I have to say August wasn’t the best weather-wise and what we had become accustomed to with the rest of the summer, all in all what a great summer we’ve had. The Dinorben Arms This month we visited The Dinorben Arms which has undergone a Two million pound renovation by the Brunning and Price group after lying empty for nearly a decade. The Dinorben Arms sits in the heart of the small village of Badfari, nestled in the shadows of St Stephensâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s church. The building dates back to the 17th century and the character of the original pub still remains in the front section, with open fires ,low oak beams and the old well which now sits in front of the bar. A tall tower has now been 6

added to the rear of the building which houses a spacious terrace with the most spectacular panoramic views of the stunning countryside and hills beyond, a perfect setting for a relaxing drink from the wellstocked bar or a leisurely meal with friends or family.

We were impressed that the Dinorben Arms pride themselves on using fresh quality ingredients therefore they upload the daily menu before 12 noon each day for customers to peruse at their leisure. We visited on a Wednesday lunch time and had

pre booked a table it was lucky we had as when we arrived every area of the pub was bustling including the outdoor areas. We were immediately impressed by the décor it was a mix of old and new which had been thoroughly modernised while retaining all the key historical features. We ordered our drinks at the bar and were shown to our table. We were eager to peruse the menu whilst sipping a refreshing Lilley’s Mango cider which was delicious. We did have to wait some time to be asked if we were ready to order but this wasn’t a problem as the menu was so good we could not decide what to choose and we enjoyed a second Mango cider. On arrival the meals looked amazing; we had ordered Braised shoulder of lamb with dauphinoise potatoes, seasonal vegetables and rosemary gravy. The lamb just fell off the bone and was delicious the potatoes were creamy and decadent and the rosemary gravy was tasty and silky smooth, just perfect.

We also ordered two 7oz fillet steaks these were both asked to be medium rare unfortunately one was medium but we did not return it as it was still absolutely delicious and could not bear to part with it! The steaks were served with Portobello mushrooms, peppercorn sauce, fresh juicy tomato and homemade chunky chips. Again everything was tasty fresh and well-seasoned.

The last meal was roasted chalk stream trout with mussels and cockles. This was served with asparagus with crushed new potatoes and white wine sauce. The trout was cooked to perfection crispy on the top flaky and soft in the middle seasoned with plenty of lemon and salt and pepper with the mussels and cockles a lovely addition to the dish. The crushed new potatoes were delicious they were mixed with plenty of butter and fresh chives and just worked perfectly with the Trout and the creamy white wine sauce which was drizzled all over the potatoes. This dish is an absolute must if you visit the Dinorben Arms.

Top autumn sunshine holidays

utumn is a great time to get away for a final blast of sunshine not too far from home. Not only have the crowds thinned, allowing you to find space on the beaches and enjoy the sights without the queues, but midday temperatures have receded - perfect for donning walking shoes and exploring rural areas that are wonderful at this time of year. Best of all, many hotels slash their rates as soon as the summer crowds head home.

Sardinia, Italy

Average maximum temperature: 27C Visit Sardinia in autumn and you can discover one of the island’s best-kept secrets: Autunno in Barbagia (Autumn in Barbagia). Running from September to December, a series of festivals take place across 27 villages in Barbagia, a mountainous area of inland Sardinia (sardegnaturismo. it). Streets are transformed into markets, local craftsmen hold workshops, locals throw open their doors - and dining rooms - to visitors and walks are held through the hills

Andalucia, Spain

Average maximum temperature: 32C Autumn days in Andalucia are still exotically warm, often hitting the low 30s. While the beaches are great this time of year - far quieter than in July and August - this is the time to head to the cooler climes of the hills for some rambling.

