Welcome....

Welcome to our September issue. Hopefully this month will see all children back to school and restarting their education as life takes another big step back to normality. This year has certainly been a strange year, with lots of local events being cancelled, one I will certainly miss going to is the Mold food festival, always something to look forward to in September.

So what do we have in this month’s issue? It’s difficult to go abroad in these uncertain times but hopefully next year you could visit the beautiful greek island of KOS, see pages 6-7 to see what you can expect to find on your visit. A bit closer to home we discover the beautiful county of Cheshire, see pages 16-17. Are you a follower of fashion? take a look at our Autumn and Winter fashion tips on pages

10-11. Have you ever wondered why your dog barks so much? See pages 20-21 to see how you can stop them barking. Lots more going on including a chance to win a pair of tickets to Slade, £25 cash and another great book. Please keep supporting our advertiser’s within through these difficult times. If you do use one of the businesses please tell them you saw them in our Flintshire magazines. £25 Cash Winner - Ian Londan- Four Seasons Book Winner - Deb Sainsbury- 8 Year’s Reg, Editor Inside Flintshire Magazines Scan the QR code on the front cover & never miss a copy of Inside Flintshire Magazine.

Glamour returns

Need a break from normcore? The Autumn/Winter catwalks shelved minimalism in favour of all things extravagant - think mega fur coats and rich clashing textures, outré coloured knits and thigh-high boots. You heard it - glamour is back!

Cool, basically

This season’s girl keeps a

laid-back simplicity by day with oversized bikers, denim on denim and street-sport layers over ‘90s underwear. It’s all in the easy touches - a knot in your white tee or a plaid shirt tied round the waist.

Own the night

Autumn/Winter amps up the sex-appeal for evening with sharp tuxedo suiting, bodycon co-ords and mini eyelet dresses. Top-to-toe black and lace-up heels aren’t to be messed with.

How to Stop Your DOG Barking

20

Please mention Inside Flintshire Magazine when responding to advertisements

IS YOUR DOG’S BARK DRIVING YOU MAD? D

og owners tend to view barking as an extremely irritating behavioural trait in their pets, despite the fact it can also be useful. It is the way in which dogs communicate with each other, their offspring and their owners, and it can be used to signify a variety of feelings and emotions including excitement, pain and anxiety. Barking also acts as a warning in various situations and can even demonstrate aggression. Every owner expects their dog to bark at some point or another, but when it becomes a persistent problem the reasons for the behaviour need to be explored.

TYPE OF BREED Some breeds are simply more prone to barking than others. If this is something you are concerned about, thoroughly research which ones have a reputation for the behaviour before getting a dog. However, every individual animal is different and there is no guarantee that choosing a breed statistically less likely to bark means your dog won’t do the opposite.

DO THEY HAVE EVERYTHING THEY NEED? A dog that won’t stop barking may be trying to tell you they need something such as food or water, or they could be too hot or cold. It might be due to a lack of exercise, as barking can be a way of releasing high levels of excess energy. If they are doing it continuously,

check you have provided them with all of their essentials. Fill your dog’s food bowl as appropriate, and make sure they always have access to fresh water should they need it. If it is a particularly warm day why not shut your curtains or blinds to create a shady area for them to lie in? Your house needs to be heated sufficiently during cold weather, and the dog’s bed should be kept away from any windows and doors where a lot of heat can escape.

ANXIETY AND BEHAVIOURAL ISSUES If your dog appears to have everything they need, you have to consider what else might be the cause of the barking. It could be due to anxiety, as many dogs can bark if left alone for long periods of time, which can develop into compulsive behaviour. Similarly, the dog may be expressing boredom. Taking them out for a walk before you are due to leave will make them less likely to do it. Where you keep your dog can also make a large difference to their behaviour. For instance, leaving them isolated and cooped up in one room all day whilst you are out of the house can induce anxiety.

Getting your dog too excited through playing or riling them up can also encourage excessive barking. Don’t exacerbate the problem by getting them unnecessarily excited, as they will then become confused as to why the behaviour isn’t acceptable. Speaking to your dog in a calming manner and training them to understand when it is and isn’t ok for them to bark will encourage them to behave appropriately.

NOISES Noises such as the doorbell or vacuum cleaner can also trigger a spell of barking. Don’t shout because your dog may think you are trying to join in with their behaviour, and it could also cause an anxious or frightened animal to behave aggressively. Remain calm but firm when speaking to your dog, and train them to respond to a certain word that instructs them to stop barking, such as ‘quiet’.

