l generous pinch of saffron threads l 1 tbsp sherry vinegar l 1½ tbsp honey l 1 tbsp finely chopped parsley or chopped toasted blanched almonds l Cooked couscous, to serve
Prep: 15 min
1 Make sure your lamb isn’t too damp - pat it dry with kitchen paper if you need to, otherwise it won’t colour well. Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a large casserole dish and brown the lamb over a high heat in batches (if you crowd the pan the meat will sweat and not brown). Remove with a slotted spoon as you go. When all the lamb is browned, add the remaining oil and cook the onion and peppers over a medium heat until the onion is golden and the vegetables are softened. Add the garlic and paprika, and cook for a further 1 min, then add the sherry and bring to a simmer.
3 In the last half hour of cooking time, remove the lid so that the sherry and stock can reduce. You want to end up with completely tender meat in a flavoursome gravy – how long this takes will depend on how wide your pan is so you may need to give it longer than 30 mins. Check the seasoning - you’re unlikely to need to adjust the vinegar or honey but you might want to sweeten the dish slightly. Scatter the parsley or almonds on top (or use both. Serve with the couscous.

Holidays
The six best destinations for an April family holiday W
HETHER Easter is early or late, as it is this year, the April school holidays offer grand scope for a family trip. You could fly long-haul for culture or reliable beachy sunshine, or you might seek an active break somewhere in Europe, enjoying the very first rays of springtime sun.
1. Guaranteed sunshine in the Canaries The quickest way to a sunny break is a four-hour flight to the Canary Islands. Choose the best island for your family using our guide. Tenerife and Lanzarote have the most child-focused hotels - Princesa Yaiza on the latter is a perennial favourite, thanks to its all-singing and dancing kids’ club and spa. Tots to Travel offers villas geared up for babies and toddlers on either island. For older children, consider packages from operators like Cachet Travel, Classic Collection, Prestige Holidays, Thomas Cook and TUI.
2. Early spring in Cyprus The mildest climate in the Med can be found in Cyprus, where you should see highs of 21C, and nine hours of sunshine a day - great for anyone emerging from a British winter. In April, the wild flowers are in bloom, and you’re well before peak season, so operators offer reasonable packages. Paphos is the main resort, and the north coast of the Akamas peninsula is the place to go to escape package holidays.
passed through, but while there was devastation, more than 70 per cent of the Caribbean remains open for - and in need of - business. For real seclusion, head to the beautiful island of Nevis, either to the Four Seasons resort, with its golf and watersports, or to the more lowkey but very pretty Nisbet Plantation. Both are waterside (unusual on Nevis). For keenly priced trips, search Thomas Cook for destinations, including Antigua.
Disneyworld, California and (below) the Canary Islands.
3. Caribbean break This is an excellent time of year for a trip to the Caribbean; the longer Easter holiday will allow you to recover from jetlag and have plenty of time to relax on the beach. The region took a hard blow last autumn when two category five hurricanes

4. Culture in Japan
The long Easter holiday is the perfect time for a long-haul cultural trip before the heat of the summer months, and this is the perfect time of year to visit Japan. Tokyo showcases Japan’s technological modernity. Its bright lights, towering skyscrapers and hectic streets need no introduction. Osaka is the kitchen of the nation: you can sample the country’s delicious and varied cuisine here. Kyoto is the cultural capital: grand palaces, historic shrines, wonderful gardens and kimono-clad geisha grace its streets. The 6,800 islands of Japan contain beautiful countryside, with highlights including Mount Fuji and the paradise that is Okinawa. Go to jasmineholidays.co.uk/ Japan for more information.
5. European city break Even if you can’t get much time off work, a long weekend to a European city offers a chance to learn and indulge in some culinary explorations. Whether you sign up for a ThatMuse scavenger hunt in Paris or London, a marionette opera in Vienna, or a gladiator lesson in Rome, there are plenty of ways to make the best of European culture accessible to even the youngest visitors. Visit destinology.co.uk and loveholidays.com for more details
The Hollywood Walk of Fame on Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles
6. Sun, fun & films in California If you’re after sun and theme parks but also fancy a bit of monumental landscapes, fitness and culture, California is a treat. Whether it’s Disneyworld, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Venice Beach, the charms of San Francisco or
the world-famous San Diego Zoo, it’s the perfect place for a family holiday with a touch of glamour and glitz. In California, you always feel like you’ve just walked onto a film set and you’re starring in your own movie! April is the best time to visit, before the heat of the summer really kicks in. Go to visitcalifornia.com/uk for details.