Sierra de Aracena national park, just north of Seville, is one of the least-known of Andalucia’s parks. Lace up your boots and explore its wooded valleys, whitewashed villages and groves of chestnuts - their leaves turning red and golden. Don’t miss the lively market town of Aracena, with its limestone caves and 13th-century church built by the Knights Templar. Stay: Finca el Moro (+34 959 501079, fincaelmoro.com), in the heart of the Sierra de Aracena national park, is a 75-acre hill farm with three cottages, sleeping between two and six, each with its own pool. There’s no Wi-Fi, no TV, just excellent walking from the farm - take the donkey, Violetta, to carry your picnic, or set off on one of the farm’s horses (experienced riders only). From €500 per week for a one-bedroom cottage. Get there: Ryanair (ryanair.com) flies from London Stansted, London Gatwick and Bristol to Seville from £40 return.

Cyprus

Average maximum temperature: 33C Cyprus’s southerly position means it enjoys a long, hot autumn, with temperatures well into the 30s. After a day’s romp, cool off with a dip in the sea, still blissfully warm at this time of year; Coral Bay, a large horseshoe-shaped cove backed by steep limestone cliffs and with blue flag status should do just the trick. Stay: Amarakos (+357 22 313374, amarakos.com), situated in the sleepy village of Kato Akourdalia - close to Coral Bay and Paphos - is a family-run guest-house with seven rooms around a flower-filled courtyard. Guided walks, cooking lessons and visits to archaeological sites can all be arranged. Doubles from €77 per night, including breakfast. Get there: Easyjet flies from London Gatwick, London Luton, Bristol and Manchester to Paphos from £105 return.

Lanzarote, Canary Islands

Average maximum temperature: 29C Just 70km from the Western Sahara, Lanzarote has a more desert-like climate than the Mediterranean, and is at its best come autumn. The sea, heated by the summer sun, is at its warmest; air temperatures still average around the mid-20s and the tourist crowds have subsided. This is the perfect time to don your walking shoes and trek the island’s volcanic peaks, for example Timanfaya national park (Fire Mountain), with its striking red and ocre lunar landscape and seismic activity. Stay: Casa El Morro (+34 928 830392, casaelmorrolanzarote.com) is an 18th-century mansion, located above the village of Uga on the outskirts of the Timanfaya national park, that has been transformed into seven self-contained suites sleeping two to five, furnished with collections from Arabia, the Orient and Indonesia. From €107 per night, room only, sleeping up to three.

Get there: Easyjet flies from London Gatwick and Liverpool to Arrecife from £62 return.

Kas, Turkey

Average maximum temperature: 29C Still sunny but not scorching, autumn is the perfect time to visit this relaxed old fishing village, situated on the Lycian coast in south Turkey. Especially if you’re planning on exploring the Lycian Way, a long-distance footpath that stretches for 500km from Fethiye to Antalya through the ancient land of Lycia (Kas is a good base for exploring the southernmost sections). If it’s watersports you’re after, the

locals say the best time to dive is after the first autumn rain (usually between late September and early October), as this is when you can see the most fish activity. Stay: Villa Hotel Tamara (+90 242 836 32 73, hoteltamara. com.tr) in Kas has 26 rooms and suites - all with sea views - two swimming pools and terraces that lead down to the private beach. Doubles from €100 per night, including breakfast.

Rhodes, Greece

Average maximum temperature: 28C Whichever Greek island you pick in autumn you’re likely to find warm sunshine and few crowds. But if there’s one island that is particulary lovely at this time of year it’s Rhodes. Its medieval Old Town is teeming with tourists in July and August. Visit in the autumn, however, and you can have its narrow alleys, lined with Ottoman mansions, and tranquil squares virtually all to yourself. The thermometer will hover around the mid to high 20s, perfect for catching the sun on the nearby beaches; head to Kalithea, just 8km south, famous for its hot medicinal springs.

Stay: Spirit of the Knights (i-escape.com/spiritoftheknights. psp), in the centre of Rhodes’ Old Town, is a family-run hotel with six elegant rooms, all stone arches, marble floors, iron candelabras and stained glass windows. Fitness Matters How exercise boosts the mind I

ncreasingly, research is showing that regular exercise can ward off cerebral diseases such as Alzheimer’s, dementia and Parkinson’s, as well as relieve stress and anxiety, alleviate depression, boost creativity and preserve mental faculties and skills. Exercise can also enhance the way you feel about yourself – your body image and self esteem – which has a knock-on positive effects in other areas of your life, such as work and relationships.

