MOTORING REVIEW
JUNE
Toyota C-HR (2017) review by CJ Hubbard
Clap eyes on the new Toyota C-HR for the first time, and you’ve got to think: that’s it – Toyota’s had enough. Enough of being ‘the dull one’ of the group, enough of being the one everyone else expects to drive them home at the end of the night, the one who turns up on time, unflinchingly exact, unremittingly reliable, slightly badly dressed...Ok, so the reliability thing will probably continue – after all, who wants to be a jerk? – but clearly a little more excitement and a frisson of rebellion is on the cards from now on. How else do you explain the world’s most pre-eminent(ly sensible) car maker so completely missing the conventional brief with its oh-so-late entry into the family crossover segment. It’s like someone sent the un-edited C-HR proof to the 3D printer, and Toyota’s ended up accidentally putting a concept car into production. My, my – the Toyota C-HR looks… wild There’s a little too much Honda Civic in the back end for our tastes, and hell yes, the overall design is surely going to date like carrot-cut trousers, but park the C-HR next to a Qashqai and it's clear who’s the rock and roller among the parents outside playschool. And though Toyota is rather hoping trendy urbanites will represent the bulk of buyers, despite that sloping roofline there is still a reasonable amount of room in the back. What there isn’t, however, is much daylight, since the rear pillar is so big a grown adult can hide behind it like a VIP in the back of a Rolls-Royce Phantom. The kids, we’re strongly suspecting, will not like. The interior presents other challenges up front. Infotainment screens that stand proud of the dashboard
seem to inspire vehement dislike from certain quarters, and the C-HR’s is asymmetrical. This decision almost out-bolds the exterior – especially with the electric blue trim surround that comes as standard on the top spec Dynamic model – and again appears to come directly from the original concept sketches. It’s part of a wider ‘layered effect’ to the dash design, starting with the leatherette finisher on the top in fancier models and proceeding through strata of gradually decreasing quality as it heads towards the footwells. These touches, and the diamond-pattern doorcards, don’t quite manage to distract you from the swathes of dull black plastic, but the C-HR is functional inside as well as eye-catching, with all the major points of interaction clearly angled towards the driver. The diamond motif – taken from the complex faceted body panel creases – is repeated among the button clusters and hollowed-out areas of the headlining. Is this the motoring equivalent of a dull personality dying their hair pink? This is the really extraordinary bit: Toyota has built a regular car that’s good to drive. The signs were there in the fourth generation Prius, which left Chris Chilton perplexed by handling prowess. The C-HR uses the same Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform – it’s the GA-C variant, hardcore chassis-code fans – which is both usefully rigid and, thanks to some innovative suspension mounting points and a low-slung drivetrain, impressively vertically challenged when it comes to centre of gravity. Especially for a crossover. Compared with the Prius, the C-HR has a slightly shorter wheelbase and a specific subframe to optimise the angles for the double-wishbone rear suspension. This also features a ball-joint connection for the lower arms in place of the Prius’s conventional bushing, improving accuracy and response. So it goes round corners? Remarkably, accuracy and response are two words appropriate to the overall handling, too. The C-HR was
designed and engineered specifically for Europe; we hear this a lot these days, but during the launch event chief engineer Hiroyuki Koba and his team were at pains to express just how much time they’d spent trying to understand European driving habits and how they differ to Japanese tastes – indeed, the C-HR’s chassis has been in development since 2011, and in that time it’s been in the UK and raced (not just tested) on the Nurburgring. For a particularly nerdy example, take the shock absorbers, which are unusually sourced from European maker Sachs rather than a Japanese supplier – precisely because the Sachs dampers deliver the more progressive, accurate response Koba-san was striving for. In practice this means they smoothly muffle rough surfaces while providing consistent, progressive body control in the corners; the C-HR does not lurch, it just swiftly transitions from flat to turning with poise. No doubt the chunky anti-roll bars help with this composure – and you can occasional detect their presence in a minor amount of lateral chop that occurs on bumpy straights – but with the electric power steering successfully avoiding cloying centre-line slop, this is an engaging device that punts round twisty roads and slices through city traffic rather nicely. Toyota says it was bench-
marked against hatchbacks, not crossovers; we believe it. Which engine is best? If you want a diesel, tough luck. There isn’t one, and won’t be. Instead the C-HR comes with the latest Prius hybrid system – combining a 1.8-litre petrol and an electric motor to the tune of 120bhp – or a 114bhp 1.2 turbo that’s got such clever variable valve timing it can swap between Otto and Atkinson injection cycles on the fly. The hybrid’s ok, though as per usual the CVT auto diminishes the experience, heavy-footed moments exhibiting a curiously ghostly howl. It’s also 60kg heavier than the turbo, so doesn’t quite have the same sharpness of chassis.

