Holiday Review September

Silba

On board Viking Star, the luxury ship that will change your mind about cruising “Being in a ship is being in a jail – with the chance of being drowned,” wrote Samuel Johnson. The good doctor doth protest too much, I mused over a martini in the soaring atrium of a ship cruising south through the mid-Atlantic. In front of me a trio of classical musicians performed Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos. Soon I would head to Italian restaurant Manfredi’s for truffled risotto and a marinated rib eye. Any drowning would have been done in the restaurant’s epic wine list. It was the second evening of a four-night cruise from New York City to San Juan, Puerto Rico. My only other voyage was a decade ago, from New York to the Bahamas on a 3,000-passenger vessel the size of an aircraft carrier. Viking Star was instantly different. In 2015 Viking began operating ocean cruises in the Mediterranean, Adriatic and Baltic, unveiling Star as the first in what will be a five-ship ocean fleet

We embarked from Manhattan Cruise Terminal on the Hudson River. I took a table at the Aquavit Terrace by the stern (adjacent to a glass-encased infinity swimming pool), a front-on view of Midtown’s skyscrapers glittering to light as dusk fell. Two hours later we sailed out, passing within 200 yards of the Statue of Liberty. An elderly Jewish couple from Los Angeles gazed at Ellis Island lit up in the bay. “My grandfather arrived there 70 years ago,” said the man, misty-eyed. We drank to that. A mid-sized ship, Star has the sleek pointed bow of a yacht, wooden decks and a 360-degree second-deck “promenade” with a full-loop jogging track. Interiors channel Viking’s Nordic roots. On board are several hundred works of art – paintings, photographs, sculptures – numbered as in a gallery. You can download a Viking Art Guide app for a narrated tour. The second day the sea was choppy and I spent most it in the Explorer’s Lounge, a two-storey area at the bow with floor-to-ceiling windows. Its upper floor is an immaculately curated museum and library full of ancient artefacts (Viking axes and arrowheads), old seafarers’ maps and telescopes.

The third, Sky, will be christened under the Midnight Sun in Tromsø, Norway, in July. The cruise I was on heralded the next step in Viking’s ocean expansion: Star will spend European winters island-hopping the Caribbean, with other sailings to Belize, Brazil and the Amazon. The NYC-San Juan leg formed part of a “repositioning” to the Caribbean, which meant I was one of 650 guests in a ship that can take 930. Still, it had all the trappings of an official voyage, including star chefs, guest lecturers and Swedish masseuses. And Viking’s founder and chairman, Norwegian Torstein Hagen, came along for the ride.

The NYC-San Juan leg formed part of a “repositioning” to the Caribbean Hundreds of hardcover books by and about great explorers (Cook, Amundsen, Heyerdahl) line the shelves. It felt like a private collection: when I opened a copy of Wilfred Thesiger’s Arabian Sands (1959), a yellowing copy of an old newspaper review fell out.

Between reading and looking through the lounge telescopes, I popped downstairs for snacks at Mamsen’s, a traditional Norwegian café serving small-plate delicacies: steak tartare, a succulent gravlax sandwich, fiskakke (fishcakes) on rye bread, and glorious sponge cake. There are 15 places to eat and drink on board, and while Memsen’s and Manfredi’s were my favourites, the chowder and whole lobster in the main restaurant gave them a run for their money.

Kornat

There are 15 places to eat and drink on board

By day three the weather had cleared. I ate a juicy hamburger beside a pool mercifully void of screaming children (Viking has an adults-only policy), and by 3pm settled in the Wintergarden, a glorious tea room with retractable roof and a ceiling of wood carved in the shape of Norwegian trees. And what tea! Waiters ferried multi-layered towers of scones, meringues and cucumber sandwiches, as well as steaming pots of coffee, all to the accompaniment of a jazz quartet. So what were the downsides? If anything I would say the entertainment. On this cruise there were no land excursions, so I attended two Caribbean-themed lectures in the main theatre but found them underwhelming. The Abba showcase in the same venue one evening was more suited to the lobby of a Vegas hotel. But these are quibbles. Besides, the spectacular spa more than made up for deficiencies elsewhere. I had already spent time there, alternating, Nordic-style, between its sweltering sauna and icy “snow grotto” (real snow), but on the recommendation of Karen Schragle, owner of Boston’s Wayland Travel, who I’d met earlier at Mamsen’s, I booked a 90-minute “cupping massage” on my final evening. The treatment uses plastic suction cups to suck toxins out of the skin (all that wine and rich food had to go) and it was extraordinary. When it was over I felt I was floating on air. All 465 of the ship’s rooms have private balconies and I stepped onto mine and stood in the fresh sea air. Puerto Rico was getting close, we’d be there by dawn. I went inside, left the door open, and turned on the flatscreen TV. Our Man in Havana starring Alec Guinness was on. Why not? In the darkness beyond my window was the coast of Cuba. I lay in bed, the sound of the ocean churning against the ship’s sides, and fell asleep to a classic.