How does exercise influence mental function?

Exercise increases the production of key brain chemicals that encourage the growth of brain and nerve cells and help develop new neural pathways (lines of communication between the brain and the body). It also improves blood and oxygen flow to the brain and promotes the growth of blood vessels, allowing brain tissue to be nourished and preserved. A recent study

measured the mental ability of 18-24 year olds before and after exercise. After a period of hard running on a treadmill, their decision-making process was faster and more of their answers were correct.

Exercise improving creativity

Exercise can also help get your creative juices flowing. Research has found that creative thinking and problem solving improved after prolonged aerobic exercise. Exercise also boosts blood flow to the brain, particularly the right hemisphere, which is associated with creativity and imagination. Repetitive, rhythmic activities, such as swimming laps or treadmill running, are best for cerebral benefits as they require little conscious thought. But you have to keep it up - if you stop training, the improvements disappear.

Kick out stress with exercise

The reason most frequently attributed to explain why exercise makes us feel good is the flood of endorphins it causes (the body’s own morphine-like hormones), but increasingly, research is questioning the role of endorphins and pointing more towards a psychological rather than physiological

cause. Exercise provides a distraction from the grind of daily life – giving us ‘time out’ from the rat race. It also gives a sense of accomplishment, which sport psychologists call ‘mastery’, boosting self-esteem and proffering a sense of control over our lives. There is also evidence to suggest that that vigorous exercise works best for depression.

It’s never too late to exercise Even if you haven’t been a regular exerciser all your life, it’s never too late to reap the benefits. Exercising for half an hour at least twice a week during midlife can significantly cut a person’s risk of dementia later. People in their late 40s and early 50s could reduce their risk of dementia by about 50 per cent, according to the study. And it’s not boatloads of exercise, either – physical activity which lasted 20-30 minutes at least twice a week, and which was enough to cause breathlessness and sweating, was sufficient. Research shows a link between a lack of activity and Alzheimer’s disease, while tests on mice suggest that regular workouts might halt the progression of Parkinson’s. The study showed that sustained exercise, for a time span of at least three months, prevented cell death in the part of the brain that controls movement and is impaired in the disease.

Discover the soaring mountains of Snowdonia, the scenic countryside of the North East Wales borderlands and Anglesey or coastal walks which wrap around the whole area, from Barmouth in the west to Flintshire in the north east.

Isle of Anglesey Coast

Montgomery Canal

The beautiful island of Anglesey is criss-crossed with quiet lanes and paths, making it an ideal base for walkers. Its coast path runs through spectacular scenery, with 95% of it in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Walk from the junction with the Llangollen Canal to Newtown, with stretches that include a section of the Severn Valley. The Montgomery Canal walk cuts through border country giving access to fairly level walking and to Berriew, one of the prettiest villages in Wales.

This is the place to come for seabirds, wildlife and a wealth of ancient history.

Look out for Lledan Brook Aqueduct at Welshpool, and Belan Locks, two miles to the south of the town, where thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a weir, two locks and some fascinating lime kilns.

Mynydd Hiraethog Footpath The Mynydd Hiraethog and Denbigh Moors Footpath Network includes a linear 40 mile (64km) route, together with six shorter circular routes which can each be walked individually. The Denbigh Moors are to the north of the Cambrian Mountains and are a rare surviving part of an immense grouse moor and shooting estate. The eastern side of the moor includes the peaks of Tir Mostyn and Foel Goch, the Clocaenog Forest and the two major valleys of the moorland, the Alwen and Brenig.

North Wales Path

Mary Jones Walk

The North Wales Path winds for 60 miles (96 km) along the coast from Bangor to Prestatyn, mostly along public footpaths. It takes you to traditional seaside resorts which you can reach from the path, and also gives you stunning mountain and coastal views.

