Stay safe this Halloween After your little princesses and mini cowboys are all dressed and their trick or treat bags are firmly in hand, it’s time to go over some trick or treat safety tips so you and your children will have an enjoyable and safe Halloween experience.

1. Go during safe trick or treat times

You don’t have to wait until it is pitch-black outside. The ideal time is after an early dinner and just before dusk when you can keep better track of your children and are able to see others you may encounter on the street. Besides, the first person there gets the best sweets!

2. Steer clear of masks

While masks are a fun part of many costumes, wearing one can sometimes impair a child’s vision. By using face paint, it is easier for your child to see where they are going and they won’t have to lift their mask when speaking to someone. If your child absolutely must wear a mask, make sure it’s a snug fit, is ventilated and has large enough eyeholes so they can see all around them.

3. Be visible

Try to choose costumes that are brightly coloured so that they are easier to see in the dark. If they really want a dark costume, apply some reflective strips. Glow sticks or glow necklaces also aid visibility.

4. Never go alone

9. Say “No!”

If your children are old enough to go out in a group without you, be sure to designate a time for their return. Teach them to say “no” if a stranger offers them a lift in their car or to take them to a Halloween Party.

10. Eat the sweets when you get home

Make sure your little goblins know that trick or treating is for gathering sweets, not eating them as they receive them. If they’re tempted to have a taste before you’ve had a chance to inspect it, pack a goody bag with some of your own sweets so they have something to snack on if they can’t wait until they get home.

Trick or treat checklist Costume check Flashlight (with extra batteries) Reflector strips or glow stick Trick or treating route Return home and/or meet-up time Emergency identification info Sticking plasters Bottled water Extra house key Mobile phone

Make sure children are accompanied by an adult at all times. Discreetly adding some identification information to their costume or on a bracelet will help if they happen to wander off.

5. Walking tips

Be sure that your children understand simple traffic rules, such as stopping and looking both ways before crossing the road. Inform your children that road safety rules still apply.

6. Only knock on doors that you know

Encourage your children to only call on homes where they know the inhabitants. If a home is dark or has no Halloween decorations, this is one to avoid!

7. Don’t go inside

Remind your little ones that they should never enter anybody’s home while trick-or-treating. If the homeowner is persistent, inform them to simply turn and walk away.

8. Stay on track

It might be tempting to take a short cut through an alley or back lane, but that can be unsafe. Stay on streets and in areas that are well lit with plenty of people around.

Plas Teg, Flintshire, North Wales’ Most Haunted House Plas Teg is a Jacobean country house located in Flintshire, between the towns of Mold and Wrexham. One of the most haunted houses in Wales, this mansion was built in 1610 by Welsh politician Sir John Trevor I (1563 – 1630), for his family and him to live in. It served as a home for the Trevor family until the death of Sir Trevor’s wife, Lady Margaret Trevor, and the outbreak of the English Civil War,

10

which saw the family leave the home and move to one of their many other properties. The property was tenanted out during this time. The Trevor’s resided here again until 1930, when it was sold to the War Office and used as housing for soldiers during the Second World War. It was during this time that plas teg hall slipped into a period of decay up until the 1950’s, when it was put forward for demolition. If it wasn’t for a public outcry it would have gone ahead. Instead, a descendant of the Trevor family, Patrick Trevor-Roper, came forward and took over the property. With a

little help from the Historic Buildings Council, he partially restored the building. He leased out the house until 1977, when it was Mr and Mrs William Llewelyn that purchased it. Mr and Mrs Llewelyn only used the ground floor of the house, resulting in the rest of the house becoming little more than a ruin. However, fortunes soon picked up for plas teg, when Cornelia Bay bought the house for £75,000 in 1986. With help from the CADW (Historic Environment division of the Welsh Government) in the form of £199,000 and another £211,000 from Cornelia’s own pocket, plas

teg underwent a £400,000 renovation project. Just 10 months after buying the house in 1986, Cornelia opened Plas Teg house to the public, and it still is to this day. Plas Teg featured in Channel 4’s Country House Rescue in 2011.

