six minutes to offer fine views and, usually, some of the Rock’s famous wild monkeys.

ibraltar’s majestic rocky outline is one of the great sights of the Mediterranean, with a history to match, embracing early Neanderthal discoveries and many monuments to its pivotal military heritage. Its immense heights, accessed by cable car, offer glorious views and nature walks, with plenty of other sightseeing options, beaches and excursions on land and sea.

This is something you can do under your own steam, but be sure to buy a ticket online to avoid in part the long queues when cruise ships are in port. Note you will still need to exchange your e-ticket at the base station. From the top station you can walk half a mile (800m) downhill to see St Michael’s Cave) by way of the Skywalk, a glass-surfaced platform opened in 2018. The site’s ticket includes several other attractions that can be accessed on foot by road or path from the top station, including the Upper Rock Nature Reserve and O’Hara’s Battery.

What to see and do Gibraltar has enough to keep you occupied all day, but you could spend three to six hours seeing the highlights - on a tour or on your own - and devote the rest of your stay to the beach, shopping or a dolphin-watching boat trip. Alternatively, devote the whole day to trips to Spain or even Morocco. The official tourist board website has useful ideas, links and further information, especially on the confusing array of tickets required for combinations of sights.

Alternatively, continue on foot just over a mile (2km) to another of the Territory’s key sights, the Great Siege Tunnels, which you can also access from the top station if you don’t want to see the Cave. Visit walkgibraltar.com for excellent guided walks in the area. Plenty of other tours are available if you don’t want to explore independently, and can save time on a short stay. Typically these last 90 minutes, three hours or six hours, with similar highlights whether you choose the popular official taxi tours or the more popular Gibraltar Rock Tours.

Gibraltar’s most popular sightseeing trip is the cable car from the old town, which climbs 1350ft (412m) in

superb birdlife, especially migrating birds: contact Avian Tours for details of day excursions.

It is possible to join excursions to destinations farther afield, but check timings and days of operation: some tours require 10 hours or more and operate only one or two days a week. Parody Tours is typical, with excursions that include Tangiers (from £85 per person), Jerez (£70), Ronda (£70) and elsewhere. Gibraltar has a choice of beaches, mostly on the east coast, for which you will need to use a bus or take a taxi. For sand, visit Sandy Bay or larger Eastern Bay (buses # 4 or 8 to Both Worlds stop): the latter is the only beach unaffected by afternoon shadow cast by the Rock. Camp Bay is pebbly, but charming, with two swimming pools and plenty of facilities: take buses #4 or 9 to Rosia. Catalan Bay has rock pools, facilities and a family-friendly atmosphere. Gibraltar is rich in natural history, with

Another half mile (800m) beyond the Cave is the Apes’ Den, home to the bulk of Gibraltar’s monkeys. Here you can catch the cable car down from the mid-station, but, vitally, not between April and October, when it doesn’t stop here.

What can I do in four hours or less?

What can I do in eight hours or less?

Dolphin-spotting tours with two similar operators are also popular and offer dramatic views of the Rock from the water: Dolphin Safari tours last between one and two hours with a claimed 99 per cent chance of a sighting (£25 per person).

Eating and drinking UK visitors will find plenty of familiar “pub-grub” dishes, especially in the obvious areas frequented by visitors. Explore side streets and the marina and waterfront for smaller, more local bars and cafés serving traditional Spanish tapas or local specialities such as the Italian-influenced rosto (pasta with a tomato, meat and vegetable sauce); fideos al horno (a baked pasta and meat dish); calentita (a pizza or pancake-like dish made of chick-pea flour); the similar, polenta-like panissa (cut into strips and fried); pinchitas

Local craft specialities include silverware and textiles, notably the Spanish shawls in lace and silk known as mantillas, along with Gibraltar Crystal glass – this factory and shop features a free exhibition and glassblowing demonstrations. Gibraltar Arts and Crafts in the central Casemates Square makes a good one-stop shop for attractive local gifts. Close to the same square is the town market, a busy focus of territory life since 1929.