This 28-mile walk through the Snowdonia National Park is a bracing walk to undertake in sections, but consider the 15 year old girl the walk is named after, who walked the entire distance barefoot in 1800 to buy a bible from Bala.

Near Prestatyn, and close to the Offas Dyke Path, the route follows the Prestatyn Dyserth Way, a 2 2/3 mile (4.3 km) former railway. Some of the most stunning views on the path are of the soaring Snowdonia mountains, these can be seen from Little Ormes Head, or from Conwy Castle.

The 'Edge of Wales' walk The Edge of Wales, a relatively new coastal path, along the top of the Llŷn Peninsula, following pilgrim's routes to Bardsey Island. The walk is "The only long distance walk in Britain to finish with a sea voyage to an island, and a real adventure" according to co-ordinator Peter Hewlett.

She saved what little money she had for six years to afford her bible and walked from Llanfihangel-y-Pennant across valleys and around mountains to Bala Lake. Her journey inspired the founding of the Bible Society.

The route takes in many of the most breathtaking views and loveliest villages in Llŷn, and is ideal for walking end to end, or in small chunks as day walks.

The Wat's Dyke trail follows the route of the channel using public footpaths and quiet country lanes for a distance of 61 miles (99km) between Llanymynech, close to

the Powys/Shropshire border and Basingwerk Abbey, which is within a stone’s throw of the River Dee estuary near Holywell in Flintshire.

Taith Ardudwy Way Taith Ardudwy Way is a well signposted upland pathway of 24 miles (38km) from Barmouth in the south to Llandecwyn in the north. The Way traverses Ardudwy, an ancient commote (an administrative area in the Middle Ages). It visits each of the parishes bordering Cardigan Bay and crosses the geological formation of Cambrian Rocks, amongst the oldest in Wales, known as the Harlech Dome. The Way is chosen to take in some of the best coastal and mountain views in Wales, visiting prehistoric sites and offers the chance to see varied vegetation and rare birds of the area.

Plan a loft conversion

The new Seat Leon Cupra R: Honed to perfection

he standard Seat Leon Cupra looks too subtle, you say? Fear not. The limited edition R model might just be the answer to your prayers. Remodelled front and rear bumpers, side skirts and wider wheelarches set the scene, while lashings of carbonfibre on the rear wing, rear diffuser and front spoiler confirm the R as a no-go zone for shrinking violets.

Unique 19-inch black and copper alloy wheels are also included, although, sadly (or perhaps thankfully) the matte paint won’t be available on UK cars. Instead, there’s a choice of either Monsoon Grey or Midnight Black metallic hues, both of which are complemented by copper coloured detailing on the door mirrors and badges. Of a total production run of 799 cars, only 24 have been allocated for the UK and all have (reputedly) sold out.

Nice bodykit, but is it any faster than the standard car?

It certainly should be. Seat’s Cupra division has been given a licence to fettle, with the outcome being a number

of technical upgrades to the already accomplished Leon hot hatch. Power is up from 300 to 310hp, giving the R a slightly improved 0-62mph time of 5.8 seconds and an identical top speed of 155mph. Eagle-eyed readers will note that the acceleration time is a whole 0.9 seconds down on the Leon ST Cupra estate, owing to the fact that the Cupra R is front-wheel-drive and six-speed manual only. Give it the full AWD, DSG auto treatment and you’d be straying inconveniently far into Golf R territory... Other improvements include a more exciting exhaust note, modified steering and camber angles on the front axle and four-pot Brembo brake calipers. Should owners wish, super-sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres are available as a cost option.

Enough of the facts, what’s it like to drive?

A lot like a regular Leon Cupra, funnily enough – but with an added layer of urgency and sharpness. Let’s start with the poke. We reckon in a straight quarter-mile race there would be almost nothing to choose between the Cupra R and the regular Cupra, yet the former still manages to feel quicker. There’s little difference in the low to mid ranges of the rev band, yet take it above 4000rpm and the Cupra R appears freer-revving and keener to pile on the mph.