Plas Teg Ghosts Plas Teg House is reportedly one of the most haunted buildings in all of Wales. There is said to be no fewer than 15 ghosts lurking in its rooms and hallways. As well as serving as a residence for over 400 years, it’s also believed to have been used as a local court, where people were often tried and hung. It was also said to have been used as a sanatorium, although no records have been found to support this. With such a varied history stretching back so far, the fact that there are a number of ghost stories at Plas Teg is of little surprise.

Plas Teg Ghost Stories It is said the ghost of Sir John Trevor I’s daughter, Dorothy haunts the A541 that runs past Plas Teg. The story goes, she fell in love with a local farmer’s son named Iorwerth. Her father knew of her feelings for Iorwerth and disapproved, forbidding her from seeing him. Determined to follow her heart, she planned to elope with him,

taking her jewels with her that she had previously buried near the well in anticipation for when the night came to run away. When the night came, Dorothy ran out to the well to retrieve her jewellery box, but due to the darkness she slipped and fell down the well to her death. It is believed that it is her ghost that people have been seeing for years on the A541. Could she be running to meet her love Iorwerth? Is she the woman in white? Her body was discovered 2 months later, however, her jewels were missing. Iorwerth was so distraught at her death and feared being accused of her murder, he hung himself. His ghost is also believed to haunt the grounds, looking for his beloved Dorothy. On one occasion during the late 1800’s early 1900’s, a gardener is reported to have felt hands grabbing his shoulder trying to pull him down the well. He struggled free and looked down at the dark water beneath and saw nothing. Throughout the house, the sound of loud wailing is often heard. Could this be the ghost of John Trevor V who died sometime in the mid 18th Century? He apparently discovered his wife’s affair, and her death came shortly after, believed to be by the hands of John. Drunk and guilt ridden, he drove his carriage at high speed through

the grounds of Plas Teg, hitting a tree and severely injuring himself. Due to the injuries he sustained, he died a slow and agonising death. A young 16 year old named Elizabeth Trevor-Roper also died aged 16 at Plas Teg in 1815. Reportedly, two men had fallen for her but she only loved one of them. The one who she refused, in a fit of jealous rage, killed the man she loved, then chased Elizabeth all the way back to the house. Terrified he might kill her next, there was a struggle, and Elizabeth either slipped or was pushed down the well, and ultimately drowned. Is it their ghosts that are reportedly seen running through the corridor? A woman in white clutching jewels pursued by a man with a bloody wound to his shoulder…

Other Reports Throughout the house people have reported being touched/prodded, and even pushed by an unseen entity. Another common occurrence is the sudden emotional changes in different areas of the house. People are often overcome with anger, sadness, despair, and happiness. The sounds of giggling, sobbing, knocking, whispering, talking, and footsteps are also regular occurrences throughout.

Recipe of the month

Halloween cupcakes Method

1. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Line two 12-hole

cupcake tins with cases. Beat the butter and sugar until the mixture is creamy. Beat in the chocolate and the eggs until combined, then stir in the flour and baking powder, cocoa powder, milk and food colouring, if using. Spoon the mixture evenly between the cupcake cases, levelling the tops. 2. Bake for 20 mins or until the cakes are risen and springy to the touch. Cool for 5 mins in the tin, then lift out onto a wire rack to cool completely. 3. To make the buttercream, beat the butter until soft, then stir in the icing sugar a little at a time. Beat in the vanilla and some black food colouring, then transfer to a piping bag fitted with a plain nozzle.

4. For the cat face, pipe the black buttercream in an even swirl onto the cupcake and smooth with a palette knife. Pipe two ears by making a blob for each and pulling the icing bag upwards to a point. Add two eyes on each with Smarties and use the black icing pen to paint a pupil onto each. Add a triangle nose made of pink fondant icing and create whiskers with sweets.

5. For the monster faces, cut circles of green and blue fondant to fit the tops of the cupcake and fix them in place with a little buttercream. Add eyes, noses and mouths made of sweets or use icing eyes (see tip, below). For skeletons, cut out shapes with white fondant and fix in place with the buttercream.

Ingredients

200g butter, softened | 300g golden caster sugar | 200g dark chocolate, melted 2 eggs | 250g self raising flour | ¼ tsp baking powder | mixed with 100ml boiling water | 50g cocoa powder | 200ml milk | 1-2 tsp black food colouring (optional).