THE MILLSTONE

his month we visited award winning restaurant, the Millstone which is situated in Penyyfordd, the imposing large red brick building can’t be missed with its prominent position and it is in easy access from Chester as well as Flintshire and Wrexham.
pineapple express IPA or maybe a cherry gin sling.
The inviting building certainly does not disappoint when entering it is extremely modern but still offers a warm homely atmosphere. There is a carpeted area as well as a bar area which has sumptuous leather armchairs, dark wood tables and gastro fixture and fittings with no expense spared. You can sample the culinary delights as you relax and enjoy the ambiance with a drink from the extensive bar, maybe a Waffle and blueberry stout,
They promise to offer innovative dishes, mixing distinct flavours and textures that work in harmony as well as offering home-comfort favourites so we really could not wait to see if the Millstone would live up to this!

The philosophy of the Millstone is that food should be simple and fresh. They work tirelessly to source the finest local ingredients this includes all their beef and pork being sourced from Celtic pride and all the poultry is direct from the farm of renowned producers J & S Gosnargh.
on a board as it is often not in view for all tables to see. My dining partner chose Pan fried king prawns, squid & chorizo with baby tomatoes and grilled flatbread. This was extremely Mediterranean and reminded us of food cooked in clay dishes, all the flavours worked together and caramelised with onions and spices creating a lovely base to the dish to mop up with the flatbread. The Prawns and squid were fresh and cooked to perfection.
The waitress that showed us to our table was polite and efficient. After taking our drink order she explained the soup of the day and also gave us a separate menu with specials on , this was much better than having it

least Perl Wen Brie an organic creamy brie style cheese. Our favourite was Perl las blue, Caws Cenarth which not surprisingly is an international Cheese awards winner made in Nantwich. I chose my starter from the special sheet; it was brought out promptly and the first thing we noticed was the superb presentation. I ordered Crispy Salt & Pepper Fried chicken strips with watermelon, pomegranates, basil & fresh mint, It was very different. I had never had such tasty salty flavours mixed with fresh, light zingy tastes from the watermelon, pomegranates, basil and mint but a taste bud sensation. For the main meal we ordered Rump of Welsh Lamb with garlic mash, roasted Jerusalem artichokes, chargrilled red onion relish, olives, mint served with red wine jus and a Lemon and Harissa spiced chicken breast burger in a toasted rosemary focaccia with sour cream and baby gem lettuce. The Chicken burger came out first this was served on a platter with a dish of triple cooked chips which were amazingly crispy and then accompanied by homemade
creamy coleslaw, salsa and pickles. The lemon and harissa spiced chicken burger did not disappoint and was delicious. But the Rump of Welsh Lamb was really something else, it was cooked pink as ordered and literally melted in your mouth it was simply stunning. The pot of red wine jus complemented it enormously and the Jerusalem artichokes were surprisingly tasty and being the first time I had tasted these I was surprised at how the savoury taste worked well with the wild flavours of the lamb and caramelised sweetness of the red onion relish.
We certainly enjoyed the innovative distinct flavours that the Millstone offered the dishes they prepare and serve certainly live up to there ethos of working in harmony together and also using fresh ,local produce where available but they also go the extra mile with the presentation of the food , we will definitely being returning to sample some more of the first class cuisine!
We decided to share a cheeseboard to finish our superb meal and it was a good choice, the board came served with grapes ,celery , homemade chutney and biscuits. The cheeses they served were Appleby’s Cheshire which is a clean and zingy Cheshire cheese,Perl Las Blue which is a Caws Cenarth organic soft blue cheese and last but not To advertise text ADVERT to: 01352 870 760