EXCITEMENT

SEEK HELP

Your dog may bark to illustrate their excitement, for example, if they know they are going for a walk or before they are about to be fed.

A medical problem or old age might also be the reason for a dog’s persistent barking, so ensure you take them to the vet for a check-up.

The Umbrella Academy 2 seasons Starring: Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda Creator: Steve Blackman Ellen Page and Mary J Blige star in this fantasy series set in an alternate universe. Ellen plays Vanya, one of seven children adopted by a billionaire. Unlike her brothers and sisters - all of whom were born on the same day to mothers who didn’t know they were pregnant - Vanya doesn’t have superpowers. She can only watch on as her estranged siblings get back together to try to solve the mystery of their foster father’s death... and they also plan to save the world while they’re at it.

Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes 1 season Creator: Joe Berlinger This unique and gripping documentary series focuses on the man whose personality, good looks and social graces defied the serial-killer stereotype, allowing him to commit the brutal sex-crime slayings of more than 30 women before being caught in 1978. The series utilizes over 100 hours of exclusive audio interviews that the two journalists conducted with Bundy on death row in 1980, giving the unique perspective of hearing the killer analyze his own life and motives.

The Witcher

1 season Starring: Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra, Freya Allan Creator: Lauren Schmidt Hissrich Ever since Game of Thrones has ended, people have been looking for the new Game of Thrones - and although almost any fantasy series that’s been made in the past few years has given itself this label, The Witcher has probably had one of the biggest impacts on the fantasy world. Starring former Superman Henry Cavill as the titular monster-hunter Geralt of Rivia, a gruff and taciturn swordsman hated and feared by the people he protects from supernatural beasties, it has been received well - and is certainly worth your time if you’re a lover of the fantasy genre.

More genius ways to arrange your kitchen appliances ast month we put together some clever ideas to make your kitchen easier to use and help maximise your space and making your kitchen apace safer. Do we have any more tips? You bet we do! Here are five more ways in which you can make your kitchen more user friendly.

1. Create a bank of ovens

Having ALL your appliances in one bank relies on you having a space large enough. If you don’t, cluster them by type – putting ‘hot’ appliances, such as your oven, hob and microwave, together. If you do this, stick with one brand of appliance. Manufactures like Whirlpool, Miele and Baumatic invest heavily in making sure that the control panels, control knobs, badges, handles, displays and doors all align, so that they look symmetrical and elegant in any configuration.

2. Have a wet zone

‘Ideally, position your washing machine and dishwasher/ tumble dryer either side of your sink,’ says Chris Mossop, kitchen designer at Harvey Jones. ‘Having your plumbing in one place will make life easier both when you’re having your kitchen fitted and if any issues develop down the line.’

34

3 Make the cooker a focal point

‘Make the cooker the central focus of the room, if possible,’ advises Harvey Jones’ Matthew Payne. ‘The primary function of the kitchen is to cook; the other appliances are all there to support this.’

4. Move your washing machine elsewhere

If space is tight in the kitchen, take a tip from the Europeans and site your washing machine in the bathroom. There are tough rules on this, however, , however, so we asked Steve Corbett, marketing manager at CDA, for advice. ‘To comply with British Standard regulations, the washing machine has to be at least 3m away from the bath or shower,’ he says. ‘You’ll also need an electrician to check that its plug socket is properly RCD protected.’ In other words - you’ll need a BIG bathroom!

5. Your fridge and ovens can be closer than you think

Traditionally, designers advised against putting the fridge next to the oven as it would have to work extra hard to hold its temperature, wasting energy. But things are changing, which is good news if you have a very awkward space.

THE BATTLE OF TSUSHIMA AUTHOR: PHIL CARRADICE In 1905 Japan and Russia were at war. With the Russian Far East Fleet destroyed, the Czar decided to send his Baltic Fleet half way around the world to exact revenge. This mammoth journey took many months and was, in itself, an amazing feat of seamanship. But, at the end of this epic adventure, the Russians were totally overwhelmed and the vast majority of the [eet went to the bottom. There was no alternative for the Czar but to sue for an ignominious peace. The story of the journey and the ďŹ nal battle remain fascinating, the people involved acting and deporting themselves like characters from a novel. Russian Admiral Rozhestvensky was a gunnery expert but someone who had never held active command in a major sea battle. Japanese Admiral Togo had trained in Britain, enlisting as a cadet on the Training Ship Worcester, even though he was far too old and was forced to lie about his age. Inept generalship on the part of the Russians, 36

Japanese Admiral Togo, saw the complete destruction of the Russian eet. The naval battle of Tsushima is one of the forgotten actions of the twentieth century, but it has a signifcance that is immense in world history. About the Author Phil Carradice is a wellknown writer and historian with over 60 books to his credit. A poet, story teller and broadcaster, his most recent books are “The Cuban Missile Crisisâ€? (for Pen and Sword), “The Call Upâ€? (Fonthill) and the novel “Stargazersâ€? for Accent Press. He is a regular broadcaster on BBC Radio and TV, presents the BBC Wales History programme “The Past Masterâ€? and is widely regarded as one of the ďŹ nest creative writing tutors in Wales.