For the buttercream 300g unsalted butter, softened | 500g icing sugar | 1 tsp vanilla extract | black food colouring.

For the decorations

Pack of Smarties | black icing pen | 1 pack mixed coloured fondant icing (pink, green, blue and white) | liquorice and strawberry laces and other sweets such as jelly fangs and liquorice allsorts | icing eyes (see tip)

16

How to make icing eyes

To make icing eyes, mix up a batch of fondant icing and pipe rounded blobs, for the eyeballs, onto baking parchment. Leave to dry. Then, either add pupils to the eyes with a small brush and black colouring, or make up a batch of black icing and pipe dots on top.

The best ski-in/ski-out resorts

W

hat could be better than stepping out of a ski chalet or hotel and sliding off down the mountain, returning right to the door at the end of the day? No need to walk a long way wearing heavy boots while carrying skis or board, or chivvy everyone onto a crowded bus. While many ski resorts have some slope-side places to stay, it’s usually those that are purposebuilt high in the mountains for easy access to the snow that can truly be considered ski-in/ski-out.

Best for reliable snow Val Thorens, France

Purpose-built Val Thorens is not only the highest resort in the giant Trois Vallées ski area, but the highest in Europe. Its lofty altitude means that doorstep skiing and snowboarding with guaranteed snow cover is possible from November to May. The terrain suits everyone from beginner to expert, but the vast majority of visitors are intermediate, for whom Val Thorens is a dream. The resort also has a world-class terrain park, the setting for international events.

Stay: Chalet Olivier and the adjoining Chalet Catherine form one of only a handful of stand-alone chalets in the resort. Both are ski-in/ski-out, sleep 12 and 18 people respectively and are run and catered separately, with a shared sauna on the ground floor. Both Olivier and Catherine start at £1,089 from Ski Total.

Best for mixed groups

Snowmass, Colorado, USA

Even the French would be impressed by the way this purpose-built resort has been developed, with lodgings and Snowmass Village Mall’s cluster of restaurants and shops lining the home runs down. There’s also a Base Village area at the foot of the slopes. Much of the lodging is ski-in/ski-out; some accommodation involves

24

a walk to the snow, but it’s rarely very far. Snowmass is easily the biggest of the Aspen area’s four mountains, with superb terrain for all standards. It’s also the best for intermediates. The High Alpine double chairlift was replaced by a fast quad for the 2015/16 season, allowing much quicker access to steep terrain for experts such as the Hanging Valley. In March 2017, Aspen hosted the FIS Ski World Cup Finals, the first time in 20 years that the event has been held in America. Stay: The Westin Snowmass has a prime spot on the home slope, close to Snowmass Village Mall. It offers an extensive range of dining options, a spa, kids’ club and stylish, modern rooms. From £2,296, room only, with Ski Independence.

Best for unabashed luxury Lech, Austria

Few resorts have a more exclusive image than Lech – famous patrons over the years have included Princess Diana, the Jordanian royal family and Princess Caroline of Monaco. The car-free, ski-in/ski-out satellite of Oberlech above the village, once the summer domain of shepherds and cowherds, has grown almost into a resort in its own right. The huts have been replaced by expensive hotels, served by an intricate network of tunnels beneath the piste. The pistes are best suited to intermediates, and the sunny side of the mountain above and below Oberlech is largely given over to a network of flattering blue runs. Oberlech’s hotels house some award-winning restaurants. Griggeler Stuba in the Burg Vital is the place to go for a gastronomic feast – the restaurant has three Gault Millau toques. Diners choose a surprise menu, a tasting menu or pick just one course.

Stay: Oberlech’s Hotel Goldener Berg has four restaurants and two sun terraces with panoramic views, as well as a swimming pool, spa, gym and outdoor hot tub. From £1,600 with Scott Dunn.

Please mention Inside Flintshire Magazine when responding to advertisements

Best for bargain hunters

Best for the quiet life

For the first 40 of its 50-year existence, Les Menuires was the ugly duckling of European ski resorts. But these days, it has matured to become a key base in the Trois Vallées alongside Courchevel, Méribel and Val Thorens.