The Barcelona Experience Comes to Wales for the very First Time Sponored By Inside Flintshire Magazine.

I had the privilege of organising the first every Barcelona summer camp to be held in Wales At Flint Town Unitdes Cae-Y-Castell footballGround during the last week of July. 140 budding Lionel Messi took part in what turned out to be a fantastic week of Barcelona style training led by Juanjo Carricondo, Mario Rosas and Carlos Gimeno all ex Barcelona players who have played along side some of the greats Including Xavi, Andres Iniesta and the great Messi himself. I would like to thank Marty Levary who runs the Barcelona experience for giving us the opportunity to bring such a fantastic event to North Wales. Marty will be taking the Barcelona experience to America, Australia and Hon kong next year and hopefully back here to North Wales.

Juanjo Carricondo

The Summer camp kicked off with all the children being given a full Nike kit and an opening ceremony whereby the children were led out of the Flint town changing rooms to the champions league theme music and greeted by the Barcelona coaches. The feedback from both parents and the Barcelona coaches was very positive with the Barcelona coaches commenting how beautiful North Wales was and how friendly and polite the parents and children were and they look foward to coming back next year. I have have set up a Barcelona Experience Wales facebook page and have recieved dozens of thank you messages from parents who have said the children loved the Summer camp and were sad to see the coaches leave. I would also like to take this oppurtunity to thank Flint Town united for allowing us to hold the event at their ground, The young coaches who helped out during the week, Hayden, Alex, Rebecca, Tom and Josh. and a big thank you to Kieth who opened the cafe every day and to Brum and the ground staff. Hopefully we can bring the Barcelona coaches back next year for another fun filled summer camp! Thank you to Jack Reece who took some wonderful pictures which you can find at www.facebook.com/Barcaexperiencewales/

MOTORING REVIEW September By Chris Knapman he original Honda NSX of 1990 was renowned not only for its speed and handling, but also its reliability and how easy it was to drive - traits not usually associated with a supercar. To that formula the all-new NSX can add some kind of green credentials, for this is a supercar with a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain that’s designed both to improve performance and reduce the amount of fuel the NSX uses. Rivals for this mid-engined supercar include the Audi R8 and Lamborghini Huracan, as well as the rear-engined Porsche 911 Turbo. The question is, does Honda’s hybrid represent an evolution in supercar design, or is it merely a gimmick? Comfort 8/10 Exceptionally quiet for a car of this type The biggest impression of comfort portrayed by the NSX is in how quiet it is. For that you can thank its ability to run on electric power - in fact, there’s even a Quiet mode that maximises the use of the car’s three electric motors as well as closing flaps in the exhaust to reduce the volume of the V6. True, running in silence is not necessarily part of the supercar experience, but it does give the NSX a neat trick, much in the same way as the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 can slip along without burning any petrol.

Dashboard layout 7/10 Works well, but could do with looking more special You might well expect something a bit special when climbing into your supercar, so it’s a little disappointing to see the NSX uses the same touchscreen as the Honda Jazz. This is made worse by the fact it’s not even a very good system in the Jazz, let alone a car costing 10 times as much, there being too many icons to navigate and only a basic (not to mention optional) Garmin satnav. The quality of materials is plush by Honda’s standards, but arguably still not up to what you’d expect of a car with a six-figure price tag. The main driving mode rotary control that sits in the centre of the dash does at least move with slick precision, allowing you to access the default Sport mode as well as Quiet, Sport+ and Track. In addition, the digital instrument display is crisp and clear, and the controls on the steering wheel make it easy to scroll through the trip computer’s various functions.