FATHERS DAY GIFT Father’s Day is just around the corner, but if you still haven’t picked out a cool gift, it might be time to skip the store-bought stuff like ties or golf clubs and make your dad something truly special from the heart this year. Dads aren’t the easiest to shop for, which is why homemade gifts will really surprise him. It will be a gift he will remember and cherish for years to come. Using just a wooden picture frame, old Scrabble letters, and a hot-glue gun, I was able to create this gift in under 10 minutes. The final product would be the perfect addition for a home office, a living room, or a baby’s nursery. It’s really an incredibly thoughtful last-minute Father’s Day gift that even the kids can help make. It’s these simple gifts that come from the heart that can always bring a smile to Dad’s face.
Materials: Picture frame Scrabble letters Hot-glue gun

No matter what interests your dad has, he will be CM overjoyed with this special gift. Plus, it feels so good to skip the store-bought stuff and make something MY completely unique and heartfelt. CY This is such a fun and thoughtful way to display photos in my home. (And don’t limit yourself to onlyCMY doing this craft on Father’s Day. This could be perfect K for birthdays, holidays, baby showers, and more. The possibilities are truly endless, so get creative!)
1. Pick out the letters from the Scrabble bag, so you'll be able to spell out the words 'Daddy' and Son or 'Daughter.' 2. Next, place your letters down on the picture frame first, so you can get the right spacing you desire. For added help, I added an 'X' in pencil under each letter, so I knew right where to put my dab of hot glue. 3. Begin hot-gluing each letter to the picture frame. 4. Let dry. Be sure to stand your picture frame upright, just to ensure all the letters are securely glued to the frame. Reapply glue, if needed.
5. Insert your favorite photo, and you're done!
What a wonderful gift to give Dad on Father’s Day!

Holiday Review JUNE
Malta
7,000 years of history Malta’s reputation in Britain has long been about package deals for sun and sea - and, as you will see below, sun and sea are very good reasons to go to Malta. But they are not the only reasons. Malta has so much more to offer. It has, in fact, the greatest concentration of historic sites of any country. Malta’s strategic position in the middle of the Mediterranean has made it highly desirable to all the trading and warring nations of Europe and North Africa from the Phoenicians and Romans to Napoleon and the British. Traces of each remain - from Roman catacombs to wonderfully incongruous British red letter boxes. The oldest sophisticated stone buildings in the world Yes, really. Malta is home to prehistoric temples built between 3600 and 2500BC. They are older than the Great Pyramids; older even than the famous standing stones at Stonehenge - and a lot more sophisticated. Malta’s temples are no stone circles: they are buildings as we know them with rooms, corridors, stairs, monumental doorways, and decorative carvings. The magical alleys of Mdina The layout of Mdina hasn’t changed since medieval times. Narrow alleys wind between limestone palazzos encircled by massive fortified walls. This was the capital of Malta from at least Roman times until the arrival of the Knights of St John in 1530. Left behind in history, it is a magical place to wander and full of interesting sights and good restaurants. Valletta and the ‘Knights of Malta’ Malta’s diminutive capital Valletta is still very recognisably the city built by the Knights of St John Hospitaller. Surrounded on three sides by water and on all four by
huge fortifications, it is also graced with the Knights’ high Baroque architecture in warm local sandstone, and Malta’s characteristic colourful wooden gallariji (balconies) overhanging the narrow streets. There are some great museums and restaurants too. The Grand Harbour and the George Cross Beneath Valletta lies the impressive Grand Harbour and a boat trip around it should not be missed. Home from home for the Royal Navy throughout the 19th century and much of the 20th century, the harbour played a key role in the Second World War when the people of Malta showed such fortitude under attack from the Fascist powers that King George VI awarded the entire population the George Cross. Several Second World War sights are open to visitors. Sun On average the sun shines 300 days a year in Malta. I have sunbathed on a Maltese beach on November 1 and been too hot in a T-shirt in December, although it is of course in the summer that sun and warmth are guaranteed. at my desk looking out at a grey UK day, the sun seems pretty good reason to go to Malta, but it is by no the only one. ...and sea Malta has no shortage of coast and the water is clear as crystal and cleaner than most of the Med; wonderful for swimming, snorkelling and diving. More than 100 dive sites, many accessible from the shore, attract some 50,000 a year to Malta - and especially to Gozo. Un-British food Once under the culinary joke of Great Britain, Malta has thankfully grown out of this particular colonial legacy and there are now many excellent restaurants serving