Graham Gouldman
at Manchester - Royal Northern College of Music on Thursday April 2, 2020 It has been an eventful few years for Graham Gouldman. Not only is 10cc enjoying increasing success around the world, but recognition of his solo achievements has grown too. Being invited by Ringo Starr to join his All Starr Band for tours of Europe and the USA in 2018, during which the band played three 10cc songs, elevated his profile yet further. Graham’s status as one of the world’s leading songwriters was acknowledged in 2014 with his induction into the Songwriter’s Hall
of Fame. When Graham formed what became Heart Full of Songs six years ago, it was purely for the pleasure of playing his songs in their simplest form, acoustically. The format became so popular that the acoustic four-piece undertook its first concert tour in April-May 2013. For lovers of perfectly-crafted music performed by the composer, a Heart Full of Songs concert is truly an exquisite experience coming Manchester Royal Northern College of Music on April 2.

HE best way to get the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients you need isn’t with a shopping spree at your local pharmacy. It’s from food. A good, balanced eating plan - filled with fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy, lots of fluids, healthier oils, good proteins, and whole grains should do the trick. Still, many older adults have a hard time sticking to a healthy diet. There could be many reasons, such as: l Lack of appetite l Trouble chewing l Fixed budgets l Trouble finding healthy foods Supplements might be an option. As part of a plan you and your doctor make, they can do just what their name says fill in the gaps in your diet. But they aren’t always the answer. If, after talking with your doctor, you decide you need a multivitamin, get a complete supplement, one that provides 100% of the recommended amounts of vitamins and minerals. Take extra care when you: l Take more than one supplement l Use a supplement in place of medication l Take them along with over-thecounter or prescription drugs
How Vitamins Can Help Older adults have different needs when it comes to vitamins and minerals. For example, the right amount of calcium can help fend off osteoporosis in women. Vitamin D, which helps your body take in and use calcium, also helps prevent bone loss and broken bones in older adults. It’s sometimes hard to know exactly what you need. But if you have a balanced diet, you’re probably doing OK. If you’re still concerned, ask your doctor if supplements might help. Before you take anything, talk with your doctor and read the labels.
What Might I Need? You can find these in foods or in the supplement aisle: Calcium. Known for the role it plays in

How to get your essential vitamins making your bones stronger, calcium is found in dairy products like milk and yoghurt. Women - especially those who are likely to have osteoporosis - may think about taking calcium supplements. Vitamin D. This nutrient, made by the body from sunshine, helps you take in calcium and phosphorus, so it’s key for healthy bones and teeth. Vitamin B12. This is important for keeping blood cells and nerve cells healthy. Ageing affects how well you take in and use B12 from foods, so if you’re over 50, it’s probably best to get your B12 from supplements and B12-fortified foods like cereals, as well as foods that are rich in it, like meat, low-fat dairy, and fish. B6. This helps your metabolism and immune system. You can get it in fortified cereals and soy products, as well as organ meats and whole grains.
Your body also needs these: Vitamin C. Found in oranges, red and green bell peppers, along with other vegetables and fruits, it may help protect you from cataracts, help wound healing and possibly lower your odds of having certain kinds of cancer. Magnesium. Among other things, it helps keep your blood pressure and blood sugar levels steady. It’s also good for your bones. You can get it from nuts, spinach and dairy products, and it’s used to fortify some breakfast cereals.
Here are some popular items you can find in the supplements aisle that you might talk with your doctor about: Probiotics. Gut health is also very important for your immune system. Some studies show that probiotics - living organisms like those found in yogurt - help prevent some types of diarrhoea and ease symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Coenzyme Q10. Also called coQ10, this is made naturally in your body and found in most body tissues. It may help your immune system work better. Fish oil. The British Heart Foundation recommends at least two servings a week of salmon and other fish with omega-3 fatty acids. In supplement form, though, no studies have shown that it protects against heart disease. Omega-3s also may help with symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.

