Welcome to our first Spring edition. I certainly have my fingers crossed that it’s not just the weather that will be improving over the coming weeks but hopefully a return to some sort of normality throughout our lives.
Don’t forget Mother’s day on Sunday the 14th March. Rather than our usual Mother Day gift ideas this year we have teamed up with some of our local craft and gift businesses who have some fantastic gift ideas to help spoil your mums. So what else do we have for you to look forward to in this month’s jam packed issue? We take a look at England’s South West coast and having been there
quite a few times I can honestly say it’s a beautiful part of the UK. What will be the fashion trends this Spring? see pages 14-15. Maybe our only holiday this year will be in this country, so why not do something different and hire a motorhome so you can see and visit more places. See pages 18-19. The South West Coast Path The South West Coast Path is 630 miles long and is the longest National Trail in the country. Starting at Minehead in Somerset it runs along the coastline of Exmoor, continuing along the coast of North Devon into Cornwall. It follows the entire coastline of Cornwall, crossing
the mouth of the River Tamar and continuing into Devon. After running along the south coast of Devon it then follows the Dorset coastline before finally ending at Poole Harbour. While much of the Coast Path is quite strenuous there are many sections that are much gentler, and are suitable for people with mobility problems.

FASHION Spring 2021
DENIM
Denim loosens up this Spring! Jeans sit high on the waist, cinched with a belt, but loose in the leg for ultimate comfort without sacrificing style. Don’t confine this daytime classic to weekend wear, however. Go for a more evening feel with delicate lace crop tops and daring leopard -print jackets.
MBD
Say hello to the Modern Black Dress, your new wardrobe failsafe... The little black dress has been reinvented this Spring with entirely contemporary proportions. Lart year’s trend for 1970s fringing is turned on its head by applying it to a capelike dress that feels distinctly modernist rather than retro.
PUFFED
Ever romantic, the puffed sleeve has become something of a wardrobe mainstay in recent seasons.
The new collections, however, toned down the girlishness and brought a tougher attitude, with puffed proportions and billowy sleeves featuring on shirt dresses.
See also drop-waist peplum hemlines on functional cotton-twill coats, curved-sleeve cropped jackets and button-up poet’s blouses.

TRENDS
ROM Crayola-colored dresses to ’70s-inspired denims and decadent leathers, the spring 2021 collections brought an array of trends to excite and inspire - celebrating the art of dressing up for those rare occasions when we do go out and the idea of dressing your best to feel your best.
RED
There’s something rather alluring about the colour red - the hue of passion, love, adventure and energy. Whisper-thin Grecian gowns look and feel instantly romantic, while midi-length silhouettes cinched at the waist and paired with a ladylike heel display a 1940s elegance.
LEATHER LUXE
Leather returns this season, from sumptuous midi dresses with poufy sleeves to A-line maxi skirts, supple suiting and kaftan-style dresses.
After last year’s earthy hues, leather is back in classic black for Spring, giving a contrast to the new season’s cottons and colorful hues we will otherwise be filling our newseason wardrobes with. It’s never been easier to get a head start - look for utilitarian garments like shirts, midi dresses and loose blazers and pair with simple T-shirts and turtleneck sweaters to luxe up everyday styles.

Hymer Vision Venture
Nissan e-NV200 by Sussex Campervans £59,999
Sussex Campervans are well ahead of the game with their electric van. And all-electric means just that - down to the installation of an induction hob cooker, no fuel tanks of any kind are needed in this van. The base model was designed by Nissan as a city van, equipping it for those tight pitches or as a euro-camper negotiating the narrow streets of Paris or Rome. Slimline it might be, but this camper has a generous amount of space inside, making it a real leader in this field. The power source is 40kWh made of 4 lithium powercells providing 109HP, with batteries are stored low, so as not to eat into the usable space.
Hymer’s four wheel drive concept is designed to be the ultimate tourer. The concept vehicle uses over 20 innovative materials and the technical know-how of BASF. Dark green ultra resilient paintwork isn’t just for show. Energy-efficient Chromacool technology from BASF reduces the surface temperature of the vehicle by 20°C and that of the interior by up to 4°C. The interior, designed by Studio SYN brings more than a little luxury to your wild camp and the attention to innovative detail provides for a mind-blowing amount of versatility including a very smart spacesaving Vario washroom.