Mercedes-Benz V-class Marco Polo: Hotel-like Merc comfort ntil 2017 Volkswagen had the OEM glampervan market all to itself in the UK with its long-running California, but that year saw Mercedes-Benz finally come around to offering its V-Class Marco Polo to wellheeled outdoorsy types. Since then, the allure of the three-pointed star has ensured a small-but-lucrative trickle of customers has plumped for one Merc’s compact motorhomes, with its appeal broadened further by the arrival of the less-costly Horizon version, without fitted kitchen and other niceties.

Design The Marco Polo has undergone one of the mildest facelifts in automotive history - think of it more as though it’s been using anti-wrinkle cream rather than going under the surgeon’s knife. There are differences, though, but admittedly they’re unlikely to catch the eye of anyone but a Benz -spotter.

Depending on how much you spend on extras there are some new colours and different alloy wheel designs.

Interior

Motoring Sport models have a much larger lower grille in the front bumper, while the sportier (yes, sportier than Sport itself) AMG Line has chrome-look pins on its spangly new grille. Other Mercs have sported (sorry) this look for a while, so in essence it’s merely bringing the Marco Polo – and its V-Class MPV sibling – into line. You can also spec intelligent-beam LED headlamps for the first time on this model, which cutout the brighter light to avoid getting on the wick of other road users.

As with the outside, there are a handful of differences, including turbine-style airvents as per the E-Class, different trim appliques for the dashboard and door panels and… that’s about it. Prices have yet to be confirmed for UKmarket Marco Polos, but options will include an upgraded central multimedia screen and a second screen within the instrument binnacle to replace the conventional gaugesl.

Performance Starting-up a Marco Polo no longer sounds like you’re cranking an old Routemaster London bus into life on a cold Monday morning. Gone is the venerable old 2.1-litre gruffmatic noisily going about its business - instead is the well-regarded 1950cc OM654 diesel that’s gradually being introduced across Mercedes’ car range. Two versions are offered for British buyers: the 161bhp V220d and the punchier 236bhp V300d.

FATHER’S DAY

If you’ve driven an earlier Marco Polo then you’ll be immediately struck by how quiet the new motor is - we’ve sampled the V300d so far and were struck by the refinement both at cruising speeds and under hard acceleration. Despite producing 500Nm of torque from 1600rpm its urgency is very easy to modulate, making it a doddle to ease slowly around town - or camp sites - yet briskly get up to motorway speeds. Aiding the hushed progress is Merc’s 9G-Tronic automatic transmission, which replaces the older sevenspeeder. For the most part its satisfyingly slick, progressing through its ratios without a hint of transmission shunt.

As a home from home? At the Marco Polo’s business end, it’s a case of as you were, which I no bad thing in most respects. Sure, it’s a tad snug for four, and if you spec the optional fifth seat you’ll need to find somewhere to store it before you convert the rear bench into a bed, but the built-in units, blinds and fold-out table all feel of good quality. It’s all the work of Westfalia, a firm that’s been in the camper van conversion business (whispers, starting with VWs) for over four decades, so it should be decent. Remember that like the California, the Marco Polo’s sole access door to the rear compartment - as well as its awning - are located on the right-hand side of the vehicle.

Where the Mercedes makes the most sense is if you’re going to be taking it to various corners of the country or wider continent with great regularity, combining much of the freedom of camping with a degree of hotel-like comfort. So, this or a California? Both do a great job, but the Mercedes feels that little bit more upmarket and isn’t bound by the Dub Scene like the VW is - by comparison, the Marco Polo’s a virtue of discretion and perhaps the better for it.

Right-hand drive Marco Polos remain rear-wheel drive, with no 4Matic option for the UK.

Driveability More good news: even if you’ve not driven something this size before, there’s little to be daunted about. The controls are light, all-round visibility is excellent - even without the 360-degree camera system - and you’re sat high with a commanding view of the road ahead, over the top of many SUVs, in fact. What it’s not is exciting to throw around through a series of sweeping bends. Doing so with cupboards full of crockery isn’t wise anyway, but while it has sufficient traction to maintain tight lines through corners, you’re aware of its desire to lean over as you do so.