HOUSE to Home new kitchen is a huge but worthwhile investment for any home. Looks and functionality wise, it will always add value to your property. But one thing you don’t want to do is forget the finer details. It’s often the most obvious things that we simply forget when designing a kitchen. Such as where the bins go or how accessible the fridge is when you’re cooking.
A
The primary function of a kitchen is to cook and prepare food, so it has to be highly functional. It’s therefore important to always start the design process by looking at how you use the space when preparing and cooking meal. But who says functional can’t be stunning? Thanks to smart design, these days our kitchens can be the best-dressed room in the house.
What NOT to do when designing a new kitchen
about getting the power supplies in the right place. Think about your workflow within the space. Where’s the tea point going to be? Is there another plug to hand, for the toaster. Is the microwave integrated or do you need to allocate worktop space for it.
7. Going over budget
Cooking, especially on the hob, can leave lingering smells that if not ventilated can drift throughout the home. While the smell of home-cooked food is delicious in the moment, you don’t want the rest of the house to smell and ruin the atmosphere.
Going over budget is one of the most common mistake seen in many a home renovation. We’ve all seen enough Grand Designs episodes to know only too well that project spends can increase dramatically. It’s often the forgotten factor that can add to the inflated costs. The easiest easy way to avoid over-spending is by creating an inventory list, ensuring it accounts for both furniture and contents.
4. Let rubbish pile up
8. Choosing a design that will date
3. Neglect ventilation
It sounds completely obviously but when it comes to the rubbish, because it’s the least glamorous part, bins are often
As tempting as it is to go for the latest trends, avoid choosing a design that is likely to date and be old news in only a few years. Kitchens are not cheap to replace - keep this in mind when designing your kitchen. Brightly coloured gloss cabinet doors that you can’t paint may seem like a great idea now, but will you love them a few years down the line? If you’re not sure stick to a timeless and classic choice.
What not to do when designing a kitchen 1. Forget counter space Planning every inch of useable space is a must. A very common mistake in kitchen design is not including enough counter space to work with. ‘Remember to include enough space to prepare meals, display all your appliances, wash up, and potentially space to eat and socialise if that is how you plan on using the kitchen, ‘ advises Hayley Simmons, Head of Merchandising for Magnet.
2. Underestimate how much storage you need The key to getting the most storage out of your kitchen is thinking of clever ways to integrate storage solutions into existing kitchen essentials. For example, magnetic panels help utilise unused wall space. For bulkier items, you should also consider pull out corner storage.
50
overlooked The best solution is integrated bins, or at least cupboards to conceal freestanding bins. Hiding not only the presence of waste, but also helping to contain odours. When the dedicated space isn’t allocated at planning stage the only viable option is a free-standing bin on display.
5. Skimp on lighting It’s important to get the lighting right. Prepping food will require more direct, brighter lighting than that of a dining area within the kitchen. Spotlights concealed under wall cabinets can be grouped according to tasks, and used with dimmer switches. You might also want to consider plinth lighting. strips that run along the base of your cabinet can provide a subtle light that will illuminate your kitchen after hours.
6. Leave out plugs and power It sounds obvious but you need to think