Dreamer Select Family Van £57,600
Based again on the trusted Fiat Ducato, Dreamer has opted for the height of the H3 model which allows for this addition and also makes life far easier due to the standing space. Main living area and kitchenette are well designed and built with clever storage solutions and a large capacity fridge. Modular bunks at the rear also allow for more storage in this area and the Dreamer Family Van comes with a full size washroom and inboard fresh and waste water tanks. This is a practical choice for the travelling family, so well worth a look when considering a motorhome purchase.
Best campervan
VW T6.1 Treago by Bodans £42,600
Made by Bodans, who specialise in the design and construction of luxury conversions of VW’s T5 and T6 transporters, the Treago uses the latest T6 model which is lovingly crafted into this contemporary campervan that’s available as a two berth or four berth.
Choose any evel specification from the new T6 range and Bodans will create your camper. The Trego comes with an elevating roof, which makes rustling up supper in the L shaped kitchen a pleasure for even the tallest camper! This is a surfer’s dream, a perfect wild camper, or a couple’s luxury getaway, that can also be used as a very practical daily drive.

It happened this month ...in1996: The Dunblane massacre
On Wednesday March 13, Thomas Hamilton, aged 43, invaded Dunblane primary School. In less than five minutes, Hamilton had shot sixteen pupils and one teacher dead, and injured fifteen others, before killing himself. It remains the deadliest mass shooting in British history. A motive was never established, although Hamilton had become an assistant Boy Scout leader at the age of 20 and
soon came under suspicion because of his behaviour toward boys. In the aftermath of the massacre, residents of Dunblane initiated the Snowdrop Campaign to seek changes in British gun laws. The campaign’s petition gathered some 750,000 signatures, and in February 1997 Parliament responded by passing a law banning private ownership of handguns above .22 calibre, and in November 1997 the ban was extended to all handguns.
...in1981:
The first London Marathon
Now an established fixture on the sporting calendar, the first London Marathon took place on March 29, 1981.
The elite men’s race was won by two athletes, American Dick Beardsley and Inge Simonsen of Norway, who crossed the finish line holding hands. The women’s race was won by Britain’s Joyce Smith. The brainchild of Olympic champion and journalist Chris Brasher and athlete John Disley, the inaugural event saw 6,255 runners complete the gruelling 26.2 mile course. By 2019, the number of competitors had swelled to almost 40,000.

...in1963: Alcatraz closes
On March 21, Alcatraz Prison in San Francisco Bay closed down and transferred its last prisoners. At its peak in the 1950s, “The Rock,” or “America’s Devil’s Island,” housed over 200 inmates at the maximum-security facility. Alcatraz remains notorious for its harsh conditions and its record for being inescapable. The twelve-acre rocky island featured the most advanced security of the time, including some of the first metal detectors. Strict rules were enforced against its unfortunate inmates, and nearly complete silence was mandated at all times.

Cancer
(June 21 - July 22)
March will be a good time for overseeing changes. There could be significant changes made in a career which will engender a feeling of excitement and positivity. At home, there are unlikely to be any changes, but recent events in your love life may cause you to question previous assumptions. This month could prove rather slow moving for you and you might find yourself thinking of ways to speed things up. If you have time on your hands, why not inprove your own personal skill set through additional training?
Leo
(July 23 - August 22)
Lions could find this is the month to focus on hobbies and interests. You will be physically active, enjoying both your work and your home life. For single Leos, there could be the beginnings of a new romance.
Virgo
(August 23 - September 22)
You may find yourself in a more reflective state. You will be very intuitive, in touch with other people’s emotions as well as your own. It could be a very mystical time for some Virgos, where spirituality is likely to be the main focus.
Libra (September 23 - October 22)

Scorpio
(October 23 - November 21)
It’s probable that your drive and intense focus on your work will bring excellent rewards, both in terms of your career and any business deals you manage to set up. Certainly, great gains and considerable wealth could come to you from your professional life.
Sagittarius
(November 22 - December 21)
In business and professional matters you are likely to enjoy new challenges, with a considerable amount of success to follow. Your determination to succeed, your focus and your ability are all factors that will make this an extremely positive spell for you
Capricorn
(December 22 - January 19)
Aquarius
(January 20 - February 18)
Luck will favour both men and women born under the water sign of the Goat this month. Your natural instincts will alert you to the important things to worry about, so try not to get bogged down by trivia and learn how to best prioritise your time. This has the potential to be a really exciting time for Aquarians. If you are thinking about extending your family, planning for a new baby, this could be the perfect time. It will also be a very pleasurable spell for those not interested in having more children.
Pisces
(February 19 - March 20)
You may be in a dreamy mood this month. Your focus will be on your own professional development and you may already have your eyes set on a new goal. You can be assured that your boss has already noticed you and you have nothing to worry about.