Specifications

Verdict You could live with a V-Class Marco Polo as your daily driver, but doing so would be a compromise, as you’d be constantly hauling around a lot of kit that you’ll likely only use a few weekends a year at most. It’s an expensive toy in those instances.

The best smart home gadgets

Gadgets that help you run your home by using your voice rather than walking over to your wall light, thermostat or hi-fi are becoming increasingly common. They vary from security cameras to smart lights, connected speakers to watering devices for your plants. Each of the devices here has its own smartphone app so you can control it remotely. Most work with any smartphone using their dedicated apps, but some, Eve products for instance, only work with Apple gadgets. For the best results, it’s worth having one of the systems that can control the gadgets directly. Apple, Google and Amazon have smart speakers which can hear you across the room and can be controlled by voice.

Eve Aqua: £89.95 Compatible systems: Apple Watering the garden, especially if you have plants in pots and certainly during the hot summer, is crucial. The handsomely built Eve Aqua attaches between the garden tap and hose. You can set it to come on at regular intervals (two minutes four times a day, say) for the best effect. It monitors the amount of water used, too. Name the Eve Aqua as you like, and control it by saying: “Hey, Siri, turn on the sprinkler,” for instance. If you have an iPad set up as a home hub, or an Apple TV or HomePod, you can control it remotely from your iPhone.

Nest Thermostat: £219 Compatible systems: Amazon, Google Nest’s first product, the learning thermostat, looks sensational and works like a dream. Twist the dial to turn the heating up or down and click the screen to adjust settings. Or do it all from the iPhone or Android app. If you have Alexa or Google, you can tell it what to do from there, too. It connects to your boiler, for instance, and controls heating and hot water.

30

Philips Hue Starter Kit: £169.99 Compatible systems: Amazon, Apple, Google Philips was the first company to create smart lighting and remains at the forefront of the technology. A starter kit gives you a bridge unit that connects to your router and three bulbs which are white only or have white and millions of colours. You can set schedules or turn the lights up gently in the morning to wake up to a sunrise effect, for instance.

Ring Video Doorbell 2: £179 Compatible systems: Amazon The video bell attaches to your door and when the button is pressed it can trigger your existing doorbell or link wirelessly to the Ring Chime bell inside the house. When someone rings the bell, it notifies your phone instantly, and a speaker and microphone mean you can speak to whoever’s there directly. A video recording plan is available which stores video recordings for up to 60 days (£2.50 a month).

Nokia Body Cardio bathroom scales: £79.95 Compatible systems: Amazon, Apple, Google Each time you weigh yourself, these scales tell you your weight, body water content, fat content and heart rate. Then, it saves every measurement to the Nokia Health app on your phone or online so you can monitor your weight gain or loss over a period. They’re also are smart enough to know who’s standing on them just from the weight, so several members of a family can use them.

3 When the pastry case has rested, place a sheet of baking parchment into it and half-fill with

4 Remove the baking parchment and baking beans and return the pastry case to the oven for a further 4-5 minutes, or until pale golden-brown. 5 Spread the raspberry jam onto the pastry base in an even layer. Sprinkle over the three tablespoons of nontoasted desiccated coconut and half of the fresh raspberries. Set the pastry base aside. 6 Bring the milk, vanilla pod and vanilla seeds to the boil in a pan, then reduce the heat to a simmer and simmer for 1-2 minutes. Remove the vanilla pod (it can be cleaned thoroughly and reused in another recipe). 7 In a bowl, beat together the egg yolks and sugar until well combined.

8 Pour the hot milk and vanilla mixture over the egg and sugar mixture, whisking continuously, until the mixture is smooth and well combined. Return the mixture to the pan over a medium heat. Whisk in the cornflour, a tablespoon at a time, until well combined, then heat, stirring continuously until the mixture is thick enough to coat the back of the spoon. 9 Transfer the custard mixture to a clean bowl and dust with the icing sugar (this prevents a skin forming on the surface of the custard). Set aside to cool in the fridge for 30 minutes. 10 Whisk the whipped double cream into the chilled custard mixture until well combined.