FITNESS LEXIBILITY is a vital component of fitness, which is often overlooked. Maintaining your muscles is important for keeping everyday activities easy and doable helping to prevent injury such as back pain, and for allowing your joints to work optimally and move through their greatest range of movement.
F
There are many ways to improve flexibility, from effective stretches that you can do as part of an easyto-follow home routine, to more structured flexibility workouts such as a yoga class.
Yoga and improved flexibility Yoga is at the top of the list when it comes to flexibility. Whatever your flexibility goal, there's something for everyone when it comes to yoga. A yoga style such as Yin or Hatha yoga may be a good first port-ofcall if flexibility is your focus. Yin yoga works at a different pace with an emphasis on really lengthening out, breathing and generally un-winding.
Keep your warm up dynamic Skipping your warm up is a no-no when it comes to staying flexible. Not only do you potentially increase the risk of injury, you're also missing out on a golden opportunity to improve flexibility.
Six ways to improve your flexibility Vary your stretching Both static and dynamic stretching have their place when it comes to your flexibility. Static stretching, where you hold the stretch, can be helpful in improving range of movement in a joint, but is best left to post-workout when muscles are warm. Pre-workout it's a good idea to include movement in your stretches. Rotational lunges, hugging
your knee to your chest and arm circles all work well to improve flexibility as you prepare the body for exercise.
Dancing works wonders for flexibility Not only does the extensive warm-up a dance classes offers boost flexibility, using muscles and joints in a variety of ways through dance movements will also help lengthen them out. Zumba is one of the most popular dancebased classes - all that shoulder-rolling and hip-swirling, not to mention the direction changes, will do wonders for your flexibility.
Pilates is great for posture While the main focus of Pilates is the core, moves such as The Saw, Spine Stretch and Neck Pull all help to improve flexibility everywhere from inner thighs and hips to upper back and neck. There's also a strong focus on posture in Pilates which can help to prevent muscles from becoming overworked and over tight in the first place.
Tai chi will do the trick for flexibility
Yoga: at the top of the list when it comes to improving your flexibility.
Including moves that recruit multiple muscle groups such as multi-directional lunges, bridges with an arm extension and a high-knee skip will help to improve mobility both during and after your workout.

Dubbed meditation in motion, not only is tai chi a fantastic way to relax, the continuous, flowing practice of moving from one posture to another, as well as the gentle, mobilising warm up, makes tai chi an excellent method of improving flexibility.

