Yaris GRMN: a monster hot hatch
T
he Yaris GRMN is a runaway hit without ever turning a wheel. All 400 European examples have been sold, likewise the 300 that are being exported to Japan from Toyota’s factory in northern France. And what is this most desirable object? From your gran’s shopping runaround into a World Rally Championship (WRC) car and a monster hot hatch, the Yaris has been given the ultimate makeover with a £26,000 price to match. This tiny three-door Yaris GRMN musters 209bhp and 184lb ft of torque from its supercharged 1.8-litre engine and will accelerate from 0-60mph in 6.1sec and charge on to a top speed of 143mph. The three-door Yaris bodyshell is strengthened and braced across the suspension turrets and beneath the floor. It also gains a shiny black plastic grille, trims and spoiler, as well as a central exhaust outlet and a set of 17-inch alloys shod with Bridgestone Potenza tyres. It weighs just 1.13 tonnes. The 1.8-litre engine is a cracker. It is supercharged rather than turbocharged, for greater pulling power at low revs. It’s very similar to that used in the Lotus Elise; a 1.8-litre four-cylinder, four-valve unit with an Eaton Roots-type supercharger with its own separate cooling system - it only just fits under the bonnet. The gearbox is a strengthened six-speed manual driving the front wheels via a Torsen-type limited-slip differential to help prevent runaway. Special (and expensive) Sachs dampers and stiffer suspension all round make cornering a joy.
Similarly with the steering, where you dial in the amount of cornering and the front charges round, blisteringly quick, but without some of the finesse of, say, the old Fiesta ST200. The steering is light, precise but lacking in progression. You turn in the lock required like an aperture adjustment on a camera, the car gives nothing away. It’s more the chassis that is providing the necessary feedback through those amazing seats. Out there in the real world of speed limits and other road users, the Yaris is a joy; nippy, genuinely quick, responsive and a complete hoot. You barely need the close-ratio ‘box as the engine pulls so hard, and the ride is good, too. It crashes a bit over the more intrusive sleeping policemen, but handles bumps and potholes well. On a racing circuit, with gripper track tyres fitted, the Yaris GRMN feels fast and responsive. All the same, it is a bit of a buzz-bomb; the tyres are quite noisy and at 70mph in sixth the engine is spinning at about 2,800rpm, though you can hold a conversation and it doesn’t feel too strained.
Step inside and despite the special front seats and steering wheel from the GT86 sports car - it’s staggering just how standard this car is. It’s visibly a Yaris; nicely made and of good quality materials, but hardly exciting, especially for this amount of money. The racing seats are amazingly good, though; hugging, cosseting and supporting every inch of you, though they leave you rather a long way from the small steering wheel, which doesn’t have much adjustment. There’s a simple twodial instrument binnacle and a centre screen with good graphics for the satnav. Start it up and the engine booms with a fruity exhaust note as if the rear silencer has a hole in it. Slot first on the rubbery but precise gearlever and lift the light clutch and from the off this feels like a little thoroughbred, light and pawing-the-ground willing. The engine is extraordinary, the supercharger pulling from very low down and keeping the charge going right to the red line - you’re almost always in a higher gear than you need be. And while there isn’t much character in a supercharged engine, they’re effective; if anything this little car feels faster than its published figures.
8
With Ford holding the current World Rally Championship title and its previously giant-killing Fiesta ST due for replacement, taking them on at this game might seem as naive as a non-league football club lining up against Manchester City in the FA Cup. That doesn’t seem to be deterring Toyota over much, though, and while only time will tell in this year’s rally championship, the Yaris GRMN is a genuinely different, if expensive and rare, contender to the crown.

The facts
Toyota Yaris GRMN Tested: 1,978cc, supercharged four-cylinder petrol, sixspeed manual gearbox, front-wheel drive. Price/on sale: from £25,750. Power/torque: 206bhp@6,800rpm/184lb ft@4,800rpm Top speed: 143mph. Acceleration: 0-62mph in 6.4sec.
Fuel Economy: 37.7mpg/26.7mpg (EU Combined/ Urban). On test 33.2mpg.
CO2 emissions: 170g/km. VED: £500 first year, then £140. Verdict: What an amazing little car, a pocket rocket with
a difference, in part to do with its light weight but mostly to do with its supercharged engine. Great fun, fast and nippy with Toyota’s build quality and reliability.