11 Spoon the custard and cream mixture into the pastry case in an even layer. Sprinkle over the remaining fresh raspberries. To serve, sprinkle over the toasted coconut. Serve immediately.

Ingredients ● Butter, for greasing ● 500g/1lb 2oz ready-made shortcrust pastry ● plain flour, for dusting ● 200g/7oz raspberry jam ● 3 tbsp desiccated coconut, plus 3 tbsp desiccated coconut, toasted in a dry frying pan until golden-brown, to serve ● 300g/11oz fresh raspberries ● 500ml/17fl oz full-fat milk ● 1 vanilla pod, split, seeds scraped out with a knife ● 5 free-range egg yolks ● 200g marshmallows ● 125g/4½oz caster sugar ● 4 heaped tbsp cornflour ● 2 tbsp icing sugar, for dusting ● 4 shredded wheat biscuits, crushed ● 400ml/14floz double cream, whipped until soft peaks form when the whisk is removed

How to add value to your home Whether you’ve just moved into a fixer upper, need more space for the family or are trying to haul yourself a rung or two up the property ladder, you’ll probably be asking the same question. What are the best ways to add value to your home?

Add a bathroom Find room for an en suite or extra bathroom, and you’ll see a good return on your money. Estimated profit £6,115 - based on an average cost of £4,250 and estimated value increase of £10,365 (5%).

Renovate your fireplaces Did you know that adding a woodburning stove could make your home so much more saleable? Choose one of the new-generation, self-lighting models for maximum wow factor. Estimated profit £6,865 - based on an average cost of £3,500 and estimated value increase of £10,365 (5%)

Paint and decorate Applying a fresh coat of paint or papering the walls is one of the most cost-effective ways to add value. You probably don’t need us to tell you that neutral palette will have the broadest appeal to buyers. Estimated profit £7,515 – based on an average cost of £2,850 and estimated value increase of £10,365 (5%)

Tidy up the garden Gardens sell homes. Fact. So unless your potential buyer is a wildlife expert, it’s unlikely they will want to inherit an overgrown jungle. Invest in some hard landscaping to make your outdoor space more manageable. Or, at the very least, trim back overgrown hedges and mow the lawn. Estimated profit £7,898 - based on an average cost of £7,650 and estimated value increase of £15,548 (7.5%)

Update your central heating A modern system will be a must for most homeowners. If your boiler is more than 15 years old, consider replacing it. Estimated profit £7,970 - based on an average cost of £3,225 and estimated value increase of £11,195 (5.4%)

Embrace open-plan living An updated kitchen alone won’t bring

42

you nearly as much profit as creating an open-plan kitchen and dining space. It’s obviously an easier and more affordable job if you have non-load baring walls that you can knock down - which is what this profit estimate is based on. Estimated profit £10,338 - based on an average cost of £2,100 and estimated value increase of £12,438 (6%)

Make external repairs Potential external issues can be extremely off-putting to house hunters. Painting render and addressing any repointing that may need doing will put their minds at ease. Even small details like a creaking garden gate shouldn’t be overlooked. Estimated profit £11,231 - based on an average cost of £9,500 and estimated value increase of £20,731 (10%)

Convert the loft A popular project at the moment, and one that has the potential to make you a bundle of cash when you sell. However, every project is different, and extra structural work like adding dormer windows or raising the height of the roof will eat into any profit. A dormer loft conversion with a double bedroom and en suite could cost £35,000-£40,000. Estimated profit £13,596 - based on an average cost of £17,500 and estimated value increase of £31,096 (15%)

Take energy saving measures Typical ways to boost energy efficiency are to install double glazing, add cavity wall insulation, or fit solar panels and generate your own power. Estimated profit £18,303 - based on an average cost of £10,720 and estimated value increase of £29,023 (14%)

Convert the garage

If you’ve been using your garage as a dumping ground, converting it is a no-brainer. Just remember, though, if your garage is currently home to an actual car, permanently parking it on a driveway or the road might increase your insurance premium. Estimated profit £18,303 - based on an average cost of £10,720 and estimated value increase of £29,023 (14%)

Seven deadly diet mistakes

W

ondering why you can’t lose weight through dieting no matter what you try? We can almost guarantee it’s because you’re making at least one of these seven diet mistakes.

