ibraltar’s majestic rocky outline is one of the great sights of the Mediterranean, with a history to match, embracing early Neanderthal discoveries and many monuments to its pivotal military heritage. Its immense heights, accessed by cable car, offer glorious views and nature walks, with plenty of other sightseeing options, beaches and excursions on land and sea.

This is something you can do under your own steam, but be sure to buy a ticket online to avoid in part the long queues when cruise ships are in port. Note you will still need to exchange your e-ticket at the base station. From the top station you can walk half a mile (800m) downhill to see St Michael’s Cave) by way of the Skywalk, a glass-surfaced platform opened in 2018. The site’s ticket includes several other attractions that can be accessed on foot by road or path from the top station, including the Upper Rock Nature Reserve and O’Hara’s Battery.

What to see and do Gibraltar has enough to keep you occupied all day, but you could spend three to six hours seeing the highlights - on a tour or on your own - and devote the rest of your stay to the beach, shopping or a dolphin-watching boat trip. Alternatively, devote the whole day to trips to Spain or even Morocco. The official tourist board website has useful ideas, links and further information, especially on the confusing array of tickets required for combinations of sights.

Alternatively, continue on foot just over a mile (2km) to another of the Territory’s key sights, the Great Siege Tunnels, which you can also access from the top station if you don’t want to see the Cave. Visit walkgibraltar.com for excellent guided walks in the area. Plenty of other tours are available if you don’t want to explore independently, and can save time on a short stay. Typically these last 90 minutes, three hours or six hours, with similar highlights whether you choose the popular official taxi tours or the more popular Gibraltar Rock Tours.

Gibraltar’s most popular sightseeing trip is the cable car from the old town, which climbs 1350ft (412m) in

superb birdlife, especially migrating birds: contact Avian Tours for details of day excursions.

It is possible to join excursions to destinations farther afield, but check timings and days of operation: some tours require 10 hours or more and operate only one or two days a week. Parody Tours is typical, with excursions that include Tangiers (from £85 per person), Jerez (£70), Ronda (£70) and elsewhere. Local craft specialities include silverware and textiles, notably the Spanish shawls in lace and silk known as mantillas, along with Gibraltar Crystal glass – this factory and shop features a free exhibition and glassblowing demonstrations. Gibraltar Arts and Crafts in the central Casemates Square makes a good one-stop shop for attractive local gifts. Mercedes-Benz V-class Marco Polo: Hotel-like Merc comfort ntil 2017 Volkswagen had the OEM glampervan market all to itself in the UK with its long-running California, but that year saw Mercedes-Benz finally come around to offering its V-Class Marco Polo to wellheeled outdoorsy types. Since then, the allure of the three-pointed star has ensured a small-but-lucrative trickle of customers has plumped for one Merc’s compact motorhomes, with its appeal broadened further by the arrival of the less-costly Horizon version, without fitted kitchen and other niceties.

Design The Marco Polo has undergone one of the mildest facelifts in automotive history - think of it more as though it’s been using anti-wrinkle cream rather than going under the surgeon’s knife. There are differences, though, but admittedly they’re unlikely to catch the eye of anyone but a Benz -spotter.

Depending on how much you spend on extras there are some new colours and different alloy wheel designs.

Interior

Motoring Sport models have a much larger lower grille in the front bumper, while the sportier (yes, sportier than Sport itself) AMG Line has chrome-look pins on its spangly new grille. Other Mercs have sported (sorry) this look for a while, so in essence it’s merely bringing the Marco Polo – and its V-Class MPV sibling – into line. You can also spec intelligent-beam LED headlamps for the first time on this model, which cutout the brighter light to avoid getting on the wick of other road users.

As with the outside, there are a handful of differences, including turbine-style airvents as per the E-Class, different trim appliques for the dashboard and door panels and… that’s about it. Prices have yet to be confirmed for UKmarket Marco Polos, but options will include an upgraded central multimedia screen and a second screen within the instrument binnacle to replace the conventional gaugesl.

Performance Starting-up a Marco Polo no longer sounds like you’re cranking an old Routemaster London bus into life on a cold Monday morning. Gone is the venerable old 2.1-litre gruffmatic noisily going about its business - instead is the well-regarded 1950cc OM654 diesel that’s gradually being introduced across Mercedes’ car range. Two versions are offered for British buyers: the 161bhp V220d and the punchier 236bhp V300d.

FATHER’S DAY

If you’ve driven an earlier Marco Polo then you’ll be immediately struck by how quiet the new motor is - we’ve sampled the V300d so far and were struck by the refinement both at cruising speeds and under hard acceleration. Despite producing 500Nm of torque from 1600rpm its urgency is very easy to modulate, making it a doddle to ease slowly around town - or camp sites - yet briskly get up to motorway speeds. Aiding the hushed progress is Merc’s 9G-Tronic automatic transmission, which replaces the older sevenspeeder. For the most part its satisfyingly slick, progressing through its ratios without a hint of transmission shunt.

