Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mcelhenney Granted Freedom Of The Borough Of Wrexham...

Wrexham Football Club and its owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have been granted the ‘freedom of the county borough.’The proposal was tabled at Wrexham Council’s Executive Board on Tuesday, November 8 in recognition of the club’s long and proud history, and the amazing impact the two owners have had in helping to promote Wrexham across the world.

Councillor Mark Pritchard, Leader of Wrexham Council, says: “Football is the beating heart of our community and there’s always been incredible passion and support for the club.

“We have an amazing story here in Wrexham, along with a unique character and identity that is winning fans all over the world.

“These two Hollywood actors have had an incredible impact on both the football club and the community and have helped catapult Wrexham onto the world stage.

WREXHAM ASPIRES TO BECOME ‘CAPITAL OF PLAY’

Let’s take a minute to think back to where we played as children. Was it dressing up…looking for treasure…rolling down hills… jumpers for goal posts?

Most adults recall their childhoods as having plenty of time to play with their friends in and around their neighbourhoods. We tend to remember everyday adventures-opportunities we found and made ourselves and with our siblings, cousins, friends.

BUSINESS AS USUAL AT WREXHAM’S HISTORIC MARKETS AHEAD OF MOVE FOR REFURBISHMENT

Back in October we announced that a temporary home for traders from the Butchers and General market had been found as we look to refurbish the market sites that are now very much in need of a refurbishment and modernisation.

The market traders are now likely to move into their temporary home on Queens Square later this summer.

Until then its business as usual as traders look to offer a personalised shopping experience.

Lead Member for Economy & Regeneration, Councillor Nigel Williams said: “We would all like to see a thriving Wrexham High Street and shopping experience, and the best way to make that happen is to support local Wrexham businesses like the ones that exist at our markets.”

Playing has always been and continues to be central to children’s physical, mental, social and emotional health and wellbeing. For children themselves, playing is one of the most important aspects of their lives. They value time, freedom and good places to play. When asked what is important to them, children in Wrexham consistently mention playing and meeting up with their friends.

Wrexham already has a clear vision for improving conditions for children’s play. This encompasses:

• Improving access and the quality of spaces for play

• Parent and professional understanding of play

• The role decision makers have.

In late 2021, Wrexham Council set itself the challenge to become the ‘capital of play’. This was part of Wrexham’s bid to be named the UK’s City of Culture 2025.

Play Wales is the national charity for children’s play in Wales. All children are entitled to be able to play within their communities and we work to achieve this goal on their behalf, identifying solutions to enable more children to play more everyday. Play Wales is pleased to be working with Wrexham Council to explore ways it can meet its aspiration to become a ‘capital of play.’

FILM SCREENING TO ENCOURAGE BETTER CONVERSATIONS AROUND DEMENTIA

People are being invited to attend a film screening at the Wellbeing Hub in May, which will help to encourage better communication and conversations around dementia.

The screening takes place 10am-12pm on Monday, May 15, at the Wellbeing Hub at Crown Buildings on Chester Street, and attendees will get to watch the thought-provoking film ‘The World Turned Upside Down’ along with Wrexham Council’s PCP Dementia Co-ordinator Kate Evans.

You will be invited to reflect on why and how conversations can go badly or work well, as well as what helps to maintain good conversations. Kate will pause the film at select points to discuss thoughts and opinions for various scenarios carried out by the actors. Refreshments are also being provided, with tea and coffee available on arrival.

Can you believe it? Tŷ Pawb is five years old!

And what a five years it’s been! Since that wet, wonderful Bank Holiday Monday back in 2018, when 10,000 people came out to see us to open our doors for the first time, Tŷ Pawb has grown to become a thriving, multi-award winning markets, arts and community facility, an Art Fund Museum of the Year finalist, and a nationally recognised, pioneering example of how to reimagine a public building.

These achievements would not have been possible without the extraordinary efforts of the community of traders, artists, staff, volunteers and all the other countless groups and individuals who form part of our Tŷ Pawb family.