You try too many diets We all know someone who’s always trying the latest fad diet, always uncertain about what they can and cannot eat, and always absolutely convinced that this is finally the diet that’s going to work. According to a recent survey, over 10 per cent of women diet over five times a year. This wreaks havoc with your bodies, leading to imbalances in your metabolism. That means when you inevitably fall off the wagon on your latest diet, you risk instantly piling on the pounds when you return to your regular eating habits.

You think too much about being fat You might think dieting is just about what you eat, but there are also a number of mental factors that contribute to whether or not your diet is successful. Basically, if you think you are fat, you are more likely to gain weight. People at a healthy weight are more likely to be overweight 10 years later if they believe themselves to be overweight initially. The mental stress caused by thinking that you are fat releases hormones that can lead to an increased appetite and decreased metabolism. That means for your diet to be successful you need to think positively.

You’re eating hidden sugar Sugar is hiding around every unexpected corner just waiting to spoil your diet, so you need to learn how to avoid it. Regular yoghurt, for example, already contains around 13g of sugar per 250ml (8.79 oz), with some flavoured yoghurts (yes, even the supposedly healthy ones) containing

46 46

the equivalent of an additional four teaspoons of sugar per 250ml. Without realising it, these healthy snack imposters could be ruining all of your dieting progress.

You skip breakfast

followed a diet lost 25 per cent more weight than women who only dieted. And while two thirds of the women in the diet and exercise group reached the target weight loss of 10 per cent of their body weight, less than half of the women who only dieted achieved this.

Eating food makes you gain weight, so skipping meals must help you lose weight, right? Wrong.

You let cravings ruin your diet

When breakfast is skipped at the start of the day, the brain is primed to seek out high calorie foods to make up for the energy deficit in the body. That’s why dieters who skip meals are more likely to give in to high calorie snacks later in the day, leading to weight gain instead of weight loss.

Anyone who goes on a diet will experience cravings at some point, most likely in the first couple of days. Giving in to these cravings every once in a while and letting them completely ruin your diet are two completely different things.

You rely on diet soft drinks You’re wrong if you think diet soft drinks are a guilt-free way to enjoy your favourite sugar-filled drinks. Those who drink them are more likely to gain weight than those who drink regular soft drinks. This is all because of artificial sweeteners like aspartame and saccharine which are commonly found in diet drinks.

For example, you might have a slice of cake and decide that another two or three won’t hurt because surely your diet was ruined anyway by the first slice. This is a dangerous mind-set, and is one you need to avoid at absolutely all costs.

These sweeteners confuse your body because it doesn’t experience the intake of calories that it usually associates with sweet tastes. This leads to the release of higher amounts of the hunger-causing hormones insulin and leptin, which in turn increases food cravings.

You don’t exercise Any miracle diet claiming unbelievable levels of sustained weight loss without any exercise is lying to you. Exercise is a key aspect of weight loss, and without it you could be dooming yourself to diet failure and weight gain. A recent study found that women who both exercised and

Mercedes-Benz V-class Marco Polo: Hotel-like Merc comfort

U

ntil 2017 Volkswagen had the OEM glampervan market all to itself in the UK with its long-running California, but that year saw Mercedes-Benz finally come around to offering its V-Class Marco Polo to wellheeled outdoorsy types.

50

Please mention Inside Flintshire Magazine when responding to advertisements

On sale in the UK: Spring 2019 Engine: 4-cylinder, 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel, 236bhp, 369lb ft Transmission: nine-speed automatic, rear-wheel drive Performance: 8.6sec 0-62mph, 133mph, TBC mpg, 161-162g/km Weight / material: TBC kg/steel and aluminium Dimensions (length/width/height in mm): 5140/1928/1980

June Horoscopes Aries (March 21-April 19) If you are tempted to overspend this month, try to resist the urge. This is likely to be a very social period in your calendar and you may need to watch any potential strain on your finances. You will be in great demand on the social circuit and others will seek out your company.