As a home from home? At the Marco Polo’s business end, it’s a case of as you were, which I no bad thing in most respects. Sure, it’s a tad snug for four, and if you spec the optional fifth seat you’ll need to find somewhere to store it before you convert the rear bench into a bed, but the built-in units, blinds and fold-out table all feel of good quality. It’s all the work of Westfalia, a firm that’s been in the camper van conversion business (whispers, starting with VWs) for over four decades, so it should be decent. Remember that like the California, the Marco Polo’s sole access door to the rear compartment - as well as its awning - are located on the right-hand side of the vehicle.

Where the Mercedes makes the most sense is if you’re going to be taking it to various corners of the country or wider continent with great regularity, combining much of the freedom of camping with a degree of hotel-like comfort. So, this or a California? Both do a great job, but the Mercedes feels that little bit more upmarket and isn’t bound by the Dub Scene like the VW is - by comparison, the Marco Polo’s a virtue of discretion and perhaps the better for it.

Driveability More good news: even if you’ve not driven something this size before, there’s little to be daunted about. The controls are light, all-round visibility is excellent - even without the 360-degree camera system - and you’re sat high with a commanding view of the road ahead, over the top of many SUVs, in fact. What it’s not is exciting to throw around through a series of sweeping bends. Doing so with cupboards full of crockery isn’t wise anyway, but while it has sufficient traction to maintain tight lines through corners, you’re aware of its desire to lean over as you do so.

Specifications

Verdict You could live with a V-Class Marco Polo as your daily driver, but doing so would be a compromise, as you’d be constantly hauling around a lot of kit that you’ll likely only use a few weekends a year at most. It’s an expensive toy in those instances.

They vary from security cameras to smart lights, connected speakers to watering devices for your plants. Each of the devices here has its own smartphone app so you can control it remotely. Manchester tart The Manchester tart is an easy custard and fruit tart adorned with toasty coconut. Fresh raspberries elevate it to a dinner party pudding. baking beans. Transfer the pastry case to the oven and bake for 15 minutes, or until pale golden-brown.

Method 1 Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Grease a 24cm/10in tart tin with butter. 2 Roll out the shortcrust pastry onto a lightly floured work surface to a 0.5cm/¼in thickness. Line the prepared tart tin with the pastry. Prick the pastry several times with a fork, then chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.

3 When the pastry case has rested, place a sheet of baking parchment into it and half-fill with

Set the pastry base aside. 6 Bring the milk, vanilla pod and vanilla seeds to the boil in a pan, then reduce the heat to a simmer and simmer for 1-2 minutes. Remove the vanilla pod (it can be cleaned thoroughly and reused in another recipe). 7 In a bowl, beat together the egg yolks and sugar until well combined.

8 Pour the hot milk and vanilla mixture over the egg and sugar mixture, whisking continuously, until the mixture is smooth and well combined. Return the mixture to the pan over a medium heat. Whisk in the cornflour, a tablespoon at a time, until well combined, then heat, stirring continuously until the mixture is thick enough to coat the back of the spoon. 9 Transfer the custard mixture to a clean bowl and dust with the icing sugar (this prevents a skin forming on the surface of the custard). Set aside to cool in the fridge for 30 minutes. 10 Whisk the whipped double cream into the chilled custard mixture until well combined.

11 Spoon the custard and cream mixture into the pastry case in an even layer. Sprinkle over the remaining fresh raspberries. To serve, sprinkle over the toasted coconut. Serve immediately.

ondering why you can’t lose weight through dieting no matter what you try? We can almost guarantee it’s because you’re making at least one of these seven diet mistakes.

You try too many diets We all know someone who’s always trying the latest fad diet, always uncertain about what they can and cannot eat, and always absolutely convinced that this is finally the diet that’s going to work. According to a recent survey, over 10 per cent of women diet over five times a year. This wreaks havoc with your bodies, leading to imbalances in your metabolism. That means when you inevitably fall off the wagon on your latest diet, you risk instantly piling on the pounds when you return to your regular eating habits.

You think too much about being fat You might think dieting is just about what you eat, but there are also a number of mental factors that contribute to whether or not your diet is successful. Basically, if you think you are fat, you are more likely to gain weight. People at a healthy weight are more likely to be overweight 10 years later if they believe themselves to be overweight initially. The mental stress caused by thinking that you are fat releases hormones that can lead to an increased appetite and decreased metabolism. That means for your diet to be successful you need to think positively.