MOTORING The new VW Golf Mk8 W
ITHOUT getting too dramatic, the launch of a new VW Golf is a momentous thing. It’s a snapshot of where the industry is at right now in terms of engineering and tech and represents exactly what the middle majority of drivers wants. That’s because it’s designed to appeal to absolutely everyone; it is the blueprint of a normal hatchback, what you’d show aliens who want to know what a car is and the mid-point along the spectrum from cheap to luxurious.
slashed button count and more engine options than you could shake a stick at - petrol, diesel, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid ranging from 89-297bhp. The most economical offering a 17 per cent improvement in efficiency and, at the other end of the scale, are separate performance variants of each. The Golf’s engines start with traditional three- and four-cylinder petrols displacing 1.0- and 1.5-litres, and a 2.0-litre TDI with two power outputs. Then you get into the 1.5-litre mildhybrid petrol, which uses a 48v belt alternator and starter to coast and save fuel, plus a full plug-in hybrid.
Thing is though, if you believe the forecasters, this time around the Golf looks a bit old hat – it’s not an SUV for a start, and it’s no longer available as an EV. The latter being dutifully filled by the upcoming ID.3. Those are the things, we’re led to believe, that people want. So, what gives?
Electrified Golfs feature a DSG automatic gearbox as standard, which is now controlled by a cute Porsche-style electric switch in place of a lever, freeing up space in the centre console for storage. A six-speed manual is available on the other engines.
Well on the evidence in front of us while those are the emerging trends, what the vast majority of drivers wants is a practical hatchback with a more hightech interior and lower running costs than the alternatives – the Ford Focus, Kia Ceed or BMW 1 Series.
VW’s established trim structure (S, SE, SEL and sporty-looking R-Line) has been replaced by the German hierarchy – Golf, Life, Style and R-Line. All come with LED headlamps and tail lights – offering differing levels of matrix-style sophistication.
Is this new VW Golf that? Yes, in short, it is. You get a completely digital cockpit with big screens, a
6262
Anything else to know?
Inside, a pair of screens (10.25inch Virtual Cockpit and 10.0-inch infotainment unit) plus touch and swipe
pads replace the old car’s conventional dials and physical buttons. You also get Car2X as standard (more on this later) and VW’s new connectivity packages – WeConnect and WeConnect Plus.
What’s it like to drive? There’s a greater variation, depending on which model you buy this time around, because like a great many of its competitors (Ford Focus, MercedesBenz A-Class) the VW Golf now comes with one of two different rear axles. Golfs with less than 148bhp and front wheel drive get a torsion beam, those 148bhp and above or with all-wheel drive get a multilink set up. VW also promises a bit of a revolution in handling thanks to their ‘driving dynamics manager’, which basically makes the adaptive dampers and XDS brake-based torque vectoring (faster cars get an XDS Plus
Please mention Inside Flintshire Magazine when responding to advertisements
clutch-style diff) to talk to each other to avoid conflicting inputs.
What’s it like inside? In truth while VW calls the Golf’s interior a ‘digital revolution’ comparable to the launch of the first smartphone, it’s not a million miles away from an Audi A3 with Virtual Cockpit and an infotainment screen. It’s called Innovision, which is what the widescreen concept in the Touareg is called and, on that note, it does look more impressive than your standard two screen set up. The addition of ‘Hello Volkswagen’ voice control allows you to say things like ‘my feet are cold’ and because it uses clever digital microphones, the car knows to heat up the blowers driver’s side only.
Specifications: Price when new: from £20,000 On sale in the UK: Spring 2020 Engine: 1498cc turbocharged 4cyl, 148bhp, 184lb ft Transmission: Six-speed manual, front-wheel drive Performance: 8.5sec 0-62mph, 139mph Dimensions (length/width/height in mm): 4284/1789/1456mm
Stylish inside and out: the new VW Golf Mk8 Car2X is standard too and means all cars on the road will be able to talk to eachother regardless of make .
Still practical? Hugely! This latest generation is 26mm longer, 36mm lower and up to 10mm narrower, with an extra 16mm between the wheels. In short, it’ll still fit in your garage.Luggage space remains 380 litres with the seats up and a gallon larger at 1,237 litres with them down.
Verdict An even more mature version of what came before, with a higher-tech and nicer built interior, loads more engine choices and a bit more sparkle to the handling. This is peak Golf. First customer deliveries are in spring 2020, with the GTE arriving by the summer. All other models will find their way into showrooms in 2020 and 2021. To advertise text ADVERT to: 01352 870 760

GARDENS HO wouldn’t want a garden office pod? Sleek, beautiful and inspiring, office pods are the new garden buildings and using one to extend your living space has the advantage of providing a quiet space away from the hubbub of your main home.
W
Pods come in many forms, from outdoor office to guest bedroom, hobby room, play den or entertainment hub. Choose from curvaceous outbuildings in smart timber, organic armadillo-shaped cladded structures or rotating spheres. Pods for the garden tend not to require planning permission or foundations, making them speedy to install. Here we take a look at some our favourite outdoor pods:
Archipod garden pods The Archipod and its pleasingly larger cousin the Fatpod are built to order and make perfect garden offices. The curved plywood pods have a onemetre polycarbonate roof dome that maximises light and ventilation, a double-glazed stainless-steel porthole window and a top-hinged, gull-wing door. They are fully insulated and come with heating, lighting and power preinstalled. Electrics include spotlights, panel heater and a data outlet for phone lines. Garden Office pods include an ergonomic semi-circular desk. Archipods, from around £15,000; Fatpods, from around £22,800.
transportable. They’re delivered fully constructed and, as they need no foundations (mounted on four concrete blocks), take only around one hour to install. They include electrics, underfloor heating, controllable ventilation, double glazing and insulation. Choose from a catalogue of ready-made internal layouts that can be interchanged or slotted into the core product range. They are built in three sizes in a range of colour and finishes - or go bespoke for that personalised touch. Designs include the Guest Room, Garden Room, Xtraroom and Essential, Hybrid, Guest, Duo and Executive Offices.