Taurus (April 20-May 20) Your patience could well be put to the test this month. There could be a situation where you will need to forgive and forget, rather than harping on about something that has irritated you. Your emotions may be up and down but mentally you will remain strong and able to deal effectively with whatever may happen.

Gemini (May 21-June 20) This could be a profitable period for Geminis. You will be confident enough to take risks where others wouldn’t dare. If you make investments this month, they may prove profitable in the future. If you approach your bosses about a pay rise they might actually listen to you.

Cancer (June 21-July 22) Cancer charts show you may need to slow down and take more care of your health. If you are prone to skin eruptions (which many born under this earth sign are) your skin could be telling you to avoid junk foods and eat a more healthy diet. You may also need time to de-stress and get away from the workplace.

Leo (July 23-August 22) This is likely to be a steady period for Leos. You are going to experience a certain amount of fulfillment where your career is concerned and there will be much satisfaction to be gained from doing well and achieving your goals. Others will seek you out for advice which they will follow.

Virgo (August 23-September 22) You will be dealing with a lot of money-related issues during this period and your horoscope predictions suggest that any financial speculations you make will be fruitful. You will not indulge in impulsive spending; rather, you will be taking a more measured and careful approach to your finances.

Libra (September 23-October 22) You could subject yourself to some much-needed self-scrutiny this month. If you are feeling the strain of working too hard, then take some time out. If a relationship is not working, then end it. During this time you can be as decisive as you like, as you are unlikely to make a bad decision.

Scorpio (October 23-November 21) Watch out for muscle strain, muscle weakness and leg pain this month. You are likely to be physically restricted in some way. The affliction is only temporary, but it will mean that your physical development will be strong and you are likely to be very sensitive to others’ needs.

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21) This period may find you needing to sort out minor issues in personal relationships. It would be beneficial to all concerned if both parties could listen to the other and act directly and quickly upon what has been said. Sagittarians may need to curb their idealism and learn to be more practical in their relationships.

Capricorn (December 22-January 19) You may be feeling a little fragile - maybe because of work-related stress, family problems or simply because your work/life balance is out of kilter. Either way, those born under the earth sign of Capricorn could find alternative therapies very useful.

Aquarius (January 20-February 18) If you’ve been feeling a bit down in the dumps, maybe due to exhaustion, now is the time to put on a brave face and embrace all the changes going on around you. Everything has an upside and a downside. If you focus more on the positive, things will get better in the long run. Listen to a good friend’s advice.

Pisces (February 19-March 20) You could feel in need of a time out this month so that you can relax and revive. If your body is tired through overwork, then allow it to rest. If your mind is racing, then allow yourself some downtime. If you feel in need of some general refreshment, take a short break from routine. It will rejuvenate you.

This year’s top gardening trends We’ve had our first taste of sunshine early this year, filling us with hope of a great summer ahead – with plenty of time spent outdoors. Be prepared to enjoy that time in style as we ask the experts, across all fields of garden expertise, to give their predictions on the hot new garden trends for 2019. Make the most of your garden this year – whether you want to dine alfresco, grow your own veg or enjoy the many health-giving benefits of the great outdoors. Grow your own The growing popularity of veganism, coupled with rising food prices and a growing appreciation of organic produce, it’s no surprise in 2019 the grow your own movement will really see a resurgence. More and more of us looking to include additional vegetables in our diet and the number of people on exclusively plant-based diets is increasing. Easy to grow vegetables, salads and herbs suitable for growing in small spaces such as wall planters and patio containers will continue to rise in popularity.

Climate change gardening Gardening for a changing climate is set to be a key trend for 2019. Speciallycreated ecological gardens can cope with the UK’s more recent extreme

60

and reclaimed materials and encaustic tiles being used more and more in urban gardens.

