Bonfire night
Top tips for staying safe on November 5 ● Never return to a firework once it has been lit. ● Don’t put fireworks in pockets and never throw them. ● Direct any rocket fireworks well away from spectators. ● Never use paraffin or petrol on a bonfire. ● Make sure that the fire is out and surroundings are made safe before leaving.
Sparkler safety
Sparklers are often viewed as being harmless but they burn at fierce temperatures, equivalent to a welding torch.
Despite annual safety warnings, firework celebrations still end in painful injuries for too many people, including very young children. Yet fireworks can be great fun for families, not just around November 5 (Bonfire Night/Guy Fawkes Night), but also Diwali, New Year’s Eve and Chinese New Year. Injury figures support the advice that the safest place to enjoy fireworks is at a large public display - far fewer people are injured here than at smaller family or private parties. But if you’ll be having a firework party at home, you can make the occasion fun and safe for everyone by following the Firework Code, as well as some sparkler and bonfire safety tips.
Firework Code
Only adults should deal with setting up firework displays, the lighting of fireworks and the safe disposal of fireworks once they have been used. Children and young people should watch and enjoy fireworks at a safe distance.
Follow these top 10 tips for a safer fireworks party:
● Plan your firework display to make it safe and enjoyable. ● Keep fireworks in a closed box and use them one at a time. ● Read and follow the instructions on each firework using a torch if necessary. ● Light the firework at arm’s length with a taper and stand well back. ● Keep naked flames, including cigarettes, away from fireworks. ● Never return to a firework once it has been lit. ● Don’t put fireworks in pockets and never throw them. ● Direct any rocket fireworks well away from spectators. ● Never use paraffin or petrol on a bonfire. ● Make sure that the fire is out and surroundings are made safe before leaving.
6
Follow these top tips for sparkler safety:
● It is recommnded that sparklers are not given to under-5s. ● Make sure everyone handling sparklers wears gloves. ● Hold sparklers at arm’s length while being lit. ● Don’t wave sparklers about close to other people. ● Never hold a baby in your arms while you are holding a sparkler. ● When the sparkler has finished put it in a bucket of cold water.
Bonfire safety ● One person should be responsible for the bonfire and children should be supervised. ● Choose a site away from wooden fences, sheds and any areas where children will be playing. ● Never pour petrol, paraffin or meths on to a fire - it’s safer to use fire lighters to prevent flare-ups. ● Keep a bucket of water handy in case of an accident ● Avoid loose clothing and tie back long hair. ● After the party, pour water on the fire, rather than leaving it to burn out.

Europe’s best Christmas markets
O
riginating in Germany, Christmas markets have spread throughout Europe and now form a staple part of the festive season. Not only can you find special gifts for loved ones, but there’s ample opportunity to feast on local delicacies, socialise with local people and explore new sites. With Christmas looming, we’ve rounded up some of the best of European destinations renowned for Christmas markets while being steeped in history, beautiful architecture and diverse culture.
Berlin
When: Late November - 31 December 2018
Berlin is one of the best cities for getting into the Christmas spirit, as it turns into a wonderful blaze of fairy lights and roasted chestnuts around the Christmas period. One of the best markets to visit has to be the WeihnachtsZauber at Gendarmenmarkt, which is located in the centre of the city, surrounded by three of Berlin’s most impressive buildings: the Deutsche Dom, the Konzerthaus and the Franzozische Friedrichstadtkirche. The market has a cosy atmosphere with hundreds of stalls and a giant Christmas tree, with daily live performances taking place for entertainment. With an array of amazing products on sale, what really stands out is the food! You can find everything from French specialties to German and Austrian cuisine.
Where to stay:
With such a variety of sights found across the city, you can choose to stay anywhere and be within easy reach of the main attractions. Berlin Tegel Airport is found to the north if you want quick links after landing, while Mitte is close to both the river and the popular Berlin Zoo. Everything from the five-star Ritz to affordable alternatives are found in Mitte, while numerous apartments and hotels can be booked overlooking the River Spree.
Prague
When: 1 December 2018 - 6 January 2019
Prague during the festive season is like a fairy tale, with the Old Town twinkling in shades of red and gold, with a giant Christmas tree and the sound of classical music humming. The main markets are centred in the Old Town square and Wenceslas Square – just five minutes apart. Luckily, these markets are open every day including Christmas Day itself. As well as market stalls selling all manner of toys, sweets, candles, clothes and trinkets, you will sometimes see children’s choirs and a set-up depicting Bethlehem. Food wise, the smell of roasting ham, garlic flatbread with cheese and sweet cakes are enough to entice you to hang around and try it all. Finish off with a steamy cup of hot chocolate or popular Czech beer. Delicious!
Where to stay:
You can pick from the large amount of hotel options whether you want to be in the bustling city centre or in one of the quieter suburbs. Either way you’ll be able to explore most of the city on foot, which is the best place to see everything from.