The NSX also rides bumps well thanks to its adaptive suspension. It might lack the ultimate suppleness of a McLaren or an Audi R8, but there’s still enough day-to-day comfort to continue Honda’s trick of building a supercar that anybody could drive. A perfect driving position helps here, and while the large tyres do generate some noise on poorly surfaced roads, the NSX is still quieter than a Porsche 911 Turbo.

Easy to drive 8/10 Get used to the size and it’s a piece of cake The latest NSX might be a significantly wider car than its predecessor, but it is still simple to drive once you are accustomed to its size. The large wing mirrors and a decent sized rear screen help with seeing traffic behind, plus there’s a reversing camera to make parking a less nervous affair, but a Porsche 911 still beats the NSX in terms of visibility.

The standard nine-speed automatic gearbox and precise controls also help with ease of driving, allowing you to place the NSX with confidence, whether travelling at low speed through a town or at higher velocity on your favourite country road. It’s also impressive how Honda has managed to create a braking system that can recover energy without the pedal ever feeling anything less than perfectly modulated. It’s testament to how well engineered the NSX is, much like the way the hybrid system switches so smoothly between power sources. In addition, because the NSX uses four-wheel drive it can put its power to the road without ever feeling overly twitchy, provided of course you leave it in the default Sport mode with the stability systems fully engaged. Affordability 5/10 Expensive to buy, but servicing is at least included The NSX is an advanced car that has taken an awfully long time to develop, so it’s no surprise it costs a lot of money to buy. Even so, an asking price that comfortably exceeds that of the Audi R8 and Porsche 911 Turbo is hard to ignore, particularly as it doesn’t include parking sensors or satnav as standard. You do though get three years of servicing included in

the asking price, but bear in mind that any maintenance or repairs will need to be carried out by one of Honda’s NSX specialists. Another unexpected blow that will be of no consequence at all to any self-respecting supercar owner is that just as the NSX’s hybrid system doesn’t allow it to lead the field for fuel economy, so it loses out to the 911 Turbo for CO2 emissions too. Limited supply and a lot of demand should mean resale values hold up well. The verdict 7/10 The Honda NSX is certainly an interesting car, with very high levels of performance and an impressively useable side to its character, while exclusivity ensures it still attracts plenty of attention. Whether you’ll miss the noise and excitement of a high revving engine is another matter, though, and it’s hard to ignore the fact that Honda’s pricing strategy places it amongst some truly fierce competition. Our favourite version Honda NSX, list price £143,950 Options you should add: Metallic paint (£TBC), Garmin navigation, CD player, front and rear parking sensors (£1,700), semi-aniline full leather power-adjustable heated sport seats (£2,000)

HOUSE TO HOME

SEPTEMBER Tile grouting ideas

Grout has changed! Once a boring basic, it's now a great way to make a statement in a kitchen or bathroom Grout. It’s not exactly the most exciting word, is it? Perhaps that’s why, when it comes to making decorating decisions, choosing grout is usually bottom of the list. Which is a shame, because, as you’ll see from our tile grouting ideas, this stuff can be – whisper it – rather sexy. Grout choices have moved way beyond white versus off-white. There’s a whole rainbow of colours to choose from, and even sparkly options. What’s more, the shade you choose can dramatically change the look of your tiles, and transform the plainest ceramic into something glamorous or dram. Grout can play a crucial role in the overall finish of a room, which is why homeowners should take their time when considering which grout they want to use. It also has a significant effect on the look and feel of the tiles used in a project, and is instrumental in either creating a seamless finish through a coordinating shade, or adding structure and definition through a contrasting tone. Add instant wow-factor to your kitchen with this simplest of ideas. Just team a white tile with a dark grout and, boom, your room just got a whole lot cooler. We’re finding that a dark grey grout is particularly popular with a classic white tile. This shade not only disguises marks, but gives a defined edge to the tile, creating a bold, geometric look that highlights its shape.’ Combining white tiles and dark grout is not only an easy trick to pull off, it’s also one to remember if you’re working to a strict budget, as you can take an affordable plain tile and turn it into something altogether more dramatic. You could even re-grout an existing wall with darker grout to overhaul the look of your kitchen or bathroom. There are lots of ways to decorate around this look. You could really go for it and embrace monochrome fullon, with white kitchen units and black appliances, or a clean white bathroom suite with matching black-andwhite floor. If that look is too stark for your tastes, there are plenty of ways to warm things up. You could team your tiles with pale wood furniture, plants, metallics or a combination of all three. We love the way the tiles and grout here are offset by soft sage units and copper fixings…