Outdoor entertaining Outdoor entertaining and kitchen areas will be a key trend for Spring/Summer 2019 - perfect for those of us who lack space in our kitchens or dining rooms, as we can move entertaining friends and family outside. Create a dedicated area with comfy furniture and mood lighting, complete with a sunken fire pit, BBQ or pizza oven.

Wild meadow gardens weather conditions. It is crucial you plant the right plants for the conditions of each garden, storing water and allowing excess water to be collected then dissipated through the soil. New planting schemes are droughtresistant and less inclined to pamper plants with state-of-the- art irrigation systems. It’s more environmentally responsible to use plants which can largely fend for themselves.

Interior meets exterior Making an outdoor space an extension of the indoors is a huge trend for 2019, with sofas, rugs and cushions dressing our patios in the same way they would our living rooms. Younger garden enthusiasts are looking to style their outside space as they would their interiors. As a result of this new trend we can predict a stark rise in bright coloured accessories and furniture outdoors, along with industrial

There’s a surge to take gardens back to a more natural state. This is a continuing trend for 2019, after lots of garden designers experimented with wildflower and perennial meadows last year. The good news is you don’t need a large plot to incorporate one into your garden. This wilder style has been helped along by the increasing use of instant wildflower meadows.

Multisensory spaces The planting schemes for 2019 are set to be focused on innovative displays of colour, fragrance, light and texture to create a fully immersive space. Select a mix of flowering plants such as busy lizzies and pollinators, like lavender, as they can also benefit the wildlife in your garden. Lavender, a beautifully fragrant pollinator, attracts bees and butterflies, breathing life into your garden. Make sure your growing space has a plentiful supply of sunlight.

In this month...

These momentous historical events all took place in June

1944: D-Day On 6th June 1944, thousands of United States, British and Canadian troops invaded northern France during World War II, driving German forces inland. There were many casualties – an estimated 550,000 troops were either killed, injured or missing during the landings.

1989: Tiananmen Square During the night of 3-4th June 1989, hundreds, possibly thousands, of prodemocracy students were massacred by the Chinese army in Tiananmen Square, Beijing. The students, who had been demonstrating for seven weeks in the square, had been assured by the Chinese Government that there would be no violence.

1215: Signing of the Magna Carta On June 15 1215, King John placed his seal on the Magna Carta, widely held to be the cornerstone of constitutional law today. The Magna Carta was forced upon the unpopular King after a series of spectacular defeats in France and his extortionate exploitation of his feudal rights.

1914: The assassination of Franz Ferdinand On June 28, Archduke Francis Ferdinand, Crown Prince of Austria and his wife were assassinated at Sarajevo by Bosnian Serb Gravilo Princip. The slaying touched off a conflict between the Austro-Hungarian government and Serbia that escalated into World War I.

1815: Napoloen defeated at Waterloo On June 18, 72,000 French troops, led by Napoleon, suffered a crushing military defeat from a combined Allied army of 113,000 British, Dutch, Belgian and Prussian troops. It was a decisive battle, heralding nearly 50 years of peace. Napoleon died alone, in exile on St Helena, on May 5, 1821.

1953: The Rosenbergs executed On June 19, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed by electrocution at Sing Sing Prison in New York. They had been found guilty of providing vital information on the atomic bomb to the Soviet Union during 1944-45. They were the first American civilians to be

sentenced to death for espionage and were also the only married couple ever executed together in the United States.

1876: Custer’s Last Stand On June 25, General George A. Custer, leading 250 men, attacked an encampment of Sioux Indians near Little Bighorn River in Montana. Custer and his men were then attacked by 20004000 Indian braves. Only one scout and a single horse survived. News of the humiliating defeat infuriated Americans and led to all out war. Within a year, the Sioux Indians were a broken and defeated nation.

1919: First non-stop Transatlantic flight The first non-stop transatlantic flight took place in June 1919 when Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Whitten Brown set off in a modified Vickers Vimy. The two British men took off from Lester’s Field, near St. Johns, Newfoundland on June 14, 1919, and landed 16 hours, 27 minutes later on June 15, 1919, at Clifden in Ireland. It was a difficult flight, plagued from the start by snow, freezing fog, engine trouble and ice.