Obertauern is an ideal destination for those in search of easy intermediate runs in a relaxed atmosphere, far from the razzmatazz of a major resort. It also has two features that separate it quite distinctly from the Austrian pack – snow security and ski-in/ski-out convenience.

Les Menuires, France

While the local slopes are great for all standards, many of them are south-facing and quickly lose their cover in hot spring sun. However, lift links to the rest of the Trois Vallées are fast and efficient, including to nearby Val Thorens, the highest resort in Europe. Les Menuires also has the 2,804m summit of Pointe de La Masse, offering superb possibilities both on and off piste, with runs that remain uncrowded even during peak season weeks. Stay: Ski-in/ski-out Chalet Delfina in Les Bruyères sleeps up to 14 people and has its own hot tub. It can be booked sole occupancy or by the room, or together with other nearby chalets for a group of up to 75 people. The adjacent gondola goes straight up to the 2,850m Mont de la Chambre overlooking the Méribel valley. From £659 with Ski Amis, excluding flights and transfers.

Best for families Trysil, Norway

With 75km of slopes above two bases, Høyfjellssenter and Turistsenter, Trysil is the largest ski resort in Norway. One of the main attractions is that the slopes here are less crowded than in the main Alpine resorts – something particularly worth bearing in mind if needing to travel at peak holiday times. The majority of the hotels are ski-in/ ski-out, which is great news for beginners and families.

Obertauern, Austria

Obertauern is Austria’s only attempt at a purpose-built destination, and from most hotels here it’s possible to step out each morning on to the piste and slide all the way back home in the afternoon. At either end of the season, when other Austrian resorts are struggling to open or to remain open, Obertauern is half-buried in the white stuff. Its ski area encompasses seven peaks on both sides of the road leading up to the pass, with lifts going from 1,630m up to a top altitude of 2,526m. Snow cover is virtually guaranteed from the end of November until early May. Stay: Hotel Petersbühel is a four-star family-run ski-in/skiout hotel, with 81 attractive rooms and a 300m² spa that includes an outdoor snow cave. The restaurant features a weekly Italian buffet, and after a day on the slopes there’s an array of complimentary strudels and cakes. From £915 with Crystal.

Although Trysil is fairly laid back, there are several good spots for late-afternoon live music sessions on the mountain, and a decent selection of bars and restaurants at the two village bases. At Turistsenteret, Sindrestua is an unpretentious, friendly coffee shop-cum-bar that encourages après for the whole family.

Stay: The ski-in/ski-out Radisson Blu Mountain Hotel in Høyfjellssenter sits below a network of green runs and has two on-site restaurants, a bakery and a well-equipped spa. From £697, b&b, with Crystal.

Superb terrain: Snowmass, Colorado

The sunny side of the mountain: Lech, Austria

According to Nationwide Building Society, a modern extension on the ground floor can increase your property’s value by around 5%, while adding a bedroom to create a three-bed house will add about 12% to the potential asking price. When planning an extension, design rooms to be as big as possible, but without sacrificing too much of the garden or outdoor area – this can make a property feel out of balance and deter buyers. Check with the local planning office to see if you need permission to carry out building work. All home improvements on this scale must also comply with Building Regulations and be inspected and passed at key stages.

Plan a loft conversion

A loft conversion is the most cost-effective way to gain extra living space and you should be able to do it if your home was built before 1975 and/or the loft has a maximum headroom of 2.3m. Work on converting an attic costs from around £20,000 – although on average a dormer loft conversion with a double bedroom and en-suite bathroom is more likely to be in the region of £3545k – and takes about six to 12 weeks to complete. This configuration is the most popular option and, according to Nationwide Building Society, it could add an estimated 21% to the value of your home. Remember, take professional advice before you start to plan your loft conversion because it must meet building and fire regulations.

The Hardwick Estate is open every day, for countryside walks with picturesque views, woodland family play trails, locally sourced gifts in the shop and delicious seasonal menus in the restaurant. Health Matters

Top five foods for a flat belly

H

aving a well-balanced diet is a vital part in getting rid of any fat around your stomach, and introducing new food groups into your everyday life is simpler than you think. Here are five key foods that you should include in your flat belly diet.

