Beach?
A fair question. Besides low prices, what can one expect from the Bulgarian Riviera? Is it worth the potential savings? “It’s cheap and cheerful, with some fairly rough-and-ready communist-era concrete constructions,” said Telegraph Travel’s Adrian Bridge, following a visit to the resort of Varna, just north of Sunny Beach. “But there are some nice cafés and restaurants. We drank a couple of beers (£1.30 for the two) and ordered fish fresh from the Black Sea. Over a shopska salad (tomatoes, cucumbers, olives and fetastyle cheese), I was introduced to the pleasures of rakia, a fruit-based schnapps.”
Overall, the picture is fairly positive for UK travellers in 2018 – compared with last year, at least. Sterling has strengthened against 70 per cent of the Post Office’s 40 best selling foreign currencies since January 2017, when it was still in the post-referendum doldrums, helping to decrease holiday costs in many destinations. The biggest falls were found in long-haul locations such as Dubai, where prices are down 36 per cent, and New Zealand (down 27 per cent). The Caribbean is offering far better value too, with a drop in prices reported in St Lucia, Antigua (both down 31 per cent), Jamaica (down 27 per cent) and the Dominican Republic (down 26 per cent).
Cheapest: Bulgaria (Sozopol pictured) 12

The cheapest (and costliest) destinations for 2018 - at a glance Varna’s other attractions include the beautiful Sea Gardens, modelled on the Baroque palace gardens of Schönbrunn and Belvedere in Vienna, the lavish Cathedral of the Assumption, an open-air theatre, an aquarium, a planetarium, a “bizarre” little naval museum, a wellpreserved old town, and, of course, the sea itself: “I took a dip and experienced the strange sweetness of the Black Sea,” recalled Bridge. “It has barely any salt.” He adds: “It’s still a working port and in addition to a sea of cranes I spot cargo ships. It lends the beach itself a certain hardness that may not appeal to all holidaymakers (most of whom anyway head further north to the purposebuilt resorts of Sunny Beach and Albena). But for an afternoon – or a day or two – it’s fun.” Robert Nurnden, meanwhile, a former resident of Bulgaria, recommends another Black Sea resort: Sozopol. “It manages to cater for the young, party-going set from Sofia as well as those seeking something more sedate,” he says. “The classy old town offers shoreline restaurants and bars where you can watch the sun slide down over Asia. To the south, miles of sandy beaches stretch as far as Turkey. To the north, Sunny Beach pulsates to the beat of 24-hour parties.”
How reliable is the study?
It has its drawbacks. For one thing, it does not take into account the cost of travel, only a handful of on-the-ground purchases, while cheap food is easy to find in just about any city on Earth (Singapore, for instance, the most expensive destination to feature, is renowned for its street food stalls, which will leave you satisfied for a few quid). However, it offers a fair guide as to the destinations to avoid if you want to keep costs down (Australia, Dubai and Antigua, for example), and those to consider (like Portugal, Turkey and Prague).

Hyundai’s new FCV takes off
W
hile the prospect of widespread adoption of FCVs (fuel cell vehicles fuelled by hydrogen) is some way off, Hyundai is pretty serious about being at the forefront when their time comes. Serious enough to have developed its second commercially available FCV, the Nexo, arriving in the UK later this year.
The Nexo none of the range anxiety associated with EVs: its vision of almost-silent, emissions-free future motoring comes with a 497-mile range (when measured in NEDC city mode), while a five-minute refuelling time means no hanging around for hours while it recharges.
Using hydrogen stored in three 52.2-litre tanks situated under the floor, the Nexo’s fuel cell stack combines it with air from its intakes and the resulting chemical reaction creates electricity that powers a motor driving the front wheels.
As a car with both eyes fixed on the future, the Nexo is also packed it with some of the latest semi-autonomous safety features, which includes self-steering lane following assist that keeps the car in the centre of the lane, without the need for humans to guide it. The car is meant to alert you 10 seconds after you take your hands off the wheel, but our test car managed to take care of all the steering for almost six minutes before it remembered that a human was supposed to be doing most of the work.
With energy also coming from regenerative braking, the driver has 181bhp at his disposal, which provides a 0-62mph acceleration time of 9.2 seconds. The Nexo doesn’t perhaps have the instant kick from a standing start that you find with a battery-powered EV, but it’s far from lacking in usable performance: the majority of our test drive was in highway conditions, and it cruised and overtook with alacrity. It takes only five minutes to fill the Nexo’s three 52.2-litre tanks with hydrogen, giving a claimed range of 497 miles It was pretty darn quiet, too, with just a smidgeon of road and wind noise to contend with. And, as if to underline its clean-driving credentials even further, the Nexo also purifies the air around it as it drives, filtering out 99.9 per cent of the particulates from what it sucks in.
18
Admittedly, the UK’s hydrogen refuelling infrastructure currently leaves a lot to be desired (fewer than 20 publicly accessible pumps), but if you’re based in or around London – or a couple of other H2 outposts, such as Swindon or Sheffield – it might just work.
Throw in a highway driving assist feature that is a combination of adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist and city braking, and this is one very accomplished and self-sufficient car. One advantage that the Nexo has over the Mirai and Clarity is that Hyundai has clad its FCV in the shape of an SUV, rather than a saloon, which will have greater appeal to consumers. Indeed, the exterior design has a lot going for it, with its sleek, unfussy, surfaces, wide grille, gently raked roof and integrated flush door handles for extra slipperyness.

The light, spacious interior features two large touchscreens, along with leather and (mostly) tactile plastics.
batteries: there’s plenty of room in the rear for adults and even 839 litres of luggage capacity.
Detail is also important in the Nexo’s interior, where we’re left in no doubt that this a car that is focused on the future, thanks to two touchscreens, totalling 12.3 inches in size, offering drivers a wealth of information – including a view from wing mirror-mounted rear-view cameras, showing what’s in the Nexo’s blindspot, as soon as the driver indicates. It’s a really neat feature that works superbly and genuinely enhances safety.
The Nexo has a tall SUV body, making it more attractive than saloon rivals in today’s SUV-obsessed market There’s nothing innovative about the Nexo’s driving dynamics, sadly, but the handling is competent, while the ride coped well with the biggest test we encountered, motorway expansion joints.
Hyundai has also upped its game in its use of cabin materials, employing leather and (mostly) tactile soft-touch plastics, but less convincing is the switchgear in the centre console: there are way too many buttons and knobs and the quality isn’t great. Eighties hi-fi systems spring to mind. The interior is surprisingly spacious, though, thanks to the
The Nexo’s final price is yet to be determined, but we expect something in the region of the Mirai’s £66,000. That’s premium-brand money and many consumers will balk at paying that for a badge still gaining acceptance. But this is a car that is ahead of its time, by some way, both in terms of clean motoring and self-driving technology. It might be gambling on the future, but it will consign concerns over hydrogen firmly to the past.