So, to celebrate this milestone, we’ve been delving through our short (but sizable) archives to pick out some of the best moments from our first five years. Moments that sum up what Tŷ Pawb is all about. Summing up our story in a short space has been quite the task! A lot has happened since 2018….

The Golden Lion is situated in the picturesque village of Rossett.The Golden Lion is a Gastropub with a homely yet traditional pub which is steeped in history, the pub is well known for its ghost stories and even has its very own phantom visitor.

Old Jeffrey,who is thought to haunt the pub now lives peacefully in bedroom number two upstairs and although he is still inclined to a little mischief, he is perfectly harmful.

The interior of the pub is an eclectic mix of old and new and includes real cosy lit fires and stylish plush armchairs to relax in before or after your meal or just for a casual drink, the outside does not disappoint either, featuring a lovely picturesque beer garden with ample seating and also its very own Tipi tent, in which you can enjoy a cosy drink in unique surroundings .

We visited on a Monday afternoon and we were glad we had pre booked a table as it was extremely busy, but retained a warm welcoming atmosphere. We were seated in a nice area overlooking the beer garden and

Tipi tent. The menu featured an array of dishes including homemade burgers, classic mains and succulent grills. They also do a fixed price lunch menu in which you could enjoy two courses for £13.95 or three courses for £15.95.

We decided to dine of the main menu and went for Hydes Battered Haddock,Hydes Classic burger and Slow Cooked Beef and Hydes Ale pie.

The Hydes Battered Haddock was huge and was accompanied by thick cut home cooked chips, mushy peas and tartar sauce, I had also added a portion of chip shop curry sauce, wow I certainly was not disappointed it was a mega portion and was extremely tasty,, I loved having a portion of curry sauce as well as the traditional mushy peas to dunk my chips in.

My dining partners were also extremely pleased with their choices the slow cooked Beef and Hydes ale pie was served in a traditional pie dish and I could see the filling was bubbling up over the crusty golden pastry top ,I was assured it melted in your mouth and was extremely flavoursome, this was served with cabbage and bacon creamy mash and Tendrestem broccoli, I asked if they would have preferred chunky chips with the pie but was promptly told no, the mash was amazing ,as if it could not get any better it was served with a jug of rich beef gravy to smother over the warming comfort food.

We also ordered the Hydes classic burger from the Grill,served with classic French fries,it consisted of two 4oz beef burgers served on a brioche bun with sliced

tomatoes, baby gem lettuce, gherkin and creamy burger sauce, it was also topped with two slices of crispy bacon and Emmmental cheese. The burgers were high quality and juicy, loaded with tasty toppings, you don’t get much better in a cheese burger!

When they served the Sharing platter we immediately commented that we maybe should not have also indulged in the Cheesecake as our eyes were bigger than our bellies, but looked utterly delicious all the same!

It was presented on a slate platter and consisted of Apple, Rhubarb and Vanilla crumble, Chocolate brownie, Mango and Passion fruit Eton mess, sticky toffee pudding and caramel filled Churros served with a pan of thick custard and some Vanilla ice cream.

THE BILL

As we skipped starters we decided we could not resist something naughty but nice from the dessert menu , we decided to try the Chefs sharing selection for two and also couldn’t resist the Biscoff Cheesecake.

Every single pudding was to die for and we couldn’t choose our favourite, we would highly recommend trying one of these as you taste so many desserts and at such a reasonable price of £15.95, the only problem was I couldn’t possibly try the Biscoff Cheesecake as I was bursting at the seams ,however I was told that this too was also amazing, and I guess I will have to try this next time!

Foster the hero as Wrexham return to the top of the National League

Elliot Lee’s strike twelve minutes from time roared Wrexham back to the top of the National League, in a dramatic five goal thriller at the Racecourse Ground.

Cedwyn Scott had a golden opportunity to claim a point at the death from the penalty spot, but Ben Foster was the hero, saving to his right to earn victory in the 97th minute.

John Bostock put Notts County ahead in fine fashion on the stroke of half time, sweeping a free-kick into the top corner.

However, Paul Mullin responded three minutes after half-time, converting from James Jones’ cross and slotting past Sam Slocombe.