16
delicious traditional and modern Maltese and Mediterranean food - some in interesting historic locations. Gozo, isle of Calypso The main island of Malta is quite built up. It is a great place to combine sightseeing, sun and swimming, but to fully relax, the smaller neighbouring island of Gozo is the place to be. Reputed to be the island on which Homer had Odysseus held spellbound by the sea nymph Calyspo, it feels a world apart: the pace is slower, the landscape more unspoilt, the people even friendlier. It’s so easy Finally, there is a practical reason for going to Malta it is incredibly easy! English is spoken everywhere, some Maltese even use it as their first language; the currency is the euro; there are no significant health issues; it is only three hours flying time from the UK (less from southern Europe) and there are plenty of low-cost as well as scheduled flights from a variety of UK and European airports.

Food Review
by Inside Flintshire Magazine 01978 790714
We called in the Crown Hotel on the way back from a weekend away in Aberystwyth. It was a red hot Sunday afternoon so we were keen to find somewhere where we could enjoy a Sunday roast in the sunshine so a beer garden was a must! We came across the crown which is a 400 year old traditional Welsh country inn it is situated at the traffic lights on the A529 Wrexham/Ruthin and the A5105 Chester/Corwen close to Llandegla. The Crown hotel is a gateway to the magnificent Clwyd valley and its spectacular countryside. The pub is steeped in history it was one of 16 inns at Llandegla which once catered for the drovers who stopped the night here while driving livestock from Wales to England. Droving had died out by about 1870, replaced by railways. Now only two of the old inns are still in use as pubs, and this is one of them. The pub certainly has the wow factor with low wood beams to the traditional stone walls but with the quirky touches the current owners have made it feels like an enchanted garden with the abundance of twinkling fairy lights and candles on the tables it really is a beautiful pub not at all what we expected from the outside. We were immediately made to feel like family friends and assured that dogs were more than welcome which was nice. We asked to be seated in the beer garden as it was such a beautiful day and we were shown to a courtyard at the rear which was an absolute sun trap. Our waitress soon returned with menus and refreshments for our dog, they brought out ice cold water and a bowl of dog biscuits much to her satisfaction. We were pleased to see that the Sunday lunch menu with not 24
just traditional roast dinners but also favourites like fish and chips, Cajun chicken and Curry and rice and at £13.95 for three courses it was good value. We both decided on Tempura Prawns for our starters these came presented on a bed of crisp salad with a drizzle of sweet chilli sauce the prawns were coated in a delicious crispy Tempura batter. The dish was light, fresh and simple but delicious. For our main course we both decided on a traditional Sunday lunch Reg opted for Roast Beef and Yorkshire pudding and I decided on Roast Lamb and Yorkshire pudding. Both of the lunches looked amazing when they arrived they were presented really well the first thing we noticed was the huge homemade Yorkshire puddings, mounds of creamy mash ,crispy roast potatoes and chunky cut meat, no wafer thin pre cut catering meat in sight! They then topped it off by bringing out a platter of perfectly cooked fresh vegetables with the addition of the most tasty sauted red cabbage I had ever tasted and delicious creamy cauliflower cheese which was smothered in a rich tasty wholegrain mustard cheese sauce. We were really impressed with everything we had tasted the quality of the ingredients and the expertise of the chef had made a first class Sunday lunch, it was an added bonus that the service was excellent and the chef actually took the time to come outside and ask us if we had enjoyed our meals. Unfortunately I think the heat and the portion size got the better of us, we couldn’t manage a dessert, although we both agreed it gives us a reason to go back and sit inside amongst the twinkling fairy lights and enjoy more wonderful home cooked food in a real gem of a country pub.