Farmer’s Cottage Garden Pods at John Lewis These fabulous pod spheres are the equivalent of a covered lounger and all have circular seating and a round table. They can be used for work or study, dining or relaxing and can be rotated to make the most of shade on a hot day or to protect from wind on a chilly one. Made from laminated pine with UV protected polycarbonate tinted windows, they feature stainless-steel louvres around the windows to help deflect heat and stylish waterproof interiors. They are available in three core designs: the Seater, the Lounger and the Summer House. Prices start from £7,999 for the Seater rising to £18,995 for the Deluxe Summer House.
Garden Hideouts garden pods Garden Hideouts’ smart garden are double glazed and thermally insulated, and are made using top-grade plywood from Finland. The sustainable cedar wood exterior cladding can be oiled or left to the weather. They come with five interior fitting options: Freestyle, Office, Classic, Entertainment, Hobby, Extra Bedroom and Treatment. The decor features tongue-and-groove panelling, hardwearing flooring, upholstered

banquette seating that converts to a double bed, plus optional extras including solar panels and outdoor decking. Prices start from £14,950.
Armadilla garden pods Armadilla pods, it goes without saying, are beautiful. Prices range from £13,150 for the Armadilla Garden Room pod to £32,900 for the residential Xtraroom Deluxe pod. All are moveable,

IN THIS MONTH 1964: Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton marry for the first time
1989: Exxon Valdez disaster
1964
The Exxon Valdez oil spill was a manmade disaster that occurred when Exxon Valdez, an oil tanker owned by the Exxon Shipping Company, struck Bligh Reef, a well-known navigation hazard in Alaska’s Prince William Sound, spilling 11 million gallons of crude oil into the ocean on March 24, 1989.
On March 15, 1964, Elizabeth Taylor married Richard Burton for the first time. Taylor and Burton met on the set of the 1963 film Cleopatra. Taylor was at the time married to Eddie Fisher, her fourth husband, and her affair with Burton caused a worldwide scandal - it was also condemned by the Vatican. The famous Taylor-Burton diamond, which Burton gifted to her in 1969, was notoriously valued at one million dollars - proof that diamonds last forever, even if some marriages don’t.
1973
Nearly 30 years later, pockets of crude oil remain in some locations. After the spill, Exxon Valdez returned to service under a different name, operating for more than two decades as an oil tanker and ore carrier.
In 1974, the pair filed for divorce. In 1975, they married briefly again. But for well over a decade, they were the world’s most well-known - and talked-about couple.
1973: Pink Floyd release ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’ The eighth studio album by English rock band Pink Floyd, ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’ was released on March 1, 1973. One of the first ‘concept’ albums, its themes explored conflict, greed, time, death and mental illness.
1965: The first spacewalk
1980
The album received universal critical acclaim upon release, and has since been hailed by critics as one of the greatest albums of all time. The record reached number one on the UK and American charts, and has charted for over 900 weeks in total. With estimated sales of over 45 million copies, it is Pink Floyd’s best seller and one of the bestselling albums worldwide.
1959: Barbie makes her debut
On May 18, 1980, an earthquake struck below the north face of Mount St. Helens in Amerca’s Washington state, triggering the largest landslide in recorded history and a major volcanic eruption that scattered ash across a dozen states.
74
In March 1965, at the age of 30, Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov made the first spacewalk in history, beating his American rival Ed White on Gemini 4 by almost three months. Floating outside his tiny Voskhod 2 capsule for 10 exhilarating minutes, Leonov said later that he felt, “like a seagull with its wings outstretched, soaring high above the Earth.” In keeping with the secrecy of the Soviet space program, few people - not even his family - knew about the spacewalk ahead of time. Back home in Russia, when his fouryear-old daughter, Vika, saw him take his first steps in space, she hid her face in her hands and cried. “What is he doing? What is he doing?” she wailed. “Please tell Daddy to get back inside.”
1980: Mount St. Helens erupts
The sudden lateral blast - heard hundreds of miles away - removed 1,300 feet off the top of the volcano, sending shockwaves and pyroclastic flows across the surrounding landscape, flattening forests, melting snow and ice and generating massive mudflows. A total of 57 people lost their lives in the disaster.
It was the worst oil spill in American history until the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010. The Exxon Valdez oil slick covered 1,300 miles of coastline and killed hundreds of thousands of seabirds, otters, seals and whales.
On March 9,1959, the first Barbie doll went on display at the American Toy Fair in New York City.
1959
The first mass-produced toy doll with adult features, Barbie’s appearance was modelled on a doll named Lilli, based on a German comic strip character. Ruth Handler, co-founder of toy-makers Mattel, bought the rights to Lilli and made her own version, which she named after her daughter, Barbara. Throughout the next 60 years, despite countless make-overs, Barbie continues to generate huge sales.