Budapest
Vienna
The Hungarian capital is home to two major Christmas markets and they are both a hub of festive activity through November, December and January. Since 1998, the most beautiful, oldest and internationally acclaimed Budapest Christmas fair on Vorosmarty Square has attracted visitors from around the world.
Dating back to the Middle Ages, Vienna’s Christmas markets are now an age-old tradition. There are several that take place, including Christmas Village Belvedere Palace that is set against the backdrop of the baroque worldfamous residence, and the ever-popular Christmas and New Year’s market at Schönbrunn Palace.
When: November 23, 2018 - January 1, 2019
When: 17th November - 26th December 2018
The second is on St. Stephen’s Square by St. Stephen’s Basilica, which this year features a Christmas laser projection on the Basilica. Both markets have a vast selection of artisan and handmade goods, traditional Hungarian crafts, food stalls and even run special guided tours with wine tasting.
One of the most-visited though is the Viennese Christmas Dream on Rathausplatz in front of the City Hall. The spectacular market welcomes shoppers eager for a festive treat. A mix of old traditions, family-friendly entertainment and atmospheric music make the market a truly unmissable event in the heart of Vienna.
Staying in the inner city of Budapest, called Belvaros, you’ll be close to the main shops, restaurants and in easy walking distance from many of the historic sites. For a touch of history, stay in Varnegyed which is full of medieval buildings and is also home to the Hungarian National Gallery.
Many people choose to stay in the Innere Stadt area of the city, otherwise known as the 1st district, mainly because here you’ll find many of the city’s entertainment spots. But, if you choose to go a little further out, you can pick from beautiful areas like the leafy Leopoldstadt district, or the old-world ambience of Landstrasse. And you can still get into the centre of the city with ease.