Add glamour with glitter grout and grout glitter Next up, something relatively new to the whole grout. But if you want to add a bit of bling to your bathroom or kitchen, this is the grout for you. Glitter grout and its partner in crime, grout glitter, can add a bit of sparkle to the plainest of tiles – or turn an already snazzy tile into something truly special. If you’re decorating a smaller space, glitter is a dab hand at reflecting light, too. To clarify, glitter grout is usually available pre-mixed in tubs, but costs a little more. To save pennies, or if you just enjoy a more hands on approach, you can buy bags of specialist grout glitter that can be added to certain types of grout. Be practical with dark grout on the floor Grout can be the stuff of nightmares – particularly on a tiled floor, where dirt builds up quickly. It’s therefore worth considering a darker grout that will mask any grime. Just promise you won’t use it as a reason not to clean your floors regularly! When you have a patterned floor, try to match your grout to one of the tones in the tile for a cohesive look. Who knew that the process of choosing this most practical of finishing touches could be so creative?

Mold Food and Drink Festival 16th and 17th September2017 By Melissa Thorp Crowds flocked to the annual food and drink festival as it returned to Mold for its eleventh year last year. Foodies descended on the Flintshire town for the two-day event at New Street Car Park. Renowned as one of Wales’ top festivals for food-lovers, this family-friendly event attracts over 13,000 visitors each year to sample the delights on offer. This event showcases the best of local and artisan food and drink plus the festival also had plenty of arts and craft, live music, cookery theatre and school and celebrity chef demonstrations. We had a great time checking it out last year. On arrival we were given a goodie bag and a programme and set about making our way around the 120 exhibitors from across Wales with, of course, plenty of food and drink stalls to tempt the tastebuds. We love the fact you can ‘try before you buy’ and even sample some things you haven’t tried before. Once we’d had a good look round, we picked up food from our favourite stalls and sat in the main atrium of the open air food court. From there we could enjoy the live music whilst we ate and sit back and watch the bustle. There was also plenty for the kids to do with

34

interactive cookery workshops and plenty of children’s activities in the Interactive Zone, with art and craft activities by Spavens and the popular Children’s Cookery School and Food Science Lab offering free, fun cookery sessions throughout the weekend. This year the two day event returns and is set to be even bigger and better than ever. Festival chairman John Les Tomos said: “We’re delighted to welcome, yet again, some great names to the festival. Every year the celebrity and local chefs provide entertaining and creative cookery demonstrations for our visitors. This year I think we have a particularly exciting line-up with lots of variety on offer.” “We’re gearing up for an even bigger and better festival for this year, with a record number of food and drink exhibitors, street food, live music and the children’s cookery theatre. There will also be new interactive demos by local producers including sausage making, apple pressing and candle rolling.” “We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone to our 12th festival. It’s going to be a fantastic weekend.” There are over 140 food and drink exhibitors from

the local area and beyond this year, with an even bigger array of mouth-watering gourmet goodies to savour. The cookery theatre programme will feature inspirational demonstrations by headliner Jean-Christophe Novelli, The Great British Bake Off winner Jo Wheatley and award-winning chef Graham Tinsley on the Saturday, plus many more! The children’s cookery school and food science lab returns, along with healthy eating trails, and interactive demos. Local bands and musicians will once again entertain on the outdoor stage and there’s plenty of seating in the open-air foodcourt which offers not only a huge choice of delicious street food, but a selection of local ales and ciders too. The Bridge Inn