TECH TALK F
OLLOWING on from last month’s feature, we examine how the introduction of the ‘human element’ will pose problems in the development of automated driving.
However, programming also comes with a risk. By making their behaviour predictable, autonomous cars could be vulnerable to manipulation by thirdparties. Byford explains: “Say the cars always react in the same way. That being the case, I could seriously injure people by walking out in front of a car on purpose, knowing that it wouldn’t be able to hit me.”
The human problem Although autonomous cars will need better, more connected infrastructure to function effectively, they still face a larger, more unpredictable factor – us. Humans present problems for autonomous cars as both drivers and pedestrians, and dealing with our unpredictable behaviour represents a significant challenge for the technology. The Google Car is one of the most experienced autonomous vehicles, and its interaction with human drivers has exposed one of driverless cars’ main weaknesses. The first injury involving the Google Car wasn’t due to a fault in its system, but human error. Revealed by Google last summer, an incident in was caused by a human driver’s failure to stop. While correctly waiting at traffic lights, Google’s selfdriving car was hit by an inattentive driver and, despite its sophisticated array of sensors, there was little it could do to avoid the incident. Luckily, the accident only resulted in whiplash for a few of the passengers, but it’s a reminder that autonomous cars are at risk when surrounded by human road users. Despite their sophisticated systems, self-driving cars currently have no plan B for human road users. Human drivers are able to interact with each other and make allowances, but also make countless, small mistakes when driving – mistakes to which current self-driving cars simply can’t adapt. Although there was little that could be done to avoid the Google Car’s latest accident, it’s a stark reminder of autonomous technology’s biggest hurdle.
Hacking Autonomous cars will pack in a greater range of systems than ever, but the increased tech will also make them more vulnerable to hackers. Although it may seem an issue for the future, car-hacking is already happening.
Automated motoring Part Two
a car, and presumably the car driver knows you’re there, they’re going to react in a certain way.” “If I walked out in front of a Google car travelling at 60mph, I have no real appreciation of how the vehicle will behave, so I’m effectively putting myself at a disadvantage.”
Fiat Chrysler had to recall 1.4 million Jeep Cherokees after it emerged they were vulnerable to hacking. Security experts were able to wirelessly control functions like acceleration, windscreen and radio, rendering the driver powerless. In an autonomous car – which relies entirely on computer systems – the effects could be devastating.
The road ahead As it stands, autonomous technology can be used for little more than parking or lane-changing. Connected technology is essential for driverless tec - until it’s here, it won’t be safe for human-operated and autonomous cars to co-exist. Until we upgrade our road infrastructure, driverless tech will still be at risk from unpredictable human road users.
Dealing with pedestrians Autonomous cars need to understand the way pedestrians behave, while also mimicking the behaviour they’d expect from a human driver. Says computer ethics commentator Ben Byford. “If you walk out in front of