Puppies Puppy Diaries
A new puppy can make a fantastic pet. They have their own unique personalities and are famously loyal. If raised properly you’ll have a friend for life, and, more importantly a new member of the family! Buying and owning a dog can bring many rewards into your life, but caring for and playing with one can be very time consuming. If you are not 100% sure that you or your children will be able to give your pet the attention that it needs then please think twice. Are you puppy prepared? Is your home suitable for a puppy? It needs space to move about, local exercise areas or parks, and secure safe areas for play. Are you able to spend time playing with and walking your puppy? If you will be out of the house for long periods of time nearly every day, your puppy may become lonely and mischievous. Dogs need human companionship too. Regular walks are essential for your dog’s continuing health, and they’ll help to keep you fit too! Can you afford a puppy? Not only do you have to set aside around £30 a month for food etc., there’s also bedding, training aids, flea and worm controls as well as kennel fees to account for throughout the year! Vet’s bills can easily exceed £100 in times of trouble, and even regular health checks and vaccinations soon add up. Feeding Time Your puppy should be fed a specific ‘Puppy’ or ‘Growth’ life stage food for the first 1-2 years of its life depending on its adult size. These types of foods will have been specially formulated by leading
26
nutritionists to benefit every aspect of your growing puppy. Diets without such modifications can lead to poor bone development, bad teeth and stunted growth! Feeding a high quality food is essential for a growing puppy, but it doesn’t have to cost a fortune feeding a higher quality diet can actually save you money! Depending on the recommended daily feeding quantity for your puppy, divide the amount into several small meals throughout the day: • Up to 12 weeks – 4 small equal meals. • Up to 6 months – 3 meals – lunch smaller. • Over 6 months – 2 meals – larger in the morning. Always supply plenty of fresh drinking water. Purchase animal-safe treats only, especially avoid feeding human chocolate as this can be toxic to dogs. Try treating with premium treats that do not contain excess sugar rather than human food or sweets.
Worming & Flea Control It would be impossible to isolate your puppy from the risk of getting fleas. If you wait until you see the fleas it is likely that your puppy (and your house) has lots of them. There are spot ons and tablets that prevent and kill fleas, just make sure you pick one that’s suitable for your puppy’s age. Treat your house at the same time and your home and your puppy will be flea free.
Make sure you buy toys that are suitable for your puppies age and chewing power, some toys are also not suitable for your puppy to use when unattended. Why not send us a picture of your puppy to appear in Inside lincs magazine.
Playtime & Toys These should be used for entertainment and rewards. A puppy will respond well to you if you have its favourite toy in your hand. Playtime is an ideal opportunity to teach your puppy the basic commands you wish to use – but always make it short and enjoyable or your puppy will lose interest very quickly.

Brilliant budget garden ideas that will boost your outdoor space without breaking the bank!
Is your garden looking a little lacklustre and in need of more than a little TLC? Well, there’s no time like the present to tackle your outdoor space. If your garden fencing is in need of repairing or painting, or your garden edging seems overly messy it can impact upon the whole of your backyard space. Breathing new life into your back garden (or front garden, for that matter) doesn’t always require a landscape gardener. There are plenty of simple updates that can be achieved on a budget, and which make a huge difference to the appearance of your outdoor space. Whether it’s a small garden, a patio or a balcony garden, there are plenty of budget-conscious design ideas (or even DIY tricks) to boost your space. From simple garden lighting to inexpensive outdoor furniture ideas, pretty planting to statement outdoor styling for summer garden parties, there are a multitude of smart ways to make your garden great without breaking the bank. All it takes is a little planning and a few clever tricks, and you can turn any garden into a tranquil haven, country retreat or al fresco dining area – even on the smallest budget, as these ten garden ideas show.