Mullin this time the provider, crossed for Jacob Mendy who caressed the ball home to take the lead, but that only lasted 6 minutes, as Kyle Cameron headed in to equalise.

Phil Parkinson responded to the defeat at Halifax by making several changes, with Ollie Palmer and Tom O’Connor back in the starting eleven, and Luke Young returning to the bench.

For Luke Williams’ side, they were boosted by the returning Ruben Rodrigues, who missed their home fixture against Wealdstone on Friday as a precaution.

The opening stages were played out with both teams trying to impose their styles on one another, with neither able to break through. Notts looked comfortable in possession, but they struggled to penetrate the Wrexham defence from open play.

Their first opportunity was an ambitious one, with Connell Rawlinson striking from distance, but it was a comfortable one for Ben Foster to deal with.

Wrexham too were short of chances in the opening exchanges, and the closest they came was through Paul Mullin, who hit a free-kick over the crossbar.

However, it needed a real moment of quality to break the deadlock, and Bostock provided exactly that on the stroke of half time, curling his freekick into the top corner.

Three minutes after the restart and Mullin fired Wrexham onto level terms as he met James Jones’ inch perfect cross, and slotted past Slocombe.

On the hour mark Eoghan O’Connell came agonisingly close to putting the Red Dragons ahead, with a ferocious impromptu volley which rattled the crossbar.

The Wrexham pressure continued to mount, and Mullin fizzed a surging ball into the path of Mendy who smashed past Slocombe to take the lead.

However, County weren’t done there, and substitute Sam Austin danced his way past the defence and forced Foster into making an outstanding save.

The follow-up, a set piece that caught the Wrexham defence napping, and skipper Cameron headed home unmarked past Foster to level the game.

What started as a tentative chess match turned into a blockbuster heavyweight contest, and it was Lee who put Wrexham back in front, with a simple finish into the bottom corner.

There was to be more drama, as referee Scott Tallis awarded a penalty in the 96th minute, but Foster was the hero, diving down to his right denying Scott and County what would have been a crucial point.

TAKING ON THE 3 PEAKS CHALLENGE FOR DYNAMIC

Dynamic, based at Bradbury House, Salisbury Road, Wrexham, who provide out of school activities for children and young people with disabilities, are thrilled to announce that some of our supporters will be taking on the 3 Peaks Challenge.

weekend. The challenge will begin in Scotland at Ben Nevis, which is the tallest of the three mountains, standing at 4,409ft. The team will then travel South to the Lake District where they will tackle Scafell Pike, 3209ft. They will then head to Wales to climb Yr Wyddfa, which recently changed its name from Snowdon, which stands at 3,560ft.

Mark Connolly of Huws Gray in Wrexham has been a long-term supporter of Dynamic for many years and Mark has shown his support in many ways, including his last fundraiser which involved dying his beard bright pink. Last year he approached some colleagues about taking on a big challenge and between them they decided to tackle the 3 Peaks challenge. The climbers will be Lee Jones, Shane Rhys Jones and Dale Evans with Mark navigating and providing support.

The challenge itself will involve climbing the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales within 24 hours and will take place over the May Bank Holiday

Mark Connolly said ‘I have friends whose children have accessed Dynamic services over the years, so I know first had what a brilliant service they offer. The children enjoy attending the sessions and it also gives a little bit of respite to the families.

When I first mentioned a challenge for Dynamic my colleagues were quick to suggest the 3 Peaks. They all knew of Dynamic and the fantastic support they provide and wanted to do their bit to help. We know the challenge itself will be tough but there is lots of training already underway and we are confident we can complete it within the 24 hours timeframe. We would like

to thank everyone for their donations so far, their well-wishes and donations are really helping to spur us on. All donations, large or small will make a huge difference to this fantastic charity’ Marie Gibson, Liaison Officer at Dynamic said ‘We are incredibly grateful to Mark, Lee, Shane and Dale for taking on this incredible challenge. We know how much time and effort is going into the training, planning and organisation of the actual event and are very grateful.