Christmas markets 2018
Heading towards the most wonderful time of the year – it’s time to wrap up warm, indulge with steaming hot gluhwein and get searching for those perfect Christmas gifts for your loved ones. Where better to stock up on festive cheer than one of the hundreds of amazing Christmas markets to be found popping up all over the country? There are tons of stalls offering up trinkets and treasures for you to wrap under the tree, not to mention the wealth of food pop-ups and mulled wine stands if you need to replenish your energy levels during your Christmas shopping. Christmas Markets go back quite far in our traditions and indeed were very popular until Oliver Cromwell banned the non religious celebration of Christmas, after which they fizzled out. There were of course many markets in Britain during the Victorian era, selling Christmas related products and foodstuffs in the run-up to the festivities. Popularity has grown again in recent years, and now almost every major city has a Christmas Market of some kind.
Llandudno 15th - 18th November
Visitors are welcomed to this beautiful Victorian seaside resort and their traditional Christmas Fayre, where you will enjoy cultural entertainment and stroll around more than 165 stalls right in the centre of town. In 2015 they doubled the size of the event, now making it one of the largest Christmas Fayre’s in Wales; attracting more than 35,000 visitors over the 4 days.
24 24
The fayre gives you an opportunity to experience a variety of products not found in the normal high streets and national retail brands, including quality products from Wales and the rest of the UK and around the world. You can enjoy local Welsh Cultures together with friendly hospitality and entertainment.
Chester16th November – 22nd January
You’re in for a real festive treat this in Chester this Christmas, with more than 70 wooden chalets offering lots of festive goodies and gifts - all of which will be wrapped around the Christmas tree in the Town Hall Square in the centre of the city. Oh, and don’t forget to sample the food and drink on offer - it really is something to shout about! There’s also a Real Ale Bar so if you fancy a tipple you’re in luck - hey, it’s Christmas! Open seven days a week, plenty of time to plan a visit.
Lincoln Thursday 6th December - Sunday 9th December 2018
A contemporary cathedral city with over 2,000 years of history, Lincoln is the perfect place to visit over the festive period. Take a trip back through time and stroll along the cobbles the cultural quarter of the city. The medieval square between the impressive Norman castle and magnificent gothic cathedral is the perfect backdrop for the Christmas Market. Lincoln Christmas Market has developed dramatically since it began with just 11 stalls. The Christmas Market gives visitors and residents a truly festive experience, with a traditional, high quality event for all the family.
A little further afi eld…
If you fancy a trip up to Scotland, Edinburgh has not one, but three Christmas markets for 2017. There’s enough entertainment to keep the whole family occupied all day. There’s Santa Land for the wee bairns, with face painting and Christmas crafts, a European market boasting ‘gastronomic surprises’ and a Scottish market, featuring the best local seafood, Scottish brewed beer and traditional jewellery. Head from The Mound along Princes Street Gardens Terrace and around the Scott Monument.
November 16th – January 5th, 2018
The Frankfurt Christmas Market 2018 in Birmingham city centre is the biggest German market outside of the country itself. With hundreds of stalls in Victoria and Chamberlain square selling filled pretzels, Berlin doughnuts, traditional bier handmade Christmas decorations, you won’t leave empty handed – or with an empty stomach.
November 15th – December 23th, 2018
Another fantastic shopping city, Bath (pictured above) hosts one of the UK’s prettiest Christmas markets, with 200 chalets lining the streets around the Roman Baths and Bath Abbey. Most of the stalls are run by local business owners, meaning you can pick up handmade wooden toys, artisan candles and local cheese before you head to the Apres Ski Bar for a mulled wine.
November 22rd – December 9th, 2018
Manchester
9th November – 22th December Arguably the largest and Best Christmas Market in the country, Manchester Christmas Markets is the ideal destination for a festive group outing. This year could be the biggest and best ever, with some 300 traders offer mouth-watering international food, drinks and delicately crafted Yuletide gifts in the heart of this buzzing city. Last year the market stretched to 10
sites, including a traditional German market on St Ann’s Square, a world market on Brazennose Street and a French market on King Street; attracting millions of visitors. The main market hub will be at Albert Square in front of Manchester Town hall, with stalls on Exchange Street, Exchange Square, in the Corn Exchange, on New Cathedral Street and up Market Street, while Cathedral Gardens is home to a familyfriendly area with a skating rink.

November Films The Grinch
Based on Dr. Seuss’ beloved holiday classic, The Grinch tells the story of a cynical grump who goes on a mission to steal Christmas, only to have his heart changed by a young girl’s generous holiday spirit. Benedict Cumberbatch lends his voice to the infamous Grinch, who lives a solitary life inside a cave on Mt. Crumpet with only his loyal dog, Max, for company. With a cave rigged with inventions
Siberia
The film tells the story of an American diamond merchant (Keanu Reeves), who travels to Russia to sell rare blue diamonds of questionable origin. As the deal begins to collapse he falls into an obsessive and passionate relationship with a Russian cafe owner (Ularu) in a small Siberian town Mirny. As their relationship builds, so does the treacherous world of
and contraptions for his day-to-day needs, the Grinch only sees his neighbours in Whoville when he runs out of food. Each year at Christmas they disrupt his tranquil solitude with their increasingly bigger, brighter, and louder celebrations.