01244538806

This month took us to the bridge inn Sandycroft which re opened at Easter and is under new management. The new manager David has a wealth of experience in the catering and hospitality industry having served his time in the Chester Grovenor Hotel he has since held management positions at the Goshawk, the Nags Head Mickle Traford ,The Milstone Penyfordd and the Oak Taporley amiongs others. The Bridge In is an inviting looking pub from the outside and after having a face lift since re opening its very contempory on the inside too and has been refurbished to a high standard. The bar area had a warm inviting atmosphere and it’s the kind of pub you could not only come for a meal but make a night of it and enjoy the great selection of draught beers and lagers or a wine in the huge enclosed beer garden were they have a children’s play area and even have an area at the rear with Chickens they are rearing. We were shown to our table and asked what drinks we would like whilst we perused the menu. We were spoilt for choice as the Starters all sounded delicious but swiftly decided on Chicken wings for Reg and BBQ ribs for me. The starters were brought out quickly and looked delicious they were both presented on butcher blocks, the chicken wings were served in a tin pot with a side of sour cream. The wings were in a peri peri sauce which had a kick to them but were tasty at the same time, the sour cream worked well to cool them down a tad. The ribs were amazing they literally fell of the bone and the sauce was to die for the idea of having a toasted ciabatta accompanying them to dip in the sauce was a great addition as the sauce was absolutely too good to waste! The service was impeccable and even though they were pretty busy the food was brought out swiftly and all piping hot. For the main meal Reg chose the home made Steak burger and I had the 10oz rump steak. The homemade steak burger was ginormous and so succulent it was topped with tomatoes and melted cheese and sandwiched in a brioche bun it came with a pan of proper homemade chunky chips which were absolutely amazing. The 10oz rump steak likewise did not disappoint, it was tasty and cooked perfectly again this was presented with a pan of chips, a fried tomatoe and mushrooms and as requested a jug of peppercorn sauce which was the creamiest peppercorn sauce I have 38

ever tasted and was yummy to dip the chunky chips in. Our main and starter were really enjoyable and although we were bursting we could not resist trying a dessert especially when I noticed the cheeseboard on the menu. Reg opted for New York cheesecake and me the cheeseboard , the cheesecake was a generous slab of tangy, creamy filling on a thick biscuit base it was drizzled with chocolate sauce and was delicious. The cheese board did not disappoint the huge platter was filled with a variety of cheeses including creamy Brie, crumbly Cheshire ,Mature Cheddar and Stilton it was a good balance of different cheeses it was also served with an assortment of crackers butter a pot of Ploughman’s pickle , grapes, apples and capers. The three courses were all delicious we could not fault anything this together with the impeccable service ,lovely relaxed surroundings and atmosphere makes the Bridge Inn a perfect place to eat and drink definitely a 5 stars from Inside Flintshire magazine The Bill BBQ Ribs - £5.25 Hot Chicken Wings -£4.50 Home made steak burger -£9.50 10oz Rump Steak -£12.95 New York Cheescake – £4.50 Cheeseboard - £5.25

Taste Test Gin Interest in gin has exploded over the last decade with independent producers flourishing and more emphasis on artisanal methods among the big distillers. What’s your favourite gin and how do you enjoy it? Here’s our top 3 From its beginnings on the bench of a 17th century Dutch chemist, the history of gin has not always been a happy one. Originally intended as a medicine, gin became suddenly affordable in Britain due to changes in the duty levied following the accession of William of Orange to the throne. French brandy prices went through the roof, a great many small-scale gin distilleries were established across London and by the early years of the 18th century what had become known as the Gin Craze was truly out of hand. The drunkenness and abandon on display in William Hogarth’s Gin Lane (1751) epitomises the widespread misery and dissolution caused by gin, in deliberate contrast to the happy, well-fed workers with their foaming tankards on Beer Street. In the first third of the 19th century, advancements in distillation eventually allowed for the mass-production of pure spirits using “continuous” stills. These spirits were then re-distilled to make “London dry gin”, the defining stipulations for which are still in force today: it must contain no added sugar, be flavoured primarily with juniper, and a minimum of 37.5% alcohol by volume. 40