Drivers are given a real incentive to hit the redline thanks to a series of playful parps from the tweaked exhaust when you do. It’s a small difference, but adds a chunk of character to what was previously an unremarkable exhaust note. Handling improvements are noticeable, too. Turn in a tricky tightening bend and you’ll notice the front end has been sharpened considerably thanks to those tweaks to the steering. There’s an extra level of finesse to the Cupra R’s steering, and it feels keener to turn in, more ‘darty’, compared with the standard car. It’s not quite up there with the Civic Type R for front-end feedback, but it’s a step forward from the standard Cupra. In terms of suspension modifications, the Cupra R’s adaptive dampers have been given their own unique settings, and it has more extreme camber than regular Cupra models – the latter a key ingredient in the front-end response. While the ride is firm, it’s not unbearably so on bumpy British roads, even in the most extreme ‘Cupra’ driving mode, and low-speed ride is actually really quite comfortable. On the comfort front, hat-tip also to the grippy, supportive and great-looking seats. The electronic locking differential is shared with the regular Cupra, and finds plenty of traction out of slow corners, although there’s enough torque to keep the traction control light winking all the way to the redline in third gear.

Do I get any extra kit over the standard car?

That you do. As well as the already generous equipment list on the regular Leon Cupra, the R gains goodies such as

KESSY (keyless entry and keyless go with wireless phone charger), the Winter Pack (heated front seats and headlight washers), the Safety Pack (tiredness recognition and rear seatbelt reminder), a rear-view camera, BeatsAudio sound system, adaptive cruise control and, finally, an upgraded sat-nav.

Verdict

The Leon Cupra R is a welcome addition to the current spread of more focused, limited-edition hot hatches on the market. It manages to feel that little bit more honed and exciting than the regular Cupra and looks the part too. Some may find it sad that Seat didn’t go a little further with the upgrades, however, especially since so few cars are destined for the UK. My week 8, I was running my ďŹ rst 5k distance. Since then I have now ran 20 full 5k's, approx 3 runs a week. I have NEVER ran in my life before but always liked the idea and with the support of Slimming World and inspirational people, I know I can keep it going. I did my ďŹ rst 5k event on July 15th in Hawarden, and as it was my ďŹ rst , decided to ask for sponsors we raised over ÂŁ350. My motivation was becoming a Nana in January and didn't want to be a fat Nana but above all I didn't want being over weight to affect my health. I know I could get ill for many reasons but I didn't want what I weighed and my lifestyle to be a contributing factor. I know I'll get back to target and now i know I will keep the weight off. 43

Mexican Chilli Chicken

A great spicy supper that can be made in advance

To serve:

1 large avocado, stoned, peeled and sliced | lime juice | handful fresh coriander | 4 large spoonfuls soured cream.

Method

1. Heat the oil in a large pan and fry the onion until

softened. Stir in the spices and cook for a few secs. Pour in the tomatoes and 2 cans of water, then crumble in the stock cube. Bring to the boil and add the chorizo and chicken thighs. Push the chicken under the liquid, cover and simmer for 20 mins. 2. Stir the peppers into the pan, then cook for 20 mins more. Tip in the cannellini beans.

3. To eat now: Warm through to heat the beans. Toss the avocado with the lime and some salt and serve on top of the casserole with a sprinkling of coriander. Top each portion with soured cream. Serve with rice, jacket potatoes or a handful of spicy tortilla chips. 4. To eat later: Cool and keep in the fridge for up to 48 hours. Warm on top of the stove until bubbling and serve as above.

● Continue to feed and dead-head your hanging basket and container plants - they will often keep going until the first frosts. ● Try autumn-sowing hardy annuals for bigger plants next year. ● Plant hyacinth and amaryllis bulbs for forcing, to ensure a crowd of colourful blooms at Christmas. They will grow vigorously next spring if planted this autumn. ● Keep deadheading annuals and perennials to extend their performance. ● Keep dead-heading your Penstemons, Dahlias and Roses to prolong flowering. ● Prune any late-summer flowering shrubs such as the rock rose (Helianthemum). ● Prune climbing roses and rambling roses once they’ve finished flowering (unless they are repeat-flowering, in which case leave them). ● Keep your Camellias and Rhododendrons well watered at this time of year to ensure that next year’s buds develop well.