The White Bear, Mancot immediately, it had old fashioned favourites such as bread and butter pudding, sticky toffee pudding, a selection of cheesecakes and sundaes, with this in mind we decided to share a starter to save room for a dessert.
This month we visited The White Bear which you will find on Mancot lane, Mancot, we were pleasantly surprised from the outside as it’s a lovely double fronted white washed traditional building that we never even realised existed. The inside was just as welcoming and as we had not booked a table we headed straight to the bar to order drinks, We asked for a Hendricks gin and a Coors light, Hendricks being my favourite drink I watched eagerly whilst my gin was poured, unfortunately it was poured into a pint glass so we politely asked if they had any nicer glasses such as the balloon glass or a high ball glass, which to be honest the waitress
The menu was a good variety of traditional pub classics but what struck us instantly was the brilliant value for money. The service was excellent and we were well looked after by our waitress, we had decided on Nachos to share and they arrived promptly and looked delicious. They were layered with Chilli Con Carne, grated cheese and jalapeño peppers and the portion was more than enough to share, if the nachos were anything to go by we were looking forward to the rest of our meal. For the main course we opted for a 12oz rump steak and the Lamb pie, again on arrival they looked lovely and the potions were extremely generous.
rectified immediately. We were shown to a free table and the huge blackboard of homemade desserts caught our eye
The Lamb pie was served in an individual dish with a puff pastry top with homemade chunky chips and peas, the filling had large chunks of slow cooked lamb, carrots and onions smothered in delicious rich minty
gravy. Real hearty home cooked food.
The 12oz steak was cooked to perfection and was served with a mountain of crispy onion rings, fresh grilled tomato and grilled mushrooms, I had asked for a jacket potato instead of chips and this was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside again no complaints whatsoever and we thoroughly enjoyed our starter and main course. Unfortunately we were bursting at the seams from the generous portion sizes, so agreed to share one of the home made cheesecakes. After much deliberation as all the desserts sounded amazing I had the final choice and went for the White Chocolate and Strawberry cheesecake which was a superb choice, it had a good thick buttery base and then a mouth watering creamy middle topped with a strawberry and white chocolate compote, fresh strawberries and huge chunks of white chocolate to finish. If you’re after good value, home cooked food with hearty portions and amazing homemade desserts! The White Bear is perfect! No frills just good home style cooking.

Have you ever considered FOSTERING? NEWFOCAS
Therapeutic Fostering Agency was established in 2000 and are based in Flintshire. We are an Independent Fostering Agency working with the Local Authorities to help look after children in care. Our Foster Carers live around the North Wales, Wirral and Chester areas and are a dedicated team of compassionate and empathetic people. NEWFOCAS Foster Carers get to learn all about childhood development, the effects of early childhood trauma and many other interesting and helpful topics to enhance their role as Foster Carers, and help them understand what difficulties their foster child may face whilst growing up. NEWFOCAS also have Respite Carers who work as part of the team around the child and help support the Full Time Carers by acting as extended family and look after foster children for two nights per month. Foster children get to go out with Sessional Support Carers to do therapeutic activities, which may be sport, art or education focused depending on the needs the child. This helps children develop new relationships and skills. The NEWFOCAS Foster Carers are the backbone of the agency and are highly valued members of the team. They dedicate their lives and open up their homes to help vulnerable children, therefore, they receive up to four
48
hundred and ninety ďŹ ve pounds per week, from NEWFOCAS, for each child they have placed in their homes. The government also value foster carers and they provide extra tax relief, which is very generous, and means most of our foster carers don’t have to pay any tax. More details can be found at www.gov.uk/fostercarers/help-withthe-cost-of-fostering NEWFOCAS is a very small agency with a staff group who have extensive knowledge and experience when dealing with all of the different challenges fostering brings. Our highly trained and experienced staff group, which consists of Therapeutic Social Workers, Supervising Social Workers and Administration staff who work hard to support the foster carers through whatever challenges they face. Unlike larger fostering agencies, we are small enough to know all of our foster carers and children on an individual basis. NEWFOCAS staff are always there for their foster carers through thick and thin, as you can see from the text message (above) sent to one of our Supervising Social Workers. The NEWFOCAS Therapeutic Social Workers also support the foster carers by working directly with the foster children to help them feel safe and secure in themselves, which in turn helps them achieve their goals.
Here at NEWFOCAS we pride ourselves on the support we give to each and every foster carer and foster child, and on the outcomes we achieve of the foster Children placed with us. Over the years NEWFOCAS foster children have achieved some fantastic outcomes for themselves, such as university places, full time employment and soldiers serving in the armed forces. The foster children we look after at present are also achieving fantastic outcomes such as sporting achievements at National level, passing driving tests and achieving good grades in school. Nevertheless, fostering is a very demanding career and foster children often have complex behaviours which can be challenging. This is why it is so important that as a foster
carer you get the best support you can, so that you don’t feel on your own when dealing with issues or concerns. We would like more people to foster for us, as lots of foster children in this area need foster homes. NEWFOCAS are looking for a wide variety of people, so, if you are in a couple, single, older or a same sex couple, as long as you are ďŹ t to foster, we would love to hear from you. We match all children carefully with each family so that the foster child has the best chance of a stable and happy childhood. If you know anyone that has what it takes to foster please tell them about us, or if you could foster yourself then please contact us for more information.