Gone were the wide variations in quality and the terrible adulterants added by earlier generations of unscrupulous distillers, and with the discovery that quinine was effective against malaria the colonial officer class began to drink the new “tonic water” enlivened with gin. Now enjoyed in fashionable circles, the rehabilitation of mothers’ ruin was complete, with the added bonus that the antimalarial tonic water actually worked. The perception of a link between gin and glamorous living received another fillip in the jazz age. The drinking of cocktails and the culture around them grew and flourished even during American prohibition, and President Roosevelt’s first act upon signing the paperwork which repealed the alcohol ban was to mix a martini, using plenty of gin, vermouth and olive brine. The growing popularity of gin cocktails provided the distillers with another challenge: the fruity juniper and citrussy coriander seed flavours which work so well with tonic water are not always ideal in a cocktail. In the last decade or so enthusiasm for interesting gins has grown, and with it, the number of small dis-

tillers. One of the newest is Portobello Road, a small outfit boasting its own ‘Ginstitute’, a tiny room above the Portobello Star dedicated to the history and scientific understanding of gin. They offer private tuition and blending classes, run by master distiller and (ahem) ginthusiast Jake Burger, whose encyclopedic knowledge made for a very enjoyable afternoon for our tasting panel. Here are our tasting notes and musings. This isn’t a comprehensive list of the gins currently available, it’s our panel’s pick of those they found most enjoyable, interesting or unusual. There are now almost too many gins to count, each with characteristics as unique as every gin drinker, so please share your loves, hates and serving suggestions.

Leading the way towards the current gin revival, Bombay Sapphire has been around since 1987 and is distilled using a “carterhead” still, meaning the botanicals do not come into direct contact with alcohol but are contained in a wire basket above the liquid and the flavours released by vapour alone. This process makes for a less aggressively flavoured spirit, and if you can recover from the disappointment that it’s (spoiler alert) not actually blue, you can enjoy a nice warm and spicy gin with a liquorice aftertaste. There’s not much citrus, but heavy hints of cinnamon and for those who can detect it, Grains of Paradise.

Current darling of many enthusiasts (and named the best in the world by the Wall St Journal a few years back) this excellent gin from Scottish whisky distillers William Grant utilises rose petals and cucumber for a distinctive and memorably fresh taste that’s just the right side of floral. Best served with a slice of cucumber, it works beautifully in G&Ts and cocktails. Bartenders may hate the hard-topour apothecary-style bottle but it’s a smart nod to gin’s medicinal history. Details: 41.4% ABV, RRP £25.29 for 70cl. Stockists include Sainbury’s, Waitrose, Asda, Morrisons, Peckham’s, Harvey Nichols,

Hendrick’s

Portobello Road is a superbly balanced, traditional gin with a peppery kick. Nice and ginny without being too heavy on the juniper, and plenty of G&T-friendly fresh citrus and coriander. Enough spicy nutmeg and cassia to stand up for itself in a cocktail, even in the ultimate test of a gin’s character, a negroni. Add a twist of grapefruit for the ultimate G&T. Details: 42%, RRP £24 for 70cl, available from the distiller on Portobello Road, London, and online BLOOM According to the blurb this gin is (as you might expect given the name) “inspired by the classic aromas of England’s country gardens.” Sure enough our tasters found it “very floral, but warm too. A bit girly.” Probably more one for a summer’s G&T than a cocktail. Portobello Road

How to Make a Kissing Ball Kissing balls are a beautiful alternative to fresh flowers on your wedding day. Foam flowers are much cheaper and just as pretty, and you can create a stunning floral arrangement in no time at all - give it a go! You Will Need 10cm polystyrene ball Selection of wired foam roses Wired crystals Small length of ribbon Dressmaking pin Beads (optional) Craft Essentials Cool melt glue gun Wire cutters How to Make 1. To start, cut your wired roses leaving about 1cm of wire from the head, as this will help place the roses into the polystyrene ball more securely. Top Tip! . . .Most polystyrene balls have a join around the middle of the ball. This is great to use as a start guide when gluing your flowers. 2. All the way around the middle of your ball, place your flowers into the polystyrene. Once happy with the spacing of the flowers, use your glue gun to glue in place.

3. Repeat step 2, placing more flowers above and below the first line of flowers securing with a glue gun. Fill the ball until you are left with a small space at the top.

4. To hang the kissing ball take a piece of ribbon and fold it in half, using a pin to collect the two ends of the ribbon and place into the top of the polystyrene ball. Glue to secure. 5. Once your ribbon is secure, place your last flower next to the ribbon to hide the join.

6. To add detail to your kissing ball, use wired crystals randomly placed in between the flowers. Use the wire they’re on to place into the polystyrene ball and glue into place.