You’re eating hidden sugar Sugar is hiding around every unexpected corner just waiting to spoil your diet, so you need to learn how to avoid it. Regular yoghurt, for example, already contains around 13g of sugar per 250ml (8.79 oz), with some flavoured yoghurts (yes, even the supposedly healthy ones) containing

the equivalent of an additional four teaspoons of sugar per 250ml. Without realising it, these healthy snack imposters could be ruining all of your dieting progress.

You skip breakfast

Anyone who goes on a diet will experience cravings at some point, most likely in the first couple of days. Giving in to these cravings every once in a while and letting them completely ruin your diet are two completely different things.

You rely on diet soft drinks You’re wrong if you think diet soft drinks are a guilt-free way to enjoy your favourite sugar-filled drinks. Those who drink them are more likely to gain weight than those who drink regular soft drinks. This is all because of artificial sweeteners like aspartame and saccharine which are commonly found in diet drinks.

For example, you might have a slice of cake and decide that another two or three won’t hurt because surely your diet was ruined anyway by the first slice. This is a dangerous mind-set, and is one you need to avoid at absolutely all costs.

These sweeteners confuse your body because it doesn’t experience the intake of calories that it usually associates with sweet tastes. This leads to the release of higher amounts of the hunger-causing hormones insulin and leptin, which in turn increases food cravings.

You don’t exercise Any miracle diet claiming unbelievable levels of sustained weight loss without any exercise is lying to you. These momentous historical events all took place in June

1944: D-Day On 6th June 1944, thousands of United States, British and Canadian troops invaded northern France during World War II, driving German forces inland. There were many casualties – an estimated 550,000 troops were either killed, injured or missing during the landings.

1989: Tiananmen Square During the night of 3-4th June 1989, hundreds, possibly thousands, of prodemocracy students were massacred by the Chinese army in Tiananmen Square, Beijing. The students, who had been demonstrating for seven weeks in the square, had been assured by the Chinese Government that there would be no violence.

1215: Signing of the Magna Carta On June 15 1215, King John placed his seal on the Magna Carta, widely held to be the cornerstone of constitutional law today. The Magna Carta was forced upon the unpopular King after a series of spectacular defeats in France and his extortionate exploitation of his feudal rights.

1914: The assassination of Franz Ferdinand On June 28, Archduke Francis Ferdinand, Crown Prince of Austria and his wife were assassinated at Sarajevo by Bosnian Serb Gravilo Princip. The slaying touched off a conflict between the Austro-Hungarian government and Serbia that escalated into World War I.

1815: Napoloen defeated at Waterloo On June 18, 72,000 French troops, led by Napoleon, suffered a crushing military defeat from a combined Allied army of 113,000 British, Dutch, Belgian and Prussian troops. It was a decisive battle, heralding nearly 50 years of peace. Napoleon died alone, in exile on St Helena, on May 5, 1821.

1953: The Rosenbergs executed On June 19, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed by electrocution at Sing Sing Prison in New York. They had been found guilty of providing vital information on the atomic bomb to the Soviet Union during 1944-45. They were the first American civilians to be

sentenced to death for espionage and were also the only married couple ever executed together in the United States.

1876: Custer’s Last Stand On June 25, General George A. Custer, leading 250 men, attacked an encampment of Sioux Indians near Little Bighorn River in Montana. Custer and his men were then attacked by 20004000 Indian braves. Only one scout and a single horse survived. News of the humiliating defeat infuriated Americans and led to all out war. Within a year, the Sioux Indians were a broken and defeated nation.

1919: First non-stop Transatlantic flight The first non-stop transatlantic flight took place in June 1919 when Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Whitten Brown set off in a modified Vickers Vimy. The two British men took off from Lester’s Field, near St. Johns, Newfoundland on June 14, 1919, and landed 16 hours, 27 minutes later on June 15, 1919, at Clifden in Ireland. It was a difficult flight, plagued from the start by snow, freezing fog, engine trouble and ice.

Getting into the swim of it... S wimming is one of the world’s most popular sports. As well as being fun, swimming is a great way to keep fit, stay healthy and make friends. Swimming is a healthy activity that you can continue for a lifetime. It is a low-impact activity that has many physical and mental health benefits.

Swimming for recreation Swimming is a great recreational activity for people of all ages. Recreational swimming can provide you with a low-impact workout and it’s also a good way to relax and feel good. Common swimming styles in recreational swimming are breaststroke, backstroke, side stroke and freestyle.

Competitive swimming Some people who enjoy swimming want to take it to a competitive level. This can provide the health benefits of a vigorous workout as well as the fun and thrill of competition. The main strokes used in competitive swimming are breaststroke, freestyle, backstroke and butterfly. The distances swum in

competition swimming can vary from 50 metres in a pool to much further distances in open water.

Swimming is a great workout because you need to move your whole body against the resistance of the water.