The new BMW X5: Smooth and ruthlessly effective
T
he BMW X5 has always been a bit of a Marmite car – either you love the raised driving position and enhanced offroad ability, or lament the fact BMW doesn’t just make sleek saloons with singing straight sixes like the good old days.
Now in its fourth generation, the largest of Munich’s SUVs also plays a crucial role in getting customers with high aspirations through the door of the dealership, even if they drive away in a smaller model that offers most of the lifestyle image at a much more reasonable price. That means this new model needs to offer even more than before to keep customers out of an Audi Q7, Range Rover Sport, or indeed the cheaper cars that sit below them in the line-up.
Engine
From top to the bottom you’ll be buying a straight six – the most powerful is the quad turbo M50d, then there’s a 40i petrol (a real highlight for reasons we’ll explain later) and the projected best-selling 30d diesel. That’s because it’s ruthlessly effective and reasonably cheap to run. In operation it’s smooth and quiet until you stretch it, but there’s enough midrange torque that you shouldn’t ever experience its more vocal upper reaches. The petrol 40i is faster and much more refined, plus sounds more attractive at higher revs. Of course it’s also more
52
expensive to run, but as it’s barely a handful of tenths slower than the M50d and substantially cheaper to buy, we reckon it’s a tempting offer unless you do huge monthly miles.
The drive
Perhaps predictably a strong suit – because the BMW X5 is a great steer, as it turns out. It’s not the ultimate driving machine you’d instantly choose for picking apart a challenging road given its tall and heavy nature, but it manages to do all the muddy stuff you could ever need while still entertaining on the road. Air suspension (standard on UK cars) isolates potholes with ease and resists the pitter-patteriness often associated with such a set up admirably. It’ll be interesting to test it fully in the UK on our chopped up tarmac, however. Body movement is kept neat and tidy by active antiroll bars – there’s very little weight transfer to worry about in a series of corners. That means the all-wheel drive system can really shine, subtly shuffling power around and working in harmony with the rear-wheel steering to give the X5 confidence-inspiring stability. It always feels like there’s a bit more grip and a bit more lock to use if you bowl into a corner with abandon. Where the X5 falls behind saloon and estate rivals is that it doesn’t get exponentially more fun to drive as you approach its limits. You’re best driving it at three-quarters-effort where it’s happy to provide uncanny thrills – any faster and things get uncomfortable.

Interior
BMW’s usual climate control panel of many buttons has been ripped out and replaced by a much more modern and decluttered centre console. You get knurled switches (like a Bentley!) and a crystalline gearshift (like a Volvo!) which brighten up and otherwise featureless fascia. In the back you’ll find plenty of space for adults thanks to a low transmission tunnel and the 650-litre boot is usefully square, with minimal intrusion.
The latter is the same dual 12.3-inch screen set up from the upcoming 8-Series and it’s very pleasing to the eye, but not quite as forward facing as the system you’ll find in a Mercedes-Benz, which looks like one long screen. The new X5 comes with all manner of cool driver assistance and connectivity tech – you can now programme your sat-nav from you smartphone and it’ll warn you about traffic and other delays on route to your next appointment even when you’re not sat in the car. You can also use your phone as the car key using the NFC chip, which BMW says is harder to hack than the standard key. Plus, you can send access to up to four friends, and because their BMW profile can be stored in the cloud, your X5 will automatically set itself up for them when they drive it.
Specifications
Equipment
There are two trim choices but BMW says 80% of customers will ignore xLine and pick M Sport – gaining 20inch alloys, an M Sport bodykit and badges. The standard car is surprisingly well-equipped – automatic gearbox, all-wheel drive, air suspension, and BMW Live Cockpit Professional.