Opt for a one-colour wonder
In a balcony garden, don’t overcomplicate things; choose slender planters in a rich, summery colour and match your furniture. A lick of metal paint can update an old iron garden chair quite easily and is a cheap update, too. This beautiful blue has a real Mediterranean feel and, together with the slender lines of the plant pots and the chair, the small garden area feels comfortable rather than cluttered.
Boost a bench with colourful cushions
Keep a feeling of warmth, even in a shady corner with bright cushions and matching planting. Give your bench a coat of weatherproof wood paint, and (once dry) layer it up with cushions for a modern, budget conscious look. A crisp white base cushion looks fresh when combined with hot pink striped designs that match the summer blooms that have been planted nearby. A wooden-framed lantern makes the ideal finishing touch… and, because it lights the area at night, it means you can get your money’s worth!
Create a cute bird feeder
It’s not always big things that change the feel of a garden – it can simply amount to the sounds you hear outside. Boost your garden’s atmosphere by encouraging birds in with a DIY bird feeder; their song will instantly create a more positive feel. This simple design above only requires a cup and saucer and some superglue. Talk about budget garden updates!
Create a mini vegetable garden
If you want to make your garden a bit more about sustainability, but don’t really have space (or the funds) to plant a full-scale veggie patch, why not try a neat vegetable trug instead? Give it a little personalised paint job, plant out your vegetables and see your garden discover a whole new lease of life all year round.

June Summer arrives
June 21 is the longest day of the year, and the extra light and warmth encourages the garden to put on an exuberant burst of growth. But this extra light and warmth also means weeds will sprout up from seemingly nowhere. Keep on top of them by hoeing regularly in dry conditions.
Flowers
Sowing and planting Plant out summer bedding and seed-raised plants, if not already done so. Make sure they are well watered in and keep moist during dry weather. Plant out cannas and dahlias once danger of frost has passed. Gaps in herbaceous borders are best filled with annual bedding at this stage in the season. One exception is anemones (e.g. Anemone coronaria), which take about three months to flower after planting. The rhizomes are best planted now, after an overnight soaking, 5cm (2in) deep in a suitably moist but freedraining soil or compost with lots of added leaf mould or organic matter. It is not too late to direct sow a few fast growing, lateflowering hardy annuals such as Calendula, Godetia and Clarkia.
Cutting back, pruning and dividing
Spreading and trailing plants, can become tatty and patchy. Trimming them back after flowering encourages fresh growth and new flowers. Cut back dead bulb foliage if not done already. It is important to wait until the foliage dies down naturally, as cutting back too early can lead to blindness next year. Cutting back clumps of spring-flowering perennials can encourage a fresh flush of foliage. Pinch out the leading shoots on plants such as Chrysanthemum and Helianthus to encourage bushy plants. However, if tall thin sprays are preferred, they can be left un-pinched, perhaps removing a few buds (known as ‘disbudding’) to encourage larger blooms. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of bulbs after they have finished flowering.
Pest and disease watch
Inspect lilies for the scarlet lily beetle whose larvae can strip plants in days. Vine weevil larvae can be a serious pest of containerised plants, and become active this month. There are various chemical and biological controls available. Aphids multiply rapidly in summer. Remove early infestations by hand to prevent the problem getting out of control. Aphids can transmit viruses, as can other sap-sucking insects. Continue to protect lily, delphiniums, hostas and other susceptible plants from slugs and snails. Hellebores can develop hellebore leaf spot on old leaves.
General maintenance
Hoe borders to prevent annual and perennial weeds from spreading and seeding themselves. Keep tubs, hanging baskets and alpine troughs well watered. Use collected rainwater, or recycled grey water wherever possible.
Propagation
Perennials that are showing new shoots from the crown can still be propagated via basal stem cuttings. Take cuttings from garden pinks (Dianthus). They can be pulled off the parent plant by pulling with thumb and forefinger while holding a suitable non-flowering shoot four pairs of leaves from the tip. Treat as softwood cuttings.
46 20
Tubs can be planted up with summer bedding if not done already.