Simple shed gym ideas Create a space to keep up your fitness regime at home
F
OR those looking for ways to carry out exercise at home, gyms continue to be closed. Many people are setting up savvy shed gyms, to provide a smart exercise solution.
This alternative space, outside the home, can help to create a safe space to focus on exercise and nothing else. It could be the perfect space to house all your workout gear, away from the house. If you have a shed, you are ready to go. Just be mindful of the size of the space, before you embark on exercising. Is the roof high enough if you plan on jumping, for instance.
Add mirrors
Not only will it help to welcome light into the small space, but mirrors are actually very helpful to ensure your posture is correct. Seeing a reflection is also a good way to stay grounded in the space, meaning you can remain remain mindful and focus on being in the moment.
Stay organised with shelving
Make your home gym feel just like the real thing, with every
42
piece of equipment returned to its rightful place after each workout. Keeping the space clutter-free will help to create a better environment for exercise.
Lay supportive flooring
The standard shed concrete base and wooden standing will provide strength, but very little in the way of comfort. Add a layer of cushioning and insulation with the help of simple interlocking foam floor mats.
Paint a chalkboard
A splash of blackboard paint can go a long way in a home gym. From setting out a workout plan to adding motivational messages or goals - the walls can be used to help guide and improve your workout.
Repurpose furniture
Use furniture you already have, if you’re looking to keep costs low. A simple garden bench is ideal as a sturdy base for all manner of workouts.
Brighten with festoon lights
Give sheds a stylish touch with a string of on-trend festoon lights - made famous by the Love Island Villa.

Crispy Chinese duck with peaches If you love restaurant Peking duck with plum sauce, try this version with sticky sesame and hoisin peaches.
Ingredients
Step-by-step
l 1 duck, about 2-2.5kg/4lb 8oz-5lb 8oz l 1 peach l 2 tsp Chinese five-spice powder l 2 tsp Sichuan pepper l 2 tsp sea salt l jasmine rice and shredded spring onions, to serve
1 Heat oven to 140C/120C fan/gas 1. Prick the duck
For the peaches
2 Meanwhile, put the peaches, cut-side up, in a snug-ish ovenproof dish. Mix the honey, vinegar, sesame oil, ginger and hoisin with 3 tbsp water. Pour over the peaches, then scatter over the sesame seeds.
l 5 peaches , halved and stoned l 2 tbsp honey l 2 tbsp Japanese or rice wine vinegar
l 3 tbsp sesame oil l 2 tbsp chopped ginger
l 6 tbsp hoisin sauce
skin all over with a fork – don’t go too deep or you’ll puncture the meat instead and lose all the juices during cooking. Push the whole peach up into the duck’s cavity, neatly tuck in any excess fat and tie the legs together with string. Using a pestle and mortar, grind together the Chinese five-spice, Sichuan pepper and sea salt. Rub all over the duck and sit, breast-side down, on a rack in a roasting tin. Roast for three hours.
Prep: 35min
Cook: 3hrs 5mins
l 2 tsp toasted sesame seed
3 Lift the duck out of the oven and drain off any fat in the tin. Turn up the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6 and flip the duck over so it is now breast-side up. Roast for 30 mins more, with the peaches on the shelf below, until the duck is brown and crispy and the peaches are tender. Serve with jasmine rice and shredded spring onions.

Spring in the garden
W
ITH Spring on the way, why not have a go at these seasonal garden projects. Last month we gave you some tips on growing roses for Valentines’ Day and also for taking care of garden birds. This month, we have some ideas to help you prepare for Spring, both inside and out.
Start an indoor herb garden Growing tender herbs indoors is an easy way to start growing your own food. All you need is a warm, brightly lit windowsill. Mint, dill, chives, basil, parsley, coriander and oregano will all thrive on a windowsill.
Fill your containers with potting compost and sow the seeds directly onto the surface. Cover with a very fine layer of potting compost - it helps to sprinkle this so you don’t bury the seeds too deep. Water in.
otherwise great garden. Taking care of your fences not only gives your garden a designer ‘finished’ feel, it also prolongs the life of the wood. This will save you money over the years. Most fence treatments these days contain wood preservatives to protect from water damage. You can choose from natural-looking stains or more pigmented paints, and both come in a huge range of shades. First, repair any damage and refasten loose boards and panels. Clean off any dirt with a stiff brush and some warm water. Sand away any splinters and remove algae with an algaecide. You can apply the stain or paint with a brush or roller, but if you have a lot of fence panels I’d recommend a spray system. Make sure to cover the tops of panels and posts, which are most vulnerable to water damage.
Cover the container with a clear plastic bag to create a makeshift propagator and put it somewhere warm (ideally 18C) until the seeds germinate. Then remove the plastic cover and place the pots somewhere bright and warm. Harvest the leaves regularly to keep the plants vigorous, and water deeply when the compost feels a tad dry.
Repair and paint fences
It is easy to think of fences merely as practical physical boundaries, but shabby, dirty wood can detract from an