1 Whole grains

Introducing more whole grains into your diet is an effective way of dropping those unwanted pounds. Whole grains are a fantastic lowfat source of slow-release energy, keeping you going throughout the day. And, thanks to their high levels of fibre, your digestive system will become healthier and more regulated. Whole grains also have the added benefit of stopping fat from being stored around the stomach, by lowering the insulin and cortisol (the stress hormone) within your body. To stick to a flat stomach diet, opt for grains that are still in their natural form, such as oats, spelt, brown rice and buckwheat.

2 Water or other still drinks

One of the major elements that could be hampering your efforts in achieving that flat belly could be a lack of water in your diet. When you don’t have enough fluids in your body, it can make you feel bloated and often worsen the problem. Drinking plenty of water can help leave your stomach looking flatter by curbing your hunger, flushing any toxins through your body, improving your digestive system and getting rid of any fluid retention.

3 Berries

Berries could be your secret weapon in achieving your flat belly goals. Research has found that going for red or blue coloured fruit (think cherries, blueberries, blackberries and red grapes) can help you lose that unwanted belly fat. The chemicals

which give the fruit their brightlycoloured appearance can also burn stomach fat and help you get the abdominal area you’re after.

4 Flax seeds

Full of monounsaturated fats (MUFAs), flax seeds are the perfect seed to introduce into your flat stomach diet. The MUFAs found in flax seeds will help to bring down your body fat and lower your cholesterol levels – something that the saturated fats found in junk foods do not do. They are easy to bring into your daily routine – a tablespoon of ground flax seeds will go perfectly with your lunchtime salad, mixed into a flat stomach smoothie or sprinkled over your morning cereal.

5 Yoghurt

Low in both fat and calories, yoghurt could be the ideal food to add to your flat stomach diet. It can help improve your digestive health, and combat against any potential bloating and excessive gas through the probiotics it contains – these active cultures stimulate the growth of good bacteria in your stomach. A recent study revealed that participants who ate 18 ounces of yoghurt per day (as well as reducing their overall calorie intake) lost, on average, 81 per cent more belly fat compared to those who opted to diet without eating yoghurt.

Renault Trafic: Combining utility and slickness

I

n third-generation form, the Renault Trafic is bigger and better finished than before. There’s a choice of two lengths and two roof heights for the panel vans and the cabins have been designed to function as mobile offices. The powerplants on offer are either a 1.6 turbodiesel or a 1.6 twin turbodiesel, both engines available with two different power outputs. Renault’s Trafic is one of those vehicles that has quietly inveigled itself into an almost invisible ubiquity. They’re everywhere, but are such a part of the automotive landscape that they barely register. In 2015, this third generation model waded into the fray against rivals like the Volkswagen Transporter and the Ford Transit Custom, not to mention its design siblings, the Vauxhall Vivaro, the Fiat Talento and the Nissan NV300.

Driving experience

Renault passenger vehicles have embraced the idea of the downsized turbocharged engine to boost efficiency and now the commercials follow suit. The engines that power the Trafic are both relatively small 1.6-litre turbodiesel units but punch above their weight. Most buyers will be drawn to the single turbo 1.6-litre unit, available in either dCi 90 or dCi 115 power outputs. In order to match the sort of grunt Mercedes can deliver with its rival Vito,

66

Renault also debuts the Energy dCi 120 and 140 engines. Powered by two turbochargers working together, these engines combine excellent performance with decent fuel economy. From just 1,500rpm, the Energy dCi 120 cranks out a hefty peak torque of 320Nm, while the dCi 140 variant delivers 340Nm so there’s plenty of muscle even if you’re loaded to the roof. Renault claims that these power and torque figures are what you would have previously expected from a 2.0-litre engine in this class and that view is borne out by the figures. The driving position, though not as lofty as in some models, nevertheless affords a decent view up the road. You get big door mirrors to help with manoeuvring and tried and tested transmissions.