I used your advert to enquire to Flintshire appliances to see if they by any chance they repaired Lamona cookers . It was just before 5 pm on the Saturday evening I spoke to a really nice gentleman called Gareth he said he had a delivery to do in Mold on Monday about 4 pm so would it be alright if he called to me at 5 pm. I told him that would be fine and I explained what I thought was wrong with my cooker & he gave me a rough estimate. On Monday he arrived just before 4 pm which was good he was so professional and so nice it was so interesting to see how quickly he pulled out my double oven from the housing and lifted it down onto the floor he needed to get to the back of my oven to put in a new element. It didn’t take him long at all he then tested my oven when it was all put back to make sure everything was working properly. All done in under an hour such excellent service and 40% less than the estimate he had given me. I would recommend Flintshire appliances to anyone it is a family run business. I feel confident if I ever need a really good electrician I know who to call. When the time comes that I may need to replace any of my electrical goods Flintshire appliances is the first place I will call. I have since looked on the website and everything seems to be good value. Thank you to inside Flintshire Magazine for having that advert for them without the magazine I would never of known about them or found them. Many many thanks. J Outwin.

Gandhi begins hunger

On September 16, in his cell at Yerwada Jail near Bombay, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi began a hunger strike in protest at the British government’s decision to separate India’s electoral system by caste. As India slowly moved towards independence, Gandhi’s influence only grew. On January 12, 1948, Gandhi undertook his last successful fast, to persuade New Delhi’s Hindus and Muslims to work toward peace. Less than two weeks after breaking it he was assassinated by a Hindu extremist on his way to an evening prayer meeting.

Your stars for September Aries (March 21 - April 19)

An analysis of your monthly indicators for September reveal that you will be mentally alert and switched on to life in general. You will find life invigorating and challenges in work will excite you and make you want to stand out from the crowd. Your voice will be heard by senior people and your talents will be noted.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20)

There could be a serious flirtation going on at work this month. Certainly, your heart will be fluttering and there will be butterflies in your stomach. You may toy with the idea of starting an affair. The magnetism of one person will be very strong and equally hard to resist.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)

This is a month for relaxing and taking life easy. A last-minute getaway would do you the world of good. You may suddenly feel tired or on the point of exhaustion, so there has never been a better time to take time out. Money will flow easily this month and you will have plenty to spend on the things you enjoy.

Cancer (June 21 - July 22)

This is a good time to take stock of your finances. You may have overspent in the last couple of weeks, which means you have little rainy day money. If you take the time to plan your spending more carefully, you could be surprised by how much you can save by simply sticking to a plan.

Leo (July 23 - August 22)

You will be very busy with stuff, sorting through your own things as well as those of other people. You might have dealings with certain humanitarian causes where your past efforts will be recognised and rewarded. You could also be offered a leadership role, an award, a promotion or a pay rise.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22)

You could encounter some rather unexpected changes to your career path. Out of the blue you might be offered a new position. It will not be one you have applied for so it might come as a bit of a shock. If your love-life has been lacking lustre then this is the month when there will be fireworks again!

Libra (September 23 - October 22)

There could be a few niggles ahead as you try to keep a healthy work/life balance. You risk struggling to keep yourself from flying off the handle with work colleagues who lack your conviction. This horoscope month could prove physically, mentally and psychologically draining, so try to keep a clear and cool head.

Scorpio (October 23 - November 21)

You will feel more like yourself this month because your stress levels will have reduced. You could be inclined to embark on a strict diet where you are promised results very quickly. Don’t be too easily fooled. With a sensible regime and regular exercise, you can easily achieve your desired results.

Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21)

You will seem more energetic this month and ready to explore new horizons. Travel is forecast, on both the work andhome front. You might become interested in a job relocation opportunity which suddenly arises. It is an excellent month to look at your diet and cut down on the junk food and fizzy drinks.