How does GPS work?
Part One
One of the best features of any smartphone is the way it can determine where you are while you’re there. This has some downsides - irritating location-based ads or tracking your movements come to mind - but being able to see where you are, where you need to be, and exactly how to get there is mindboggling.
What is GPS?
PS stands for Global Positioning System. It’s a technology developed by the U.S. Navy and currently owned (yes, owned) by the U.S. government and overseen by its Air Force. It’s free for everyone to use and primarily a North American utility. GPS is a radio navigation system. It uses radio waves between satellites and a receiver inside your phone to provide location and time information to any software that needs to use it. You don’t have to send any actual data back into space for GPS to work; you only need to be able to receive data from four or more of the 28 satellites in orbit that are dedicated for geolocation use. GPS is precise, but it’s slow and uses a lot of power on both ends. Your receiver chip determines which satellites are visible and unobstructed, then starts gathering data from the satellites with the strongest signals. GPS data is slow, and this is by design - satellites run on rechargeable batteries, and sending a fast signal hundreds of thousands of miles would require
more power so it’ll take up to a minute to get your geolocation. Your phone’s GPS receiver uses the data from these signals to triangulate where you are and what time it is. Notice the word triangulation and the mention above that four satellites are required for GPS to work. The fourth signal is used to determine altitude so you can get your geolocation data on a map with only three signals. GPS receivers use a lot of power and require an unobstructed view of multiple satellites to work. Obstructions can include tall buildings, and that means the places where most of us live can (and does) have trouble getting the data it needs all of the time. That’s where AGPS comes into the picture.
AGPS will be explained next month... 62

How the cloud works Last month we explained what the cloud is and what it can be used for, as well as its advantages over normal computing and storage. Now we examine how your data is stored in the cloud and assess how safe it is.
Where’s my stuff?
Two words: data centres. Anything you’ve uploaded to the cloud, or that you run from the cloud, exists on dedicated servers and storage volumes housed in vast warehouses, often situated on campuses full of such warehouses. Data centres are owned by cloud service providers, who are responsible for keeping the servers up and running. The job of all data centres is to keep your data physically safe from theft and destruction, and to make sure it’s available whenever you want to access it. Once you’ve put your data in the cloud, it may be physically stored in many different places, countries or even continents, depending on where the data centres are located. Cloud providers actually make multiple copies of the data you upload and store them in different locales to ensure that it won’t be compromised. The physical location of their stored data is irrelevant to the majority of people, since it can be called together over the internet almost instantly.
So, who to trust? You can rest assured that - since cloud storage companies live and die by their reputation - they take great pains to employ the most advanced security techniques and provide the most reliable service possible.
How safe is the cloud?
The cloud may promise to lift the burden of our ever-increasing data storage needs, but how do we know our data is truly safe when we entrust it to a cloud provider? We’ve already learned that cloud providers store backups in multiple locations, and these secret locations are heavily reinforced, guarded and internally protected to prevent theft of the storage hardware. To secure your data cloud systems use authentication processes like usernames and passwords to limit access, and data encryption (diagram, right) to protect data that is stolen or intercepted en route.

Tracing Your Welsh Ancestors A Guide For Family Historians AUTHOR: Beryl Evans Few previous publications have focused on Welsh family history, and none have provided a comprehensive guide to the genealogical information available and where to find it. That is why the publication of Beryl Evans’s new Welsh family history handbook is such a significant event in the field. Her detailed, accessible, authoritative guide will be essential reading and reference for anyone who is eager to research ancestors from Wales. She describes the key archival sources and shows how the development of new technology, the internet in particular, has made them so much easier to explore. Drawing on her long experience of family history work, she gives clear practical advice on how to start a research project, and she sketches in the outlines of Welsh history, Welsh surnames and place-names and the Welsh language.
printed records. Beryl Evans’s handbook will be a basic text for researchers of Welsh descent and for anyone who is keen to learn about Welsh history. About Beryl Evans Beryl Evans is Research Services Manager at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth and has been researching Welsh family history for thirty years.