For optional detail, you can place beads into the centre of some of your roses. Pearls and crystal beads look great for this, and you can glue them in place with your glue gun.

They also look great as Christmas decorations using your evergreen branches, cones, berries and a bit of gold spray, just hang your gorgeous globe outside to spruce up a porch, patio, decking area. Happy crafting!

Are You Ready for a Cat? Keeping a cat continued from last month… Care – There are many pet cats who never visit the vet and who are left to their own devices when their owners are away for the weekends. And they suffer for it. These cats tend to die young, often of simple dehydration on a hot weekend or of diseases that are easy to prevent or treat. Be prepared to make arrangements for your pet’s care and health. Future plans – Any plans for moving, changing jobs, and so on must take kitty into account. Incidentally, you might have read some scary things about Toxoplasmosis and pregnancy. You’re far more likely to catch it from undercooked meat than from your cat, in any case. But if you’re pregnant and your cat is your only housemate, don’t panic. Simply wear rubber gloves when you change the litter box and be sure to change or sift the litter at least once a day (twice is better), and you’ll be fine. The kitty droppings need to be sitting around for a day before you can reasonably catch Toxoplasmosis from them. (You wouldn’t leave the kitty poo lying around after sifting it, right?) Are You Ready to Be a Responsible Owner? A cat is yours for life and you not only have a responsibility to them but the community in which you live as well. As a responsible cat owner you will need to ensure that: Your cat has regular vet check-ups and vaccinations; vaccinations; Your cat is protected from fleas, worms and ticks; Your cat is de-sexed; You obeying licensing laws for your area; You ensure your cat remains in secure environment and and doesdoes not pose a threat to native animal species; not pose a threat to native animal species; Your cat has current identification tags at all times; You give your cat lots of love, companionship and a healthy, nutritious diet diet healthy, nutritious Being a responsible cat owner is about making sure your cat is happy and healthy and getting the love and treatment it deserves as a family member. Are You Really Ready? There is a lot to think about before getting a cat to share your life and home with and it’s important you take the time to carefully consider whether a cat is right for you. Too many cats end up at shelters each year because people weren’t really ready to have a cat in their lives. Think about how your life will change once you get a cat and try to be realistic about your expectations. If you decide that you are truly ready then consider adopting a cat or kitten from the local shelter. Not only will you benefit from lower adoption fees for a healthy, micro-chipped cat; you will also be saving a life. 60

Cats Living With Dogs The majority of cats can happily coexist with a dog if they are given time to comfortably get to know each other. If a puppy and kitten are raised together, they generally will learn right away to tolerate each other, and some cats and dogs grow to be real friends, even playing and napping together. However, if a dog is already an established member of the household and a new cat or kitten is going to join the family, certain precautions need to be taken. When you first introduce a cat and dog, make sure the cat is at the dog’s eye level. You should also keep a firm grip on both animals, which will make them feel more comfortable and provide them with a sense of security. If one of the animals seems either aggressive or frightened, immediately remove the cat and try again at a later time. You don’t want to force the situation by pushing them before they’re ready, as this will only make matters worse. If you take a few minutes several times a day to give the cat and dog this carefully supervised time together, you should soon see them feeling more relaxed around each other.