Capricorn (December 22 - January 19)

This is another very positive month for Rams. You may want to start a new business to show off your expertise. There will be many persuasive people who feel they can gain from following your lead. You have built quite a reputation around you and others will seek you out for advice.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 18)

Wow! What a lucky 30-day period for Aquarians! Now is the time to preen yourself and take centre stage. Get your hair done, buy yourself some new clothes and dedicate this month to making yourself look fabulous. Time will fly by like a whirlwind and you may feel that you don’t quite know what’s hit you.

Pisces (February 19 - March 20)

You will be celebrating your finances, since all your investments are doing well and you have nothing to worry about. Your income remains steady and you will be able to see how your past financial planning has paid dividends. You may feel an increase in your psychic awareness and innate psychic abilities.

Garden lighting ideas to swoon over Celebrate the most glamorous evenings in the garden with beautiful lighting ideas that will extend your stay far into the night. Garden lighting can help create a magical space that can be enjoyed even when the sun’s gone down. Make the most of long summer evenings and transform your garden into a glowing living space you can use after dark, with our stunning garden lighting ideas to illuminate alfresco diners.

Cast an inviting glow When dining outdoors in the garden, the natural glow of candlelight as an ambient garden lighting option cannot be surpassed. These heavy ribbed glass holders are the perfect balance of smart and safe. Avoid the temptation to keep mosquitoes at bay by using citronella candles - the scent can put diners off.

Hang fairy lights for a magical touch Add some sparkle to your home, inside and out, with a set of unique fairy light designs. Fairy lights bring a magical quality to any garden, and these flower versions work beautifully with the lace tablecloth and pressed-glass tealight holders. A little light goes a long way at night. Use selectively and remember that darkness can be used to conceal areas.

Add playful colours to dark corners The humble paper lantern takes position as party-perfect centrepiece when clustered in an array of colours. In a mix of sizes and hung at various heights, they transform this covered garden nook from plain to playful and balance out the darker, heavy garden furniture and the intensity of a fireplace. Truly a light and bright way to have fun with garden lighting.

Banoffee cheesecake

Cheesecake meets banoffee pie in this creamy soft-set caramel dessert, guaranteed to impress at a dinner party or occasion

Ingredients For the base - 200g digestive biscuits, crushed - 100g butter, melted, plus extra for frying - 4 bananas, peeled and sliced

For the cheesecake

- 150ml double cream - 3 x 280g tubs full-fat cream cheese (not low-fat this will stop the mixture from setting properly) - 85g icing sugar, sifted - 1 tbsp maple syrup - 300g dulce de leche or caramel sauce (we used Carnation Cook with Caramel)

For the topping

- 150ml double cream (keep chilled, it whips faster) - 25g dulce de leche or caramel - 1 banana, cut into 8-10 slices

Step by step 1 For the base, mix the digestives with the melted butter in a bowl. Spoon the mixture into a 23cm springform cake tin and press firmly over the base with the back of a spoon. Chill in the fridge. 2 Heat a frying pan until hot and add a knob of

butter and the bananas, frying for 2-3 mins until golden brown. Remove from the pan using a slotted spoon and set aside to cool.

using an electric whisk until softly whipped. Put the cream cheese and icing sugar in another large bowl and whisk until smooth. Don’t over whisk the mixture as it will loosen and stop the cheesecake achieving a soft-set. Add the whipped cream to the cream cheese, as well as the maple syrup and the dulce de leche. 4 Spoon the sweet cream cheese filling into the

cake tin, covering the bananas, and use the back of a spoon or palette knife to spread evenly. Place in the fridge for at least 4 hrs (preferably overnight) to set.

5 For the topping, whip the cream, put into a piping

bag with a medium star-shaped nozzle and set aside. Melt the dulce de leche over a low heat in a small saucepan with a splash of water until it can be drizzled (dulce de leche varies, so you may need to add more water). Place in a second piping bag (or plastic bag) and snip the very end off it, to leave a tiny hole.

6 Starting from the edge of the cake, swirl the

dulce de leche sauce in a circular motion around the cake. Pipe 10-12 medium-sized swirls of whipped cream around the edge and rest a fresh banana slice on each. Serve immediately.

3 Arrange the cooled bananas on top of the biscuit

base. For the cheesecake, whisk the double cream

Recipe tip

Prep: 25 min 62

Cook: 5 mins

Serves: 8-10

To achieve the soft-set texture of this cheesecake, be sure to use full-fat cream cheese, as low-fat can make the mixture too runny. Also take care not to over whip the mixture as this can make it too soft.