Five ways to eat more and lose weight
D
iets don’t always have to be focused on eating less. You can actually eat more and still lose weight so long as you are eating the right kinds of things. So what should you be eating more of in order to aid your weight loss?
1 Eat breakfast
It’s often said that you shouldn’t skip breakfast and that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Well from a weight loss perspective we’d probably agree with both. A recent study suggested a link between skipping breakfast and a propensity to consume more calories throughout the rest of the day. So what should you eat for breakfast if you are looking to lose weight? Another recent study looked at the breakfast option for those already on a reduced-calorie weight loss diet. Half of the participants had two eggs for breakfast while the other half were given bagels. Those who consumed the eggs lost 65 per cent more than those who ate the bagels and also reported increased energy levels than the bagel eaters. It suggested that weight loss could potentially be enhanced by a food such as eggs which has a high satiety level (and therefore reduced food cravings), especially when eaten for breakfast.
2 Eat more fruit
If you are looking to control your calorie intake then eating more fruit could be key. Generally, because most fruit is relatively low in calories you can consume it without seriously depleting your daily calorie allowance. Eating fruit before a meal will fill you enough to prevent overindulging at actual meal times. Fruit is the perfect snack option, and being full of fibre it helps keep you fuller for longer. Fibre can also help reduce the absorption of fat. Particularly low calorie fruit examples include apples, cranberries, apricots, grapefruit, strawberries and watermelon.
3 Eat more protein to promote muscle mass
The more muscle mass you possess the greater the number of calories you will burn, therefore eating the right kinds of food, especially those high in protein, can promote muscle growth and help burn calories more efficiently. If you are exercising as part of a weight loss programme then protein, particularly post-exercise, becomes of extra importance for muscle recovery. Good snacks to eat before exercise include bananas and peanut butter on toast. After a workout good recovery snacks include turkey or tuna or hummus.
4 Eat more whole grains
Carbs get a bad press, but that’s often because people are eating the wrong ones, namely refined carbohydrates. Instead do yourself and your weight loss a favour and go for good healthy, whole-grain foods. These are digested at a slow rate with slow release energy meaning that you stay full for longer and are therefore less likely to reach for unhealthy snacks for a quick energy fix. Do yourself and your weight loss a favour and go for good healthy, whole-grain foods. Good sources of whole grains include barley, brown rice, porridge oats and quinoa.
5 Eat more grains
Your mother was right when she told you to eat your greens, and if weight loss is one of your main concerns then tuck into the green stuff and you’ll be onto a winner. It seems that foods such dark leafy greens such as kale, spinach, romaine lettuce plus others such as asparagus and broccoli contain folate, a B vitamin which can encourage weight loss. It is thought that folate helps to steady blood insulin levels, encouraging the body to burn fat rather than store it. Other good sources of folate include citrus foods, beans, peas, lentils, seeds and nuts, so you don’t have to restrict your folate intake to just greens.

According to Nationwide Building Society, a modern extension on the ground floor can increase your property’s value by around 5%, while adding a bedroom to create a three-bed house will add about 12% to the potential asking price. When planning an extension, design rooms to be as big as possible, but without sacrificing too much of the garden or outdoor area – this can make a property feel out of balance and deter buyers. Check with the local planning office to see if you need permission to carry out building work. All home improvements on this scale must also comply with Building Regulations and be inspected and passed at key stages.
Plan a loft conversion
A loft conversion is the most cost-effective way to gain extra living space and you should be able to do it if your home was built before 1975 and/or the loft has a maximum headroom of 2.3m. Work on converting an attic costs from around £20,000 – although on average a dormer loft conversion with a double bedroom and en-suite bathroom is more likely to be in the region of £3545k – and takes about six to 12 weeks to complete. This configuration is the most popular option and, according to Nationwide Building Society, it could add an estimated 21% to the value of your home. Remember, take professional advice before you start to plan your loft conversion because it must meet building and fire regulations.