Fitness Matters
Inject some fun into your fitness routine
xercise doesn’t have to feel like a chore. Inject something special into your fitness sessions with these six ways to make fitness fun.
so why not look for alternatives such as a fitness class or even join a team to play a specific sport. Consider your goals - whether it is to improve fitness, to compete, gain competence in a pursuit or just for fun. Try as many different ways of exercising as possible so that you find one that you are actually look forward to doing.
Add some variety to your activities
Carrying out the same exercise sessions each time will very quickly get boring, and boredom doesn’t do much for your motivation. The answer is very obvious, try and mix it up by adding some variety. By this it doesn’t mean that you have to change activity completely, it could be that you replace a long run with an interval or speed session. That said, it might be that what you really need is an entirely different activity - so why not swap a gym session for a salsa class or go for a swim instead of yet another run.
Get some new gear
Get social
One way of alleviating boredom is to exercise with a friend or a group. Try and take a friend with you on your next run, get them to join you at a fitness class, or just ask them to join you on a leisurely stroll. If you are lacking in the active friends department then joining a club is the best way to find some like-minded exercisers so you can give a boost to not only your fitness but also your social life.
Change the scene
Exercise doesn’t have to involve endless hours indoors in the gym. Make use of different locations such as exercising outdoors when the weather is good (or bad if you are brave). Go for a run off-road, enjoy a good long hike or bike ride, exercise in your own back garden, or if you can’t pull yourself away from the TV you could even exercise while watching your favourite TV shows. A change of scene acts like a distraction so you
won’t even notice how hard you’re working.
Do exercise which you actually enjoy Exercise can be a grind, especially when you are doing something that you really, really don’t like. If going to the gym and knocking out rep after rep is just not working for you then why not find an exercise method that really appeals to you. Exercise doesn’t have to be based around gym workout activities,
Working out in the same old gear isn’t going to do much for your motivation, so why not treat yourself to some new gear. A new training top, some new trainers or a nice piece of tech so you can monitor your progress can all add up to extra motivation as you’ll be keen to try out your new gear. You could also work on a reward basis so that you give yourself a treat in the form of some new kit whenever you achieve something towards your fitness or other goals.
Exercise to your favourite playlists Put together a playlist of your top tunes in order to give you the boost you need during a workout. Listening to music while you exercise is a great distraction and makes you less aware of the exertion you are under while exercising. A study from Brunel University identified that listening to music can boost exercise endurance as well as perceived enjoyment of it. In addition, music during a workout can reduce the perception of how hard you are working for moderate exercisers.

Tar Tunnel
Don’t miss one of the Gorge’s more curious tourist attractions - an eerie brick-lined tunnel dug into the hillside. Stand at the entrance to the tunnel and see the treacle-like bitumen oozing through gaps in the walls, accidentally struck by 18th century miners.
The Iron Bridge & Tollhouse
Stroll in historic footsteps on one of the world’s great bridges. This beautiful monument stands as one of the greatest symbols of where the Industrial Revolution started.
Enginuity Tar Tunnel
Museum of the Gorge
Start your visit absorbed in the detail of a massive model of the river valley and spot landmarks including the Iron Bridge in 1796. Take in stunning views of the Iron Bridge and River Severn from the quirky Lady Chapel and be transported through Ironbridge’s history with a fascinating short film. Get lost in the detail of a 12-metre model and catch a film explaining how this area became the most industrious place in the world.
Darby Houses
Take the short walk from Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron up the hill to the beautiful Darby Houses, former homes to the Darby family - Rosehill House, built in 1738, and Dale House, built in 1717. Sit on the hillside overlooking Coalbrookdale or wander around Rosehill House as if it’s 1850 and get a glimpse of an Industrialist’s life.

See inside this curious factory, abandoned by workers in 1957, and get an eerie glimpse into a world and industry that have long since passed. Broseley was the centre of clay tobacco pipe manufacturing and pipes made here were celebrated as being the very best. This museum re-opens on Saturday 19 May 2018.

at Wrexham William Aston Hall - Sunday June 24, 2018
To celebrate their 40th Anniversary, John Lydon’s Public Image Ltd (PiL) are pleased to announce The Public Image is Rotten: UK/Europe + Japan Tour, kicking off in Bristol on 30th May. The band’s last tour was in 2016 and it was regarded by many as the best performances the band have ever played. The forthcoming 32-date headline UK/Europe leg of the tour also takes in festival performances in United Kingdom, Holland and Poland, including a headline set at Camden Rocks Festival in London on Saturday 2nd June. The tour also includes an as yet to be announced very special London date. Japanese dates to be confirmed soon along with some further UK/ European dates. In 2015 the band released their 10th studio album ‘What The World Needs Now…’ which followed the huge critical success of 2012’s ‘This is PiL’, the band’s first album in 17 years. ‘What The World Needs Now’ peaked at number 29 in the official UK album charts and picked up fantastic acclaim from both press and public (The
album also peaked at number 3 in the official UK indie charts and number 4 in the official UK vinyl charts). ‘What The World Needs Now…’ was self-funded by PiL and released on their own label ‘PiL Official’ via Cargo UK Distribution. Widely regarded as one of the most innovative and influential bands of all time, PiL’s music and vision earned them 5 UK Top 20 singles and 5 UK Top 20 albums. With a shifting line-up and unique sound, John Lydon guided the band from their debut album ‘First Issue’ in 1978 through to 1992’s ‘That What Is Not’. After a 17 year hiatus, Lydon reactivated PiL in 2009 by taking them back on the road worldwide. John Lydon, Lu Edmonds, Scott Firth and Bruce Smith continue as PiL. They are the longest stable line-up in the band’s history. To be in with a chance of winning the tickets, answer the following question: “What does PiL stand for?” Send your answer to: reg@insideflintshiremagazine. co.uk with your full name, address and contact details.