September Late summer progresses into autumn September is generally a cooler, gustier month than August and the days are noticeably shorter. While there's not as much to do in the ornamental garden at this time of the year, if you have a fruit or vegetable patch, you'll be busy reaping the rewards of harvest. It's also time to get out and start planting spring flowering bulbs for next year and you can collect seeds for next summer's colour too. Make the most of the remaining warmth while you can! Flowers Sow sweet peas in a cold frame or the greenhouse for early summer blooms next year. If you sowed any spring-flowering biennials such as Viola, Digitalis (foxglove) or Erysimum (wallflowers), earlier in the summer, they will now need planting out. This is a good time of year to plant new perennials, especially towards the end of September, as the soil is still warm, but moisture levels are increasing. Cutting back, pruning and dividing Don't neglect hanging basket maintenance - a little deadheading, watering and feeding can keep them going until mid-autumn. Once they are past their best, re-plant as winter/spring hanging baskets with springflowering bulbs, winter heathers, trailing ivies and spring-flowering plants as above. Continue to deadhead plants such as dahlias, delphiniums, roses and penstemons to prolong the display and give colour well into the month. Lawns Mow less frequently during autumn, and raise the height of cut as the growth rate of the grass slows down. This will help the lawn to withstand the last of the warm, dry weather, and also keep it resistant to treading as the wet weather arrives. You can harden your lawn up for winter by applying an autumn lawn feed, which is high in potassium. Do this after scarifying and aerating but before applying a top dressing. Do not give summer feeds that are high in nitrogen as this will only result in weak, soft growth, which will be prone to disease in the autumn weather. Ponds Cover the surface of ponds with netting to stop fallen leaves from entering. Accumulated debris in the pond can encourage growth of algae and weeds, which will eventually harm the fish by reducing available oxygen levels.Top up water levels when necessary, particularly during warmer weather, and continue to remove blanket and duckweed. Remove dead leaves from waterlilies as the foliage dies back. Now is also a good time to divide waterlilies and other pond plants to increase stocks or control over vigorous growth. Overgrown marginal plants can just be cut back, if further stocks are not required. A maximum of 50 percent of the water’s surface should be taken up with planting. Waterlilies can be prone to fungal problems such as crown rot and leaf spot, so nip any problems in the bud by dealing with them promptly. Remove affected leaves.

20

Pest and disease watch Inspect chrysanthemums for signs of white rust. Distortion on Phlox could indicate the presence of phlox eelworm. Discoloured leaves on herbaceous plants, such as Chrysanthemum, Anemone and Penstemon could be leaf and bud eelworm. Powdery mildew can still be a problem in a dry and warm September. General maintenance Bring inside any tender perennials, such as fuchsias, gazanias, lantanas and abutilons, before frosts cause damage. Some tall late-flowering perennials, such as asters, may still need staking to stop them being blown over in the wind. Most perennial weeds are vulnerable to weedkiller in early autumn. Applying a product containing glyphosate will ensure that the roots, as well as the top growth, are killed. Treasured plants must be protected with plastic sheeting. If the weather is already autumnal, you can now plant and move shrubs and trees without having to worry excessively about their survival and establishment. Shrubs planted now will get off to a flying start next spring, as they will have had all winter to settle in.

This is an ideal time of year to create new lawns from turf or seed.

Why September matters. As you probably know many cancers have an awareness month or week, September is womb cancer awareness month and this year September 20th is International Womb Cancer Awareness day, the awareness colour being peach. 2017 will be WCSUK’s (Womb Cancer Support UK) 7th Awareness campaign and each year they try and raise as much awareness they can.

senting with all the usual symptoms they are told by their GP that they are too young to be diagnosed. I am aware of at least 2 who were diagnosed at 19 so no woman is “too young” to get womb cancer.

Womb cancer is the 4th most common cancer in UK women yet it’s one that very few women have heard about, even those that are diagnosed with it. More women are diagnosed with womb cancer than either ovarian or cervical, which most women have at least heard about even if they don’t know the symptoms. It’s only because the survival rate is not so good with these cancers that we know more about them.

This September, as with previous years, WCSUK will be doing all we can to raise awareness of womb cancer. They are collaborating with other women’s health organisations and hope their efforts will go some way to raising the profile of this cancer and making all women aware that it could happen to them – after all, there are already many women out there who didn’t think it would happen to them and sadly it did.

Womb Cancer Support UK does not have a large budget nor do they have celebrity followers, there are no fancy graphics or any media contacts, they don’t have any staff - just one lady called Kaz Molloy who herself is a womb cancer fighter sat at her laptop raising awareness along with many other people, most of them womb cancer fighter’s or survivors. Kaz states in her blog that Sadly, there are more and more younger women being diagnosed and it’s often very hard for them to get a firm diagnosis because despite pre80

Until 2011 there was no awareness month for womb cancer, that is until Womb Cancer Support UK, which was formed earlier that year, decided to follow on from their American counterparts and take September and turn it “Peach”.

Whether you are newly diagnosed, currently undergoing treatment or are in remission, or would like to help raise awareness and find more please feel free to join them on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/WombCancerSupportUK/ Remember this September go peach for womb cancer Website - http://wombcancersupportuk.weebly.com/ Contact Loose Ladies via - www.looseladies.co.uk