1605 1963: The Kennedy assassination
On the 22nd November, US President John F. Kennedy was assassinated while riding in an open car motorcade with his wife Jacqueline Kennedy in Dallas, Texas. He was fatally wounded by gunshots to the head and was dead before he reached hospital. Lee Harvey Oswald was found guilty by three government investigations, but numerous conspiracy theories abound. Many believe that more than 3 shots were fired, indicating more than one gunman. Oswald was killed by Jack Ruby two days after the assassination.
1922: Tutankhamun’s tomb
The steps leading to the tomb of Tutankhamun, an Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th dynasty, were discovered by the English archeologist Howard Carter on November 4th, 1922. Tutankhamun became pharaoh when he was 8 or 9 years old and reigned for only 10 years (1333 BC – 1324 BC). His body was extensively damaged by Carter’s team, who were more interested in the jewellery and amulets found on the body. They chopped off his arms and
1893 legs, cut his torso in half and severed the head before using hot knives to remove his burial mask. X-rays taken in the 1960s suggest that the young pharaoh died from gangrene after breaking his left leg during a fall.
1893: Votes for women
On 28th November 1893, women voted for the first time in the world in elections in a self-governing country. In most democracies – notably Britain and the United States – women did not win the right to vote until after the First World War, but in September 1893 New Zealand’s parliament passed a bill allowing women the vote in the next general election. New Zealand’s suffrage campaign was led by Kate Sheppard (pictured), who galvanised support from women around the country for a series of petitions to the government.
1989: Berlin Wall falls
After nearly 30 years of division, Berliners were allowed to cross freely across the East/West German border on November 9, 1989. Two days earlier, Gunter Schabowski, the East German Minister of
1922 Propaganda, made an announcement on live television declaring that East Germans were now free to leave the country, without permission, at any point along the 28-mile border, including the crossing-points through the wall in Berlin. Tens of thousands of East Germans flooded the checkpoints, surprising the border guards (who hadn’t been warned of the announcement).
1605: The Gunpowder Plot On the 5th November 1605, Roman Catholic conspirator Guy Fawkes was arrested in a cellar underneath the Houses of Parliament, where he was attempting to detonate 36 barrels (2500 kg) of gunpowder. It was a failed assassination attempt – upstairs in the Houses of Parliament it was the state opening ceremony, attended by King James I, his family and most of the Protestant aristocracy. For his part in the plot, Fawkes was sentenced to death by being hung, drawn and quartered, but managed to escape this punishment – at the last minute he jumped down from the scaffold and broke his neck.

Timely tips for November In the flower garden
l There’s still time to plant daffodil bulbs and other spring flowering bulbs for a magnificent start to next years display. l Plant tulip bulbs now to prevent Tulip Fire infection. l Plant up a terracotta pot of hyacinth bulbs for a simple but stunning display next spring. l Gather up fallen leaves from around the base of rose bushes which suffered from blackspot or rust this summer, to reduce the chance of infection next year. l Continue to lift dahlia tubers, begonias and gladiolus corms to store dry over the winter months. Remove the dead foliage before storing. l Cut back the yellowing foliage of herbaceous perennials, and lift and divide overcrowded clumps to maintain their vigour. l Start to plant bare-root roses - they can be planted any time between now and March. l Plant heathers, grasses and trailing ivy in pots for winter colour. l Plant out spring bedding displays of pansies, violas and primulas..
In the vegetable garden l Lift parsnips after the first frosts when their flavour will have sweetened. l Now is a great time to prepare a perennial vegetable bed which can be planted up with rhubarb crowns and asparagus crowns.
l Now is an ideal time to invest in mushroom kits. It’s surprisingly easy to grow your own mushrooms. l If you have access to fresh manure, now is the time to spread it across the surface of your vegetable beds to rot down over winter. l Build a raised bed to take the bending out of vegetable growing. l Stake top-heavy brassicas and draw up some soil around the base of the stem to prevent wind rocking the plant and causing damage to the roots.
Lawn Care
l If you haven’t already aerated your lawn, there’s still time to do it before winter sets in. You can use either a lawn aerator or simply insert a garden fork at regular intervals and lean it back slightly to let air in. l Continue to clear fallen leaves off the lawn to keep it healthy. l Remember to set your lawn mower to a higher cut-height for winter. l Now your beds are clear, try edging your lawn. Lawn edging creates a neat and tidy appearance and makes maintenance easier. l Try gathering your leaves on to the lawn and mow them with a rotary mower that has a collection box on the back. They will rot down quicker in your compost bins.
Now is the time to plant your tulip, daffodil and hyacinth bulbs. 74

Fitness Matters Combating seasonal sadness H
ave you noticed your mood change with the change in weather and shorter daylight hours? You’re not alone - a study by the Weather Channel and You Gov found that over 57% of adults say their overall mood is worse in the winter compared to the summer months. As the the nights begin drawing in, many gyms notice a decline in active members as many opt to go home to their pyjamas instead. However, one of the most effective treatments for combating seasonal affective disorder (S.A.D.) is exercise - this is because working out releases endorphins and serotonin (mood elevating chemicals) into the body. Understandably it’s much harder to motivate yourself in colder weather, but you can boost your motivation by eating a balanced diet, rich in fruit, vegetables, proteins and grains, ensuring you drink plenty of water (the recommended daily amount is 6-8 glasses or 2.5 litres) and get enough sleep. It is estimatred that you should aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. This can have a profound effect on your mood, and the release of feel-good chemicals also improves blood ow to the brain, clearing away toxins and oxygenating the brain cells, helping you think more clearly.