● Create a new lawn from turf or seed - autumn weather is favourable for good lawn establishment. ● Raise the height of your mower blades as grass growth slows down. ● Aerate your lawn with a garden fork, removing thatch from the surface with a rake and repairing dead patches. Use a specialist lawn scariﬁer if you have a large area to cover. ● You can feed your lawn with an autumn fertiliser now, which is rich in potassium and low in nitrogen.

● Keep harvesting crops. If you have a glut of fruit and veg try freezing, drying, pickling, and storing so that you can beneﬁt from them later on. ● It’s important to pinch out your cordon tomato plants now if you haven’t already done so. This will concentrate the plant’s energy into producing ripe fruits. ● To test if sweetcorn is ready, pinch a kernel - it will release a milky sap when ripe. If the kernels are starchy you’ve left it too late, if they’re watery they need a little longer to ripen! ● Spread newly dug potatoes out to dry for a few hours

1939

1970 1666: The Great Fire of London

In the early hours of the morning of September 2nd, a ﬁre broke out in King Charles II’s bakery in Pudding Lane in London. The ﬁre, which raged for four days and nights, destroyed most of the capital. More than 13,000 houses, 87 churches and most of the main buildings of London were destroyed, leaving nearly 200,000 people destitute.

1928: The first antibiotic

On September 28, Scottish scientist Sir Alexander Fleming noticed as he was about to ﬂush away some mould growing on one of his specimens of bacteria that where the mould had grown the staphylococci bacteria had disappeared. Within a month, he had replicated the results several times and was convinced that penicillin mould could kill all the commonly deadly bacteria.

1908: The Ford revolution

On September 27th, the first Ford Model T motor car rolled off the assembly line. It wasn’t the first car to be built, nor the first assembly line, but it was a moment that would change the world – the first time an assembly line technique was used to produce cars that nearly everyone could afford.

1666 Henry Ford’s vision was to build a car for the “great multitude”. Originally assembled by hand, by 1914 the Ford T could be produced on an assembly line in 93 minutes (reducing the production time by nearly 11 hours). The Model T cemented Ford’s success – by the time he had made his 10 millionth car, 9 out of 10 of all cars in the entire world were Fords.

1970: Death of Jimi Hendrix

On September 18, the American musician Jimi Hendrix died in London. One of the most inﬂuential guitarists of the 1960s, he was described by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as “arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music.” The post-mortem examination concluded that Hendrix aspirated his own vomit and died of asphyxia while intoxicated with barbiturates.

1939: The beginning of World War Two

Germany invaded Poland on September 1st, fairly conﬁdent that Britain and France would continue their policy of appeasement. But the British and French prime ministers, Neville Chamberlain and Edouard Daladier, issued Adolf Hitler with ultimatums demanding the withdrawal of his troops, which when ignored led to their joint declaration

of war on September 3rd. Crowds of spectators watched as Big Ben struck 11 o’clock, sounding the end of Germany’s deadline to withdraw from Poland, and the beginning of World War II. On the September 2nd 1945, Japan signed the act of unconditional surrender, ﬁnally bringing to an end the world’s deadliest war. Over 70 million people, mostly civilians, are thought to have died.

2001: 9/11

On September 11, al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four airliners and led a coordinated attack on the United States. Two of the planes were flown deliberately into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre in New York, which led to their collapse and the destruction of several buildings nearby. A third plane was flown into the Pentagon in Virginia and a fourth plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew struggled with the hijackers and tried to take control of the plane. The target for this plane was the United States Capitol in Washington. Nearly 3,000 people died on that day – 246 on the four planes, 2,603 in the Twin Towers and surrounding area and 125 at the Pentagon. Most were civilians, and included people from more than 90 countries.