Design and build

True, there’s only so much a van designer can do with a rectangular box with a wheel at each corner, but there’s clearly been a concerted effort to distinguish the Trafic from the workaday LCV norm. Renault has really gone to work on the cabin. Gone are the expanses of uninspiring grey plastics, with higher-end versions getting a chromed console surround, along with a chromed gear lever knob and chrome-finished front speaker trims, plus lidded dashboard stowage and Java upholstery. Much improved seats offer more shape and higher density foam padding. The front bench seat incorporates lateral strengthening for both the seat cushions and passenger seat backs. Comfort is further enhanced by the inclusion of an armrest built into the door panel.

Please mention Inside Flintshire Magazine when responding to advertisements

Compared with the previous generation Trafic II, the driver’s seat cushion has been lowered by 36mm, while the seat back is more reclined in order to get closer to the sort of driving position associated with MPVs. Combined with the height- and reach-adjustable steering wheel, the number of ways the seat can be adjusted (height, fore-aft and seat back angle) enables the driver to find the most comfortable position. Thanks to a pump system, the height of the driving position can be adjusted through a range of 60mm.

Practicalities and costs

The Trafic panel van is offered in two lengths. The standard L1 configuration measures 4,998mm from stem to stern, with the L2 breaking the tape at 5,398mm. There are also two roof heights to choose from. Compared to its predecessor, you get an extra 100mm interior load length and cargo capacity ranges between 5.2 and 8.6 cubic metres. Renault has also been smart about accommodating even longer loads too, with a flap that extends through the bulkhead and below the front seats to allow up to 2.95m long items. Need even more length? Then simply open a secondary flap that extends into the front footwell, allowing up to 3.2m long items to be taken on board. Of course, you could always just opt for the longer L2 model with its cavernous 4.15m load length. The cabin has been designed with everyday practicality in mind with a market-best total stowage capacity of 90-litres. There are 14 bins, trays and

cubbies of different forms and sizes. They range from 0.2 to 54-litres and are specially designed to house the everyday items employed by business users, including water bottles, cans, cups, cell phones, tablets, notebooks, pens, hard hats, boxes, and so on. There’s even a cradle mount for a tablet located above the radio. This suits tablets with screen sizes of between 4.8 and 10.6 inches, so a 9.7 inch iPad or a 10.1 inch Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 will easily fit, as well as smaller units like the Google Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire. Fuel economy is also rated as best in class, the entrylevel Trafic registering 49.5mpg on the combined cycle.

Summary

The van market is changing - and this Renault Trafic has needed to change with it: it has. We especially like the careful touches: the load-through facility in the full-steel bulkhead that lets you poke long items into the cab. The ‘Eco Mode’ driving option that makes it easy to lower your running costs. The Mobile Office package with its folding front seat. The way you can mount your smartphone or tablet on the dashboard to work with Renault’s clever R&GO app. And the wide-angle passenger sunvisor mirror that helps when reversing. Though we’ve seen some of these things before in other LCV products, they’ve been delivered here with a greater level of thought and thoroughness that operators will like.

Gardening tips

Timely tips for autumn In the flower garden

● Now that colder weather is approaching, protect half-hardy plants with fleece or bring into a frost-free greenhouse ● Lift Dahlia tubers, Begonia tubers and Gladiolus corms to store dry over the winter months. Remove the dead foliage before storing them. ● Plant daffodil bulbs, tulip bulbs and Allium bulbs for a glorious spring display. Dot them through borders or naturalise them in grass. Click here for more information on planting spring bulbs. ● Plant bareroot ornamental trees and shrubs. ● Plant out any perennials or biennials you’ve grown from seed this year. ● Autumn is the ideal time to plant Clematis plants. ● Plant spring bedding such as wallflowers, Bellis, Primulas and winter pansies for a fantastic spring display. ● There is still time to direct sow hardy annuals. ● Clear up fallen rose leaves to prevent diseases such as black spot from over-wintering - don’t compost the leaves. ● After tidying borders, mulch with bark chips, well rotted manure, leaf mould or spent mushroom compost to insulate plant roots for the winter and keep weed growth in check.

In the vegetable garden ● Finish harvesting beans and peas. When beans and peas finish cropping simply cut the plant away at ground level, leaving the roots in the soil. These crops fix nitrogen which is slowly released into the soil as the roots break down. ● If you plan to grow beans next year, start preparing the site by digging trenches and filling with manure or kitchen waste.