Gardening tips for
May
May day, May day!! It might be a distress call to Marines, but to gardeners it’s the start of the loveliest month of the year, when leaves are fresh and green and spring is at its richest. All you need is a range of plants that will give you their best in this most generous of months. So if your patch is looking a little underwhelming, get down to your local garden centre or nursery now and give it a shot in the arm – or the beds and borders. THIS is the best month in the gardening calendar, so get out there and make the most of it…
Lawns
Provided the weather is mild and the grass is growing, applications of lawn fertilisers and weed killers can be made to established lawns. Depending on growth, regular mowings with the blades set at maximum height may be necessary, remembering to remove any dead foliage beforehand. This is the time to control fairy ring, also Yorkshire fog, couch weed and bindweed along with eradicating other weeds by teasing them out and cutting the roots. Continue to sow new lawns.
In the fruit garden
Surround strawberries with straw to protect fruit. Net them to keep birds off of the fruit. Hang pheromone traps in apple trees to reduce codling moth. Keep young fruit trees well watered whilst they are putting on rapid growth. Remove blossom and fruits from newly planted fruit trees to allow them to establish properly during their first year. Regularly check the centre of your gooseberry bushes for the green gooseberry sawfly caterpillars. They will quickly skeletonise the leaves if not removed.
Wild birds
Check for nesting birds before clipping hedges.
Spring pond care
Continue to plant up bog gardens. There are many beautiful plants left which enjoy a damp spot, such as Iris ensata ‘Katy Mendez’. Tidy and mulch with composted bark or garden compost.
Flowers & plants
If soil conditions are not too wet, dahlia tubers can be planted directly into the garden soil from early May onwards for late summer flowering. Gladioli can also be planted at this time directly outdoors for late flowering. Provided the risk of late frosts have passed, tender summer bedding plants can be planted outdoors towards the end of the month, but if weather conditions are still wet and cold delay planting until early next month. Taller perennials or those subjects which may tend to fall over will require the support of frames. The sowing of hardy annual flowers should now be completed; however, later sowings will result in the plants flowering later. You may find it worthwhile with some plants, such as fuchsias, to remove the very tip of a shoot which will then encourage them to branch out.
62
Pond tip Remove blanket weed by twirling around a rough stick. Skim off floating weeds such as duckweed with a net. Leave weeds on the pond side for 24 hours to allow trapped creatures to return to the water before adding to the compost heap.

Health Matters Eat your way to a clear complexion hile face washes and creams are sometimes effective when it comes to battling acne, you can actually help your situation even more by eating certain foods that are great for clear skin.
Chia seeds
Omega-3 fatty acids help maintain cell membranes by protecting the skin and providing it with moisture. Chia seeds and walnuts are rich in these fatty acids (great choices if you’re a vegetarian), as are oily fish.
Oily fish like salmon or tuna
Eating fish provides your body with biotin, a B vitamin that produces fatty acids and metabolizes amino acids (the building blocks of protein). A deficiency of biotin can cause, among other things, scaly skin - which no one wants.
noting that vitamin E may also protect the skin from damage caused by the sun’s rays.
Sunflower seeds
These little seeds provide an excellent source of vitamin E and help protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals in the environment and in the body (free radicals in excess can harm body cells, including skin cells).
Complex carbs
Sweet potatoes
Eating a produce-rich diet provides your body with lots of water, keeping your skin and other cells adequately hydrated. And loading up on colorful, deeply-colored fruits and vegetables - especially those rich in vitamin A, like sweet potatoes, carrots or spinach - has been shown to enhance skin color.
Processed foods and white flour can increase inflammation and cause acne flare-ups. Replace pasta and white rice with complex carbs like barley, quinoa, beans, and brown rice - foods that are all lower on the glycemic index.
Orange juice
Almonds
Packed with vitamin E, almonds can help you maintain healthy skin. While they can’t replace suntan lotion, it’s worth
Although juice often gets a bad rap, OJ provides fluids to keep you hydrated and Vitamin C, which works as an antioxidant to protect skin and other cells from damage caused by free radicals in the environment and in the body. Vitamin C also helps create collagen, the body’s main structural protein.