74

● Harvest squashes and pumpkins before the first frosts. They will quickly turn mushy if left outside! ● When you harvest your cabbages, leave the root in the ground and make a cut across the stem to encourage a flush of smaller leaves. ● Any plants with green tomatoes or peppers remaining can be hung upside down indoors to ripen. ● Protect autumn cauliflower heads from frost by wrapping the outer leaves around them and securing with string. Alternatively use a cloche or fleece. ● Continue to plant autumn garlic bulbs now for a bumper crop next summer. ● Plant autumn onion sets for cropping next summer. ● Reuse old grow bags by cutting away the top and sowing late salad crops. Cropping can be extended into winter if grown under glass, cloches or polytunnels. ● Start planting autumn onion sets.

Lawn Care

● Clear up fallen leaves regularly to allow light to the grass. ● A last mowing can be made this month before leaving your lawn for the winter. ● Recut any lawn edges if needed. Try installing lawn edging to make future maintenance easier. ● Finish off essential lawn maintenance to avoid waterlogging and compaction over winter. Try aerating your lawn with a garden fork, raking thatch from the surface and repairing dead patches. ● Fresh turf can still be laid now. Autumn rains should ensure the turf settles successfully.

Fitness Matters Best exercises for a flat stomach H

ands up if you want a toned stomach? Well, with a little hard work you can get the stomach of your dreams by doing these exercises.

1 The plank

To complete this exercise lie flat on your stomach and place your forearms on the floor. Then, press down with your forearms and push your self up – using your toes as support - until your head, neck, back and legs are all in a straight line. This is an excellent flat stomach exercise because it strengthens your inner core muscles, upper and lower abdominal muscles and burns more calories in comparison to other abs exercises, such as sit ups. This is because to do the plank you have to engage the muscles in your legs, arms and back too.

2 Boat pose

If you want to try a challenging flat stomach exercise you should introduce the boat pose to your workout. Doing this yoga pose regularly will quickly help you reach your goal of a flat stomach. To begin, sit on the floor with bent knees. Lean back slightly and then bring your legs up and straighten them until your body forms a V shape. Your arms should be stretched out and parallel to one another. Keep your palms facing inwards. Remember to engage your abs muscles whilst doing this exercise and keep your stomach relaxed and flat. This is a fantastic abs exercise because it targets and strengthens your core muscles and improves balance.

3 Bicycle crunch

This exercise is a must if you want a flat stomach. To begin the Bicycle crunch, lie on your back. Place your palms beneath your head and lift your legs until they are positioned at a 90-degree angle. Keeping your right hand on your head, twist your body, bringing your right elbow towards

your left knee. Alternate your limbs, bringing your left elbow toward your right knee. To get maximum results this exercise should be executed slowly. The bicycle crunch is a great exercise to include in your flat stomach workout as research has shown that the exercise works all of the major abdominal muscles.

4 Skipping

As well as doing abs exercises, if you want a flat stomach you should try to incorporate some cardiovascular exercises into your workout. Although running, cycling and swimming are all excellent forms of cardiovascular training, skipping is useful in this instance because it can be performed indoors with your other abs exercises. Skipping for fitness requires the correct technique: you only need to lift your feet a few centimetres off the ground each time the rope passes and ensure your heels don’t touch the floor. Also, make sure you turn the rope with your wrists, rather than using your whole arms. Skipping works your transverse abdominis, rectus abdominis and your inner and outer obliques. It is essential to include cardiovascular training in your flat stomach workout, as it will help you burn calories and lose weight alongside helping you to tone your abs.

For this exercise, you will need a non-bouncing medicine ball. Using both hands, lift your medicine ball above your head and place your feet shoulder-width apart. Your knees should be slightly bent. Now, explosively bring the ball down, bending at the waist and throw it at the floor. Try to get into a rhythm so that you can catch the ball once it has hit the floor. During this exercise you should not lose your balance or posture. If you do, it might be because the medicine ball you are using is too heavy. The medicine ball slam is a total body exercise that strengthens your core stability and will help you to tone up your stomach.
